Tour summary.

Edinburgh is a compact city and easy to explore on foot. We provide directions for 3 walking routes that show you different sides of the Capital city; a walk down the historical Royal Mile , a leafy riverside path to the  Botanic Gardens  for an escape from the city buzz and a more energetic hike to Arthur’s Seat with the option to continue to an old Inn with lots of history.

Edinburgh boasts a great range of atmospheric old pubs and we steer you to a selection of our favourites.

The guide also includes options for day trips around the surrounding area by car, bus or train.

The day trips by car are short routes that allow you to explore;

  • East Lothian where you can visit some spectacular castle ruins on a cliff top, a whisky distillery, pretty villages and embark on boat trips to Bass Rock.
  • West Lothian where you can visit Linlithgow Palace , Blackness Castle,   Hopetoun House  and some of the other sites used in the filming of “Outlander” .

Stopover in Edinburgh.

Two route options are provided for this drive:

The longer route takes you west, via Stirling , and then into the Trossachs National Park. Fans of “Outlander” can stop to explore Doune Castle (“Castle Leoch” in the TV show), and further along the route we guide you to stone circles where you can try to travel through time. After a photo stop at the Falls of Dochart , you travel along the shores of Loch Tay towards Aberfeldy and Pitlochry , where you may wish to end the day with a distillery tour.

Driving Distance: ~111 miles

The shorter route allows time to spend a full afternoon in Pitlochry. Heading north from Edinburgh, you cross the Forth estuary with views of the famous Forth Rail Bridge . You then speed north to Perth , but can extend the drive with a visit to the pretty village of Falkland where Mary Queen of Scots had her favourite palace. Falkland village might look familiar as it has appeared in the filming of some early episodes of " Outlander ". From Perth to Pitlochry, we suggest a back road route that visits Scone Palace , the ancient crowning place of Scottish Kings, and the romantic ruins of Dunkeld Cathedral beside the River Tay.

Driving Distance: ~81 miles

Short tours around Pitlochry -  If you arrive early in Pitlochry, or wish to stay for several nights, you will enjoy the 2 short tour options supplied in this guide. These tours cover the grand Blair castle as well as many lesser known places such as a deserted Blackhouse village, a 2000 year old tree and a stone circle that is easily missed.

Stopover in Pitlochry Area.

Whilst other tourists are shuffling along  the busy main road to Inverness, we guide you on a more scenic journey through the Cairngorms National Park   where you can explore the Rothiemurchus forest. Pack a picnic as this is a day where we’ll show you lots of idyllic places to chill out beside a loch or river.

Whilst in the Cairngorms, you might wish to allow time for visits to the popular Highland Folk Museum and  Strathspey Steam Railway.

Heading north from Grantown on Spey, you cross over moorlands as you head towards the fertile farmland of the North East. The main tourist attractions on this section of the journey are  Cawdor Castle , Clava Cairns and Culloden battlefield . But there’s a lot more to be discovered in our guides.

Driving Distance: ~115 miles

Stopover in Inverness Area.

Inverness is a great touring base for exploring the Highlands and we supply you with directions for a range of day trips:

  • Black Isle - A short tour of the Black Isle where you can visit a carefully preserved 18th century village and embark on boat trips to see wild dolphins .
  • Moray Coast - A historical tour of Moray with its historical attractions and scenic coastline. This day trip features the highlights of Culloden , Benromach Distillery , Brodie Castle , Elgin Cathedral and Fort George.
  • Glen Affric - A scenic drive into Glen Affric where you can see the last remains of the Ancient Caledonian Forest . This route includes options to explore a Neolithic burial chamber , a hidden Clan graveyard and a 150 foot high waterfall in a lovely woodland setting.
  • Dunrobin Castle - A day trip up the coast to the spectacular Dunrobin Castle, which has all the opulence of a French chateau. From Dunrobin, you can follow a longer route that includes a visit to cascade where you might see salmon leaping upstream if you visit in late Summer / Autumn.

Stopover in Inverness area

From Inverness, we provide a choice of routes along Loch Ness so you can either; follow the mainstream tourist trail past all the “Nessie” attractions and Urquhart Castle , or drive a quieter road on the south shore of Loch Ness.

You then have a second set of route options so you can extend the day to include a visit to Glenfinnan , or take a more direct route to allow more time around the Fort William / Glen Coe area. After a photo stop at Glen Coe , you pick up a great coastal road that carries you south through the lovely scenery of Argyll to your stopover in the Oban area.

Oban is a lively seaside town with a great range of Seafood restaurants . We give you a list of our favourite places to eat so you can book a table for a meal to remember.

Driving Distance: ~110 miles to 141 miles depending on routes options followed.

Stopover in Oban Area.

Oban is a great touring base and the guide provides you with a choice of day trips for exploring the wider area.

  • Jacobite Steam Train – With an early start, you can get to Fort William in time to catch the morning steam train service to Mallaig. A must for “ Harry Potter ” fans, but a popular attraction so you need to book early (April – October).
  • Day Trip To Mull, Iona & Staffa – You can either take a day off driving and join an organised boat / coach trip to Iona & Staffa, OR you can follow our directions for exploring the island by car. If taking the car across, we recommend that you stay on Mull for 2 or more nights and we provide information to help you adapt the tour plan for a stopover on Mull.
  • Day Trip to Inveraray via Kilmartin Glen – This route guides you along a road that we rate as one of the best scenic drives i n Scotland. History fans will enjoy the ancient standing stones and burial chambers of Kilmartin Glen. The return leg travels north to the pretty 18th century village of Inveraray with its ornate castle that is still home to the Duke of Argyll.
  • Lorn Islands – Within a short distance of Oban you can visit a choice of small islands with unique characters. Our itinerary gives you details of each island’s highlights and the best ways that you can explore them.

For the first journey leg, from Oban to Crianlarich, we provide 2 route options:

  • The direct route option heads inland via the shores of Loch Awe , Scotland’s longest loch. Along the way, we guide you to the footpath that leads to the photogenic ruins of Kilchurn castle which guards the east end of the loch.
  • The longer route takes you through Glen Coe with its dramatic scenery and tragic history of the massacre of the MacDonalds. After Glen Coe, you cross the wild and timeless expanse of Rannoch Moor .

Crianlarich translates from the Gaelic for “Low Pass” and it is at this village that you choose between the road to Loch Lomond and Glasgow, or the road that heads east through the Trossachs to Stirling and Edinburgh. If going to Glasgow, can stop for a drink in a haunted 18th century inn , or join a loch cruise.

If returning to Edinburgh you could take journey breaks at Doune or Stirling castle.

Driving Distance: ~90 miles to Glasgow via direct route

Driving Distance: ~117 miles to Edinburgh via direct route

Stopover in Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Testimonials

I convinced my other half to get the Scenic Tour 4-5 Days guide (even though he very much wanted to do it all himself), and it was the best experience ever. In fact, ever since this trip, we're trying to re-create the experience. Of course, Scotland can hardly let anyone down, but this guide truly made it an adventure. We found so many hidden and not so hidden gems, and everything was perfectly laid out for us so that all we had to do was decide how much time we had and what we wanted to see next. I can't recommend it enough and wish more guides like this existed!

historical tours of scotland

Excellent! We thought the information provided was fantastic and allowed us to see things I am sure we would have missed. Mike was very helpful in sending the itinerary through again for us when we had trouble with our downloads. Would definitely recommend this site. We have been travelling for a number of years and normally would just rely on the internet and books but decided to give this a go. So glad we did.

historical tours of scotland

Secret Scotland is EXCEPTIONAL in providing guidance for itinerary planning and accommodation referrals for those wanting a self guided driving vacation in Scotland.... Simple to use.  Thorough in suggesting ‘must see’ venues. Complete - sites, restaurants, pubs and experiences.” That is how I would describe what they do and provide.  Exceptional accommodation recommendations. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

historical tours of scotland

The itinerary Secret Scotland provided was a trip saver. We loved the suggestions for sight seeing, eating, and places to stay, but the best part was the detailed driving directions. Driving on the opposite side of the road from the opposite side of the car was a little easier without having to worry about how to get there! We will definitely use this service the next time we visit Scotland!

historical tours of scotland

Secret Scotland's itineraries, accommodations guides, and other resources are incredible value with great attention to detail.  Their owners, Mike and Aury, are experienced and honest, and they helped us so much as we attempted to narrow down a very long list of things we hoped to do during our time in Scotland.  I feel so much more prepared for our trip and can now just look forward to our approaching vacation!

historical tours of scotland

We have just got back from an EXCELLENT holiday following the Borders to Orkney route suggestions. We can't say enough about how much the detailed information enhanced our experience in Scotland. We had a wonderful time seeing so many interesting sites that we would have passed by without your guide. Thank you so much.

historical tours of scotland

These guys really are the best.  We used Mike's Flexi Days East to West itinerary last July and it was truly indispensable.  His itinerary is full of detail, including driving directions and options.  Mike is also very responsive if you have any questions.  We had such a wonderful time we are going back again this year, and we will be using his itineraries again for our planning.  I would also recommend his accommodations guide.

historical tours of scotland

Just like pictures of Scotland can’t do justice to the magnificence of the actual landscape, words can’t do justice to the brilliance and sheer volume of work you put in your guide. The level of detail provided on each stopover sheet, in all the different itinerary options and on all the B&B features exceeded even my most crazy expectations.

historical tours of scotland

Mike and Aurey from Secret Scotland prepared a fantastic itinerary for us. It was a huge ingredient in the success and huge enjoyment that we got from our trip. It was absolutely worth every penny and there is no way we could have seen so much and so well without their itinerary. We felt like we belonged in Scotland, we knew what we were doing and what it all meant at every step. We recommend their services wholeheartedly. Scotland is such a marvelous place. Thank you Mike and Aurey... and we will be back!

You can visit Stirling Castle on our one day tours from Glasgow & Edinburgh, our Private Tours and on a shore excursion from Greenock (Glasgow).

History Tours

Since 2006 I have been performing comedy shows about Scottish history at Fringe festivals from Edinburgh to Dunedin. I call it educomedy. In 2017 I thought: 'How much better to take people to the places in our beautiful country where these things happened'.

So, rather than talking to a large audience in a room, I’d like to chat to your wee group as we drive around this beautiful country. These tours will not be classroom history lessons, nor stand-up shows, but I hope to keep you entertained, whilst helping you to understand Scotland.

ALL TOURS ARE BESPOKE PRIVATE TOURS but here are some examples of tours that I’ve run in the past that might give you some inspiration to decide what you would like to do on our special day.

My media commitments mean that at present I only offer two options.

Once or twice a year I offer a GROUP TOUR for up to 25 people on a planned route with hotels, outings planned and scheduled.

For those who prefer a personal experience I’d love to offer a BESPOKE PRIVATE TOUR based on your interests. I can only offer a limited number of dates each year, but please feel free to enquire. I’d love to show you around Scotland if we can make the dates work.

Bespoke Tours

Would you like to put together your own plan for a tour of the sites and sights of Scotland? Fantastic! I’ll make that happen. I have only touched on what Scotland has to offer. You don’t need to be limited to one of the fixed itineraries listed, or to the Perthshire area. I’ll pick you up in a quality vehicle where you are and deliver you to where you want to go. Just tell me what you’re looking for: distilleries, castles, battle sites, settings from Outlander, scenic views and delightful picnic areas, places associated with figures from history, or a visit to your ancestral home.

£800.00 for Bruce to be your guide (1-6 people)

Bruce has teamed up with his friends at Scotland Folk Tours to put together a fantastic eleven days with a small group of up to 25 people. He’ll take you to some of his favourite places and tell you stories along the way. You’ll enjoy a Scottish stand-up comedy show and a ceilidh and some great food and drink along the way.

Price on Application for Bruce to be your guide (1-25 people)

Real Macbeth Tour

Discover Macbeth with a short visit to Loch Leven, and a light lunch at Scone Palace, the place of Scottish kingship. Then stop at Dunkeld Cathedral in Highland Perthshire, the power base of King Duncan, nestled on the banks of the Tay. We take the road between Birnam Wood and Dunsinnane made famous by Shakespeare. There are options to climb Dunsinnane Hill to the site of Macbeth’s hillfort or visit Scotland’s oldest lending library to see the books that inspired Shakespeare to write the story, or to visit Glamis Castle to discover how Shakespeare wrongly placed it in Inverness, how Glamis is linked to the real Macbeth and how the story continues to this day. Entry fees and lunch are not included.

£800.00 for Bruce to be your guide (1-6 people) not including lunch and entry fees

Day 1 edinburgh.

Arrive at any time.

Day 2 Edinburgh

Explore Scotland’s hilly capital city on a guided tour of Edinburgh. You’ll walk along the famed Royal Mile and climb Castle Hill, following in the footsteps of soldiers, kings and queens. As you ascend the hillside, hear exciting tales of Edinburgh Castle and its use as a military fortress, royal residence and wartime prison. Upon reaching the hilltop, marvel at the magnificent Edinburgh Castle and learn more about its fascinating history and important locations via audioguide, including the Portcullis Gate, Lang Stairs, Argyle Tower, St. Margaret's Chapel, Mons Meg and David’s Tower. Enjoy the afternoon on your own, taking advantage of your free time by exploring the area or finding activities like a tour of the underground vaults or a visit to the National Museum of Scotland. In the evening, enjoy dinner on your own, choosing from an array of restaurants along The Royal Mile and in Haymarket.

Meals included:

Day 3 edinburgh/pitlochry.

Marvel at some of Edinburgh's most panoramic views as you journey by bus to the town of Pitlochry. Along the way, you’ll stop for a visit at historic Stirling Castle, a centuries-old monument that remains a symbol of Scottish independence and national pride. After exploring the grounds and discovering the Great Kitchens, the Queen Anne Gardens and the Stirling Heads Gallery, you’ll walk down the hill to the city center and enjoy lunch on your own. Following lunch, transfer to the Scottish Crannog Centre on the banks of Loch Tay, where you’ll join a historical expert for a guided visit of the facility and museum. On the tour, you’ll learn about the crannogs—houses built on artificial islands over water—and get a glimpse into the lives of the people who lived in them 2,500 years ago. You’ll also examine ancient artifacts and discover skills and technologies of the past with hands-on demonstrations. Arrive in Pitlochry in the evening and enjoy dinner at your leisure.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Day 4 pitlochry.

Enjoy breakfast before going on a guided walk of Pitlochry with a local expert. Learn about the town’s history and how life was spent in this famous holiday resort destination that is rich in Victorian heritage. The walk finishes at the Blair Athol Distillery, which is situated in the open moorland south of the town. Take a guided tour of the distillery grounds, where you’ll learn about the ancient source of water that flows through the grounds and contributes to the whisky’s smooth finish and mellow quality. You’ll also enjoy a whisky tasting experience featuring 3 different whiskies, then finish the visit off by seeing the distillery’s exclusive bottling process. Walk back to town from Blair Athol and have lunch on your own before transferring to Queen’s View, said to be named after Queen Victoria following her visit to the area in 1866. Marvel at the expansive view of Loch Tummel and take in the rolling hills carpeted in wild heather. Travel back to Pitlochry or you may choose to visit Blair Castle and Gardens. Dinner this evening will be at your leisure.

Day 5 Pitlochry/Fort William

Following breakfast, begin the journey to Fort William, traveling through captivating scenery with undulating hills. Along the way, stop in Kincraig to visit a family-owned sheepdog farm. Get a fascinating tour of the farm and a demonstration, during which you’ll meet the dogs, learn about their training and gain an understanding of the commands used in their herding. From Kincraig, continue to the quaint town of Aviemore, located in the Cairngorms National Park. Enjoy lunch in town before heading out on the final leg of the day’s journey. On the way, visit Culloden Moor, the site where the famous Jacobite Rising of 1745 came to a tragic end. Experience the powerful emotions of the battle as you’re placed in the heart of the action via the visitor center’s 360-degree immersion theatre. Next, travel to Loch Ness for a scenic drive along the shoreline and make stops at Loch Ness Viewpoint in Fort Augustus and the Loch Lochy Viewpoint. On the way, you’ll see the Commando Memorial and Inverlochy Castle. Continue on to Fort William, where you’ll have time to explore on your own.

Day 6 Isle of Skye Day Trip

Explore the Isle of Skye on a full-day excursion to this stunning island which was occupied in prehistoric times, then settled by Gaelic-speaking Scots from Ireland in the first centuries BC. Along the way, stop at the famous Fairy Pools, a natural waterfall phenomenon whose frigid pools are a vivid aqua blue. Legend has it that selkies would come here, shed their skins, change into human form for the night and bathe in the pools under a full moon. Enjoy lunch, then visit Portree, the main town on the Isle of Skye. Spend time wandering the bustling port and thriving cultural center. On your way back, stop at the Glenfinnan Viewpoint to gaze at the impressive views and perhaps a glimpse of the famous Jacobite steam train—also known as the Hogwart’s Express in the Harry Potter novels and films. While here, travel across the Glenfinnan viaduct, 100 ft (30 m) above the ground. Return to Fort William for an evening on your own and dinner at your leisure.

Day 7 Fort William/Glasgow

In the morning, depart for Glasgow. Pass through the untamed wildness of Glencoe and the Scottish Highlands, stopping at incredible vistas along the way, like the Three Sisters Viewpoint. Arrive at Loch Lomond, where you can relax and get lunch on your own. In the afternoon, embark on a boat cruise on Loch Lomond from the village of Luss. Sail south around the islands passing the ‘Narrows’—a winding stretch of water separating Inchconnachan and Inchtavannach Islands—and enjoy live commentary with tales and fascinating facts about the lake. Arrive in Glasgow in the evening and enjoy dinner on your own in this vibrant city.

Day 8 Glasgow

Spend the day in the port city of Glasgow, known for its Victorian and Art Nouveau architecture, as well as its rich shipbuilding history. In the morning, immerse yourself in a street art tour with a local guide, who will point out stunning murals and share the stories and inspiration behind each piece and the artists that created them. You’ll discover how the art scene in Glasgow has developed dramatically over the last decade as you stroll through alleys and under bridges to uncover some of the wall art taking the city by storm. The afternoon is yours to explore Glasgow on your own. Visit the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum or join a brewery tour. In the evening, get together with your fellow travelers for a farewell dinner.

What people love about scotland tours.

Such a great tour. Very active and on-the-go, so we were able to make the most of the time outdoors (instead of a bus). The tour itinerary has some flexibility and shuffling around which is great so you can dodge traffic, incidents. Travelling with young, like minded people. Shoutout to Branka for making this tour so fun, she knew all the best spots (avoiding people!), her enthusiasm and wealth of history knowledge. Highly recommend, 5 stars.
Me and my friend took the 3 day Isle of Skye tour and it exceeded all our expectations. We were lucky to have sunny weather and see the aurora lights but more than that we got really lucky with our tour guide Branka. She had such a positive energy, there was no problem she wouldn’t be able to solve and she had an interesting story to tell about all locations we went to ( plus the whole playlist of music we listen was carefully selected just for the trip). I wouldn’t usually go for a bus tour while on holiday but this one exceeded all my expectations. It’s a great way to see Scotland and learn about the history and culture. Thank you Branka, you’re the best :-) I’ll definitely join your tour again when I’m in Scotland.
The tour started fine; more time in Glasgow would have been better. All we had was a ten-minute bus tour through Glasgow without any information about what was there. At the end of the day, all we got from the tour guide was restaurant suggestions. The travel packet states that we stopped at Loch Ness, but we did not. The tour guide stopped off the road at a parking lot, and we had to walk up a road to look through some bushes and trees and see a partial castle, apparently on Loch Ness. If you were short, you wouldn’t get to see anything. That does not stop at Loch Ness, and the stop at Loch Ness is also listed as a tour highlight for the day, which didn’t happen. There were so many stops we could have made but didn’t. When we stopped at Glenfinnan, the tour guide only talked about the Harry Potter reference, no mention of the Jacobite monument. The tour was constantly filled with Harry Potter references, the guide’s political opinions, and insufficient historical references. No one cares what the tour guide’s political views are; just do your job. Also, at the same stop, it was the only stop with food available, and there was only a little café where several people did not get their orders after they paid, and the tour guide did not care. Some of the people on the tour also missed the monument because the tour guide did not mention it. The Aberdeen Altens Hotel was a complete disaster. The hotel was out in the middle of nowhere. If you didn’t go on the optional excursion, then you were stranded at the hotel with minimal options, such as a pool, where you had to make an appointment to use. It was not available, the hotel had an escape room in the basement which sounds like to beginning of a horror movie, but thankfully it was not open that day, or you could take a taxi where the closet place was a ten minute drive. Still, everything was closed that day, and the taxis don’t drive around the city, so you must remember to take down the number to get back to the hotel. Also, the dinner at this hotel was a disaster; it took over three hours to get through a substandard dinner. The chicken was dry, the potatoes were terrible, the fishcakes were overcooked, and even the dessert was awful. The tour guide didn’t even stay for dinner, and then the following day, she explained that Globus knew about the problem with the amount of time it takes to get dinner and that there was nothing they could do about it. Yes, there is; use a different hotel, location, etc. The fact that this is a known problem and Globus does nothing is despicable. This hotel and location are terrible choices by Globus. The tour of The Royal Yacht Britannia was a waste of time. It seems like it was just a time waster until dinner. Overall, this tour was below satisfactory and not worth the money.

Mark visited his home village this morning and with his brother took the stunning walk from the village out to Cruggleton Castle as the sun was rising. The Castle which was built in the early 12th Century under orders by Fergus, Lord of Galloway was an imposing structure on the cliffs overlooking Rigg Bay and Cruggleton Bay. The ownership of the medieval stronghold passed through the hands of the Comyn and Kennedy families as well as being owned for many years by the canons of Whithorn Priory. Little of the imposing castle remains apart from some ditches, foundations and corner walls but it is the fantastic arch which is the symbol of the grandeur of the vaulted ceilings contained within. • We then journey towards Inveraray, where we stop for a refreshment break before driving into the Kilmartin Glen, which is home to over 800 prehistoric and historic sites.
  • Our first prehistoric site of the day is the incredible Achnabreck rock carvings, which are believed to be over 5000 years old. This is one of the finest examples of prehistoric rock art in Scotland. Spread over several outcrops, the carvings are extensive and complex, with spirals and massive multiple ring marks, some reaching over 1 m across.

The Best in Scottish Hospitality—Adventures in Whisky, Golf, Fishing, and More

  • An eight-day tour of Scotland for four people, including historic castles, exclusive golf courses, superb fishing streams, and world-class whisky, with transfer between each in a private helicopter.
  • Plus, a private fitting at Scotland’s oldest bespoke tailor and an intimate voyage aboard a yacht once owned by HRH Queen Elizabeth II and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.

Bravo Whisky Golf , a specialist in luxury golf experiences in Scotland and Ireland, has created a tailor-made trip for Robb Report like none it has offered before. It includes whisky tastings at truly world-class distilleries, a private fitting from Scotland’s oldest bespoke tailor, and a intimate voyage aboard a yacht that once belonged to HRH Queen Elizabeth II and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.

But while this package takes in so many Scottish highlights, the focus is on golf. The trip will include six rounds, including two rounds at prestigious courses—first at North Berwick Golf Club, the 30th -best in the world, plus lunch with a member, and then 18 holes at the Machrie links (another top 30 course), which sits on the Inner Hebrides island of Islay, where you’ll be accompanied by your own pro. You’ll also play at Cabot Highlands , home to the Castle Stuart links designed by Mark Parsinen and Gil Hanse, and at Nairn, whose club was founded in 1887.

Wormistoune Castle is one of the historic spots you’ll also visit, where owners James and Gemma McCallum will host you for a private dinner to showcase the painstaking restoration they’ve undertaken of the 17th- century building. As for whisky, you’ll be greeted at Bowmore by its private-client director, Daryl Haldane, who will lead you through a tasting at lunchtime. You'll also explore the surrounding countryside in an Aston Martin, courtesy of the brand’s partnership with the carmaker.

You’ll spend time with Master of the Quiach Stephen Rankin at the Cairn Distillery , sipping a nightcap with him in Speyside; Rankin will take you through a cask-tasting of rare whiskies dating back to the 1940s and 1950s. And there's that fitting with Stewart Christie & Co. , the most historic tailors in Edinburgh, where you’ll be measured for a custom tweed gilet, and the tour of the royal yacht Britannia with the man who was its captain at the time of decommissioning in 1997. You’ll even score a fishing lesson with Michael Partridge, a master ghillie –the Gaelic name for an outdoors guide.

New Scottish tour for land reform artwork

The dramatic history of Scotland’s community landownership movement is the subject of a dynamic new art exhibition touring Scotland in the Travelling Gallery this summer.

Scotland’s land has long been uniquely concentrated in the hands of private landowners. The ‘Where We Stand’ exhibition will highlight six artworks that reflect how ordinary communities secured ownership of the land where they live, and created something transformational.

Where We Stand   is a   partnership between Travelling   Gallery   and Community Land Scotland, as part of the 100 Years of Community Ownership   project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Scottish Government. The exhibition is also funded by Creative Scotland and supported by The City of Edinburgh Council.

Community Land Scotland, Curator, Iain Craig, says: " Where We Stand will reflect the dramatic story of community landownership in Scotland – how people came together to upend Scotland’s challenging land history to create a better place for future generations. The exhibition will tell the stories and achievements of the pioneers of   community ownership.

"The six works in this exhibition capture something of the breadth and talent and imagination found in communities across Scotland - communities which try to revive their areas and live in balance with the natural world around them."

The exhibition and tour will be launched in Edinburgh on Friday (June 7) before visiting Harris and Lewis next week and Argyll on June 18-21. The tour includes, West Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire, Clackmannanshire, Dumfries and Galloway, and The Borders. It finishes at The Edinburgh Festival in August.

Lewis-based artist, Virgina Hutchison, highlights the link between Gaelic language and Land.

"‘ I’ve heard Gaelic described as a language that is felt, and as I listen to the Gaelic place names that scatter north Lewis like a billion stars, the intricate relationship between people and place unfolds, a relationship with the land that is so close and so ancient that it is not easily erased by ownership.

"There’s a power to the stories we weave through rocks, a radical act that is unfolding through each of these projects.’

Edinburgh City Council, Culture and Communities Convener, Councillor Val Walker says: “It’s important that we take time to reflect on the story of community landownership in Scotland, and this exhibition allows us to do just that.

"I encourage everyone to visit the exhibition when it is in Edinburgh to gain a better understanding of our history through the six unique pieces of artwork on display, that not only tell a story, but showcase the talent found in communities across Scotland.”
