Billy Bragg announces 40th anniversary UK and Ireland tour

Billy Bragg has announced a UK and Ireland tour to mark his 40 years in music – find all the details below.

The singer-songwriter and left-wing activist is due to hit the road this autumn following the release of his forthcoming career-spanning boxset ‘The Roaring Forty’ , which is out on October 27.

Kicking off in Brighton on November 14, Bragg’s 2023 tour will also include shows in Portsmouth, Cambridge, Cork, Dublin, Belfast, Cardiff, Birmingham, Leeds, Edinburgh and Manchester throughout that month.

In December, the artist will head to Gateshead, Nottingham and Bristol before completing the stint with a gig at The Roundhouse in Camden Town, London.

“Doesn’t seem like just that long ago that I was playing Thursday nights at the Tunnel in Greenwich, opening for whoever was headlining that night,” Bragg said in a statement. “I learned my chops there in late ’82/ early ’83 and I’m still putting those lessons to good use 40 years later.”

He added: “Hope to see some of you on the Roaring Forty tour this autumn.”

As part of his celebrations to mark 40 years in music, Billy Bragg has announced a tour of the UK and Ireland in the autumn. The full list of dates is below.

Punk rocker, soldier, Essex boy, folk singer, Skiffle aficionado, protest singers’ protest singer, patriot, optimist, lefty polemicist, author, soul miner, musicologist, champion of the underclasses, Cockney vocalist and all-round decent bloke who for bonus points manages to irk JK Rowling on a regular basis, Billy Bragg will release a career spanning 14-disc deluxe box set (3 LP and single LP versions also available) entitled The Roaring Forty | 1983-2023’ on 27th October ’23 on Cooking Vinyl.

Rocker Billy Bragg has announced he'll perform three special gigs in Whelan's this Sumner.

The Essex singer songwriter and political activist will perform three standalone shows on consecutive nights in Dublin as part of his UK and Ireland tour entitled "One Step Forward. Two Steps Back."

The gigs take place on 29, 30 and 31 July and each concert will see him perform an original and unique set list.

The 29 July performance will feature Bragg’s current set, which ranges across his 35 year career.

His second performance on 30 July, will see Bragg perform songs from his first three albums: his punk rock debut  Life’s a Riot with Spy Vs Spy  (1983), follow-up  Brewing Up with Billy Bragg ( 1984) and  Talking with the Taxman about Poetry  (1986).

His third performance on 31 July will see Bragg perform songs from his second three albums: Workers Playtime ( 1988), Don't Try This at Home  (1991) and William Bloke  (1996).

A one-day ticket costs €35.00 inclusive of booking fee and three-day tickets are available for €92.00 inclusive of booking fees.

They go on sale Friday 9 February at 10am from Ticketmaster.

Billy Bragg  has been a fearless recording artist, tireless live performer and peerless political campaigner for 40 years. He has released 11 solo studio albums:  Life’s A Riot With Spy Vs Spy  (1983);  Brewing Up With Billy Bragg  (1984);  Talking With The Taxman About Poetry  (1986);  Workers Playtime  (1988);  The Internationale  (1990);  Don’t Try This At Home  (1991);  William Bloke  (1996);  England, Half English  (2002);  Mr Love & Justice  (2008);  Tooth & Nail  (2013);  The Million Things That Never Happened  (2021); three albums with Wilco – ( Grammy nominated )  Mermaid Avenue  (1998);  Mermaid Avenue Vol II  (2000);  Mermaid Avenue Vol III  (2012); and one album with Joe Henry –  Shine A Light: Field Recordings From The Great American Railroad  (2016). He released a mini album  Bridges Not Walls  in 2017. His performances at the BBC were anthologised in  The Best Of Billy Bragg At The BBC 1983-2019  (2019).

Billy Bragg  added best-selling author/musicologist to his CV with the success of his acclaimed 2017 book  Roots, Radicals & Rockers – How Skiffle Changed The World.  He has written two books of political analysis –   The Progressive Patriot: A Search For Belonging  (2006) and  The Three Dimensions of Freedom ( 2019), which has been translated into German and Spanish.

To be expected from a career that has straddled many genres,  Billy Bragg  has worked with a wealth of celebrated musicians from different musical backgrounds including Eliza Carthy, Norman Cook, Dick Gaughan, Joe Henry, Kirsty MacColl, Ian McLagan, Johnny Marr, R.E.M., Natalie Merchant, Romeo Stodart, Danny Thompson, Robert Wyatt, Pete Seeger, The Philharmonic Orchestra and US alt-Rock band Wilco, with whom he created two critically acclaimed collections setting previously unheard lyrics by legendary American Folk singer Woody Guthrie to music.

Billy Bragg is a true legend, he's a man with a conscience who despite the serious nature of his songs manages to put on a fun and enjoyable show with plenty of laughs. He played a 2 hour set which was a privilege to watch.

Still a Political catalyst A chaotic journey through some of his songs off his albums of the early nineties a thoroughly pleasurable evening of anecdotes and meaningful lyrics which always deliver a message.

I've been a huge fan since the late 80's. My dream of meeting one of my musical heroes came true last night and I even received a "Solidarity Hug". It was simply the best! The show was amazing. I love his fearlessness in sharing his views on our world. I hope everyone felt as inspired to go out and make change in our world.

The most powerful thing he said last night, in my opinion, is that the reason people/politicians fear being empathetic is because they know that, "Empathy + Activism = Solidarity." Go Billy!

Says Billy: “In these challenging times, we all need something to hang on to. Like everyone else, my plans for 2020 have been disrupted by the pandemic, but today I’m announcing an extensive UK & Irish tour for this time next year to give me something tangible to work towards. My hope is that, by then, we’ll be able to get together again and enjoy the uplift that live music brings, to audience and performer alike. Hope to see you next autumn.”

Billy Bragg  has been a fearless recording artist, tireless live performer and peerless political campaigner for over 35 years. Honoured with the PRS Outstanding Contribution to British Music award at the Ivor Novello awards in May 2018, he is regarded a valuable statesman and activist. He has released 12 studio and numerous compilations, the most recent being 2019’s  ‘The Best Of Billy Bragg At The BBC’ .

His peerless career has been marked by numerous milestones, including a number one hit single, having a street named after him, meeting the Queen, being the subject of a  South Bank Show , appearing onstage at Wembley Stadium, curating Left Field at Glastonbury through thick and thin, and once sharing spotted dick with a Cabinet minister in the House of Commons cafeteria. Earning a mention in Bob Dylan’s memoir, he is the author of three non-fiction books, the second of which,  Roots, Radicals & Rockers , was shortlisted for the Penderyn Music Book award and was source material for a BBC4 documentary about the skiffle classic  Rock Island Line . Still as relevant as ever, in 2019 he sold out his three night special ‘One Step Forward, Two Steps Back’ tour at venues across the US and UK, making new fans and stirring the blood of older ones. All of which proves that at their best, Billy’s songs present what the  Guardian  called  ‘the perfect Venn diagram between the political and the personal.’

Special Covid-19 Entry Requirements at Artist Request

For entry, you will need to demonstrate your COVID-19 status by providing either:

•             Proof of a negative NHS Rapid Lateral Flow Test to be presented on arrival at the venue (such test to be taken 24 hours prior to attending the event at the venue).

You will need to demonstrate your negative NHS Lateral Flow Test result by showing us one of the following:

Text OR email confirmation of your result

OR by using the NHS COVID Pass, available through the NHS App

OR as a letter that can be requested by ringing NHS 119 (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) or Scotland 0300 303 2713

•             Proof of full vaccination - both doses received (with the second at least 14 days prior to the arrival at the venue).

We cannot accept vaccine cards issued at vaccination centres as proof of vaccination.

Please use the NHS COVID Pass to show your vaccination status using the NHS App or the NHS website to download it as a PDF or get it sent to you in an email.  

You can also get a paper version (vaccination status only - not test results - 2 weeks after having a full course of the vaccine) sent to you in the post. You do not need to be registered with a GP surgery or have an NHS login for this. You can get a letter (within 5 working days) by requesting a COVID Pass letter online or calling NHS 119.

•             Proof of natural immunity based upon a positive PCR test within 180 days of arrival at the venue (and after the 10-day self-isolation period following the result).

Please use the NHS COVID Pass to show your positive PCR test within the past 6 months using the NHS App or the NHS website, after you’ve finished self-isolating and up to 180 days after taking the test.
