Schooner America 2.0

Schooner America 2.0 sailing offers our most premium sailing experience in Key West Florida. America 2.0 is the newest, largest, most elegant yacht designed for Classic Harbor Line. Added to the fleet in 2011, America 2.0  offers the most exceptional Key West day sailing and sunset sailing one can find.

Sailing aboard Schooner America 2.0 will show you that she is the fastest, most refined, and the most comfortable schooner of our fleet. This is considered one of the best sunset sails in Key West!

The past meets the future aboard Schooner America 2.0 . She is modeled after one of the most famous maritime icons of all time!  Schooner America which was the winner of the first “America’s Cup” of 1851. The “2.0” aspect of our vessel refers to the eco-friendly nature.  Both her cutting-edge construction materials and her propulsion system created by the designers at Scarano Boat Building, of Albany, New York make this yacht unique.

Rather than finding a diesel-consuming engine room below decks, you find a large battery bank providing electric propulsion with smaller diesel assist-generators. If you peeled away her hull, rather than finding heavy fiberglass or steel, you will find an extremely durable 3-layered composite: a sandwich of cedar over balsa core, laminated with an epoxy resin. Split on a horizontal plane, this light 3-layer composite makes up the upper 70% of the hull while the lower 30% is constructed of marine-grade aluminum.

Furthermore, rather than a heavy wooden rig aloft, you find carbon-fiber masts, booms and gaffs. Together, these strengthening and lightening components of construction, coupled with her modernized power-sourcing, America 2.0 is provided with the ability to move through the water more effortlessly, efficiently and with minimal environmental impact.

Cruise port schedule, live map, terminals, news.

Key West cruise port

Region Bahamas - Caribbean - Bermuda

Local Time 2024-05-28 00:05

Port Key West cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Key West, Florida. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Key West is an island, city and cruise port in the Florida Strait (within Monroe County, Florida USA) with population around 25,000. Key West City includes also the nearby islands Dredgers Key, Fleming Key, Sunset Key and also Stock Island's northern part.

Key West (port locode USEYW) is approx 150 mi (240 km) from Miami  and just 90 mi (145 km) from  Havana Cuba .

As cruise port, Key West has 2 ship docking piers. The first/principal (Fisherman Wharf) is within walking distance from downtown. The second (Outer Mole Pier) is a free trolley bus ride away from downtown.

In mid-July 2020, to the November ballot was added a referendum (3 proposed amendments) to limit the number of big-sized cruise ships calling at Key West. The ballot's amendments restricted the ship's size ( max passenger capacity 1300), limited the number of disembarking tourists (max 1500 per day) and also gave priority to newer and safer liners - more environmental (engines, technologies) and with fewer accidents (especially onboard illness outbreaks ) and better VSPs (CDC vessel sanitation records).

  • According to a CLIA-commissioned study conducted in August 2020 (CLIA-Cruise Lines International Association), the industry's economic impact for Key West is that ~7% of the island's total spending is from cruise ship tourists who contribute ~USD 73 million of the island's total ~USD 1,2 billion annual visitor spending.
  • In November 2020, Key West's residents voted for the three proposals and effectively banned the large cruise ships, including the fleets of Carnival, Royal Caribbean, NCL, MSC.
  • In late April 2021, the Forida Senate passed (in a 25 to 14 vote) "Senate Bill 426" that could overturn Key West's initiative to limit cruise shipping. The bill (aka "State Preemption of Seaport Regulations") was introduced by Jim Boyd (Senator of District 21). In the bill, he indicated that allowing each port city in Florida to impose its own rules on the port's maritime activities could result in "abrupt changes in the supply lines bringing goods into and out of this state", thus disrupting the state's economy. However, to become a law, Bill 426 must pass Florida's House of Representatives.
  • On June 29, 2021, Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis signed "Senate Bill 1194 (2021)" (aka Transportation Bill). The Bill contains various transportation-related (road, airports, seaports) provisions but also doesn't allow ballots/referendums (conducted by local municipalities and counties) to impact the state's seaport businesses. "[the Bill] Provides that with respect to any port that has received or is eligible to apply for or receive certain state seaport funding, a local ballot initiative or referendum may not restrict maritime commerce in such port based on specified but unlimited factors. These provisions apply retroactively and prospectively, prohibiting, rendering void, and preempting to the state any conflicting initiative or referendum".
  • Since July 1, 2021, Key West's ban on cruise liners is history.

In 2019, the cruise port handled 417 ship calls and nearly 965,000 passengers.

On December 1, 2017, RCI-Royal Caribbean added a 5-night itinerary on Empress of the Seas visiting Key West and Havana (overnight). For summer season 2018, Empress OTS had scheduled roundtrips to Cuba from Tampa FL with a series of 4-5-night itineraries to Key West, Mexico ( Costa Maya , Cozumel ) and Cuba ( Havana ). For winter season 2018-2019, the ship was homeported in Fort Lauderdale .

On November 27, 2018, upon leaving Key West, due to heavy winds, the luxury liner  Silver Spirit collided with The Fisherman Wharf (aka Mallory Pier/at Mallory Square). The ship departed the berth at ~6:30 PM and started to turn around when strong winds stopped it and pushed it back towards the dock. The crash resulted in minor hull damages and no injuries, but the concrete structure sustained damage that left the berth unusable (remained closed until May 2019). Berth damages were estimated ~USD 0,5-0,75 million. Silversea agreed to pay for the repairs plus ~US$50,000 reimbursement (for not-received passenger fees during the restoration period).

In 2023, ACL-American Cruise Lines included Key West as a call port of its 7-night/8-day "Florida Gulf Coast and Keys" itinerary. The roundtrip from Tampa was specifically designed for ACL's newbuild catamarans (Coastal Cats) and was first operated by American Glory in 2023.

On this ACL ex-Florida voyage, on days 3 and 4 the ship stays in Key West overnight. This allows tourists to explore Key West City on Day 3 (with a complimentary guided tour to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum) and the Dry Tortugas National Park on Day 4 (visiting Fort Jefferson/Civil War prison).

The Caribbean island Key West was initially called "Bone Key" (Cayo Hueso) honoring the Indian skeletons found by the Spaniards on its shores when they landed here for the first time in the 16th-century. The USA bought Cayo Hueso from Spain in the early-19th-century, and eventually, the name was Americanized to Key West. Today, the island is best-known with its pleasantly warm weather and great beaches, architecture, historical sites, and easily-traversed streets lined with restaurants, bars, nightclubs, shops, galleries, theatres, museums. Cruise ship tourists may easily explore the downtown on foot and see Duval Street, Mallory Square, visit the Aquarium, Mel Fisher Museum, Audubon House, Hemmingway's House. A quick tour is offered by the Conch Train.

The island is one of nearly a thousand coral islets (Florida Keys archipelago) stretching southward from Miami. Key West is directly linked to mainland-USA (Miami) via Overseas Highway (113 mi / 182 km long US Route 1). Overseas Highway is part of US Highway 1 (serving East Coast USA) that has total length 2369 mi (3813 km), starts in Key West and ends in Fort Kent (Maine, at the USA-Canada border).

US Highway 1 connects most large US East Coast cities ( Miami , Jacksonville FL , Raleigh NC, Richmond VA, Washington DC , Baltimore MD , Philadelphia PA , NYC , Boston MA ) and is the USA's longest south-north route linking Southeastern US to New England.

:square:

Doing Photo Ops gives you money, followers, the “Pics or it didn’t happen” trophy/achievement (for 40 photos) and it adds towards your progression in each racing discipline.

All 4 racing series have a photo op menu called “Photo Album” that is divided into 3 categories. The categories are made up of 6-10 photo ops and amount to a total of 92 photo ops. You can view the Photo Albums in the Pause Menu > Activities > Select Racing Discipline > Photo Album.

In the Photo Albums Menu you can activate each photo op individually and see the exact requirements. This is by far the easiest and most reliable way to trigger each op. Then all you have to do is go to the locations shown in the guide below. The Photo Album Menu also lets you keep track of which ones you have completed. American Glory Christened in Key West, Florida

  • January 23, 2024

American Glory Christening

The American Glory, the second Coastal Cat in American Cruise Lines’ new series of 100-passenger ships, was christened in Key West, Florida on Jan. 21, according to a press release.

The ceremony took place at Mallory Square where the ship docks when visiting Key West on the line’s Florida Gulf Coast and Keys cruises, operating roundtrip from St. Petersburg.

The celebration included local dignitaries, community members, cruise guests and port and marina officials. Charles B. Robertson, president and CEO of American Cruise Lines, gave remarks and introduced American Glory’s Godmother, the Honorable Teri Johnston, Mayor of Key West. The Victory Belles entertained guests with music as everyone gathered for the ship’s official blessing and ceremonial bottle smash.

“Docking in Mallory Square is a privilege, and we are honored to be a new small piece of the Key West community. We are grateful to Mayor Johnston and proud to have her as the godmother of American Glory. We look forward to continuing to build on our partnership with Key West and other Florida coastal towns,” said Charles B. Robertson, president and CEO of American Cruise Lines.

The American Glory will continue sailing the Florida Gulf Coast and Keys itinerary throughout March 2024 and again in November and December. Later this year, the Glory will be joined by another sister ship, the American Legend, which also begins operating the same itinerary this November.

View of a Holland America Line cruise ship

Key West, Florida, US

One of the first things you’ll notice on your Key West cruise is the colorful gingerbread wooden houses and the amazing sunsets, and the constant crowing of roosters. Hundreds of the noisy birds—along with their quieter-clucking mates—roam the streets at all hours, and are nearly as synonymous with Key West cruises as its six-toed cats, the famous furry residents of Ernest Hemingway’s mansion in the Old Town district. They’re all part of the quirky charm of the United States' southernmost point, whose compact 11 square kilometers (4.2 square miles) pack in everything from gorgeous historic architecture and spectacular fishing and sailing to a raucous party scene along famed Duval Street. All of which is truly enjoyed by vacationers who cruise to Key West, Florida.

What Cruise Ship Was Used in Speed 2?

By Michael Ferguson

In the classic 1990s action-thriller movie, Speed 2: Cruise Control, Sandra Bullock and Jason Patric star as passengers on a luxury cruise ship that is hijacked by a madman. The ship in question is the Seabourn Legend, a real-life cruise ship that was originally built in 1988.

The Seabourn Legend was owned by the Norwegian Cruise Line, and it cruised around the Caribbean for many years. In 1997, it was sold to Seabourn Cruise Line and renamed the Seabourn Legend. It became one of their flagship vessels until it was retired in 2005.

The Cruise Ship in Speed 2

In Speed 2: Cruise Control, the Seabourn Legend is seen cruising along its usual Caribbean routes when it is hijacked by Willem Dafoe’s character, who has planted explosives on board and taken control of the navigation system. He then turns the ship into an unstoppable weapon with Sandra Bullock and Jason Patric’s characters caught in the middle of the chaos.

The movie depicts some impressive stunts as well as some exciting action scenes with Sandra Bullock’s character trying to save everyone on board from certain disaster. The film crew did an excellent job of capturing all of this action with some amazing shots inside and outside of the Seabourn Legend.

CRUISE SHIPS: NEW RULES ARE UNDERWAY IN KEY WEST

a group of people standing on a dock next to a cruise ship

Could this be it? Could a resolution be imminent after nearly two years of Key West’s great cruise ship debate?

We’ll know at the city commission’s special meeting at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, when officials discuss and decide on a resolution that proposes to “direct the docking of and disembarkation of passengers from cruise ships away from City of Key West-controlled property.”

The proposal on the table is to “direct cruise ship activity away from all public property to the Pier B dock, and ensure that cruise ship activity at the Pier B dock and any private property conforms to state and federal regulations,” according to the resolution on Thursday’s agenda.

In order to avoid running afoul of the state law that preempted Key West’s voter-approved cruise ship reductions and prohibits the restriction of maritime commerce by any Florida port, the resolution further states, “the City of Key West seeks only to direct cruise ship operations away from public property to the Pier B dock and not to prohibit cruise ship operations or to restrict maritime commerce.”

A CORAL SHORES TRADITION: SENIORS TOSS CAPS AT ISLAMORADA SANDBAR

The proposed resolution is a result of a long, legal mediation with Judge Sandra Taylor that included the city’s attorneys Shawn Smith and Ed Pozzuoli, as well as City Manager Patti McLauchlin, owners of the privately operated Pier B and representatives of the Safer Cleaner Ships committee, which led the charge against large cruise ships starting in mid-2020.

“It is the intent of the city commission that all cruise ships will dock at a designated, non-city controlled pier at the City of Key West, known as Pier B, and that when a cruise ship is docked at Pier B, no cruise ship will dock at a City of Key West-controlled property,” the resolution continues. “In the event that a cruise ships docks at a City of Key West- controlled property, it is the intent of the city commission that cruise ships with the capacity to carry 1,300 or more persons (passengers and crew) shall not disembark individuals at any and all City of Key West-controlled property; and that the number of persons disembarking from cruise ships with the capacity to carry less than 1,300 or more persons (passengers and crew) at any and all City of Key West-controlled property shall be limited to a total of not more than 1,500 persons per day.

“Pier B is expressly excluded from any limitation of cruise operations,” the resolution states.

The March 10 agenda also includes a proposed ordinance that would prohibit water pollution by cruise ships and make them responsible for cleanups of any such pollution. The ordinance also would establish a coral reef restoration fund and a water quality testing program, which many have said has been sorely lacking for Key West’s waters.

The final agenda item on Thursday’s agenda is titled “Agreement for Operations of Pier B,” but as of presstime late Wednesday, March 9, no further information had been linked.

The meeting takes place at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 10. A complete agenda and the resolution and ordinance text are available at cityofkeywest-fl.gov.

Cruises canceled following Carnival Freedom fire during busy spring break season

T wo cruises have been canceled this week during the busy spring break travel season, following a fire on the Carnival Freedom  the second on the ship in less than two years.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," a Carnival spokesman told Fox Business.

Initial information from Carnival about the fire came on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, confirming the fire broke out at 3:15 p.m. ET Saturday on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel while it was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas.

Passengers with upcoming cruises nearly immediately began asking if they would be canceled, and at the time Carnival said no. However, "a thorough assessment" was completed in Freeport on Sunday, requiring it to return to the shipyard on Monday afternoon for the required repairs to stabilize the funnel.

CARNIVAL FREEDOM CRUISE SHIP CATCHES FIRE FOR SECOND TIME IN LESS THAN 2 YEARS

While multiple witnesses reported a lightning strike, Carnival is investigating the cause of the fire. The ship's onboard team quickly extinguished the fire and no injuries were reported.

"It was scary, very scary, fire on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean," passenger Jamie Eubanks told FOX 35 Orlando while disembarking in Port Canaveral on Monday.

CARNIVAL FREEDOM CRUISE SHIP SEEN ON FIRE AT GRAND TURK

Cruisers told the TV station the top deck was closed the rest of the trip, and they did not get to visit all the ports planned for their itinerary.

"We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation," the Carnival statement reads. The cruise line is providing guests on both canceled cruises with a full refund and a 100 percent future cruise credit.

Carnival thanked the passengers who were onboard during the fire, noting their "outstanding cooperation and support."

The Freedom's exhaust funnel previously caught fire in May 2022 while the ship was docked at Grand Turk Island in Turks and Caicos. Video from then also showed the ship’s funnel – referred to by some as the whale tail – consumed by flames and smoke.

News | Dali back in Baltimore port, freed 55 days after striking and collapsing the Key Bridge

The container ship Dali is eased into the Seagirt Marine Terminal after being freed from the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. (Jerry Jackson/Staff)

Crews refloated the vessel around 6:40 a.m., and 20 minutes later, the ship started moving slowly, almost imperceptibly. By 8:40 a.m., tugboats had guided the 984-foot ship into the Seagirt Marine Terminal, still bearing on its lacerated bow a chunk of pavement from the bridge.

“We took an enormous step forward in our mission to recover from the collapse,” Gov. Wes Moore said in a statement.

Moore, who watched the operation from a boat about 500 feet from the Dali, lauded those who worked safely and speedily in the massive and ongoing recovery effort led by the Key Bridge Response Unified Command. That’s the multiagency effort led by the Coast Guard, Army Corps of Engineers, the Maryland Department of the Environment, the Maryland Transportation Authority, and state police.

The Dali’s slow-motion, 2.5-mile journey returned it to the port it had left 55 days earlier. Shortly after departure, it lost power and careened into one of the bridge’s support pillars, plunging the span into the river. Six construction workers who were repairing potholes on the span died .

Darrell Wilson, a spokesman for the Synergy Marine Group that manages the ship, said the vessel’s return to port was “a relief for all of us and a reflection of all of the hard work of Unified Command and all of the salvage workers.”

Crews began laborious preparations Sunday to free the Dali, targeting the operation to take advantage of high tide at 5:24 a.m. Monday. The ship remained immobile for the next 90 minutes, though, surrounded by salvage equipment, tugboats and a piece of the shattered bridge jutting from the water nearby.

The Dali is expected to remain in port for a few weeks and eventually travel to Norfolk, Virginia, for repairs.

Its original crew, 20 men from India and one from Sri Lanka, are expected to remain on board for now as the visas that they sail under are believed to have expired, Wilson said.

Crew members generally travel on visas that, according to a Customs and Border Protection document , allow them “landing privileges” to remain in the U.S. as long as a vessel is here — but that can’t exceed 29 days. The Dali was stranded for 55 days.

“At a certain point, we will be working with the authorities to see if we can get some shore leave granted for them,” he said. “Our ultimate goal is to get the crew off the ship so they can get back to their families.”

That may take some time, though, as investigations in the bridge strike continue and the crew may need to be questioned, Wilson said.

The FBI and the National Transportation Safety Board are probing the collapse of the bridge. The FBI boarded the vessel in April, confiscated the crew members’ phones and has yet to return them. Crew members were given replacement phones, but still lack the personal data on their original devices, Wilson said.

Unions representing the crew said the members have experienced distress , particularly after they gave up their phones and lost access to family photos and online banking information, and feared being “criminalized” over the incident.

Two additional crew members were added to the ship previously to help with the extra workload, Wilson said, with a goal of eventually swapping out the original crew.

Early Monday, the Dali’s impending movement was signaled by a long blare of a horn. Viewed from the south, at Riviera Beach in Anne Arundel County, the vessel with its now-familiar stack of multicolored containers, stirred around 7 a.m. Over the next hour, the freighter progressively moved faster as it was tugged backward into the harbor. Then, the tugs pivoted the ship and towed it for roughly another hour toward Seagirt.

The refloat operation required crews to consider an underwater Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. gas line near where the ship had been stuck. BGE and Unified Command spokespersons said Monday that there was no damage to the line, although a Maryland Public Service Commission spokesperson said “the condition of the pipeline is still being investigated” as “the ship has just been refloated.”

The utility company earlier released gas from a section of the pipe and is working with Unified Command to restore it, a process that could be done within a month, BGE spokesperson Ann Mooney said.

Once en route to the port, the Dali was clocked at about 1.2 knots at one point, according to an online ship tracker.

Dali freed from Key Bridge and moved to Port of Baltimore | PHOTOS

Just a week ago, crews used controlled explosives to break up a massive section of the bridge that had landed on the bow of the ship. They then had to ensure a path for the ship back to port, and, on Sunday, began the final preparations for it to be refloated.

The removal of the ship, an action that  drastically altered the silhouette of the bridge collapse site , was a leap forward in crews’ efforts to clear the main shipping channel into the port, which has received only limited vessel traffic over the past several weeks via temporary alternate channels.

The Dali, which had just left the Seagirt terminal before crashing into the bridge in March, came back Monday to a port that looked noticeably different. There were far fewer containers stored near the berths due to the reduction in marine traffic.

Around 20 ships are expected to arrive within the next seven days at the port’s public terminals, and the vessel schedule is “extremely strong through the end of the month,” Maryland Port Administrator Jonathan Daniels said. He said the first significant return to normalcy is being seen with bookings for “roll-on roll-off” vessels, which are a hallmark of the port’s regular operations.

Before Monday, about half of the 50-foot deep, 700-foot wide federal channel was cleared. That channel is expected to fully reopen to commercial marine traffic by the end of the month.

In the meantime, vessel traffic remains restricted. The Unified Command said it anticipates the federal channel will soon be 400 feet wide and 50 feet deep.

“We’re going to be close to back to normal for the ability for vessels to transit,” Daniels said.

What will take longer to rebound is the volume of inbound container ship traffic, he said, noting that shippers have been cautious about booking stops in Baltimore, given the fluid traffic situation up to now.

“In the maritime world, it’s very expensive to make a mistake” and sit at anchor for several days, Daniels said.

He said a greater increase in cargo traffic should become visible starting in June, thanks to the quick work of salvors, and as shippers become more confident about coming to Baltimore.

The Dali’s move also marked a pivotal moment in the Unified Command’s daily operations. The agencies will leave their emergency office at the Maryland Cruise Terminal, parting ways for their respective worksites as cruise ship traffic resumes .

Unified Command salvage crews will now resume their work of clearing bridge wreckage from the Fort McHenry Channel. The state agency responsible for the bridge, the transportation authority, is in charge of any wreckage outside of the federal channel.

To clear the Fort McHenry Channel to its full depth, it’s likely at least some dredging will be required, Cynthia Mitchell, a spokesperson for the Baltimore district of the Army Corps of Engineers, said in an email.

Crews will use digging buckets to scoop out an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 cubic yards of sediment from the bottom of the Patapsco, Mitchell wrote. The sediment will be processed with 7% to 8% Portland cement until it solidifies, Mitchell wrote. Then, it will be loaded onto dump trucks and transported to disposal sites in New Jersey or Pennsylvania.

Baltimore Sun reporters Christine Condon, Hayes Gardner and Dillon Mullan contributed to this article.
