Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip : Day-4 Kedarnath-Guptkashi-Chamoli-Joshimath-Badrinath

After staying for a night at Kedarnath, the next day we rode back by helicopter in early morning. Our return journey ride was scheduled at 7 AM in the morning. The weather was clear and it was relieving sign for me as the weather could have disturbed at any time in Kedarnath.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip route

After reaching back to Phata, we started for Badrinath via Guptkashi. The distance between Kedarnath to Badrinath is 200 Kms  Via Guptkashi and it takes 10-12 hours to complete the journey. As we drove Badrinath to Kedarnath by road journey, we walked past small villages and towns and reached to Chopta. It is a well developed beautiful hill station and a superb trekking destination in Uttarakhand. It is surrounded by meadows and evergreen forest with spectacular views of mighty Himalayan ranges which attracts many trekkers.  It is famous for temples and it is a gateway to so many treks in the region like Chopta-Tungnath and many more. As we started early in the morning; took a break at Chopta for a hot breakfast.

As we crossed Chopta, the road became more serpentine with the dense forest surrounding it. The jacaranda flowers were in full bloom, the colorful village houses dotted along the road and the curvy road was giving me goosebumps during the ride. Chopta is one of the beautiful places of Uttarakhand and don’t miss to stop by it on Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip.

After crossing Chopta, we reached Chamoli-Gopeshwar. It was early evening when we reached to Joshimath – a holy shrine 45 Kms before Badrinath. The town of Badrinath remains snowbound for six months in a year and Lord Badrinarayan i.e Lord Vishnu was brought to the  Narsimha Temple at Joshimath by the head Priests with the holy ceremony. This way Joshimath is also known as the ‘winter abode’ of Lord Badrinath . So on the way to Badrinath, must include this beautiful temple during your Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip

We quickly visited the Narsimha Temple which is 1200 years old. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the deity of the temple is the 4 th incarnation of Lord Vishnu- Narsimha Avtar in the form of half Lion and half man. It is said that the trip to Badrinath is incomplete without visiting the Narsimha Temple.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip Joshimath town

As we crossed Joshimath, the road was in bad condition at some patches till Govindghat. It is base for a trek to Valley of Flowers which starts from Ghangharia. It is one of the holy places for Sikhs and we saw many Sikh devotees on the way. As you cross Govindghat, the road becomes curvier and it was almost cut through the rocks. I was delighted to see the mighty Alaknanda river flowing on one side and a serpentine road on the other; it was like a roller-coaster ride to Badrinath.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip

It was dark when we reached to Badrinath. After driving for more than 10 hours it was time for some rest!!

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip : Day-5: Badrinath

Badrinath town

Badrinath is located at 10,170 ft is the abode of Lord Vishnu and one of the most revered places among char Dham for Hindus. It is located on the banks of the Alaknanda river between Nar Narayan mountain range, with Neelkanth peak in the background.

In the morning, we proceeded for visiting the Badrinath Temple which is one of four important temples in Uttarakhand. The road that leads to the temple is full of shops selling religious offerings, CDs, winter wears, Photographs, etc. As we crossed it, we reached the bridge on the Alaknanda River which leads to the temple area. The temple dates back to a century ago when Adi Shankaracharya established math here (today’s Joshimath). The temple is also believed to be of Buddhist origin and later it was converted to a Hindu temple.

Badrinath temple visit

At first look, I was delighted with the colors of the temple which are conventionally bright that left me in awestruck. I loved the decoration of the temple and I was tempted to click so many pictures of it. It does all the justice for the long journey. I was lost in the charming aura of this temple.

Interesting facts about the Badrinath Temple:

  • As far no historical records have been found about Badrinath temple’s origin but some of the accounts state that a Buddhist shrine was present here before Adi Shankaracharya converted it into a Hindu shrine. Also, the architecture and the brightly painted façade of the Badrinath temple is similar to that of a Buddhist vihara (temple) which draws our attention to the fact.
  • The Badrinath Temple is among the four pilgrimages of Hindus. It is situated on the Alaknanda River at the NainaParvat, near TaptaKund, which is a hot water spring. The temple has three parts: The garbhgriha, Darshanmandap, and Sabhamandap. The Lord Badrinath is seated in the garbhgriha, the second part is also known as DarshanMandap where all devotees come for worshipping, and sabha mandap is the outer hall where devotees wait for doing darshan of their lord.
  • The high priest of Badrinath is from the clan of Adi Shankaracharya. He is called ‘Rawal’  is traditionally a Nambudiri Brahmin chosen from the South Indian state of Kerala. During his span as a priest, the Rawal cannot marry and has to be celibate. For them, even the touch of women is considered a sin.
  • Conch which is a favorite instrument of Lord Vishnu is not allowed to blow in the Badrinath temple. According to a Hindu legend, when sage Agasthya was slaying the demons of Kedarnath the two demons by the name of Vatapi and Atapi escaped. Atapi took refuge in the Mandakini river while Vatapi hid inside the conch to save his life. Since then it is believed if anybody tries to blow the conch, Vatapi will come out. Hence, it is prohibited to blow conch in this area. But according to science since Badrinath temple is covered in snow most of the time so blowing conch might create echo- a unique phenomenon which can create turbulence in the ecological environment, cause ice storms and endanger human life.
  • Adorned below the Badrinath temple, the Tapta Kund is the group of hot sulfur water springs snuggled below the temple. It is believed that these hot water springs possess medicinal properties and is home to the Agni God, the Hindu Lord of Fire. Before paying obeisance at Badrinath temple, the pilgrims take a holy dip in this kund for purifying themselves. The temperature of Tapta Kund remains as hot as of 55 °C (131 °F) at 17 °C  temperature all round the year.
  • The name of the Badrinath Temple originates from a known word Badri which is said a type of wild berry. A mythological story increases the faith of devotees. The story is when Lord Vishnu sat in penance in the mountains of Badrinath; then His Better half Goddess Laxmi changed herself into a berry tree to shade her husband from the harsh sun. That is why sages and pilgrims belief in meditating here for mental peace and enlightenment.Hence, Badrinath is also known as “Badri-Vishal”.

Badrinath Temple Timings:

The temple opens at 4 AM and closes at 1 PM noon; once again it opens at 3 PM and closes at 9 PM. If you want to avoid the queue, visit it at night. You can perform special Pooja also which you can book in advance.

Places to Visit in Badrinath

The idol of Lord Vishnu is sculpted in black stone and it is seated in meditating posture ‘Padmasana’ hosed in the gold canopy. As you walk around the main shrine area, you can see the idols of Ganesha, Garuda, Hanuman, and goddess Lakshmi.

Best Places to Visit in Badrinath:

As you walk out from the temple, just below the temple, there is ‘Tapt Kund’(hot water sulfur spring) –separate for both men and women. The water of the Kund is believed to have medicinal properties and pilgrims take bath before entering the temple.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip

After offering our prayers, we left for visiting the Mana Village – Last Indian Village. As Badrinath is a Holy place, there aren’t many places to see in Badrinath. Nearby Mana has located 3 km from Badrinath at an altitude of 3200 meters. It is the last village before Mana Pass and 24 Kms from the Border of India and Tibet. It requires mild trekking to reach the village and exploring a few points of interest.

Mana Village near Badrinath

I was just happy to walk around and knowing interesting stories of River Sarswati-Vasudhara Falls and Bheempul. There is one more ritual here to have Tea at Last Tea Shop in India. We spent some time here and started back to reach Badrinath. So if you are visiting Badrinath, don’t miss to visit this Last village from Badrinath.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip : Day-6 : Badrinath-Karnaprayag-Srinagar

It was a very sunny day with a clear blue sky when we started to leave Badrinath in the morning. During our stay in Badrinath, it was drizzling. It has happened so many times with me that during my stay at a particular place; rain plays hide n seek and the sky is not clear; and whenever I am about to leave that place, clouds get clear. But I am not complaining as I was happy with whatever nature was offering to me.

From Badrinath, the road again passes through Joshimath and Chamoli. As we crossed Chamoli, we passed through Nand Prayag- one of the Panch Prayag(five confluences). It lies at the confluence of the Alaknanda River and Mandakini River. The distance between Badrinath to Srinagar is 9-10 hours, we didn’t stop at the confluence.

kedarnath badrinath travel guide

After passing through numerous towns and small villages, we pit stopped at Karnaprayag. It lies in midst of Nandprayag and Rudraprayag. Also, it lies at the junction from where one could travel to Badrinath as well as Kedarnath. Bedecked on the confluence of river Alaknanda and Pindari River- it is one of the Panch Prayag (five confluences) of river Alaknanda.

The town of Alaknanda is also known as ‘The city of Karna of Mahabharat’.While on a visit to the Himalayas, swami Vivekananda also meditated here with his gurus. With the hills in the backdrop and pristine surroundings, it is truly delightful place.

kedarnath badrinath travel guide

After capturing a few clicks in camera and offering prayers we started towards Srinagar. As the distance between Badrinath and Rishikesh was approx 12-14 hours, we decided to take a break at Srinagar. If you don’t want to go for a tiresome hilly journey; take a break at either Rudraprayag or Srinagar. The city of Srinagar is famous for temple of Dharidevi- 19 km from Srinagar. The city’s other attraction is the Alaknanda Hydro Electric Power Project.

We reached Srinagar in the evening. After some rest, we started to walk on the main road. The town was full of chat vendors and had a lot of decent restaurants too. It is probably the last town before the hill starts to Badrinath and Kedarnath. The town looks very pretty at night with dotted houses on the hills.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip : Day-7: Srinagar-Rishikesh

Rishikesh white water rafting

It was the last day of our road trip and was saddening as the trip was coming to end. It took almost 4-5 hours to reach Rishikesh. As we started descending, the atmosphere started to change from cold to very hot. We were leaving behind the hills and started towards more plains.

Route of Kedarnath to Badrinath

We reached to Shivpuri by noon and stopped there for a while. There was the rhythmic sound of Ganges and endless stretch of pebbles over there. This was a therapeutic site and rendezvous with the Ganges. The river rafting starts from Shivpuri and people were arriving at the starting point of the rafting. I had already done river rafting in the Ganges, so just spent time by the Ganges.

By noon we reached to Rishikesh on a hot summer day and ended our week long road trip to Badrinath and Kedarnath. Earlier we decided to explore a bit Rishikesh too, but due to hot weather, we dropped the idea and started to catch a bus to Delhi.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Roadtrip : Where to Stay in Badrinath:

The accommodation in Badrinath has so many Options, it ranges from guesthouses, ashrams to budget hotels. As they are pilgrim places; don’t expect luxurious amenities from them.

Food in Badrinath:

Hotel Saket – opposite to Badrinath temple (on the way to temple) is a very good option for the North Indian and South Indian dishes. We loved all the veg options here. Also, the town has numerous dhabas and decent restaurants which serve vegetarian food. It is a pilgrim place; you won’t get alcohol and Nonveg food here. At Srinagar, Hotel Shivika serves good food and very famous in the region.

Mobile Network:

I highly recommend carrying a BSNL SIM card if you are visiting Badrinath. Reliance Jio and Vodafone work but it gives occasional signaling.

Travel Tips for Badrinath:

  • Photography is prohibited inside the badrinath temple; don’t try to attempt it.
  • It is popular pilgrim place and one of the dham for Hindus; receives thousands of visitors daily as temple remains open for few months in summer.Be prepared to stand in queue. If you want to avoid it, visit the temple in night before closing of the temple.
  • Carry comfortably warm and heavy woollen clothes along with you as the season is always cold there, and at high altitude it is impossible to survive in lighter clothes.
  • As you are travelling in the hilly region; always start early and reach early. Avoid travelling in night.
  • Bargain well before buying woollens and other souvenirs.

This was all about my one-week road trip from Delhi to Kedarnath and Kedarnath to Badrinath. I tried to include everything in this post of  Badrinath Travel Guide. If you have any questions can let me know in the comments.

Top 12 Travel Tips for a Safe and Spiritually Enlightening Yatra of Shri Kedarnath & Badrinath Dham

Nestled high amidst the majestic snow-clad mountains of the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand , the holy abodes of Kedarnath and Badrinath are one of the most popular and significant pilgrimage sites for Hindu devotees and pilgrims. Kedarnath and Badrinath, along with Yamunotri and Gangotri, together constitute the revered Char Dham yatra.

The four holy sites of Gangotri , Yamunotri , Kedarnath and Badrinath are home to temples of the four most highly worshipped deities of Hinduism, namely- Goddess Ganga, Goddess Yamuna, Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. It is believed in the Hindu faith that going on a pilgrimage of any of the Chota Char Dharm sites is the ultimate test of one’s devotion, and the darshan of any one of the four holy abodes (dhams) or ideally all of the four dhams grant one the divine blessings of the Almighty.

Badrinath is home to the sacred and enthralling Temple of Lord Vishnu, also popularly known as the temple of Shri Badrinath. According to the ancient texts and scriptures of Hinduism, the holy temple of Shri Badrinath is considered as the most paradisiacal spot in all of heaven and earth. On the other hand, Kedarnath is revered by the Hindu devotees and pilgrims as the holiest of the Char Dham, as it is believed to be the home of Lord Shiva, and the most important of the 12 Jyotirlingas (lingas/shrines of Lord Shiva). It also boasts the largest Lord Shiva temple situated in the Himalayas.

The Do Dham Yatra (pilgrimage of two dhams) of Kedarnath and Badrinath pose the toughest challenges owing to their extremely high Himalayan altitudes and difficult terrains. Therefore, in order to make this strenuous journey a little simpler for you, we bring you this detailed blog in which we share the 10 best travel tips that you must keep in mind before visiting Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Learn about the Best Time to Visit

Situated at high altitudes in the Himalayas, the holy destinations of Kedarnath and Badrinath receive cold weather throughout the year. While the winters are extremely cold and harsh, and are characterized by sub-zero temperatures, the monsoon months, from July to August, see heavy downpours that make the roads highly prone to roadblocks. The opening timings of both the Badrinath and Kedarnath Temples are usually the same, that is, in the first week of May. However, their closing timings are different.

While the Badrinath Temple usually closes 10 days after Dussehra, the temple of Shri Kedarnath closes the day after Diwali each year.

With the temperature hovering around 17°C, the summer season (May-June) is the ideal time to visit Kedarnath and Badrinath as this time coincides with the opening of the temples (in May). However, one can also undertake the pilgrimage of Kedarnath and Badrinath in the months of September and October, just before the onset of winter.

Familiarize Yourself with the Best Routes and Modes of Traveling

While the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun and Haridwar railway station is the nearest airport and railway station respectively to both Kedarnath and Badrinath, the road routes leading to these places are quite different.

Situated in the Chamoli district in Uttarakhand, Badrinath enjoys good road connectivity with the major destinations of Uttarakhand like Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Pauri and Rudraprayag, among others. Kedarnath, on the other hand, enjoys limited connectivity with the major roadway networks of Uttarakhand due to its difficult and inhospitable terrain.

The route to Kedarnath begins at Rishikesh and heads in the same direction as the road towards Badrinath till it branches away at Rudraprayag. From there, it continues until Gaurikund (235 kms away from Rishikesh), which is the last motorable road point before Kedarnath. Frequent buses and jeeps are available from Rishikesh to take you to Gaurikund. It takes around 12 hours to complete this journey. After reaching Gaurikund, you’ll have to undertake a 14 km trek through meadows and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes to reach Kedarnath, the holiest and most sacred site of Hindus.

You are always advised to take the help of local guides when in doubt, as this will help them to avoid dangerous short-cuts and stray on treacherous paths leading to dead-ends.

Avail the Services of Helicopter rides/Mules/Palanquins for a Comfortable Journey

The most comfortable way to reach Kedarnath is by Helicopter. One can easily book and avail the services of Helicopter rides from the numerous helipads situated at Guptkashi, Sirsi and Phata. The Uttarakhand Police imposes heavy fines and penalties on persons found to be carrying alcohol to these sacred places.

Carry Power Banks, Dairies and Extra Batteries for Cameras

It can be difficult to get proper mobile phone network at all times during your Yatra of Kedarnath and Badrinath, owing to the dearth of mobile sim towers in such difficult topography. You may also experience frequent power cuts or long durations without electricity. Therefore, they are advised to carry power banks as well as extra batteries.

Badrinath – How to plan a trip [Complete Travel Guide]

kedarnath badrinath travel guide

Badrinath, among the four dominant Char Dham pilgrimage sites of India as well as the Chota Char Dham , is a sight to behold! Situated at an average elevation of 10,827 feet above sea level, Badrinath is beautifully nestled on the banks of the Alaknanda River.

Badrinath

Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Badrinath

The town gains its name thanks to the holy temple of Badrinath, devoted to the preserver, Lord Vishnu. Badrinath is one of the 5 temples dedicated to Badri (Lord Vishnu) in the Garhwal.

The temple in itself is stunningly gorgeous, thanks to its history & construction in traditional Garhwali wooden architecture. With the scenic views all around, the beautiful and lovely terrain – Badrinath will take your breath away!

History & Mythology

It is believed that the temple was established by Adi Shankaracharya and has been renovated multiple times since. In the 9th Century, the holy town of Badrinath was re-established by Adi Shankaracharya.

It is believed that pilgrims used to walk hundreds of miles to pay obeisance at the sacred sides. Apart from being an integral member of Char Dham Yatra, it is also one of the Panch Badri.

The area is known as Badri – signifying the dedication to Lord Vishnu and his dual form of Nara-Narayana. Thus, you would have heard in the Mahabharata, Krishna telling Arjun- You were Nara in former body and Narayana for your compassion and didst perform shocking harshness at Badri for many many years”.

In fact, the mountains are mentioned in Mahabharata multiple times- Pandavas are said to have ended their life after climbing their Ascent to Heaven –Swargarohini. It is believed that Pandavas traversed through Badrinath and the town of Mana.

Another story goes that when Ganga was asked to descend to earth to help the suffering humankind – the earth was unable to handle the sheer force and then Ganga was split into 12 holy channels – Alaknanda river being one.

Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, Badrinath lies between Nar and Narayana mountain ranges, right in the shadow of the Neelkantha peak. There are several turquoise lakes, beautifully stunning mammoth peaks and scared ponds as well as water bodies that truly makes Badrinath for a must visit!

Like most Himalayan places at an elevation of over 10,000 ft. – Badrinath is always a heaven for people who enjoy cool weather. Winters are especially cold – and often inaccessible. In the summer months, you’ll experience temperatures in Summers ranging from 8 to 19°C and Winters from -7 to 5°C.

Each of these idols are built in black stone. The idol of Vishnuji is in a meditative stage, encouraging the devotees to seek their inner calm as well.

The architecture of the temple will surely draw you in. It has a striking resemblance to a Buddhist temple and the façade is built out of stone with arched windows. You will definitely want to explore the sheer magnitude of the 50 feet tall temple and enjoy the calmness it imbibes in you!

Char Dham Yatra 2011 Begins

Apart from the temple – it is integral that you also visit the Tapt Kund – a natural thermal spring on the banks of Alaknanda. The temperatures in the spring touch 45 degrees Celsius – thus, making for a welcome change from the surrounding climate, apart from having healing properties. The Tapt Kund is regarded as the residing place of Agni Deva (God of Fire).

Narad Kund is adorned in the holy town of Badrinath and is the second prominent attraction of Badrinath. It is a sacred place from where Adi Shankara discovered the idol of Lord Vishnu. Narad Kund is a bay in river Alaknanda and is naturally enclosed by a rock.

Things around Badrinath

While the main reason to visit Badrinath is of course the pilgrimage, you’ll be remiss to not explore the nearby regions!

Vasudhara Falls

Literally translated to sweet nectar, Vasudhara Falls is one of the most enchanting places to visit in Uttarakhand. This beautiful cascade drops from a height of 400 feet. It is believed that the blissful attractiveness of the Vasudhara falls can only be enjoyed by those who are pure and unstained from guilt.

How to prepare your motorcycle for Ladakh Bike Ride or Spiti Bike Ride?

Given that it is a remote destination, you may imagine the sheer beauty and the heartwarming ambiance of this waterfall. This truly is like visiting a shrine for people whose religion is nature itself!

Mana village

Mana, the last Indian village prior to India’s border with Tibet in the Himalayas, is located in the district of Chamoli. It’s been designated as a “Tourism Village” by the Uttarakhand government.

The Chota Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand are the four abodes of holy shrines – Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yamunotri and Gangotri . All four of these temples are situated within the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The prominence of the Charm Dham Yatra is immense amongst Hindus.

Moreover, it is believed that every Hindu should do Char Dham Yatra at least once in their lifetime. The Great Reformer and Philosopher, Adi Shankaracharya, gathered together these Holy Pilgrimage places into a spiritual circuit around the 8th century.

Generation followed generations and hundreds of thousands of devotees have kept up the tradition of covering these pilgrimage spots every year. Thus, it is very common to complete the circuit in one religious pilgrimage!

Best places to stay in Badrinath

Given the importance of the holy location, you’ll easily find many places to stay here. Right from guesthouses & Dharamshala to affordable hotels as well as hotels – you will not be hard pressed to find a location. The only suggestion I can give you is book early and book in advance!

There is a GMVN in Badrinath which has all the basic amenities and a beautiful location.

Best places to eat in Badrinath

Since the holy town of Badrinath is situated at an elevation of 3,300 meters, you will be a bit hard pressed to find many restaurants here. There are only a handful of food joints and dhabas here. The food served is mostly North Indian with a few Indo-Chinese delicacies.

However, the choices are limited. Of course, goes without saying – non-vegetarian food is not served here. One must visit food place that serves mouth-watering delicacies is Saket Restaurant, located near the Temple Bridge. While the place is usually packed, you can enjoy the sound of the river, with a view of the temple while relishing on some piping hot Parathas.

  • Be respectful of the place and refrain in indulging in any activities that might harm the sentiments of the pilgrims. This includes alcohol & smoking as well as eating non-vegetarian food.
  • Wear conservative clothes. This is a pilgrimage and holds high reverence in the hearts of all Hindus. Thus, ensure you’re not offending anyone here – the place means a lot to its visitors.
  • The Badrinath journey is not as difficult as Kedarnath. However, it is completely normal to feel dizzy thanks to the low oxygen levels in the air. Thus, ensure you’re properly acclimatized and are able to manage the climb
  • Do not travel in the monsoon season. If you’re aware of the region – you’ll know how harsh and tough the rains can be. Best avoided then. It is better to visit during the start of the season or post monsoon.

This complete guide will allow you to enjoy your journey with proper comfort and make your journey easier.

Nestled in the lap of entrancing Indian Himalayas in Uttarakhand, Char Dham is the focal point of spiritual activities for Hindus in all over India.

In India, the Hindus believe that the Char Dham yatra opens the doors of salvation by washing endlessly the entirety of their transgressions and sins. These four shrines have incredible importance place in Hindu mythologies. As per this mythology, Shri Adi Shankaracharya gained opportunity from resurrection in the Shri Badrinath Dham. The entryway to the Yatra is Yamunotri. Next goal is the famous Gangotri holy place. From that point, the explorer needs to visit Shri Kedarnath Dham lastly Shri Badrinath Dham. The four objectives of life portrayed in Veda are the Kama, Artha, Dharma and Moksha. This yatra is an activity in the quest for the fourth goal - Moksha.

I and Mom visited primary two Dham which are Kedarnath and Badrinath alongside the Highest of Panch Kedar - Tungnath and Pancha Prayag.

Story Behind Kedarnath and Tungnath

It is said that Kedar means Lord Shiva and there are a total of twelve Jyotirlingas and five Kedar Dham belong in India. Kedarnath is the supreme among the twelve Jyotirlingas. It is believed that Pandavas were advised by Vyas Dev, that their sin of slaying their own cousins Kauravas during the war of Kurukshetra in Mahabharata, can only be pardoned if they will worship Lord Shiva. To follow his words they went on to find for Lord Shiva who was trying to hide from Pandavas because of being convinced about the guilt of Pandavas. In order that Lord Shiva went at Guptakashi and disguised as a bull. Nevertheless, Pandavas got the catch of him and the body parts of Lord Shiva in the form of bull got rematerialized at five different locations and were later known as Panch Kedar where the Pandavas built the temple of Lord Shiva. It is said that the ancient temple of Kedareshwar Jyotirlinga and the first of panch Kedar, Kedarnath was built by the Pandavas. It was Kedarnath where the hump was found.

Photo of Complete Guide Of Kedarnath and Badrinath Yatra 2/6 by Pamela Mukherjee

The third Kedar, Tungnath temple is actually associated with Panch Kedar temples which were built by Pandavas. Tunganath was the place where the hands were found! The facts also said that the main character of Ramayana, Lord Rama, meditated at Chandrashila peak in the vicinity of Tunganatha. Also, it is believed that the Lanka King Ravana, did Penance to Lord Shiva at the time when he resided there.

Story Behind Badrinath

Photo of Complete Guide Of Kedarnath and Badrinath Yatra 3/6 by Pamela Mukherjee

It is believed that the temple was originally established by Adi Shankara in the 9th century. It is said that he found an idol of Lord Badrinath in the river Alaknanda and enshrined it near Tapt Kund.

What Is Panch Prayag

Prayag signifies confluence of two or more than two rivers. It is said that Panch Prayag is holiest confluences of the rivers. The first Prayag is Vishnu Prayag where Alaknanda River is joined by Dhauliganga River near Joshimath.

Nandaprayag is the subsequent conjunction in the falling arrangement, where Alaknanda River is joined by Mandakini River. The third intersection of Alaknanda River is at Karnaprayag, where the deplorable legend of Mahabharata, Karna, did retribution to please Sun God. Here, Pindar River joins Alaknanda. Rudraprayag is the fourth juncture among Alaknanda and Mandakini River. The fifth and last association happens at Devprayag where Alaknanda River joins Bhagirathi framing stream Ganges, which streams down to the fields.

Checklist (Based on my Personal Experience)

* Carry enough cash, you will hardly get ATMs after Rishikesh.

 * There are a lot of fakes who claim to provide you best darshan, be aware of them.

 * Carry proper winter jackets and raincoats as the weather is really unpredictable there.

 * Wear proper shoes as the mountains roads are really hard to walk.

  * Carry medicines and fast aid kit like AMS medicine, Paracetamol, medicines for stomach upset, vomit, headache etc.

 * Have id proofs of original copies which can be required.

 * Do not trust on OYO for online booking as they have a very bad reputation in Uttarakhand. I myself faced a lot of problems as I booked my Haridwar stay with OYO on Make my trip website, neither I got my room nor they returned my money.

 * At Chopta you will not find electricity, they have solar power and only available for 4 hours at night.

 * Do not try to understand everything with logic, you might experience many things which have no logic.

"Fire is His head, the sun and moon His eyes, space His ears, the Vedas His speech, the wind His breath, the universe His heart. From His feet, the Earth has originated. Verily, He is the inner self of all beings."

The legend behind the formation of Kedarnath Dham is fascinating, tracing back to the Mahabharata era, where the five Pandava brothers sought Lord Shiva’s forgiveness for their sins. The lord, in the form of a buffalo, tried to evade them, but Bhima recognized his true identity and grabbed his hump, which fell to the ground, becoming the site of Kedarnath Shrine. The remaining parts of his body fell in four other places, known as Panch Kedars , where Lord Shiva is worshiped in five different forms, including Madhmaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar.

Itinerary - Kedarnath Badrinath Yatra Package

The most awaited Badrinath Kedarnath Dham Yatra starts as you arrive at Haridwar. You will be picked up from the Haridwar Railway station for a straight drive to Guptkashi.

The name of this holy place, referred to as "Hidden Varanasi” is connected to Kedarnath by several means. According to mythology, this is the place where Lord Shiva concealed himself when the Pandava brothers were searching for his divine glimpse. Lord Shiva first hid at Guptkashi but later went up and reached the valley to Kedarnath. Here the Pandavas finally got His darshan, and their wish was fulfilled.

Guptkashi is where the pandas (hereditary pilgrimage priests) of Kedarnath live during the winter when the temple is closed. Also, the Bigraha (idol) of Kedarnath passes through Guptkashi to reach Ukhimath, where the idol is worshiped for six months of winter.

On arrival at Guptkashi, check in at the hotel and take a rest. This place has pleasant weather in summer, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C. In the evening, visit the Ardhnarishwar Temple, beside the Vishwanath Temple, where the deity is half male and half female, symbolizing Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Overnight stay at the Hotel.

Your day 2 of the Badrinath Kedarnath tour package includes a medical check-up in the morning. It’s done to check your fitness level for the Kedarnath trek that starts from Sonprayag and takes you at 3,583 m above sea level. Pilgrims are requested to carry personal medicines, heavy woolen, toiletries, and clothes as they will stay at Kedarnath, and the night will be chilly.

Start your trek from Sonprayag to Kedarnath by pony or Doli. On arrival, check in at the pre-booked guest house. Thereafter, go for Kedarnath Darshan, one of India’s 12 Jyotirlingas. Attend the evening Aarti accompanied by holy chants at the Kedarnath temple.

The Kedarnath shrine is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites and among the four dhams in India situated against the scenic backdrop of the Kedarnath range. According to the Hindu belief, Lord Shiva, the God of protection and destruction, is worshiped as Kedarnath. There are many myths regarding how the holy shrine evolved. It is told that Pandavas who wanted to clean their sin after the Kurukshetra war reached Kedarnath for a glimpse of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was living in the form of a bull, and as he dived into the ground to elude the Pandavas, his hump was left there. The remaining parts fall at four different places, namely Tungnath(arms), Rudranath(face), Madhmaheshwar(belly), and Kalpeshwar(head), evolving into five sacred shrines collectively known as Panch Kedar.

After the aarti completes, come back to the guest house. Stay overnight at Kedarnath.

Wake up before dawn and reach the Kedarnath temple to attend the “Abhishek” ceremony at 4.45 am. Then, all the devotees can enter the Garbha Griha and seek blessings by touching the idol. After that, start a downward trek to Sonprayag and drive to Guptkashi. On arrival, check-in at the hotel.

Stay overnight at the hotel.

In the morning after breakfast, drive to Badrinath via Joshimath. On arrival at the sacred Dham of Lord Vishnu, check in at the hotel and take a rest. Thereafter visit the holy places in Badrinath such as Tapt Kund, Narad Kund, Brahma Kapal, Sheshnetra, Charan Paduka, Mata Murti Temple, Mana Village, Vyas Gufa, and Vasundhara. In the evening, go for Badrinath darshan and attend the evening Aarti.

Badrinath is one of the 'Four Dhams' and the most famous pilgrimage site in India. The holy Dham is situated at an elevation of 3,133 meters and is surrounded by the two mountain ranges Nar & Narayan with Neelkanth Peak in the backdrop. The place is also known as "Badri van", meaning "forest of berries" as wild berries once covered it.

Rise before dawn and take a bath in the warm water of the Tapt Kund, a natural thermal spring and attend the “Abhishek” ceremony of Badrivishal. After that, start your return journey from Badrinath Kedarnath Dham Yatra. Drive to Rudraprayag/Kirtinagar and en route, visit Joshimath.

Joshimath is the winter home of Badrinath. The sacred place is situated on the slopes above the confluence of Alaknanda and Dhauliganga. Here you can visit one of the four 'Math' founded by Adi Shankaracharya. The idol of Badrinath is installed in the temple and worshiped for six months of the winter. You can also visit the temple of Narasimha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On arrival at Rudraprayag, check in at the hotel.

On the last day of your Badrinath Kedarnath tour, start your journey to Rishikesh early in the morning. Known as the 'place of sages', Rishikesh is a spiritual town located on the banks of Ganga. It is surrounded by the Shivalik range of the Himalayas on three sides. You can visit the famous attractions in Rishikesh, such as Laxman Jhulla, Ram Jhulla, Triveni Ghat, Bharat Mandir, and Sivananda Ashram.

Later, get transferred to Haridwar Railway Station/Dehradun Airport, where the sacred journey will end.

kedarnath badrinath travel guide

Everyone wants to visit Kedarnath and Badrinath once in their lifetime as these places are not only one of famous Hindu pilgrim places but also famous for spiritualism and mythological beliefs. Situated in a high altitude area, proper guidelines and knowledge about these places are very important before visiting the Do-Dham or Char-Dham yatra. Here is the Complete Guide of Kedarnath, Badrinath Yatra with every detail of nearby places like Haridwar, Kankahl, Tungnath, and Mana village and complete knowledge about Panch Prayag. This complete guide will allow you to enjoy your journey with proper comfort and make your journey easier.

Nestled in the lap of the entrancing Indian Himalayas in Uttarakhand, Char Dham is the focal point of spiritual activities for Hindus in all over India.

The next goal is the famous Gangotri holy place. From that point, the explorer needs to visit Shri Kedarnath Dham lastly Shri Badrinath Dham. The four objectives of life portrayed in Veda are the Kama, Artha, Dharma and Moksha. This yatra is an activity in the quest for the fourth goal – Moksha.

I and Mom visited the primary two Dham which are Kedarnath and Badrinath alongside the Highest of Panch Kedar – Tungnath and Pancha Prayag.

Table of Contents

Story Behind Kedarnath and Tungnath

It is said that Kedar means Lord Shiva and there are a total of twelve Jyotirlingas and five Kedar Dham that belong in India. To follow his words they went on to find Lord Shiva who was trying to hide from Pandavas because of being convinced about the guilt of Pandavas. In order, Lord Shiva went to Guptakashi and disguised themself as a bull. Nevertheless, Pandavas got caught him and the body parts of Lord Shiva in the form of a bull got rematerialized at five different locations and were later known as Panch Kedar where the Pandavas built the temple of Lord Shiva. It is said that the ancient temple of Kedareshwar Jyotirlinga and the first of panch Kedar, Kedarnath was built by the Pandavas. It was Kedarnath where the hump was found.

It is believed that the temple was originally established by Adi Shankara in the 9th century. It is said that he found an idol of Lord Badrinath in the river Alaknanda and enshrined it near Tapt Kund.

What Is Panch Prayag

Prayag signifies the confluence of two or more two rivers. It is said that Panch Prayag is the holiest confluence of the rivers. The first Prayag is Vishnu Prayag where the Alaknanda River is joined by the Dhauliganga River near Joshimath.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B3wswjip8Bq/

Nandaprayag is the subsequent conjunction in the falling arrangement, where the Alaknanda River is joined by the Mandakini River. The third intersection of the Alaknanda River is at Karnaprayag, where the deplorable legend of Mahabharata, Karna, did retribution to please Sun God. Here, Pindar River joins Alaknanda. Rudraprayag is the fourth juncture among Alaknanda and Mandakini Rivers. The fifth and last association happens at Devprayag where the Alaknanda River joins the Bhagirathi framing stream Ganges, which streams down to the fields.

En route to Do Dham

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun, 239 km from where you can take a cab or local bus

The nearest railway station is Haridwar from where the journey begins towards Do Dham or Char Dham or Panch Prayag.

Every place is well connected by road with Rishikesh, Dehradun and Haridwar.

Places to Visit at Haridwar and Rishikesh

Haridwar is very famous among Hindus who come here to take a bath in the holy water of Ganga and watch evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri ghat. Apart from that, there are many temples like Mansa Devi Temple, Kalika Devi temple, Vishnu Ghat, Ram Ghat and places like Kankhal that are worth visiting.

Situated somewhat further up the Ganges than Haridwar, Rishikesh is considered the origin of yoga in India. It’s eminent for its numerous ashrams. A Ganga Aarti is additionally held each night in Rishikesh, at Parmarth Niketan ashram. You’ll likewise find various Hindu temples in Rishikesh.

Kedarnath Visit Details

You can check the puja procedure and online puja booking here

Tungnath Visit Details

Tungnath is one of the highest Shiva temples in the world and is the highest of the Panch Kedar temples located in the mountain range of Tunganath at the Uttarakhand district. Of all the Panch Kedar treks, the route to Tungnath is the shortest: 5 km starts from Chopta and can be covered in approximately 4–5 hours. Though the trek is a steep climb it is one of the easiest treks and the path is stone-paved with benches provided en route at intervals.

(Based on my Personal Experience)

  • Carry enough cash, you will hardly get ATMs after Rishikesh.
  • There are a lot of fakes who claim to provide you best darshan, be aware of them.
  • Carry proper winter jackets and raincoats as the weather is really unpredictable there.
  • Wear proper shoes as the mountains roads are really hard to walk
  • Carry medicines and fast aid kit like AMS medicine, Paracetamol, medicines for stomach upset, vomiting, headache etc.
  • Have id proofs of original copies which can be required.
  • Do not trust OYO for online booking as they have a very bad reputation in Uttarakhand. I myself faced a lot of problems as I booked my Haridwar stay with OYO on the Make my trip website, neither I got my room nor they returned my money.
  • At Chopta you will not find electricity, they have solar power and are only available for 4 hours at night.
  • Do not try to understand everything with logic,  you might experience many things which have no logic.
A video with details of my trip is below

“Fire is His head, the sun and moon His eyes, space His ears, the Vedas His speech, the wind His breath, the universe His heart. From His feet, the Earth has originated. Verily, He is the inner self of all beings.”

Kedarnath: The Kedarnath shrine, one of the 12 jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, is a scenic spot situated, against the backdrop of the majestic Kedarnath range. Kedar is another name of Lord Shiva. According to legend, the Pandavas after having won over the Kaurava in the Kurukshetra war felt guilty of having killed their own brothers and sought the blessings of Lord Shiva for redemption. He eluded them repeatedly and while fleeing took refuge at Kedarnath in the form of a bull. On being followed he dived into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface. The remaining portions of Lord Shiva appeared at four other places and are worshipped there as his manifestations. The arms appeared at Tungnath, the face at Rudranath, the belly at Madhmaheshwar, and his locks (hair) with a head at Kalpeshwar. Kedarnath and the four above-mentioned shrines are treated as Panch Kedar.
