What’s better than being able to watch your favorite performer from the 80’s? That would be being able to watch your favorite band from the 90’s perform on the same night!

Pixies and Modest Mouse are playing live on the 8th of June 2024, Saturday, at the Budweiser Stage in Toronto, Ontario. You wouldn’t want to miss out on this opportunity to watch these legendary indie rock bands perform on one stage!

Their joint 2024 North American tour will feature special guest Cat Power on all dates. It’s not just two amazing indie rock stars you will get to watch but three! This tour follows the wildly popular sold-out 2023 run with all three performers.

These legendary stars continue to grace their fans with Modest Mouse’s “The World at Large,” “Teeth like God’s Shoeshine,” and “Float On” as well as Pixies’ “Hey,” “Where Is My Mind?,” and “Gouge Away.” Get your tickets right now because they may sell out soon!

Pixies have gained their fan base since the late 80s influencing artists like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, the Strokes, Weezer, among many.  Coming from different music inspirations such as punk rock, religious music, folk and country, Pixies was formed in 1986, creating songs with stranger lyrics and touching on unusual topics. They grew popularity in the US, but even more in Europe. The band went through breakups and solo projects but eventually reunited in 2003. To date, they continue to widen their audience with the inclusion of the younger generations who enjoy their sound which is considered unorthodox. With seven studio albums, they have placed their name among the all-time favorite alternative rock bands. Their music is known for being both quiet and loud at the same time. Each Pixies show is one of a kind as the band plays whatever they want in no fixed order.

The GRAMMY Award-nominated Modest Mouse is an American rock band formed in 1993. Inspired during a heavy metal show, the band started with Isaac Brock, Eric Judy, and Jeremiah Green. Their music, as admitted by the band, is strongly influenced by Pixies. “Float On” is considered to be their biggest hit, topping the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 2005.

Opening the concert is American singer-songwriter Cat Power, who is most recognized for her eighth studio album, Jukebox, which was published by Matador Records on January 22, 2008. The album reached its highest position at number 12 on the Billboard 200 album list and number 4 on the French album chart.

The concert series is a combined celebration for these bands. Modest Mouse will commemorate the 20th anniversary of their beloved album Good News for People Who Love Bad News. Cat Power is continuously gaining popularity with her 2022 full-length album covering Bob Dylan's 1966 performance at the Royal Albert Hall. With the addition of bassist Paz Lenchantin, who formally took over Kim Deal's position in 2016, the Pixies continue with their style evolution.

With the three biggest names in indie rock on one stage, this concert is definitely one for the books!

About Pixies

Pixies have been acclaimed as the most influential, pioneering band of the late 80s alt/rock movement, having served as a major influence for artists like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, the Strokes, Weezer, and many more. And today, a whole new generation of music fans has been discovering and embracing the band’s “loudquietloud” signature sound. Quirky, catchy melodies have always been Pixies’ calling card; seven genre-defining studio albums, including the Gold-certified Surfer Rosa, and the iconic Platinum Doolittle, considered one of the all-time, quintessential alt/rock albums. Sell-out crowds all over the globe, Pixies’ live shows are unadulterated magic, simultaneously electrifying and lo-fi. Seventy-five minutes of the band playing anything they want, in whatever order they want, the classics and the new gems. And no two Pixies shows are ever the same.

About Modest Mouse

Having recently completed a sold out 25th anniversary tour for their breakthrough album, 1997’s The Lonesome Crowded West and played a summer ’23 run with Pixies and Cat Power, Modest Mouse continues to prove themselves to be one of the most consistent live acts today. Modest Mouse released their highly anticipated new album, The Golden Casket, on June 25, 2021 via Epic Records. The Golden Casket heralds another new chapter in the GRAMMY® Award-nominated multi platinum band’s unpredictable evolution. Produced with Dave Sardy and Jacknife Lee in Los Angeles and in Modest Mouse’s studio in Portland, the album hovers in the liminal space between raw punk power and experimental studio science, frontman Isaac Brock explores themes ranging from the degradation of our psychic landscapes and invisible technology, to fatherhood. The twelve tracks behave like amorphous organisms, undergoing dramatic mutations and mood swings that speak to the chronic tug-of-war between hope and despair that plays out in Brock’s head.

About Cat Power

With a catalogue of songwriting that’s unparalleled in the worlds of indie rock and American music at large—spanning several decades and ten studio albums—Marshall’s work as Cat Power has defied genre and convention, her legacy rippling through the work of a wide range of contemporary musical luminaries ranging from Lana Del Rey, Clairo, and Soccer Mommy to Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Angel Olsen. There’s a rawness and immediacy to Marshall’s music that has stood the test of time, with every new musical missive from her as essential as what’s come before it.

Modest Mouse is an experimental indie rock band that was formed in Washington state, USA by Isaac Brock, Jeremiah Green and Eric Judy in 1993. The band has had a revolving cast of collaborators which include Granddady's Jim Fairchild and Smiths legend Johnny Marr.

The band takes their name from a Virginia Woolf quote. Truth be told this is quite a fitting lineage as, like Woolf herself, fewer artists give quite as convincing a portrayal of someone on the verge of a mental or nervous breakdown as Modest Mouse.

Isaac Brock’s is the man responsible for that. His voice could convincingly stand up with the likes of Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Morrissey and David Bowie as one of the acquired tastes that you’ll eventually wonder how you ever did without it.

However, it’s when his guttural howl delivers his lyrics that things get truly worrying. The evocative images of everything from the endless dust bowl deserts of the American West, to the sheer expanse of space and the cold, unfeeling ocean posit how we as individual people can possibly mean anything compared to the vast canvas of existence itself. Don’t worry, there’s also some damn catchy choruses in their as well!

Catchy enough to have arguably lead the charge of indie rock into the mainstream after The Strokes and The White Stripes kicked the doors down. They have sold 1.5 million copies of April 2004’s “Good News for People Who Love Bad News”, the album which gave the world their deathless Billboard Hot 100 hit “Float On”. The follow up album 2007’s “We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank”, which featured the aforementioned Johnny Marr as a member of the band for the album’s creation and subsequent tour, was certified Gold as well.

On the surface, it would seem that they are an odd band to have Gold and Platinum albums to their name, but look closer and they always temper their experimental and haunting tendencies with solid gold hooks. If R.E.M are no more, they can be satisfied in the knowledge that there are still alternative rock bands bringing literate, profound and edgy rock and roll to arenas and concert halls the world over.

Live reviews

Much to my surprise, the band that appeared at Red Rocks last night was almost unrecognizable from the band I’ve explained above. Taking the stage in broad daylight, to a half empty amphitheater, the two original members (Brock and Green) were joined by six other musicians to deliver a powerful, loud-as-fuck rendition of “Dramamine”. Unfortunately, it would be the only selection from the 90’s, but it was enough to cause a flood of concert-goers to storm the gates and fill the remaining seats. It’s a shame so many people weren’t aware of the early start time (or Modest Mouse’s controversial position in the line-up), but Brock and his new seven-piece band were rocking a full house by the time “Be Brave” segued into “Ocean Breathes Salty”.

Shedding his denim jacket and long-sleeved button-down in favor of the t-shirt below, Isaac Brock’s intensity could be read in his clinched eyelids and quirky facial tics, as Jeremiah Green and Davey Brozowski teamed up on dual drum kits to shake the place with thunderous percussion during “What People Are Made Of”. After a good run of mostly cerebral selections, “Lampshades on Fire” was a welcome jovial moment that convinced me I needed to spend more time with an album I’d all but ignored.

Red Rocks can be a fickle bitch when it comes to weather, so nothing compares to the experience of being there, under a perfectly clear sky, on a warm summer evening. A quick glance up from our position just behind the sound stage revealed thousands of men and women dancing all the way to the horizon. Performing before the sun has a chance to set is never ideal, but if it’s unavoidable, there is no better place to do it than Red Rocks. The view from the stage is spectacular. And that spectacle could be seen in the eyes of the merry band of musicians as they swapped out conventional and unconventional instruments throughout the show.

There was so much going on that sometimes is was hard to keep track of who was playing what. Traditional rock ‘n’ roll tools were augmented with strings and keys and upright bass and sheet metal, not to mention the plethora of guitars Brock cycled through. As the night began to darken around us, a lit joint hung from Jim Fairchild’s mouth during the slightly sinister “Shit in Your Cut”; and then the Melodica came out for “Bukowski”, before a guy and girl (who I don’t think were actually in the band) introduced a pair horns during the full-on jamboree that was “This Devil’s Workplace”. Lisa Molinaro might have been the most impressive multi-instrumentalist up there though. As the night progressed, she demonstrated expertise on the viola, keyboard, and even the banjo (on “Dashboard”), while also lending her voice to backup vocals when needed.

What can't be said about a band that never fails to entertain? With a gentle yet tough sound, Modest Mouse once again brings their specific brand of music to the spotlight. And once again, it was superb to listen to.

Modest Mouse's unique brand of experimental rock is always intriguing. It's a certain style incorporating a clever blend of odd occasional instruments you won't see too often in typical rock bands. But that's the thing, Modest Mouse is far from being your average rock band. You'll hear them play violins, trumpets, hell even a banjo at times. But of course, this simply adds to the uniqueness of their sound.

Ultimately, Modest Mouse is no stranger to awesome songs to rock to, and spectacular ballads to sway to. Things can get as intense as the energizing "Satin in a Coffin", upbeat and fun as "Dashboard", or even calm and provocative as "The World at Large".

Even with their spectacular set list of amazing songs, the band truly sends it home with their frontman Isaac Brock. A genuine person, Brock finds ways to make the band's music feel as real as it can possibly be.

Though it's been 5 years since Modest Mouse has released any new material, seeing them live is more than enough to find out their past albums (with conveniently long titles) still hold strong and true to entertain. But fear not! For a band this good is always working hard to produce new things, and with Modest Mouse, one will learn waiting is common, but oh so worth it. Modest Mouse, how I love you.

Modest Mouse have been touring and performing as a band for over twenty years and their own brand of indie rock continues to delight fans as they appear as popular now as ever. Despite not receiving commercial success from their first few full lengths, when tracks picked from the early days get aired the crowd react incredibly positively.

Their 2007 LP 'We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank' reached #1 in the States so of course a large amount of this material gains best reaction from the audience. Huge singalong moments appear during 'Dashboard' and 'Fire It Up' and although these are quite polished pieces of indie on the record they are incredibly raw when performed live.

The indie rock sound becomes almost garage-like as the instrumental aspect of the live gigs feels more like a jam session than a polished performance. This is endearing though as no matter how big of a venue, the whole show feels incredibly personal and a fantastic showcase of the band's large discography.

I remember hearing about Modest Mouse back in the early 2000s, so I was surprised to see them come to my town and play a sold-out show at a local concert hall. Their live sound is a lot more raw and intense than their singles, such as Float On, which I came to love them for. Instead, they have many songs where they sound more like a garage band than a polished indie force - but that's a good thing! I was impressed by the experimentation the guitarists tried in almost every song.

Even though some of it was very noisy, the majority of the songs were all based on a powerful beat and melody so nothing was really lost. I was actually really appreciative of their live skills, especially how they changed up parts of The Good Times Are Killing Me for a live performance.

The crowd was very respectful during their less-intense songs, especially when the entire band was performing together to make a really awesome folk sound.

Modest Mouse was the supporting act for "Brand New" at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. That was surprising but worked out when we were able to leave after the 2nd Brand New "song" of shouting and headbanging. Punk? Not what I recalled from the Ramones, Clash and The Jam.

Anyway, MM was limited to about 45 min. and played with energy and enjoyment - http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/modest-mouse/2016/greek-theatre-berkeley-ca-6bff5e42.html

The voice audio was muffled and supressed in volume, awful, rendering comments from the band incomprehensible and the poignant vocal counterpoints lost. I'll look for a better context next time...

Modest Mouse is an incredible band. They are proof that amazing musicians still exist! But this was a Tuesday night show and we expected them to headline. We received a last-minute notice that was unclear and half-suggested that MM might go on first. We missed the first 45 minutes of their performance. And as well as the band played, they didn't seem to want to be there. Maybe that's because the sound was awful - something was wrong with Isaac's mic the whole time. Something was off. I can't wait to see them again but next time, I hope it will be at a different location. Oh, and we didn't even wait for Brand New to play.

I saw Modest Mouse in Santa Barbara on 5/19/18 and I was very disappointed with their performance and felt ripped off. My largest complaint is they didn't play Float On. I mean, you better have a lot of hits to skip your one-hit-wonder. I like some of their other songs but Float On is by far their best. My second complaint is the band sounds terrible live, they sounded out of sync, out of tune, and were just blasting us with ear-cringing noise. I have since seen Brandi Carlile and Norah Jones at the same venue and the acoustics were great, so Mosest Mouse just isn't talented enough to see live. Save your money

james.d.workman’s profile image

We were told by the venue "The Greek Theater" that "there will not be an opening band" and that "Modest Mouse" will start at 7:00 promptly. Well, actually Modest Mouse was the opener for a crappy band called "Brand New". Modest Mouse only played a short set and the last thing the lead singer said was "my throats dry" and they quit, never to return not even for an encore. Sound was off terribly. I spent a lot of money and drove a long ways to be disappointed in this terrible concert, and believe me, I've seen a lot of them. And the venue lied, why even send me an email with that kind of info? Get it together.

mikeherman’s profile image

Modest Mouse put on a good show. As far as stage presence goes, most of the band were just kind of standing in their spot focusing on the instruments. Only the lead singer really put on a "performance" and he was pretty over the top sometimes.

The band could have sounded a lot better if they had just turned the volume down maybe 10-20 decibels. It's not the band's fault, the venue is smaller in size and I've been to other shows there, so I know it has a history of lousy sound quality, but it was seriously loud for such a small building.

Definitely go see them!

Went to both Detroit shows and they couldn't have been more different. First show we stood one riser up main floor. The band was great. They didn't play as long as we had hoped. Only one short encore. Thursday show we were right at the stage in front of Isaac. Totally different crowd and the band fed off that amazing energy. They knocked it out outta the park! Fantastic night and two encores and just a fantastic show. So glad we went to both. Isaac's sweet sense of humour and cheeky rhetoric made me love him even more.

Don’t Text, Mommy’s at the Rolling Stones

Portrait of Justin Curto

It’s summer — do you know where your children are? For once, avoiding that ghastly Ticketmaster queue. While Taylor is off on her Tortured Poets Department semester abroad and Ariana Grande is in the Galinda bubble , there’s an uncommon dearth of young stars on the American circuit through August. Left to fill the gap? Older artists, who are hitting the road to tour new albums, celebrate anniversaries, or just line their pockets (and sometimes all three). Yes, it’s a season of looking back, whether that means to the Summer of Love or to those years when you couldn’t leave the house without hearing an Usher hit. So which Gen-X, elder-millenial, or boomer-friendly summer tour is right for you?

The Golden Oldies

These old-timers still got the goods! Frozen-in-amber acts the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band are playing marathon sets with a verve that’ll have you thinking they’re doping with Cialis, while Bob Dylan continues his never-ending tour, this time with Willie Nelson. Also, icons of the ’80s — whether that’s Janet Jackson’s dance pop or Metallica ’s thrash metal — firmly count as classic now. Dust off that leather jacket and embrace it.

Luis Miguel Through June 14

The Rolling Stones Through July 21

Janet Jackson Through July 30

Styx & Foreigner June 11–August 28

Willie Nelson & Family and Bob Dylan June 21–September 20

Doobie Brothers June 23–September 28

Def Leppard & Journey July 6–September 8

Sammy Hagar July 13–August 31

Metallica August 2–September 1

Deep Purple August 14–September 8

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band August 15–September 15

The OG Lollapaloozers

Gen-Xers can have a grunge-girl summer with Pearl Jam, finally see Missy Elliott headline a tour, or lean into dadhood and catch Wilco for the 27th time. You even have two chances to see Sublime, depending on whether you want the real guys , who are playing with Bradley Nowell’s son, or you’re a big Rome fan for some reason.

Sublime June 8–September 29

Sublime With Rome Through Oct 4

Hootie & the Blowfish Through October 12

Pearl Jam August 12–September 29

Wilco June 12–July 5

New Kids on the Block June 14–August 25

SWV & Xscape June 27–August 18

Missy Elliott July 4–August 23

Limp Bizkit July 16–August 24

Creed July 17–December 5

Green Day July 29–September 28

Bikini Kill August 15–September 12

Incubus August 23–September 12

The ’90s Wannabes

Vampire Weekend doesn’t technically belong with the Gen-Xers. But they did leave the neo–dad rock of 2019’s Father of the Bride for ’90s New York City nostalgia on this year’s Only God Was Above Us, so consider them ’90s in spirit. Death comes for us all.

Vampire Weekend June 6–October 17

The Stars of TRL

From two-fifths of *NSYNC to five-fifths of P!nk (a.k.a. just P!nk), this season’s highest-profile pop shows are for the Y2k MTV-nostalgia crowd (c ondolences to the J.Lo fans ). Of the paltry few things millennial culture can take pride in, these performers’ live acts are among them — just ask anyone who saw Usher in Vegas.

Justin Timberlake Through December 20

Joey Fatone & AJ McLean Through August 30

Blink-182 June 20–October 11

Usher August 14–November 30

P!nk August 10–November 23

The Country Elders

Old country fans who love complaining about how the genre isn’t as good as it was back in their day will have ample opportunity to relive it. Alabama and George Strait are repping the best of the ’80s (alongside old soul Chris Stapleton), Tim McGraw and Clint Black are resurrecting their classic ’90s sound , and Kenny Chesney is delivering all those laid-back, turn-of-the-century hits. Even if, for some reason, you’re longing for 2010s bro-country, well, Luke Bryan’s on tour too.

Tim McGraw Through September 1

George Strait & Chris Stapleton Through July 20

Kenny Chesney Through August 25

Luke Bryan June 13–September 14

Alabama June 13–November 9

Clint Black June 13–November 9

The Cross-Generational Diplomats

What’s a band to do when they’re not a big enough draw to play amphitheaters on their own? Team up with another band that’s about 20 years older (or younger!). These acts are ambassadors, bringing together generations of indie-music nerds (Modest Mouse & Pixies), karaoke balladeers (Train & REO Speedwagon), or fans of groovy Bay Area rockers (Santana & Counting Crows).

Modest Mouse & Pixies Through June 30

Santana & Counting Crows June 14–September 2

Train & REO Speedwagon July 8–September 11

Young Music That Feels Old

Okay, here’s where we can build some bridges. This is the ‘take your tween daughter or younger cousin to one of these and earn Mom Cred, Dad Cred, or the much less vaunted Cousin Cred(?)’ material. Proving to older generations that what’s popular today isn’t that bad is a fool’s errand. Well, except for right now, while old-fashioned rootsy folk and country music is topping the charts. Parents will probably like the heart-baring Noah Kahan and the country rogue Zach Bryan as much as their zillennial kids .

Niall Horan Through August 3

Noah Kahan Through August 4

Tyler Childers Through August 24
