Iggy Pop Kicks Off All-Star Mini Tour: Videos, Set List

Iggy Pop opened a brief tour in support of new album Every Loser on Thursday night, showcasing a number of tracks from the LP alongside some of his classics.

The rocker performed at Los Angeles' Regent Theater with an all-star band featuring bassist Duff McKagan , drummer Chad Smith and guitarist Andrew Watt , all of whom appear on the record.

Pop delivered six songs off  Every Loser , including singles "Frenzy" and "Strung Out Johnny." He also revisited  Lust for Life and  The Idiot and dipped into his Stooges stash, playing classics "Raw Power," "Gimme Danger" and "Search and Destroy." A cover of Lou Reed 's "Walk on the Wild Side" appeared in the encore.

The full set list and performance videos can be seen below.

Every Loser came about after Pop and Watt met each other last year. “We started chatting, and [Watt] said, ‘Look, I’d really like to send you some tracks,’ and I sorta said, ‘Well, OK, do it,'” Pop recalled  in January. “He didn’t pressure me in any way. We didn’t set out with some sort of plan like, ‘This has to be an album’ or ‘This has to be an EP’ or ‘This has to come out’ at all. But I was enjoying what we were doing and enjoying the music.”

Pop said the hard-rocking LP "just sort of came along. Especially if you’re my age, you can’t really grimace and tightened your fist and say, ‘OK, goddammit, I’m gonna put together a rock album!’ It just kind of happened. So the credit goes to [Watt] for having the drive and interest – and also, I would say, some credit goes to me for … having a feel for what would work best with what he had prepared.”

Watt added that he’d been driven by the concept of, “What do I want to hear this guy sing? If I’m in the front row with this kick-ass band and the punk rock James Brown singing, what do I want to hear?’”

Pop's  mini-tour stops in San Francisco on Saturday followed by L.A., Hollywood and Las Vegas, ending on April 28.

Iggy Pop Unites With Duff McKagan, Chad Smith at Ferocious ‘Every Loser’ Tour Launch in L.A.

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Over the past few years, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan have played just about every stadium on the planet with their respective bands. But on Friday night, they scaled down drastically at the 1,100-seat Regent Theater in Los Angeles to serve as Iggy Pop ‘s rhythm section at the launch of his five-show West Coast tour.

The supergroup, which also features guitarists Andrew Watt and Jamie Hince, spent 80 minutes ripping through songs from Iggy’s excellent new LP Every Loser , and classics from his six-decade career, both solo and with the Stooges. It was, without any doubt, one of the greatest rock concerts I’ve seen in years. It was also a vivid reminder that Iggy, even a day shy of his 77th birthday, remains the most electrifying frontman on the planet.

Let’s hope they find a way to take this show to other parts of the country in the near future. It’s almost cruel to put something together this magical and only do it five times.

Iggy Pop is a rock singer, songwriter, actor and producer hailing from Muskegon, Michigan, USA and born on the 21st of April 1947. He is one of the most electrifying performers in the history of rock, both as a solo artist and as frontman of legendary proto-punks The Stooges.

James Newell Osterberg was a misfit. Maybe not an outcast but definitely outside of his natural habitat by the time he got to junior high. You see, Osterberg was raised in a trailer park in Ypsilanti, Michigan by a pair of near-penniless parents, while he was going to school with the president of the Ford Motor Company’s son in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His peers were of a certain social and economic stature that Osterberg was not a part of but that’s absolutely not to say that he had an unhappy childhood.

Quite the opposite is true, and a large part of that was due to how unconditionally supporting and loving his parents were. They helped out as much as they could, to the extent that once he took up the drums, his parents let him have the master bedroom of their trailer so he could have enough room for a drum kit. This space to practise paid off, and by the time he was in high school Osterberg was playing for a number of different bands. One of them was called The Iguanas, and playing with them led to him gaining the nickname Iggy, which would stay with him his entire performing career.

While playing, the newly christened Iggy discovered a love of the blues, playing with a number of local blues inspired bands like The Prime Movers. Iggy was so taken with the style that he dropped out of university and moved to Chicago with the express intention of learning as much about the blues as he could. While he was down there, inspired as he was by The Sonics, The Doors and his home state heroes the MC5, he formed a band of his own called The Psychedelic Stooges along with Ron and Dave Asheton on guitar and drums, respectively, and Dave Alexander on bass.

In 1967, Iggy had an experience that would go on to define a lot of his artistry, persona and all of his performance style. He watched The Doors play a concert in Michigan and was utterly taken by Jim Morrison’s extreme behaviour and wilful antagonism of the audience. He was inspired, and he decided to push the boundaries of stage performance as far as they could go, adding stage diving, rolling around in broken glass and even vomiting on stage to his bands live shows. These live shows got them a lot of exposure and hype, and in 1968, they followed The Doors again, signing with Elektra Records a mere year after their live debut.

Between ’68 to ’71, The Stooges released two albums, their self-titled debut in 1969 and 1970’s “Fun House”. Hailed as two of the great rock albums of all time now, at the time they were all but ignored, not selling anywhere near as much as most hoped they would. That, combined with the crippling heroin habit that Iggy had picked up, led to The Stooges splitting soon after “Fun House” was released. However, in the same year Iggy made one of the contacts that would save his career when he met David Bowie at the nightclub Max’s Kansas City.

Bowie wanted to make an album with Iggy in England, so he and new guitarist James Williamson moved across the Atlantic to put a new band together. England promptly failed to deliver, so Scott and Ron Asheton begrudgingly moved across the pond to complete the group on bass and drums respectively. The album they created, “Raw Power”, was even better than anything they’d done before but even the patronage of Bowie himself couldn’t lift their commercial spirits and Iggy’s drug addiction worsened. The Stooges split once more, and Iggy found himself in a mental institution to wean himself off drugs, but from this point, it could only get better.

His friendship with Bowie continued and The Dame’s faith in Iggy led to the first commercially succesful albums of Iggy’s career, both released in 1977. They were “The Idiot” and “Lust For Life”. Ever since then Iggy has remained one of the most respected and acclaimed cult performers in rock and roll, a reputation which he continues to hold to this very day. Still performing, still rocking and still blowing every mind who witnesses him, Iggy Pop comes highly recommended.

Live reviews

Last night (4-11-16) at The Boston Orpheum Iggy Pop finally has transcended himself.

Most musicians at this stage in their careers (if they survived) unfortunately have become a mere shadow of themselves and in some cases a straight out mockery.

That is not the case with Iggy Pop!

I must admit that when the Band came out in red lounge lizard smoking jackets and black slacks I was a bit nervous as to what the evening was to unfold?

And when Iggy himself hobbled out in a black Tux, bare chested though He was under the jacket, I was getting more worried.

"Please not some watered down post punk slop"!!

Two verses into the opening "Lust For Life" my concerns were gone along with Iggy's Jacket!!

At 69 years old, and a very hard 69 years that by all accounts He never should have made it to. His body is undeniably "broken" and He obviously has issues moving at times He none the less stalks the stage like a caged animal and will inexplicably explode with a frenzy for a moment as what ever demons are within him take over.

Josh Homme has put together a remarkable live Band for Iggy to wail over and there were just enough of his signature style to add a nice twist to Iggy's old standards.

But I must admit that the biggest surprise was how much new material they did (I think the whole record) and how bombastic it is live compared to the Studio album which, as is typical, tempered the raw energy of the tracks IMO.

"American Valhalla" in particular was a completely different animal all together!! No longer a prodding show gazer track but a snarling angry tirade!

Iggy doesn't fake anything and He is the real deal to the bitter end (and I think this is the end). Nothing is forced or contrived and when a 69 year old with a bad hip launches himself into the audience to crowd surface and just has the biggest goofy smile on his face the whole time you just have to go with it!!

Iggy is like that Old Lion with all the scars of life on full display with out self consciousness almost ready to walk off into the sunset.

But though He may not be as fast as He once was and there is a paunch in his once lean stomach. When you look in those eyes you still see that fire and those fangs are still there waiting for someone to be stupid enough to try and pat his head and say "Good Kitty".

Many rock artists reach a point in their career where they consider the logistics of whether or not they can match the raw energetic performances they have given in the past. Often you find musicians settling into more subdued genres ( for instance Deep Purple's guitarist Richie Blackmore chose Celtic Folk). This simply isn't the case for Iggy Pop. Sure he's released albums that have drifted from his punk background. Remember Préliminaires? This was an album steeped in the rich New Orleans traditions of jazz, finding Iggy singing standards like "Autumn Leaves" in French. This trend continued on his 2012 album Après finding him singing a wide variety of pop hits many times in the French language.

Ok. Right now it sounds like I am contradicting myself. Iggy Pop is an incredibly prolific artist and these albums are really a testament to his diverse and experimental career. However after hearing The Stooges album "Ready to Die" and seeing some of the groups performances it seems like Iggy Pop took it upon himself to exponentially crank up the volume and rage with each year he's been performing. Some of his performances are so erratic and in your face that Black Flag would cringe. Going to one of his shows it is very possible that you might be consumed by a storming crowd with a shirtless Iggy jumping right in the middle of the chaos.

Obviously you shouldn't expect all of Iggy's shows to be equivocal to gang fights, although it might seem like that depending on the tour or songs he chooses. Iggy's career is flavored with variety, and similar to like minded artist and frequent collaborator David Bowie his music is multilayered and in constant flux. Iggy is likely to blast you out with his psychedelic tinged-punk classic "I Wanna Be Your Dog" or he may decide to serenade you with his Dylanesque "Passenger". You just might even want to bring your dancing shoes for his more catchy tracks such as "Night Clubbing" and "China Girl".

The influential frontman of protopunk band The Stooges continues to tour to this date to his loyal fanbase. Perhaps now equally famous for remaining topless during almost all of his public appearances, the icon of rock still has mass appeal and is one of the century's most naturally gifted frontmen.

There is no denying that his vocal is wavering with age not helped by Iggy's fragmented past yet the crowd are more than happy to help out as they bellow along the chorus to 'Gimme Danger'. Iggy continues to perform with the snarling demeanour that fans became accustomed to during his rise to fame in the 70's and they respond well to jeers to move and be heard.

They do not need any encouragement during 'Real Wild Child (Wild One' which they chant back with fists raised to the stage as a sort of punk call to arms. The final track 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' is the most chaotic as Iggy launches himself from side to side of stage and makes sure he is still seen as an epitome of classic rock & roll.

An Iggy Pop concert is a once in a lifetime experience, perhaps because, seated in an arena of thousands, you can only be too aware that you are in the presence of a legend. An icon in rock history. The Michigan born rock singer, songwriter and producer has been performing for decades now, and has well and truly cemented himself in musical history, first as frontman of The Stooges and then as a solo artist in his own right. Through Iggy Pop’s varied and impressive career, he has never once lost the iconic energy and passion that first enabled his rise to stardom. He is a fireball on stage, as punk god glorious as ever, and entertains the crowd with as much gusto as ever. He performed all his greatest hits, for which the crowd went wild, as well as a number of his pop hits and even a French number. Iggy’s vocals may be aged, but this barely mattered as the crowd sang with such enthusiasm throughout that most of his vocals were blasted by the brilliant, crazy crowd.

Had an amazing experience seeing Iggy Pop perform with Joshua Homme and crew. Dean Fertita, Troy Van Leeuwan played guitars, keys, and backup vocals. Matt Helders from Arctic Monkeys on drums. I'm not sure who the bass player was but he played well also.

They hit every song from Post Pop Depression album except for Vulture. There was also quite a few other songs played that I was unfamiliar with but they were great!

Even at 68 Iggy was stage diving, trusting those in the front row to catch him. He climbed down into the crowd for one of the songs which was pretty cool.

Wasn't a whole lot of talking, Iggy and crew kept the music going and there was hardly any down time during their set.

If this tour is coming to a city near you I highly recommend going to see it.

I enjoyed his real performance.

But Iggy looked so exhausted and tired due to the 3 stages in a row and the rare heat in the UK.

He must cut the show and it was too short not to play"No Fun" etc. "Jean Genie " become the last song.

I went to the UK in order to experience the real Iggy,

and he gave me power and notified the important things how to live and survive in this confused world.

Thank you and See you again. Iggy very soon !

Superb show! Comprising entirely of the new post-pop depression songs interlaced with songs from two Bowie-produced albums, 'The Idiot' and 'Lust For Life', almost in tribute to his great friend. Iggy enacted out everyone's inner fantasy, hurling himself into the crowd, creating mayhem by visting the entire downstairs floor and sound desk, and together with the band, generally performing these songs brilliantly. An incredible night.

He was super awesome (Iggy), full of energy giving is best to everybody who went...

I cant say anything negative about last night performance... The band, (queens of the stone age) the red coat, the list of the songs, the Jacuzzy Boys, all the production was very nice.

Thank you Iggy Pop!!!

Unbelievable. The energy was incredible and it was a pleasure to be a part of. He may be knocking on bit this didn't stop Iggy getting involved in several stage dives aswell as spending a good 10 minutes out in the crowd just getting involved.

Iggy Pop & The Losers at Hollywood Palladium

Iggy Pop, whose real name is James Newell Osterberg Jr., is a highly-regarded and notorious punk rock musician. He was a member of the proto-punk band, The Stooges. Pop’s music has been known to evolve and has contained influences from various genres, such as punk, hard rock, heavy metal, new wave, art rock, and jazz. Some of his more well-known hits include “Real Wild Child (Wild One),” “Lust for Life,” and “Passengers.” In 1990, Iggy Pop released his most famous hit, “Candy,” a duet with B52’s singer, Kate Pierson. Meanwhile, Pop’s song “China Girl” rose in popularity after being covered by David Bowie in his 1983 album, Let’s Dance.

Iggy Pop may have enjoyed minimal mainstream success, but he remains a cult icon and holds a significant place in influencing the next generation of punk and rock bands. His debut album, The Idiot, marked his first departure from The Stooges. The critically acclaimed album spawned the iconic hits “Candy” and “Sister Midnight.” The 1977 album was cited by several renowned musicians as a major influence by Depeche Mode, Joy Division, and Nine Inch Nails.

As a cultural icon, Iggy Pop may not have earned many mainstream accolades apart from a couple of Grammy nominations. However, in 2020, he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for contributing to music and influencing the next generation of artists.

This 2023, Iggy Pop is set to release his 19th studio album, Every Loser. The album, produced by Andrew Watt, features performances from Duff McKagan, Chad Smith, Jane Addiction’s Dave Navarro, Foo Fighter’s Taylor Hawkins, and more. The album was preceded by singles “Frenzy” and “Strung Out Johnny.”

Concert Review: Iggy Pop & The Losers | Las Vegas, April 29, 2023

The punk icon & his all-star band destroy Sin City with a monumental performance.

L AS VEGAS — “Wise people say that this life is a dream,” Iggy Pop reflects in his unmistakable signature baritone, pausing mid-song to survey the worshipful fans at his feet in The Palms ’ Pearl Theatre . “This is no fucking dream. This is all we’ve got. This is fucking IT, baby. And I need you.

“Oh yes, I need you,” he stresses, pointing at the crowd as his ironically named band of Losers chug away behind him. “And I want you. I want you. I wanna fucking get inside you. And you. And you. And you. And you. So here I go … ”

Pop eases into the last verse of The Stooges ’ classic I Wanna Be Your Dog and the musicians follow his lead, slowly cranking the song up to a thundering finale. The audience erupts. The tipsy guy next to me — who has both hands clamped to the sides of his head as if it might explode with amazement and joy — turns and grabs me in a combination bro hug / handshake. “Man, I’m so glad I got to see this with you,” he says, even though we met less than two hours ago and don’t know each other’s names. “This has been incredible.”

To put it another way: Life is no fucking dream. But this night? A fucking dream come true.

•          •          •

“I ggy Pop ?!” responds the casino doorman with a mix of shock and awe after asking how I’m spending my Sin City Saturday night. “He’s still around? Wow. I had no idea.”

He’s not alone. Despite being the godfather of punk, Pop remains the world’s forgotten boy in Vegas. While massive animated billboards for Adele , Rod , Usher , Miranda , Donny , 50 Cent , Wiz Khalifa , Elle King , Keith Urban , Weezer and more blanket the neon-soaked Strip , Iggy’s craggy mug is nowhere to be found. In fact, aside from one poster in the Palms itself, the only hoopla I can find about Pop’s local stop is a two-page spread in a tourist rag. And it’s basically boilerplate and background — no interview, no quotes, not much to explain how historic this show truly is.

iggy pop on tour

Allow me to explain. It’s simple, really: Iggy is fucking back. Not that he went away. Not totally, anyway. But he’s been kinda quiet for the past two decades. Aside from 2016’s Josh Homme -helmed Post-Pop Depression , he hasn’t made a solo rock disc since 2003’s Skull Ring . Instead, he’s crooned jazz standards, adapted French novels into concept albums, recited poetry like Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night over ambient soundscapes. He even gave up stage-diving. And who can blame him? He just turned 70-goddamn-6, fer chrissake. In his own words, he’s “rickety.” He sometimes uses a cane. His taut torso once resembled a Greek god; now he’s like a troll doll that’s been microwaved. Bottom line: He’s an elder statesman of rock. And he’s been acting like one.

iggy pop on tour

Naturally, many of them have been happy to reprise their roles onstage for a handful of shows. McKagan and Smith are the rhythm section. Watt and Kills guitarist Jamie Hince handle the fretwork. There’s also a keyboard player I don’t recognize. With respect to Homme, this is Pop’s best band since The Stooges . Word is this slate of five West Coast shows — Vegas is the last stop — might be their only gigs.

Either way, it’s the sort of lineup that makes you feel you won the lotto. I suspect that goes for the players as well. After all, these guys grew up on Iggy. They probably played these songs in basements and garages. To do them with the man himself must be like carving your initials in Mount Rushmore after decades of climbing. Sure, most folks will never know you did it. But you’ll know. As will people who care. That includes people like Gogol Bordello singer Eugene Hütz , who I met at the Punk Rock Museum the day before. “Iggy is a tremendous influence on everyone in here,” he told me. “I don’t think anybody would be doing anything onstage if it weren’t for him.” It’s a bit of a stretch. But only a bit.

iggy pop on tour

Hütz ’s point is not lost on the 2,000 fans of all ages and stripes in The Pearl , many of whom queued up in a massive, snaking line for shirts (I left with two) and posters (signed ones go for $150). And it’s not lost on the punk bassist-turned-painter (walls, not canvases) beside me. It’s his first Iggy show. He’s naturally excited — and impressed that I flew in for this. I tell him I wouldn’t have missed it, and that he’s in for a treat. Hell, we all are.

T hings get rolling around 9 p.m., after a half-decent but unnecessary set by Grace McKagan (yes, Duff’s daughter) and The Nepo Babies (not really their name, but it should be). When the lights dim, Grace’s dad and his cohorts take the stage and lay down a slowly shuffling blues vamp. Iggy saunters in from the wings reciting The News For Andy , an Every Loser interlude inspired by Warhol’s suggestion back in the ’70s that Iggy just read the newspaper out loud over his songs. (When Pop hits the line: “Have you been injured in an auto accident? Get cash!” it reminds me of a joke billboard outside my hotel: “Been injured searching for dead bodies in Lake Mead? Demand compensation!” Only in Vegas.)

While fans are still finding their feet, the band launch straight into the one-two punch of Neo Punk and Frenzy , a pair of Only Loser standouts. Iggy still sounds great, though his voice is rougher and more ragged around the edges these days. As he delivers the goods, McKagan strides about in a black leather vest adorned with the Heartbreakers ’ L.A.M.F. logo in pink on the right breast. Hince slides and glides across the stage in white shoes, jiving like James Brown . Watt is a whirling dervish, sprinting back and forth, striking guitar-god poses and peeling off blistering solos. Smith is a monster behind the kit, forsaking the funkiness and finesse of his day job for relentless pounding and propulsion, lobbing drumsticks into the crowd every few bars. (By the end of the show, he’s flung what seems like half a lumber yard into the audience.) On their own, they would be a must-see band. But of course, they’re all here for the same reason we are: To celebrate the one and only Ig.

The man of the hour does not disappoint. Shirtless as always, his melted-candle body on unabashed display, Pop commands the stage with effortless swagger, despite his advancing age and lurching gait (Iggy’s right leg is shorter than his left, the result of scoliosis, a teenage football mishap or some combo of the two, depending on which story you believe). But even if he’s not as limber as he once was, he’s still one of rock’s most compelling frontmen, flinging and flailing himself about as he eggs everyone on with demands of “Come on, baby, come on!” and “Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!” McKagan’s daughter heeds his call, dancing in the stage-right wings with a gaggle of women.

iggy pop on tour

Iggy and co. reward them (and us) by taking it up another notch with the stone-cold ’70s classics Raw Power and T.V. Eye . The former barrels like a freight train, topped with its iconic one-finger piano line; the latter slams and pounds, with Smith hammering down the beat. The band sound like they’ve been together for years, not weeks, stretching out the arrangement so Iggy can roam the stage, dance and interact with fans.

After the mellower Sixteen , a comparative deep cut rom Lust For Life , Iggy pauses (or lets us pause) for breath. “Hey, fucking thanks for showing up!” he enthuses. “I see you back there … We’re filming and taping tonight. So if you want a little immortality, you could jump off the balcony, you could bum-rush the stage, you could strip, you could stage-dive and be wild.” Over the course of the 85-minute set, a few fans take him up on his offer, mounting the stage to dance or dive. But the only true immortal here is Iggy. Marvelling at Pop’s youthful energy, my seatmate and new bestie informs me, “My grandfather was 72 when he died, and he looked like an old man.” To be fair, so does Iggy. But somehow, he’s also ageless, ephemeral, constantly on the move and in the moment. He can’t stop the clock or defeat gravity, but he refuses to surrender to the forces of nature and the laws of physics. He will not go gently.

Following solid renditions of Every Loser ’s Strung Out Johnny and the shuffling classic The Passenger — with the crowd belting out the “La, la, la la” refrain en masse as Iggy approvingly nods, “That’s beautiful” — comes the mission statement / Trainspotting anthem / cruise-line jingle / signature song Lust For Life . Smith kicks it off about 10 bpms slower than normal, but it still packs a mighty punch. As does the Raw Power gem Gimme Danger , which builds from an ominous darkly jangling rocker into a blazing showpiece for Watt.

As the set list enters double digits, Iggy and co. lock in and keep the momentum going, alternating newer fare like Modern Day Rip Off and the sell-out ode Comments with vintage treats like the sleazy Loose and the Berlin-era drug dirge Nightclubbing . “Well, here we are,” Iggy proclaims of the latter, “in the perfect fucking town for this song. So let’s take some hard stuff and leave ourselves behind.”

iggy pop on tour

But what goes down has got to come up — and Pop, never one for half-measures, takes it all the way to the top. “I’ve only got one fucking thing left,” he announces. “One thing left to say to you … gonna get you! Search and fucking destroy!” And so they do, with the keyboardist and Hince departing so Watt, Smith and McKagan can rip through Iggy’s nihilistic classic as a power trio. As the guitarist wails at the song’s end, Iggy casually tosses his mic over his shoulder and lumbers around waving farewell. His unbuttoned pants start to fall. He turns to face Smith, unconcernedly mooning us — apparently Iggy is going commando tonight — then spins around to give us the half-Monty. While his bandmates leave, he basks at center stage, beating his chest and whipping up the crowd before sauntering off, his ass hanging in the wind. It is the perfect ending — except he isn’t done yet.

iggy pop on tour

“I hate waiting for shit myself so I’m not gonna make you wait,” Pop cracks as he returns a minute later for the encore. “This is not fucking Coldplay .” Well, not unless fucking Coldplay decided to play a gorgeous left-field cover of Lou Reed ’s Take A Walk On The Wild Side . Iggy takes a knee to croon — joined by the audience, of course — while Grace McKagan flies in to help out on the “Do-doo-do” refrain, giving Dad a hug before leaving. The song turns into another band showpiece, evolving into a double-time groove-rocker. “We’re gonna walk a little bit,” Iggy offers on the stroll. “We’re not gonna fucking walk on the golf course. We’re not gonna walk in any bourgeois places. We’re not even gonna walk in fucking reality … We’re going to the wild side, baby!” He continues improvising with a final verse: “Playing for you has been a lot of fun / We’ve done the very best we could have done / But now we’re gonna sing a song / About a very special dog…”

Seconds later, Pop drops back to his knees, barking and begging as The Losers unfurl the clanging opening chords of I Wanna Be Your Dog . The energy peaks as a bellowing Iggy plays call-and-response with the crowd on the verses. He lays on his back, clawing at the air like a pup seeking a belly rub as Watt stands over him soloing. Eventually, he rises and hoists the mic stand to his crotch before motioning the band to take it down so he can deliver the dreamy monologue up above that sends my new pal over the top — and before launching into the set-closing garage-rocker Louie Louie (“I gotta go now!”). One last fan leaps onstage to dance while Iggy approvingly watches, rewarding her with a fist-bump, a smile and a hug before ushering her back to the pit. As the song slams home, Smith kicks over his drum kit, scattering pieces hither and yon, walking off with middle fingers hoisted. Iggy laughs and applauds, takes his final bows and hikes into the wings, going gently into that good night. For now.

Iggy Pop

Iggy Pop: “I assumed things would quiet down once I turned 65. That hasn’t been the case”

On his upcoming album ‘Every Loser’, the Godfather of Punk comes back swinging with the same primitive energy he used to change music forever

N ot many songwriters can confidently launch into an album by lashing out the lyrics: “ Got a dick and two balls, that’s more than you all / my mind’ll be sick if I suffer the pricks ”. Even fewer could shout each word like they mean it. Lucky for us, there’s Iggy Pop .

‘Frenzy’, the inciting track to Jim Osterberg’s 19th solo studio album, ‘Every Loser’, sounds exactly like what you’d expect from the man who popularised the stage dive. It’s riotous, unapologetically aggressive, and so packed with distorted guitars and rapid drumming that it’s difficult to hear where the now 75-year-old musician begins, and the feral 20-year-old who fronted primal rock pioneers The Stooges ends.

“‘Frenzy’ was the first single because it struck the cattle prod in our joy button whenever we heard it,” Iggy tells NME , his baritone register droning cheerfully on the other side of the line from his home in Miami. “We needed to step on the gas harder and when I listened to it, it felt like when someone’s in the room you’ve got the hots for, but you’re not ready to deal with it yet. I eyed that one in the corner for a month before I approached it.”

Iggy Pop on the cover of NME

The track sees Pop howling, “ shut up and love me/ cause fun is my buddy ”, before hurling expletives at an unnamed “stoned douchebag”. It’s a hysterical, biting warning of the rest of the album’s energy. “It’s based on a bit of personal experience and a little bit of how visibly nuts I am,” he laughs. “Let’s put it that way.”

‘Every Loser’ marks Pop’s first release on Atlantic’s partnership with Gold Tooth Records, the label founded by producer Andrew Watt, an avid Stooges fan and award-winning mastermind behind releases from Ozzy Osbourne , Miley Cyrus and Post Malone .

The album follows 2019’s meditative and jazz-infused ‘Free’, which Pop describes in the liner notes as a “recoil from guitar riffs in favour of guitar scapes”. Before that, he waded back into the sounds that launched his solo career with the critically-acclaimed ‘Post Pop Depression’ in 2016. Years earlier, he shared ‘Après’, a melodic compilation of covers largely sung in French. But now, after taking trips into multiple sonic territories, Pop’s ready to return to the raw and raucous sound that not only launched his career but countless others.

“Taylor Hawkins drums up a storm [on ‘Every Loser’]. I’m very fortunate to have that colour on the record.”

Watt first collided with Pop while working on a yet-to-be-released project for the former frontman of The Smiths . “I was a guest detail on a Morrissey track he produced,” Pop says. “When Morrisey wrote to me about it, he said, ‘The producer on this is extraordinary,’ and he really was.” Following the feature, Watt asked Pop if he could “knock up some tracks” for him. Pop obliged, thanks in part to the producer’s “fine ear” and his “ability to play and sing with exceptional timing, pitch and tonality.”

Watt tapped multiple rock icons for ‘Every Loser’, rounding out the album’s rhythm section with drummer Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers and bassist Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses . “It was all guys I’d known when they were starting their careers,” Pop says. “They were young enough to be my kids or knew me when they were kids. That was the core band, Chad, [Watt] and Duff, and other people came in and punctuated it.”

It’s an all-star rock’n’roll lineup: Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker , Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard, former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and Jane’s Addiction’s Dave Navarro and Eric Avery all feature. The late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins contributed to the album too.

“Everybody who worked on ‘Every Loser’ was my style in general, a stripped-down simplified style. You’re not trying to do a Burt Bacharach song,” he jokes. “You’re not trying to do a Demi Lovato track, you know? Even though that’s fine. It’s just simplicity and simplicity is never out of style.”

Recording his latest album was not only an opportunity to work with musicians Pop had run-ins with in the past, but some he’d been admiring from afar. His relationship with Avery began at seedy semi-legal Los Angeles club Scream in the ‘80s, where he recalls Jane’s hanging out and devising future plans long before they had a record deal. Pop looks back fondly on taking the band out on their first tour in 1988, saying they “killed me every night”, before doubling down on his love for the “certain way” Avery plays.

He continues: “With Travis, I heard his group [Blink 182] and sort of scratched my head for a while,” he says. “Then I realised, ‘Oh gee, the drummer, holy shit.’” Barker lends his caustic beating to ‘Neo Punk’, a track Pop describes as “fast, strange, weird and furious.” He recalls the drummer asking, “What’s your favourite punk band?” and the pair listening to psychedelic rockers Lovely Eggs and self-proclaimed “vegan queer punks” Joe & The Shitboys before laying down track.

“These guys aren’t mouthy or anything,” Iggy says of the players on ‘Every Loser’. “They’re musicians. I’m kind of like a groupie,” he cackles. “I like hanging out with musicians, they’re just a certain kind of guy I’m comfortable around.”

“I’m not gonna go out and tweet an insult to my enemies. It’s just not me.”

Hawkins – who died while on tour in Bogotá, Colombia in March – plays drums on two album tracks, the sinister yet sparkling ‘Comments’ and straggling metallic album closer, ‘The Regency’. “Taylor came in with incredible style,” Iggy says, his voice taking on a gentle drawl.

“I’m very fortunate to have that colour on the record. I was really sad and shocked to hear about him. I happened to know that hotel where he was. I’ve stayed in that town. The whole thing was something else. He did have a wonderful career doing what he wanted to do, and by all accounts, a good life.”

“He drums up a storm on those tracks, and you can really hear it,” Iggy says, his voice balancing back into a shimmering tone. “He has this sort of bubbling quality, it’s really percolating.”

E ven if Iggy has spent, in his own words, half a century “ suffering the pricks ”, it’s never appeared that he’s cared much about their validation. He spent decades creating what resonated with him, taking on his career with the same passion and humour behind the shock and awe stage antics that pushed him into the limelight in the first place. But, as ‘Every Loser’ proves, even though his music has always been marked with the drive and levity of a perpetual underdog, his experience hasn’t always been light.

Tying together the album’s 11 tracks, including two spoken word intermissions – the faux commercial shilling, ‘The News For Andy’ and ‘My Animus Interlude’, which features Iggy saying he’s no “strawboy” but a “terror” – Iggy comments, albeit in a cheeky and sardonic fashion, on fame, the industry, “goddamn dicks” and “fucking pricks”. But is it all parody, or was he experiencing a certain amount of righteous anger while writing it? “Yeah. Sorry,” Iggy says, cracking into laughter.

“One thing that comes with the particular game I’m involved in to make a living, depending on your position and phase of life, you get a lot of aggro from other places,” he says. “I’m not a celebrity culture person. I’m not gonna go out and tweet an insult to my enemies. It’s just not me. I had a lot of stuff saved up, if you will. A few things were pushing my buttons, and I just said it, it popped out.”

Iggy Pop

‘Every Loser’ also delves into how punk has leaked into the greater pop culture subconscious since artists like Iggy incited the genre half a century ago. In ‘Neo Punk’, Pop rattles off the lines, “ I don’t have to sing, I’ve got publishing/ I’m a neo punk ” and “ my hair is blue and my prescription too / I never have enough to do. ”

‘“With ‘Neo Punk’, I wanted to create this composite unlikely character who looks around like ‘Whoa, I’ve got purple hair, a chain, $10 million in the bank, an income stream, a hot car, and everybody loves me — this punk shit is great!’”

“There’s a little ‘Gucci Gang’ in there,” he adds, referencing the repetitive Lil Pump track he previously lauded to NME in 2019 . At the time he said the rapper had taken “what, a minute to write it?” before adding that Pump had gone “straight to the hook, and did the hook have a melody? No.”

Today he adds: “There’s also a bit of the punkier people who’ve made serious fortunes. Even Justin Bieber gets punk points for egging his neighbour’s house a few years ago,” he laughs, referencing the Canadian’s 2014 controversy . “That’s not something teenage heartthrobs used to do.”

“Måneskin are a really strong band. You can tell they had to fight other groups for good positions”

The character composite is a far cry from Iggy’s upbringing in the scene. When The Stooges first came together in 1967, their home base was a vacant burnt-out house outside of Detroit, Michigan. The Pop-led group of misfits lived communally, sharing everything, including money. They were more interested in making brash music, putting on prolific and provocative shows, and ingesting a questionable amount of drugs instead than any of the glamour (and revenue) that came with stardom.

“When I started out, I didn’t know what publishing was,” Iggy says. “I didn’t understand you were paid money on the basis of intellectual property. Nobody told me, and I didn’t ask. When I was doing the first Stooges album, I thought that writing credits were just about glory. Now, these guys have lawyers, realtors, investment advisors, you name it.”

Punk and nostalgia’s chokehold on current culture seems to be grasping even tighter as of late. Recent music festival lineups, like Los Angeles’ Just Like Heaven and Las Vegas’ When We Were Young have rolled out sold-out events featuring post-punk and pop versions of the sound, headlined by artists like Interpol and My Chemical Romance . It’s now even made its way from the club stage to the runway.

“It’s huge in the fashion industry,” Iggy says. “I mean, my god, Tiffany’s doing dog collars,” he says, acknowledging the trend he put into orbit in the ‘70s when his go-to performance fit was wearing the canine accessory around his neck shirtless while accenting his arms in cheap silver lamé gloves.

Not that Iggy shies away from all commercial plugs. He’s taken part in Gucci campaigns, lending his svelte aesthetic to the brand’s bright tailored suits. There was also his appearance in Swiftcover insurance ads in the ‘00s, which were called “misleading” by the Advertising Standards Authority and “embarrassing” by Pop. Ouch.

Despite the downsides, however, it seems to be his winning formula. When asked what advice he’d offer to up-and-coming punks seeking longevity in their careers, he answers succinctly: “do two for yourself and one for the man.”

Last year, Iggy joined forces with Italian rock provocateurs Måneskin , lending his well-worn vocals to a new version of their sexed-up track, ‘I Wanna Be Your Slave’. “That’s a really strong band,” Iggy says of the four-piece who’ve often cited him as their inspiration for starting a band. “Damiano [David] is an amazing singer and the bass player, Victoria [de Angelis] really handles that position well and doesn’t overplay, but on stage and in their videos, she really stays with the message. Wooo, she’s a firecracker.”

“The Stooges records were inappropriately mastered. They sounded wimpy, but digital streaming and CDs has fixed that”

He likens their guitarist, Thomas Raggi’s smooth and powerful playing to “somewhere north of Joe Perry” and calls their drummer, Ethan Torchio, “clever”, pointing to the way he plays rock with an ear for dance music.

“I read an interview that said they started out busking on the street in Rome and had to fight other groups for good positions,” he says. “You can tell they have that background, that they’ve done something together where they got a little taste of poverty and obscurity, and I think that gives them a really nice edge.”

With his influence present in everything from designer jewellery to the music of up-and-coming acts, is he able to wrap his mind around his level of impact? “No, I’m not fully aware,” he responds. “I suppose if I was another person, I could sit down and graph all that out and come up with some sort of a schematic plan to capitalise a little bit more, but I’m not. I have noticed life has become a little easier and more rewarding in certain areas than it used to be and seems to continue that way, which really surprises me. Mostly I’m grateful there are people who’ve listened to the music and enjoy it.”

Iggy Pop

I n March 2016, Pop released ‘Post Pop Depression’, a career highlight, and his first record to reach the Top 20 on the US Album charts in the United States. Co-written and produced by Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age and featuring Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders and LA multi-instrumentalist Dean Fertita, the album went on to receive a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.

Pop’s first commercial success came at an eerie time, five long decades after The Stooges released their self-titled debut and a short three months after his close friend and collaborator David Bowie had passed, aged 69. Iggy’s Bowie-produced seminal proto-punk albums in ‘70s, ‘Lust For Life’ and ‘The Idiot’, heavily inspired ‘Post Pop Depression’, with much of the album mirroring the production and arrangements of Pop’s first solo debuts.

“Some really prosaic things lent themselves to that,” he says of the tide turning for his work. “Society and music in general went in a direction that made it easier for people to realise the virtues of the music I’m involved in,” he says, pointing to the popularity of hip-hop’s simple riffs and recent technological advances.

“The original Stooges [records], they were all inappropriately mastered. They sounded wimpier than they really were. Then later, as CDs came in and then, especially in the digital age with streaming, suddenly the same records sound the way they should have.”

The global embrace of punk has also led to Iggy proving naysayers wrong. “I was finally able to solve the old problem of hearing, ‘Well your record is still in the red and you didn’t sell’” he says, in a mocking tone. “They’ve all turned over now, the 25 studio albums between The Stooges and my solo work. The company made money, I get a royalty, so everybody can shut the fuck up and leave me alone,” he laughs.

“I won’t stage-dive again… I’m too rickety for that now.”

The Godfather of Punk’s latest offering takes its name from a line in ‘Comments’, a song about vapid fame and Iggy’s run-ins with bold online trolls. “When I read these comments, especially the brutal ones, it’ll be some guy with a macho name like @superdudemuscledestroyer, he’ll write something like, ‘Iggy you little wimp, this sucks’”, he mimics in a squeaky voice before bursting into laughter. “I do think about the pleasure this person gets out of it. Andrew spotted the line, “ Every loser needs a bit of joy ”, and suggested it as the title. I didn’t think I could carry that ball, but ‘Every Loser’? It’s nice ’cause it’s inclusive.”

‘Every Loser’ has few subdued moments, like the slow-burning ‘Morning Show’, which hits on Iggy’s “disappointed areas where I don’t feel 100 per cent wunderbar”. There’s also the poetic ‘Atlantis’, a tribute to the miscreants and sinking land of the “shitty, shady, paradise” Pop calls home. Even with those fleeting serenades in tow, the album is begging to be played loud and live. “That’s what I like about it,” Iggy says

Next summer, Pop is set to play at London’s Crystal Palace Park, the event, dubbed ‘Dog Day Afternoon’, will feature sets from Blondie and Generation Sex, but don’t expect any stage dives. “I’ve left the proscenium a few times if the crowds were too dull just to whip ’em up, but mostly I didn’t have to,” he says. “I won’t do the dives again, I’ve managed to survive it mostly and I’m too rickety for that now.”

Surviving is a central thread in Iggy’s life, being that he’s one of the last original punks standing, long after many of his contemporaries have departed. Still, ‘Every Loser’ is no swan song but a scrappy underdog’s victory lap. Despite what the album title may allude to, Pop’s a punk rock winner who’s still up for the fight.

“It really surprises me. I always assumed there would be an arc and things would quiet down after I hit 65,” he says. “That hasn’t been the case.”

Iggy Pop’s ‘Every Loser’ is released January 6, 2023 on Gold Tooth Records

Miss the days when Goldenvoice was a scrappy punk promoter booking shows with the funds from founder Gary Tovar’s weed dealing? No Values hits right in your safety-pinned sweet spot.

This weekend’s classic punk fest at the Pomona Fairplex is the latest smaller, genre-themed outing from the Coachella promoter. It harkens back to its very early incarnation with acts like the Misfits and Social Distortion atop the bill, and the day is packed with ageless legends (Iggy Pop) and SoCal fixtures (Bad Religion, a Coachella-reunited Sublime, the Vandals), along with a swath of modern inheritors (Turnstile, Ceremony).

Here are five of the best acts worth seeing as you sweat through your long-retired battle jacket.

The metal world lost one of its most exciting frontmen when Power Trip’s Riley Gale died in 2020. Power Trip, beloved for its mix of Texas thrash and hardcore pummel, was well on its way to becoming a festival-caliber headliner. After Gale’s death, the band earned a Grammy nomination for metal performance but was uncertain how they’d continue. Now fans have their answer, at least for now. This year, the surviving quartet will perform a run of shows with a longtime friend of the band, Seth Gilmore, on vocals. No Values will be the first chance SoCal fans have to see them since Gale’s death, and given how their legend has only grown in the interim, it will hopefully be the start of a new era for one of heavy music’s best bands.

Any fan of punk and adjacent genres has seen tragedy strike a favorite act. But few in the classic ska world were prepared for Hepcat’s singer Greg Lee to die of a brain aneurysm and cardiac arrest at the terribly young age of 53 on March 19. Lee, who co-founded the band in the late ’80s, released six albums with Hepcat that informed the SoCal ska wave of ’90s acts like No Doubt and Sublime. The band were standouts for their velvet-smooth harmonies and jubilant choreography. They were booked for No Values before Lee’s death, and this short set will be a bittersweet tribute to one of the scene’s most universally beloved singers.

The Jesus Lizard

The late, great Steve Albini was best known for producing Nirvana’s “In Utero,” but might be best embodied on his work with the Jesus Lizard. David Yow’s scabrous post-hardcore band took Albini’s legacy of honest, blistering noise and made some of the best rock records of the ’90s like “Liar” and “Goat.” They’ve toured intermittently in the decades since, but now 26 years after their last LP, they’ve finally returned with a new album, “Rack,” that’s every bit as squalling and churning as the rest of their catalog.

Quick, name the first punk band. The Sex Pistols? The Ramones? Wrong! The Stooges? MC5? Allowed, but debatable. The real, undisputed answer is The Damned, the UK combo whose 1976 single “New Rose” is generally regarded as the first true punk record, beating “Anarchy in the U.K.” to the punch by five weeks. It still sounds incredible today, with a ferocious musicianship and songcraft and a visual aesthetic that would inspire goths for decades. Even more incredibly, the band (vocalist Dave Vanian on vocals, guitarist Paul Gray, bassist Captain Sensible and drummer Rat Scabies) is back on the road after first reuniting in 2022 for their first classic-lineup tour of the U.S. in 35 years.

Johnny Depp and Jonathan Shaw in 'Scab Vendor'

Johnny Depp , Iggy Pop and filmmaker Jim Jarmusch are among those sharing memories about tattoo artist Jonathan Shaw in the trailer for the documentary feature Scab Vendor: Confessions of a Tattoo Artist .

Dark Star Pictures releases the movie from directors Lucas de Barros and Mariana Thome in theaters June 14 before it hits VOD platforms July 30. Scab Vendor examines the life of Shaw, who opened his Fun City Tattoo studio in New York City before tattooing was even legal in Manhattan.

The 9/11 documentary you'll never see, how to perform pop music history ... in drag ... for 24 hours straight.

“My childhood was a typical American-dream nightmare,” Shaw tells the camera in the trailer. He goes on to say, “We’d hang out in Jim Morrison’s place in Laurel Canyon or Frank Zappa’s big log cabin down the road.”

At one point, Pop quips, “Here comes that Jonathan Shaw. Here comes trouble.”

Later, Depp can be seen appearing to use a tattoo gun on Shaw before the artist intervenes. “Give me that,” Shaw scolds Depp. “What the fuck are you doing?”

Depp, Pop, Jarmusch, Eugene Hutz, Joe Coleman and Kelly Cutrone are among the individuals interviewed in the film.

Scab Vendor is based on Shaw’s 2017 book of the same name. Pop and the group Gogol Bordello wrote the music for the film that counts de Barros, Mariana Thome, Enrique Aular and Christian Jurgensen as producers.

Music Review: Charli XCX’s ‘Brat’ swings between hedonism and anxiety, cult classic and pop party

The Associated Press

English pop singer-songwriter Charli XCX ‘s sixth album, “Brat,” oscillates between hedonism and anxiety — the euphoria of a late night on the dancefloor and the creeping disquietude of the morning after — as much as it does her in-between status as pop queen of the underground and sometimes mainstream success story.

The latter has arrived a few times in her career, like in her contribution to the blockbuster “Barbie” soundtrack , her feature on Iggy Azalea’s once-inescapable “Fancy,” and ditto for Icona Pop’s 2012 hit “I Love It,” which she also co-wrote. Something started to shift in 2016, around her “Vroom Vroom” EP, when Charli XCX perhaps realized pop superstardom wasn’t for her — she’s long-suffered from being a bit too cult-cool, too forthright for the A-list like her soon-to-be tourmate Troye Sivan — and began collaborating with the future-seeking, hyperpop PC Music collective, including the late, innovative Sophie (the subject of the thoughtful tribute “So I” ) and A.G. Cook, who executive produced “Brat.”

This album builds from the foundation of her previous work, of course, with its brash, bombastic synth-pop — but returns to her U.K. rave roots. Recent single “360” is the intersection of both, an ode to the internet’s outsider It-girls — a quality mirrored in the paparazzi-pop and Y2K bravado of “Von Dutch” and the hyper-referentiality of “Club Classics.” There, she name drops a cool-girl canon of musicians she’d like to dance to and with: Sophie, Cook, the DJ Hudson Mohawke and her fiancé George Daniel of English pop-rock band The 1975 .”

“Everything is Romantic” opens with gorgeous strings and woodwinds as Charli XCX’s talk-sings about falling in love before the song detours into U.K. garage . It’s a peculiarly lavish combination, a one-song case for subwoofers reaching the same kind of emotional ascendency associated with orchestral music.

But interwoven in addictive songs about seeking pleasure and status is also a kind of insecurity: “Rewind” is a club banger about poor body image, not feeling successful enough, concerning yourself with things like chart position. ( “Boom Clap” fans may want to start here, but prepare themselves for a particularly confessional Charli.) “Apple” considers familial legacy; “Girl, So Confusing,” teases a rivalry with another pop performer.

It’s all effortlessly danceable, both the moments of metaphysical frustration and chemical elation.

But the tension at the heart of “Brat” is best illustrated in the final two tracks, arguably the most gorgeous and soul-spilling of the 15-song collection. On the penultimate “I Think About It All the Time,” after 13 songs of pulsating rhythms tackling love, loss, life and career, she leaves the club to consider motherhood.

Would having a child give her a new sense of purpose? Would she become a different person?

“And a baby might be mine/‘Cause maybe one day I might/If I don’t run out of time/Would it make me miss all my freedom?,” she sings, her phrasing unraveling into a sweet hum. “Should I stop my birth control?/’Cause my career feels so small/In the existential scheme of it all.”

Spoiler alert: She doesn’t have the answers, at least, not right now. Closer “365” returns to the cheery production of opener “360″ before unraveling into something much harder. And then there she is, back on the dancefloor, drink in hand, swaying in the haze of an overactive smoke machine.
