HMT Tour: Behind the Scenes at His Majesty’s Theatre

The goddess of drama.

Is the name of a statue, that I had A. Never heard of or noticed before and B. they named a statue after me? Flattered. Everybody has a goddess of drama in their life. I swear Scott raised an eyebrow every time the tour guide spoke of her. But I like her. She gets me. Standing there at the top of the auditorium, decorated in gold leaf, owning it. I would say she has seen more shows at HMT than anyone else but she literally has the worst seat in the house. Higher than the highest balcony and facing towards the audience. Talk about a restricted view! But a restricted view is far from what we got when we spent our Saturday morning creeping around backstage on an HMT tour.

hmt theatre tour

I had always wanted to do an HMT tour and finally, when one blog led to another, we got the opportunity. This was my moment. This was my perfect moment. It was, however, not the first time yours truly had taken to the stage. And no, I am not talking about that time I rapped I like Big Butts in McNastys and Scott left the building in pure humiliation. Oh no no. I was a stage baby. The kid who took part in every dance class known to man. I was shoved through many a dancing door as a child. Pantomimes, stage shows, Highland games, school galas. If there was a stage, my mother was at the side of it telling me I was too heavy-footed. Unfortunately, that never changed. Witch.

Baby Got Back

hmt theatre tour

And now, here I was. Back on the stage, a good few stone heavier and definitely not rocking a kilt or lycra (thank God). Heavy-footed, yet light on my feet. You see, I took that heavy-footed thing to heart when I was a kid. Now I’m as heavy as a tree yet as light as it’s leaves. But standing there, looking out at an admiring audience of absolutely no humans, besides a brass cleaner on the balcony, I felt… like a panto dame. Scott was the villain, and together, that’s entertainment. But there is SO much more to HMT than just the stage.

Why His and not Hers?

hmt theatre tour

So here come a couple of obvious points that I never got. Because sometimes I just canna see the trees for the breeze. Firstly, and this one has bothered me since I moved to Aberdream, is it His Majesty’s or Her Majestys? Until this year, I confused this on a semi-permanent basis. The reason it is His Majesty’s Theatre and not Her Majesty’s is that when the theatre was built, Queen Victoria was no longer on the phone. Edward VII was on the throne. Which clears everything up…

And the second completely obvious point that wasn’t obvious enough for me, is the name of the HMT restaurant, 1906. So let’s do some maths. 26 years on the planet + 6 years in Aberdeen + 5 meals eaten in ‘1906’ equals, “wonder why this place is called 1906, that is such a random name for a restaurant.” So guess whos tiny little mind was blown when she was told it was named 1906 after the year HMT was built? Ding ding ding. Moi. FYI, the food there is everything.

Stuff you never get to see but can with an HMT tour

  • The green room. Spoiler, it isn’t green.
  • The royal box, but no royalty, unless they happen to be there when you visit. In which case, you aren’t getting in the royal box. Unless you’re royal. It isn’t even that great a view of the stage. Purely status *eye roll*.
  • The basement, which is full of horse… stories, ghosts, and stuff that makes you wonder how a show is ever pulled off successfully. Everything could go wrong.
  • The old stage, which I’m not telling you anything about. Go and see it for yourself.
  • The studio, which you can only see out with if you’re dramatically inclined.
  • HMT, when there isn’t the dull chatter of wifeys on wine and fellas grumping about being dragged to see a wifey show.
  • The audience from a panto dame perspective.
  • Lots of rooms with lots of history that you wouldn’t even know existed unless you either, performed at HMT or went on an HMT tour.
  • Backstage, costumes and prop’ery.
  • Sandra and/or Val, two charming ladies who know more about HMT than HMT knows about HMT.

His Majesty’s Theatre Behind The Scenes Tour

His Majesty’s Theatre is one of the most beautiful theatres in Scotland and an iconic part of Aberdeen City. Aberdeens theatre was built in 1906 and designed by the legendary theatre architect Frank Matcham. Learn about his signature design features, and explore the new and old sections of the city centre landmark on a behind the scenes tour, where you will be taken back in time to learn about its glorious history and be let in on some of its secrets that has been kept for over a hundred years.

You will be shown the exact location where a horrific accident took place whilst a show was performing and a former employee lost his life. Jake tragically died in 1942 when he was struck in the head by a rapidly-spinning winch handle. He was 69 when he was killed, attempting to put the brake on a lift which was transporting circus horses to the lower floor. The lift was only supposed to carry three at a time but a colleague decided to fill the lift with all six horses. Jake however lives on as HMT’s resident ghost, and is described as being rather mischievous. Jake likes to move objects when your back is turned. Keep a particular eye out for him by cold spots in the passageway nicknamed “Lambeth Walk”. Although quiet since the refurbishment in 1999, people believe Jake keeps an eye on his colleagues still to this day. Some report to hear the clip-clop of hooves too.

Ellen DeGeneres cancels multiple shows on 2024 comedy tour

Ellen DeGeneres , who's currently on her farewell tour Ellen’s Last Stand… Up, has canceled four of her upcoming shows.

The Ticketmaster pages for her tour stops in Dallas (July 10), San Francisco (July 21), Seattle (July 23) and Chicago (Aug. 11) show a message that reads: "Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel your event. You don't need to do a thing. We'll issue a refund to the original method of payment used at time of purchase, as soon as funds are received from the Event Organizer."

A previously announced show at San Antonio's Majestic Theater on July 12 also appears to have been canceled.

USA TODAY reached out to reps for DeGeneres and Live Nation for comment.

On May 29, DeGeneres announced the summer tour across North America, which is described as "the last opportunity for fans to witness a comedy legend in her final curtain call." Organizers added an extra date each in San Francisco, Seattle and Chicago, but now those cities only have one show.

Several shows in Washington, Oregon and California had previously been announced, and DeGeneres kicked off the tour in Los Angeles back in April.

According to  Rolling Stone  and  People , during her opening night, DeGeneres took the opportunity to address the elephant in the room: Her absence from the limelight in recent years.

"We were both just laying low for a while," she said of herself and her wife of 15 years,  Portia de Rossi , per the outlets.

A Community Center Piece for Generations

Built in 1921 by William Martin, HHT is one of the oldest movie theatres in the country. Much more than just an old building, the Historic Hemet Theatre has been a centerpiece of the community for generations. The stories from residents are endless: Saturday morning serial films during the Depression; a first kiss in the loge seating; a first job working for "old man Martin"; among many.

In the age before television, movies brought the world to the rural San Jacinto Valley. Through the decades, the theater served as entertainment and a gathering place for valley residents.

Students perform “We Dream” during Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe's 2022 Stage of Discovery program. The five-week summer musical theater program is free for participants

For the ninth year, aspiring actors, dancers and singers ages 8-19 are taking the stage with Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe as part of its Stage of Discovery program. The five-week summer musical theater program is free for participants and culminates with three performances of “Make Room for Me!” on July 12-14.

The students are under the direction of WBTT Artistic Director Nate Jacobs and Education Director Jim Weaver. WBTT staff and guest instructors offer lessons in dance, acting, singing and improvisation, and provide behind-the-scenes experience with set and costume design.

This year Weaver added a new component: the 26 participants were given a chance to express their vision, writing about topics such as: “You think you know me?” “My truth,” “The colors of love,” and “Believe.” Once the written pieces were submitted, Weaver selected music, featuring artists including Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, The Staple Singers, Luther Vandross, Simon & Garfunkel, and Whitney Houston.

“The addition of self-expression provides a holistic theater experience for our teen participants, helping them to express how they see the world, where they fit in, and their experiences in it thus far,” said Weaver. “To paraphrase what some of our students have said, ‘We’re young, talented, and have a lot to say – if you give us the chance!”

The Stage of Discovery program is free thanks to foundation grants and individual donations. The founding sponsor is the Robert E. Dods Family Foundation (in honor of Michael & Karen Gardiner). Other sponsors include Carol Beeler (in memory of Tom Beeler); Community Foundation of Sarasota County; Kenneth and Sarah Goldblatt; Sy Goldblatt; Gulf Coast Community Foundation; Annette Orso Rickel Foundation; Lee and Lydia Rainer, Rainer’s Grace Donor Fund; Dona and Sam Scott; and Pat Singletary.

Performances take place in The Donelly Theatre at WBTT (1012 N. Orange Ave., Sarasota) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (preview show – tickets $17); Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday at 2 p.m. (tickets $27/adults, $17/active military and students age 25 and under). Visit  westcoastblacktheatre.org  or call the Box Office at 941-366-1505.

"It is our honor and pleasure to provide our young participants with a rigorous – and fun – formal theater experience; many of these students have never had access to this level of training previously," Jacobs said. "While WBTT is dedicated to producing the finest dramatic and musical theater, my dream – my true calling and purpose for founding this organization – has always been to help young, aspiring artists who may not otherwise have the opportunity to develop their talents and achieve success."

  4. HMT Tour: Behind the Scenes at His Majesty's Theatre

The reason it is His Majesty's Theatre and not Her Majesty's is that when the theatre was built, Queen Victoria was no longer on the phone. Edward VII was on the throne. Which clears everything up…. And the second completely obvious point that wasn't obvious enough for me, is the name of the HMT restaurant, 1906.
