SAME BIG SHOW--NOW AT THE PARKER!
We’re All Doomed! Daniel Howell is back, as stressed and depressingly dressed as ever, with his epic new solo comedy stage show “We’re All Doomed!”. When there’s so many apocalyptic scenarios threatening to destroy us, it might be tempting to give into the gloom - but with enough sarcasm, satire, and a desire to skewer everything that’s wrong with society: Dan is determined to find some hope for humanity or at least laugh like it’s the end of the world (because it probably is). Prepare for a night of savage self-deprecation, soul-searching, Dan over-sharing his deepest fears and desires, and become part of a community of doomers to share the final days.

Daniel Howell is back, as stressed and depressingly dressed as ever, with his epic new solo comedy stage show “We’re All Doomed!”.
When there’s so many apocalyptic scenarios threatening to destroy us, it might be tempting to give into the gloom - but with enough sarcasm, satire, and a desire to skewer everything that’s wrong with society: Dan is determined to find some hope for humanity ..or at least laugh like it’s the end of the world (because it probably is).
Prepare for a night of savage self-deprecation, soul-searching, Dan over-sharing his deepest fears and desires, and become part of a community of doomers to share the final days.
Daniel Howell is one of the world’s most successful, stressed and depressed entertainers. Known for his savagely self-deprecating and sarcastic humour, Dan fairly skewers everything that’s wrong with the world as much as he does himself. From bestselling books, an award-winning show on BBC Radio 1, and billions of views on his celebrated online content - to sellout world tours performing high-concept comedy to over 500,000 people in 18 countries, Dan’s dedicated audience relate to his outlook on life and follow anywhere he goes.
While making jokes at his own expense, Dan has shared serious struggles with his sexuality and mental health, that have culminated in his recent special ‘Gay and Not Proud’ and #1 Bestselling book ‘You Will Get Through This Night’ - a no nonsense guide to looking after your sanity - as well as being a proud ambassador for Stonewall and Young Minds.
His epic new solo comedy stage show “We’re All Doomed!” is here to demand we honestly accept the fate of humanity with all the apocalypses threatening to consume us - and if we can’t find a reason to feel hopeful for the future, at least laugh like it’s the end of the world ..because it probably is. Touring the world (while it’s still here) in 2022, Dan will return to iconic venues such as the London Palladium, NYC’s Kings Theatre and The Ace in Los Angeles, as well as dates across Australia and Europe.
Speaking of the tour, Daniel said “We’ve got the climate, capitalism, the bloody bees doing a colony collapse and the Alexa’s are definitely going to rebel and kill us. If we can’t laugh about these things, we might as well give up ..but don’t worry I’m sure everything will be fine!”
The former BBC radio presenter has also just released a new video titled “ Why I Quit YouTube ”, two years after he uploaded his coming-out video during Pride month. In the video, he explained his journey of becoming a YouTuber (physically, emotionally, and mentally) and the fame and notoriety he’s received as an online celebrity.

Daniel Howell on coming out, returning to YouTube, and why we’re all doomed
By Louise Griffin , Senior Entertainment Reporter
Share this with
‘I don’t know whether I’m comparing myself to a bear or Jesus or which one is worse. Let’s not answer that question.’
Daniel Howell, author, performer, and all-round YouTube legend, is officially back. After two years away , ‘hibernating’, as he puts it (hence the whole bear and Jesus thing), the 30-year-old delighted fans by promising to make YouTube his home once more in his new comeback video – plus he’s going on a world tour, with his show We’re All Doomed.
So how did we get here?
In 2020, after a year away, Daniel returned to YouTube with what is now one of his most famous videos , Basically I’m Gay. In the 45-minute epic, he revealed he’d come out to his family and was now coming out, publicly, to his six million subscribers (and, by extension, kind of the whole internet).
‘I was feeling chaotic and excited, which is also how I feel a lot of the time,’ he recalled to Metro.co.uk . ‘I didn’t know whether people would be interested because I always have this thing that I like to tell myself, “Dan, nobody likes you. You’re terrible. Just go crawl away to a shack somewhere. It’s fine. You’ll be doing the world a favour.”
‘Then when I post it and then someone’s like, “Hi, I enjoyed this,” I have this surprise moment where I go, “Oh my god, I literally wasn’t expecting that.”‘
‘I didn’t even accept that I was gay, full stop, no matter what that meant, positive, negative, the consequences of me saying that, or anything, until I was 27 and I was writing that video,’ he added. ‘Because in the back of my mind, it was just “I am not going to think about this.” And it took me literally pulling the plaster off, trying to write something about it for people’s entertainment for me to actually be honest with myself.’
Shortly after the video, however, Daniel disappeared again (a tendency of his that we decided to dub ‘the Adele effect’ during our chat) and he became convinced he would never return to YouTube. It was partly because of the success of the video, which had racked up a whopping 12million views.
‘After I posted my Basically, I’m Gay video, part of me thought, “Well, not only do I have no idea what I’m doing with my life, but I also think I can never top this, so I can’t imagine I’d ever come back with something better,”‘ he pointed out.
‘I love panicking myself into a spiral. So I thought, “Hey, people just like it when I show my face. Why not?” You know, feed the birds like I’m a mother bird just sicking up and regurgitating the content. And they’re like, “Thank you.” That’s how I imagined it.’
It’s not a totally inaccurate image. Daniel has what is probably one of the most loyal fanbases around. After 12 years, his audience has grown up with him, and the impact he’s had on people is huge.
‘When everything is comments and likes, it’s just impossible to see how it’s real,’ he reflected. ‘But just hearing one person say, “Hey, I came to your show and no matter what was going on with my life for two hours, I had a good time, thank you,” that makes me just think of all the things that I feel stressed about, all the things that I waste my own time neurotically panicking about, I just go, “Well, that’s a complete waste of time, isn’t it?” Because here we have the one thing that is real.’
Things haven’t always been smooth, though – far from it. Before the #BeKind mantras of the past few years, the internet could be a terrifying place, particularly for someone like Daniel.
‘When I started on YouTube, it was the most toxic place in the entire world,’ he admitted. ‘It was just wild. The whole internet was wild, you’d go on a forum and you’d be like, “Hi, my Samsung TV’s broken.” And people would be like, “I hope you die, Kelly.”
‘We’ve been on this natural evolution where it is now cool to be nice. Whoa! You think about everything to do with social justice happening on the internet, and what that boils down to basically is we’re all actually just trying to be good. And the idea that that is actually the tone on the internet that we’re all trying to be better – I can’t even imagine how we got here.’
So much has changed on the internet since Daniel started out, with one part of it being how young people see themselves represented. Just recently, we saw the Netflix romance series Heartstopper , based on the graphic novels by Alice Oseman, potentially change things for countless LGBTQ+ youngsters around the world.
Speaking about his own experience, Daniel explained: ‘I regret not being authentic about my sexuality sooner, because, this is something that applies to anyone. They don’t have to be some kind of gay! They could be in a job that they don’t like, they could have some kind of relationship with someone and they feel like they are avoiding some kind of truth that they know is there and they just don’t want to deal with it because it’ll be difficult. And that was very much me with my sexuality lurking in the background. But that holds you back from actually being present in your life and enjoying good times when they come.
‘I think there were lots of moments that I didn’t fully enjoy, lots of friendships I could have had over the years. And I felt like I had a wall up that was preventing me from just being real with the people around me. Even when people came to my last tour, and they’d meet me after the show, and they’d say, “Hey, Dan, you did this one thing, you opened up about your mental health, that really helped me and I just want to say thank you.” I said, this is really beautiful, but I don’t feel like I deserve to hear this because I felt I was still lying about something fundamental and massive on my end, hiding my sexuality.
‘So I really regret not just being honest with myself and the world sooner because life is incredibly short and we’ve probably only got one. So we do not need to waste years at a time running away from things on any level that we fundamentally know are true, even if it’s going to be very difficult to overcome.’
Help us raise £10k for Albert Kennedy Trust and Kyiv Pride
While we celebrate 50 years of Pride this year, Metro.co.uk is shining a light on two charities that offer life saving support to the LGBTQ+ community - and asking readers to please donate whatever you can to help them both continue to help others.
Our first charity is Kyiv Pride . With the war still raging in Ukraine, the safety of the LGBTQ+ community is under threat now more than ever. In recent months Kyiv Pride has opened a shelter which provides emergency accommodation to LGBTQ+ people left homeless or penniless by the fighting, especially for those with families who do not accept them. They have also supplied food, money and support to people who have no one else to turn to. But they still need to do more to keep their LGBTQ+ community safe.
Here in the UK, akt is a charity that supports LGBTQ+ people aged 16-25 who are facing or experiencing homelessness or living in a hostile environment. With 77% of LGBTQ+ young people the charity works with believing that coming out at home was the main factor in causing their homelessness and an increase of 71% of people accessing their services in the last year, their support is vital in helping turn their lives around.
Metro.co.uk appreciates that the cost of living has impacted everyone and money may be tight, but if you are able to make a donation and help change someone’s life both here and in Ukraine, you can do so here .
‘It couldn’t have ever happened earlier,’ he continued. ‘But I just regret that it didn’t. I wish that I had the Heartstopper dream and I was out there living that happy life since I was 14, because it would have been so much happier. So that’s the only thing – I regret it but I do accept that this is life, we cannot change the way that things go. I am grateful to even be where I am.’
So where exactly is Daniel now?
He’s always been open about his mental health and says there are definitely days where he struggles but he’s getting better at seeing the positives.
Writing his book You Will Get Through This Night helped him immensely with that, and he’s got pretty good at picking out the positives. Despite being an all-out introvert, he’s excited to get back to events – he recently returned to his emo roots to see My Chemical Romance live, which he dubbed a ‘transcendental experience’ and is pumped to return to London Pride.
‘I think one of the wildest moments was going to London Pride in 2019 pre-apocalypse, because I had never been to a Pride before, trying desperately to keep myself out of all conversations tangentially related to sexuality,’ he recalled. ‘And to be in such an environment that isn’t just people on Twitter being like “Yas, gay etc, werk queen, snap,” but just seeing thousands of people in this radically accepting environment was such a tidal wave of powerful acceptance.
‘When you go to something like Pride, and you just see thousands of people in the streets, it almost blunt forces this fundamental truth that it is okay, and that you are accepted for who you are. And that for me, it was a real mind-blowing moment.’
And of course, he lights up thinking about his upcoming tour, We’re All Doomed, which will allow him to see his viewers in person for the first time in years.
‘People are saying, “What’s the difference gonna be [compared to previous tours]? I’m scared, is it going to be incredibly homosexual and depressing?” And I’m going to say, yes,’ he laughed.
‘Maybe that’s what the people want. And really, the idea of the show is, after the last three years, I think we all have this point where we wake up, we look at our phones in the morning, and we just see this barrage of terrible things. Like okay, the ocean’s on fire, there’s some kind of solar flare that’s coming to destroy us all randomly while we sleep, the bees are dying, and you just think, “Damn, we’re totally f**ked.” Maybe. I don’t know.
‘So I thought, why not do a whole comedy show about literally all the most terrible anxiety-inducing things going on?
‘There’s a lot of scary s**t that’s happening in the world. And if you can come to my show, and spend an hour and a half laughing about it, you’ll be able to handle anything. Because maybe you’ll think there’s some hope for the future, things are gonna be alright. But at the very least, if not, you’ll think, “Well we put it all out on the table. And we had a good inappropriate laugh about it.” And now, when the flames start to rise and the moon falls from the sky, we’ll be like, “Ah, it’s alright.”‘
Tickets for Daniel Howell’s world tour We’re All Doomed are on sale now.

Daniel Howell: We Are All Doomed
Review of the YouTube star's stand-up tour
The London Palladium is busy tonight, but the bar is doing slow business. Daniel Howell attracts a very young - predominantly female - audience, many of who don’t seem old enough to buy alcohol.
It is not your usual comedy crowd. At one point, when they all jump out of their chairs to eagerly burst bubbles blown from the stage, it feels – at least to this middle-aged old hack – more like a children’s birthday party. Even before the show, screams of giddy, Beatlemania-like excitement break out. As those in the stalls craned their necks skywards, gasping loudly, I genuinely thought Howell was going to make his showbiz entrance flying in on a wire. But no, they had just spotted the superstar that is Phil Lester in the circle.
If you have to ask ‘who?’, this is not the show for you.
Lester used to make online content with Howell, who has now broken out with this solo tour that is pure Gen Z: broad-brush, socially-astute, left-leaning politics with a hefty dose of mental health soul-searching, topped with positive affirmations in which he tells his audience to fight to overcome their insecurities and that their voice does matter.
This may be a comedy show, but laughter is not the response he most often gets. Instead, whoops and claps of appreciation ring out, partly because he plays the crowd so well, priming them with urgent inflections and pregnant pauses that the audience dutifully fill with applause.
He’s an engaging guy and has forged a close relationship with his fans online. They empathise with his despair at the state of the world, his desire to make things better, and fears that anything he does is inconsequential. All that feeds into his feelings of inadequacy that he’s upfront about discussing. His fans surely see themselves in him - even if, at 31, he’s more than a decade older than most of them – and root so vocally for him.
But objectively, without that shared history, that intimacy, that frisson of seeing your pal from the screen in the flesh, the show seems shallow.
Howell presses the right buttons, gets the right responses, and everyone loves him - but there’s little ingenuity in the comedy, little nuance or subtlety. Misdirection is key to stand-up, hiding truths in analogy, irony or abrupt revelations. However, that’s anathema to YouTuber influencers, who build their followings from being direct and selling their authenticity, or at least a version of it.
Howell starts in a suitably West End way, descending a staircase, ironically singing Everything’s Fine – as a video mashup of news events suggests an impending doomsday. Production values are excellent, and Howell’s a good entertainer, even if his subsequent stand-up can be a bit stagily performed and over-rehearsed.
The first half reviews some societal problems that fuel his fears that we are all doomed, such as the evils of social media. And yes, he does acknowledge the hypocrisy of that, given that he’s made his name online, or of going on a carbon-belching world tour to talk about climate change. He has a generally simplistic but crowd-pleasing approach. ‘Perhaps billionaires could pay more tax and then some people wouldn’t have to be homeless,’ he offers. A room presses ‘like’ in their heads.
Part two starts in a similar vein, as he sets himself up as a moral judge, flashing up various celebrities and getting the crowd to scream their approval or otherwise. And they do so full-throatedly, hollering for familiar bêtes noir from Joe Rogan to Elon Musk to JK Rowling to be shot into the sun. This pseudo game show lasts way too long, but no one seems to mind.
Then the emotional pivot. Howell takes a seat, a single spotlight illuminating him, as he talks earnestly and exclusively about the mental health struggles he’d previously been mentioning in parallel with all the big issues that exacerbate them. He shares a mood diary that rarely shows him happy, with flare-ups of self-loathing – and this after finally accepting his homosexuality, previously a big part of his adolescent unhappiness.
It’s candid and heartfelt – and undoubtedly reassures those members of his audience struggling with self-esteem and finding their place in this bin fire of a world that they are not alone. He’s doing good work.
However, if you’re a comedy fan who’s never previously encountered Howell, and wondering if the guy who’s filling out the London Palladium – twice – is a stand-up wunderkind you need to put on your radar… well, the answer’s no. But you can’t begrudge his success in giving a new generation exactly what they want, and probably need.

Dan Howell left YouTube for two years. He returned to examine the “runaway train” of content creation.
In the mid-2010s, Dan Howell seemed to have it all. He and fellow creator Phil Lester comprised the duo known as Dan & Phil , and their shared star seemed to have no limits. They hosted their own BBC radio show . They launched an app . They went on tour several times .
Then, in 2019, two things happened. Howell came out as “basically” gay , ending years of fan speculation. Then, he stopped uploading new videos — until now.
What caused Howell to take an extended videomaking hiatus of more than two years? He answered that question in an 85-minute video titled “Why I Left YouTube,” which arrived on his channel on May 4.

“Why I Left YouTube” is much more than a long-form explanation. It’s a case of study of an individual creator’s rise and fall, from his early bright-eyed days to the apex of his influence to the mental breakdown triggered by all that fame. It’s a story we’ve heard before , but few people have articulated these unique pressures with Howell’s level of exactitude and wit.
Many of the topics Howell discusses in this video are common talking points in the creator community. He devotes a lot of words to the crushing demands of a career on YouTube. In order to “make it,” creators must always be uploading, or else the recommendation algorithm will give them a cold shoulder. Digital fame comes with nasty comments that cut deeply, even if each one is preceded by 1,000 compliments. And then there’s the tug-of-war between The Content You Want To Make and The Content Your Subscribers Expect From You. “The journey of your channel isn’t about growing your creative style,” Howell says. “It’s playing life in public.”
Howell also expresses frustrations that only a digital celebrity can truly understand. He talks about how his fervent fanbase made him feel like an “internet Godzilla,” because he couldn’t support other creators without inundating them with a deluge of chaotic commentary. He also puts the design of YouTube’s Creator Studio in his crosshairs. “If you do literally anything less than a new best record every time, sorry, you get the bad graph today,” he says.
Then there’s the media. (Hi Dan!) Even though Howell worked tirelessly to make videos, he couldn’t escape the derogatory label of YouTuber, which to him implied unprofessionalism. “YouTuber is a slur,” he states. “We are always Logan Paul taking a walk through the woods .”
All of these issues compounded upon one another, and by the time Howell released his coming out video, “there was nothing left.” At that point, he says he felt he “had been on this runaway train that dominated my life for years and suddenly I just pulled the emergency brake.”
And yet, despite all of that, he’s back. He has renewed his commitment to his YouTube channel and planned a sweeping world tour that will take his live show across Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand throughout 2022 and 2023. Given all the things he has grappled with — from the rabidity of his fans to the difficulty of his coming out to the exasperation of his stunted communications with YouTube higher-ups — no one would blame him if he logged off for good. But that’s not going to happen. “I can’t help it,” he admits. “I love this gosh darn heckhole.”
