Here’s a quick preview of some fun highlights you’ll find across Mardi Gras’ zones:

  • The Ultimate Playground zone features BOLT™: Ultimate Sea Coaster , the first roller ever on a cruise ship.
  • Summer Landing delivers casual summer classics any time of year, with BBQ from Guy Fieri at Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse|Brewhouse , poolside bar The Watering Hole… plus Swirls soft serve (one of two on the ship!).

Carnival Cruise Line Cancels Cruises Into 2021 And Confirms It Is Selling A Ship

When Carnival Mardi Gras finally launches in February 2021, she will become the largest cruise ship to ever sail for Carnival Cruise Lines. Sailing from Port Canaveral, Carnival Mardi Gras will feature 6 distinct zones and the widest choice of accommodation. Let’s take a deck-by-deck look at what we can look forward to onboard the latest fun ship, in this detailed ship tour preview.

Named after the line’s first ever cruise ship in 1972, the new Carnival Mardi Gras will carry 5,200 guests. Originally set to debut in August 2020, the ship has been delayed a few times due to COVID-19 and construction delays at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland. The latest Carnival ship, which features the first rollercoaster at sea, and six distinct zones, is now expected to set sail on her maiden voyage on 6 February 2021.

Navigate Carnival Mardi Gras:

Deck 4 – Family Harbor Staterooms, Family Harbor Lounge, Camp Ocean

carnival cruise ship mardi gras tour

If you’re travelling with family, you’ll want to try and book a stateroom on Deck 4. This is where the Family Harbor staterooms, dedicated Family Harbor Lounge, and Camp Ocean children facilities can be found.

In terms of accommodation, you can choose from the nautical-themed Family Harbor Interior, Family Harbor Oceanview or the spacious Family Harbor Oceanview Suite. The Family Harbor Interior staterooms are perfect for active families looking to spend as much time away from their stateroom enjoying all the activities onboard Mardi Gras. These staterooms have a square-shaped footprint, while the Family Harbor Oceanview staterooms have a longer rectangular-shaped footprint, with a sofa and cushioned seating by the window, letting in natural daylight from the large picture-window. The Family Harbor Oceanview Suites are even larger with a separate seating area, which can be partitioned off to create a dedicated room for children, complete with their own bedside TV.

The Family Harbor Lounge is an exclusive spot with breakfast, snacks during the day, plus board games, family movies, video games and more. The benefits of booking these staterooms don’t end there. Small children eat free in most onboard specialty restaurants and get a free evening of Night Owls babysitting service, so you can enjoy a little alone time.

Family Harbor Lounge on Carnival Mardi Gras

Next door to the Family Harbor Lounge and in the centre of Deck 4 is Camp Ocean and Dr. Seuss’ Bookville . Camp Ocean is the kids club catering for children aged between 2-11. Penguins is for those aged 2-5, Stingrays for ages 6-8 and Sharks for ages 9-11. This is also where you’ll find Dr. Seuss’ Bookville, a fun whimsical library for kids.

Deck 5 – Cloud 9 Spa, Cloud 9 Spa Staterooms, The Chef’s Table

A growing trend among many new ships is the relocation of the Spa complex to the lower decks of the ship. On Carnival Mardi Gras, the Cloud 9 Spa ($) , along with its thermal spa, treatment rooms, thalassotherapy pool, hair & beauty salon, as well as dedicated Cloud 9 Spa staterooms can be found on Deck 5, although the main public entrance and fitness centre is located above on Deck 6.

Cloud 9 Spa on Carnival Mardi Gras

Upon entering the Cloud 9 Spa, you’ll feel a sense of calm with natural wood accents, white marble counters, and rainforest green furnishings. The soothing treatment rooms offer an oasis for traditional spa services like massages, facials and body wraps. Carnival Mardi Gras features a much larger thalassotherapy pool compared to previous ships. Access to the thalassotherapy pool and thermal spa is at a charge, although complimentary for those staying in Cloud 9 Spa Staterooms. Prices are as follows: Daily Pass is $40 per person; 4 days is $79pp; 5 days is $99pp; 6 days is $119pp; 7 days is $139pp; 14 days is $279pp.

Cloud 9 Spa on Carnival Mardi Gras

Following the same soothing colour palette as the spa complex, the Cloud 9 Spa Interior staterooms offer a tranquil place to return after a busy day exploring ashore. The larger, rectangular-shaped Cloud 9 Spa Oceanview offer more premium spacious surroundings to unwind, with the addition of a sofa and unspoilt natural views to the outside. Alternatively, for some extra space, the Cloud 9 Spa Balcony features a private sheltered or clear view veranda.

Cloud 9 Spa Interior Stateroom on Carnival Mardi Gras

The even larger Cloud 9 Spa Suite has a lounge, which can be partitioned off from the bed area, and an unobstructed balcony, letting in natural golden hues from the Caribbean sun, although these suites are actually located away from the rest of the Cloud 9 Spa accommodations and situated on Deck 17. All Cloud 9 Spa staterooms come with bathrobes and slippers, Elemis toiletries, priority spa reservations, unlimited access to the thermal suites, free fitness classes, and exclusive discounts.

Located deep within the galley at the back of Deck 5 is Chef’s Table ($) , the exclusive fine-dining experience at the heart of the action. Hosted by the Master Executive Chef, you’ll also be given a fascinating tour of the galley.

Deck 6 – Theater, Punchliner Comedy Club, Piano Bar 88, JavaBlue Cafe, Cherry On Top, Grand Central, French Quarter

carnival cruise ship mardi gras tour

Deck 6 is where the layout of Carnival Mardi Gras drastically changes from previous Carnival ships. A more traditional theatres replaces the flexible seating layout of the Liquid Lounge found on other Carnival vessels. The new Mardi Gras Theater will give better sight lines, but perhaps lacks the aesthetic personality of other theatres at sea. The entertainment on offer will make up for any lack of design, such as the highly-anticipated new Family Feud Live, and the incredible Playlist Productions.

Mardi Gras Theater on Carnival Mardi Gras

On Carnival Mardi Gras, The Punchliner Comedy Club will get its own dedicated venue, hosting incredibly hilarious stand-up comedians and improvisational comedy.

The Punchliner Comedy Club on Carnival Mardi Gras

A signature on Carnival ships, Piano Bar 88 is a popular evening venue, where guests sing along as a pianist plays. The piano is surrounded by an iconic curved table, resembling the black and white keys of a piano.

A more refined, JavaBlue Cafe ($) will be popular for those who enjoy speciality tea or coffee. Here, you’ll also be able to enjoy some irresistible cake, hearty soups, healthy salads, and fresh sandwiches. Items will be priced individually.

Cherry On Top ($) remains as colourful as ever on Carnival Mardi Gras. This sugar-filled room has a mouth-watering range of candy, chocolates and Pick n Mix available for purchase as a souvenir or onboard treat.

Grand Central is a real focal point of the ship. Unlike the majority of cruise ship atriums, which span several decks in the middle of the ship, this one is offset to the starboard side flanked by huge floor-to-ceiling windows, giving unrivalled vistas of the ocean. There is a stage for performances and an art deco focal ceiling installation inspired by the 1972 ship, which Mardi Gras bears the same name. In the evening, Grand Central becomes an entertainment hub, with a moving video wall.

Moving past The Fun Shops, French Quarter is a new concept for Carnival Cruise Lines, inspired by the famous New Orleans neighbourhood.

The deep purple velvet decor suggests The Fortune Teller ($) has a rich history, and possibly something a bit more mysterious. High spirits are common place here, and talented bartenders conjure up other worldly drinks like the all-black  New Moon , the colour changing  Abracadabra , plus the  Golden Galaxy , made with actual bits of authentic gold.

The Fortune Teller Bar on Carnival Mardi Gras

The stylish Brass Magnolia ($) fuses two icons of New Orleans: its amazing jazz and the historic Garden District. Get lost in the music as you listen to the live jazz and blues from the resident band, while enjoying classic cocktails. Step further into this venue and be amazed as the bar opens up into an elegant vaulted ceiling spanning two decks with a vibrant gold bar in the centre surrounded by lush greenery wall accents. The ornate decor is reminiscent of the grand mansions of the South.

Completing the French Quarter is Emeril’s Bistro 1396 ($) . World-renowned chef and restaurateur Emeril Lagasse’s first seagoing restaurant is named after the hull number of Carnival Mardi Gras at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland. Signature dishes including cochon de lait po-boys and his famous barbecue shrimp, as well as Creole favourites including gumbo and jambalaya.

Emeril's Bistro 1396 on Carnival Mardi Gras

First introduced on Carnival Panorama, Carnival Kitchen ($) is designed to let you have fun with cooking and learn new skills to impress friends and family when you return home. Perhaps it’s learning to roll sushi, make a hearty home-made soup, become a master of cupcakes or simply just improve your daily cooking techniques, you’ll definitely cook up a new found passion when you return to your home kitchen.

The Flamingo Restaurant is one of the main dining venues on Carnival Mardi Gras and although modern and contemporary, it does lack some character. In contrast, Palm Restaurant is a much more visually impressive and stylish restaurant spanning two levels. The timeless architecture and lighting give this restaurant lots of charm and grandeur.

  • Cruise Advice

Carnival’s biggest cruise ship is divided into six themed “zones” and offers several fun attractions and innovative features, including the first-ever roller coaster at sea.

With over 20 dining options and nearly the same number of bars and lounges, it’s easy to let the good times roll on this new Carnival Fun Ship.

mardi gras PortMiami carnival cruise line

There’s so much to experience on Carnival Mardi Gras , so we’ve rounded up a series of “must-dos” for those planning their cruise.

While sailing on Mardi Gras in late October, I asked Carnival executives, journalists, crew members , and dozens of guests to name one or two “don’t miss” experiences on board.

So, without further ado, here are the best 21 things to do on Carnival Mardi Gras:

In this article:

Experience the BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster

2. have fun at carnival skycourse, 3. take a carnival kitchen cooking class, 4. enjoy a seaday brunch, 5. explore the waterworks on carnival mardi gras, 6. dine at rudi’s seagrill, 7. taste emeril’s bistro 1396’s fried oysters, 8. experience the bar crawl on carnival mardi gras, 9. eat some burgers at guy’s burger joint, 10. enjoy a meal at big chicken, 11. explore the grand central atrium shows & entertainment, 12. dine at chef’s table, 13. eat a freshly-made pizza at pizzeria del capitano, 14. taste some cheesesteak fries at street eats on carnival mardi gras, 15. see a family feud live, 16. enjoy chinese cuisine at chibang, 17. try fahrenheit 555 steakhouse’s baked onion soup, 18. have breakfast at blueiguana cantina, 19. laugh out loud at punchliner comedy club, 20. relax in serenity or loft 19, 21. pay a visit to cloud 9 spa thermal suite.

bolt roller coaster mardi gras

BOLT is the first roller coaster at sea – and it’s quite a ride. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever experienced on a cruise ship, so don’t miss it. I rode BOLT three times on my cruise, and it’s addictive.

BOLT is a top-deck electric-powered roller coaster in Mardi Gras’ Ultimate Playground zone. This innovative roller coaster recently won a “Best of What’s New” engineering award granted by Popular Science magazine.

The ride’s elevated track spans the cruise ship’s upper decks and features 800 feet of thrilling twists, dips, and turns, including a zooming hairpin loop around Mardi Gras’ tri-colored funnel. Riders on BOLT’s motorcycle-inspired vehicles can go as fast as 40 miles per hour while taking 360-degree views of the sea 187 feet below.

bolt roller coaster sign mardi gras

Frequent BOLT riders recommend going full throttle throughout the entire session and using your vehicle’s boost on the track’s straight sections and right before a dip. It’s good to leave a few seconds between each boost for maximum effect.

As of December 2021, BOLT is priced at $15 per person for a two-lap ride. Try to make reservations for a time during the first part of your cruise in case you need to reschedule due to weather.

mardi gras zip line ropes course

Located in the Ultimate Playground zone, Carnival Mardi Gras’ 600-foot ropes course is the longest in Carnival’s fleet.

This thrilling ropes course features two levels: one for beginners and the other for guests seeking a major adrenaline rush.

Unlike some other cruise ship ropes courses you may have been on, the Mardi Gras ropes course has a zip line that takes riders out over the ocean with nothing but the water below. It’s a thrill!

Once you’ve done this free ropes course, you’ll likely want to do it again and again.

Want to improve your pizza-making skills or upgrade your BBQ game? Take a Carnival Kitchen Cooking Class on Mardi Gras and learn from Carnival’s culinary pros.

A wide range of classes are available, from sushi-making to cake workshops. Classes are held each week – sometimes two or three per day – for groups of 18 or less.

There’s also an evening workshop class that includes making a delicious dinner that includes Carnival’s famous Warm Chocolate Melting Cake.

Classes are available for guests ages 12 and older, and prices vary depending on the class. Make sure to sign up online as early as possible — they sell out fast!

seaday brunch carnival cruise line

One of my favorite things about sea days on a Carnival cruise ship is enjoying a relaxing Seaday Brunch. The free Seaday Brunch is held in Mardi Gras’ main dining room, and it was as great as ever.

Carnival’s Seaday Brunch is popular among guests, so we avoided standing in line using the HUB app. Our table was ready in about ten minutes, and while we were waiting, we used the HUB app to check out the menu.

You’ll be glad you have the extra time — there’s so much to choose from on Carnival’s Seaday Brunch menu. From burgers and fried chicken to huevos rancheros and 12-hour French toast, there are plenty of options to delight every palate.

mardi gras waterworks

Mardi Gras’ massive onboard waterpark is currently the largest in Carnival’s entire fleet. Located in the ship’s Ultimate Playground zone, the waterpark is a go-to spot for fun-loving kids and families, thrill-seekers, and the young at heart.

WaterWorks features three water slides – the 312-foot Blue Lightning, the 229-foot Orange Thunder, and the 265-foot spiraling Carnival Twister waterslide.

Zipping down these splash-tastic water slides hits the spot on a hot day. There’s also a 150-gallon power-drencher tipping bucket and a splash zone for kids with many fantastic water elements.

rudi's seagrill mardi gras

Rudi Sodamin, Holland America Line’s amazing Master Chef, has been wowing guests of Carnival’s sister line for years. Now Chef Rudi has brought his extraordinary skills to Carnival Mardi Gras by launching his specialty seafood restaurant, Rudi’s Seagrill.

Rudi Sodamin’s multi-course dining experience is phenomenal and well worth the $48 per-person charge . Seafood entrée includes Crab Stuffed Lobster Tail, Roasted Halibut, Crab Cake, Dover Sole, and Grilled Colossal Shrimp.

The 14 oz. New York Strip Steak, Berkshire Pork Chop, and Free Range Chicken at Rudi’s Seagrill will surely please those who aren’t seafood lovers.

Rudi’s Seagrill is popular, so make your reservations well in advance.

emeril's bistro 1396 mardi gras

The crown jewel of Mardi Gras’ French Quarter zone is Emeril’s Bistro 1396, legendary chef Emeril Lagasse’s first restaurant at sea.

Located in the heart of the French Quarter on Deck 6, Emeril’s Bistro 1396 features the authentic New Orleans flavors of Emeril’s hometown.

The celebrity chef specially created the restaurant’s menu, which features individually-priced small plates, “A Little More” entrees, “A Little Sweet” desserts, kids’ meals, a raw and chilled seafood bar, and even a breakfast menu.

Menu items have Emeril’s signature Creole twist and include Sizzling Cast Iron Shrimp Scampi, Fried Oysters, Emeril’s New Orleans Style Barbecue Shrimp, Roasted Duck and andouille Sausage Gumbo, Lemon Ice Box Pie, and Bananas Foster.

The food at Emeril’s is delicious, and the prices are very reasonable. We ended up dining here multiple times during our cruise.

Don’t miss coming to Emeril’s for breakfast. The Pain Perdu, Sweet Potato Waffles, and freshly-made New Orleans-style coffee are outstanding.

crystal ball cocktail fortune teller bar

Mardi Gras offers guests close to 20 excellent bars and lounges onboard.

There are tons of new specialty drinks and bars to try on this ship. Head out to a fun Mardi Gras Bar Crawl and discover fabulous new bars, cocktails, and old favorites.

You’ll find two can’t-miss spots in Mardi Gras’ French Quarter. The Brass Magnolia has a New Orleans-inspired atmosphere, serving strong Hurricanes and live jazz music.

The Fortune Teller Bar, another brand new bar in Carnival Cruise Line, is also located on the ship. Make sure to order a Crystal Ball cocktail.

Bar Della Rosa, also a new Carnival bar in the Italian-themed La Piazza zone, serves espresso drinks during the day, Italian cocktails, and wine at night.

The Grand Central atrium is home to two bars, making it easy for those watching a show to get a drink.

The Carnival Mardi Gras bar line-up also features popular favorites, including the Alchemy Bar, Havana Bar, Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse, and Piano Bar 88.

Carnival cruise lovers will be happy to know that the RedFrog Rum Bar has been expanded into the two-story RedFrog Tiki Bar on Mardi Gras .

Don’t miss the incredible views at The Watering Hole in the Summer Landing Zone, and stop by the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge while you’re in that area, too. Carnival will donate a portion of the sale to benefit Operation Homefront when you purchase a specialty cocktail or beer in a souvenir glass.

guy's burger joint mardi gras

Guy’s Burger Joint on Deck 17 is Fieri’s first Carnival Cruise Line dining venue, and it’s as popular as ever on Mardi Gras. Guy’s Burger Joint serves the same handcrafted burgers and fries we all love. Not only is the Guy’s Burger Joint on this ship the largest at sea, but the restaurant also offers a menu of breakfast sandwiches each morning.

Barbecue lovers should head down to Deck 8 for excellent smoked meats, comfort food sides, and a home-brewed beer at Guy Fieri’s other restaurant, Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse. All meals at Guy’s Pig & Anchor are currently free of charge on Mardi Gras .

big chicken mardi gras

The much-awaited Big Chicken restaurant launched on Mardi Gras , and it’s already a huge hit.

Created by Carnival’s Chief Fun Officer Shaquille O’Neal, Big Chicken offers a wide array of tasty chicken sandwiches, chicken strips, and even a fried chicken basket. It’s also the first Big Chicken on a cruise ship.

Guests can choose from white or dark meat (grilled chicken available on request), and items can be ordered with fries and sides like jalapeño slaw, potato salad, and sweet and spicy pickles.

Big Chicken also offers a large toppings bar and, as the restaurant’s sign says, “We Encourage Sauciness.” Sauces include Shaq sauce, barbecue, buttermilk ranch, and buffalo hot sauce.

Big Chicken is open for lunch and dinner; breakfast is served until 3 p.m. daily. Make sure to try the breakfast biscuits – they’re delicious.

voodoo moon show mardi gras

The innovative three-deck-high Grand Central Atrium space is one of Carnival Mardi Gras’ six themed zones – and it’s a winner.

The atrium’s huge 3,000 square-foot glass panels built into the ship’s side provide guests with beautiful sea views. It’s a wonderful place to relax, listen to live music, or participate in games and contests.

mardi gras trip report grand central

At night, the Grand Central Atrium transforms into a multi-story venue for spectacular shows with talented performances, aerial acrobatics, and special effects. The Grand Central Atrium’s 16 massive LED screens can display videos, lasers, and other unique effects – providing an ever-changing backdrop.

Don’t miss the ship’s New Orleans Celebration with its Mardi Gras-style parade and incredible “Voodoo Moon” performance. It’s one of the most fantastic entertainment experiences I’ve seen at sea.

chef's table mardi gras

Foodies rave about the Chef’s Table on Mardi Gras . At $99 per person , this small group multi-course dining experience is a splurge – but it’s a VIP experience for just 14 guests hosted by the Master Executive Chef.

The Chef’s Table features cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a unique menu of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. It has its own space on Deck 5 Aft.

Guests must be at least 12 years of age or older to participate. Since limited seating is available, make your reservations as early as possible.

pizzeria del capitano mardi gras

Located in the La Piazza zone on Carnival Mardi Gras , Pizzeria del Capitano serves fantastic freshly-made pizza 24 hours a day.

Different hand-tossed thin-crust pies, including Margherita, Funghi (mushroom), Pepperoni, Quattro Formaggi (four cheese), and Prosciutto, are available. Guests can also request a gluten-free pie or a Caesar salad.

Piazza Panini is next to the La Piazza area, a counter-service sandwich shop also open 24/7.

piazza panini mardi gras dining

Guests can order classic deli sandwiches, including Reubens and meatball subs, delicious paninis such as a Caprese panini (served hot or cold), or meat-lovers varieties like Carne or Salumeria. Yummy desserts are available after 8 p.m. daily.

Best of all, both Pizzeria del Capitano and Piazza Panini are free.

Mardi Gras Trip Report street eats

Street Eats is a new dining concept in Carnival Cruise Line, located on Lido Deck 16 around Mardi Gras’ Beach Pool area. Inspired by food trucks and street eateries, Street Eats consists of three open-air counter-service stalls — Steam Dream, Mad Sizzle, and Time Fries.

Steam Dream serves delicious bao buns and potstickers, while Mad Sizzle features kebabs and satays. Time Fries features chef-created french fries loaded with toppings, such as Cheesesteak Fries.

Street Eats is free of charge and open for lunch. Menus change constantly.

If you like these kinds of food stalls, don’t miss having lobster rolls at the Seafood Shack (available for an extra charge) and the free shawarma station and hot dog stations in the Lido Marketplace. The Lido’s free gelato is also a big hit among kids and adults.

mardi gras trip report Family Feud

It’s fitting that Carnival’s brand-new Fun Ship should also feature an exciting new game show. Family Feud™ Live launched on Mardi Gras, and it had a packed house on our cruise.

The set is exactly like the one you’ve seen on the iconic TV game show. Our cruise director and teams participating in Family Feud™ Live on our sailing made the entertainment experience fast-paced and fun.

chibang chef mardi gras

This unique restaurant that combines Chinese and Mexican cuisines is another first for Carnival Cruise Line. Located on Deck 8, Chibang! is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I didn’t expect to be wowed by this restaurant, but we ended up eating here twice on our cruise.

The lunch menu consists of build-your-own bowls, while dinner is a multi-course affair offering Chinese and Mexican selections.

Guests can mix and match from both sides of the menu, with choices like Sweet and sour Shrimp, Kung Pao Chicken, Steak Ranchero, and Pescado Frito.

Mardi Gras Trip Report Chibang

Although this Carnival Mardi Gras specialty restaurant was originally meant to have an added fee, dining here is currently free for most items.

Carnival Mardi Gras Ship Review And Tour

John Shallo

Join Cruise Addicts aboard the brand new Carnival Mardi Gras. This ship features BOLT the first rollercoaster at sea and so much more. We hope you enjoy this detailed Carnival Mardi Gras ship review and tour.

The 180,000-gross-ton Mardi Gras is the most innovative cruise ship in North America as it will be the first ship to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), boast a suite of new technology, and BOLT, the first-ever roller coaster at sea.

The ship’s venues, dining, and entertainment will be dispersed throughout six distinctive zones, and include a new restaurant by celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, the line’s first-ever Big Chicken by Shaquille O’Neal, two dining venues led by Food Network star Guy Fieri, and a new restaurant concept by master chef Rudi Sodamin.

The aptly named Ultimate Playground will span Decks 18-20 and offer guests amazing sea vistas as they soak up the sun and the fun in this spacious family-friendly play area highlighted by the largest and most elaborate Carnival WaterWorks aqua park in the fleet, along with an expanded SportSquare. The Ultimate Playground is also where guests will find the much-anticipated BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster, the first roller coaster at sea announced in December 2018, where riders race along an 800-foot-long track achieving speeds of nearly 40 miles per hour.

Carnival is already known for its varied casual poolside restaurants and Mardi Gras’ expanded Lido will take this to a whole new level with existing Carnival favorites like Guy’s Burger Joint, the New England-inspired Seafood Shack, and BlueIguana Cantina Mexican eatery, and more.

Designed as the ultimate chill spot, Summer Landing will be home to an expanded Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse with smoked-on-board barbecue favorites created by longtime Carnival partner Guy Fieri, along with the line’s exclusive Parched Pig craft beers brewed right on board. For outdoor summer-inspired fun, there will be a pool and whirlpools, a new bar, the lunch counter for the Smokehouse Brewhouse along with ample lounging spaces and hangouts, making this the ideal spot to enjoy all the fun that a Carnival vacation experience delivers.

At La Piazza, guests are transported to Italy where they celebrate the rich heritage of Carnival’s senior officers with authentic cuisine from the casual family-style Cucina del Capitano and 24/7 Pizzeria del Capitano to a new Mediterranean-themed seafood restaurant. There’s also a bar where guests can savor cappuccino by day or classic Italian cocktails at night, while roaming musicians keep everyone entertained .

Creating a sense of wonder the moment guests step on board, the transformative Grand Central takes the traditional atrium concept to new heights, combining a day-to-night entertainment complex with spectacular three-deck-high floor-to-ceiling windows and a bar overlooking the starboard side of the ship that will be the perfect venue for socializing and people watching amid sweeping ocean vistas. Steps away are Bonsai Sushi and Bonsai Teppanyaki which are being expanded from designs on existing ships to reflect their popularity with guests. There’s also the first-ever dedicated Punchliner Comedy Club where guests can enjoy nightly shows, and the always popular Piano Bar 88 for sing-a-longs that bring guests together in an intimate feel-good setting.

In a nod to the New Orleans’ culture that combines live entertainment with an unparalleled food scene, French Quarter will be lined with new bars, music , and eateries that perfectly capture the festive spirit of the Big Easy. And since the spirit of New Orleans is so closely tied to the jazz scene, this neighborhood is linked via a two-deck-high promenade leading to a traditional New Orleans jazz club with live entertainment and refreshing hand-crafted libations.

Carnival Mardi Gras Itineraries

Carnival mardi gras review, review of carnival mardi gras.

The 2021-built Carnival Mardi Gras cruise ship is CCL-fleet 's first newest and largest liner of the Carnival XL-Class. All the three units in this series are from the German shipbuilder Meyer Werft (shipyard Turku Finland ). As with all other "Fun Ships", the shipowner is Carnival Corporation - the world's largest passenger shipping company .

The XL-Class is similar in design and facilities to Helios-Class ships produced for Carnival Corporation's brands Costa and AIDA by Meyer Werft in Papenburg Germany . Other Excellence-Class liners (Mardi Gras sisterships) are Carnival Celebration (2022), Carnival Jubilee (2023), P&O Iona (2020), P&O Arvia (2022), Costa Smeralda (2019), Costa Toscana (2021), AIDAnova (2018), AIDAcosma (2021).

The vessel (IMO number 9837444) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311001049) and registered in Nassau .

Carnival XL-Class ship design features a new (red-white-navy blue) hull and was created by the NYC-based naval architecture firm "Bluarch Architecture". Among the world's largest passenger ships , the new liner has length 1130 ft (344 m), passenger capacity 5200 (lower berths) and boasts the most advanced maritime technologies as well as various fleet-first and industry-first innovations.

On December 14, 2018, Carnival announced that the new Mardi Gras will have the industry's first roller coaster at sea. The facility ("BOLT Ultimate Sea Coaster") will be built by Maurer Rides ( Munich Germany -based company) specializing in roller coaster design and manufacturing. The race track has length 244 m (800 ft), with twists, turns, drops and speeds up to 64 kph (40 mph). Individual speeds are posted after the race. Carnival's roller coaster is all-electric and allows 2 riders to race along in motorbike-like vehicles at height 57 m (187 ft) above the sea. The experience features breathtaking top-deck 360-degree views and ends with a high-speed turn around the funnel/smokestack.

On January 25, 2019, was announced that the new Carnival XL-class vessel will have 6 themed zones (neighborhoods) - Grand Central, French Quarter, Lido-Pool, La Piazza, Summer Landing, The Ultimate Playground.

The new shows (named "Celestial Strings", "Soulbound", "Vintage Pop") use the full capacity of the interactive LED screens. A 4th show ("Amor Cubano - A Caribbean Dance Romance") is also available on the Horizon ship. It was introduced in 2017 on Carnival Vista.

  • "Celestial Strings" show is themed on classical music mixed with modern pop.
  • "Soulbound" is a gothic-inspired, New Orleans-themed show featuring R&B music favorites.
  • "Vintage Pop" show is themed on "Gatsby's Cotton Club", featuring modern songs recomposed into classic jazz interpretations performed live by a 6-piece jazz band.
  • "Amor Cubano - A Caribbean Dance Romance" show is themed on classic Latin songs mixed with modern music hits. It is held at the Havana Bar and highlighted by a 7-piece Cuban music band.

Mardi Gras ship's itinerary program is based on Caribbean roundtrips leaving from homeport Port Canaveral (Orlando City, Florida USA) , with preferential berthing at the new "Carnival Terminal 3" (CT3). The canceled in early-July "Caribbean 2020" program was planned to start after the Transatlantic repositioning from Europe. Bookings opened on January 30, 2019.

The canceled 2020 program offered a diverse schedule with 6-day to 15-day itineraries in Europe and the Caribbean. The ship's 2020 schedule included:

  • (repositioning) 9-day "maiden voyage" from Copenhagen to Southampton UK (August 31-September 9, 2020) visiting Kiel, Gothenburg, Oslo, Rotterdam, Zeebrugge and Le Havre (Paris).
  • (repositioning) 14-day Transatlantic crossing from Southampton to NYC New York (September 9-23, 2020) visiting Canary Islands (Las Palmas, Tenerife), Funchal (Madeira Island), Ponta Delgada (Azores).
  • 6-day "inaugural Caribbean cruise" (September 24-30, 2020) roundtrip from NYC to Portland ME and Saint John NB
  • (repositioning) 15-day "Carnival Journeys" itinerary one-way from NYC to Port Canaveral FL (September 30-October 15, 2020), visiting Amber Cove (Dominicana), San Juan (Puerto Rico), St Thomas (USVI), St Maarten, St Kitts, Aruba, Curacao, Grand Turk.
  • Following a special 8-day Caribbean voyage from Port Canaveral (October 16, 2020), the liner had to start a 7-day Caribbean program on October 24, offering two different 3-ports-7-days itineraries (alternating weekly) to Eastern-Western Caribbean ports.

The boat's Maiden Voyage is currently planned to depart on October 2, 2021 (previously scheduled for February 6, April 24, May 29, July 3). The 7-day Western Caribbean itinerary (Port Canaveral roundtrip) visits Mexico ( Cozumel, Costa Maya) and Honduras (Roatan Island's Mahogany Bay).

Carnival Mardi Gras Wiki

Like most large -sized newbuilds , the new Carnival ship Mardi Gras is LNG-powered , with 4x Caterpillar Marine LNG engines (model MaK 16M-46DF) generating combined output 57,2 MW. The propulsion system is based on two Azimuting thrusters with combined power output 37 MW. The ship has 3x LNG tanks (cryogenic steel) with total capacity ~3200 m3. Two of the tanks are larger (length 35 m / 115 ft, diameter 8 m / 26 ft, gas capacity 1525 m3), while the 3rd tank has length 28 m (92 ft), diameter 5 m (16 ft) and gas capacity 520 m3. The ship's bunkering takes ~8 hours and her LNG capacity is enough for ~14 days of operation (navigation and onboard electricity production).

The shipbuilding order (Meyer Turku yard number / hull 1396) was placed on September 6, 2016. On November 15, 2018, was held the steel-cutting ceremony, which officially started the vessel's construction by the shipbuilder Meyer Werft ( Turku Shipyard, Finland ). The keel-laying ceremony was on June 18, 2019. The ship was launched (floated out from drydock) on January 24, 2020, and scheduled for delivery in October. The launch ceremony was attended by Ben Clement (Carnival Cruise Line's Senior VP of newbuilds) and Jan Meyer (Meyer Turku's CEO).

The new liner was officially delivered on December 18, 2020, at Meyer Turku Shipyard. The ceremony was attended by Christine Duffy (Carnival Cruise Line's President) and Tim Meyer (Meyer Turku's CEO).

The second liner (Carnival-XL series sistership) Carnival Celebration will be delivered in 2022, with its construction starting in 2020. In March 2022, Carnival Cruise Line celebrates the company's 50th Anniversary.

The name for the newbuild (yard/hull number 1396) was officially revealed on December 6, 2018, at the Puzzleboard of the US TV game show "Wheel of Fortune" - at the very end of the broadcast. Newbuild's name honors Carnival Cruise Line's first-ever "Fun Ship" - MARDI GRAS. The traditional ocean liner was launched in 1961 (under the name "Empress of Canada"). The vessel (last named Apollon) was scrapped in 2003.

For its LNG-bunkering operations in Florida (at homeports PortMiami and Port Canaveral ), CCL-Carnival partnered with Royal Dutch Shell plc as fuel supplier.

In mid-June 2019 were announced ship's senior officers - Giuseppe Giusa (Captain, 31-year of maritime service, former Italian Navy sergeant, with Carnival since 1993, ex-Master of Ecstasy and Breeze), Ferdinando Ruocco (Chief Engineer, former tanker ship officer, with Carnival since 1997, ex-Chief Engineer of Triumph and Valor) and Pierre Camilleri (Hotel Director, with Carnival since 2004, ex-Hotel Director of BreezeVista and Horizon).

The vessel's keel-laying (aka "coin ceremony") ceremony was held on June 18, 2019, with which officially started ship's construction at Meyer Werft's Turku Shipyard in Finland. During the special event, newly-minted unique coins were placed under the first hull/keel block in the drydock. The coins are traditionally placed to bring luck to the vessel during construction and later at sea.

Mardi Gras was initially Panama- flagged (MMSI 352049000) and started Baltic Sea trials on September 28, 2020, spending 10 days at sea (through October 7) for testing its machinery and navigation equipment. For 5 months in 2021 (January thru May) the boat remained berthed in Barcelona Spain . On May 21st started the Transatlantic repositioning crossing (without passengers) to Florida USA, with scheduled arrival in Port Canaveral on June 4. CCL announced on May 17th that the vessel will change flag-state to Bahamas (MMSI tba) and registered in Nassau .

On May 17, 2021, CCL announced the name of the ship's godmother - Kimberly Jimenez (Kimberly Marie Jimenez Rodriguez, 1997-born in Puerto Rico and raised in Dominicana actress and model, resident of La Romana ).

  • Kimberly Jimenez was crowned "Miss Dominican Republic 2020" (the beauty pageant was held in Santo Domingo on August 18, 2019) and also represented the Dominican Republic at "Miss Universe 2020" (ended 4th Runner Up in the beauty pageant held in Hollywood Florida, on May 16, 2021).
  • Kimberly Jimenez is a champion for at-risk youth and an advocate for adoption, volunteering at Los Ninos de Cristo - an orphanage in La Romana serving abused and abandoned girls. She is also a founding member of IWC Santo Domingo (Dominicana's International Women's Club) providing services to indigent women suffering from breast cancer.
  • CCL also announced that during the Maiden Voyage, Kimberly Jimenez will be joined by Andrea Meza (1994-born Mexican model, crowned "Miss Universe 2020", previously crowned "Mexicana Universal 2020", "Miss Mexico 2017" and 1st Runner-Up at "Miss World 2017").

The christening ceremony was held on October 23, 2021, at Port Canaveral. The official naming ceremony was attended by the Godmother (Kimberly Jimenez) as well as Andrea Meza (Miss Universe 2020), Asya Branch (Miss USA 2020), Arnold Donald (Carnival Corporation's President & CEO), Christine Duffy (CCL's President), Shaquille O'Neal (CCL's Chief Fun Officer), many VIP guests - including Romero Britto (Brazilian painter & sculptor), Emeril Lagasse (restaurateur, celebrity chef), Kathie Lee Gifford (TV presenter, singer), Vanna White (TV personality/film actress), Guy Fieri (restaurateur).

Inaugural cruise 2021 itineraries

Due to construction delays (delayed delivery), the new ship's first 8x cruises in 2020 were canceled. These voyages included the Inaugural Cruise in Europe (Copenhagen to Southampton), the Transatlantic crossing (Southampton to NYC), 2x NYC departures, 4x Port Canaveral roundtrips. You can see the itineraries at the liner's CruiseMinus (accidents) page .

On July 6, 2020, CCL announced that Mardi Gras officially debuts in 2021 (~4 months later), with the inauguration planned for February 6 (Maiden Voyage). A total of 11x itineraries (departures planned for the period November 14 through and including January 30) were canceled.

  • On December 3, 2020, CCL canceled additional 11x Caribbean cruises on Mardi Gras - departures February 6-13-20-27, March 6-13-20-27, April 3-10-17. The Maiden Voyage was rescheduled from February 6 to April 24.
  • In late-January 2021 were canceled 5x more Caribbean departures (April 24 through May 22). The Maiden Voyage was rescheduled for May 29. In early-April were canceled 2 more Caribbean sailings (June 19 and 26) and the Maiden Voyage was rescheduled for July 3.
  • In May 2021 were canceled 10x more Caribbean departures (July 3 through Sept 25) and the Maiden Voyage was rescheduled for October 2.
  • Eventually, Carnival canceled a total of 42x Caribbean sailings planned for the new boat.

The old Mardi Gras ship

TSS Mardi Gras vessel had IMO number 5103936, LOA length 198 m (650 ft), width 26 m (87 ft), draft 9 m (29 ft) and GT tonnage 27,300 tons (originally 18261 GT tons). Liner's capacity was 1240 passengers (originally 1048) plus 470 crew. During its service history, the vessel was named Empress of Canada (1961-1972), TSS Mardi Gras (1972-1993), Olympic (1993), Star of Texas (1994), Lucky Star (1994-1995) and Apollon (1995-2003).

the old Carnival SS Mardi Gras ship

The ocean liner was built at Vickers-Armstrongs shipyard in Newcastle England UK . The yard was located in the city's Walker suburb. Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd (1927-1977) was an engineering-design and shipbuilding company formed in 1927 as a merger of two British companies - Vickers Ltd (engineering) and Armstrong Whitworth (manufacturing - armaments, ships, locomotives, automobiles, planes). In the 1960-1970s, most of Vickers-Armstrongs was nationalized, with the remainder of the company's private assets divested in 1977 as Vickers plc. In 1999, Vickers plc became defunct and was purchased by Rolls-Royce plc. In 2004, the Vickers brand became defunct.

The vessel's launch (float-out from drydock) was on May 10, 1960. It was delivered to Canadian Pacific in March 1961. The inaugural cruise departed on April 24, 1961, from Liverpool to Montreal . The shipowner Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd was founded as "Canadian Pacific Steamship Company" in 1887 in Vancouver BC . In 2005, the company (aka CP Ships) was purchased by TUI AG and became part of TUI's subsidiary Hapag-Lloyd Cruises (acquired in 1998).

Empress of Canada offered regularly scheduled Transatlantic crossings between the UK and Quebec Canada (Liverpool - Montreal). Like all CP liners, Empress of Canada was UK-flagged. After 121 Transatlantic crossings ( ) and 82 Canadian cruises, Empress of Canada arrived in Liverpool on November 23, 1971, with which the regular Liverpool-Canada service was terminated. On December 17 (1971) the liner was laid up in Port Tilbury-London .

In January 1972, the vessel was sold to Carnival Cruise Lines and started operations as "TSS Mardi Gras" under flag-state (registry) Panama. The first "Fun Ship" started its maiden voyage on February 26, 1972, leaving from London to Miami . Mardi Gras sailed for Carnival until 1993 when was sold to Epirotiki Line (Greek shipping company founded in 1850).

In 1995 was created Royal Olympic Cruise Lines as a merger of "Epirotiki Line" and "Sun Line". In 2000, all scheduled voyages were canceled and the boat was laid up in Port Piraeus-Athens Greece . In 2001, the ship (renamed "Apollon") re-entered service for short-breaks (3-4-day) roundtrips from homeport Piraeus. In 2003, the 42-years-old liner was laid up again, and soon sold for scrap.

Slice of 'paradise': Carnival reveals details of new private Bahamas destination

carnival cruise ship mardi gras tour

Carnival Cruise Line passengers will soon have a new way to celebrate on vacation.

The cruise line revealed new details about its upcoming private destination, Celebration Key, on Tuesday, opening in the Bahamas in July 2025. The destination is made up of distinct areas called portals, where guests can enjoy a mix of activities, dining and shopping, with something for passengers of all ages.

"No one does fun like Carnival and we are designing Celebration Key, and its five portals, with endless ways for our guests to unlock their own kind of fun in this incredible paradise that also celebrates the beauty of Grand Bahama," Christine Duffy, the line’s president, said in a news release . “Celebration Key is uniquely positioned to bring an island experience to our diverse range of guests, in a way that lets them choose their slice of ‘paradise.’”

Where is Carnival’s Celebration Key?

Celebration Key will be located on the island of Grand Bahama. The destination is currently featured on more than 500 itineraries on 18 ships, including Carnival Celebration , Mardi Gras and Sunrise.

Carnival ships visit other destination ports owned and operated by parent company Carnival Corp., including Mahogany Bay in Roatan, Honduras; Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic; and Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays in the Bahamas, but Celebration Key will be the first created exclusively for the line.

What can guests expect?

Guests will start their visit at the Welcome Portal, before choosing their own shoreside adventure.

The Family-Friendly Portal will have a freshwater lagoon where visitors can swim, along with racing waterslides in a giant sandcastle, a splash pad with a shallow pool, beach loungers and more. There are also a variety of cabanas for rent, including on beach cabanas, those with individual slides into the lagoon, and cabanas floating in the water.

The Adult-Friendly portal, meanwhile, will allow guests to unwind on the beach, swim in a second lagoon and grab drinks at a swim-up bar. The area will also feature a DJ, cabana rentals and multiple dining options.

At the adults-only Private Club Portal, guests can enjoy amenities like an infinity pool and a dedicated stretch of beach, while the Retail Portal will feature Bahamian artisanal goods, local retailers, duty-free shopping and more.

The destination will also have a pavilion that can host events like weddings and vow renewals. There are plans to add a water park and zipline course, as well, as part of a later expansion.

How much will Celebration Key cost?

Carnival spokesperson Matt Lupoli told USA TODAY in an email that he did not yet have pricing info to share, but the line will announce more details about Celebration Key and its portals in the coming months.

America's addiction to cruises

Cruise ships are bigger and noisier than ever. And Gen Z is to blame.

On January 27, the world's largest cruise ship is set to glide out of the Port of Miami. For the several thousand passengers who have reserved a berth on its maiden voyage through the Caribbean, the Icon of the Seas might seem like the dream holiday. Weighing as much as five Titanics, the ship is a floating ziggurat of fun and indulgence.

The "first-of-its-kind combination of the best of every vacation," as Royal Caribbean describes it, boasts seven pools across the ship's 20 floors, an aquapark with six waterslides, a 55-foot water curtain, and a surfing simulator. There's a climbing wall, an ice-skating rink, a minigolf course, a karaoke bar, a casino, an escape room, an obstacle course, and "The Pearl," a multimedia sphere billed as "the world's largest kinetic sculpture." Passengers have 40 ways to dine across eight distinct "neighborhoods," and 28 ways to sleep, including the $80,000-a-week "Ultimate Family Townhouse," each with its own white picket fence, mailbox, and indoor slide. The opening of reservations for the Icon, in October 2022, saw Royal Caribbean's "single largest booking day in its 53-year history," the company said.

The megaship embodies a rapid redemption for the cruise industry. In the early months of the pandemic, as the global cruising fleet moldered at port, some wondered whether the hiatus might prove terminal. Instead, cruising has come roaring back , setting passenger records and attracting a new cohort of younger travelers.

But the Icon is also debuting at a moment of reckoning. As it pulls away from the American mainland, it will be pursued by a storm of animosity from port communities, environmental activists, and bystanders who feel that, in a period of overtourism and climate crisis , it all seems a bit much .

When a rendering of the Icon's flamboyant stern went viral in July, for every person presenting it as the ultimate vacation, someone else was calling it a monstrosity, an avatar of grotesque overconsumption. Few could deny that the lurid leviathan was indelible. But what is it an icon of, exactly?

Love them or loathe them, giant cruise ships are among the most remarkable success stories of the mass tourism age. In the mid-20th century, as commercial airplanes supplanted boats as the main mode of long-distance transportation, passenger shipping lines fell into steep decline. Cruising was initially a small-scale and ponderous pastime: Ships would dock at ports of call for several days and cater to a clientele that had both time and money. Then Ted Arison, the scion of an Israeli shipping family, flipped the industry on its head by asking: What if the boat itself was the destination?

In January 1972, Arison bought an old passenger liner and commissioned a hasty refit to provide space for onboard entertainment. Rechristened the Mardi Gras, the first Carnival cruise ship sailed out of Miami that March. The modern cruising industry was born.

Today, cruising includes river cruises, luxury special-interest journeys, and monthslong expeditions to some of the most remote maritime environments in the world. But what most people think of are the massive ships that followed in the Mardi Gras' wake: a vacation on the water. A boat like the Icon will spend the vast majority of its seven-day itinerary at sea, docking at only two or three ports along the way.

In the decades after the Mardi Gras' inaugural journey, the annual cruise-passenger load grew exponentially — from 500,000 in 1970 to nearly 30 million in 2019. The Port of Miami, "Cruise Capital of the World," went from processing 61,000 passengers in 1950 to nearly 68,000 passengers in a single day in 2023.

carnival cruise ship mardi gras tour

This expansion has pushed through some formidable bow waves. In 2012, the Costa Concordia made worldwide headlines when it foundered off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, killing 32 people. Eight years later, cruise ships such as the Diamond Princess became early incubators for COVID-19. By summer 2020, Carnival was hemorrhaging $1 billion a month . As the borders reopened, the speed of the industry's recovery has been startling. Passenger numbers surged past 2019 levels last year.

"This week, in January, would typically be very quiet," Aaron Saunders, a senior editor at the cruising-review site Cruise Critic, told me earlier this month. He was calling from the Golden Jubilee lounge of the Carnival Celebration, the largest vessel in Carnival's fleet (it has a roller coaster on deck). "But this ship is entirely sold out," he said. "We've never seen ships this consistently full."

More than anyone, repeat cruisers have fueled the bounce back. In a December 2022 survey by the Cruise Lines International Association , 85% of passengers said that they would cruise again. The appeal was clear: In CLIA surveys, people said cruises were easier to arrange, more relaxing, and more "pampering" than other holidays. People also coveted the variety of destinations and activities.

"Twenty years ago, the entertainment was extremely limited compared to what you have now," Sue Bryant, a veteran cruise journalist and editor, told me. "When the first ship introduced a climbing wall, it was considered outrageously revolutionary. Now you've got zip lines, water slides, and musical shows from Broadway and the West End. The product is always improving."

While overseas travel has become freighted with anxiety post-pandemic, a cruise ship, by contrast, is the ultimate contained environment — convenient, predictable, and hassle-free.

But perhaps the most surprising feature of this surging popularity is how much of it is also being driven by younger travelers. Data recently compiled by researchers at CivicScience showed that 69% of 18- to 24-year-olds were at least "somewhat interested" in going on a cruise, the highest level of any age group. At the time of writing, videos of life aboard another Royal Caribbean ship, the Serenade of the Seas, six weeks into a nine-month Ultimate World Cruise , had become a viral sensation. Posts with the hashtag #ultimateworldcruise, most of them created by millennial and Gen Z influencers, had accrued over 350 million views on TikTok alone.

As the industry casts off outdated clichés of retirees, shuffleboard, and black-tie dining, some companies have gone all out for the young-adult market. Virgin Voyages , which debuted in 2021 with the promise to "sail our ships with sass," has a no-kids policy and boasts onboard amenities — such as brunch bars, Peloton classes, and resident drag performers — tailored to a young customer base.

"Some people think that cruises are all about partying. Others have an idea that cruises are formal, all about ballroom dancing," Emma Le Teace, a cruise writer and YouTuber, said. "Both these options do exist. But young customers are realizing that there are hundreds of options in between."

Crucially, in a period of high inflation, all these perceived upsides are available for controlled costs. The standard cruise package is all-inclusive. Though alcohol and off-ship excursions tend to cost extra , a person can, in theory, spend a week on board without spending another dollar.

All this is why, for millions of repeat customers, cruising is the best and only way to travel.

A week on a giant floating resort will never be for everyone. For the writer David Foster Wallace, in his famous 1991 essay for Harper's, there was "something about a mass-market Luxury Cruise that's unbearably sad." Three decades later, many of the characteristics that ensure cruising's popularity and profitability are the same ones that burden it with ethical ballast.

The modern cruise industry is dominated by the company Arison founded, Carnival, which owns almost half the entire global market, and Royal Caribbean, of which the Icon of the Seas is the latest flagship. Both companies are headquartered in Miami, but their vessels sail under what's known in maritime parlance as "flags of convenience." To bypass strict American regulations and high taxes, companies register their ships to a foreign country. Carnival, for instance, is flagged to Panama, Royal Caribbean to the Bahamas. Originally pioneered by passenger-ship companies seeking to sell booze during Prohibition, today this tactic has enabled cruise lines to sidestep stringent labor laws. Low-ranking employees on large cruise ships, often from low-income countries, have reported working long hours for below minimum wage, while enjoying few, if any, employment benefits. (One former cruise worker recently told Business Insider that he knew of colleagues working for as little as $2 an hour.)

But a perhaps greater contention is the industry's immense environmental impact . In common with most large oceangoing vessels, cruise ships have traditionally been powered by heavy fuel oil, a viscous diesel that tends to be the cheapest — read: dirtiest — fuel available. When burned, it emits prodigious quantities of CO2, as well as toxic particulates that contaminate the air and water. A 2019 study by Transport & Environment, a Brussels nongovernmental organization, found that Carnival's European fleet emitted 10 times as much sulfur oxide, a pollutant that has been proved to harm the human respiratory system, as all the continent's 260 million passenger vehicles combined.

Cruise lines insist that a greener future is viable. Carnival has committed to halve its carbon emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. Royal Caribbean promises a net-zero ship by 2035. But many climate experts say that the "transitional" mitigations are nowhere near adequate. Liquefied natural gas, which powers most new cruise ships, including the 90,000-horsepower engines on the Icon, emits about 25% less CO2 than conventional marine fuels, but it generates methane , a particularly potent greenhouse gas.

Friends of the Earth's latest Cruise Ship Report Card, which scores major lines on metrics including air-pollution reduction, water-quality compliance, and transparency, gave both Carnival and Royal Caribbean yet another F.

"Cruise-ship greenhouse-gas emissions grew more than 20% between 2012 and 2018," Bryan Comer, the director of the International Council on Clean Transportation's marine program, told me. The only way to bring that down, he said, is through "mandatory, enforceable regulations."

For anti-cruise activists, the wider climate crisis has become a rallying point. In October, when the World Traveller, a luxury cruise ship often assigned to the polar regions, arrived in the French port of Douarnenez, it was booed by a crowd of protesters, some dressed as walruses and polar bears. Anti-cruise sentiment has begun to carry over into restrictive legislation. Several major cruise ports , including Venice, Italy; Dubrovnik, Croatia; and Amsterdam, have introduced prohibitions and levied new taxes on passengers.

Cruise passengers learn to be suspicious of anything outside of their cruise bubble. They don't want to see anything that's ugly. They don't want to see anything that's real. Karla Hart, founder of the Global Cruise Activist Network

But many campaigners remain unsatisfied. "The big cruise companies are playing three-dimensional chess, while the local governments play checkers," Karla Hart, the founder of the Global Cruise Activist Network, told me.

Hart, whose hometown of Juneau, Alaska, is a summer cruise hub, said the industry had an ignominious history of environmental violations and of leveraging flags of convenience, clever marketing, and political clout to get its way. "They're very good at spinning the story to make themselves look better. But greenwashing and obfuscation are ingrained in the corporate culture," she added.

Despite their notoriety, boats such as the Icon are few in number. Cruise Market Watch forecasts there will be 360 cruise ships in service at the end of this year, comprising less than 1% of the global commercial fleet. But they're a conspicuous target. "It's easy to point a finger at the ship in the harbor and say there's our problem. It's a lot harder to get angry about the 37 flights a day that are arriving from all over the world," Saunders, the cruise critic, said.

While many port residents decry the ships' disruptive impact, others vaunt them as economically indispensable. In April, when ships returned to Skagway, Alaska, after a long COVID-19 hiatus, reports described store owners weeping with relief.

Meanwhile, ongoing calls for ships to be proscribed risk precipitating a vicious cycle in which cruise companies, ostracized at traditional ports, merely reroute to their coastal concessions. Both of the routes traveled by the Icon of the Seas include a stop off at Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , in the Bahamas.

A lot of the discourse boils down to cruise ships' arresting optics. The industry's tendency toward gigantism is partly about economies of scale — it's more cost-effective to squeeze as many passengers as possible onto one large ship than many small ships — but it's also an arms race designed to polarize and provoke. "That stern is such a departure from anything that has ever been created on a ship before," Saunders said, referring to the Icon's eye-catching rear end. "It was always going to stir the pot."

To detractors, the fact that each new incarnation of megaship seems to aspire to more , adding entrées to an already stuffed menu, can seem symbolic of an impatient, gluttonous, and superficial age — the perfect holiday for a society that demands constant diversion. "Cruise passengers learn to be suspicious of anything outside of their cruise bubble. They don't want to see anything that's ugly. They don't want to see anything that's real," Hart said. Her house often shakes from helicopter excursions carrying cruise passengers to Juneau's shrinking ice fields. "These trips are sold as 'once in a lifetime' opportunities," she added, "but it's basically a theme-park experience offered by companies that are trying to empty your wallet."

But the same resort-style product that repels some people proves irresistible to others, for whom a boat like the Icon is a kind of fantasy. While overseas travel has become freighted with anxiety post-pandemic, a cruise ship, by contrast, is the ultimate contained environment — convenient, predictable, and hassle-free. From the moment of boarding, a passenger is insulated from the variables and complexities of traveling in a foreign place. The food and drink are always flowing. Your luggage is never far away. The entertainment runs 24/7. Adrift on a parallel world of rest and recreation, the ships take you away from terrestrial concerns and, by extension, away from moral scruples.

If cruising is an industry that has long benefited from loopholes in maritime law, then today it also benefits from something else: a loophole in consumer conscience.

Carnival cruise ship rescues two men stranded in kayak off Mexico coast

A Carnival Cruise Line ship rescued two people stranded in a kayak on Monday.

Carnival Jubilee’s crew discovered the two men off the coast of Mexico’s Isla Mujeres. The pair said they had been using the kayak to stay afloat after their boat sank.

“They were welcomed onto the ship safely and were evaluated by the ship’s medical staff and given first aid and food,” the cruise line said in a news release . Carnival spokesperson Matt Lupoli did not have additional details about who the men were.

“The ship’s team and Carnival’s Fleet Operation Center staff in Miami kept in close contact with Mexican Navy officials and arranged a transfer, which was completed shortly after the rescue,” the release continued.

Jubilee, the newest ship in Carnival’s fleet , is currently sailing a week-long Western Caribbean itinerary, according to CruiseMapper . The cruise left from Galveston, Texas on Saturday.

The ship continued on its planned route, with a scheduled stop at Mahogany Bay in Roatan, Honduras on Tuesday, the cruise line said.

The news comes after another Carnival Vista rescued six men near the Dominican Republic last month after their small cargo vessel capsized. The line’s Mardi Gras ship also rescued a couple stranded in a sailboat in August.

How to delete your Instagram account

Tap Account Center and a menu will appear showing you the singular or multiple profiles you manage and all the tools on one page. Instead of selecting “Personal details” as you would on a mobile device, tap “Your information and permissions,” which will open up three drop-down menus, one of which reads “Deactivation or deletion.” Tap and then select the profile you want to deactivate or delete, then select which action you want to proceed with. Either way, you will be prompted to write your password for that profile if you select to deactivate or delete the account. Finally, you will need to select a reason for deleting or deactivating the account, and then you’re done. Once you select the reason, for a second time, Instagram will ask you to confirm deletion and give you a date that your account details will be permanently deleted off of the platform. Again, after your request goes through, it can take Meta up to 30 days to delete the account and affiliated information permanently. Meta does warn that during the 30 days pass, your content will remain subject to Instagram’s privacy policy, but your information and profile will not be accessible to other people using Instagram. It also is worth noting that it can take up to 90 days for the deletion process to finish after it gets initiated. So if you're really trying to disappear, it could take a while.
