Bike Tour in Azores - Cycling Holidays in São Miguel

Highlights:.

A Bike tour in the Azores archipelago, voted best island destination of the world by National Geographic and located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, halfway between Europe and the USA. The 9 Azores Islands are the result of the outpouring of lava from the ocean floor, as it stands on the ridge between the tectonic plates of Eurasia and North America. Its sub-tropical climate, evergreen fields with luxuriant pastures, flowers, endemic flora and fauna make it a great destination for cycling enthusiasts who want to embark in a challenging adventure in one of the most unique and quaint destinations in the world. Cycling the island of São Miguel, the Azores’ biggest and most renowned island, you’ll ride in immensely scenic and great condition asphalt roads, passing by extinct volcanoes, lagoons, tropical forests, thermal and hot sulfur springs, climbing to viewpoints in Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo and relaxing in the best hotels and thermal resorts in São Miguel. Ride through the unspoilt natural beauty of this “garden” that sits in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Climb to the top of the volcanoes to be amazed by views of the Fogo and Sete Cidades lagoons. This island of eternal green vegetation, endemic flora and big ocean mammals, some of which can only be seen here in the Azores. These include various unique species of whales and plant life that attract many zoologists, marine biologists and botanists from all parts of the world. Experience the tremendous variety of landscape, from the mild sunny beaches on the south coast, the green pastures of the central plateau, the rugged coastline of the north, the sub-tropical forests, the harsher volcano peaks of Fogo and Sete Cidades, the sulfur thermal hot springs, the tea plantations, to the alpine views inside the twin lagoons at Sete Cidades. Go on a whale watch tour, be flabbergasted by the size and majesty of sperm and blue whales, walk the trails along the volcanoes, the lagoons and hot springs, surrounded by the deep blue color of the ocean and the almost fluorescent green of the pastures and forested areas. With its trademark gastronomy, based on the tender meats and stews, the amazing fresh fish and seafood that are abundant in this part of the Ocean, as well as the surprisingly good white wines, local cheese and sweet pastries.

Having a Whale of a Time

Our guides will greet you at the pre-tour hotel in Ponta Delgada. We begin the week aboard a boat in search of dolphins. If we’re lucky, we may even spot a sperm whale; our local guide is a marine biologist who sheds light on these aquatic residents of the Atlantic (and a few visiting species, too). Back on land, enjoy a light lunch of local flavors before a bike fitting and safety review. Our first ride leads us out of the city on a bike path that follows the shoreline to Vila Franca do Campo. The town of Vila Franca was the original capital of São Miguel until it was destroyed by an earthquake (and subsequent landslide) in 1522—today, it’s prospering once again thanks to banana plantations and the fishing industry. After a coffee break, continue riding to our first hotel nestled in the volcanic village of Furnas, or transfer by van. Tonight, we dine together at the hotel’s restaurant.

Meals : Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Ponta Delgada, Vila Franca do Campo, Furnas Accomplished : 16 miles / 26 km, elevation gain: 1,253 feet / 382 meters Longer Option : 29 miles / 47 km, elevation gain: 3,044 feet / 928 meters Accommodations :  Octant Furnas

Fumaroles and Furnas Stew

After a breakfast of island-grown fruit, Azorean tea, and bolo levedo (an airy Azorean muffin) we’ll be properly fueled for a spin around the volcanic caldera of Furnas. Since the day’s theme is all things volcanic, our midday meal in the local village is São Miguel’s most famous dish: Cozido das Furnas , a stew cooked by volcanic steam in an underground oven. For those who wish to explore the area on foot, take an optional hike around the volcano’s geologic features—trek past gurgling springs of steaming hot water and Furnas Lake before finishing at the steaming fumaroles. Or stroll over to the hotel and spend the rest of the afternoon at the spa. Tonight’s dinner is a nourishing feast of locally caught seafood and vibrant salads at a family-run restaurant.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Furnas Accomplished : 22 miles / 35 km, elevation gain: 2,375 feet / 724 meters Longer Option : 5 miles / 8 km hiking Accommodations :  Octant Furnas

The East Coast Road

This morning, begin riding from the hotel or transfer to a starting point further down the road—either way, we’re embarking on an epic loop ride along the island’s eastern coastline. Described by DuViners as one of the most beautiful rides of their lives, the roads are lined with subtropical forests, blooming azaleas, blue hydrangeas, and fragrant Belladonna lilies. We’ll pass the waterfalls at Caldeirões Natural Park and pause at lookout points over the Atlantic, imagining the 15th-century sailors who also gazed eastward towards mainland Portugal. Weather permitting, break for a picnic lunch prepared by your guides. Hop in the van after lunch, or keep riding right to the mouth of the volcano and into the caldera before looping back to the hotel. This evening, dine on your own in the village of Furnas—our guides can readily recommend a few favorite restaurants.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch Destinations: Furnas, Provoação, Nordeste, Achadinha Accomplished: 28 miles / 45 km, elevation gain: 2,696 feet / 822 meters Longer Option: 56 miles / 90 km, elevation gain: 6,485 feet / 1,977 meters Accommodations :  Octant Furnas

Le Tour du Tea

First planted on São Miguel in the 16th century, oranges were the island’s principal export until 1842 when a blight wiped out the industry. It was a watershed moment that led to economic reinvention: dairy farming became a new mainstay, and crops like pineapples, passionfruit, tobacco, and tea also thrived. This morning, we’ll take a short transfer to see one of the island’s “new” trades: one of Europe’s only tea plantations. Since the last quarter of the 19th century, the Porto Formoso Tea Factory is one of two plantations in all of Europe that continues to produce commercially. Enjoy a fascinating history lesson and a refreshing cup of tea on the terrace overlooking the plantation. Then start riding west along the coast, passing through fishing villages en route to a lunch of chicken in piri-piri sauce. We’ll cross from the north side of the island to the south and check in to our next hotel with time for poolside cocktails or an afternoon massage. This evening, meet our friend and sommelier Joao for a masterclass in Azorean wines and dine on an organic feast.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Ribeira Grande, Fenais da Luz, Mosteiros Accomplished: 32 miles / 51 km, elevation gain: 2,404 feet / 733 meters Longer Option : 42 miles / 68 km, elevation gain: 3,480 feet / 1,061 meters Accommodations: Sensi  or  Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach Resort

Sete Cidades

Today’s route starts with Sete Cidades, the island’s enigmatic volcano which derives its name from a folk story about star-crossed lovers. Start riding from the hotel before a steady climb up its southern slope until we reach the Vista do Rei, a lookout point with magnificent views of the lakes and village below. Descend into Sete Cidades for a coffee break, then choose to catch a lift back to the hotel or spend your last full day in the saddle. For those who wish to keep riding, we’ll climb to the top of the crater for some spectacular ocean views, followed by a glorious downhill that brings us along the coastal road. This picture-perfect ride finishes at our hotel with a light lunch. Tonight we meet for an apéritif heading to a restaurant lovingly adorned with antiques from the owners’ past life in Macao. Our memorable final meal features sustainable and locally sourced ingredients paired thoughtfully with wines from the Azorean island of Pico.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Sete Cidades, Ginetes Accomplished: 24 miles / 38 km, elevation gain: 2,568 feet / 783 meters Shorter Option : 16 miles / 26 km, elevation gain: 2,020 feet / 616 meters Accommodations: Sensi  or  Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach Resort

Adeus São Miguel

Your guides will transfer you back to the island capital of Ponta Delgada. You may wish to stay a little longer in order to experience São Miguel a few other ways—perhaps diving, hiking, or golfing.

Travelers Take Note

The Azores is an emerging destination, which is a key part of its charm and appeal. As a result, local service at boutique-style hotels may be more relaxed, on par with the overall disposition of the island.

The Azorean islands enjoy a year-round mild climate. However, hour-by-hour weather can be unpredictable—it’s said that all four seasons are sometimes seen in a single day. Therefore, the itinerary as planned may be subject to change depending on weather conditions, and we recommend dressing in layers.

When packing swimwear for use in natural volcanic pools, choose something that is disposable or replaceable. The high iron oxide content may discolor or stain swimsuits. We also suggest that you pack a sturdy pair of sneakers.

Due to limited bike availability in this destination, guests will be asked to provide bike information and requests upon booking.

Azores Bike Tours

Bicycle the Azores with ExperiencePlus

The Azores, an archipelago of nine islands situated in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, have long held a position of strategic and cultural importance, in part shaping Portugal’s global influence.

Historically, their location made them pivotal for explorers, merchants, and navies, acting as a vital respite and provisioning point during the Age of Exploration. Portuguese explorers, particularly under the auspices of Prince Henry the Navigator in the 15th century, used the Azores as a stepping stone, furthering maritime exploration and the establishment of trade routes, including the slave trade, to Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

As a result, the islands became a melting pot, absorbing influences from Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Over the centuries, the Azores have cultivated and maintained a distinct identity, characterized by a deep connection to the sea. Set against the backdrop of volcanic landscapes, lush green pastures, and azure waters, a bicycle tour here will remind you that there are pockets of the world that although small, they have been extremely important in shaping and globalizing the world.

TOUR ITINERARY

Warm up walk in caloura.

Meet your guides at your Hotel in Ponta Delgada or Ponta Delgada Airport and transfer to our 16th century Convento de São Francisco Hotel in the fishing village of Vila Franca do Campo.

The town of Vila Franca was the original capital of São Miguel until it was destroyed by an earthquake, in the 1500’s. Today we will hike in Caloura area, this is the place where locals have their summer residences and the place for scuba divers. Our short hike ziguezagues along the coast and through the village beautiful houses and gardens. There are plenty of view points facing the deep blue Atlantic. Bring your swim gear if you fancy a deep in the ocean.

  • Meals : Picnic Lunch / Dinner
  • Destinations : Vila Franca do Campo
  • Accomplished : 5 km hike, elevation gain: 180 meters
  • Accommodations : Convento de São Francisco

Spending two nights at Hotel Octant Furnas will allow you to enjoy the contemporary architecture blending with the unique natural beauty. After the ride we will explore the highest concentration of hot springs in Europe.

Relax in a walk through the botanical garden adjacent to the Hotel, a peaceful oasis filled with meandering trails, exotic species, lakes with water lilies and a Camellia garden.

SECLUDED FOREST ROAD AND OCEAN VIEWS

Today we challenge ourselves in a loop ride to one of the most secluded areas of the island and habitat for Priolo, an endangered bird endemic to São Miguel island.

We’ll take in the panoramic views along a secluded forest road, native vegetation, as we traverse from the rugged interior to the northeast.

The roads are lined with subtropical forests, blooming azaleas, blue hydrangeas, and fragrant wild roses. The return route passes through numerous viewpoints over the Atlantic and the town of Povoação, the first area to be populated on the island.

The thermal hot-water pool at the hotel is a welcome leg balm at the end of the ride!

  • Meals : Breakfast / Lunch
  • Accomplished : 37 km, elevation gain: 850 meters
  • Longer option : 77 km, elevation gain 1530m
  • Accommodations : Hotel Furnas Octant

EUROPE’S ONLY TEA PLANTATION

Ride to the North Coast, past fishing villages, beaches and windmills. Oranges were introduced to the island in the 16th century, and became the main export until a plague wiped out the production in the 1800’s. As a response, dairy farming increased and crops like pineapples, passionfruit, tobacco, and tea were introduced.

This morning, we’ll take a look at one of the island’s “new” trades, riding north to Europe’s only tea plantation that continues to produce organic tea as it always has.

Ribeira Grande is known to host a stage of the World Surfing Championships, take some time to enjoy the ocean views. This evening we’ll take you to our favorite restaurant in the north shore to taste the freshest seafood harvested a few hours ago.

  • Meals : Breakfast / Dinner
  • Destinations : Ribeira Grande
  • Accomplished : 34 km, elevation gain: 710 meters
  • Longer option : 73km, elevation gain 1230m
  • Accommodations : Hotel Pedras do Mar

RIDE AND HIKE THE FIRE VOLCANO

Today choose to stay at the hotel pool, by the ocean, or ride up to the Fire Volcano. The ride takes us to the rim of the volcano, from where we swap our cycling shoes to hiking shoes and take the serpentine single track trail down to the lake. Afterwards enjoy a light picnic and a fantastic downhill to the coast.

  • Accomplished : 39 km, elevation gain: 490 meters

THE TWIN LAKES

Today’s route covers a big section of the coast line and the not less fantastic twin lakes.

We follow the coast along the hydrangea-laden roads to Sete Cidades Lagoon – one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal – where you will see yourself cycling along the crater rim with views of the sea and the famous lagoons. A good spot for our picnic. From here, you may choose to call it a day and hop in the van.

For those who wish to keep riding, once we pass the Portal do Vento there will be a long and phenomenal descent to Ponta Delgada.

Tonight´s dinner celebrates the contemporary Azorean cuisine at its best!

  • Meals : Breakfast / Picnic Lunch /Dinner
  • Destinations : Ponta Delgada
  • Accomplished : 66 km, elevation gain: 1190 meters

Why choose to ride the Azores?

Three quarters of the way across the Atlantic ocean between New York and Lisbon, lies the archipelago known as the Azores. A rugged and dramatic landscape of volcanoes, cliffs and valleys. Time slows down here: the locals count it in hundreds of thousands of years, in terms of the volcanoes that together have formed the Azores. Being at the junction of the Eurasian, North American and African tectonic plates, the Azores are a geological hotspot where the vegetation is lush all year round and the slopes of an alpine greenery are dotted with fat spotted cows.

The islands’ beauty is rare, and timeless; the volcanoes bring to mind the Miocene epoch, but in human terms there is a sense of 1950s-era innocence. The continuing restless volcanic activity seems to fill you with radiant energy and the salty, clean winds treat you to the world’s best free facials. Our route on the lush island of São Miguel, the largest in the archipelago, embraces cliffs along the coast as well as protected forest hills, providing challenging and very rewarding cycling and hiking. We will spend a week exploring the island’s natural beauty: Furnas Valley, a lush valley filled with volcanic fumaroles and natural mineral springs; the tranquil beaches and picturesque fishing villages along the coast; and a botanical garden with diverse flora from around the world.

You will walk inside volcanoes, and around them, and cycle along empty roads fringed with millions of azaleas and hydrangeas. It is hard to imagine a place better suited to nature lovers, fans of adventure sports, or anyone looking for a beacon of sustainability.

Six of the Best Cycling Routes in the Azores

Exploring the Azores’ exciting volcanic landscapes by mountain or road bike is a unique and exhilarating experience. Here are six of the best routes to follow…

mountain biking in the azores credit ata web

The Azores islands boast an abundance of bike trails ideal for all levels, giving riders the chance to revel in the fascinating nature and unusual volcanic terrain all around.

From ultra-technical single tracks which connect mountains, beaches and fajãs to roads circling lakes and mountain ranges which flourish with plant and bird life, the Azorean islands offer a mountain biking experience for every taste and skill level. If you’re a mountain biker, there’s a vast network of enduro trails criss-crossing the islands of Sao Miguel and Santa Maria.

If you would rather bike on the road, the islands also provide a large road network flanked by hydrangeas and Japanese cedars. These roads connect some of the Azores' most breath-taking landscapes and unlock insights into the islands' culture and villages.

And after a long day in the saddle you can cool off at one of the archipelago’s many bathing sites, natural warm water baths, in tidal pools or the ocean.

Tour of Stª Maria

Island: Santa Maria Distance: 52.77km Time: 3hrs Difficulty: Medium

This circular road bike tour begins and ends at the Largo Nossa Senhora da Conceição square and shows off the exciting contours of 'the Yellow Island', also known as the Island of the Sun. Santa Maria is also an island of two halves - a lower, flatter area, where the airport and the town of Vila do Porto sit, and a hilly area, featuring more luxuriant vegetation and the Pico Alto, which offers fantastic panoramic views. After the final climb, have a rest at the pool at Pedreira, and regain your energy.

Highlight: The viewpoints overlooking Praia Formosa beach and the sweep of São Lourenço Bay.

Volta ao Concelho

Island: São Miguel Distance: 91.2km Time : 4-5hrs Difficulty: Hard

A circular road-bike tour of the east end of the Green Island and the largest of the nine Azores. One of the highlights of this extensive ride is the descent to the Lagoa das Sete Cidades, a large lake nestled in a huge volcanic crater, and one of the most iconic features of São Miguel. Factor in a stop at the viewpoint of Cumeeiras, overlooking the Mosteiros, and after skipping through the island's northern parishes make more time for a stop at Areais de St Bárbara beach.

Highlight: Sete Cidades. One of the best-loved spots in the Azores.

Pico Grande

Island: São Miguel Distance: 1.73km Time: 6-8mins Difficulty: Hard

Enduro descents are very popular in the Azores, and this - with its 360m vertical - is the best-known trail in this area. It begins on a wide, fast dirt track, and becomes more difficult as the track narrows, and you enter a section with a gap followed by a sequence of four jumps. Before the last jump there is a sloping rock garden. After this section the trail is flatter and smoother, before rising gradually towards the end. This last part has a stone surface with long straight stretches linked by three zones of hairpin bends, before the trail ends in the area of Burguete.

Highlight: The jumps!

Pico Granfondo

Island: Pico Distance: 144km Time: 6-7hrs Difficulty: Tough

Beginning and ending in Madalena town, this is as challenging as you want for a panoramic road circuit of the Grey Island that is home to Portugal's highest mountain, the volcano Mt Pico. And though you don't climb the peak itself, the route does include a lactate-guzzling climb of just over 15km in the shadow of Mt Pico, getting up to the tour's high point of 931m.

There is also a tricky descent to the town of São Roque, where you will need to stand on the brakes to avoid going too fast. After this point you can have a break at the bathing area on the quay of São Roque, where there is a Whaling Museum, and a restaurant and bar area, before the long ride home along the south coast.

Highlight: The views from the top.

Interior Sete Cidades

Island: São Miguel Distance: 15.6km Time: 1hr Difficulty: Easy

If the tricky Enduro descents that criss-cross these islands are not your thing, this undulating ride along the shores of the beautiful Blue Lake and the forested trails of its smaller neighbour the Lago Verde, both cupped in the crater of Sete Cidades, gets you up close to this spectacular island beauty spot. There are even a couple of delightful picnic spots to stop off at.

Highlight: The tranquillity of the lakeside settings.

Volta à Ilha Terceira

Island: Terceira Distance: 80.4km Time: 4-5hrs Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult

This complete road circuit of the beautiful 'Purple Island' starts and ends in the historical centre of Angra do Heroísmo; a network of beautifully preserved streets, alleys, churches, palaces, manor houses, monuments, squares and gardens, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-visit location.

The round-island route includes several climbs including one testing ascent up to the vantage point at the Raminho headland, where not only can you observe the coast of Terceira but also the other islands in the central group: Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial. Worthwhile pit-stops include the wine museum in Biscoitos and the crystal-clear waters of Praia da Vitória beach.

Highlight: stunning views and wonderful landscapes.

The pink island

The undulating central massif of volcanic origin dominates the whole landscape. Cones with smooth slopes rise from the top of this plateau, where craters with sharp, rocky walls have been transformed in lakes. These are the remains of a once rebellious Nature that now welcomes visitors with kindness. From the summit of the hill Morro Alto , one can see an intense green ocean where the native laurissilva forest is still present. Among the intense greens of the vegetation, there are outstanding waterfalls and streams that water a natural garden of colourful flowers, where the pink of the azaleas and hydrangeas stands out.

Volcanic Landscape

Craters, lakes and streams dot the landscape of Flores. The water of the streams flows either lazily at the surface in the central plateau or quickly at the waterfalls and along the long, deep valleys. And before reaching the ocean, it is still powerful enough to move the turbines at the island’s several hydroelectric power stations.

The island features seven volcanic craters that have changed into beautiful lakes. Despite being very close to each other, the Caldeira Rasa and the Caldeira Funda , slightly to the south, are located at different heights. The luxuriant vegetation and the bunches of flowers on the slopes are the natural setting of the island. Nearly at the island’s centre, there are the craters: Caldeira Branca , Caldeira Seca , Caldeira Comprida , and Caldeira Negra (or Funda ), the latter with a depth of 105 metres and a special shade of blue. Isolated from the others, the Caldeira da Lomba is surrounded by a small hill and hydrangeas.

One of the most famous monuments of the Azores, the rock Rocha dos Bordões is made up by a large set of vertical basalt columns. The prismatic or columnar jointing resembles a pipe organ and stands out at the top of a hill. Covered by moss, lichen and other vegetation, the basaltic rock changes its colour throughout the day as if requesting our eternal return to this site.

More geological formations with peculiar shapes can also be seen at the hill Morro dos Frades , where some see on the rock the shadows of a friar and a nun. Even more symbolic, the Monchique Islet represents the westernmost piece of land of the European Continent. Seen from Vigia da Ponta Negra , close to the Albarnaz Lighthouse, this black rock puts a full stop to Europe and serves as a foreword for the discovery of an island and of an archipelago.

The area between Fajãzinha and Fajã Grande is one of the most beautiful coastlines of the Azores. Through the long green wall that borders this area, there are almost twenty waterfalls, with the one named Ribeira Grande standing out given its 300 metres height. At the foot of the cliff, there are several permanent puddles, such as the Poço do Bacalhau and the Poço da Alagoinha , which is also known as Lagoa dos Patos . A walk to the cliff provides you with the opportunity of enjoying from a close distance the waterfalls and the scenery that Nature has carved out, which is an invitation to contemplation and to a reinvigorating swim. There is the dark grey colour of the rock, the green of the luxuriant vegetation, the white from the foam and the crystal blue of the water that come together to offer a most prodigious view.

Countless islets, headlands, shoals, inlets, coastal caves, prismatic jointing, waterfalls, and impressive valleys are some of the particularities that the coastline of Flores has to offer. Adorning the high cliffs of the south coast, Fajã Nova at the Ponta da Rocha Alta and Fajã de Lopo Vaz can be reached through a walking trail carved along the cliff.

On the island’s north coast, the low and linear coastal cliff between Ponta Delgada and Ponta do Albarnaz gives way to the insurmountable terrain of the island’s northwest coast, which can only be crossed through walking trails, such as the one between the lighthouse at the Ponta do Albarnaz and the Ponta da Fajã . It is a difficult trail but it affords breathtaking views.

On the other hand, at the lava fajãs of Santa Cruz , Lajes and Fajã Grande , the sea softly embraces the low rocky tips of black lava, and on calm days, it highlights a glittering seafloor titillating with life.

The island of Flores is 16.6 km long and has 12.2 km at its maximum width, which translates into a surface of 141.4 sq. km. Together with the island of Corvo, which is 17.9 km away, it forms the Western Group of the Azores Archipelago. The European Continent has its westernmost point on this piece of land where 3 793 people live (2011 data). At an altitude of 911 metres, the Morro Alto is the island’s highest point and is located at 39°27’48’’ latitude north and 31°13’13’’ west.

Volcanic and Verdant

Azores - terceira island bike tours.

Terceira Island, an active volcanic island in the alluring Azores, is a spectacular paradise of fascinating geology. The dramatic landscapes of Terceira's rugged hills are best enjoyed on a guided bike tour that'll treat you to volcanic vistas, lush nature, and extra-special sandy beaches.

Formed of four overlapping stratovolcanoes over the Terceira Rift, Terceira Island built its villages from black volcanic stone. The majestic Monte Brazil was born of an eruption of basaltic lava in shallow water, creating the tuff cone that looms protectively over the harbor of Terceira's capital. Rich grasses grow over the caldera, and the azure ocean of the Azores contrasts magnificently with the emerald green of the island's covering.

Whether you’ve come to Terceira to capture panoramic pictures from the Picas, to venture onto the volcanic sands of Praia Vitória, or to go wild on the West Coast, you'll find a guided bicycle tour that ticks your boxes, with the added option of bike rental.

Enjoy an explosion of adrenaline in this verdant, volcanic paradise!
