apple update safari tabs

Apple has released a redesigned version of Safari for macOS Big Sur and Catalina. The update, announced as part of the upcoming macOS Monterey , was released the same day as iOS and iPadOS 15, bringing the web browser’s new look and features across Apple’s platforms.

To update to the new Safari 15, you can go to System Preferences > Software Update, where it should automatically refresh and show up. Unlike updates to macOS, you shouldn’t have to reboot your computer after updating Safari.

The development behind this version of Safari has been interesting. The full OS update that it was originally a part of, which also brings features like Universal Control and Quick Notes, isn’t here yet, but Apple decided to ship the new Safari anyway. For those who have upgraded to iOS 15 , that’s a good thing — it means that you can immediately use tab groups across all your devices. The update also includes features like better tracking protection and automatic switching to HTTPS for sites that support it.

Apple’s original vision for Safari 15, which has been toned down slightly over the beta period.

While the Safari update brings new features, it also brings a new design. Apple’s made several changes to it since it was announced (though not as many as it’s made to Safari for iPhone ), tweaking it to be less starkly minimal. Looks-wise, it’s still a major change from Safari 14, but there are preferences that you can tweak to walk back some of the more distracting changes. If you don’t want websites to be able to change the color of your tab bar, you can go to Safari’s preferences > Tabs, and uncheck “Show color in tab bar.” If you want your tabs to be on their own row, you can switch from Compact mode to Separate.

Unchecking “Automatically collapse tab titles into icons” turns the tab bar into a sort of carousel when you have too many of them. I certainly don’t prefer it, but it’s an option if that’s your sort of thing.

Unchecking the “automatically collapse tab titles” box hides the true chaos.

While Safari 15 takes a bit to get used to (I'm still getting over the learning curve myself), Tab Groups is a great feature to share between my iPhone and computer. Safari 15 also comes with the usual host of security updates , though none seem too severe. After you update, be sure to let us know what you think of the new design — is it a breath of fresh air or just another refresh that you’ll grudgingly get used to?

How to manage Safari tabs in iOS 15

Apple has revamped its Safari browser for iOS 15 , released on September 20. One of the most controversial new features of the new mobile browser version is a tab/address bar now located at the bottom of the screen, which appears when you browse web pages. While the bottom bar is the default layout, the final version of iOS 15 lets you reposition it back to the top of the screen, if you choose. Regardless of where the address bar is located, you will still handle tabs the same way.

New tab bar

Creating tab groups, bottom line.

Mobile Safari has adopted the style of the Safari Start Page, derived from the current MacOS 11 (Big Sur), letting you create tab groups that are accessible across all your Apple devices to make browsing a more seamless experience. The new iOS 15 Safari has a lot more functionality than the previous version, is even more connected across devices, offers more screen space dedicated to browsing, and supports browser extensions. It also relies on a series of nested menus and will take some getting used to.

Mobile Safari’s redesigned Start Page can display your Bookmarks, Favorites, Frequently Visited sites, Siri Suggestions, iCloud Tabs, Reading List, and Privacy Report. To see that, you will first need to go to Settings > Your Name > iCloud > Safari and toggle the control to On (the green position). The Edit button lets you customize which items appear on your Start Page and lets you add custom wallpaper or use another background from your Photos. If you sync the Start Page in iCloud, it will appear with the same content on all your devices. To get complete cross-device functionality, you must also have MacOS 12 (Monterey) — still in beta — installed on your computer. However, you can still do plenty with the final release of iOS 15 and MacOS 11 Big Sur, from which this example is derived.

A new tab bar sits at the bottom of the Start Page where Apple has consolidated multiple controls that are expedited by a long press or an icon tap. Tapping the tab bar URL moves it toward the middle of the screen, letting you search for a site or enter a web address. When you hit Go , the page loads and the tab bar sits back down at the bottom of the screen, providing an unobstructed view of the page. If the presence of the tab bar is too distracting on your small screen, you can swipe down to minimize it, but it automatically minimizes anyway as you scroll down a page, and all you have to do to reveal it again is tap.

Once you get the hang of the tab bar, there’s plenty more you can do with it. First, you can use the tabs icon at the bottom far right to access a tab switcher interface. From there, swiping across the bar between open tabs either to the left or right cycles through your open tabs. A long press on the tab bar brings up an action menu with options like Copy, Paste and Search, Voice Search, and Move to Tab Groups .

Tapping the Share icon gives you the share menu, but directly below it are numerous commands such as Add Bookmark, Add to Favorites, Add to Reading List , and more. The Edit Actions command at the bottom of the page menu lets you rearrange which controls you want to see at the top of the screen for ease of use.

In iOS 15, tabs are easy to find because they appear as vertically scrolling thumbnail previews. Tab groups let you save tabs and organize them according to classifications, topics, and categories to save you the trouble of swiping through many tabs to find a specific site.

After launching mobile Safari, tap on the Tabs icon. Then, tap the tabs arrow in the tab bar to access the menu to creates a new empty tab group, a new group with the tabs you currently have open, or a private tab group. If all your open tabs already are in one category, you can also choose New Tab Group from X Tabs,  name the tab group, and click OK . The tab group offers naming suggestions that are fairly sophisticated conceptual interpretations of the tabbed site content. If you have already named a tab group, you will see it listed in this menu and you can tap to switch between it and any other existing tabs. Independent open tabs are listed according to their number. The plus (+) icon in the Tab Switcher Bar opens a new tab. A tap-and-hold brings up your recently closed tabs.

A long press on a tab in the Tab Switcher offers additional commands like Close Other Tabs , Move to Tab Group , Arrange Tabs by Title , and Arrange Tabs by Website . A tab bar at the bottom of the screen lets you access tabs with your thumb. Users can also swipe between tabs, or swipe up for the grid view. Once you see all of your open tabs, choose which one you want to move to another group and long-press until you see a menu appear. On the menu, select Move to Tab Group and tap the group you created.

The new tab interface in Safari for iOS 15 has a slew of options to help you visually connect with websites for work and entertainment. It can get kind of dense, and will take some getting used to. But not only will you have more flexibility, but you can also move the address bar back up to the top if you really don’t like it at the bottom.

The Apple iPhone 15 finally brings with it Dynamic Island which we’ve only previously seen on the Pro range. It’s a real game changer at times and is very convenient. Alongside that, the Apple iPhone 15 has the Ceramic Shield front to keep it more protected while its 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display promises to be up to two times brighter than the iPhone 14 in the sun. There’s also a 48MP main camera with 2x telephoto lens to help you take great shots. The A16 Bionic chip has plenty of processing power to aid with software adjustments.

Skype is an excellent option for video chats with your friends and family or conducting a videoconference call with your colleagues.  However, Skype is not without its bugs, hiccups, and issues that can make getting face-to-face with someone seem like an ordeal. To make things easier on everyone, we've compiled a selection of the most common Skype problems and how to fix them. Video not working If you can't get your camera to work or experience issues seeing other's connections, you might as well be using an actual telephone instead of Skype. Thankfully, these issues can usually be resolved with a bit of tinkering on your end, or they may just be service disruptions on Skype's end.

One of the more common problems that crop up is visual issues due to Skype not having access to your PC or phone's camera. For desktop users, open the Skype application and select the Three horizontal dots near the notification bell icon to access the Skype menu. Select Settings > Audio and video. If your picture fails to appear in the Skype camera preview window, you'll know there's a connection issue.

Start page in Safari 15 for macOS

apple update safari tabs

Look and feel

Unlike years past where Apple has provided Safari with more under-the-hood changes, this year, the update is apparent with Safari taking on a fresh coat of paint. Visually, it looks cleaner and more compact than it did before.

Those changes all come to the redesigned unified search bar. Instead of splitting tabs into a top and bottom row, it is all crammed together into a single row. Tabs slide left to right, and when you select a tab, it becomes the combo URL/search box. By combining the active tab with the URL box, Apple has reduced the space requirements significantly.

Toolbar options for Safari 15

To help fit everything in, Apple employed a few other space-saving measures. Some buttons have been relocated behind an ellipsis in the URL box. You can tap the ellipsis for the share button, add to bookmarks/reading list option, and the reload button.

Moving the page reload button may cause some frustration, but it is still possible to use the keyboard shortcut CMD+R. That makes the button less critical, so hiding it behind the ellipsis will free up some much-needed space for most users. If you did routinely use the refresh button, Apple's repositioning is less than ideal.

Toolbar customization options for Safari 15

Fortunately, you can still customize the top bar. You can right-click the bar to bring up the customization option, and you can drag and drop the remaining toolbar items where you'd like them.

Safari's toolbar adjusting for AppleInsider (left), YouTube (center), and Apple (right)

Another neat feature of the toolbar is its ability to change color. When you visit different sites, the Safari toolbar will take on the color of any site you land on. When visiting AppleInsider, the toolbar takes on AppleInsider's dark blue. Visiting YouTube turns the bar white and visiting Apple's iPhone 12 Pro mini-site makes it black. This creates a more cohesive visual experience where the toolbar doesn't stand out.

Apple made a few modifications to the start page this year, most relating to syncing across your various devices. When you set your background for the start page, it can sync to any device you're signed in to with your Apple ID. Set it on your Mac and it will show on your iPad . This is a new toggle located within the settings icon in the lower-right corner of the start page.

That same menu has a toggle to display or hide iCloud tabs on the start page and a "Use Start Page on All Devices" option.

Tab Groups are arguably the most significant feature coming to Safari. The more we use them, the more we enjoy them. If you have a habit of opening a bunch of tabs at once, you likely will too.

Tab Groups in the toolbar

How it works is that you can group any tabs you have opened into different buckets. Create a group for your work tabs, create a group for relaxing, and create one with your financial or banking sites. Then you can jump between your groups as needed, keeping your toolbar clean and organized.

It can also help you focus if you don't have open tabs for Reddit or Twitter while you're trying to work and you don't have to see your work tabs while trying to kick back.

Redesigned Sidebar

You can jump between Tab Groups from the new toolbar option or do so from the redesigned sidebar. The sidebar used to be two tabs — one for bookmarks one for your reading list — but now it is a series of folders for both of those two categories as well as your Tab Groups.

A new Tab Group can be created on-demand at any time from that drop down in the toolbar. It can be an empty group or can be pre-populated with your current open tabs.

Quick Note integration

Creating a Quick Note

Quick Notes is another fantastic new feature that is coming to macOS Monterey as well as iPadOS 15 . It is a system-wide feature that allows you effortlessly create a note with contextually aware app links to make them even more useful. But Safari has its own specific ties to Quick Note.

The ellipsis in the toolbar features a button to generate a Quick Note. You can also create a Quick Note by highlighting a text block, right-clicking, and adding to a Quick Note.

A Quick Note returning

These are easy, and whenever you create a Quick Note with a link to a page, any time you revisit that page in Safari, your note will resurface in the lower-right corner.

Available in beta

The updated version of Safari will land this fall for most users, but you have a couple of options if you'd like to get an early look.

Developers can test macOS Monterey now, though this is strongly discouraged for non-developers and especially discouraged on your daily driver. Apple will be issuing a public beta in July, which is a better option for those eager to give it a try.

Safari Preview

Alternatively, Apple releases what it calls Safari Technology Previews. This is available now for users of macOS Big Sur. You can install Safari 15.0 on your Mac and it will install as a second app, alongside the existing public version of Safari. You can download the technology preview from Apple's mini site.

You will have both Safari 14 and Safari 15 Technology Preview on your Mac. You can test out the new features as much as you want, and if it gives you issues, switch back to the public build and remove the Technical Preview without having any risk.

Otherwise, sit back and be ready for a new Safari experience and much more coming soon.

An abomination. Cramming navigation controls, extensions, tabs and the search field into one bar results in tabs becoming quickly unrecognisable, whilst the full-address can nolonger be easily visualised to confirm its authenticity. That is plainly less functional. Furthermore, the colour-changing toolbar is a fail as either Safari controls become 'merged' with those of the current website, or they seem unnecessarily re-coloured when one scrolls down the page and the actual website header has disappeared from sight. Version 14 seemed to have finally hit a sweet spot, but Safari 15 is trashing sensible UI behaviour as was done with Finder., Alas, not only are they reversing usability themselves, by example Apple are encouraging third-party developers to do likewise.

multiple, cascading menus is not "clean". " The sidebar used to be two tabs -- one for bookmarks one for your reading list -- but now it is a series of folders for both of those two categories as well as your Tab Groups."  That's a weird sense of simplification when you trade "two" for "a  series of". " Another neat feature of the toolbar is its ability to change color."  Really? This is a "feature"?? Neat???  And all those pastel colors are giving me flashbacks to the days of leisure suits, rotating disco mirror lights, and other such "neat" things.   I could go on but I don't think it would be good for my blood pressure

How to close all your Safari tabs at once on iPhone

Do you have hundreds of open tabs in Safari on your iPhone? Stop closing them one-by-one and do this instead.

There are two types of iPhone users: those that religiously close out their Safari tabs and those that have hundreds of tabs open at any given moment. At some point, there comes a time when you need to clear out all of your open Safari tabs and declutter your browsing experience. It can be a pain to close out every single tab individually, but luckily you don't have to. In iOS 17, there's a hidden button that'll let you close out all the tabs in a given Tab Group simultaneously. If you've been manually closing out tabs, you need to learn this crucial iPhone trick for Safari.

iOS 17 review: The bubble is now greener on the other side

How to close tabs in safari on iphone.

Recent versions of Safari split up tabs into Tab Groups , and this is something to keep in mind when trying to clear all your tabs. All iPhone users will have at least two Tab Groups: Start Page and Private . If you've created custom Tab Groups — either on your iPhone or on a device synced with iCloud — you'll have to repeat the steps below for each Tab Group.

  • Open Safari on your iPhone.
  • Tap the Tabs button in the bottom right corner of the toolbar (it looks like two squares stacked on one another).
  • Press the X button to close an individual tab.
  • Hold the Done button and press Close all tabs to clear all your tabs simultaneously.

Why you should clear Safari tabs regularly

Safari won't let you open more than 500 tabs in a single Tab Group, so all iPhone users will have to close out old tabs eventually. However, there's a case to be made for closing Safari tabs far more frequently than that. Having minimal Safari tabs in a Tab Group can make it easier to go back and forth between the ones you really need. Plus, you may notice a slight performance benefit to running Safari with fewer tabs, although it isn't as big of a deal on the newest iPhones . Still, it's a pain to close out Safari tabs on iPhone individually, so using the hidden Close all tabs button is incredibly helpful.

iOS 18 could supercharge Safari with more than just Apple's AI features

Published on April 30, 2024

Apple iPhone 14 safari imessage

  • Safari on iOS 18 and macOS 15 may pack an AI-powered summarization feature that leverages an on-device LLM.
  • It may also include a new web content eraser, which would enable users to delete webpage elements and sections, such as ad banners.
  • Apple may upgrade Visual Look Up in 2025 to include support for identifying consumer products in images — not just pets, plants, and landmarks.

It’s no secret that iOS 18 will offer some major new features powered by artificial intelligence. In fact, Apple CEO Tim Cook explicitly stated that the company would be revealing its AI goods at some point this year. While the specifics of these AI upgrades are generally vague now, it appears that Safari on iOS 18 may pack some of them.

According to information obtained by AppleInsider , Safari on iOS 18 and macOS 15 will receive a major update. For starters, users may be able to rely on AI-enhanced browsing and text summarization, similar to what the Arc browser currently offers. The on-device Ajax large language model (LLM) would reportedly scan the text to identify the main topics and summarize web content accordingly.

Interestingly, Safari version 18 may also introduce a web eraser, allowing users to remove certain elements from the sites they’re browsing. It will reportedly support the removal of ad banners, images, text, and other sections, potentially sherlocking 1Blocker in the process. The best part is that Safari may remember what elements a user has erased, even after they close the tab or app. This would retain their preferred layouts per each modified site indefinitely.

Otherwise, Safari 18 on macOS 15 may also include an updated address bar UI that matches that of iPadOS. Through this design tweak, Apple would further streamline Safari’s user interface across its different operating systems.

The report also points to an upgraded Visual Look Up feature that may debut in 2025. If it comes to fruition, users will be able to identify consumer products in images across the different apps. For reference, Visual Look Up is currently limited to images of pets, plants, and landmarks.

It’s worth mentioning that Apple engineers are reportedly testing these features internally. So, naturally, there’s a chance that some (or all) of them won’t make it to the public iOS 18 and macOS 15 beta builds, let alone the stable releases. Ultimately, we will get a definite answer on June 10, when Apple officially previews iOS 18 and macOS 15 during the main WWDC24 keynote.

M4 enables the breakthrough design and stunning display of the new iPad Pro, while delivering a giant leap in performance

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today announced M4, the latest chip delivering phenomenal performance to the all-new iPad Pro . Built using second-generation 3-nanometer technology, M4 is a system on a chip (SoC) that advances the industry-leading power efficiency of Apple silicon and enables the incredibly thin design of iPad Pro. It also features an entirely new display engine to drive the stunning precision, color, and brightness of the breakthrough Ultra Retina XDR display on iPad Pro. A new CPU has up to 10 cores, while the new 10-core GPU builds on the next-generation GPU architecture introduced in M3, and brings Dynamic Caching, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and hardware-accelerated mesh shading to iPad for the first time. M4 has Apple’s fastest Neural Engine ever, capable of up to 38 trillion operations per second, which is faster than the neural processing unit of any AI PC today. Combined with faster memory bandwidth, along with next-generation machine learning (ML) accelerators in the CPU, and a high-performance GPU, M4 makes the new iPad Pro an outrageously powerful device for artificial intelligence.

“The new iPad Pro with M4 is a great example of how building best-in-class custom silicon enables breakthrough products,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies. “The power-efficient performance of M4, along with its new display engine, makes the thin design and game-changing display of iPad Pro possible, while fundamental improvements to the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, and memory system make M4 extremely well suited for the latest applications leveraging AI. Altogether, this new chip makes iPad Pro the most powerful device of its kind.”

Delivering a giant leap in performance over the previous iPad Pro with M2, M4 consists of 28 billion transistors built using a second-generation 3-nanometer technology that further advances the power efficiency of Apple silicon. M4 also features an entirely new display engine designed with pioneering technologies, enabling the stunning precision, color accuracy, and brightness uniformity of the Ultra Retina XDR display, a state-of-the-art display created by combining the light of two OLED panels.

M4 has a new up-to-10-core CPU consisting of up to four performance cores and now six efficiency cores. The next-generation cores feature improved branch prediction, with wider decode and execution engines for the performance cores, and a deeper execution engine for the efficiency cores. And both types of cores also feature enhanced, next-generation ML accelerators.

M4 delivers up to 1.5x faster CPU performance over the powerful M2 in the previous iPad Pro. 1 Whether working with complex orchestral music files in Logic Pro or adding highly demanding effects to 4K video in LumaFusion, M4 boosts performance across pro workflows.

The new 10-core GPU of M4 builds upon the next-generation graphics architecture of the M3 family of chips. It features Dynamic Caching, an Apple innovation that allocates local memory dynamically in hardware and in real time to dramatically increase the average utilization of the GPU. This significantly increases performance for the most demanding pro apps and games.

Hardware-accelerated ray tracing comes to iPad for the first time, and enables even more realistic shadows and reflections in games and other graphically rich experiences. Hardware-accelerated mesh shading is also built into the GPU, and delivers greater capability and efficiency in geometry processing, enabling more visually complex scenes in games and graphics-intensive apps. Pro rendering performance in apps like Octane gets a huge boost with M4, and is now up to four times faster than on M2. 1 With these improvements to the CPU and GPU, M4 maintains Apple silicon’s industry-leading performance per watt. M4 can deliver the same performance as M2 using just half the power. And compared with the latest PC chip in a thin and light laptop, M4 can deliver the same performance using just a fourth of the power. 2

M4 has a blazing-fast Neural Engine — an IP block in the chip dedicated to the acceleration of AI workloads. This is Apple’s most powerful Neural Engine ever, capable of an astounding 38 trillion operations per second — a breathtaking 60x faster than the first Neural Engine in A11 Bionic. Together with next-generation ML accelerators in the CPU, the high-performance GPU, and higher-bandwidth unified memory, the Neural Engine makes M4 an outrageously powerful chip for AI. And with AI features in iPadOS like Live Captions for real-time audio captions, and Visual Look Up, which identifies objects in video and photos, the new iPad Pro allows users to accomplish amazing AI tasks quickly and on device.

iPad Pro with M4 can easily isolate a subject from its background throughout a 4K video in Final Cut Pro with just a tap, and can automatically create musical notation in real time in StaffPad by simply listening to someone play the piano. And inference workloads can be done efficiently and privately while minimizing the impact on app memory, app responsiveness, and battery life. The Neural Engine in M4 is Apple’s most capable yet, and is more powerful than any neural processing unit in any AI PC today.

The Media Engine of M4 is the most advanced to come to iPad. In addition to supporting the most popular video codecs, like H.264, HEVC, and ProRes, it brings hardware acceleration for AV1 to iPad for the first time. Apple held its Let Loose event today to unveil the new iPads, hinting at a revival of the tablet market, as the industry hoped it might be. The iPad, as a product category, had a few rough quarters with sales slowing due to the lack of new iPads. Apple was once bullish on the iPad; however, the device didn’t go as far as Cupertino had hoped to see. Over the years, as the iPad matured, the lineup became more confusing. This made the iPad far from what it was originally meant to be.

Coming to the highlights of the event, the iPad Air has been introduced in two sizes, 11-inches and 13-inches. Alongside, Apple also introduced the iPad Pro which seems like a worthy competitor to top-tier laptops especially with its powerful M4 chipset.

The new iPad Pro which comes with the fastest chip is also introducing OLED technology which adds to an immersive experience for users. The new iPad Pros that promise exceptional performance are also the thinnest Apple products. The Pro models feature a new technology called TandemOLED, claimed to be the world’s most advanced display technology.

The tech giant also showcased a slew of updates to its Magic Keyboard and introduced the updated Apple Pencil Pro with some incredible capabilities.

Apple's “Let Loose” event will showcase new iPads as well as a brand new M4 chip. If the rumors are true, we’re going to get new iPad Pros with OLED screens and thinner bodies, new Airs with faster chips, and a couple of new accessories.

"...But the new iPad Pro announcements today have made it clear to me that I am no longer in the target group for this flagship tablet," Nandgopal Rajan says, explaining why he  is not so  enamoured  with the latest upgrade to the iPad Pro.

Apple Store Down

Shortly before the highly-anticipated 'Let Loose' event, Apple Store seems to have hit a downtime. Users flocking to the online portal reported that they saw the 'Be Right Back' message on the page. Software, not hardware, is what the iPad needs right now

When Apple CEO Tim Cook and top honchos take the virtual stage to introduce new iPads, they are going to spend a lot of time establishing one thing: the new iPads will be the best tablets on the market, especially the Pro models. One can already predict the script Cook and his team will be handed to make the pitch around newer iPads, including OLED screens and slimmer bodies, with the new Airs getting a bigger screen size, and updates to the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard. Why now is the right time for Apple to announce new iPads

The upcoming 'Let Loose' iPad event is strategically timed to revive Apple's tablet line, as it coincides with the 17% year-over-year decline in iPad revenues as reported in its Q2 2024 earnings. This shows the need for a substantial overhaul and not just a mere refresh. By hosting a standalone event—its first in many years focused on iPads—Apple is likely addressing the need to renew its tablet offerings and better position them against rising competitors like Microsoft, which is also upgrading its Surface devices. Can iPad Pro 2024 replace laptop?

Apple will soon unveil the iPad Pro. The latest device from the Cupertino-based tech giant is also rumoured to feature Apple's M4 chip according to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg. The device will also feature a 12.9-inch OLED display, a much-awaited upgrade. With the rumoured Magic Keyboard and updated Pencil, the iPad Pro may well work similarly to a MacBook. Although there have been many claiming the iPad Pro to be a potential replacement for laptops, we need to wait until Apple makes the big reveal. If not replace laptops, the iPad Pro could bridge the gap with its host enhancements making it comparable to top-tier laptops.

In this article, we write about our wishlist of features for the next iPad Pro. A Bay Area-based accessories company teases a slim messenger bag for the iPad

WaterField, a San Francisco-based company best known for backpacks, has launched a new slim messenger bag. The interesting part is that this messenger bag is marketed for those who are planning to buy the new iPads debuting later in the evening. The brand specifically states that the Shinjuku (that’s the bag's name) fits "Apple's new 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pros with M4 chips.” Available in lightweight, highly durable, water-resistant X-Pac Canvas or traditional waxed canvas, the Shinjuku comes in two sizes and three colors. They are available for $229 and $239, respectively. WaterField makes all of its bags in San Francisco, and they are built to last for years.

Accessories galore

A t the upcoming event, Apple is expected to showcase a new Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro along with the third version of the Apple Pencil which is likely to be named Pencil Pro. With the new set of accessories, Apple is expected to enhance the functionality of the iPad, making it versatile and radically different from conventional laptops. The new Magic Keyboard Pro will likely come with aluminium build and a bigger trackpad. Moreover, the new Pencil will likely feature swappable tips and haptic feedback, in a first.

A 'Pro' Apple Pencil?

We've heard about the name Apple Pencil 3 for months, but it appears that Cupertino may launch a pro version of the stylus instead. A code on Apple’s website in Japan mentions the “Apple Pencil Pro,” hinting that it might debut during the company’s iPad event on Tuesday. It makes sense if the Apple Pencil Pro works only with the high-end iPad Pro. Rumors suggest that a refreshed Apple Pencil could come with interchangeable magnetic tips, a squeeze gesture, and haptic feedback.

New AI Features Reportedly Coming to Safari in iOS 18

Safari will gain a series of AI-powered features and UI enhancements in iOS 18 , AppleInsider reports .

safari icon blue banner

  • An "Intelligent Search" browser assistant tool that leverages Apple's on-device AI technology to identify key topics and phrases on webpages for summarization purposes.
  • A "Web Eraser" tool that allows users to remove unwanted portions of webpages easily. Erasure is persistent, remaining even when revisiting a site unless changes are reverted.
  • A new, quick-access menu emerging from the address bar that consolidates page tools, bringing over some functions that currently sit in the Share Sheet and placing them alongside the new tools.

The iPadOS and macOS versions of Safari are also expected to align further. These new features are purportedly undergoing evaluation alongside internal builds of ‌iOS 18‌ and macOS 15 ahead of their unveiling at Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) in June. Earlier this month, backend code on Apple's servers suggested that a new Safari browsing assistant is in the works, corroborating this report.

Farther in the future, Apple is said to be working on a more powerful version of Visual Look Up that allows users to obtain information on products when browsing through images. The feature is expected to be released sometime in 2025.

Last week, Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman said that ‌iOS 18‌ will "overhaul" many of Apple's built-in apps , including Notes, Mail, Photos , and Fitness. Apple's next-generation operating systems are almost certain to be previewed during Apple's WWDC keynote on June 10, and the updates should be widely released in the fall.

Arc Search brings new widgets, Action button-capable voice search, and more tab controls

Avatar for Ryan Christoffel

Today, Arc Search , the iOS app from the Browser Company that debuted earlier this year , has been updated with three key feature improvements: widgets for your Home screen, Voice Search that can be triggered from an iPhone’s Action button, and handy new tab controls for controlling page zoom and requesting a desktop site.

All of these added conveniences aim to take the AI-focused search and web browsing tool to a new place of frequent engagement for users.

Quick-launching widgets, Voice Search, and tab toggles

Arc Search now offers small and medium-sized widgets to add to your Home screen. Each widget provides the same basic functionality: quick launching into a new Arc search field to start browsing, reopening your existing spaces, or initiating a Voice Search.

Voice Search is an entirely new Arc feature, and can be enabled quickly and conveniently not only from the widget, but also with a tap-and-hold of the plus button at the bottom of the app. Even better though for iPhone 15 Pro owners, Voice Search has been added as a new action to the Shortcuts app, meaning you can configure your iPhone’s Action button to kick off a quick voice search. This method offers just as much convenience as a press-and-hold of the Side button to ask Siri.

apple update safari tabs

The final noteworthy addition to Arc Search is two convenient new tab controls. Accessed by hitting the upward-facing arrow in the bottom-right corner, you’ll now see toggles for Page Zoom and Request Desktop Site. I’m someone who often employs different settings across different sites, and I imagine I’m not alone in that, so being able to quickly tweak a site’s settings from the tab panel will be a nice change moving forward.

9to5Mac’s Take

Arc Search aims to represent a new method of web browsing that’s powered by AI, and these updates come on the heels of a likely AI story during the May 7 Apple event, not to mention a definite AI-heavy WWDC next month. So it’s no surprise Arc’s team is working hard to make the app more convenient for users in an effort to ingrain habitual use.

It won’t be long before we see what AI enhancements Apple has in store for Siri, Safari, and related core software, but whether the company offers features that directly compete with Arc Search or not, it sure is fun to witness a new era of app innovation and experimentation fueled by AI.

Bug in Safari for iOS 15.8, possible reproduction for loss of tabs

As smartphone web browsers often do, there's a "soft cache" to remember intermittent form data that's been filled in, until the exceeding memory flushes out the soft cache, to cause the webpage with the form on the webpage to reload.

However the bug makes me lose all my tabs on iOS 15.8 like on iOS 15.8.3

Don't take my works as gospel but here's how I think the bug is reproduced.

1) Have multiple tabs open in Safari, within the main default tab group

2) Open a tab with a form in it, to fill in some form data without submitting the form

3) Do stuff elsewhere on the iPhone causing it to flush the soft cache

4) Open a third-party app (not made by Apple) to then open a URL in Safari, which'll jump from the internal browser first, to the external browser second

5) As the form fields content cannot be restored, Safari also deletes all the open tabs, which are strangely nowhere to be seen under the "recently closed tabs" menu.

I have experienced this bug with Unibox, Discord, Surfed and Readder apps.

I'm using iOS 15.8.3 for iPhone 6S
