15 Best Day Trips from St Louis

A port city built along the bustling banks of the Mississippi river, St Louis was founded in 1764. It was named for Louis IX of France, as the first European settlers there were French fur traders.

There’s a substantial depth of history in St Louis, both from the early European settlers and the natives who came before, making it a fascinating spot for a trip.

Once you’ve seen the famous Gateway Arch, browsed the city’s many museums, and explored its brilliant botanical garden, it’s time to widen your gaze to the area beyond.

Here are the best day trips to be taken from St Louis :

1. Springfield, Illinois

Springfield, Illinois

The state capital of Illinois is easily reachable within the day from St Louis, and is a great option for a change of scene if you still want the city life.

A mere 90-minute drive and you’ll find yourself in a thriving city, whose attractions are centred on the most famous ex-resident: Abraham Lincoln.

The best of these is the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library, which has lots of interesting exhibitions and provides a chance to interact with the history of the period.

Aside from Lincoln, there’s more history to be had: Springfield also hosts the pretty Old State Capitol building.

2. Hannibal

Hannibal, Missouri

Hannibal is on many St Louis lists because of its main claim to fame: it was the boyhood home of author Mark Twain.

This riverside town provided the inspiration for such classics as Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer – and therefore makes a great educational day trip.

In Hannibal you’ll have the chance to visit the novelist’s childhood home, as well as browsing the extensive museum dedicated to the author and his works.

And why not take a trip down the Mississippi river and relive the adventures of Huck himself?

3. Meramec Caverns

Meramec Caverns

One of the most intriguing natural wonders around St Louis, the Meramec caverns are more than deserving of a mention on the list of best day trips.

Missouri is, after all, known as the cave state – and these caverns are far and away some of the best on offer.

Not only are they a stunning example of nature’s work, they are also the oldest attraction along Route 66, and have some interesting historical claims to fame.

Jesse James was rumoured to have used the caves as a hideout, and before that they are thought to have been used as shelter by Native Americans.

Inn at Hermannhof

A highlight of the state’s wine country, Hermann is mainly known for its interesting German heritage – evidenced in the very German-sounding wineries like Hermannhof.

It was established in 1837 by – you guessed it – Germans, who had previously come from Philadelphia.

Located along the Missouri River, it’s a lovely place to spend some time enjoying your surroundings with a delicious glass of local wine, or perhaps taking a tour of one of the wineries.

There’s also often live music hosted on the outdoor terraces of the wineries, and if that’s not enough entertainment, you can always browse around the local shops.

5. The Katy trail

The Katy trail

This beautiful cycling and walking track stretches for over 200 miles throughout the state, more or less following the path of the Missouri River.

Cycling the trail is a great option if you feel like getting out into nature and leaving the car behind for a while.

It’s a relatively easy ride due to its fairly flat terrain, and if you get tired there are plenty of options for a quick bite to eat along the way, as well as places to shop for souvenirs of your adventure.

The trail can be started from several different points, but Defiance and Augusta are the most likely options from St Louis.

6. Johnson’s Shut-Ins

Johnson’s Shut-Ins

An intriguing natural attraction in the surrounds of St Louis is Johnson’s Shut-Ins.

A park created by volcanic activity long ago, the river’s flow has created pools, rapids and waterfalls that make for fun exploration.

There are hiking trails alongside, or in the summer you might simply sit around by one of the crystalline swimming spots and take a dip.

There are plenty of picnic spots to make this a great family day out, and there’s an excellent visitors’ centre to make your trip that bit easier.

7. Road Trip Along the Great River Road

Adult Bald Eagle Along The Great River Road

Often mentioned on lists of best road trips in the area, the Great River Road is surely one of the most aesthetically pleasing ways to spend your day away from St Louis.

Hugging the western border with Illinois, the road runs alongside the Mississippi River and provides some beautiful views out across the water.

There are also some excellent spots to stop at along the way, such as the town of Alton for some great, cheap eats, or the Pere Marquette State park for a chance to stretch your legs and perhaps spot some birds.

8. Shaw Nature Reserve

Shaw Nature Reserve

Located just 30 minutes outside of the city, nature abounds in Shaw Nature Reserve.

Over fourteen miles of trails you can experience a variety of different landscapes, from meadows to forests, as well as plenty of different fauna.

If walking isn’t your thing you can always take a ride on the Wilderness Wagon instead – or simply pack a picnic and find a nice spot in which to sit.

There are three different picnic areas in the park, plus a lovely outdoor classroom for the kids, with plenty of toys and equipment to keep them entertained.

9. Columbia

Columbia, Missouri

The home of the main campus of the University of Missouri, Columbia makes for a really fun day trip option.

Its downtown area has all the usual suspects of a student city: great restaurants, buzzing bars, and excellent shopping opportunities.

There are also quite a few good museums available in the town, two good examples of which include the George Caleb Bingham art gallery which hosts contemporary exhibitions, and the Museum of Art and Archaeology which covers a broader range of time periods.

10. Six Flags Theme Park, Eureka

Six Flags Theme Park, Eureka

It might not be the most cultural destination outside of St Louis, but sometimes all you need on your trip is a guilt-free day riding the roller coasters.

Six Flags is a chain with branches all over the US, so you’re guaranteed to have a very happy family at the end of a day here.

There are plenty of food options at the park, plus entertainment beyond the rides in the form of staff decked out as characters from Looney Tunes.

If you’re feeling the heat, you can also head into the on-site waterpark – the price of which is included in your ticket – for a fun splash around.

11. Diving in Bonne Terre Mine

Bonne Terre Mine

The largest freshwater dive site in the USA is located just south of St Louis along Highway 67. French for ‘good earth’, the site used to be a functioning mine before being flooded.

It’s a fascinating underwater adventure, and divers can see the mine just as it was left: ore carts, picks, and locomotives all lying just as they were in 1961 when it was abandoned.

If you don’t dive, it’s still possible to experience the site above water, by taking a narrated tour around the underground rooms of the mines.

A boat ride is another option.

12. Ste. Genevieve

Ste. Genevieve

A gorgeous French-colonial town, Ste. Genevieve was actually the first permanent location for European settlers in Missouri.

Its French influence is much in evidence in the architecture around town, which makes wandering round the town more than pleasant.

Named after the patron saint of Paris, Ste. Genevieve has lots of entertaining diversions: you can take a tour of some of the historic houses, or visit a very French winery.

All in all, a trip to Ste. Genevieve feels like you’ve travelled back in time, rather than just an hour south of St Louis.

13. St. Charles

St. Charles

The historic charm of St. Charles, located around half an hour from St Louis, is hard to resist.

Make sure to visit its most important monument, the First State Capitol from 1821, of which you can take a tour.

The Capitol has been restored and decked out in the furnishings of the period, so it makes for a great interactive history lesson.

Then, of course, St. Charles is fully equipped with an excellent selection of restaurants, especially around Main Street, for after you’ve finished taking in the cultural sights.

14. Ozark National Scenic Riverways

Ozark National Scenic Riverways

Though a fair way from St Louis, the Ozark National Scenic Riverways are nonetheless worth a visit if you’ve exhausted the closer options.

This was the first national park area to protect a river system, and it’s easy to see why it was designated a protected area in 1964. There are two particularly famous rivers – the Jacks Fork River and Current River – which were the initial reason for the creation of the national park, but there are also heaps of other swimming spots, hikes, and historic sites in the area.

15. Washington

Washington, Missouri

What better place to head on a day trip from St Louis than the town known for being the gateway to wine country? Washington sits on the Missouri River’s south bank, and aside from having more wineries nearby than you could possibly handle, it’s got great eating options, shopping, and even a historical society museum.

If you’re visiting in August, the options get even better: the annual Washington Town and Country Fair is a spectacular event for the whole family.

The 15 best day trips from Los Angeles

Experience everything that SoCal has to offer with these day trip from Los Angeles to stunning nearby beaches, wineries and small towns

Michael Juliano

L.A. is great and all, but sometimes you need a change of scenery. If you only have one day to spare, consider one of these quick day trips from Los Angeles to some amazing nearby destinations. Luckily, living in L.A. means it’s an easy (well, depending on traffic) and often  scenic drive  to SoCal’s best beaches , small towns, wineries and gorgeous desert landscapes—all within three hours of the city. Oddly enough, taking advantage of the ease with which you can get  out of L.A. is easily one of the best things to do  in L.A.

From wine tasting in Santa Barbara and  vintage hunting in Palm Springs to  camping  in Joshua Tree or feeling the sand between your toes in San Diego, you’re sure to find a short trip (as opposed to a longer road trip ) worth taking on this list.

Top day trips from Los Angeles

Coronado

1.  Coronado

2 hrs by car There’s a reason Coronado has topped lists of the country’s best beaches: Its wide shores never feel overcrowded, the soft, fine-grained sand is easily walkable and the weather is practically perfect. Just a quick ferry ride or bridge drive from San Diego, this wealthy peninsula has the feel of a resort town with the amenities that come from being near a major city.

The beachfront grounds of the regal, red-roofed Hotel del Coronado  are a must-visit, even if you can’t foot its pricey room reservations. Back in town, stop into hole-in-the-wall diner Clayton’s Coffee Shop for a quick meal or MooTime Creamery for frozen treats. Coronado is also home to a sizable naval base, and while you can’t exactly visit, you can spot fighter jets coming in for landings and submarines surfacing off the coast.  —Michael Juliano

Ojai

2.  Ojai

1 hr 20 mins by car Ojai is a not-so-hidden gem close enough to L.A. for a day trip, but with a unique, relaxed feel that’s worlds away from busy city life. Start early with a decadent, hearty breakfast at Bonnie Lu’s , then stroll the town’s quaint main street; the antique shopping is great here, but relatively new school shops like Summer Camp are also worth a stop.

Tour an olive farm or a citrus grove, then grab an organic lunch at Farmer & the Cook . Alternatively, grab a a bite to go and explore the nearby trails in Los Padres National Forest , just north of town. If the weather is right, swimming holes abound along the Sespe Creek.

Back in civilization, check out Bart’s Books , an outdoor bookstore housed in an actual house (sans roof), or head up to Meditation Mount   (reservations required)  for incredible views, especially the famed “pink moment” at sunset.

Swing back to the center of town to explore its many wine tasting rooms, or grab a beer and a bite at Ojai Beverage Company . Chief’s Peak, the bar at Ojai Rancho Inn (where you should stay if your trip runs long), is a hip spot for an after-dinner drink; you’ll find more old-timers—and regular live music—at Deer Lodge down the road.  —Kate Wertheimer

Santa Barbara

3.  Santa Barbara

1 hr 50 mins by car Santa Barbara is a scenic and worthy vacation destination regardless of your starting point, but we’re fortunate enough to have relatively easy access (granted that the L.A. traffic gods are working in our favor).

Stearns Wharf is a go-to spot to see the Pacific, and nearby is State Street, filled with tons of shops and people-watching opportunities. And the Wharf isn’t the only place to see the water: Butterfly Beach, a relatively private spot, is situated next to the Four Seasons Biltmore Hotel and faces west for ideal sunset-watching views.

Grab lunch at La Super-Rica Taqueria —famous for being one of Julia Child’s favorite eateries. The lines tend to be on the ridiculous side, but it’s worth the wait for novelty’s sake alone.

If you’re traveling with family, spend a few hours at the Santa Barbara Zoo   (reservations required) . Otherwise, grab a glass of Pinot Noir at one of the many tasting rooms along the Urban Wine Trail   (hours and status vary by winery) ; the spots are located in downtown Santa Barbara, steps from the Amtrak station, and source grapes from local vineyards.  —Seth Kelley

Discover the best things to do in Santa Barbara

Laguna Beach

4.  Laguna Beach

1 hr by car Forget what you know from a certain unfortunate MTV reality show: Laguna Beach is an easygoing oceanfront city graced with lush vegetation, tidepools and a picturesque rocky coastline.

Main Beach is the spot of choice for downtown sunbathing, but you’ll find pristine, less crowded beaches at tide pool-filled Treasure Island, camper-friendly Crystal Cove or hidden Victoria Beach with its weathered, castle-like turret.

Walk the city’s downtown area to find a mix of shops, galleries and restaurants; many eateries cater to the well heeled, so we suggest bringing a picnic lunch to enjoy on a bench at the hilltop Heisler Park. Do, however, follow the smell of fresh waffle cones onto the enchanting Peppertree Lane for a scoop from Gelato Paradiso .

It’s not just about the beach here; you can explore the reservation-only Hortense Miller Garden  or thousands of acres of hillsides and canyons to find hiking trails, nature centers and the Pacific Marine Mammal Center   (closed through fall 2024) , a sea lion rescue. Summertime typically sees the arrival of two festival favorites: Pageant of the Masters , a live stage interpretation of classical paintings, and Sawdust Art Festival , an open-air artisan market that transforms into a Christmas village in late fall. There’s only one road in and out from the 5, so bring some patience during rush hour—alternatively, take the scenic route and follow Coast Highway through Newport Beach.  —Michael Juliano

Solvang

5.  Solvang

2 hrs by car After Danish immigrants grew tired of Midwestern winters, they began to make their way west and eventually settled in the pastoral Santa Ynez Valley. Though you won’t find many Danes in Solvang anymore, you will find wooden windmills, rural houses and a replica of Copenhagen’s Round Tower. The post-WWII structures are as touristy as they are charming; walk around town to find an assortment of Christmas shops, Hans Christian Andersen and Little Mermaid keepsakes, and sort-of-Danish bakeries.

Solvang’s downtown area is dotted with breweries and pancake cottages, including local standbys Solvang Brewing Company   and Paula’s Pancake House —and an increasingly impressive new culinary scene . For a bit of history on the area, make sure to stop by the humble Elverhøj Museum .

For a more offbeat adventure, head to the outskirts of town to  OstrichLand , which feels like the Jurassic Park of the ostrich and emu world. If you’re visiting in early January, make sure to schedule your trip around the annual Christmas tree bonfire . —Michael Juliano

Balboa Island

6.  Balboa Island

1 hr by car, 5 min ferry

Visitors to Balboa Island in Newport Beach can enter the man-made island by driving onto it via Marine Avenue, but it’s far easier—and more fun—to park your car on the Balboa Peninsula and take the Balboa Island Ferry for a quick and scenic five-minute trip across the water.

The first order of business: getting your hands on one of the island’s famed frozen bananas (make the Bluth family proud). Choose from rivals Sugar N Spice or Dad’s Donut & Bakery Shop; both claim to be the originators of the chocolate-covered frozen treat.

Take a jaunt around the 1.6-mile boardwalk surrounding the island, passing by multi-million dollar homes and streets named after gems, before strolling down Marine Avenue, the island’s main artery. Here you’ll find plenty of restaurants ( Wilma’s Patio is a staple), boutique shops, art galleries and the Balboa Island Museum and Historical Society .

Of course, there’s plenty to do out on the water, too: kayaking, parasailing, paddle boarding and the like. If you’ve got kiddos tagging along, the Balboa Fun Zone on the peninsula hosts a Ferris wheel and plenty of arcade games.  —Erin Kuschner

Los Alamos

7.  Los Alamos

2 hrs 20 mins by car Once a major stagecoach stop, this small, easy-to-miss town looks stuck in the past with its Old West style—but behind the facade are trendy treasures waiting to be discovered. Inside Bob’s Well Bread Bakery is a hip, stylish setup serving artisan breads—including gluten free options—croissants, sandwiches and more. Exploring antique shops and art galleries can easily fill a day here, just be sure to call ahead, as some places are only open on weekends.

A big draw of the Los Alamos area is its wine tasting—this is Santa Barbara County, after all—which can be done at Bedford Winery  and other local tasting rooms. Before you leave town, make a pit stop at  1880 Union , an event space with an authentic stagecoach saloon, or spend the night at the Victorian Mansion Bed and Breakfast . For being a single stoplight town (we haven’t actually counted, but you get it), there’s a bevy of delicious places to eat, such as  Full of Life Flatbread (known for its occasional A-list diners) and the destination-worthy Bell’s .  —Stephanie Morino

San Juan Capistrano

8.  San Juan Capistrano

1 hr 30 min by car, 1 hr 25 min by train A piece of California history and a quaint old town make San Juan Capistrano an off-the-beaten-path day trip with a lot of charm and a little learning. If you take Amtrak there, the train will drop you off right where you want to be—just a couple of blocks from a good cup of coffee at Hidden House Coffee .

From there, you can tour Mission San Juan Capistrano , founded in 1776 and arguably one of the mission chain’s prettiest links. The mission used to be known as a migratory destination for swallows in February, but the famous birds have been spotty in recent years. If you have your heart set on getting up close with some animals, check out Zoomars   (reservations recommended) , a petting zoo for kids of all ages (read: adults love it, too). It’s a historic ranch where you can also pan for gold like the California miners did. You’re also near Los Rios Historic District , which has some historic homes and museums that are perfect for a walking tour.

When you get hungry, you have several options: Heritage Barbecue serves remarkable Texas-style smoked meats,  Ramos House is a romantic spot known for great food and huge Bloody Marys on the weekends and  Five Vines is a nearby wine bar with snacks and sandwiches. If you want to catch a later train, head over to Swallow’s Inn , the local dive bar, where bras hang from the ceiling and bands play late into the night. You’re still within stumbling distance of the train station.  —Sara Fay

Oak Glen

9.  Oak Glen

1 hr 30 mins by car

Though you can visit Oak Glen year-round, the best time to head to this picturesque town to the east is September through November. The five-mile loop of orchards, ranches, shops and restaurants is a necessity for any New England transplant looking for fall foliage, and the town’s most popular activity— apple picking —is a nice alternative to canvassing L.A.’s farmers’ markets.

Many of the orchards, like Willowbrook Apple Farm  (opens Labor Day weekend), offer a cider press to make your own cider, which you can pair with a cinnamon roll or apple dumpling from Apple Annie’s Restaurant & Bakery . Stop by the Turquoise Pueblo  on your way back to L.A. for some beautiful handmade Native American jewelry.  —Erin Kuschner

Solana Beach

10.  Solana Beach

2 hrs by car, or 2 hrs by train

If you want to spend a day in San Diego, you can either try to go big (the San Diego Zoo! Balboa Park!  Padres game! All in one day!) or go small-town and spend a chill day in a cool oceanfront neighborhood. The beach towns north of San Diego—no, we’re not talking about Pacific Beach—are the stuff of the Beach Boys lyrics.

In Solana Beach, you’ll find laid-back vibes and beaches that aren’t completely overrun. It’s easy to get there from L.A. via Amtrak, and it’s a perfect way to day-trip because all the spots you’ll want to hit are within walking distance of the station.

Start at  the Naked Cafe for a beach-y brunch, then, either head down to the beach at Fletcher Cove or cruise along the Cedros Design District for window shopping, brewery hopping and people watching. There’s also a mix of cute boutiques, surf shops, restaurants, taco spots and bars along South Coast Highway. If it’s racing season, the Del Mar Racetrack  isn’t far—it would be either a long walk or a short car ride.

Before you catch the train back up to L.A., you have several good options for dinner near the tracks: Station Sushi is a solid locals’ spot for classic and creative rolls, Bangkok Bay  has some of the best Thai food we’ve ever eaten and Pizza Port is known for being a last-slice-and-beer-before-Amtrak place. It’s directly across a pedestrian crosswalk from the train station, and has been slinging pies and pouring pints for three decades.  —Sara Fay

If the San Diego Zoo caught your eye, book a ticket and spend a day with the animals.

Temecula

11.  Temecula

When hoofing it to Napa and Sonoma isn’t an option, Temecula is your next best destination for a day of wine tasting. Before sampling the grapes, stop by quaint Old Town Temecula, where you can pay a visit to the Temecula Valley Museum  for a historical walking tour.

Then it’s down to business; the heart of Temecula’s Wine Country includes more than 30 wineries, which you can bounce between at your own leisure (don’t drink and drive, folks!) or take a guided tour from one of the many wine tour companies in the area. Taste your way through the 70-acre Wilson Creek Winery and the red-focused Monte De Oro Winery   before heading to Maurice Car’rie Vineyard  for an educated tasting and a loaf of the vineyard’s famous sourdough bread, oozing with brie.

Just down the road, Magical Adventure Balloon Rides encapsulates another popular Temecula activity: riding in a hot air balloon. We can’t think of a better way to end your day in Temecula than by sailing over the town’s vineyards at sunset with a glass of Champagne in hand. —Erin Kuschner

Palm Springs

12.  Palm Springs

2 hrs by car Known for its ultra-fancy resorts and legacy of celebrity residents, Palm Springs is worth at least a weekend, if you can afford the time. Still, if you’re limited to 24 hours, make the desert city a choose-your-own-adventure day trip.

Start with brunch at Cheeky’s , and trust us that it’s worth the wait. If you’re in the mood to exercise, check out Indian Canyons , made up of three separate canyons (Palm, Murray and Andreas) that each offer hiking trails and fantastic views of the diverse landscape. Another of the best ways to see Palm Springs is on the Aerial Tramway , which helps visitors escape the heat of the desert with a scenic ride to the top of the San Jacinto Mountains.

If relaxation is your goal, shop at the outlets in Cabazon, or just get a massage and sit by the pool. The Palm Springs Art Museum  is small but displays works from incredible artists including Picasso and Warhol. For dinner, try reservations at Sandfish  for superb sushi and Japanese whiskey.  —Seth Kelley

Big Bear

13.  Big Bear

2 hrs by car; access may be limited during the winter This mountain town is home to some of L.A.’s closest ski slopes in winter, but don’t discount a summertime trip, when a dip in a mountain lake is the best way to keep cool. Rent a kayak or paddleboard to tour the water, and keep an eye out for the white-domed Big Bear Solar Observatory perched at the water’s edge on the north shore. The hiking here is also plentiful and offers some amazing views.

If you’re a bit more adventurous, stop by Bear Valley Bikes and rent a mountain bike; there are fire roads for beginners and lots of technical, downhill single track for more seasoned riders.

Back in town, check out the Bowling Barn  and the Alpine Slide , both of which are a blast with or without kids in tow. For a drink with the locals, head to karaoke night (which is pretty much every night) at Murray’s Saloon , the town’s self-proclaimed “five star hole in the wall.”  —Kate Wertheimer

Joshua Tree

14.  Joshua Tree

2 hrs 15 mins by car You’ll find Joshua Tree National Park on our shortlist for perfect day trips, road trips and weekend getaways from L.A. That’s for good reason: the magical desert spot—with its gnarled, ancient namesake trees, picturesque cacti and giant boulders—should be on every traveler’s bucket list, no matter how much time they have to spare.

Watch rock climbers scale mini-mountains at  Hidden Valley campground (first-come, first-served) or try some scrambling yourself at Jumbo Rocks . If you visit in spring, head south to Pinto Basin for a chance to see colorful wildflowers in bloom.

On the drive out, plan for a pit stop at the Cabazon exit, where you can explore the famed dinosaur park from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (and even, for a fee, climb inside the three-story T. Rex for a photo op in his mouth). Shop for cacti at multiple roadside marts on Twentynine Palms Highway, or hang a left at Pioneertown Road for a stop at Pappy & Harriet’s , which boasts a ghost town, small inn and great live music.

Another worthwhile detour is Landers, home of countless alien sightings and new-age sound baths at the  Integratron   (reservations required) . In the town of Joshua Tree, take your pick from a few tasty restaurants, including Crossroads Cafe   to rub elbows with locals. There are some good thrift shops around here, as well as the kind of quirky public art; be sure to check out the World Famous Crochet Museum , as well as prolific artist Andrea Zittel’s A-Z West tour.  —Kate Wertheimer

Salton Sea and Slab City

15.  Salton Sea and Slab City

3 hrs by car This day trip isn’t for everyone; but if you’re a fan of things decrepit, forgotten and way off the beaten path, head south to Bombay Beach at the Salton Sea. A popular vacation spot in the ’50s and ’60s, these days all that’s left of the once-booming seaside town are photo-worthy ruins and a lot of dead fish.

The Ski Inn remains; stop by for a drink or a greasy bite and decorate a dollar bill to hang on the wall or ceiling. Continue on to Niland, made famous by artist Leonard Knight’s Salvation Mountain , a giant folk art monument made from adobe, straw and thousands of gallons of paint (you may remember it from Into the Wild ). Beyond is Slab City, a former marine training base that now exists as a squat for campers, transients and desert dwellers who’ve created a community complete with a library, skate park and live music stage, “the Range.” If you’re respectful and friendly, folks may share their hot spring and swimming hole secrets, so bring a bathing suit—or do as the locals do and go in your birthday suit.  —Kate Wertheimer

Shaniwar Wada is an excellent example of the Maratha Imperial architecture used in India in the bygone era. It tells the historical tale of the Maratha Kingdom as it has seen every event that occurred in Peshwas Life over time. It was built by the Peshwas’ symbolizing the brave hearts of the Marathas, who strived hard to keep its glory alive. Though the fort couldn’t tolerate the battering from the wrong time but the stone boundaries still recite the untold tales of the colourful journeys lead by the heroic Marathas. However, some ruins still remain reciting the remarkable stories and contorted tales. You can witness the enormous stone boundaries made to protect the beautiful Shaniwar Wada, which shows the level of security provided to the people of the kingdom. The walls have a magnificent wooden gate reflecting the Mughal architecture, which is another example of how secure the palace was made. There are long iron spikes tucked into the gate, which could reduce the attack of the enemy and kept elephants away.Besides this, you can see a garden which follows the style of the Mughal architecture. It also has a lovely fountain resembling a 16 petaled lotus, right in the middle of the garden. Adding to that, you can see the boundaries marked on the ground, which could tell about all the rooms. There is nothing more than this havoc of time, which changed the face of the mighty Shaniwar Wada into nothing. But you can still make these remains your window into the past to relive what has happened in history.History of Shaniwar Wada:The foundation stone of the Shaniwar Wada was laid in 1730 by Peshwa Bajirao I. Initially, it was intended to be a colossal palace of seven stories made out of stone. But the people of the national capital argued that only King can have a castle made of stone. So, the construction of Shaniwar Wada began using bricks. It took two years to complete this elegant structure, which displayed an excellent blend of the Maratha Imperial architecture with the Mughal architecture. The interiors had valuable furniture and decorations along with carvings of flowers and paintings of scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The first major fire in the year 1791 destroyed a significant part of the fort, which was re-constructed again. Then the next explosion in 1808 burnt all the necessary artifacts and documents in the palace. Then another fire in 1812 destroyed the upper two stories of the castle, followed by a fire in 1813 which destroyed the Royal Hall. All this destruction was taken to another level in the year 1818. The British attacked Shaniwar Wada, which resulted in collapsing all the top stories. Finally, in the year 1828, a fire caught the whole palace, which burned for a week and wrecked it. Architecture of Shaniwar Wada:Architecture of Shaniwar Wada is an excellent example of Maratha style of construction blended with authentic Mughal architecture. The main gate, also known as Delhi Darwaza, is adorned with iron spikes to restrain the enemy attack as it is enormous enough to pass an elephant through it. There is a small aisle on the top of the door which has dome-shaped windows definitely taken from the Mughal architecture. Besides this gate, the Wada has four more gates, namely Mastani Darwaza, Khidki Darwaza, Ganesh Darwaja, and Narayan Darwaza. The walls have floral carvings and paintings resembling the Mughal architecture style. Scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata are also found painted at various significant spots. The windows and doors are also dome-shaped contributing to the traces of Mughal architecture. Archaeologists believe that initially, the fort was six-floored before it was destroyed by the fire. Finally, the garden has a 16 petaled lotus representing the grace of the bygone era.

Aga Khan Palace

Built in 1982 by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, the Aga Khan Palace is a magnificent piece of history situated in 19 acres of land in the Yerwada area in Pune. Referred to as one of the most important landmarks of Indian history, along with the Indian freedom struggle, the palace has its roots deeply etched into bygone eras. The palace was built to help the poor in the areas surrounding Pune, which was drastically hit by famine in the early 1980s. One of the most stunning pieces of architecture in all of Pune, the Aga Khan Palace is also a famous tourist attraction, which was designed by a world-famous architect called Charles Correa.Additionally, the palace houses the samadhis (memorials) of Mahatma Gandhi’s wife, Kasturba Gandhi. Sources suggest that both Kasturba Gandhi and Mahatma Gandhi’s secretary Mahadev Desai breathed their last in the palace premises. And it is because of this that their memorials have been safeguarded in the palace grounds. The Aga Khan Palace is located in a huge ground, and has five, luxurious and spacious halls, along with several lawns. The structure resonates of Italian architecture, elegant yet intricate and magnificent.Of all the rooms and features of the palace, its arches are the most beautiful, almost mesmerising to the eyes. Aga Khan Palace has two huge floors, in addition to a corridor which spreads across the entire structure. The palace is known for organising several exhibitions and programmes throughout the year. Most of these reflect Gandhi’s lifestyle, thereby offering visitors a deep insight into the Mahatma’s life. Moreover, it is because of this and Gandhi’s links to it that the palace is now also known as the Gandhi National Memorial Society. One of the most prominent attractions of the palace is the room where Gandhi stayed during his imprisonment, along with his personal belongings and pictures of the other freedom fighters. |

Sinhagad Fort

Sinhagad or Kondana is a pride of the southwestern region of Pune. This fort was the one to support Maharashtra during the ancient battles. Sinhagad battle of 1671 is the significant one. Bhuleshwar range of the great Sahyadris is the home to this historical monument. The fortress has an elevation of around 1312 m above the sea level. Sinhagad has got its own breakneck slopes to protect it from all sides. There are two entrances to this fort – one in the north-eastern region (Pune Darwaza) and another one towards the southeastern part (Kalyan Darwaza). The authenticity and the richness of Sinhagad fortress date back to around 1000 years. This is evident from the carvings present on the walls of Kaundinya Eshwar temple there. Sinhagad is valued as a true sightseeing heritage. To begin your sightseeing adventure, you have Rajaram’s tomb which is worth a visit. The fortress displays some of the adorable monoliths of Tanaji Malusare – one of the efficient safe-keepers of the fort from Shivaji Maharaj’s era. Besides these crucial displays, the fortress has got its own military depot, a Kali temple, breweries, and a Hanuman effigy. Pune Darwaza, Kalyan Darwaza, Tilak Bungalow, Hawa Point, Kade Lot, Amruteshwar Temple, Tanaji Samadhi and Memorial raises the elegance of this fortress even today.Summiting the fortress offers some stunning views of the Khadakwasla Dam from one end; while from its other side, you can see glimpses of Torna Fort.

24 Hours in Sedona: The Incredibly Detailed Itinerary You Need for This Summer

Looking to make the most of your day trip to Sedona?

In this post, I’ll lay out an awesome one day in Sedona itinerary for exploring the outdoorsy side of the town. I made two detours here during my van life years. I’ve included all the top activities I visited that are worth checking out!

Sedona took me by utter surprise. I had never even heard of this town until one of my mentors from my corporate job, who happens to live there, showed me a video of his backyard on Zoom. He literally has a giant red butte in his backyard.

I spent a few days here on each road trip, so I managed to squeeze in a few hikes. But this town isn’t huge, so you can hit at least one short hike and check out the main things to do in just one day.

Let’s make the most of your time with an exciting day, starting with an early morning hike up the red rocks and ending with an epic sunset at Airport Mesa. I’ll also add some extra suggestions if you have some spare time and a quick travel guide.

Sample One Day in Sedona Itinerary

Here’s an all-in-one scroll for you! This is more catered to hikers and outdoorsy folk, but I will also include alternative options for non-hikers.

If it’s your first time and you want to get a lay of the land on a guided tour,  this sightseeing tour  will eliminate the guesswork and take you directly to the best spots.

Quick Facts to Visiting Sedona

The red rocks of Sedona are impressive all day, but the glow of an almost fiery orange during sunrise and sunset is beyond spectacular!

Aside from its natural beauty, this sleepy town has become an Arizona tourist powerhouse in recent years. Its fame stems from being recognized as a spiritual power hub due to its vortexes, swirling centers of energy that are conducive to healing, meditation, and self-exploration.

What to Do in Sedona in One Day

Take a morning hike.

Get an early start to the day and head out for a morning hike to one of the red rock formations. And, you really have to wake up early!

Finding parking can be challenging for most of the best hikes in Sedona since they’re primarily in residential areas with limited space. If you can’t find a parking spot, well, you’ll have to wait it out, which could take a while if it’s still super early.

Here are a few great, relatively short hikes I recommend:

Devil’s Bridge Trail

  • Length/Duration: ~ 4.2 miles (2-3 hours )
  • Difficulty:  Moderate
  • Trailhead:  Off Dry Creek Road, the Devil’s Bridge trailhead can be reached by taking the Mescal to Chuckwagon trail if you don’t have a high-clearance vehicle. If you have a 4×4, the trail length is only 2 miles.

Devil’s Bridge is definitely one of the most popular Sedona hikes, and I highly recommend adding it to your Sedona day trip itinerary. We woke up at 6am to hit the trail and reach the amazing natural sandstone arch known as Devil’s Bridge. It’s the biggest one around here!

The hike to Devil’s Bridge is about 4.2 miles round trip and moderately challenging but nothing too crazy. There are some switchbacks, and it gets a bit steep, but once you’re past that, you’ll come to a fork in the hiking trail that leads to the bridge. When you reach the arch, go ahead and walk across it (if you dare) and snap some epic photos.

Travel Tip: Come as early as you can!

  • Parking is severely limited.
  • The line to snap a pic on the bridge could stretch for over an hour. We left at 6 am and still had to queue at the top for 10-15 mins. It only gets worse later in the day.
  • Late afternoon is another good time to go.

Cathedral Rock Trail

  • Length/Duration: ~ 1.5 miles (2-3 hours)
  • Difficulty:  Moderate to challenging
  • Trailhead:  Off Back O’ Beyond Road

Cathedral Rock has got to be one of the most iconic sights and was one of my favorite places to explore!

Although shorter than Devil’s Bridge at around 1.5 miles round trip, this hike is a bit more challenging due to its steep ascent. It is worth every bit of huffing and puffing when you reach the top and take in the panoramic views.

This hike starts from the Cathedral Rock Trailhead and follows a well-marked trail up the east side of the rock formation. The trail quickly climbs towards the ‘saddle’ between two of Cathedral Rock’s spires. The final part of the trail involves a bit of rock scrambling, but handrails and footholds are carved into the rock to help you.

Travel Tip!  Given the trail’s popularity, try to start this hike early or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds and the heat.

Bell Rock Climb

  • Length/Duration:  Approximately 1.5 miles (1-2 hours)
  • Trailhead:  Just south of the Village of Oak Creek on Highway 179

Bell Rock is a distinct rock formation that looks uncannily like a giant bell. This hike is a bit of an adrenaline rush if you decide to tackle the final ascent to the formation’s peak.

The trail starts out fairly easy on the Bell Rock Pathway. You’ll know when you have reached the base of Bell Rock as the trail starts to steepen. This is where the fun begins. The climb up the rock isn’t technically difficult, but it’s a bit of a scramble.

To extend your hike:  This hike can be extended to include the neighboring Courthouse Butte Loop Trail for a total of 3.5 miles if you want a longer adventure. However, with only one day in Sedona, I suggest sticking to just Bell Rock.

The Birthing Cave

  • Length/Duration:  Approximately 2 miles (1-2 hours)
  • Trailhead:  Off Long Canyon Road

The Birthing Cave is more off the beaten path. Compared to other famous spots, this hike is usually less crowded. However, considering the size of the cave, even a dozen people can make it feel crowded inside.

You’ll be walking a relatively flat, generally more laid-back trail. The final few feet to enter the cave can be slippery from being worn by lots of other hiking boots over the years. Still, it is absolutely doable and incredibly fun.

The Birthing Cave isn’t really a cave; think of it as a huge, round opening in the rocks high up on the mountainside. The circular formation of the cave is believed to symbolize a womb, hence the name ‘Birthing Cave.’

Camera Tip!  You’ll have to have a wide-angle lens to get the entire cave.

Off-Road Adventure with a Jeep Tour

For an adrenaline-packed experience, take on one of the highest-rated Sedona Jeep tours here . Go bumping and bouncing across the rugged desert terrain through rocky trails and steep drop-offs to places you couldn’t access otherwise.

A Pink Jeep tour is the most popular, but there are so many options to choose from that I created a whole post here on the best Jeep tours in Sedona. There are many different trails to pick, or you can go with a sunset outing or a vortex tour to feel the mystical energy centers.

Afternoon: Explore Downtown Sedona

After a nature-filled morning, see the busy shops of downtown. There’s such an amalgamation of art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and souvenir shops; it’s one of my favorite small-town American feels.

Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village

One particular place you can’t miss in downtown is Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village . It closes at 5 pm on weekdays and 6 pm on weekends, so you’ll want to go earlier in the afternoon. I learned that the hard way.

This authentically fashioned traditional Mexican village is filled with art galleries, unique boutiques, and eateries. Even if you’re not interested in shopping, the architecture and fountains are just so Instagrammable.

Go for an Afternoon Hike

I would pick another of the hikes listed above. If you haven’t seen Cathedral Rock yet, I would say that is the one to do. Or, if you went there in the morning, try going to Devil’s Bridge in the afternoon when there will be fewer crowds.

Crescent Moon Picnic Area

If you’re not a hiker or just had enough for the day, I also spend some time at Crescent Moon Picnic Area, aka Red Rock Crossing.

It’s just a short drive away from the town of Sedona and has great views of Cathedral Rock. You can also have some quiet time by the river. This attraction is a lesser-known gem, and at least the day I went, it wasn’t very crowded at all.

I went in the autumn, and there was terrific colored fall foliage. You can also take a dip in the water if it’s warm enough, but it’s not very deep.

Chapel of the Holy Cross

People don’t come to the Chapel of the Holy Cross for religious reasons (although you can visit for that too). Constructed in the 1950s, this architectural marvel features an innovative and modern design, with a towering cross embedded into its structure. Aside from the church itself, the red rock bird’s eye view from the chapel is what makes it so special.

Inside, the chapel is surprisingly simple. You can also go to the gift shop at the chapel’s base.

Parking Tip!  The chapel tends to get busy, so you may have to wait to park at the base and walk up the hill to get there.

Sunset at Airport Mesa

If there’s one thing you absolutely can’t miss, it’s the sunsets at Airport Mesa. This sunset spot left me so speechless that I actually came back to see it three times.

It’s one of the best places in Sedona to get a 360 degree view of the city and the full range of the red rock formations. The vistas from here are simply mind-blowing, to say the least. During the day, it’s impressive, sure. But come sunset, it is really something else.

Parking Tip!  As is the trend, Airport Mesa is another crazy crowded place. Think of hundreds of people every sunset. Thankfully, the old airport has a giant parking lot you can park in for a small fee.

Where to Stay in Sedona

Uptown Sedona is a prime location with many shops, restaurants, and galleries within walking distance. Alternatively, West Sedona has a more relaxed, residential feel while still providing quick access to hiking trails and the downtown area.

Best Hotels in Sedona

  • Grand Canyon National Park (2 hours):  An iconic national park with a striking canyon landscape or you can join a trip here
  • Flagstaff (1 hour):  Gateway to Grand Canyon with trendy coffeeshops and some cultural attractions, like the Lowell Observatory and the Museum of Northern Arizona

Is 1 Day Enough for Sedona

While most key sites in Sedona can be visited in a day, the best hiking trails may require more time. A day trip may suit non-hikers better, but a single day may feel rushed if you like hiking, biking, or photography. I recommended two to three days for the best experience.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Sedona is from March to May, when the temperatures are warm but not scorchingly hot, and the area is in full bloom. Remember to book hotels early as it is also the peak tourist season. I went both times in the fall, and the cooler temperatures and fall colors made for a beautiful visit.

It gets quite hot in the summer, and in the winter, though chilly, you may be lucky to witness a snow-covered red rock landscape. Plus, there are way fewer people.

How to Get Here

By Air:  The closest airport is Flagstaff Pulliam Airport, which is only around 40 minutes away by car. It has limited service, connecting to Phoenix and Denver. For more flight options, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is approximately a two-hour drive. Use  Expedia  to find the best flight prices.

By Car:  A road trip is the best option if you’re already in Arizona. The scenic drive is beautiful, and you’ll want a car anyway.

By Shuttle:  If you’re flying into Phoenix and prefer not to drive, the Arizona Shuttle regularly serves between Phoenix Sky Harbor and Sedona, with nine scheduled trips daily.

Once you’re here, getting around is best done by car, whether rented or your own, given the city’s spread-out nature. Use  DiscoverCars  to find rental car deals.

Final Thoughts: 24 Hours in Sedona

Sedona is a town you can go back to over and over again. There are so many trails, and the city is filled with the new age wellness and spiritual vibe, all set against dazzling landscapes. It’s really a place to add to your American bucket list.

How to plan a road trip, from cross-country journeys to weekend getaways

1 day trip near by me

Driving is embedded into American culture, which is why road-tripping is so popular across the U.S. Whether you're looking to visit cities for history and culture or national parks for access to the great outdoors, a road trip can take you there. If you're not sure where to start, here's how to plan a road trip.

In this post

How do you plan a road trip for beginners?

When is the best time to start planning a road trip, how many days should you plan for a road trip, how to determine the best itinerary to take, how to choose when to take a road trip, how to plan a road trip on a budget, what is an appropriate/realistic driving time for each section of the trip, what are the best road trip tools/apps to use, what are the essentials to buy and pack, what are the main steps in the road trip planning process.

A family of four cheering in the car and excited to go on a road trip.

If you've never planned a road trip before, there are a few things you'll want to discuss with your travel companions before you start crafting a turn-by-turn itinerary. Start with where you want to go. We're talking big picture, like a region or a state, not every single stop along the way (we'll offer tips for how to plan a road trip with stops later on). Then think about how long you want to go for. And finally, consider your budget. Once you nail down those three things, you can start looking at the details.

A happy gay couple is sitting in the dining area and holding a laptop in front of them.

The earlier the better! Planning a road trip can take quite a bit of time and effort, so allowing yourself at least a few weeks to put together a full itinerary is a good idea. You'll also want to leave enough time between planning and departure to get your car checked out by a mechanic. No one wants to break down on the road!

And if you're renting a car instead of driving your own, you'll want to book your rental car in advance to ensure there's inventory (say, the right type of rental car available).

The duration of your road trip is entirely up to you. The two important things to consider are where you want to go and what you want to do along the way. If you're looking for recommendations for how to plan a cross-country road trip, give yourself at least two weeks if you want to make a few sightseeing stops. If you want to take the trip at a more leisurely pace and spend more time sightseeing than driving, four weeks is more reasonable. Regional road trips, however, can be as short as a few days. Or you could really take your time and stretch them out over a week or more.

A tall arch bridge across a ravine between two cliffs overlooking the ocean.

Choosing a road trip itinerary largely depends on your personal preferences, but in all cases, you should start by thinking about where you want to go, considering who you'll be traveling with. If you're planning a family road trip , that might take you to different destinations than if you were traveling with a group of friends or by yourself.

Once you have your general destination in mind, whether that's a region or a state or a full cross-country journey, you'll want to start selecting points of interest within that region. Plot these points on a map, then connect the dots! This is a good starting point for route planning, but now comes the laborious part: checking drive times between those points. It'll take a bit of finagling to create an itinerary that works in your favor.

As you're planning your road trip itinerary, you'll also need to consider your overnight locations. Some remote destinations might not have accommodations at all , and more popular accommodations may book up months in advance.

You should always consider seasonality for road trips. When you pick a destination, look at the typical weather for each season. In general, it's usually wise to avoid snowy destinations in the winter (some roads close seasonally) and extremely hot destinations in the summer (extreme heat can affect your car).

You can do a road trip on any budget, but no road trip will be free. You always need to consider the cost of gas and food. One way to save money, however, is on accommodations. Hotels are often more expensive than campsites, but campsites frequently book up in advance, particularly in the summer.

If you have more than one driver, you could take shifts and have a longer driving time each day. But an individual driver should typically not drive more than six to eight hours in one day. More experienced drivers, however, might have a higher limit of say, 10 to 12 hours. Drowsy driving is extremely dangerous, though, so make sure the drivers are well rested before each segment, and take breaks every 2 hours.

Every road tripper has their preference of apps, but these are tried-and-true favorites.

  • Google Maps
  • Roadtrippers
  • Triptik by AAA
  • iOverlander
  • Atlas Obscura

Here's a quick and easy packing list for a road trip.

  • First aid kit
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Jumper cables
  • Ice scraper (if traveling during winter)
  • Portable phone charger
  • Paper towels or toilet paper
  • Bottled water

A family of four takes their bags and the kid's toys from the back of their car.

2 months before departure: Start looking at the points of interest you want to visit, consider the duration of your road trip, and determine your budget

1 month before departure: Get your car checked out or rent the relevant car for your itinerary and book your accommodations

2 weeks before departure: Buy the essential items

1 week before departure: Do a “test” pack to ensure everything fits in your car, or in your luggages if you are planning a road trip abroad

A road trip is an ideal way to see a destination, but it takes some careful planning to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable trip. While planning is important, always leave spare time in your itinerary. You never know what you might discover along the way!
