Dear Departed , the second album from Sam Burton, arose from a time of rebirth. In the last few years, Burton basically started over. He temporarily abandoned the life he’d built in Los Angeles, where he’d cut his teeth performing around town and connecting with like-minded musicians. By the end of 2020, everything pointed him back home to Utah, where he stayed for a few months helping a friend rebuild their house. It was a real life metaphor, the literal construction project mirroring the personal growth Burton was experiencing. “It was a return home,” he says. “My inner world really opened up.”
There’s a freedom in leaving everything behind, and Burton embarked on a wandering phase. He went and stayed at a friends’ family home in a rural region further north in California, where he holed up in a cabin and helped the grandmother farm to earn his keep. He crashed with friends all around Los Angeles, until he found himself a new gig and a new apartment of his own. Along the way, he was writing songs. First in the cabin retreat, and then carrying them with him from one person’s home to the next. Following his 2020 debut I Can Go With You , Dear Departed is something of a reintroduction after a period of transition and transformation.
He joined up with producer Jonathan Wilson to craft a more intricate, layered sound that recalled the lived-in yet immediate singer-songwriter albums of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Burton was taken with Wilson. “He gets what a songwriter needs,” he reflects. Just as he had with artists like Angel Olsen and Father John Misty, Wilson helped Burton achieve a sound that didn’t descend into retro pastiche, but rather became an evocative echo, a dream of the past. In scope, it finds Burton using a far bigger canvas than on his debut, giving the emotions therein a new sense of urgency and intensity. But the album still has an intimacy to it, like Burton and his backing musicians are crammed onto the corner stage of a smoke-filled bar in a long lost time.
From the production to the performances to Burton’s core compositions, there’s a timelessness across Dear Departed . As an opener, “Pale Blue Night” perfectly sets the atmosphere — Burton sighing over twilit strings. Many other songs, including “Long Way Around” and “Coming Down On Me,” might seem to move at an easy lope, but thematically sift through the remains of faded memories and past lives. Burton’s smoldering melodies are met again and again with ripples of piano and swells of orchestration. It doesn’t sound quite like an album anyone else is making right now, nor does it sound quite like any one identifiable moment of the past. It’s Burton rifling through his own history and music history alike to achieve a singular vision.
Dear Departed gives us Burton’s twist on eternal lovelorn themes, carried by his twist on classic songwriting. Even if he himself might approach it skeptically, there’s a poignance to that, the idea of returning to foundational musical forms in order to excavate universal human feelings. Characterizing it as an album wracked with pain and loss, Burton spends many of these songs saying goodbye to a version of himself, a passage of young adulthood, the last strains of innocence.

MOJO Rising: Sam Burton
Introducing sam burton: the la scene’s tarot-reading rhinestone cowboy..
Back stage at London’s Roundhouse, Sam Burton is preparing for the latest show on a European tour as main support to Weyes Blood. How, MOJO wonders, did the low-profile 32-year-old singer-songwriter land such a prestigious gig?
“I read tarot cards for people and I did hers,” Burton says. “I’ve been doing it for myself for a while, I find it really therapeutic, and during the pandemic I started doing it for other people. Honestly, I feel that every tour I’ve gotten on was because of that. It always ends up being like, ‘Hey, do you want to go on tour?’”
Not to cast aspersions on Burton’s tarot-reading abilities, but those breaks also might be down to the calibre of his music. Coming out later this year, Burton’s second album, Dear Departed , presents him as a classic LA country troubadour, and one who can harness a melancholic beauty redolent of Glen Campbell. It’s a comparison helped no end by producer [and Roger Waters’ touring guitarist] Jonathan Wilson wrapping up Burton’s tales of lost love and hitting life’s lonely highway in lush orchestrations.
Burton maintains he didn’t set out to make a retro-sounding record. But he was drawn to some well-worn songwriting tropes, reframing them to fit his own circumstances as he found himself after a break-up, without a job, apartment or record deal, working on a farm to make ends meet. “I definitely tried to play with some cliché. I didn’t shy away from it,” he says. “To me, it feels like holding hands with the past and acknowledging it. We’re not reinventing the wheel. It’s about having a kinship with these things but also trying to make it personal. The analogy I would use would be like a director making a genre movie, you can make it about yourself.”
For me, songwriting is mystical.
Burton’s own story began in a small conservative town outside of Salt Lake City. Snooping around in his stepfather’s closet one day, he came across a guitar and was promptly forbidden to touch it. “So I snuck it out when he was at work and taught myself to play a few chords,” Burton recalls. “As a kid, I was a rebellious little asshole. When I showed him, I think he was impressed that I was actually interested in something and had shown some application, so he bought me my own.”
Burton’s first band, The Circulars, produced a decent enough, Mazzy Star-influenced debut, 2016’s Are You Waiting For The Setting Sun. But it wasn’t until he relocated to LA that Burton really hit his stride as a songwriter and released his debut solo LP, 2020’s I Can Go With You , via a one-album deal with Tompkins Square. Now signed to Partisan, the shimmering Nashville skylines of Dear Departed feel like the perfect setting for Burton’s songs, so it’s surprising to hear he’s not sure how his future musical endeavours will manifest. “I want to keep it open. The shit I’m writing is so simple you could dress it up a lot of ways,” he shrugs. “For me, songwriting is kind of mystical. You have to create music that is just there. It’s like chasing something in the dark.”
● For fans of: Glen Campbell, Scott Walker, Jackson C. Frank
● While he was writing Dear Departed, Burton spent his days fixing the roof of an old friend’s house in Utah (“The more boring the work was, the more meditative I found it”), before moving to a farm owned by another friend’s grandmother in upstate California. “I’d work in the fields to earn my keep,” he says.
● Burton was one of the musicians who contributed to Ben Schwab’s 2022 project, Sylvie , an album that had a similar approach to connecting with the past as Burton, having been inspired by demos found by Schwab that his father had recorded in the ’70s. “We influenced each other a lot.”

Dear Departed, the second album from Sam Burton, arose from a time of rebirth.
Following his 2020 debut I Can Go With You, Dear Departed is something of a reintroduction after a period of transition and transformation.
After all that time couch-surfing and writing, Burton emerged with more than enough material for his sophomore outing.
From the production to the performances to Burton’s core compositions, there’s a timelessness across Dear Departed.
There’s a subtle juxtaposition at play in Burton’s writing. While he allows that the album sounds earnest and confessional, and that it inevitably drew from his own recent experiences, he was “trying not to be very ‘Dear Diary’ about it.” Instead, the same way Burton returned to classic songwriting forms, so too did he return to certain universal imagery that could be about anyone’s relationships, heartbreak, and loneliness. He intentionally played with cliches; even if the music is often yearning and beautiful, there’s a sly wink. It was a way of processing life’s changes without getting maudlin about it. “There’s loss, there’s all of that in there,” Burton says. “You can’t write a joke unless there’s truth in it.”
That holds true until the very end, when closer “A Place To Stay” offers some hope for the next chapter. “Where the valley’s low there is peace to find/ But now don’t the stars look so very high,” Burton sings. There’s that smirk, that other thing, the undercut. From down in that peaceful valley, the stars, and thus the climb back out into life, are a long uphill battle away. In the end Dear Departed is the sound of Burton — maybe a bit wearied, maybe a bit more spiritually attuned, maybe a bit bemused — beginning the ascent.

Sam Burton’s upcoming second album, Dear Departed, was produced by Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty, Margo Price) at his Topanga Canyon studio with some of the best studio players in LA. Together, Wilson and Burton achieved a sound that doesn’t descend into retro pastiche, but rather becomes an evocative echo, a dream of the past. In scope, it finds Burton using a far bigger canvas than on his acclaimed 2020 debut I Can Go With You, giving the emotions therein a new sense of urgency and intensity. Burton has a knack for mining pure Laurel Canyon AM gold. Pastoral string arrangements bloom in the background of Sam’s striking honeyed vocals - like a modern-day Campbell, Orbison, or Nilsson.

New Sam Burton single ‘I Don’t Blame You’ (Song of the Day)
Sam Burton shares his inner-Walden on ‘I Don’t Blame You’, taken from his upcoming album ‘Dear Departed’.
Before Sam Burton ‘s stunning 2020 Tompkins Square album I Can Go With You , he released a 2016 cassette titled Until Returning , which sounded like a lost tape recording of Tim Buckley or Jackson C. Frank. In an interview around that release, and taking a line from Bob Dylan , he said he was making music he wanted to hear. He seems to have stuck to that premise since, and there’s no denying that Burton is something of a master when it comes to projecting that inner world through his songs.
On his new single, ‘ I Don’t Blame You ‘, those beloved retro stylings extend to the accompanying video, which Sam edited himself and Co-Directed with his old pal Nick Neihart. They nail it beautifully, right down to the font on the opening titles…add to that Burton’s velvet-lined vocals and some beautiful harmonies, and you have another winner.
While the past may inform his music, he conjures something more modern that also offers a cathartic release from the everyday chaos of our fast-paced lives. We all need our inner Walden, and Burton found his in Northern California.
Burton says: “This song was one that stuck out to me when I was writing the songs for this record. I felt like I found a hypnotic rhythm that transported me and it felt inspired by the landscape that I was staying in. I started to see imagery in my mind and I tried to capture the spirit of it. This song brings me back to that place in Northern California and makes me see the forest and the rivers. I think it’s so important for a writer to have an inner world they can go back to to reconnect with themselves and this song revealed that place to me.”
Also, our Song of the Day, ‘I Don’t Blame You,’ is taken from the Los Angeles-based singer’s upcoming album ‘Dear Departed’ (out July 14th via Partisan).
Burton has also confirmed a run of headline west coast and international dates, including the End of the Road Festival in the UK later this summer. In the last year, Burton has toured with Loving, Jose Gonzalez , Weyes Blood , and Indigo Sparke , and in January, he completed a three-week residency at LA club TeeGee.

St. Petersburg Russia Tours
St. Petersburg is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. It was built on a collection of islands where the Neva River meets the Gulf of Finland and is divided further by a system of canals earning the city the name the Venice of the North. St. Petersburg was referred to as Peter the Great’s Window to the West because the great Tsar and reformer Peter the First designed the city to be Russia’s most European. The European feeling of the city is as true today as it was during the early 1700s. The embankments and boulevards are full of 18th and 19th century palaces of the nobility giving St. Petersburg an almost fairytale atmosphere. The historical city center is huge and dominated by the Winter Palace (former residence of the Tsars) which now houses the world famous Hermitage Museum . St. Petersburg Russia indeed is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities on earth. Our company is based in St. Petersburg, Russia allowing us to offer the widest variety of St. Petersburg Russia tours and excursions available on the Internet. All of our tours are designed so that our guests experience maximum enjoyment and become immersed in the culture and history of this great, Russian city. All our tours are private and can be fully customized upon your request. You can either choose one of our ready-made packages or create your own. Because we are locally based, we can offer excellent prices and the most knowledgeable guides in the city.
St. Petersburg – a Historical Gem
The city has witnessed some of the most dramatic and important moments in Russian history since its founding in 1703 by Peter the Great , making the city especially important for curious travelers coming to Russia. St. Petersburg was the scene of the Decembrist uprising , the famous court of Tsarina Catherine the Great , the assassination of Tsar Pavel and Alexander II and the home of Rasputin , the Siberian mystic. The last Tsar, Nicholas the II, was overthrown at the Winter Palace and the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and Lenin brought communism to power here. After the revolution, the name of the city was changed to Leningrad. During the Second World War, Leningrad was under siege and fully blockaded by the Nazis for almost 3 years, resulting in the deaths of up to 1.5 million of its citizens. Our St. Petersburg tours take you to the places associated with many of these events and more.

What is the best time of year to go to st petersburg.
St Petersburg is a spectacular city regardless of the time of year, it all depends on your itinerary. Summertime can be wonderfully warm and brings the White Nights, nearly 24-hours of sunshine and a party atmosphere. However, St Petersburg will be very busy and accommodation can be much more expensive. St Petersburg is quite cold in winter, but enchantingly beautiful and with less crowds. The worst weather takes place in November and March. Check to see if your visit will coincide with Russia’s holidays and festivals, and for more information about the best time to visit, read our guide .
How many days are enough in St. Petersburg?

The city centre rarely feels isolated as it is quite compact, and many bars and restaurants are open 24/7. During White Nights there are nearly 24 hours of sunlight, meaning that you’ll never venture anywhere in the dark. If you travel by taxi make sure to book in advance, or take public transport, which is perfectly safe and tourist-friendly. For more information, read our guide about staying safe in Russia .
Do they speak English in St. Petersburg?
St Petersburg is Russia’s most western-leaning city and staff in city centre restaurants, hotels, shops and attractions can generally accommodate English speaking tourists. There are also English-speaking tourist police. The metro and bus service maps have English translations, and intercom announcements are also made in English. If you’d prefer to travel by taxi, the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber) works in multiple languages, although it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. Younger Russians are more likely to speak basic English than older Russians, but Google Translate is useful if you get completely stuck.
