Princess Cruises, known for its integral role as the ocean-going co-star in the iconic “The Love Boat” series, has officially unveiled a second themed cruise, reuniting cast members from the original show. Following the tremendous success of the inaugural Love Boat cruise in 2022, fans of the popular show can sail along with Doc, Gopher, Isaac and Vicki Stubing as they cruise roundtrip from New York to Canada & New England aboard Enchanted Princess, August 31-September 7, 2024.

Princess Cruises Celebrations Ambassador Jill Whelan (aka Vicki Stubing) will join fellow Love Boat cast members including Bernie Kopell (Doc), Fred Grandy (Gopher), and Ted Lange (Isaac). Princess Cruises has announced its 2024 dates for a second outing of its Love Boat-themed cruises. Fans of the show and those seeking a little kitsch fun will be able to book a stay aboard alongside original cast members of the iconic late seventies and eighties TV series.

Following the tremendous success of the inaugural Love Boat cruise in 2022, fans of the popular show can sail along with Doc, Gopher, Isaac and Vicki Stubing as they cruise roundtrip from New York to Canada & New England aboard Enchanted Princess , from 31 August to 7 September 2024.

What is ‘The Love Boat’?

The Love Boat (1977-1987) was a comedy-drama that won a People’s Choice Award and multiple nominations for industry accolades. With contemporary TV guru Aaron Spelling at the helm, it ran on US network, ABC. Its sagas, following the amusing, romantic ups and downs of a captain, his passengers and crew aboard a Princess Cruise ship, made it one of the most popular and successful TV shows of its time.

Today’s Princess Cruises first created the idea for the Love Boat themed voyage in 2022. “We had such a blast connecting with fans on our theme cruise in 2022, so bringing it back in 2024 feels like it was meant to be, especially with the addition of some surprise guests,” said Jill Whelan, who played Captain’s daughter, Vicki Stubing, in the show.

The cruise fits with recent trends for TV and film-based travel. Some destinations, such as Northern Ireland (cradle of the Game of Thrones), have experienced tangible boosts to tourist numbers thanks to strong associations with filming locations .

Princess Cruises Announces “The Love Boat” Themed Cruise

Princess Cruises has announced a special themed cruise for 2022. The themed “Love Boat” cruise will take passengers on a 7-day cruise that will sail from the Port of Los Angeles to the Mexican Riviera.

Princess has chosen the Majestic Princess for the sailing, which will bring together the original cast members. The special cruise will include a celebration for the late actor Gavin MacLeod, who was known for his role as Captain Stubing.

The voyage will commence on February 28th, Macleod’s birthday, and sail on Princess Cruises’ signature Mexican Riviera itinerary. The itinerary, as well as Princess cruise ships, were prominently featured during the TV show’s 10-year run from 1977-1986. The itinerary’s ports include Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Cabo San Lucas.

Themed elements of the cruise will be hosted by Princess Cruises Celebrations Ambassador Jill Whelan, who played Vicki Stubing on the show. Whelan will be joined by fellow “Love Boat” cast members Cynthia Lauren Tewes (Julie McCoy), Bernie Kopell (Doc), Fred Grandy (Gopher), and Ted Lange (Isaac).

Together, they will share their favorite memories from the show, participate in various guest activities and celebrate the late Gavin MacLeod, who served as brand ambassador for Princess Cruises for more than 35 years until his passing in May 2021, at the age of 90.

Princess has been connected to “The Love Boat” beyond the setting of the show. The cruise line reunited with the original cast members for two ship christenings – Dawn Princess in 1997 and Regal Princess in 2014. The cast has also appeared on the cruise line’s Rose Parade float and sailing on a throwback cruise in 2015 in celebration of Princess Cruises’ 50 th anniversary.

In May 2018, the six original cast members of “The Love Boat” and Princess Cruises received an honorary star plaque on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of their contributions to the history of television.

A sparkling gem on the Costa del Sol, glamorous Marbella lies about an hour’s drive to the east of Malaga and basks in virtually year-round sunshine.

Here, lavish villas sprawl along emerald golf courses, while prestigious hotels line the soft sand beaches of the “Golden Mile”, a stretch of Spain’s most expensive real estate. A range of dusky coastal mountains, the Sierra Blanca, forms an inviting backdrop to the coastal development, their slopes sprinkled with the region’s famous pueblos blancos , or white villages.

Marbella may appear to be all glitz and designer shopping, but it’s actually a lovely old town with a centuries-long history, long, sandy beaches, and a thriving culinary scene. So spend some time here to discover what’s beneath that glossy veneer.

Why Visit Marbella

Puerto Banus

Marbella, or “Marbs”, as expats call it, offers a taste of the most luxurious living along the famous Costa del Sol. Just wandering around the old center or the neighboring yacht marina of Puerto Banus is enough to feel a little of that A-list sparkle rubbing off on you.

This luxurious city is a magnet to the wealthy; actors Antonio Banderas and Eva Longoria have homes here, and there’s a long-standing association with the Saudi royal family. In Puerto Banus, you’ll see private yachts with their own helicopters and submarines.

But there’s more to Marbella than people-watching. You can explore the history of the old center, which dates back to pre-Roman times, or book a round of golf at one of the world-class courses. As one of the best beach towns in Spain , you can also try local food in a beach chiringuito , stroll the seafront promenade, bask on the sandy beaches, or head to the hinterland for a hike through nature.

History & Culture

A village is believed to have existed on the site of what’s now Marbella, Spain in the times of the Phoenicians, in the seventh century BC. There’s also evidence that the Romans inhabited the town.

In the eighth century AD, Moorish tribes from North Africa invaded Iberia and ruled southern Spain for centuries, staying in Marbella until 1485. The Moors left behind many elements of their culture, from the city walls to place names, language, and cuisine, all of which continue to shape Andalucia today.

In the 19th century, the main source of income in Marbella was the nearby iron industry, and when that collapsed, fishing. It was only in the 20th century that the town was put on the international jet-setting map. Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, a European aristocrat, bought a beachfront estate and opened it as the Marbella Club in 1954, attracting the first royals and celebrities to the Costa del Sol.

In 1966, a local developer, José Banus, in conjunction with the prince, commissioned an architect to build a marina, Puerto Banus, along the coast, which accommodates some of the biggest superyachts in the world.

Everybody who was anybody came to Marbella, from Grace Kelly and Brigitte Bardot to Sean Connery. The town continues to thrive today as one of the most glamorous locations in Spain, with a multicultural year-round community.

Wildlife & Nature

While you’re unlikely to spot wildlife in the urban area, there is plenty of natural beauty to be found close to Marbella. The Eco Reserva Ojén is just 10 minutes’ drive from the town and makes a good trip with kids; you’ll see mouflon, deer, and Spanish ibex roaming free here. Take a 4×4 safari with a guide, or follow the wooded hiking trails.

With time to spare, you could tackle the hike up La Concha, the shell-shaped mountain that overlooks the town. Here, you’ll wander through pine and chestnut forests and may encounter goats, foxes, wild boar, and griffon vultures. On a clear day, there are views as far as Gibraltar and Morocco from the top.

It’s possible to join a dolphin-spotting cruise from Marbella, too. Sightings aren’t guaranteed, but there is a thriving population of marine mammals in the sea here. You could spot common, striped, and bottlenose dolphins with an eagle-eyed guide. Further along the coast, towards Gibraltar, there are also pods of resident orca.

Tips for Visiting Marbella

If you’re going to eat and drink in Marbella, choose your venue carefully, as prices can be inflated. Any restaurant in a back street, away from the main tourist thoroughfares, is likely to be more competitively priced.

Sherry is drunk here as a traditional aperitif, particularly the dry, white manzanilla, which is served chilled. If you’re drinking in a traditional tapas bar, don’t be surprised if a small, free plate of food arrives with every round of drinks. This is typical of Andalucia and is not entirely about generosity; the theory is that salty snacks make you thirsty, so you’ll order more drinks.

You can pay for plates of tapas , too, which are supposed to be shared. If you’re hungry, raciones are slightly larger sharing plates.

Southern Spain gets extremely hot in summer, so do as the locals do and pace yourself. Take a siesta in the middle of the day, or relax in the shade of a beach umbrella. Some local shops may close for lunch, although less so in the big shopping malls.

Things to Do & Attractions in Marbella, Spain

Explore the old town.

Marbella’s casco antiguo , or historic center, is typically Andalucian, with low-rise, whitewashed buildings, cobblestone squares, and local bars with tables spilling out onto the sidewalk.

The Plaza de Los Naranjos (Orange Tree Square) is the heart of the city, lined with fragrant orange trees. You’ll see some impressively old buildings here; the square itself dates back to 1485, while the Town Hall is from the 16th century and the Casa del Corregidor, the 17th century.

Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation

A couple of minutes’ walk from the Plaza de los Naranjos is the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, or the Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation, a 400-year-old whitewashed church built on the site of a former mosque.

It’s worth taking a look at the church’s interior. Walk through the rococo-sculpted front entrance into a world of gilded cherubs and opulently decorated chapels. There’s an impressive, 5,000-pipe organ, too.

Visit the Museum of Spanish Contemporary Engraving

Picasso, Miró, and Dalí are more famous for their paintings and sketches, but you’ll find examples from each in the Museo Del Grabado, which has an impressive collection of lithographs, etchings, stencils, and digital prints.

The museum is housed in a Renaissance building that was the mayor’s home before it was donated to the city to serve as a hospital. Later, it was refurbished as a museum. While a visit here is something of a specialist interest, the 4,000-strong collection is regarded as one of the finest in Spain, and there are regular workshops and organized activities.

Head for the Beach

The coast around Marbella is lined with sandy beaches, which vary from super-hip and busy to peaceful and relatively undeveloped. The sand on the Costa del Sol is coarse and dark gold in color, while the sea floor slopes away gently.

El Ancón is on the Golden Mile, backed by palm trees and villas, and not too busy apart from in peak season. Victor’s Beach Bar is a popular and long-established haunt here.

La Venus is right in the city center, with thatched sun umbrellas giving it a tropical feel. Nearby Bounty Beach is one of the most fashionable hangouts, with some shade from palm trees if you don’t want to rent an umbrella.

Playa de Nagueles is another people-watching hotspot, next to the swish Puente Romano development to the west of the center. You’ll find everything here, from umbrellas to rent, beach massage, and watersports. There’s a high-end beach restaurant here, La Milla Marbella, which you’ll need to book in advance.

Wander Along the Seafront Promenade

A waterfront promenade lined with palm trees, flowers, and beaches runs around seven and a half miles along the coastline of Marbella, starting at Puerto Bajadilla to the east of the city and extending west all the way to Puerto Banus. It’s part of the much longer Malaga Coastal Path, which winds the length of Malaga Province.

If it’s not too hot, you’ll see joggers and cyclists here, as well as dog walkers and locals out strolling and breathing the sea air. You’ll find outdoor gym equipment, free to use, play areas for kids, and no end of cafés and tapas bars for refreshment. You can always take a detour to one of the beaches for a dip.

Gaze at the Yachts in Puerto Banus

A 20-minute drive along the coast from Marbella is Puerto Banus, a purpose-built yacht marina in the style of a traditional Andalucian village. There’s nothing village-like about the labels here, with high-end boutiques lining the alleys around the yacht basin, but it’s a fun spot for a stroll if you like celebrity-spotting.

The port opened in 1970, at which time there was barely any development along the coast. The vision of its founder, José Banus, was successful, and some of the biggest private yachts in the world are moored here in summer.

If you’re visiting Marbella in the height of summer, when it can be very hot, a fun way to make the journey to Puerto Banus is on the Fly Blue catamaran ferry. This service departs Marbella’s port on the hour and takes 30 minutes, operating from March to November. Book ahead, though.

Play a Round of Golf

The coastline of the Costa del Sol is lined with velvet-green courses that host many high-level tournaments; there are 19 courses within the Marbella municipality alone. Plenty of the courses are open to the public, provided you book ahead and come suitably attired, ideally with your handicap certificate.

Los Naranjos is a beautiful 18-hole course, some of the fairways lined with orange trees, as the name suggests. La Quinta Golf & Country Club, five minutes’ drive from Puerto Banus, is a 27-hole course with three different combinations.

For less experienced players, Cabopino Golf Marbella, a par 71 course, is regarded as one of the most beginner-friendly.

Food & Drink

Restaurants in Marbella

Marbella, like much of the Costa del Sol, is famed for tapas, seafood, gazpacho, which is perfect on a hot day, and ajoblanco , a soup with garlic, almonds, and olive oil.

You’ll find everything from Michelin-starred restaurants to Irish pubs and even a Hard Rock Café here, but the best local food is to be found in tapas bars and the chiringuitos , the more informal beach restaurants.

Restaurante Altamirano, Plaza Altamirano

This local institution has been on the scene for 40 years and is an atmospheric place to try seafood, with an extensive menu. If you only opt for a snack at the bar, try the boquerones , which are tiny, battered anchovies eaten whole.

Taberna La Niña Del Pisto, Calle San Lazaro

Visit this traditional Andalucian bar in the heart of the old town for authentic tapas , with influences from Cordoba, further north. The gazpacho is legendary, while vegetarians will love pisto, a Spanish take on ratatouille, bursting with Mediterranean sunshine and perfect with slices of Manchego cheese and crusty bread.

No visit to southern Spain is complete without a meal in a chiringuito , the seasonal beachfront restaurants that pop up every summer. Siroko, an upscale chiringuito just east of Marbella’s center, offers a modern Mediterranean menu with plenty of sharing dishes, fresh seafood, pizza, and even a vegetarian menu.

You’ll eat right on the beach, toes in the sand. There are DJ tunes in the afternoons and Balinese beds for a siesta after lunch.

Best Time to Visit Marbella, Spain

One of the reasons Spain’s Costa del Sol is so popular is that it’s sunny virtually all year round. As such, there’s a large, permanent community here and none of the out-of-season feel of some places that have more defined seasons.

In the summer months, the weather is hot and dry, with long days of unbroken sunshine and daily highs of around 86°F, or 30°C. This is a time for slow living, gentle strolls, boat trips, and beach time.

Even in November, you can expect temperatures of around 64°F, or 17.8°C, with only occasional rain. The sea cools down in fall, but you’ll still see people on the beaches. Make the most of the cooler weather with long walks, al-fresco lunches, and a relaxed round of golf.

A source exclusively told Page Six in April that the action movie star has not seen Suri since 2012 . (They were last seen together at Disney World that summer.)

“Katie has safeguarded Suri and she’s a devoted mom,” an insider told us. “This is a girl who is a private citizen. She hasn’t lived her life in public.”

Holmes, who filed for divorce from Tom when Suri was only 6 years old in June 2012, revealed in November 2013 court docs that she left the “Jerry Maguire” star “to protect Suri from Scientology ,” a religion that is often referred to as a cult.

“Suri is not a Scientologist and never will be … she deserves love and sympathy,” former Scientology spokesperson Mike Rinder told Page Six.

It all began in the mid-70s when television producer Douglas S. Cramer, who had created the popular television series “Love American Style,” decided to shift his popular comedy vignette series from its studio setting to the decks and vacation venues of a (then) modern cruise ship. The resulting television show, “The Love Boat” has been widely credited with introducing millions of viewers to the concept of contemporary cruise vacations and leading to dramatic expansion of the industry and its global success.

Originally, in searching out a location for the movie pilot of what was to become his Love Boat television series, Cramer found the ideal setting with a cruise line that just happened to operate from its world headquarters in Los Angeles known globally today as Princess Cruises.

After the 1977 pilot show, which was shot aboard the line's original Sun Princess in Mexico, Cramer teamed up with top television producer Aaron Spelling and the rest is history. “The Love Boat” went on to realize phenomenal success, continuing for 10 seasons until 1987 as one of the highest-rated prime-time television shows in the country. Princess Cruises soon became a household name as the primary setting and ocean-going co-star of the popular series and continues to be known as the "Love Boat" cruise line to this day. With ships Pacific Princess and Island Princess the original floating stars of the show, “The Love Boat” was filmed aboard many Princess ships in exotic destinations around the globe. The show, often the catalyst for introducing American viewers to destinations like Sydney, Australia and Opera House, the Great Wall of China, the Acropolis in Athens Greece. Occasional Love Boat television specials have been filmed since the show stopped production.

Actor Gavin MacLeod (Captain Merrill Stubing) remained an enthusiastic fan of cruising while serving as the spokesperson for Princess Cruises for more than 35 years (1986-2021), making him the longest-serving celebrity spokesperson in brand partnership history. Actress Jill Whelan (Vicki Stubing) continues to serve as Celebrations Ambassador and spokesperson for the cruise line.

In 1997, ten years after the show ended its original run, all six original Love Boat cast members -- Gavin MacLeod (Captain Stubing) , Fred Grandy (Yeoman Purser, Burl ‘Gopher’ Smith) , Ted Lange (Isaac ‘The Bartender’ Washington), Bernie Kopell (Adam ‘Doc’ Bricker), Lauren Tewes (Julie McCoy, Your Cruise Director) and Jill Whelan (Vicki Stubing, The Captain’s Daughter) -- reunited for the first time in more than a decade for the official naming ceremony and christening of Dawn Princess in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

In 1998 “The Love Boat” popularity was revived with a new version of the show introduced by Spelling Television. “Love Boat: The Next Wave,” which ran for two seasons on the UPN network, was also set aboard a Princess ship, the line's new Sun Princess. A new cast of characters served as the Sun Princess officers and crew -- including Robert Urich as Captain Jim Kennedy -- and following the original show's format, a series of guest stars joined the cast each week as cruise vacation guests.

The original cast also came together again in 2014, to kick off the 50th anniversary of Princess Cruises by officially naming and christening the new Regal Princess cruise ship in a star-studded event also featuring 25 guest stars from the show, including Charo, Florence Henderson, Marion Ross, Doris Roberts, Diane Ladd, Loni Anderson and Jamie Farr, to name a few. The cast continued to celebrate the golden anniversary of Princess and cruised down Colorado Blvd in Pasadena, California on the bow of a modern Princess cruise ship float in the iconic Rose Parade on New Year’s Day in 2015.

In May 2018, the six cast members of “The Love Boat” and Princess Cruises received an honorary star plaque on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of their contributions to the history of television and support of the preservation of the Walk of Fame.

As a travel writer who cruises with all the major lines, I was excited to travel through the Mediterranean on the new Sun Princess cruise ship in May 2024. I traveled with my mother to celebrate her 76th birthday shortly after the new ship's February debut in Rome . The itinerary we sailed was a unique, one-way offering that departed from Athens, Greece , with visits to ports like Bar, Montenegro; Corfu, Greece; and Messina and Naples, Italy .

A true marvel of modern engineering and ship architecture, Sun Princess boasts a maximum guest capacity of 4,300 and room for 1,600 crew. The Sphere-Class vessel is 1,133 feet long and 200 feet high, with a breadth of 139 feet and 21 total decks. There are 2,157 staterooms, including 80 unique suites with extra space for guests.

Standout features include a three-floor main dining area, the Princess Arena with capacity for 990 guests and a 250-person entertainment space known as The Dome. Sun Princess itineraries for 2024 and 2025

While Sun Princess is scheduled to cruise the Mediterranean through September 2024, the ship will cross the Atlantic on its way to Fort Lauderdale, Florida , by October for the winter cruise season.

From this new homeport, Sun Princess will offer seven-day Caribbean cruises with the stops in Honduras, Belize , Mexico, the Bahamas , the Dominican Republic, and Turks & Caicos through March 2025.

Sun Princess will then embark on a 14-day Spanish Passage voyage in March 2025, which ends in Barcelona, Spain , and repositions the ship for its summer in the Mediterranean. At that point, cruisers can book a range of lengthy Mediterranean options over various dates, which include stops in Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Italy, France, Spain and more.

Who should sail on Sun Princess?

While most people may think of Princess Cruises as a cruise line for baby boomers, Sun Princess aims to attract a younger, livelier crowd. This is immediately apparent when walking around the ship's common areas; Sun Princess boasts bold color schemes, endless windows, sparkling lights and a more modern central piazza than other Princess ships.

While my Mediterranean sailing largely consisted of adult travelers, Sun Princess will likely attract more families on its Caribbean itineraries. The ship's layout is ideal for parents with children of all ages, and amenities geared specifically toward kids abound. It all starts with the ship's Park19 family area, which features a huge climbing structure, a splash zone, a recreational court, a jogging court and more. Sun Princess also has three dedicated youth clubs: Firefly Park Kids Club (ages 3 to 7, with a separate play area for babies and toddlers 6 months and older), Neon Grove Tweens Club (ages 8 to 12) and The Underground Teen Lounge (ages 13 to 17).

What's interesting about Sun Princess is that it still has so much to offer more mature travelers, including couples who want to enjoy a romantic, upscale vacation. This is shown in the ship's elevated dining venues, expansive casino and luxurious spa. Sun Princess also offers the Sanctuary Collection of rooms and suites, which offer more amenities and spaces to relax on the ship.

Travelers who book a room in the Sanctuary Collection get their pick of a nicer selection of rooms, a premium beverage package, access to a private restaurant and pool deck and a more personalized experience overall. Think of the Sanctuary Collection suites as an alternative to MSC Cruises Yacht Club cabins – the biggest difference being that the venues available to cruisers in these cabins are spread throughout the ship.

The stateroom

I stayed in one of the new Cabana Mini-Suites on the Sun Princess, which I would book again in a heartbeat. These rooms are a take on the classic balcony cabin most cruisers expect, but with a twist. In addition to an outdoor balcony, Cabana Mini-Suites have a separate indoor-outdoor cabana-like area with a flat-screen television.

This extra space means the new Cabana Mini-Suites are much longer from one end to the other than a traditional balcony stateroom. The additional space is nice to have whether you want more room for storage or a separate place to read or relax while your cabinmate naps. My mom sat in our cabana area and read several times while I showered and got ready for dinner, and she even took a nap out there while I worked on my computer in our stateroom.

Regardless of the stateroom you book, know that Sun Princess cabins feature soft, neutral tones and plenty of closet space. Power outlets are abundant, and there are all kinds of nooks and crannies for storage. Cabin types on Sun Princess include the following:

Interior Cabins (136 to 145 square feet)

Basic interior rooms offer a queen bed or two small twin beds, a flat-panel television, a refrigerator, and a private bathroom with a shower. These are the most affordable cabins on the ship, and they work best for guests who just want a place to relax and sleep.

Premium Oceanview (212 square feet)

Ocean-view cabins have slightly more space than interior rooms, but they still lack a balcony. These rooms feature a queen bed or two twin configurations, a large flat-screen television, a refrigerator, and more floor and storage space.

Deluxe Balcony (235 square feet, including balcony)

Balcony cabins offer more space than ocean-view rooms due to the addition of a spacious balcony with outdoor seating. Balcony cabins can also come in a queen bed or two twin configuration and have a large flat-screen television, a refrigerator, and more floor and storage space.

Mini-Suite (303 square feet, including balcony)

Mini-Suites are essentially large balcony cabins with more storage space, more closet space and more floor space. These rooms have all the amenities of other cabins but include two flat-screen televisions (one for the bedroom area and another for couch viewing).

Cabana Mini-Suite (329 square feet, including balcony and cabana)

These rooms add the indoor-outdoor space of the cabana adjacent to the outdoor balcony. The cabana area has seating for several people and its own flat-screen television (in addition to the in-room TV).

Signature Suites (304 to 636 square feet, including balcony)

Signature Suites range in size and include larger balconies with premium furniture, two flat-screen televisions, a more spacious bathroom with a separate tub and shower, and dedicated sleeping and living areas.

Signature Sky Suites (1,262 square feet, including balcony)

Princess Cruises Signature Sky Suites are the largest staterooms across all Princess vessels, and they have all the bells and whistles you can imagine. Standout features of Sky Suites include separate living and dining areas; huge, luxurious bathrooms; and Nespresso coffee machines.

Best amenities on Sun Princess

Since my itinerary on the Sun Princess cruise ship included multiple port stops, I didn't get to experience everything the ship had to offer. However, what I did experience was worth it – from the nonstop entertainment in the piazza to over-the-top dining features. Some of my standout experiences include:

Part dinner and part magic show, Spellbound by Magic Castle is bookable for an additional charge. The experience begins with a small group dinner with drink pairings, then moves to a hidden bar area of the ship, where the magic begins. The bar itself features magical artifacts and vintage curiosities, a "ghost" pianist, and an incredible drink menu designed to wow and delight guests. Some drinks were served in cages, golden owls and elaborate chests with dry ice.

Magic came in the form of intriguing card tricks and disappearing acts at the bar, plus a separate stage area where crowd participation helped facilitate the illusions. I don't want to give anything more than that away – you must simply experience it for yourself. Though I thought Spellbound was slightly cheesy at times, I thoroughly enjoyed the dinner and show and feel it was worth the added cost.

The Dome on the Sun Princess is part pool area and part stage. Guests can swim in a unique indoor-outdoor pool by day and watch entertainers dance in the evening, with alluring lighting effects and a cozy, intimate atmosphere.

I watched an acrobatics show in The Dome from the comfort of a padded lounge chair and thought the venue was the place to be.

Princess Arena

The Princess Arena is a circular stage area that holds up to 990 guests. Shows on offer include multifaceted stage productions and acrobatic features with plenty of surprises.

Fitness center

The Sun Princess' fitness center was huge and featured a range of treadmills, stair climbers, weights and machines to choose from. I never had trouble securing a treadmill at any time, even though I've had to wait and fight crowds for machines on other cruise ships.

I also loved the expansive walking track on the ship, which was constantly in use by both serious exercisers and cruisers walking leisurely to enjoy the views. I used the walking track every morning for at least an hour; I found it much more spacious and usable than other ship walking tracks, which are often congested and never quite wide enough.

The ship also features a Fitness Studio with guided classes, but I did not use it during my trip.

Sun Princess features five large pools and nine hot tubs. There are two pools on the lido deck, plus an indoor-outdoor pool in The Dome, a Sanctuary pool (for Sanctuary Collection guests only) and a wake-view infinity pool.

Medallion services

Princess MedallionClass is one of the coolest and most convenient amenities at sea. In place of a traditional cruise card, Princess gives you a small wearable device to bring with you around the ship and on shore. The medallion tracks your physical location on the ship, which allows you to order services and deliveries on board no matter where you are. Medallion delivery options range from food and drinks to extra pillows or bottled water.

I ordered room service through my medallion multiple times and hot, fresh food arrived in my cabin in less than 20 minutes. Meanwhile, drinks were delivered to our cabin and elsewhere on the ship in less than five minutes.

MedallionNet

Princess' Wi-Fi at sea (MedallionNet) is the fastest internet service I have ever used on a cruise ship. The internet was fast and reliable enough for me to complete some work while on board, which is not the norm on cruise ships.

Best dining venues Sun Princess

Sun Princess features 30 dining and bar options, many of which are included in the base cruise fare. Complimentary dining venues on Sun Princess include three traditional dining rooms, The Eatery (a take on the classic buffet, but with staff service), a café for coffee and light bites, The Lido (serving up salads, pizza and more) and the Promenade Dining grill.

Specialty dining options for an extra charge range from O'Malley's Irish Pub to a sushi spot to steak, seafood and Italian restaurants. For an extra special experience, head to Love by Britto to indulge in fine dining, or opt for Umai hot pot or teppanyaki venues. Meanwhile, bars on Sun Princess include Bellini's Cocktail Bar, Sea View Bar, The MIX and more.

My personal favorite dining experiences included:

My Spellbound dinner was excellent, even though the menu is fairly brief. I enjoyed a delicious shrimp cocktail and seafood entree, followed by a vegan dessert (I'm allergic to dairy and the ship happily accommodated). What stood out for me with Spellbound, at least food-wise, was the eclectic selection of drink pairings offered with the meal. It started with a caprese salad cocktail that tasted like tomatoes and balsamic vinegar in a strange, delicious way, then moved on to the spooky concoctions offered in the Spellbound bar.

Crown Grill

Crown Grill, a specialty dining venue, is not unique to Sun Princess, but it is the cruise line's most popular steakhouse brand. My mom and I had a delicious meal here for her birthday that included a Mediterranean-style spiny lobster cake, Chilean sea bass and a huge (surprise) birthday cake delivered to our table.

The Catch by Rudi

The Catch by Rudi is the ship's specialty dining seafood restaurant. Here, I dined on a delicious shrimp cocktail and the catch of the day (a grilled dorado filet). Everything was fresh and the meal was exceptional from start to finish.

I loved The Eatery, the ship's buffet-style dining option. The main difference between this venue and more traditional cruise ship buffets is that you're served by staff instead of serving yourself, which I prefer. The Eatery featured a rotating selection of exceptional main courses (seafood, chicken, beef and ethnic options), salads, appetizers and delicious desserts. It even had a vegan section and an easy-to-find selection of gluten-free offerings.

Best excursions on Sun Princess

The best excursions on Sun Princess vary depending on where you're going on your cruise – the Caribbean or various Europe destinations. Here's an overview of some excellent excursions offered aboard Sun Princess, a few of which I did myself.

Corfu, Greece

Catamaran Coastal Cruise & Swim: This easy excursion lets you see Corfu from the sea and get out into the water for some snorkeling and swimming. I picked this excursion so we could relax for one day and avoid a lot of walking, and it delivered. A delicious lunch with an open bar was served on board as we sailed around the island taking in some of Corfu's most beautiful sights.

Naples, Italy

Sorrento & Amalfi Coast Cruise: No trip to this region of Italy is complete without a stop in the Amalfi Coast . This excursion was a long one (eight to nine hours) with lots of walking and bus time, but the views of this dynamic coast and time spent in Amalfi and Sorrento made the travel time well worth it.

The look and feel of this vessel are younger and livelier compared to other Princess ships I have sailed on. Gone are the hallways filled with cruisers knitting and playing cards; in their place, you'll find dancing, entertainment, music and activities around the clock.

When it comes to Sun Princess dining, every meal I had on board was either very good or excellent. You don't even have to opt for an extra-cost specialty dining venue to get a good meal. The Eatery and the regular dining rooms feature fresh, seasonal foods that are more than enough for the average palate to enjoy.

Caribbean itineraries on offer later this year (and into 2025) start at around $660 per person for an interior cabin, and Princess features an endless roster of sales throughout the year. If you're looking for a new cruising experience and want to give Princess a try (or another chance), Sun Princess is more than worthy of your consideration.
