So I need to replace the crankshaft position sensor in my 2012 Dodge Journey SE with a 2.4L engine, but I cannot for the life of me find the thing on the engine to do so. I have asked Autozone and O'Reillys as well as the mechanics at my local Dodge dealership. I have also scoured the Internet, exhausting all results from Google and Youtube. Sadly, I have also asked anyone that should be "in the know" as well. This part just does not want to be found! Any help would be greatly appreciated as my wife and I are borrowing my mothers car until this is fixed. Running everybody back and forth from work and whatnot with three kids in tow is not fun.

The Crankshaft Position Sensor is in the rear of the engine block near the transmission.

Remove the engine cover (1).

JS GAS AIR BOX

Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.

Remove the air cleaner body (1) (Refer to Engine/Air Intake System/BODY, Air Cleaner - Removal)(Refer To List 1) .

Disengage the upstream O2 sensor wire harness retainer (1) and crankshaft position sensor wire harness retainer (2) from the heat shield (3).

Remove one nut (1) and two heat shield retaining bolts (2).

Remove heat shield (3).

SENSOR LOCATION

Remove the crankshaft position sensor mounting bolt.

Remove sensor with the wire harness attached.

Unlock and disconnect the electrical connector from the crankshaft position sensor.

well i just google it and found the location on 2.4 engine and if your local dodge dealer doesn't know where it is then you need to go to a different dealership they should be able to help you ,check with the parts guy at the dealer they usually have books with diagrams to help you ....good luck

Thank you for the quick response! So quick in fact that I was unable to post again on my computer (op was from my phone so brief) with more details on my situation. The problem now is these directions are an exact match for the ones I got from the Dodge dealership. I took them home and followed them, taking off the engine shield and removing the air cleaner. Then I hit a wall in that there is no heat shield beneath the air cleaner. Not only is there no heat shield in the way, but there is also nothing that looks like the CPS sticking out of the engine/transmission here. Maybe it is there and I am missing it? I will post again with a picture of this area ASAP if that will help.

Well I have also googled the hell out of this. The problem is you search for dodge journey and 80% of what comes back isn't dodge journeys at all. Then what is labeled as dodge journey isn't always a picture for one. They are just mislabeled. Then for the pictures that actually look like my engine, the part is not anywhere near where the diagram says it should be.

So this diagram says it is beneath the engine on the passenger side (as I see it), while the directions i got from Dodge and the ones linked in the thread both say it is on the driver side of the engine beneath the air cleaner...

And this is why I'm so confused. Ugh

good luck ,cars are getting so confusing now, wont even try to change the plugs on these journeys .....

Crankshaft  position sensor

i have looked under the air intake on drivers side and have looked under back of engine on passenger side, still cannot find. Has anyone found it and can they post a real pic of its location or just point where it's at?  Please help. Thank you

Does the 2008 Dodge Avenger 2.4 have a MAF sensor?

unfortunatly when u pull codes. code p0365 definition says cam sensor bank 1 sensor 2 . i agree as to this engine only having one bank but is this intake or exhaust. stupid code definitions piss me off.

I just replaced both my cam sensors on my 2013 200 2.4 ….intake cam is on front (front side of engine) above intake on right if facing vehicle and exhaust cam is almost directly behind it on the exhaust side (rear of engine) Hope this helps!

Can you go into depth as too which solenoid is which like would bank one or bank 2 be on the right hand or left hand side

It’s a 4 cylinder engine there is only one bank you have an intake solenoid and an exhaust solenoid because it’s a DOHC VVT engine

The crankshaft position sensor monitors crankshaft position, angle, and engine RPM, and transmits this information to the engine control module (ECM). This information is used to make adjustments to ignition and fuel injector timing to maintain engine performance and efficiency. The ECM also receives data from the camshaft position sensor, which allows the crankshaft and camshaft in an engine to be synchronized if it is equipped with variable valve timing (VVT). Crankshaft position sensors are typically Hall Effect sensors, meaning that they use an electromagnet to generate a field that changes as it nears and moves away from a toothed gear or wheel. Over time, the crankshaft sensor may become weak or fail entirely, which can lead to inconsistent or weak signals being sent to the engine computer. A bad crankshaft position sensor won't supply any signal to the ECM at all, but even a weak signal can prevent your engine from operating at its best. A damaged or failing crankshaft position sensor can cause problems with acceleration since the ignition and fuel timing may not be adjusted properly, or you may also notice rough idle, engine misfires , stalling, or poor gas mileage. Dodge Journey P0017: Crank/Cam Position Correlation – Bank 1 Sensor “B”

P0017 in the Dodge Journey is predominantly caused by a few different things. It is typically thrown when the Crankshaft Position Sensor and the Camshaft Position Sensor are out of alignment by a certain number of degrees, or if there is an issue with the wiring, or one of the sensors themselves may have gone bad. We’ll explore the symptoms and causes directly below.

P0017 refers to which camshaft position sensor is out of time with the Crankshaft. In this case it’s sensor “B”, Sensor “A” throws P0016

P0017 Symptoms: Dodge Journey

P0017 should be considered an important trouble code to diagnose and repair. The crank and cam sensors work in tandem to produce the ideal air/fuel ratio for your engine. When this timing is off, the engine will typically not run (or barely run).

Here are the major symptoms of P0017 in the Journey:

• Failure to start
• Rattle coming from the motor
• Service engine soon light
• Engine poorly running

P0017 Causes and Solutions: Dodge Journey

Here are the most common causes of P0017 in the Journey, as well as diagnostic advice, and resources to further explore. It’ll either be a wiring issue, or it’ll be a physical problem (bad reluctor or timing chain jumped).

Wiring Issues

One of the most common causes of P0017 in any vehicle is going to be wiring issues. You’ll want to inspect the wiring harness for visible damage. A lot of the harness leading to and from the Crank/Cam sensors is going to be exposed to hot exhaust and vibration. This is a great place to start diagnosing P0017 in your Journey. It’s quick and easy to do this before moving on to the sensors themselves.

Make sure to check the harness where it plugs into both sensors as well.

Bad Sensors

After examining the wiring harness, it would be time to check the sensors themselves. Using a simple voltage tester, you’ll be able to determine whether or not they are functioning correctly. We linked to a great video showing you how to do so directly below.

The timing chain or belt will throw cause P0017 to throw. This will happen when it has stretched or jumped a tooth or two. If it jumps more than a few teeth, the odds are that the engine itself will not run at all.

If you’ve recently changed the timing chain, it may very well have not been aligned properly on install. Many manufacturers (particularly Japanese Automakers) have very strict timing chain service intervals. If it’s been too long, it may jump a few teeth. Even the slightest misalignment can cause P0017.

Timing Chain Jumped Symptoms and Diagnosis

Crank or Cam Tone/Reluctor Ring

The Crankshaft Sensor is going to use a tone or reluctor ring to determine the position of the Crank. This ring uses notches that are scanned by the Crank Sensor in order to get an accurate position.

If this ring fails, the Journey will not be able to get an exact crank position. The camshaft typically will have a ring that provides the same function.

Often when a reluctor ring goes bad, it’ll rattle quite a lot. That is a very good indication that there is an issue with it.
