City and Colour announce theatre shows as part of 2023 tour

Plenty of people are very excited about City And Colour ’s return to Australia over summer and for good reason.

Dallas Green has traditionally been a frequent visitor to Australia with his more mellow project (he also fronts hardcore heroes Alexisonfire) and his audience over here is immense. Though for various reasons, his return early in the New Year will give most fans their first chance to see City and Colour in Australia in seven long years (he performed a one-off Brisbane show in 2019).

Already locked in for a string of coastal dates as a part of the excellent SummerSalt line-up early next year, City and Colour have now locked in some theatre dates along the east coast to allow fans a more intimate experience.

Green’s return comes before any new music has emerged from his forthcoming seventh album. We’re led to believe he has been working on a bunch of new material, so perhaps Australian fans can expect to hear some new treasures.

They can certainly expect the best parts of his six-album catalogue thus far, which has seen him revered as one of modern indie’s most endearing and emotive songwriters. His appeal is broad and his fans are eager. These should be very special performances for artist and audience alike.

Catch City and Colour playing the following shows. SummerSalt tickets are on sale now, theatre shows will be on sale from 1pm Wednesday 2 November.

Known artistically as City and Colour, acoustic/folk singer Dallas Green hails from Ontario, Canada. He was also a member of the folk band Alexisonfire from 2001 to 2012.

Green has been playing guitar and writing music since he was a teen and put out free downloads of his songs on the Internet in 2004. He reworked some of the songs to form a full length album called “Sometimes” and released it under alias City and Colour (which cleverly refers to his first and last name respectively). Los Angeles based label Vagrant Records re-released the album on 13 January 2009.

Green’s sophomore album “Bring Me Your Love” was released on 12 February 2008 with a more folk sound due to additional instruments like the harmonica and the banjo played by members of the band Attack in Black. He also collaborated with Canadian singer Gordon Downie on the single “Sleeping Sickness.” The album’s name is an ode to a short story by Charles Bukowski. Green supported his album with his first tour in the U.S., opening for bands Tegan and Sara and Girl in a Coma. He also toured in the UK, supporting rock artist P!nk in 2010 performing two new singles “Silver and Gold” and “Oh Sister.”

Green’s single “Fragile Bird” from his album “Little Hell” is his highest charting single in Canada, reaching No. 1 on the alternative/rock chart in 2011. The song also received widespread attention on the Australian radio station Triple J. Green confirms Neil Young has been a major musical influence on his songwriting and musical style.

Live reviews

Dallas Green (aka City and Colour) is probably my favourite singer-songwriter still living. I was a huge fan of his former post-hardcore band Alexisonfire, for which he played guitar and provided clean vocals, and as sad as I was to see them go them separate ways, Green was always destined for greater things. His singing voice is nothing short of angelic – he has hands-down the most captivating live vocals I have ever heard. Not only does he boast a formidable range – everything from a gruff country croon to a soaring falsetto – but his ear for a melody is the most on-point since the late, great Elliott Smith. I first saw him live at The Forum in London in 2010 and his passionate delivery blew me away. His albums are predominantly made up of melodic folk, but live a fully backing band adds rock’n’roll and blues to elevate his acoustic ballads above standard singer-songwriter fare. But the time I next saw him, the following year at London’s Roundhouse, his confidence had grown so much that the show incorporated heavier guitar rock not a million miles away from Alexisonfire (or at least the their lighter side). But the moment every fan hopes for when going to a City and Colour show is when he stands solo on the stage and delivers his early, heart-on-sleeve acoustic ballads – Green’s ‘Comin’ Home’, ‘Sometimes (I Wish)’ and ‘Day Old Hate’ are incredibly rewarding to see performed in the flesh. In short: I love City and Colour.

You have to imagine there were a fair few Alexisonfire fans who got a serious shock when the band’s original singer, Dallas Green, unveiled City and Colour as his solo project. The Canadians veered between hardcore and screamo, so few of them can have reasonably expected a mellow, introspective folk rock outfit to effectively rise from their ashes. That’s precisely what Green’s been gravitating towards since, though, with four records already under his belt and a new look - glasses and a fedora - more befitting the quiet-man persona he’s embraced. On stage, flanked by a full band, Green actually keeps things fairly diverse; granted, he’s yet to be tempted to throw in any full-borne renditions of Alexisonfire classics, but he does veer between no-frills acoustic balladry - see the epic "What Makes a Man" - and Iron and Wine-esque, pseudo-country noodling. You get the impression that he’s ultimately cultivated a very different kind of fanbase to the one he was used to playing to back in his hardcore days, but what unites them is a similar level of dedication; Green’s certainly the common denominator, and perhaps you can put that down to his lyrics - when he’s performing, he’s often laying himself bare in the process.

Paradiso Amsterdam 2020-02-23. Dallas Green (City and Colour) decided to do this tour solo instead of playing with a band. The reason to do so was the sad loss of his friend and collaborator Karl ''horse'' Bareham. Most songs he did play solo while some were accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Matt Kelly on guitar, piano or pedal steel guitar. This all made it very intimate and personal, which was picked up by a warm and enthusiastic audience that helped him out by singing along. He really did touch many hearts tonight with his beautiful songs, which of course sounded different, more personal, stripped of all electric instruments and effects. It was a great concert. Impressive!

I have seen City and Colour as well as Alexisonfire many times. I have even had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Green. He is a gem with the voice of an angel. There hasn't been an artist that moved me lyrically to this degree since Joni Mitchell... circa the BLUE album. That being said...the opening acts were great...particularly Tokyo Police Club and Young the Giant. But... City and Colour was utterly fantastic...and the universe must agree there were fireworks and flights of birds that magically appeared during the performance...at least it felt like magic...heaven sent.

What an amazing City & Colour show, I'm still smiling from ear to ear! Dallas Green is an amazing musician and tonight's show was a wonderful celebration of that. The backdrop of the Buffalo waterfront made for a magical experience. The sound was incredible and his band rocked the house. The lights were another incredible addition to this year's tour. Thanks for an amazing show and a fantastic evening of live music!

Openers Young the Giant & Tokyo Police Club also put on great shows. All around a great mix of talents.

Dallas Green!! Amazing wether it’s city and colour or alexisonfire, he does not disappoint. My wife and I saw him years ago the night we Got engaged. He ended the night with the girl as his encore and played we found in each other in the dark which really hits home for us. I hope he comes back near us so we could him live again. Dallas Green live is just as if not better than on a recording. He’s the only artist that I have bought every vinyl for his music. Amazing!!!!

The best ever concert! The band were amazing, Dallas Green outstanding and the whole lighting show was truly the best I have ever seen. Lucy Rose and her band were supporting and Dallas popped out halfway through to duet with her, such a nice bloke. Fantastic venue ( The Dome Concert Hall, Brighton ) Brilliant night and can't wait til next time! City and Colour played both new and old songs and it was all superb!!!!!

City and Colour was so great that the show seemed too short. I wish there was an intermission to make it feel longer than what it seemed to me. Regardless, I was satisfied and Dallas sounded exactly the same as his recordings. I don't know any other artist that has the same voice and his writing is excellent. I'm surprised he doesn't have as many following as other group, but I'm sure that's gonna change.

This was my second show and I was not left short of having an AMAZING TIME! Dallas Green is one of the most talented musicians out there and I believe that everyone should go to at least one of his shows. He is a role model and impacts my life daily with his music and I have been a fan for almost 10 years now and I plan on attending my 3rd show this august while he performs in Denver! I cannot wait!

City and Color played a mesmerizing show at First Ave in Minneapolis. Dallas and the band played perfectly, and offered great respect to the venue, as well as thoughtful words to the First Ave team members in honoring the loss of one of their beloved friends through a dedicated song. It's not all the time that a band can come in and play as if they are right at home, but they certainly did!

[Review] City and Colour @ Forum Theatre, Melbourne 09/02/2023

Post Image

It’s been seven long years since Canadian, alt-rock singer-songwriter Dallas Green last graced Australian shores, and it was no wonder his one-night-only at The Forum was filled to the brink. Being recognisable to Aussie audiences for his solo venture City and Colour , this was set to be a triumphant return - a night of some of the strongest rock instrumentals layered with signature heart-wrenching lyricism.

Dallas’ audiences are unmistakable. Humble and kind, yet visibly so passionate about the music. Entering the space felt safe, calm and familiar – quite abnormal for a rock show – with the buzz of individuals reconnecting over a shared love of live music, and a heavy passion for rock.

Many artists on a solo venture will try to distance themselves from their past, but having Dooms Children open the show was the perfect decision. Old bandmate and much loved ‘brother’ Wade MacNeil’s solo project is heavy psychedelia, with a hint of blues and hard-hitting lyricism – and the crowd adored it.

As the five-piece band of old rockers entered the stage, you could tell they’d been here before. The quiet confidence, steady beat, and emotive guitar riffs felt grounded and calming, before suddenly being hit with a surge of husky vocals chanting haunting lyrics. The entire set boasted a highly cinematic feel – with the broad emotions of band being easily read, and exceedingly relatable.

Dooms Children’s set closely mimicked being pulled under vicious waves, for every time you’d come up for air, an entirely new and consuming sound would follow. There was something so fresh about the psychedelic feel of the contrasting sounds between the instruments; and the dimly lit, slow moving spotlights and smoke added to the dazed and confused sensation that followed the songs.

Psyche Hospital Blues was a standout, with distorted keys and mumbled vocals creating the signature psychedelic sound. Each individual instrument could be heard and stood perfectly alone, but when brought together with the band created something totally moving. The whole set connected perfectly like one long film.

Following was several songs from the breakout, self-titled album. Skeleton Beach , a calm and melodic tune showcased some gorgeous harmonies, whilst Wade worked the crowd to the palm of his hand – smirking proudly as the lyrics were being sung out with such passion. Friend of the Devil closed out the set, filled with recognisable descending scales, creating a sense of security before throwing the crowd off with ambiguous, seemingly random notes and lyrics. ‘A friend of the devil is a friend of mine’ being chanted repetitively, with steadily increasing tempo backing the drawn-out rock jam. Being so brazenly comfortable with his guitar and his vocals, Dooms Children is sure to be a talking point throughout the rock community for years to come.

The tension was palpable as The Forum drew quiet, craving the main act of the night, City and Colour .  With the backing band returning, front man Dallas Green made his humble beginning, with ‘thanks for being here’ being the only words needed – as the music to come would speak for itself.

Kicking off with Meant to Be, the slow-moving autumn colours paired with acoustic guitar and sublime vocals - the crowd enthralled. From the outset Dallas’ vocal range was astonishing, the voice that has cemented him as one of the greats of rock music. The song’s intensity increased steadily, mimicking a heavy heartbeat and directing the unconscious movement of the crowd.

Moving uninterrupted from one song to the next, Living in Lightning was paired with an enchanting ceiling of purple light, fitting for the slow and steady beat, overlays of gorgeous bass riffs, and heavy ringing electric guitar. Hypnotic, repetitive keys moved steadily into his next song. ‘When I think of fates worse than death, all I can think of was something you said’, Thirst details an intimate relationship, and the vulnerabilities in self-criticism. This universal feeling could be seen on the faces of the band as they put their heart and soul into the jarring, heavy rock ballad.

The music never ceased, as the band rolled into the sultry, bass-driven fan-favourite, Northern Blues. A complete drop of light between verse and chorus providing a visual representation of the lyrics. Strangers was the point of the night where it was clear the audience were becoming totally immersed in the music, almost hypnotised by the synchronicity of the band. Every hit of the kick drum prompting the crowd’s uninhibited movement.

After a half hour of interminable music, Dallas took to the mic to address the crowd. ‘This song is about trying to be kinder to each other’… his message is clear, nothing further needed to be said. We Found Each Other in the Dark was angelic, and a highlight of the evening.

A complete change of pace came with the emotionally charged, guitar heavy, Weightless . Paired with piercing red strobe, the ironic weight of the song rocked the venue with such velocity, building towards an abrupt blackout. ‘I’m tired of everyone saying I’m this sad motherfucker… I’m just singing about what’s real’ – These words reigned so true as Hello, I’m in Delaware provided a moving commentary on fame and living life on the road. The emotion of Dallas’ music is not only drawn from the content of his lyrics, but in the authenticity they are delivered with.

Drawing towards the end of the set, Underground, the band’s latest record was welcomed with great reception. A new sound for the group, being highly layered and multidimensional, filled the room with a fresh, uplifted impression. A change of pace, Sorrowing Man packed with intimate jams left the crowd without a word, but with the hum of a final note ringing out – there was a thirst for more as the band departed the stage.

When City and Colour returned moments later for a generous encore, the energy hit a new high with the crowd suddenly surging forward, being drawn into the final songs of the night like a moth to a flame. The mainly acoustic encore provided space for the fans to sing side-by-side with the band. Comin’ Home and The Girl were highly nostalgic and imprinted on the hearts of his fans, as evident in every word and harmony that bounced from Dallas to the crowd, and then came bounding right back at him.

The stage lit up for the final song, the audience in clear view of the band. Sleeping Sickness left us with what did not feel like a ‘goodbye’, but a ‘see you soon’. A beautiful way of sending out what had been a breathtaking night. Above all else, the superb lyricism and lighting, and the adoring sea of fans - this night was about the music, which can only be described as perfect.

You can still catch City and Colour one more time for this tour in Brisbane.

Tickets for all four shows go on sale at 1pm local time next Wednesday (November 2), with a Frontier Touring presale kicking off at the same time on Monday (October 31). Find tickets for the Brisbane show here , and for the others – plus info on the Frontier pre-sale – here .

He last performed in Australia in 2019, giving a one-off performance as part of that year’s Brisbane Festival. Green is currently working on the seventh City And Colour album, saying in an interview last June that he’d written and demoed an entire record’s worth of material. The project’s last full-length effort, ‘A Pill For Loneliness’, arrived in October of 2019.

Meanwhile, Green returned to the spotlight earlier this year with Alexisonfire ; June saw the post-hardcore legends deliver ‘Otherness’, their first album in 13 years. Flanked by singles like ‘Sans Soleil’ and ‘Sweet Dreams Of Otherness’ , Green and co. self-produced the album in roughly a week, having written the material at the Dine Alone Records clubhouse.

City and Colour Review – Aural Power and Heartfelt Tenderness at Melbourne’s Forum

By Brenton Harris

City and Colour performed at Forum Melbourne on Thursday, 9th February. Brenton Harris reviews.

For droves of music fans around the world, there are few sounds more evocative than Dallas Green’s voice. On a beautiful summer evening in Melbourne, the City and Colour front person used that voice to take a sold-out Forum crowd on a cathartic journey.

Cutting a distinguished figure, the full-bearded Green and his dapper backing band were greeted with rapturous applause before an expectant hush fell upon the room. As Green opened his mouth to sing the opening lines of ‘Meant To Be’, every eye and ear in the room was transfixed. Many had been waiting seven years for this moment, as an unpredictable sequence of events prevented Green and co. from touring Australia.

City and Colour – ‘Meant to Be’

As Green segued into ‘Living in Lightning’ from 2019’s A Pill for Loneliness,  we knew we were in for a special night. ‘Thirst’ from 2013’s The Hurry and the Harm and ‘Northern Blues’ from 2015’s If I Should Go Before You had the room rocking. Green and his bandmates conjured a wall of noise, hammering home the soul-searching distress of the lyrical content. It was enough to touch the heart of even the most seasoned gig-goer.

The juxtaposition of aural power and Green’s gentle and affable between-song banter encapsulated the Canadian songwriter’s identity. The tender side came to the fore during the  Little Hell cut ‘We Found Each Other in the Dark’ and ‘Hello, I’m Delaware’ from City and Colour’s 2005 debut full-length,  Sometimes,  moving several  audience members to tears.

Heartfelt readings of ‘Weightless’ and ‘Waiting…’ had a similar impact, with Green implying that despite what people might think, the latter song is about finding joy by living in the moment. Joy was part of this gig’s journey, but so too was grief.

In our recent interview with Green, he said that City and Colour’s forthcoming record,  The Love Still Held Me Near , is about “feeling broken and torn apart and just trying to figure out how to put the pieces back together”. A powerful performance of the album’s second-single, ‘Underground’, suggested that Green is still working through that process. It was at once haunting and beautiful to witness.

City and Colour – ‘Waiting…’

The broad musical range of City and Colour was on display during the interconnected three-song sequence of ‘ Fragile Bird’, ‘As Much as I Ever Could’ and ‘Sorrowing Man’; the final songs before the encore. Along with showcasing some of Green’s most soaring and intimate vocals, the mini-medley allowed the rest of the band to go to town on some extended jams.

Green re-emerged for a four-song encore, but not before reflecting on his genuine love for Australia. The encore began with City and Colour’s breakout hit, ‘Comin’ Home’, with Green indicating that he has Australia on his mind whenever he sings the song. The injection of the chorus from Alexisonfire’s ‘This Could Be Anywhere In The World’ towards the end of ‘Comin’ Home’ caused one of the loudest sing-alongs of the night.

The resonant love song ‘The Girl’ has been a staple at post-hardcore kids’ weddings for years, and more than a few couples were seen looking gooey-eyed as Green sang of devotion and respect for the one he loves. Heartbreak is also a feature of love, so it was fitting that the sprawling, heartbroken ‘Lover Come Back’ followed, before ‘Sleeping Sickness’ brought the emotional journey to a close.

As Green conducted the Forum audience through the repeated refrain, “Someone come and save my life”, you got the sense that for some, this music may have done exactly that.

City and Colour’s 2024 Canadian arena tour was incredibly strong, with multiple sold-out shows that included Victoria, Edmonton, London, and Oshawa.  The Love Still Held Me Near  was met with high praise from the press. City and Colour wrapped up 2023 with an incredible U.S. tour run in the spring and fall, with sold out shows in major cities such as Denver, LA, San Diego, Phoenix, Portland, Seattle, and many others.

The Love Still Held Me Near  was born out of the most difficult period in Green’s life, including the tragic loss of his best friend in 2019. Green explains, “It’s about digging deep down into yourself and attempting to unearth hope and light in the things that can comfort you through those times. For me that has always been writing and recording music, so that’s exactly what I did.” The depth of Green’s emotions are thoughtfully articulated through these songs in ways that make them so relatable. He continues to solidify the connection with his audience on his seventh album. When you experience a City and Colour performance, that feeling is palpable as fans sing along through the set.

Green and director Michael Maxxis created a full visual album of 12 cinematic videos representing each song on  The Love Still Held Me Near . View all 12 videos  HERE .
