The Oregon pioneering spirit is alive as ever in the Umpqua Valley and wineries of Roseburg Oregon . The first vineyards were planted around 1890. Today’s vineyards are spread throughout the valley in small, history filled towns such as  Roseburg, Oakland, Umpqua, Sutherlin, and Elkton. With over 30 wineries and 70 vineyards there are no shortage of grapes. In fact, there are 1,500 acres of vineyards in the valley. The area is one of the state’s most diverse American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in term of climate ranges allowing it to grow both warm and cool climate grape varieties. Looking for Pinot Noir, Viognier, or Riesling? How about some Merlot, Syrah, or Tempranillo? You will find them here.

In all there are over 40 grape varieties planted by the Umpqua Valley Wine Growers. That has been made possible by the variance of climates within is boundaries- with cooler varieties thriving in the northern part of the valley and warmer varies doing great in the warmer southern end. There are also hundreds of different types of soils in the valley, many of which are excellent for winegrowing. The valley floor levels have mostly heavy clay and alluvial soils, while the hillsides and steps have mixes that include silt and other soil types that are perfect for growing the perfect winemaking grape. With the climate, soil, history, family-owned passion, and attention to detail you’re sure to enjoy exploring the fine offerings of its winemakers.

Dining Near The Wineries Roseburg Oregon

What could be more romantic, or just plain fun, than stopping at the grocery store to get your picnic basket filled! Take it with you and enjoy with your favorite local bottle of Pinot Noir.  If you just feel like hitting the wine route without the extra stop, many of the wineries have a great offering of full meals or small plates to snack on as you taste. Make sure and save room for the great dinning options in the area though.

Want to plan a great dinner afterwards? These country towns will surprise you with fantastic dining options- a revolution in cuisine is at foot near Roseburg Oregon wineries! Roseburg’s True Kitchen+Bar is a must try with their fabulous food, mixologists, and sweet deserts. Brix Grill is a spot that will have you coming back for seconds with its flavor packed scratch made breakfasts. The staff here hustles and does it with a smile. Also, the Parrott House is an absolutely must stop with it a historic Victorian home as its center piece.  It is registered on the National Historic Registry and home of the EST. 1981 Restaurant and Reform Bourbon Bar. If you want atmosphere, the Parrott House has it. Enjoy these any the many other dining offerings that the Umpqua Valley Wine Region has to offer.

Oregon wine Tours

Day trips and activities abound in and around the Umpqua Valley. Whether you want to go off the beaten path and float or fish the river, hike in the mountains, or go for a mountain bike ride- its all here. If you are looking to go out a bit further, they’ve got you covered as a starting point. Oregon’s rugged and beautiful coastline is just a quick drive away. Check out the town of Bandon Oregon . If you are a golfer, the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is  world famous and thinks itself as the true spirit of Scotland’s ancient links. Bandon can be your gateway to the under discovered Oregon Coast.

If you would rather head East from the Umpqua Valley Wine Region, then Crater Lake National Park absolutely cannot be missed. This deep-water crater, in a sleeping volcano, was created when a violent eruption triggered the collapse of a tall peak. It is the deepest lake in the United States and it is so easy to see why people marvel at its purity. Set atop the Cascade Mountain Range it is certainly an experience you will not soon forgot.

There are also options to staying closer to the Umpqua Valley Wine Region. Located just a few miles south of Roseburg is the Wildlife Safari. Either before or after your wine tour, make sure you take some time to see the 600 animals from approximately 100 different species. They are AZA accredited and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums only provides this status to the top 10% of licensed USDA exhibitors. Lion’s, and tigers, and bears oh my!

Looking for something unique and off the beaten path? No need to search for wineries near me on your app- just come see the suprisingly great Roseburg Wineries and let us be you guide!

Wineries & Vineyards

When you open up a bottle of wine and pour yourself a glass, you’re drinking more than just wine — you’re taking in a time and place. Southern Oregon, because of its ideal soil and climate, produces some of the most notable wine in America. In particular, the Umpqua Valley is making an impression on those who seek out unique and high-quality wines.

Spend a few hours in the Umpqua Valley and you’ll begin to understand why the wine here is so exceptional. The rolling hills throughout this region are not only beautiful, but ideal for growing a vast selection of wine grapes. The stunning landscape mixed with the mild, wet winters and Mediterranean-style summers that cycle through the Umpqua Valley create flavor profiles completely unique to the area.

Study the geology and hydrology of the Umpqua Watershed and you’ll see why. Each little valley surrounding Roseburg features a slightly different growing condition for wine grapes. Most of the soil types in the Umpqua American Viticultural Area (AVA) contain stream sediments, marine sedimentary bedrock and volcanic rocks which provide excellent drainage for grape vines.

Wine production in this region dates back to the 1880s, however, due to prohibition in the 1920s wine production stopped. It wasn’t until 1961 that Richard Sommer founded HillCrest Vineyard making it the oldest continually-operating post-prohibition estate winery in Oregon. Sommer was also the first to plant pinot noir vines in Oregon, making it the birthplace of Oregon pinot noir.

This adventurous spirit to try something new is a continual presence at all 27 wineries in the Umpqua Valley. One wine industry innovator in this area is Calvin Scott Henry III of Henry Estates Winery. He developed a unique trellis and canopy-management system that improves the maturation of grapes and the overall quality of the wine. Abacela has been a pioneer of Spanish-style wines in the area. In fact, they were the first Oregon winery to successfully grow and harvest Tempranillo.

As you open a bottle of Umpqua Valley wine take a moment to fully experience the scenery and the moment you are in. Even if you’re a casual wine drinker, who doesn’t use terms like vintage and terroir, there is still something magical about enjoying a really excellent glass of wine on the property where it was grown and produced. Appreciate the climate, landscape and people that produced the wine you’re about to drink, this makes the wine not only taste better, but connects you to something deeper. With so many styles and varieties of wine here, you’re sure to find something you’ll love.

Come visit and pour yourself a glass of the Umpqua Valley.
