Africa is a huge continent with many countries and some are considered dangerous. These are also the best countries to visit for seeing incredible wildlife and scenery. For more information, please contact one of our specialists .

Are African Safaris Dangerous?

African safaris can be exhilarating. Getting up close to animals in the wild is and experience like no other. Most African safaris are conducted in 4WD Land Rovers or Land Cruisers and therefore generally very safe. Some safaris can be done on foot or by Mokoro (traditional canoe) and this can create a higher level of risk however these tours are still considered safe as most animals keep there distant from humans. Guides can also carry rifles to be used as a last resort.

REVIEWS FROM OUR CLIENTS

The small number of participants with Wilderness Travel makes a much more intimate interaction with the areas visited. It was wonderful being in a small group of ten. Our guide’s ability to spot things in the bush was pretty incredible—he found leopards for us (with their kills), lions we would never have seen, and every bird everywhere. Great personality, too!
The trip was even better than we could have imagined. Africa is awe-inspiring, and WT put together an unforgettable trip.
This trip was extraordinarily well planned, making each day value-packed in order to fit in the breadth of exposure to Ethiopia’s historical and cultural heritage. Reflecting on all we were able to see, I am amazed.
The entire trip was first class. The service from the trip team was outstanding. I felt like I was at a five-star hotel rather than out in the African Bush.
We were very excited to be going on safari and all of our expectations were met and exceeded. This was the adventure of a lifetime! Top quality in every way.

Everything You Need to Know

The Great Migration is the largest mass movement of land mammals on Earth, when more than a million wildebeest circle through the Serengeti plains in Tanzania and Kenya. This migration never stops as it circles the plains all year.

There are two main seasons for a Great Migration safari: December-March (Southern Serengeti) and June-October (Northern Serengeti). Both seasons offer their pros and cons, but you truly can’t go wrong with either. We give a detailed description of the differences between these seasons below.

Serengeti National Park map.

There’s so much to see and experience in Tanzania that the design of your trip is especially important. We provided a sample day itinerary so you can know when to expect before you arrive.

A camp tent in Botswana.

There is simply no experience that compares to a mobile safari. A world apart from lodge-based, our mobile camps immerse you deep in Botswana’s most magnificent and wildlife-rich terrain in absolute comfort.

  • Spacious tents are equipped with comfortable beds (no cots!), and en suite private bathrooms with washbasins and hot showers.
  • A private guide, chef, camp manager, tent steward, and camp team stay with you throughout your mobile safari. Our staff-to-guest ratio is 1:1 for the highest quality of service.
  • Thrilling game viewing: our mobile camps have you out in the heart of the parks and close to the wildlife—no long drives back and forth on dusty lodge roads.

There is no wrong time to go on safari in Botswana, however, it is generally accepted that the best game viewing period is from late March to October. Because of the minimal rainfall during this season, the bush turns golden brown and in many areas is beaten flat, so game viewing is easier and animals concentrate around major water sources.

Wilderness Travel pioneered the Lemosho-Crater Camp Route in 1989 and we consider it the best route to the summit. Why? It is the most scenic and least-traveled route up Kilimanjaro. With a full seven days on the ascent, this route also provides maximum time for acclimatization and therefore the greatest chance of reaching to top—we have a 98% summit success rate!

We give a detailed summary all the different climbing options on Kilimanjaro, and explain the difference between each.

A luxurious camp site in Morocco.

One of the best experiences that sets our journeys apart is our private luxury camp in the Sahara. Spacious tents are hung with richly-hued Moroccan fabrics, and there’s a comfortable outdoor sitting area where we can watch the sunset and stargaze beneath a spectacular night sky. Far from the noise and crowds of other camps, you’ll feel as if we have the desert all to ourselves.

The magnificent fort of the Kasbah Ait Benhaddou.

There are four distinct seasons in Morocco, and depending on where in the country you are planning to visit, the time of year can make a big difference. Generally speaking, spring (February to May) and fall (September to November) are the best times to visit the majority of the country, however, if you are heading into the High Atlas Mountains, it is often better to aim for the summer months. See below for a full explanation of Morocco’s different seasons to decide when is best for you.

From lush, green rainforests to stark limestone tsingy formations to the dry spiny desert, Madagascar has a huge range of ecosystems, geography, and microclimates—and every area supports its own endemic species. Berenty, in the south, is the best place to see dancing sifaka lemurs, while Ankarana, in the north, is home to crowned lemurs. See below to compare the differences between the major National Parks and know what to expect from each.

A map of parks in Madagascar.

Madagascar has a tropical climate with many microclimates, so the weather can vary greatly depending on the time of year and region of the country. The north and south tend to be warm and dry, while the highlands, including the capital, Antananarivo, are cooler. The east is mostly rainforest, where wet weather is always a possibility.

The ideal time to visit is between April and November (there are heavy rains from December to March, so travel during that time is not recommended). Each season is unique and offers its own attractions. See below to understand the differences between each month and what to expect with each.

A chart showing weather in Madagascar.

Namibia’s varied landscapes and unique wildlife viewing offer seemingly endless opportunities for exploration—we’ve highlighted our favorite activities below!

People sitting on a hill on a trail in Namibia.

We plan our adventures for Namibia’s best seasons, when wildlife viewing is at its peak. The “dry” season (April-September) is the most popular time of year, when daytime temperatures are in the mid-70sºF and wildlife viewing is at its peak as waterholes attract a vast array of animals. We also highly recommend the “green” season (January-March) when the crowds are gone and sporadic rains bring the desert to life to reveal carpets of flowers and calving season begins for plains game such as springbok and zebra.

Zimbabwe’s varied landscapes and world-class wildlife viewing offer seemingly endless opportunities for exploration—we’ve highlighted our favorite activities below!

Zimbabwe has a distinct “dry season” (May-early-November) and “green season” (late-November-April). Both offer fantastic wildlife viewing possibilities, making it a great destination to visit all year round. Each season in Zimbabwe has something unique to offer, with a diverse range of wildlife and a small fraction of the crowds other countries in Africa receive. See below for a full explanation of Zimbabwe’s different seasons to decide when is best for you.

History, mission and vision

One of the top tourism, accommodation, and safari businesses in Tanzania and Zanzibar is the Dutch family-owned Paradise and Wilderness.

Bert and his wife Ana visited Tanzania and Zanzibar for a vacation a number of years ago, and they fell in love with both places right away. They understood that the legendary National Parks in Tanzania with their gorgeous surroundings and wildlife and Zanzibar Island's white sand beaches combined the best of both worlds and made for the ideal vacation. Knowing this, they made the decision to follow their ambition and began their entrepreneurial journey. The organization's mission is to have as many people as possible to appreciate Africa's beauty.

The organisation's vision is to help Tanzania's local population by helping to create work opportunities.

“Now, I am lucky enough to have five Beach Resorts, a Boutique Hotel and a private Island on Zanzibar a Safari Lodge in the Selous GR (Nyerere National Park) and several more Safari Lodges located near or in world’s most famous National Parks: Serengeti Ikoma, Serengeti Klein's Gate, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Natron, Lake Manyara, Kilimanjaro and Arusha.”

Russia Safaris

Russia is an incomparably vast and varied destination, offering unique wildlife experiences for the more adventurous traveller. Covering over ten per cent of the world’s land area and encompassing nine different time zones, Russia stretches from the Caucasus Mountains in the west to the Bering Strait in the east. Most of the population is concentrated in the populous western cities of Moscow and St Petersburg, with the majority of the Russian landscape characterized by extensive, untamed wilderness, rugged mountains and frigid tundra.

Our safaris focus on the Russian Far East, a particularly biodiverse area, with carnivores including the Eurasian lynx, Siberian tiger and Amur leopard prowling the Siberian forests on the hunt for red deer and wild boar, while Asian black bears can occasionally be spotted lounging in the trees above. Spawning salmon thrive in the volcanic ash enriched waterways of the Kamchatka Peninsula, attracting predators such as sea otters, sea eagles and Kamchatka brown bears. Further north lies the remote Wrangel Island, the little known polar bear capital of the world.

Join one of our small group expeditions to Kamchatka, traversing rugged volcanic terrain or exploring the coastlines by expedition ship, or join conservationist Alexander Batalov as he tracks tigers through the Siberian wilderness. Wild and untamed, a safari to Far East Russia is a safari to one of the world’s last remaining unexplored frontiers.

Why NWS for your Russia Safari?

We originally started back in 2005 as World Big Cat Safaris and World Bear Safaris. Our CEO and Founder, Will Bolsover, spent many years in Siberia and Kamchtaka, tracking elusive Siberian tigers and spending time with grizzly bears. across the world tracking and guiding primates. Since then, we have gained years of valuable experience designing itineraries that put you in the right place, at the right time for the ultimate Russian wildlife safaris. We are the only company to have put clients in front of the world’s largest big cat, the Siberian tiger.

Our safaris concentrate on the Russian Far East, and we were among the first to send travellers to this remote and seldom visited region. Working with conservationist Alexander Batalov, track rare Siberian tigers in the forests of Durminskoye Reserve, and contribute to vital research into the protection of the world’s largest big cat. Intrepid travellers can also journey to the Kamchatka Peninsula, a barely accessible ‘land of fire and ice’ renowned for its active volcanoes and freezing winters, and an untouched haven for wildlife such as the Kamchatkan brown bear.

How much does Russia cost?

Typically, expect to budget around £13000 per person for a 17-day safari in Russia. This will generally include airport transfers, food and accommodation on a luxurious cruise ship. For a shorter 12-day experience staying at three camps, expect to budget £9500 per person. Journeying through Russia’s landscapes, you will enjoy helicopter rides and marine exploration to Russia Bay to spot sea life and birds.

Siberian Tiger Camera Trap Safari

Embark on a safari with a difference and venture deep into the remote Durminskoye Reserve in Russia’s Far East, home to the endangered Siberian tiger. Alongside conservationist Alexander Batalov, you’ll track the big cats and set camera traps on a unique adventure that truly puts you on the front line of wildlife conservation.

Push the boundaries on this frontier small group journey to Kamchatka located in Russia’s Far East. The peninsula contains less than 200 miles of paved road in an area larger than Great Britain, which is just one indication of how truly wild and remote this region is.

Russia highlights.

Russia is an incomparably vast and varied destination, offering unique wildlife experiences for the more adventurous traveller. Just journeying to Kamchatka is an adventure in itself due to its location, terrain and limited transport links. Our small group specialist led photography trips are the best way to explore Kamchatka and capture images of the brown bears. Similarly our expedition ships allow for an adventurous exploration of Kamchatka's coastline.

You may wish to include the following in your Russia itinerary:

  • Siberian Tigers - Explore the last remaining habitat of wild Siberian tigers.
  • Kamchatka Peninsula - Discover the volcanoes and wildlife of the Kamchatka Peninsula, the 'land of fire and ice'.
  • Durminskoye Reserve - Join conservationist Alexander Batalov in the Durminskoye Reserve, setting and retrieving camera traps to collect important data on the region's tigers.
  • Frontier Travel - Venture through wild and untamed environments of Far East Russia, one of the world's last unexplored frontiers.
  • Watch Brown Bears - Observe beautiful brown bears in outstanding the outstanding scenery of Kamchatka

Where to stay?

Russia contains many excellent accommodations, from large modern hotels set in bustling cities to totally remote and rustic lodges that allow you to get into the heart of the Siberian wilderness. Although organised campsites are rare, outdoor camping is allowed, making for an incredible wilderness experience. Read more on where to stay.

When to go?

Despite Russia’s immense size, most of the country experiences just two distinct seasons – winter and summer – which ensures that timing your trip to Russia is relatively straightforward. To spot the brown bears of Kamchatka, the best time to visit is July when large numbers can be observed on the river catching salmon. For other wildlife safaris in Russia, the summer season, between June and August, is ideal to experience the variety of landscapes within the country. Read more about when to go to Russia.

Video shows giraffe at Texas drive-thru safari park lifting toddler into the air

A video has captured the moment a giraffe lifted a 2-year-old girl out of the back of a pickup truck while she was trying to feed the animal during a drive-thru safari in Texas.

Jason Toten told KWTX that his "heart stopped" and his "stomach dropped" during the incident involving his daughter Paisley at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, outside of Dallas, on June 1.

"We stopped to feed the giraffes and I turned around to look out the back window, and I saw the giraffe kind of digging around right there, and then it just grabbed her and I didn’t see her no more," he said to the station.

"Paisley was holding the bag [of food] and the giraffe went to go get the bag, not get her, but ended up getting her shirt too and picking her up," Toten added. "Soon as she went up her mom just yelled hey -- like ‘HEY!’ -- and the giraffe just kind of let go."

The child ultimately was unharmed.

Footage taken of the incident begins with a red truck approaching a giraffe on its passenger side.

"You want to feed the giraffe? Feed him," Paisley’s mother is heard saying.

She then holds her daughter’s arm out towards the giraffe – but the animal grabs the child’s shirt instead and begins lifting her into the air.

"My heart stopped, my stomach dropped… it scared me," Jason Toten told KWTX.

The Fossil Rim Wildlife Center describes itself as a nonprofit "specializing in captive breeding programs for indigenous and exotic endangered and threatened species."

"Most Fossil Rim animals are free-roaming and may approach the vehicle. Even animals that may seem docile to you can be dangerous," it says on its website.

"Effective June 6th, 2024, guests are no longer permitted to ride in the bed of pickup trucks," it adds.
