Baie de Somme et côte d'opale

Découvrez ces deux régions. La baie de Somme est le plus grand estuaire du nord de la France. C’est un espace exceptionnel considéré comme l’une des plus belles baies du monde. Quant à la côte d’Opale, il s’agit d’un paysage plein de contrastes ; une région qui vit de la mer et joue avec le vent.

L'itinéraire de votre programme

Jour 1 départ / marquenterre.

Départ de votre établissement scolaire en fonction de votre région d’origine. Le petit-déjeuner et le déjeuner seront à prévoir par les participants. Arrivée à  ST QUENTIN EN TOURMONT en fin de matinée.

L’après-midi vous visiterez avec un accompagnateur le Parc ornithologique du Marquenterre : située au cœur de la Réserve Nationale de la Baie de Somme, cette réserve constitue le refuge apprécié des oiseaux en migration ou en quête de nid (plus de 400 espèces différentes). Vous poursuivrez votre route vers l’auberge de jeunesse située dans la région de Boulogne-sur- Mer. Installation, dîner et nuit.

Jour 2 Boulogne-Sur-Mer / Pas-De-Calais

Le matin petit-déjeuner à l’auberge de jeunesse puis départ avec un panier repas pour le déjeuner. Vous vous rendrez à BOULOGNE SUR MER pour visiter Nausicaa « Centre National de la Mer » : à travers des sites grandioses, vous aurez un aperçu de la vie marine et de l’impact de l’activité.

L’après-midi sera entièrement consacrée à la découverte des Espaces Naturels du Pas-de-Calais . Accompagnés d’un guide animateur vous visiterez le Cap Gris Nez ou le Cap Blanc Nez, Les Dunes d’Ecault, la Pointe de la Crèche… En fin de journée retour vers votre auberge de jeunesse, dîner et nuit.

Jour 3 La Baie de Somme / Retour

Le matin petit-déjeuner à l’auberge de jeunesse puis départ avec un panier repas pour le déjeuner. Nous vous conseillons une traversée guidée de la Baie de Somme . Vous découvrirez une des plus belles baies du monde (durée 2h00/2h30 en fonction des marées).

L’après-midi vous continuerez vers LANCHÈRES pour une visite de la Maison de la Baie de Somme et de l’Oiseau . Immersion totale au cœur d’un territoire en mouvement. Découvrez la Baie, ses milieux, son histoire et son devenir. Départ dans l’après-midi. Arrêt dîner libre à votre charge. Retour devant votre établissement scolaire en fonction de votre région d’origine.

Dès 1570, Strasbourg déploie son marché de Noël autour de sa prestigieuse cathédrale. Depuis lors, son rayonnement en Europe n’a fait que croître, grâce notamment aux traditions qu’il véhicule, son esprit de tolérance et d’humanité. Le Pas de Calais et la Seconde Guerre Mondiale

De juin 1940 à septembre 1944, le Nord et le Pas-de-Calais forment une zone d’occupation aux caractères spécifiques, au sein d’une France démembrée par les clauses de l’Armistice et d’une Europe placée sous le joug nazi.

Lille et le Bassin minier

Le Bassin minier a été reconnu par l’UNESCO comme un site du Patrimoine mondial, en raison de sa Valeur Universelle Exceptionnelle (VUE).

Paris clin d’oeil

Optez pour un voyage scolaire à Paris et faites découvrir à vos élèves l’île de la Cité, le berceau historique de Paris. S’y côtoient depuis l’Antiquité le pouvoir temporel, celui des rois puis des institutions républicaines et de la justice et le pouvoir religieux, matérialisé par sa Cathédrale majestueuse. Mais aucun autre quartier de la capitale n’a été aussi profondément transformé par Napoléon III et son fidèle Haussmann. Les sites de mémoire en Normandie

Le 6 Juin 1944, les plages du Calvados sont entrées dans l’histoire mondiale avec le célèbre débarquement maritime des forces alliées venues libérer, au prix de nombreuses pertes humaines, l’Europe pour le retour de la paix. Les plages du Débarquement que sont Omaha Beach, Gold Beach, Juno Beach et Sword Beach, jalonnées de monuments commémoratifs, Arromanches-les-Bains et les vestiges de son port artificiel, les cimetières militaires ou encore la pointe du Hoc sont des lieux de mémoire rappelant l’ampleur des opérations militaires du Débarquement.

De Saint-Malo à la baie du Mont Saint-Michel

Saint-Malo, qui fut presque entièrement détruite en août 1944 a été si bien restaurée que ses visiteurs retrouvent sans mal l’époque des corsaires derrière ses remparts de granit fortifiés. La baie du Mont Saint-Michel figure sur la liste du Patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO depuis 1979. Environ 100 kilomètres de côtes la bordent. Les îles, les falaises, les plages et les dunes forment une succession de zones riches d’une faune et d’une flore très variées.

Escales en Loire-Atlantique

Entre océan, fleuve, vignobles et marais salant, la Loire-Atlantique a de quoi étonner. Nantes, ouvrière et bourgeoise, nostalgique et aventureuse, où s’invente sans cesse la ville de demain ; Saint-Nazaire, industrieuse et festive, rivée à ses chantiers navals mais entourée de belles plages. Partez à la conquête de l’ouest de la région des Pays de La Loire.

La Rochelle et l’Ile de Ré

Partez à la découverte de la Rochelle, cette ville fortifiée est tournée à présent vers le grand large. Profitez d’un moment nature avec une balade à vélo sur l’Île de Ré.

Les grandes guerres

Longtemps provinces partagées entre influences rivales, aux frontières avec l’Allemagne, la Suisse, la Belgique et le Luxembourg, la Lorraine et l’Alsace ont toujours été de grands axes d’échanges d’idées, de marchandises, parfois au cœur des plus terribles conflits. En effet, trois terribles guerres entre la France et l’Allemagne ont placé cette région au centre de la tourmente.

Lorraine / Alsace un destin commun

Leur destin commun au tournant du XXe siècle, a rendu ces deux régions indissociables aux yeux d’un grand nombre de Français. Si l’Alsace a toujours cherché à préserver ses particularismes et ses symboles, les Lorrains montrent depuis quelques années un intérêt grandissant pour leur patrimoine.

La bourgogne médiévale

Région verte centrée autour du magnifique parc régional du Morvan, la Bourgogne est une terre nature qui offre un patrimoine d’une qualité exceptionnelle.

Lyon ville de lumière

Lyon, ville traditionnelle et dynamique, attire de plus en plus de visiteurs. Elle détient un patrimoine culturel fantastique, dont son centre ville classé au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO et sa place Bellecour parmi les plus grandes d’Europe. Lyon est également connu pour sa cité médiévale, le « Vieux Lyon », pour sa basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière et son quartier de la Croix Rousse, ancien lieu de commerce de la soie qui a fait la réputation de la ville.

Châteaux de la Loire et Futuroscope

Débutez votre séjour à la découverte de l’impressionnant patrimoine que compte le Val de Loire avec ses 19 châteaux. Ils ont la particularité d’avoir été, pour la plupart, bâtis ou fortement remaniés à la Renaissance française, à une époque où la cour des rois de France était installée dans cette région. Puis poursuivez votre périple au parc du Futuroscope où spectacles, rêves et émotions fortes vous attendent.

Châteaux de la Loire et Puy du Fou

Les rois ne s’étaient pas trompés en choisissant cette région pour sa forte personnalité ; en effet, de Charles VII à Henri III, neuf d’entre eux y ont établi leur cour. À cheval sur les départements du Puy-de-Dôme et du Cantal, le plus vaste parc naturel régional de France forme une mosaïque de paysages. Le parc régional des volcans d’Auvergne est un patrimoine naturel et humain d’exception à découvrir, à respecter et à préserver.

Toulouse la ville rose et la cité de l’espace

J5 Château d’Eaucourt

• Journée découverte du Moyen-Âge avec un apprentissage par le geste. Les élèves participent à 4 ateliers pédagogiques et participatifs (bâtisseur, forgeron, bourrelier et arbalétrier).

Déroulement

Partez à la découverte des richesses de la Baie de Somme grâce à ce programme qui allie nature et activités sportives.

Visite guidée de la Maison de la Baie de Somme et de l'Oiseau pour tout savoir sur la faune et la flore de la baie. L'après-midi, randonnée nature avec un animateur sur le thème de votre choix.

Découverte guidée du parc ornithologique du Marquenterre , l'univers passionnant des oiseaux migrateurs, au coeur de 3000 hectares que compte la réserve naturelle de la Baie de Somme. Visite suivie d'un atelier pédagogique. L'après-midi, initiation au char à voile sur la plage de Fort-Mahon.

Journée au parc de Samara, véritable vitrine vivante des richesses du patrimoine archéologique de la Somme. Grâce aux ateliers pédagogiques, la prehistoire n'aura plus de secret pour vos élèves : art pariétal, parures, silex, feu...Retour à votre établissement en soirée.

Le prix comprend un autocar standard jusqu'à 53 fauteuils incluant les frais de péage, de parking et de chauffeur(s).

D'autres capacités existent (55, 57, 59, 61 fauteuils et double-étage). Sur demande.

Hébergement

L'hébergement de ce programme est en auberge de jeunesse, en chambres multiples de 4 à 8 lits pour les élèves et 2 à 3 lits pour les enseignants. Les sanitaires sont dans les chambres ou sur les étages.

Capitale : Paris A savoir : pour les séjours en haute-saison (de mars à juin), pensez à nous contacter dès le début de l'année scolaire pour réserver votre séjour. Les hébergements et les grands sites touristiques voient leurs plannings se remplir très rapidement. Certaines visites doivent être réservées très longtemps à l'avance : Mémorial de Caen, le Louvre, la montée à la Tour Eiffel par un ascenseur, le musée d'Orsay, les visites de Verdun, le Conseil de l'Europe et le Parlement Européen de Strasbourg, le parc Vulcania... Les ateliers pédagogiques sont très prisés par les groupes scolaires, il est donc nécessaire de les réserver plusieurs mois à l'avance.

Fort d’une longue expérience dans l’animation et d’une passion dévorante pour la baie de Somme, je propose des sorties scolaires en baie de Somme et des activités pédagogiques adaptées à l’âge des enfants et aux projets des enseignants. Elles permettent une première approche des milieux marins et de la biodiversité.

Les sorties scolaires en baie de Somme se passent dans un esprit ludique et incitent à la réflexion, au questionnement pour un séjour enrichissant. Je vise une participation active du groupe avec une phase de sensibilisation au respect des êtres vivants et de leur environnement.

Voici les différentes sorties que nous proposons :

Sortie découverte

La traversée de la baie, la sortie phoque, la sortie oiseaux, sortie des "p'tits chevaliers gambettes", la sortie découverte.

Animation permettant aux enfants et aux jeunes de découvrir le patrimoine naturel de la baie. Son histoire, la richesse de son écosystème, observation et identification des espèces seront au rendez-vous.

•  Le Crotoy ou Saint Valéry

Sensations garanties avec la traversée de courants d’eau et de vase, rencontre avec les sables mouvants. Différents thèmes seront abordés :

• Le vivant (faune et flore)

La sortie phoques

Découverte et observation de la plus grande colonie française de phoques veau marin, ainsi que quelques phoques gris.

Observation à la longue-vue, aux jumelles ou selon la curiosité des phoques : à quelques mètres. Découverte et explication de leur vie et de leur milieu.

Sortie Oiseaux

Sur le lieu de la sortie : les élèves auront une liste d’espèce à observer, à cocher et à valider auprès de moi. Cela permettra une meilleure recherche de leur part et un échange plus important.

Une animation sur le chant d’oiseaux est prévue. (concours de sifflement) afin de les faire venir à quelques mètres pendant la sortie

À noter qu’il est possible de rejoindre le lieu de la sortie (Boismont, Noyelles) à vélo par le chemin de halage depuis Abbeville.

Attention ! 

En cas de mauvais temps (tempête, pluie, orages …) : les sorties pourront être annulées.  Il en va de la sécurité de chacun. Vous serez alors prévenus et bien sûr remboursés. Le calendrier des sorties est fait en fonction des horaires de marées, il est donc très rare que deux sorties soient programmées dans la même journée.

Cycles 2, 3 et collège     durée : 2h       5 kms       départ du Crotoy ou de Saint Valéry

Animation permettant aux enfants et aux jeunes de découvrir le patrimoine naturel de la baie. Son histoire, la richesse de son écosystème, observation et identification des espèces seront au rendez-vous.

Cycle 3 , Collège et lycée      durée : 2h30       7 kms     départ du Crotoy  arrivée à Saint Valéry

est une exploration de l’estuaire lors d’un parcours d’environ 3km, agrémenté d’activités adaptées aux enfants et en lien avec le programme scolaire.

 « Lu-koh baie de Somme »

est un parcours ludique, composé d’épreuves par équipes, idéal pour une découverte amusante de la baie de Somme. 

« Le loup et la sorcière »

est un jeu de piste qui invite les élèves à se repérer dans la cité médiévale de Saint-Valery et dans lequel ils doivent résoudre des énigmes. C’est u n jeu qui développe particulièrement l’esprit d’équipe. 

COLLÈGE/LYCÉ E

« La baie la marée les phoques ? » est un parcours de 4km à la rencontre de la marée qui permet de découvrir l’estuaire et éventuellement de voir des phoques (une longue-vue est mise à disposition). 

« La traversée de la baie de Somme » est un parcours de 7km à marée basse du Crotoy à Saint-Valery (ou l’inverse). Les élèves arpentent la partie haute de l’estuaire (prés salés) et sa partie basse (courants, vasières). 

« Lu-koh baie de Somme »

est un parcours ludique, composé d’épreuves par équipes, idéal pour une découverte amusante de la baie de Somme.

« Les reliques de Saint Valery   »

est une activité mêlant épreuves par équipes et énigmes à résoudre avec pour fil conducteur l’histoire médiévale de Saint-Valery-sur-Somme.  

Somme et Normandie

Somme et normandie, 6 jours / 4 nuits, voyages scolaires dans la somme et la normandie.

En 6 jours, un voyage de découvertes historiques autour des champs de bataille de la 1ère guerre mondiale dans la Somme et des plages du débarquement sur la côte normande. Lors de ce voyage vous verrez la tapisserie de Bayeux et visiterez les joyaux que sont la cathédrale d’Amiens, le Mont Saint-Michel, et la magnifique ville de Rouen.

Jour 1 – Paris-Amiens

Matin : Départ en train ou en autocar à l’Auberge de jeunesse. 

Après-midi : Visite de la cathédrale d’Amiens, construite au XIIIe siècle et classée au patrimoine mondial. C’est la plus grande cathédrale gothique de France (deux fois la taille de Notre-Dame de Paris). Sa façade est remarquable pour son travail de pierre à la fois riche et léger et par ses couleurs vives et originales découvertes  lors de travaux de rénovation.

Dîner et nuit à l’Auberge de jeunesse

Jour 2 - Les champs de bataille de la Somme

Jour 3 - Depuis Amiens, via Rouen jusqu’à la côte près de Caen

Matin : Départ en autocar pour Rouen, ancienne capitale de la Normandie, fondée par les Romains, transformée en duché pour les Normands (Vikings), et appartenant au royaume anglais jusqu’au XIIIe siècle. C’est le 3e port fluvial le plus important de France et la capitale de l’architecture gothique flamboyante. Ses rues bordées de maisons à colombages magnifiquement restaurées ont un grand charme. 

Après-midi :  Visite guidée de Rouen. 

Dîner et nuit à l’Auberge de jeunesse.

Jour 4 - Visite des plages du débarquement de Normandie, 6 juin 1944.

Matin et après-midi : Visite guidée d’une journée avec un guide spécialisé ; depuis les plages Utah et Omaha jusqu’aux plages Juno et Sword. Visite réservée au cinéma circulaire Arromanches 360° qui vous plongera au cœur du débarquement et de la bataille de Normandie.

Jour 5 - Mont St Michel et Bayeux

Matin : Visite du Mont Saint Michel, l’un des sites les plus célèbres du patrimoine mondial de France. Il fascine chaque visiteur tant par son cadre spectaculaire, par la beauté de son architecture que par les nombreuses légendes liées à sa création et à son site.

Après-midi : Visite de la tapisserie de Bayeux, tapisserie romane très célébrée et renommée  qui a été réalisée vers 1070 ;  brodée de laines multicolores, elle représente sur une longueur de plus de 68 mètres (50 cm de large) la conquête de l’Angleterre par Guillaume le Conquérant en 1066 . (La légende dit que c’est l’œuvre de Mathilde , la femme de William). 

Jour 6 - Caen et retour à Paris ou à l’aéroport Roissy-CDG

Matin : Visite de la ville très animée de Caen. C’était la capitale de Guillaume le Conquérant et les fortifications de son château sont encore très impressionnantes. Avec ses 2 abbayes et ses nombreuses églises, la ville attire beaucoup de monde. Le Mémorial de Caen (Ville de l’histoire pour la paix) y a été construit après la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Après-midi : retour en train vers Paris ou Roissy-CDG.

La baie de Somme, un territoire à explorer

La baie de Somme est un espace naturel du nord-ouest de la France. Elle s’étend sur plus de 72 kilomètres de long, en bordure de la Manche. Ce littoral sauvage est une invitation à la contemplation, à la détente et à la découverte.

Le domaine créé en 1986, accueille depuis plus de 30 ans des classes de découverte avec sa ferme équestre, où, le contact avec le poney et la nature se transforme en véritable outil pédagogique.

LE PONEY MAÎTRE D’ÉCOLE

La ferme équestre est un lieu de vie rythmé par les cycles biologiques des animaux et des saisons.

Afin de créer un esprit de classe, les enfants partent tous ensemble à la découverte de l’animal, apprennent à se responsabiliser, à s’entraider… De plus, chaque enfant apprend à développer ses capacités motrices. Il apprend à respecter les règles et se découvre un nouvel ami, le poney. Le site permet de découvrir un lieu en pleine nature avec le poney, c’est l’école de la vie dans sa réalité de tous les jours.

Et pour l’enseignant, le poney peut devenir un véritable outil pédagogique !

Il va pouvoir se servir du poney comme support dans les différentes matières pour créer une motivation supplémentaire chez les élèves (ex : apprendre les pays à la découverte des races, calculer les rations…, remonter le temps avec le cheval dans l’histoire, en français…)

LA NATURE COMME TABLEAU VERT

Dans le cadre exceptionnel du LieuDieu, nous vous présentons ici différents thèmes qu’il nous est possible de développer lors de votre séjour. Ces thèmes sont abordés à l’occasion de promenades et d’ateliers : Arboriculture, découverte de l’eau, de son petit peuple, de la vie qui l’entoure et son importance, Ornithologie, Orientation sur le site ou en forêt etc.

Ils permettront de sensibiliser les élèves des enjeux de la protection de la nature : qui connaît bien, protège bien. Ensemble, apprenons à regarder et respecter la nature.

En 2023, notre association Rando-Nature en Somme a répondu à l’appel à projets de l’ Agence de l’Eau Artois-Picardie   intitulé “Fenêtre sur l’eau : raconte-moi une zone humide” .

Ce projet se déroule en deux parties :

• Une journée sur le terrain avec une sortie nature et une rencontre avec un professionnel

• Une intervention en classe au cours de laquelle différentes activités et une restitution des élèves sont organisées. Cette intervention s’est conclue par une dégustation de produits de la baie de Somme

Découvrir la diversité et la richesse du monde vivant

Le but de ce projet était de montrer aux jeunes la diversité et la richesse du monde vivant ainsi que la nécessité de porter une attention particulière aux zones humides. De plus, ce projet vise à montrer que, au cœur de ces zones naturelles, ont lieu des activités humaines et que ces activités sont compatibles avec la préservation de l’environnement.

Quand le voyage scolaire tourne au « cauchemar » : un Boeing fait demi-tour en raison d’une fissure dans le cockpit

L’avion transportait des élèves de cm2 et de 6e qui, après deux changements d’avion, ont dû annuler leur voyage scolaire vers la Grèce.

Le voyage scolaire d’élèves de 6e et de cm2 en Grèce ne s’est pas passé comme prévu. Plusieurs enfants se sont rendus lundi matin à l’aéroport d’Orly à 6h30 pour prendre un avion à 9 heures, direction Athènes, dans le cadre d’un voyage scolaire en Grèce.

Le Boeing 737-800 de la compagnie Transavia décolle comme prévu, mais « au bout de deux heures on entend le pilote qui nous dit : il y a un problème technique, il faut qu’on revienne à Orly puisque c’est irréparable à Athènes », raconte à BFMTV Isaac, élève de 6e qui faisait partie du voyage.

« À 12h30 nous recevons un message de l’école indiquant que l’avion a été dérouté vers Orly pour un incident technique… », rapporte également sur LinkedIn Rebecca, qui se présente comme la mère d’un élève de 11 ans faisant partie du voyage. Elle apprendra plus tard que le demi-tour est dû à une fissure sur les vitres du cockpit, qui n’aurait pas été réparable dans la capitale grecque.

Un deuxième vol annulé

L’avion « s’est posé en toute sécurité à l’aéroport de Paris-Orly et un changement d’appareil a eu lieu », relate de son côté Transavia, contacté par Le Parisien. Les élèves sont en effet placés dans un autre avion, mais il ne décollera pas en raison d’un dommage au niveau du moteur.

Tout le monde se dirige alors dans un troisième engin, qui tarde à s’envoler. Les professeurs décident alors de faire descendre les classes et annulent le voyage. « Après une heure à attendre que leurs valises arrivent (ce qui ne sera finalement pas le cas avant 20 heures) chacun rentre chez soi, sans bagage, la déception dans les yeux, et pour beaucoup terrorisés à l’idée de remonter dans un avion », écrit Rebecca.

Transavia explique de son côté que le débarquement des bagages a pris du temps car il a fallu les identifier un à un, et que tout le monde a pu récupérer ses affaires dans la soirée.

« Certains ont fait des cauchemars »

Ces désagréments ont laissé des traces sur les élèves. « J’étais inquiet au bout d’un moment, confirme Isaac. Je me suis dit qu’on aurait pu risquer le crash, des amis à moi étaient vraiment terrifiés, certains ont fait des cauchemars ». Il souligne avoir eu des doutes sur la bonne tenue du vol après avoir compris qu’il montait dans un Boeing. Les avions de la compagnie ont régulièrement été pointés du doigt ces derniers mois pour différentes anomalies.

Rebecca pointe de son côté le manque de prise en charge des enfants, qui n’auraient eu qu’un rafraîchissement dans la journée et des bons de 5 euros pour manger. Et durant toute la journée, « pas une information de la part de la compagnie, au sol personne ne peut donner d’informations aux parents par téléphone, le cauchemar ».

Karim, le père d’Isaac, rapporte également l’angoisse vécue lundi : « T’es inquiet, t’as peur et tu découvres également le laxisme et la négligence de toute une organisation, dénonce-t-il auprès de BFMTV. Pour lui « ce n’est pas uniquement la responsabilité de la compagnie, c’est également la responsabilité de l’aéroport. »

De son côté, Transavia France a présenté « ses excuses aux passagers du vol TO3520 entre Paris Orly et Athènes, et plus particulièrement aux élèves en voyage scolaire ». La compagnie a promis de rembourser les vols allers-retours et d’indemniser les passagers à hauteur de 400 euros par personne.

When I get succeed anything, she is the happiest person in that time.  

How Much She Loves Me: There is no limitation or I can’t measure the love of her for me. I know she loves me most and I also love her really too much. Home is called ‘HOME’ because of her only. She is my best friend and guide. She teaches me how to survive in the world.

She is the one who never gets tired loving us more and more. Love of a mother is different, unique and it’s not possible to replace by any other person. We won’t find any love in the entire world that can be compared with the love of a mother.  

Mother as a Guide: She has a crucial role in my life as a guide. Whatever I do, she guides me on the right path. Sometimes, we make mistakes and they show us the right thing as guardian. She is the one who brings us on light and removes all darkness from life.

On every Sunday we go to the amusement park. My mother cares for poor people. If she sees any poor person, she gives them food. Last week, when we were coming out of the cake shop, a poor man was sitting outside. Mom got some cakes for him. She donates clothes, medicines, and blankets to the poor. She feeds strays in our neighbourhood. She also feeds birds on the terrace. She keeps a big bowl of water on the terrace for thirsty birds in summers.

My mother is very patient. She says that it’s very important to be honest, no matter what. She is the backbone of our family. She keeps the family closely knit together. She is also very courageous. I feel good when she motivates me, even though I don’t do so well in exams. She appreciates me when I do well and tells me that we should always give our best. I love my mother.

How Taiwan won the hearts of my American kids

“I don’t like Chinese,” announced my 8-year-old. (Ironically, in Chinese. That softened the blow.)

I knew this day would come, when my American-born, half-Taiwanese children would reject the language and culture I’d worked so hard to teach them. Time to visit the motherland and win them back.

How do you appeal to the hearts of  8- and 12-year-old boys? Unsanctioned time away from school, homework free. Frittering away money at night market games. The cross-cultural allure of amusement parks.

Over 16 fulfilling days, my boys and I explored Taipei, Hualien, Kaohsiung, Tainan and Chiayi, a full loop around the itty-bitty island nation where I was born. Taiwan is about the size of Maryland, and you can drive from tip to tip in 5.5 hours. I wanted my kids to see it all … while it’s still here.

The darkest part of my soul can’t help worrying about the unthinkable. Taiwan and China have been dancing around war since 1949. No one thought Russia would invade Ukraine for real either. The difference is, unlike Ukraine, only a dozen other teeny tiny nations officially recognize Taiwan’s sovereignty . And Taiwan is surrounded by water. There’s no place to flee.

With Ukraine heavy on my mind, I took my kids to experience everything in their country of heritage.

We spent most of our time in the capital city of Taipei, where I lived the first four years of my life. From the top of Taipei’s tallest skyscraper, you can see the metropolis hugging the folds of green mountains. From street level, the city is a warren of alleys crammed with scooters and burglar bars over every window. The mosquitoes are relentless.

On our island circuit, we dug our toes into the beaches of Kenting, hiked in the Taroko Gorge, caught the sunrise at Alishan with mugs of hot cocoa in hand.

No one believed these American kids could speak the language. They’d test, asking Mandarin: “When’s your birthday?” My boys laughed their heads off, and I savored a smug mom moment.

We operated mostly as stealth tourists, because we speak Mandarin and more or less look the part. Except for the waiter who looked my boys up and down and tilted his head. “Mixed blood?” Busted. Taiwanese people are friendly in that no-filter, New Yorker sort of way.

More clues to our outsider status: Wearing shorts and a T-shirt, when everyone else is bundled in puffy coats. (In 85 degree weather, I’m not kidding.) Walking around with giant bottles of ice water. Taiwanese people will drink tea, bubble tea, juice — anything but cold water. Or asking for a fork. Worst case scenario, I fed my much-too-old kids with chopsticks like baby birds.

Americans come in all colors and shapes; the Taiwanese are much more homogenous. The drugstore’s makeup aisle offers foundation in exactly three shades: light, lighter, lightest. Forget clothes shopping. My American women’s size medium translated into a Taiwanese 5XL.

Wrapped in security

Growing up, anytime someone asked the Where are you really from? question, I’d say, “I was born in Taiwan,” which is accurate. Half the time, I’d hear back, “Thailand?”

Or I’d say: “My grandparents are from China.” Also accurate. I didn’t feel right claiming Taiwanese nationality when I don’t speak the Taiwanese dialect.

In the hours before our red-eye to Taiwan, self-doubt and panic crept up like bile. The trip would be a whirlwind of meeting extended family who’d only ever seen my boys on Facebook posts.

“Headed to the airport in a bit. Full of misgivings now,” I texted a Taiwanese friend. “What did I get myself into? We haven’t even left yet and I can feel the weight of my relatives’ criticism on me.”

Her response: “Well, you wanted your kids to be exposed to the culture. Having judgmental and controlling elders stressing you out is part of Taiwanese culture.”

A big family means drama and feuds all around. The flip side is we were wrapped with security everywhere we went. In Taiwanese culture, everyone older than you is an auntie or uncle, everyone younger is a little sister or brother. Even if you’re not blood related. Even if you’re just an acquaintance. Or a passer-by on the MRT.

I even accepted unmarked meds from a stranger on the bus, with gratitude. A kind grandma (not biological grandma, just a random older lady) fished pills out of her purse for my car sick kid.

Taiwan is exceptionally safe 24/7: pre-dawn, late at night, in deserted side streets, in shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. A mom traveling alone with 2 kids? No problem. We never felt vulnerable, not for a second. Sorry Charles Sun, in real-life Taiwan, violent crime is virtually unheard of.

I wanted my boys to fall in love with their heritage, and nip that “I don’t like Chinese” mindset in the bud. I’m claiming victory.

Because after their first taste of Taiwan, the kids changed their tune. They said to me (in Mandarin): "Taiwan is so, so fun!  When are we going back?”

When Prison and Mental Illness Amount to a Death Sentence

The downward spiral of one inmate, Markus Johnson, shows the larger failures of the nation’s prisons to care for the mentally ill.

Markus Johnson slumped naked against the wall of his cell, skin flecked with pepper spray, his face a mask of puzzlement, exhaustion and resignation. Four men in black tactical gear pinned him, his face to the concrete, to cuff his hands behind his back.

He did not resist. He couldn’t. He was so gravely dehydrated he would be dead by their next shift change.

“I didn’t do anything,” Mr. Johnson moaned as they pressed a shield between his shoulders.

It was 1:19 p.m. on Sept. 6, 2019, in the Danville Correctional Center, a medium-security prison a few hours south of Chicago. Mr. Johnson, 21 and serving a short sentence for gun possession, was in the throes of a mental collapse that had gone largely untreated, but hardly unwatched.

He had entered in good health, with hopes of using the time to gain work skills. But for the previous three weeks, Mr. Johnson, who suffered from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, had refused to eat or take his medication. Most dangerous of all, he had stealthily stopped drinking water, hastening the physical collapse that often accompanies full-scale mental crises.

Mr. Johnson’s horrific downward spiral, which has not been previously reported, represents the larger failures of the nation’s prisons to care for the mentally ill. Many seriously ill people receive no treatment . For those who do, the outcome is often determined by the vigilance and commitment of individual supervisors and frontline staff, which vary greatly from system to system, prison to prison, and even shift to shift.

The country’s jails and prisons have become its largest provider of inpatient mental health treatment, with 10 times as many seriously mentally ill people now held behind bars as in hospitals. Estimating the population of incarcerated people with major psychological problems is difficult, but the number is likely 200,000 to 300,000, experts say.

Many of these institutions remain ill-equipped to handle such a task, and the burden often falls on prison staff and health care personnel who struggle with the dual roles of jailer and caregiver in a high-stress, dangerous, often dehumanizing environment.

In 2021, Joshua McLemore , a 29-year-old with schizophrenia held for weeks in an isolation cell in Jackson County, Ind., died of organ failure resulting from a “refusal to eat or drink,” according to an autopsy. In April, New York City agreed to pay $28 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of Nicholas Feliciano, a young man with a history of mental illness who suffered severe brain damage after attempting to hang himself on Rikers Island — as correctional officers stood by.

Mr. Johnson’s mother has filed a wrongful-death suit against the state and Wexford Health Sources, a for-profit health care contractor in Illinois prisons. The New York Times reviewed more than 1,500 pages of reports, along with depositions taken from those involved. Together, they reveal a cascade of missteps, missed opportunities, potential breaches of protocol and, at times, lapses in common sense.

Prison officials and Wexford staff took few steps to intervene even after it became clear that Mr. Johnson, who had been hospitalized repeatedly for similar episodes and recovered, had refused to take medication. Most notably, they did not transfer him to a state prison facility that provides more intensive mental health treatment than is available at regular prisons, records show.

The quality of medical care was also questionable, said Mr. Johnson’s lawyers, Sarah Grady and Howard Kaplan, a married legal team in Chicago. Mr. Johnson lost 50 to 60 pounds during three weeks in solitary confinement, but officials did not initiate interventions like intravenous feedings or transfer him to a non-prison hospital.

And they did not take the most basic step — dialing 911 — until it was too late.

There have been many attempts to improve the quality of mental health treatment in jails and prisons by putting care on par with punishment — including a major effort in Chicago . But improvements have proved difficult to enact and harder to sustain, hampered by funding and staffing shortages.

Lawyers representing the state corrections department, Wexford and staff members who worked at Danville declined to comment on Mr. Johnson’s death, citing the unresolved litigation. In their interviews with state police investigators, and in depositions, employees defended their professionalism and adherence to procedure, while citing problems with high staff turnover, difficult work conditions, limited resources and shortcomings of co-workers.

But some expressed a sense of resignation about the fate of Mr. Johnson and others like him.

Prisoners have “much better chances in a hospital, but that’s not their situation,” said a senior member of Wexford’s health care team in a deposition.

“I didn’t put them in prison,” he added. “They are in there for a reason.”

Markus Mison Johnson was born on March 1, 1998, to a mother who believed she was not capable of caring for him.

Days after his birth, he was taken in by Lisa Barker Johnson, a foster mother in her 30s who lived in Zion, Ill., a working-class city halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee. Markus eventually became one of four children she adopted from different families.

The Johnson house is a lively split level, with nieces, nephews, grandchildren and neighbors’ children, family keepsakes, video screens and juice boxes. Ms. Johnson sits at its center on a kitchen chair, chin resting on her hand as children wander over to share their thoughts, or to tug on her T-shirt to ask her to be their bathroom buddy.

From the start, her bond with Markus was particularly powerful, in part because the two looked so much alike, with distinctive dimpled smiles. Many neighbors assumed he was her biological son. The middle name she chose for him was intended to convey that message.

“Mison is short for ‘my son,’” she said standing over his modest footstone grave last summer.

He was happy at home. School was different. His grades were good, but he was intensely shy and was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in elementary school.

That was around the time the bullying began. His sisters were fierce defenders, but they could only do so much. He did the best he could, developing a quick, taunting tongue.

These experiences filled him with a powerful yearning to fit in.

It was not to be.

When he was around 15, he called 911 in a panic, telling the dispatcher he saw two men standing near the small park next to his house threatening to abduct children playing there. The officers who responded found nothing out of the ordinary, and rang the Johnsons’ doorbell.

He later told his mother he had heard a voice telling him to “protect the kids.”

He was hospitalized for the first time at 16, and given medications that stabilized him for stretches of time. But the crises would strike every six months or so, often triggered by his decision to stop taking his medication.

His family became adept at reading signs he was “getting sick.” He would put on his tan Timberlands and a heavy winter coat, no matter the season, and perch on the edge of his bed as if bracing for battle. Sometimes, he would cook his own food, paranoid that someone might poison him.

He graduated six months early, on the dean’s list, but was rudderless, and hanging out with younger boys, often paying their way.

His mother pointed out the perils of buying friendship.

“I don’t care,” he said. “At least I’ll be popular for a minute.”

Zion’s inviting green grid of Bible-named streets belies the reality that it is a rough, unforgiving place to grow up. Family members say Markus wanted desperately to prove he was tough, and emulated his younger, reckless group of friends.

Like many of them, he obtained a pistol. He used it to hold up a convenience store clerk for $425 in January 2017, according to police records. He cut a plea deal for two years of probation, and never explained to his family what had made him do it.

But he kept getting into violent confrontations. In late July 2018, he was arrested in a neighbor’s garage with a handgun he later admitted was his. He was still on probation for the robbery, and his public defender negotiated a plea deal that would send him to state prison until January 2020.

An inpatient mental health system

Around 40 percent of the about 1.8 million people in local, state and federal jails and prison suffer from at least one mental illness, and many of these people have concurrent issues with substance abuse, according to recent Justice Department estimates.

Psychological problems, often exacerbated by drug use, often lead to significant medical problems resulting from a lack of hygiene or access to good health care.

“When you suffer depression in the outside world, it’s hard to concentrate, you have reduced energy, your sleep is disrupted, you have a very gloomy outlook, so you stop taking care of yourself,” said Robert L. Trestman , a Virginia Tech medical school professor who has worked on state prison mental health reforms.

The paradox is that prison is often the only place where sick people have access to even minimal care.

But the harsh work environment, remote location of many prisons, and low pay have led to severe shortages of corrections staff and the unwillingness of doctors, nurses and counselors to work with the incarcerated mentally ill.

In the early 2000s, prisoners’ rights lawyers filed a class-action lawsuit against Illinois claiming “deliberate indifference” to the plight of about 5,000 mentally ill prisoners locked in segregated units and denied treatment and medication.

In 2014, the parties reached a settlement that included minimum staffing mandates, revamped screening protocols, restrictions on the use of solitary confinement and the allocation of about $100 million to double capacity in the system’s specialized mental health units.

Yet within six months of the deal, Pablo Stewart, an independent monitor chosen to oversee its enforcement, declared the system to be in a state of emergency.

Over the years, some significant improvements have been made. But Dr. Stewart’s final report , drafted in 2022, gave the system failing marks for its medication and staffing policies and reliance on solitary confinement “crisis watch” cells.

Ms. Grady, one of Mr. Johnson’s lawyers, cited an additional problem: a lack of coordination between corrections staff and Wexford’s professionals, beyond dutifully filling out dozens of mandated status reports.

“Markus Johnson was basically documented to death,” she said.

‘I’m just trying to keep my head up’

Mr. Johnson was not exactly looking forward to prison. But he saw it as an opportunity to learn a trade so he could start a family when he got out.

On Dec. 18, 2018, he arrived at a processing center in Joliet, where he sat for an intake interview. He was coherent and cooperative, well-groomed and maintained eye contact. He was taking his medication, not suicidal and had a hearty appetite. He was listed as 5 feet 6 inches tall and 256 pounds.

Mr. Johnson described his mood as “go with the flow.”

A few days later, after arriving in Danville, he offered a less settled assessment during a telehealth visit with a Wexford psychiatrist, Dr. Nitin Thapar. Mr. Johnson admitted to being plagued by feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness and “constant uncontrollable worrying” that affected his sleep.

He told Dr. Thapar he had heard voices in the past — but not now — telling him he was a failure, and warning that people were out to get him.

At the time he was incarcerated, the basic options for mentally ill people in Illinois prisons included placement in the general population or transfer to a special residential treatment program at the Dixon Correctional Center, west of Chicago. Mr. Johnson seemed out of immediate danger, so he was assigned to a standard two-man cell in the prison’s general population, with regular mental health counseling and medication.

Things started off well enough. “I’m just trying to keep my head up,” he wrote to his mother. “Every day I learn to be stronger & stronger.”

But his daily phone calls back home hinted at friction with other inmates. And there was not much for him to do after being turned down for a janitorial training program.

Then, in the spring of 2019, his grandmother died, sending him into a deep hole.

Dr. Thapar prescribed a new drug used to treat major depressive disorders. Its most common side effect is weight gain. Mr. Johnson stopped taking it.

On July 4, he told Dr. Thapar matter-of-factly during a telehealth check-in that he was no longer taking any of his medications. “I’ve been feeling normal, I guess,” he said. “I feel like I don’t need the medication anymore.”

Dr. Thapar said he thought that was a mistake, but accepted the decision and removed Mr. Johnson from his regular mental health caseload — instructing him to “reach out” if he needed help, records show.

The pace of calls back home slackened. Mr. Johnson spent more time in bed, and became more surly. At a group-therapy session, he sat stone silent, after showing up late.

By early August, he was telling guards he had stopped eating.

At some point, no one knows when, he had intermittently stopped drinking fluids.

‘I’m having a breakdown’

Then came the crash.

On Aug. 12, Mr. Johnson got into a fight with his older cellmate.

He was taken to a one-man disciplinary cell. A few hours later, Wexford’s on-site mental health counselor, Melanie Easton, was shocked by his disoriented condition. Mr. Johnson stared blankly, then burst into tears when asked if he had “suffered a loss in the previous six months.”

He was so unresponsive to her questions she could not finish the evaluation.

Ms. Easton ordered that he be moved to a 9-foot by 8-foot crisis cell — solitary confinement with enhanced monitoring. At this moment, a supervisor could have ticked the box for “residential treatment” on a form to transfer him to Dixon. That did not happen, according to records and depositions.

Around this time, he asked to be placed back on his medication but nothing seems to have come of it, records show.

By mid-August, he said he was visualizing “people that were not there,” according to case notes. At first, he was acting more aggressively, once flicking water at a guard through a hole in his cell door. But his energy ebbed, and he gradually migrated downward — from standing to bunk to floor.

“I’m having a breakdown,” he confided to a Wexford employee.

At the time, inmates in Illinois were required to declare an official hunger strike before prison officials would initiate protocols, including blood testing or forced feedings. But when a guard asked Mr. Johnson why he would not eat, he said he was “fasting,” as opposed to starving himself, and no action seems to have been taken.

‘Tell me this is OK!’

Lt. Matthew Morrison, one of the few people at Danville to take a personal interest in Mr. Johnson, reported seeing a white rind around his mouth in early September. He told other staff members the cell gave off “a death smell,” according to a deposition.

On Sept. 5, they moved Mr. Johnson to one of six cells adjacent to the prison’s small, bare-bones infirmary. Prison officials finally placed him on the official hunger strike protocol without his consent.

Mr. Morrison, in his deposition, said he was troubled by the inaction of the Wexford staff, and the lack of urgency exhibited by the medical director, Dr. Justin Young.

On Sept. 5, Mr. Morrison approached Dr. Young to express his concerns, and the doctor agreed to order blood and urine tests. But Dr. Young lived in Chicago, and was on site at the prison about four times a week, according to Mr. Kaplan. Friday, Sept. 6, 2019, was not one of those days.

Mr. Morrison arrived at work that morning, expecting to find Mr. Johnson’s testing underway. A Wexford nurse told him Dr. Young believed the tests could wait.

Mr. Morrison, stunned, asked her to call Dr. Young.

“He’s good till Monday,” Dr. Young responded, according to Mr. Morrison.

“Come on, come on, look at this guy! You tell me this is OK!” the officer responded.

Eventually, Justin Duprey, a licensed nurse practitioner and the most senior Wexford employee on duty that day, authorized the test himself.

Mr. Morrison, thinking he had averted a disaster, entered the cell and implored Mr. Johnson into taking the tests. He refused.

So prison officials obtained approval to remove him forcibly from his cell.

‘Oh, my God’

What happened next is documented in video taken from cameras held by officers on the extraction team and obtained by The Times through a court order.

Mr. Johnson is scarcely recognizable as the neatly groomed 21-year-old captured in a cellphone picture a few months earlier. His skin is ashen, eyes fixed on the middle distance. He might be 40. Or 60.

At first, he places his hands forward through the hole in his cell door to be cuffed. This is against procedure, the officers shout. His hands must be in back.

He will not, or cannot, comply. He wanders to the rear of his cell and falls hard. Two blasts of pepper spray barely elicit a reaction. The leader of the tactical team later said he found it unusual and unnerving.

The next video is in the medical unit. A shield is pressed to his chest. He is in agony, begging for them to stop, as two nurses attempt to insert a catheter.

Then they move him, half-conscious and limp, onto a wheelchair for the blood draw.

For the next 20 minutes, the Wexford nurse performing the procedure, Angelica Wachtor, jabs hands and arms to find a vessel that will hold shape. She winces with each puncture, tries to comfort him, and grows increasingly rattled.

“Oh, my God,” she mutters, and asks why help is not on the way.

She did not request assistance or discuss calling 911, records indicate.

“Can you please stop — it’s burning real bad,” Mr. Johnson said.

Soon after, a member of the tactical team reminds Ms. Wachtor to take Mr. Johnson’s vitals before taking him back to his cell. She would later tell Dr. Young she had been unable to able to obtain his blood pressure.

“You good?” one of the team members asks as they are preparing to leave.

“Yeah, I’ll have to be,” she replies in the recording.

Officers lifted him back onto his bunk, leaving him unconscious and naked except for a covering draped over his groin. His expressionless face is visible through the window on the cell door as it closes.

‘Cardiac arrest.’

Mr. Duprey, the nurse practitioner, had been sitting inside his office after corrections staff ordered him to shelter for his own protection, he said. When he emerged, he found Ms. Wachtor sobbing, and after a delay, he was let into the cell. Finding no pulse, Mr. Duprey asked a prison employee to call 911 so Mr. Johnson could be taken to a local emergency room.

The Wexford staff initiated CPR. It did not work.

At 3:38 p.m., the paramedics declared Markus Mison Johnson dead.

Afterward, a senior official at Danville called the Johnson family to say he had died of “cardiac arrest.”

Lisa Johnson pressed for more information, but none was initially forthcoming. She would soon receive a box hastily crammed with his possessions: uneaten snacks, notebooks, an inspirational memoir by a man who had served 20 years at Leavenworth.

Later, Shiping Bao, the coroner who examined his body, determined Mr. Johnson had died of severe dehydration. He told the state police it “was one of the driest bodies he had ever seen.”

For a long time, Ms. Johnson blamed herself. She says that her biggest mistake was assuming that the state, with all its resources, would provide a level of care comparable to what she had been able to provide her son.

She had stopped accepting foster care children while she was raising Markus and his siblings. But as the months dragged on, she decided her once-boisterous house had become oppressively still, and let local agencies know she was available again.

“It is good to have children around,” she said. “It was too quiet around here.”
