"Right from the start, the very first notes sound almost like a pickaxe going against rock and then against that the singing has a certain quality that I think has that same simplicity of affect," composer John Adams says of his 2017 opera, Girls of the Golden West , in a new Boosey & Hawkes video marking the work's recently released first recording. "All of that comes together in this opera in a way that I think only opera can actually address, because it addresses you on an intellectual level, but it also fundamentally touches you on an emotional level." The Black Keys

The Black Keys have quietly canceled their upcoming International Players Tour, which was scheduled to bring them to arenas throughout North America.

The tour, announced in early April, was scheduled to kick off in September, with dates set for New York City’s Madison Square Garden and Los Angeles’ Kia Forum. The 31-date trek would have brought them across North America, with stops planned in Seattle, Boston and Milwaukee before concluding at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena on Nov. 12. All dates have been marked as canceled on Ticketmaster’s website.

Management and publicity for the Black Keys did not respond to Variety ‘s requests for comment.

After news broke on Saturday that the tour had been canceled, the group posted on Instagram explaining that they had to reconfigure their tour to bring a similarly “exciting, intimate experience” for fans and that tickets for the original trek would be refunded in full.

“The band wants to assure everyone that Dan & Patrick are alive and well,” reads the caption. “Following the recent run of shows in the UK & Europe, including stops at iconic venues like Brixton Academy and the Zenith in Paris, we have decided to make some changes to the North American leg of the International Players Tour that will enable us to offer a similarly exciting, intimate experience for both fans and the band, and will be announcing a revised set of dates shortly. Everyone who had purchased tickets and/or VIP to the initial tour dates will be fully refunded – and when the new plans are announced, will be the first to be able to buy tickets. Thank you for your understanding and apologies for the surprise change… We’re pretty sure everyone is going to be excited when you see what we have in mind though, and look forward to seeing everyone soon.”

The Black Keys, which consists of Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach, were set to kick off the tour in support of their most recent album “Ohio Players,” which released in April. On Wednesday, the pair appeared on NBC’s “The Voice,” where they performed “Beautiful People (Stay High).”

The band also recently debuted the documentary “This Is a Film About the Black Keys,” which had its world premiere at SXSW last month. The film explored the historical tensions between the bandmates as well as what united them. “We’ve figured each other out, for the most part,” said Auerbach in the doc. “We’re just two very opinionated, hard-headed people, trapped for eternity together.”

The Black Keys have abruptly canceled their upcoming North American tour.

The 31-date arena trek - which was scheduled to launch Sept. 17 in Tulsa, Okla., and wrap Nov. 12 in Detroit - quietly disappeared from Ticketmaster's website without explanation on Friday (May 24).

The upcoming jaunt, dubbed the International Players Tour, was in support of the rock duo's 12th studio album, Ohio Players , which debuted and peaked at No. 26 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in April.

A handful of venues that were scheduled to host the Black Keys - including Austin's Moody Center (Sept. 18) and New York's Madison Square Garden ( Oct. 30 ) - acknowledged the nixed dates on their websites and noted that ticket-buyers would be refunded.

"Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel this event," the Moody Center's date noted . "Ticket holders, please check your email from Ticketmaster for more info."

The Black Keys have also removed the upcoming North American tour dates from their website , except for a lone appearance at Chicago's NASCAR Street Race on July 6.

Billboard has reached out to the Black Keys' representatives for comment.

The cancellation arrives on the heels of Black Keys' appeared on NBC's The Voice , where members Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney performed their song "Beautiful People (Stay High)." The pair also recently completed the European leg of their tour in mid-May.

The Black Keys launched three singles in the lead-up to the full release of Ohio Players on April 5. Lead single "Beautiful People (Stay High)," which features writing contributions from Grammy-winner Beck, became their seventh chart-topper on Alternative Airplay, spending two weeks atop the ranking.

The Black Keys Issue Statement on Tour Cancellation

The Black Keys Issue Statement on Tour Cancellation

The Black Keys have issued an official statement concerning the cancellation of their upcoming tour. The group were slated to headline arenas in September and October in support of their new LP, Ohio Players . The run was abruptly cancelled a few days ago and the dates were removed from the duo’s site.

However, The Black Keys have now issued the following statement:

The band wants to assure everyone that Dan and Patrick are alive and well. Following the recent run of shows in the UK and Europe, including stops at iconic venues like Brixton Academy and the Zenith in Paris, we have decided to make some changes to the North American leg of the ‘International Players’ Tour that will enable us to offer a similarly exciting, intimate experience for both fans and the band, and will be announcing a revised set of dates shortly.

Everyone who had purchased tickets and/or VIP to the initial tour dates will be fully refunded – and when the new plans are announced, will be the first to be able to buy tickets.

Thank you for your understanding and apologies for the surprise change… We’re pretty sure everyone is going to be excited when you see what we have in mind though, and look forward to seeing everyone soon.

The Black Keys’ only currently scheduled date in a July 6 appearance at Chicago’s NASCAR Chicago Street Race.
