Paul helped us plan our honeymoon, and was incredible to work with from beginning to end! From picking a destination, resorts, flights, you name it he gave us plenty of options and always the best deal. It didn't stop there, he was in communication with my husband during our travel and stay to make sure everything went as smooth as possible. Unfortunately, there was a hurricane during our stay, but luckily the resort and Paul were there to handle everything seamlessly! We couldn't have dreamed of a better honeymoon, all thanks to Paul!

Thanks so much for your 5* review of my honeymoon planning services. Unfortunately Mother Nature didn't cooperate during a few days of your trip. I always take weather into consideration when I make a recommendation, and historically Cabo has been a safe bet in October. I happy to hear how much your enjoyed your honeymoon. I hope I'll have the opportunity to plan many future vacations. Thanks again!

I used Rainbow Voyages to help me plan a trip wasn't sure where I wanted to go just was sure I needed a break so I found this travel agency on my Google search for closest agency near me gave a call and I talk to the owner Paul Ferdinand I explained what I wanted and Paul gave me lots of options I settled on Jamaica I listened to Paul after agreeing this sounds like the place I want to go to to get away and relax he was telling me how everything would go how the people are he told me pretty much what I was paying for and what was going to happen once I arrived in Jamaica ok everything Paul said far exceeded my expectations from the greeter at the airport who took us straight to customs avoiding hundreds of people to the Mobay lounge where after going through customs we sat drinking and eating waiting for our transportation to the resort I mean I can go on and on but it would be to much to put use Paul's agency everything he told me was true he's my new agent for every trip form this point on such an awesome person and he will be there with you the entire process even making sure you get home safely so pleased and thankful for Paul

Hi Lex! Thank you for your sterling review of my planning services here at Rainbow Voyages! It's music to my ears. From the pictures, it sure looks like Alicia and yourself enjoyed all the pampering from the butlers at the Preferred Club at Wild Orchid. I couldn't have arranged such a perfect vacation without my local contacts, including the welcoming staff at Club Mobay. I look forward to planning your next vacation and thank you for choosing Rainbow Voyages.

Paul is an amazing resource. He walked my wife and I through each step of travel. We knew what to expect at every level. He took time to help us figure out the best destination for our honeymoon. This was the second time that we worked with him. He's a true professional. You don't meet people as conscientious as him these days. I'm grateful that we found him!

Hi Faith! Thanks for the glowing 5 star review. I'm so glad my efforts contributed to the enjoyment of your holiday in sunny Aruba. Thanks for choosing me to plan your winter getaway from chilly Philly! I look forward to helping you with your future travels!

Paul was awesome. He made himself available when we needed him. He walked us through all of the vacation possibilities that we could afford with expertise. He kept in great contact with us around flight information. He was able to tell us what we would need to know as a gay couple traveling to another country. We had a wonderful vacation and he helped to make it happen!

We're just back from our honeymoon to Hawaii and have a lot to say about Paul Ferdinand and Rainbow Voyages. If you want someone who knows Hawaii, Paul's your man. There are too many touches Paul added to our trip to list them all; from champagne, flowers and candy awaiting us in our rooms, to alerting us to flight delays and adjusting restaurant reservations and excursion arrangements during our trip. Here are but a few. Paul guided us through every step of planning our trip. He knew where to go and where to avoid. He knew which hotels would suit us; all the restaurants to recommend; all the excursions to choose; and what to watch out for. For example, we wanted to book a helicopter tour of Kauai. Paul knew which tour to take and, more importantly, to request "first class" seats on the helicopter. So, we sat up front with the pilot, while others on the flight sat behind. Sure, they had a good view, but not as good as ours. Also, we wanted to see the sun rise from atop Haleakala on Maui. We thought riding a bike down would be fun. Well, I'm glad Paul was at hand to offer caution. We're newlyweds, but not youngsters. As it turned out, Paul's recommendation to book a van up and back was spot on. After our excursion, it was clear to us that riding bikes down Haleakala could have been a bit much at our age. Good call, Paul. And, Paul was on the job throughout our trip. Without prompting from us, Paul called in advance and confirmed each excursion we had booked. When we wanted to change an excursion, Paul took care of all the legwork. Moreover, he kept tabs on our flights. So, for example, when our flight from Maui to Kauai was delayed, he knew it could affect our restaurant reservation and made the necessary changes. In short, Paul spoiled us. We could not recommend him more enthusiastically.

Rainbow Voyages recently helped us plan our honeymoon in Hawaii and they did a phenomenal job!! Paul Ferdinand took into consideration our time constraint, budget and the hotel we wanted to find us a package that fit what we asked for. He was professional, friendly, helpful, and prompt. He was on top of time lines for payment, sent us information on places to eat and things to do in Honolulu, and made sure all of the travel information was clear. He made himself available to us during our honeymoon in case we had any issues with our flight or hotel or if we wanted him to book anything while we were there. Paul went above and beyond as our travel agent! We had a perfect honeymoon on Oah'u and will be using Rainbow Voyages for future trips without a doubt!! Paul was very knowledgeable and we HIGHLY recommend using Rainbow Voyages for planning your vacation!

A lesbian couple looking for LGBTQ+ cities on a browser with a Rainbow Meter selector for gay travel hot spots

Over 125 cities and counting!

We’re going beyond the usual gay travel articles—we’re here to help you discover the most up-to-date LGBTQ+ events, nightlife, destinations, festivals, parties, clubs, cruises and more that match your spirit of adventure. Our real-time ranking system will keep you in the know, so even if you’re setting off alone, you’ll have trusted guidance at your side.

Why trust us?

We’re part of the community..

We have been around the world searching for hot spots just like you—so we get the perks and pitfalls of traveling while LGBTQ+. That’s why we wanted to raise the bar when it comes to gay travel planning. We know an inclusive space means more than a flying a rainbow flag outside (though that does help).

We’ve been there. We’ve got experience.

What we bring to the table that’s a bit different than some gay travel sites, is that we have really been in your amazing shoes stomping around these cities, venues, and events. Our recommendations are LGBTQ+ friendly, so you don’t have to deal with ordering your cocktail with a side of judgment.

We’re big fans of inclusivity.

While “gay travel” might act like an umbrella term to some, we know that there are so many unique identities and experiences that make our beautiful LGBTQ+ community. Our goal is to represent all people under our rainbow, because everyone deserves to feel acceptance and love wherever they go.

A one-of-a- kind rating system

Admit it. You love to judge (places, of course, not people). We’re pretty proud of our rainbow color-coded system, because it’s what sets us apart from other gay travel sites. Our scale lets you see what’s hot and what will leave you cold, plus see what your fellow LGBTQ+ travelers really think of a city, venue, festival, or event.

A transgender woman who is part of the LGBTQ+ community searching for gay pride events on a mobile phone in a holographic scene

An easy way to rate.

Have your own gay travel influencer moment. After you hit up a new city, venue or event, let our community know what you thought by adding your own rating with our handy Rainbow Meter. So, if you’ve got lots of opinions or just want to let us know you had a great time, we want to hear about it.

Your reviews will help future LGBTQ+ travelers know what’s a must-see spot wherever you’ve been. Or, let us know if we need to update our info, sometimes places close or events change - we like to stay informed. It’s a great way to support the community while you see the world.

Take the Rainbow Meter for a spin!

Check out how we rank our listings. Slide the rating meter and show us how you really feel.

Your ratings help us highlight stand-out places and experiences and let fellow LGBTQ+ travelers find the right vibe for them.

Get a sneak peek at the roads less traveled.

So, how does this work anyway?

Call us overachievers, but we thought the world of gay travel research needed a little zhuzhing up. We’ve left no stone unturned - and no bar stool unsat in - to build you a comprehensive rating system to supplement all those gay travel “10 best” lists you’ve been reading.

The land lover’s guide to cruising with virgin voyages.

Richard Branson’s cruise line is creating new on-land excursions — just epic enough to make you want to set sail.

The Scarlet Lady is one of four Virgin branded cruise ships.

On a recent Tuesday in May, three neither rich nor famous ladies are running full-tilt through the streets of Cannes, France, past the star-studded red carpet during the opening of its 77th annual film festival. In just a few hours, Meryl Streep will arrive to receive her Honorary Palme d'Or prize. And the latest films from legends like Francis Ford Coppola, George Miller and Kevin Costner will have their world premieres.

Meanwhile, we three amigos are dodging the French police, skirting a wall of metal barricades, and elbowing through a crush of paparazzi snapping photos — of everyone but us.

“If you fall, I’m not carrying you back to the boat!” shouts my ship-mate Jo, as her flip-flops smack the pavement. “I’m not going to fall!” I shout back, gaining speed despite being in a somewhat sozzled state courtesy of the iconic Carlton Cannes hotel — a truly wonderful spot to witness Hollywood royalty roll by sur La Croisette. But that’s beside the point. We’ve got to get back to the floating resort called Scarlet Lady before we’re left stranded on the French Riviera without her 20 restaurants, two outdoor pools, full-service spa, fitness center and our own Mega Rock Star cabin with an ocean-facing balcony, fully stocked bar and dedicated butler.

The Rock Star robe confers cabin status.

In my defense, being deposited on shore during the Cannes film festival is really THE time to wear impossibly high heels if there ever was one. Because being dressed for the unexpected, spontaneous bursts of joy that just happen-to-happen before, during, or after an on-land excursion is, in my humble opinion, the entire point of cruising in the first place.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

For better or worse, cruising is back. Carnival , Norwegian and Royal Caribbean all reported entering the year with record highs for individual bookings and cruise pricing. Though Virgin Voyages is a relatively small player in the mega-ship space with only three ships in operation (its fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, will set sail September 2025 from New York City), the company is leaning heavily into its “ Shore Things ” excursions. Exclusive or novel on-land tours are a clear way to differentiate their product offerings and increase bookings. Having recently raised $550 million from investors , the pressure to do so is high.

On average, only 30% of Virgin sailors book tours according to Shore Things manager Ali Samms, which means there’s room to grow. Of course, others are doing the same ; evermore elaborate excursions are becoming table-stakes for the industry.

“We usually offer 15 to 20 tours per port, at varying price points,” Natasha Salzedo, Virgin Voyages Director of Itineraries and Destinations, explains. “Everyone has different expectations, so I’m hoping we can find something everyone can connect with and really delve into the destination. ‘Off the beaten path’ means something a little different for everybody, but really being able to uncover hidden gems that a sailor would have never known about or weren’t able to experience before — that’s the idea.”

This summer and into the fall, Scarlet Lady is sailing seven-night Mediterranean itineraries out of Barcelona dubbed “ Irresistible Med ” and “ French Daze & Ibiza Nights .” Choosing the latter, I convinced Jo, my friend of 28 years, who, like me, gave birth in the dire circumstances of 2020, to celebrate this Mother’s Day by going all-in and signing up for excursions in every possible port of call, including Marseilles, Cannes, Mallorca and Ibiza. To us, the prospect of a whole week without wiping noses or soothing toddler tantrums is like telling us we’re about to be beamed to the moon. We don’t believe it until…

A massive 912-foot honker, emblazoned with the scantily-clad Scarlet mermaid, presents herself in the middle of Barcelona’s busy port. The high seas await!

Sip Lounge Champagne Bar

We’re welcomed onboard with champagne flutes and ushered into a swanky lounge bar, where we’re checked-in to our Tom Dixon-designed RockStar suite, complete with vinyl record player and adjustable mood lighting. There are 1,330 cabins and 78 RockStar quarters aboard the Scarlet Lady, where we expect to receive “RockStar” treatment.

Which is fitting, as this is a very Branson boat. Meaning, it’s an adults-only party staffed by omnipresent DJs. There are solo traveler itineraries, with plenty of opportunities for singles to coagulate. And, on Scarlet Night, the week’s biggest party, people end up dancing in the pool with hired dancers and drag queens. Here are the highlights:

Cassis, France

MARSEILLE | DAY 2

The Calanques Coast by Boat and Foot

At first glance, Marseille is massive, gritty and chaotic. But as our tour bus heads east down the highway, the busy port soon gives way to the vineyards of Cassis, a cheerfully-colored seaside town, famous for its dramatic cliffs and crisp rosé wine. We admire the hand-painted boats along the docks until it's time to get in one, a small sightseeing charter, which takes us out for a close-up look at Les Calanques — a dramatic coastline of powder-white limestone cliffs, covered in tall, thin pine trees that grow straight up from the rocks, and seem to peer over the azure bays below.

Our Franglish-speaking tour guide, Audrey, grew up outside Marseille, and provides us with a basic overview of each place-of-interest. She points out Port-Miou, a natural cove with its own small, sandy beach, though evidently it would be too cold (in May), or too time-consuming for our group to stop and swim. So, we head back to Cassis, and are left with under two hours “at leisure.” At this point, we’re starving, so four of us take the boat captain’s advice and head to La Vieille Auberge , one of many French bistros along the harbor. “Go there, not there” he grunts through leathery-tan skin. “Next door, people get sick.” Like they say, locals know best. It’s touristy, but we don’t care, because the tuna tartare is fresh, the Sancerre is flowing and the daube provençale (beef bourguignon) is served in its own copper pot. We’re in France mes amis , let the gourmet games begin!

Welcome to the Carlton Cannes hotel, the icon of the French Riviera

CANNES | DAY 3

Red, White, & Rosé Days

Bright and early (around 9am cruise time) we’re speeding towards the shore in a small tender boat, chatting away with a serial-cruising couple from Dallas, when suddenly the Cannes coastline unfurls before our eyes. The buildings look pink, nestled into hillside cliffs, gently waking up with the morning sun. La Côte D’Azur.

Firmly on land, our guide Sandrine from Nice shepherds us into a bus, which drives (painfully) away from Cannes, just as it prepares for its film festival close-up. Alas, we have no choice. This is a group tour, which require a go-with-the-flow mentality, so we hurtle along the coast past Pierre Cardin’s bizarre bubble house, the stunning red rocks of Cap Roux and through the Provençal countryside towards Taradeau, grounds of Château Saint-Martin , which dates back to 1740. The cellar tour and wine tasting is an opportunity to socialize with other sailors. After the third pour of light and fruity Eternelle Favorite rosé, everyone is sharing their experiences and feeling appreciative of the thirsty 18th-century monks who originally made this place a wine-making priory. Their stone cellar is still in use.

By 2:30pm, we’re deposited back in Cannes, with the caveat that we must return to the boat by 7:30pm. That’s five glorious hours to be here on this night of nights, when the whole city comes alive with excitement. Women are decked out to the nines with the GDPs of small nations hanging on their necks. We scurry along the Croisette to the Carlton Cannes hotel because we cliché Americans are still in love with the 1995 movie French Kiss . Remember when Meg Ryan pratfalls over the dessert tray? This is that hotel. There’s zero chance we’re getting a table. But we have to try. I give the doorman my warmest smile, and the next thing you know, we’re escorted past a lobby press conference and a bright-eyed bartender is asking how we like our martinis. Clean with ice cold Tanqueray in a coupe glass, merci .

A stop at Son Marroig, outside Deià, a magical village in Mallorca.

PALMA DE MALLORCA | DAY 5

Culture in Valldemossa and Lunch in Deià

After Cannes, it’s a blessing that we have a day in-between excursions at sea. These are days to rest, exercise, play, work (the free-wifi actually works thanks to Starlink), and then try not to overeat — all food is included in your ticket price — on this floating party resort. The reprieve gives us the energy we’ll need for what happens today: our first-ever visit to Mallorca, which rises from the Balearic sea like a Moorish dream. The word that comes to mind is: exquisite.

Our official Mallorcan guide, Dominik Gelada Rabiger deserves a mention, because he gives the best tour yet. On group jaunts like these, the quality of your experience depends almost entirely on the guide. Rabiger was born and raised here, speaks English, German and Spanish, and knows everything there is to know about this island. On the bus ride through the Tramuntana mountains to Valldemossa, he regales us with the island’s history (Mallorca switched between Roman, Byzantine, and Moor rule before becoming the autonomous region of Spain it is today). Next, we tour the grand old monastery La Cartuja, once home to kings, monks, and the Polish composer Frédéric Chopin and his French mistress, novelist Amantine Dupin (1804-1876), who used the pseudonym George Sand. Frankly, the town is really milking the couple’s three months here, when Chopin was quarantined with tuberculosis, for all the tourist dollars it can — but we don’t mind. We’re treated to a 15-minute piano recital in the concert hall, which occurs eight times daily in summer, and then emerge to a sunny afternoon, free to buy cutesy souvenirs like these Spanish espadrilles .

Our next stop solidifies my stance: great excursions can justify a cruise. An al fresco lunch overlooking the sea has been organized in Deià, at La Residencia, a Belmond hotel . If you follow luxury hotels, you know Belmond is one of the world’s best brands, and this particular property — formerly owned in the 1980s by Richard Branson himself (word is he’s been trying to buy it back ever since) — is everything a hotel lover could ask for, starting with the stone entrance. To get to lunch, we hike the pavers up to Restaurante Miro’s terrace, past lush landscaping overflowing with lavender, lemon trees, olive trees and the seductive scent of white jasmine.

The tables are beautifully set with local wines (read: unavailable back home), homemade breads, and plenty of Mallorcan olives and olive oil. Salads are a mix of tomato and mozzarella full of Jabugo ham from pure-bred Ibérico pigs dressed in balsamic cream, followed by beef tenderloin with potato gnocchi in a red wine sauce. We wash it all down with a Raimat cabernet , and finish the elegant meal with perfect rectangles of homemade almond cake, served with a side of deeply comforting almond gelato.

Let’s just say, I’m already counting the days until I return to stay here for as long as humanly possible. Fun fact: United Airlines flies direct from Newark to Palma.

IBIZA | DAY 6-7

Ibiza Beach Club Experience

To culminate the week, an overnight stay in Ibiza is the night many on this party-happy cruise ship have been waiting for. For us mamas, the idea of clubbing until 4am sounds more like a nightmare. Judging from our short stint at the Scarlet Lady’s nightclub, the Manor, we wouldn’t last more than 30 minutes inside Ibiza’s Pacha, the famed oontz-oontz nightclub where everyone else is headed. Instead, we merry sailors (now a tight-knit group of four) head to the Six Senses resort on the north side of the island, just a 30-minute Uber ride away. Ibiza’s sunset, seen from the Beach Caves restaurant at Six Senses, is spectacular. The strum of the guitar from the long-haired, barefoot smiling Spanish buddha, Juan Calero Navalon, is the kind of transporting experience that encapsulates why people travel in the first place.

By the next morning, we’re ripe for rest and relaxation. Thankfully, the ‘beach club experience’ involves lying down on a full sized foam mattress (with pillows!) right out on the sand at the Nassau Beach Club . This venue is the most touristy yet, but once again, that doesn’t bother us because we’re shaded by a large umbrella, drinking a complimentary pitcher of Sangria, enjoying the views. These people bring hooch beachwear to another level. Diamond mesh doesn’t cover anything, honey!

Very soon, our adventure will come to a close and we’ll be flying coach from Barcelona back to real life. But daytime in Ibiza is a bit like daytime in Las Vegas — it’s just what we need to emotionally move on. It also helps that Gaya, our exceptionally helpful “Mega Rockstar Agent,” essentially a cabin butler, has already organized our car transfer back to the airport without us having to lift a finger. A hospitality graduate from Mumbai, she has looked after our every need throughout the week.

There are some experiences you only dream about and there are those you didn't know you needed — until they're right in front of you. Gleefully chasing the ship from the Cannes promenade during the film festival is one I’ll never forget, nor is watching the sun dip into the sea off the coast of Ibiza. What will last, long after we return home, is the positive effect on our friendship. For us, it means that every time we wear our espadrilles or make espresso in our duty-free Barcelona cups, we will think wistfully of Mother’s Day-Week — which, after this most epic working-mom cruise — should definitely become a thing.

7 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE BOOKING

  • Bookings: Virgin heavily promotes Shore Excursions weeks before boarding via email marketing blasts. Don’t ignore them. Book your excursions early, or they will be sold out, because there are not enough seats to go around.
  • Passport: You do not need to carry your passport. Store it in your safe on the boat; just make sure you’re back on board on time! Your tour guide will remind you of your curfew time at least thrice.
  • Paperwork: You’ll be asked to sign a ticket contract before embarkation and liability waivers on tour buses. It’s par for the course.
  • Tips: No tips are needed for tour guides. Tipping is included in your voyage fare.
  • Refunds: Shore Things are fully refundable, if you cancel 48 hours before the start of the excursion taking place. You can use the Virgin Voyages App to do this, which the company makes you download before boarding. It’s where you’ll find your itinerary, communicate with staff, or order food and drinks to your cabin.
  • Pricing: Virgin Voyages uses dynamic pricing to dictate tour pricing (the higher demand for a specific tour, the higher the price). Per their website, “Please be aware that price will vary by voyage and can be found in your app or by calling Sailor Services.” When you see ‘Starting from,’ take it with a grain of salt. Our Shore Things ranged from $320 to $530.
  • Tour Operators : “This Shore Thing operator has received third-party certification based on the Global Sustainable Tourism Council criteria” is listed on each of the above tours. If it’s not listed, choose one that is.

Video shows incredible nighttime rainbow form in Yosemite National Park

rainbow voyages travel

Rainbows can occur anywhere light and water droplets cross paths, even at night.

A celestial light show was captured in California's Yosemite National Park recently, one of the “very few waterfall sites" in the world where moonbows − or nighttime rainbows − can consistently be seen, according to reporting by the Los Angeles Times.

Both rainbows and lunar rainbows form in the same way, the only difference is the light source.

Lunar rainbows are created when the moon’s light reflects off of water droplets suspended in air, producing a rainbow of colors wherever the light and water touch, according to The Weather Channel.  The colors on display also tend to be a lot less vibrant at night because there is less light available.

“Our moon must be nearly full in order to provide enough light for moonbows to form. Even as a full moon, our natural satellite doesn't provide nearly as much light as the sun,” according to The Weather Channel.

The window for witnessing a moonbow at Yosemite may be closing next month, but you can see the spectacular sight in a time-lapse video below. (The season generally starts in April and ends in June.)

Watch a moonbow form at Yosemite National Park in real time

The 40-second clip shows how a moonbow forms in real time. It starts when the moon’s light “refracts, or bounces” through rain drops. The light is then separated at different angles within the raindrops, creating a prism of multiple colors, according to The Weather Channel.

Since humans struggle to detect color at night, the light emitted by moonbows appears white to the naked eye, according to the Los Angeles Times. Photographs usually tend to be the best bet to catch a moonbow in full technicolor, newspaper reported.

Another moonbow or moonbows will likely be visible in Yosemite from June 19 to 23, which are the next full moon dates, the paper reported.

Splendid day trips you can take from Las Vegas — each less than a two-hour drive

Places shown: Valley of Fire State Park, Emerald Cave, Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area and Las Vegas Ballpark.

VEGAS-dropcap-I.png

I have a new system for beating the casinos in Las Vegas: I don’t spend a penny on the slots, the tables or the sports books. Instead, I bet heavily on red and green.

Red rocks and green waters, that is. Hiking and kayaking.

I tested the system on a series of day trips last month. Though I slept three nights in a hotel on the Strip, I headed out of town every day.

First: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Later, Valley of Fire State Park and the Colorado River’s Black Canyon, where the waters of Emerald Cave eerily glow. Then a night of minor league baseball.

None of these adventures took me more than 60 miles from the Strip (a.k.a. Las Vegas Boulevard). Yet the psychological distance seemed enormous. Maybe it’s no surprise that many climbers and other outdoorsy types have moved to Las Vegas for the access it gives them to rocks, mountains and such.

You know that semi-vacant look on so many slot machine players’ faces? You don’t see that so much on the trail or the river, even when the path is uphill or the paddling is against the wind. And it’s tough to find a poker face in the Las Vegas Ballpark when management is staging an Elvis karaoke competition between innings.

Here’s a rundown.

People bicycle on a road toward red rock hills, with larger hills in the distance

Red Rock Canyon

Driving distance from the Strip: About 30 minutes from the Stratosphere tower.

What makes it great : You’ll have no trouble finding the scenery at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area .

Solitude might take a little longer, because the canyon is immensely popular and only an 18- to 22-mile drive from the Strip, depending on your route. Once there, you can hike, bike or drive a 13-mile loop through a landscape of stacked and tumbled boulders, some fiery red, some chalky white, many so strangely striated that you may suspect they’ve been scrubbed with steel wool.

Striated rocks and red rock cliffsides at Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area.

Many of the formations are Jurassic sand dunes that have been hardened to sandstone by time. You can drive between or hike on 16 trails threaded through the rocks, junipers and some Joshua trees too.

For drivers and cyclists, it’s a one-way route, with a speed limit of 35 mph, on a wonderfully smooth two-lane blacktop. For hikers, the trails range from 800 feet to 14 miles, easy to difficult, and there are more just beyond the loop.

If you go: Once you start driving the loop, you’ll almost immediately want to pull over because the scenery is so arresting. Don’t. It’s illegal. And the first parking lot, Calico Hills, comes up soon, followed by about 10 more in 13 miles. Most have restrooms.

I made my visit just before sunset. Early morning would be good too — you get dramatic light and avoid the worst of the heat.

In cooler months (Oct. 1 through May 31), you’ll need to book a timed reservation to drive through between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. In summer, you don’t need a timed reservation, but you’ll still need to pay $20 per car (unless you have a national parks pass).

Black Canyon and Emerald Cave

Groups of kayakers in emerald-green water, surrounded by rocky cliffs.

Driving distance from the Strip: About an hour and 15 minutes.

What makes it great: What if you flooded a red rock canyon and set multitudes of Nevadans and visitors loose on assorted watercraft? Lake Mead National Recreation Area , a 38-mile drive east of Vegas, is the lively answer to that question.

Most of the action is on the lake itself, which was created in 1936 by the construction of Boulder Dam (now Hoover Dam) along the Colorado River. But about 15 miles downriver from the dam, you’ll find Willow Beach and the Black Canyon Water Trail , a great place to kayak.

After a 60-mile drive southeast from the Strip, I was floating with a tour group in gentle waters (no rapids here) at the foot of 1,500-foot cliffs.

“Let’s go to Arizona,” our guide said — which simply meant paddling from one side of the river to the other.

I had signed on with Blazin’ Paddles , one of several kayak tour companies that paddle out of Willow Beach Marina on the Arizona side. The marina is about 15 miles downriver from the dam. Because it’s part of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, entrance is $25 per car.

There were dozens of kayakers in groups ahead of me, in part because paddling in a shady canyon is a pretty good way to spend a 95-degree day, in part because Instagram has made Emerald Cave a star.

The cave, a 2-mile paddle from Willow Beach, is only about the size of a two-bedroom apartment. But the way its waters glow green makes for great pictures. It’s the centerpiece of most half-day tours, and guides say they’ve fit as many as 23 kayaks in there at a time.

If your excursion is like mine, you’ll run into a traffic jam outside the cave and the wait will be about 45 minutes. Sometimes it’s over an hour, guides say.

But remember, you’ll be in a kayak beneath tall cliffs, keeping an eye out for desert bighorn sheep, possibly engaging in splash skirmishes with fellow paddlers. Life could be worse. And once you’re in the cave, the sight is memorable. If you’ve ever taken a rowboat into the Blue Grotto on the Italian isle of Capri, this cave’s interior will give you déja vù in another hue.

For the record, we wedged 17 kayaks and a canoe into the cave. And on the way back to the marina, we spotted a bald eagle.

Four miles of kayaking, with a cave in the middle and a stop to hop out for a view, is just about perfect for a three-hour excursion. I paid $110. (With shuttle bus service from the Strip, it’s $149.)

If you go : The best time for Emerald Cave photos is said to be midday, when I was there. But if you get there early or late, you’ll have less company.

There’s a store at Willow Beach Marina that sells snacks, sunblock, hats, water shoes, dry bags and boating and fishing supplies; open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily in summer. There’s also a restaurant, Black Canyon Grill, open daily for lunch in summer; open Fridays to Sundays for most of March, April, May, September and October; and closed November to February.

You can also take a quick, free look at Hoover Dam (22 miles from Willow Beach) by parking in a free lot on the Arizona side of the river (parking is $10 on the Nevada side) and walking across the dam. Entry to the Visitor Center exhibits and observation deck is $10. There are also guided dam tours available, first come, first served. Boulder City , 6.5 miles from the dam, has several restaurants and antique shops.

Valley of Fire State Park

People appear tiny as they walk among reddish-orange boulders and dunes

Driving distance from the Strip: About 55 minutes.

What makes it great: Even after I saw Red Rock Canyon, I didn’t fully understand how easily outback Nevada can pass for outback Utah. The Valley of Fire — about 55 miles northeast of the Strip — educated me further.

It also lured me into a few furnace-hot gullies and showed me miles of red sandstone, gray limestone, slot canyons and crazy-shaped boulders, all scattered on a desert floor that long ago was an ocean floor. Some boulders are decorated with petroglyphs older than all of our leading presidential candidates put together.

More specifically, because I read some signs, I can tell you that the petroglyphs are more than 2,000 years old, and also that a petroglyph is cut into stone; a pictograph is painted on stone.

(Christopher Reynolds / Los Angeles Times)

Valley of Fire, Nevada’s first state park, has one through road, two campgrounds and several rock-climbing spots. But keep this place’s name in mind. It gets so hot (up to 120 degrees) that from May 15 to Sept. 30 this year, rangers have closed all trails longer than 1 mile.

Sticking within that limit, I wandered among the Beehives rock formations near the park’s western entrance and climbed the stairs to Atlatl Rock (where an ancient inscribed hand seems to be giving the finger to all who pass). I also walked the 0.7-mile Mouse’s Tank Trail and 1-mile Rainbow Vista trail, but it was close to 100 degrees, and the sandy path may give you that swimming-in-syrup sensation.

If you go: Park entrance is $10 per vehicle ($15 for out-of-state vehicles). The rangers’ 1-mile limit means that until October, nobody can hike the Fire Wave, Seven Wonders Loop or the White Domes Loop.

Still, it’s a thrill to follow White Domes Road north from the visitor center as it twists and squeezes between boulders.

The Moapa Valley town of Overton, 9 miles north of the park’s eastern entrance, is home to the Lost City Museum , created in the 1930s to showcase Native artifacts that long predate the creation of Lake Mead. On Overton’s Main Street, the Inside Scoop cafe has ice cream and makes a topnotch $8 tuna salad sandwich.

Aviators baseball in Las Vegas Ballpark

Las Vegas Ballpark, home to the minor-league Las Vegas Aviators.

Driving distance from the Strip: About 25 minutes.

What makes it great: Strictly speaking, the Las Vegas Ballpark isn’t a full day trip, but this may be the most family-friendly of these excursions, so it needs to be here.

The ballpark, home to the AAA Aviators baseball team, stands in the Vegas suburb of Summerlin, about 15 miles from the Strip. You could spend all day in a casino and still make 7 p.m. game time. (Or you could head for the ballpark after exploring Red Rock Canyon, which is practically next door.)

Whenever you arrive, your blood pressure is likely to ease once you step in. It’s a gorgeous ballpark, completed in 2019 with a capacity of just 10,000, so it feels intimate. You can spread a blanket on the grassy berm overlooking right field, and there’s a good chance a local 15-year-old will be singing the national anthem.

But there’s also a bright, high-resolution scoreboard, a swimming pool beyond center field (yes, that costs extra) and food options that include tri-tip sandwiches and avocado chicken burritos.

A worker squirt salsa on a burrito-in-the-making at Las Vegas Ballpark

You can count on silly games between innings (including a cardboard airplane-throwing contest), brand ambassadors handing out merch and kids scrambling for foul balls. Beers start at $10, hot dogs at $6.50. (And there are cocktails, because Las Vegas.)

On the night I came, attendance was 5,042 people and 99 dogs (because it was bring-your-dog night).

Unless you’re a devotee of the El Paso Chihuahuas, Salt Lake Bees or Reno Aces, you won’t recognize any of these hopeful young players. But that will hardly matter — especially if (as I witnessed) the center fielder makes a leaping grab to save a 9-7 win for the home team.

If you go: Tickets start at $14 (for a spot on the berm in right field), but if you buy online in advance, the middleman fees will push that to about $20.

Las Vegas, a Dodgers farm team from 2001-08, is now a farm team for the Oakland Athletics. It’s a tad awkward that the Athletics have announced that they’ll be moving to Las Vegas in a few years. But for now, the Aviators are here and you can be too.

There are no slot machines in the ballpark and no sports betting area. In fact, the only casino with a prominent ad posted is nearby Red Rock Resort.

You can check the schedule to see when the Aviators are playing at home. The season runs through Sept. 22, and the AAA national championship game will be in the ballpark on Sept. 28.
