BMW PGA Championship Winners and History – European Tour

pga european tour wentworth

Founded in 1955, the BMW PGA Championship originally was known as the British PGA Championship. It has since gone through thirteen name changes and sponsors.

NOTE: This entry is for the European Tour event. Click here for the PGA TOUR’s Fedex Cup Playoff event .

Since 1984, the tournament has been played at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England. The European Tour’s headquarter is at Wentworth Club.

The BMW PGA Championship in its various forms long has been regarded as the European’s Tour flagship event. It is designated as the European Tour’s “Premier Event” for World Golf Rankings. Until 2009 and the introduction of the Dubai World Championship it also was the tournament with the European Tour’s highest prize.

Colin Montgomerie, Bernhard Langer, Nick Faldo and Peter Alliss have the most wins, with three each.

And, while Arnold Palmer never won the PGA Championship to complete the Career Grand Slam, he DID win the European PGA Championship in 1975.

The name is somewhat confusing, for there is also a PGA Championship in the United States, and a BMW Championship on the PGA TOUR, which was formerly the Western Open.

A list of past BMW PGA Championship winners follows

The BMW PGA Championship, a flagship event on the European Tour, has already kicked off at the Wentworth Golf Club in England. Even though the PGA Tour season is over, we will have plenty of action to look forward to at this leading tournament for the professional men golfers.

Initially, it had the highest prize money for any event which the tour organized, but this changed in 2009 with the introduction of the $10 million Dubai World Championship at the end of the season. The World Golf championship and the majors are some of the top lucrative events on the tour, but other governing bodies organize these. Moreover, for the purposes of official rankings, this is an important tour, as it offers 64 ranking points to the winner.

History of the BMW PGA Championship venue: Everything you need to know

The Wentworth Golf Club in Surrey, England, is a par-72 course, founded in 1922. It is the location of the PGA European Tour headquarters and was also the venue for the 1953 Ryder Cup! The West Course, which is the venue for the BMW PGA Championship, is designed by the famous Henry Colt. Since 2005, it has undergone a lot of redesigning by golfer and designer Ernie Els.

It is an interesting course, with hazards that are blended into the natural environment. However, it is not overly difficult, unless taken over by the heavy winds. So, keeping into account the history of play, chances are that the winner will end up in the 15-20 under par range if all goes well.

10 Things You Didn't Know About The DP World Tour

Here are 10 things you may not be familiar with about the Europe-based circuit

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

The DP World Tour flag

The DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) is one of the most well-regarded and established circuits in the game, with some of the best-known tournaments around, including the Dubai Desert Classic and its flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship.

While it doesn't boast the same status as the US-based PGA Tour, it still forms an integral part of the game's professional landscape. Here are some facts about the Tour that you may not be familiar with.

1. The roots of the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) go back to 1972, when the Professional Golfers' Association, which was established 71 years earlier to serve the interests of golfers in Great Britain and Ireland, created it.

2. It began with 20 tournaments and the season ran from April to October. The action took place in nine countries – Spain, England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Switzerland, West Germany, the Netherlands and Italy.

3. The inaugural European Tour event was the Spanish Open, which was held at Golf Club de Pals in Girona. Fittingly, two Spaniards battled it out for the title in a playoff, with Antonio Garrido emerging the winner over Valentin Barrios. The purse for the tournament was £10,000.

4. Nowadays, DP World Tour events take place around the world, but it was strictly a Europe-only affair for the first decade of its existence. That changed in 1982 with the first tournament to be played outside the continent – the Tunisian Open in Africa. Garrido once again claimed the title after beating compatriot Manuel Calero in a playoff.

5. The DP World Tour’s headquarters are at Wentworth in Surrey, England. From there, the PGA European Tour, to give it its legal title, also runs the European Senior Tour (currently the Legends Tour), the developmental Challenge Tour and G4D Tour. It is also the lead partner in Ryder Cup Europe.

6. Some of the highest-profile DP World Tour events take place in Asia, but it wasn’t until 1989 that the continent hosted one of its events with the inaugural Dubai Desert Classic (then called the Karl Litten Desert Classic). The tournament was won by Mark James, who beat Peter O’Malley by four shots to claim the $75,000 first prize.

7. In 2015, including Majors and World Golf Championships, more of the DP World Tour’s tournaments were held outside Europe than within it for the first time.

8. In 1998, The Masters, PGA Championship and US Open were added to the schedule, meaning prize money earned by players in the Majors could be added to the European Tour’s Order of Merit, which affected the end-of-season rankings. Not only that, but with a minimum requirement of 11 appearances needed for players to retain membership of the Tour, the addition of the Majors – along with three World Golf Championships in 1990 – made it easier for players to reach that target.

9. Seve Ballesteros holds the record for the highest number of DP World Tour wins with 50, eight more than Bernhard Langer in second place. Ballesteros’ first win on the Tour came in the 1976 Dutch Open, with the last in his homeland at the 1995 Spanish Open.

Seve Ballesteros after his 1995 Spanish Open win

Seve Ballesteros holds the record for most European Tour wins, with the last of 50 coming in the 1995 Spanish Open

10. The total prize money for the inaugural season of the Tour (excluding Majors) was £290,500. Adjusted for inflation, that would be £3.3m today (around $4m). In 2024, the prize fund will be $148.5m (approximately £121.5m).

Why Bob MacIntyre has not been nominated for PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honours

The real reason why Scotland's Bob MacIntyre is not in the running to win 2024 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year.

pga european tour wentworth

Confused as to why Bob MacIntyre has not been named as one of five nominations for 2024 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honours, even though he won twice in his first full season on the PGA Tour?

Well there is one very good reason.

He is not actually eligible for the award.

Despite earning his first full PGA Tour card for 2024 when securing one of the 10 cards available through the DP World Tour last season, the Scot had already surpassed his rookie status having made a number of appearances on the circuit since 2020.

Once a player has competed in more than seven events during a PGA Tour season, they shed their rookie tag for the following season.

MacIntyre participated in 13 events during the 2020/21 PGA Tour season.

He made the cut 11 times throughout that campaign and finished in the top 25 four times.

MacIntyre was not an official PGA Tour rookie in 2024

MacIntyre then played in eight tournaments on the PGA Tour during the 2021/22 season.

He made six cuts that season and notched two top-25 finishes.

MacIntyre played in just three events on the PGA Tour during the 2022/23 season, making the cut twice and finishing once in the top 25.

The Scot decided to spend the majority of last season fighting to earn one of the 10 full-time PGA Tour cards available through the DP World Tour standings, something he went on to achieve when finishing seventh on the list.

His performance on the DP World Tour last season also saw him earn a debut in Luke Donald's 2023 European Ryder Cup side after narrowly coming through the European Points List.

MacIntyre then performed admirably at the Ryder Cup last September, taking 2.5 points from a possible three as Team Europe ran out five-point victors in Rome.

Bob MacIntyre won the RBC Canadian Open in June

Fast forward nearly 12 months, and MacIntyre has taken his game to new heights by registering not one but two PGA Tour titles.

His first PGA Tour win came at the RBC Canadian Open in June.

It was an emotional victory, especially with his dad Dougie on the bag for him.

MacIntyre then brought the house down when capturing the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in July.

Those two PGA Tour wins were enough to see MacIntyre through to the 30-man Tour Championship at East Lake last week.

MacIntyre went on to finish T17.

In total, MacIntyre has played in 25 tournaments on the PGA Tour this season.

He has amassed $7.8m in prize money on the PGA Tour in 2024.

MacIntyre then won the Scottish Open on home soil

So all of the above explains why MacIntyre is ineligible for PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honours in 2024.

MacIntyre, 28, will now turn his attention to competing in a number of DP World Tour events to close out his 2024 season.

He will be in action at next week's Irish Open at Royal County Down, the following week's flagship BMW PGA at Wentworth and then the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with his father Dougie at St Andrews in early October.

The PGA Tour recently confirmed the following five players have been nominated for the coveted PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award:

  • Matthieu Pavon
  • Nick Dunlap
  • Alejandro Tosti
  • Michael Thorbjornsen

It looks like a straight shootout between Pavon and Dunlap.

Pavon won his first PGA Tour title at the Farmers Insurance Open earlier this season before finishing T17 in the FedEx Cup race, while Dunlap became the first player in PGA Tour history to win as an amateur (American Express) and a professional (Barracuda Championship) in one season.

The 2024 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year will be announced either later this season or in early 2025 at The Sentry in Hawaii, which is when Eric Cole was crowned the victor for 2023.

The PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award has been won by a number of the game's greats through the years, none bigger than Tiger Woods in 1996.

Other major champions such as John Daly (1991), Vijay Singh (1993), Ernie Els (1994), Xander Schauffele (2017) and Scottie Scheffler (2020) have also etched their name on the trophy.

Mark Carnevale, who won PGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 1992, sadly passed away in July this year.

The PGA Tour Rookie of the Year was first introduced in 1990.

There are many reasons why players choose this event or that, often to do with money. Seldom is the course top of the list, a fact which will be made clear by next week's Irish Open field. The same is true of the location of said course, because otherwise every single golfer with the required eligibility would be in the Swiss Alps for the Omega European Masters.

Crans Montana is likely on the bucket list of many readers because it's certainly on mine. And there, up in the mountains, is this preposterous, delightful little golf course, where Seve Ballesteros once hit the best shot hardly anybody witnessed. Even that fact has charm and it's no wonder Seve adored this place and all of its absurdity.

Unfortunately, because the FedEx Cup finished last week and the Irish Open is next week, we've only a handful of top-tier DP World Tour players, and only one from DataGolf's top 50. That's Matt Fitzpatrick, a two-time course winner who should've made it a hat-trick last year, only to step aside and allow Ludvig Aberg through. Perhaps that was Fitzpatrick's way of contributing towards European Ryder Cup success.

We therefore have a similar market to the British Masters, Fitzpatrick replacing Tyrrell Hatton, and despite his impeccable course form it's probably right that the Sheffield man is a bigger price. It's been a poor year by his lofty standards and returning to those DataGolf rankings, he's considerably further down than Hatton.

Then again, Fitzpatrick does have course form by the bucket-load and has won three of his last 25 DP World Tour starts. That love of Crans might be enough to spark him back to life and will certainly be enough for some to give him the benefit of the doubt. I, however, can't look past the fact his tee-to-green game has been ragged lately.

When assessing the chances of MATT WALLACE I find it hard to escape some of the very earliest things you learn about if you happen to be from a family of bookmakers, bettors, or both. I reckon even distant relative Godfrey of Bouillon liked a bet, you know.

  • CLICK HERE to back Wallace with Sky Bet

One is that you have to trust your eyes. This seems more and more archaic with every passing year, as we find out how a horse's stride pattern and their closing sectionals might help us to predict how they'll run next time. Still, the eye test for now retains plenty of relevance and I for one can't imagine ever discarding it.

The other concerns following horses – or golfers – off a cliff. The point here is to know when to get off; to understand that sometimes, experiments, projects, whatever you want to call them, well they have to be abandoned before you really do come unstuck.

Thankfully, selecting Wallace for the KLM Open and then again on his next DP World Tour start, at last week's British Masters, still leaves us some way short of the cliff edge. We're by the coast, absolutely, and we've seen the sea by now. But even a missed cut in Crans I don't think would see us tumble to a rocky death.

As for the eye test, well what can I say? Last week, he had next to no chance after half a dozen holes and ended round one right among the very worst putters in the tournament. Then he shot 68 on Friday, followed it with another 68 on Saturday and, while too far adrift to hold realistic title ambitions, added a third 68 on Sunday to finish inside the top 10.

In the KLM Open, he was two behind entering the final round. Then, at the first par-five, his third shot was half a club strong, directly over the flag, and after a heavy-handed pitch and three putts, he'd run up a tournament-ending seven. In the end, he'd have needed to shoot 68 on Sunday to feature in the play-off.

To say I think he's very close to putting four rounds together would be a major understatement and he knows it, too, so he was always going to feature in this week's staking plan providing the price was right. And, thanks in part to the presence of Fitzpatrick and the performance of Thriston Lawrence at the Belfry, the price is indeed right.

Sky Bet offer

Wallace was a slightly unfortunate runner-up behind Lawrence in 2022 then 24th last year, a particularly high-class renewal as the likes of Ludvig Aberg and Nicolai Hojgaard set about impressing Luke Donald ahead of the upcoming Ryder Cup. That he wasn't on the radar himself, despite a runner-up finish the previous week, tells you how poor he'd been throughout summer having won on the PGA Tour back in March.

Second place to Lawrence came a few weeks after a missed cut at the Wyndham Championship so this time he might benefit from having reacclimatised to European conditions at the Belfry, where he was eighth in the end, and there's absolutely no denying the fact that he needs results and he needs them soon.

Yes, he does have another year's exemption on the PGA Tour, but he's 117th on the Race to Dubai and that means as things stand, he won't be playing events like the Dubai Desert Classic next year. Getting into the Ryder Cup side without opportunities to impress in Europe will be extremely difficult. Doing so without major starts as well – as things stand he'd only sneak into the PGA – might just be impossible.

Wallace isn't alone in facing such a predicament but he'll be desperate to get back out to the PGA Tour for the FedExCup Fall. To justify doing that, he'll surely need to have at least locked up a European Tour card for next year and as he isn't in the Irish Open, it's this or Wentworth. I maintain that he's playing well enough, and is the right sort of character, to go and get it done.

Of course, he'd also want to be playing the final two events of the DP World Tour season, in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, where he's so comfortable. That might require a win and I'll give him a third chance to go ahead and get it.

Bernd notice

The improvements Wallace has shown with his short-game over the past few weeks are another source of encouragement but if there's one asset you need here, it's a quality wedge game. That covers so many former champions and iron play in general would tie in the shock 2019 winner, Sebastian Soderberg, along with the three who've followed. Last year, Aberg's ball-striking was so good that he didn't need to putt well.

With this in mind, it's time to return to BERND WIESBERGER , who was denied by Rasmus Hojgaard three years ago but might now gain compensation.

  • CLICK HERE to back Wiesberger with Sky Bet

In a year of overall frustration on the DP World Tour – one winner to this point isn't very good, eight runners-up is downright maddening – we were right to believe that Wiesberger would reestablish himself as one of the best players around, and he's spent much of the past few months at or close to the top of the market.

That remains the case here but with Fitzpatrick and the Hojgaard twins, plus Lawrence's effort last week and the return of his compatriot Erik van Rooyen, Wiesberger is a little further down the list despite this being an ideal test at what could just be an ideal time.

Sixth and 19th since the circuit resumed following its summer break, Wiesberger even showed a bit of something with the putter last time but that club might only need not to misbehave entirely for him to have a good chance here.

Bernd Wiesberger

Tiny, largely flat greens mean that long-range putting is quite rare and Wiesberger, a little like Tommy Fleetwood, has long been one of the most underrated chippers around. Around the green he's first in this field in 2024 and the same goes for scrambling, which is quite something when you consider how many putts he's missed.

Fifth in strokes-gained approach, third in greens, top 30 in fairways and clear first in the overall tee-to-green stats, Wiesberger is accurate, he's a fine wedge player, and he chips and pitches as well as anyone. While the course in Prague was probably too in favour of the bombers, this one is perfect.

Second place in 2021 should've been first but he stumbled with a Ryder Cup place on the line and having sounded thrilled with the state of his game when featuring on the Sky Sports broadcast two weeks ago, compensation may well be on its way.

Both Hojgaard twins appear dangerous along with van Rooyen now dropping in grade, but among a strong group of favourites it's Matteo Manassero who I found hardest to leave out. Had his price not hardened quickly after betting opened, it's likely he'd have made the staking plan, but at a best of 25s he's omitted on perceived value grounds.

Another dynamite chipper, Manassero's long-game in general has been fantastic of late. Twice in his last four DP World Tour starts he's led the field in greens hit and following 18th in the Olympics, he was sixth at the Belfry where his irons were excellent once more.

His record at Crans now features a bit of everything but it really just follows the arc of his career. When he was among the best in Europe, at an almost impossibly young age, he was a feature in the mix, and with his iron play and chipping similar to that of Wiesberger, he's the one I fear most.

Last year's headline selection was Alex Bjork at 28/1 and when you consider that Aberg won and the likes of Robert MacIntyre and Adrian Meronk were in the field, clearly this is weaker. As such, seeing him at 50s and bigger is a bit of a surprise but he's taken a month and a half off since the Open and while he's gone well after a break in Abu Dhabi and South Africa, it's a concern I can't shake.

Still, he was 12th on his only regular DP World Tour start this year before back-to-back missed cuts in Scotland which probably don't tell us much. Overall it's been a predictably tough rookie year on the PGA Tour but if he's fit and healthy then a jolt of improvement is likely, particularly having chosen Crans for his return to action.

French connection points to Rozner

Second last year and always close to the lead in this event, Bjork is a real course specialist but I'll side with another in ANTOINE ROZNER , who can hopefully feed off the strong French vibes which saw David Ravetto and Frederic Lacroix win back-to-back in August.

  • CLICK HERE to back Rozner with Sky Bet

Rozner had a massive chance himself at the Italian Open in June and was then in the mix in the Scottish Open, too. In fact he's had several opportunities this year, despite being less consistent than he'd like.

Last week's 73rd at the Belfry will put a few off but he's said before that he's not comfortable there, and yet there were some welcome positives from his short-game, which has cost him plenty of shots in 2024 and a trophy in Italy.

On his previous start, Rozner narrowly missed the cut in Prague after five weeks away, yet it was the best he'd driven the ball since this event almost two years ago. His irons, which have been strong for much of the season, remained in decent nick too.

Vive la France 🇫🇷🏆 Frederic Lacroix wins his first DP World Tour title and makes it successive French victories on Tour. #DanishGolf pic.twitter.com/mNxK8FAfmG — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) August 25, 2024

In other words if you're willing to discount one bad week at a course he really doesn't like, you then have a class act with course form figures of 13-4-24, who has led the tee-to-green stats twice in three Crans appearances, and who ranks second only to Bjork in adjusted and actual scoring among those who've also played in all three.

Rozner absolutely loves it here and while he's stuttered since the restart, his odds more than reflect that fact. Given the mitigating circumstances and this golden run for French players, 50/1 and upwards has to be taken and if he can drive it as he did in Prague, he'll have stacks of chances.

Look to Kenya for clues

The Kenya Open has been a handy guide to this for a while now, because the courses are similarly short and tight and altitude is a big factor in Nairobi. Soderberg is the embodiment of this connection but had Lorenzo Gagli won that play-off, it still would've applied – both are on the Kenya Open roll-of-honour.

Darius van Driel won there earlier this year and could be worth a look for a top-20 finish, while runner-up and subsequent Soudal hero Nacho Elvira has an excellent record here. Many will look to him for the first-round lead, while I also have half an eye on Jason Scrivener in the same market at what's a massive price and his compatriot David Micheluzzi could love this test.

My two outsiders though are MATTHIAS SCHWAB and MARCUS KINHULT .

  • CLICK HERE to back Schwab with Sky Bet

Schwab was 33rd last week after a run of four missed cuts, but each of those was by a narrow margin. Before that, he'd been 10th in Italy and 27th in Germany, both events having been played at the sort of tree-lined courses he so enjoys.

Top-10 finishes at both Muthaiga and Karen give us the Kenya connection and he in fact ranked seventh in the tee-to-green stats at the former course earlier this year, only for his putter to let him down on that occasion. He's also been third in the Barracuda on the PGA Tour, again at altitude, while in just three Korn Ferry Tour starts he's been fourth in Boise.

Thanks Switzerland for great views, a fun tournament and a good T-8 finish 🇨🇭🏔☀️👌🏻 #oem2019 pic.twitter.com/PMJSUh1VFk — Matthias Schwab (@schwab_matth) September 1, 2019

As in Kenya, Schwab's putter was again the problem at the Belfry, where he was seventh in strokes-gained approach, but he'd been putting nicely in the weeks prior to that and his short-game in general has often been a strength since he graduated college as a highly-touted prospect.

Schwab actually played well here as an amateur almost a decade ago and on his most recent visit, in 2019, was the first-round leader, sat second at halfway, and eventually finished ninth in that high-class renewal which also featured Rory McIlroy.

Yes, he's found winning a step too far but with a generally excellent record at altitude, and this being absolutely the right kind of course, I'll gladly add a second Austrian to the staking plan here in neighbouring Switzerland.

Kinhult also showed up well here as an amateur in 2015, finishing 10th, and while yet to better than he's made six cuts from six, averages 68.5, and generally looks right at home in the Alps.

  • CLICK HERE to back Kinhult with Sky Bet

He too has some strong form in Kenya, where he's yet to miss a cut, and he's returned to action with 12th in Prague and 23rd at the Belfry, two really strong performances. The first of them came at a course made for much bigger hitters, too.

Yes, he's leaned on his short-game but if he can just tidy up a little from the tee, a second DP World Tour title may well be within reach. He came agonisingly close to that as recently as June and, for the most part, his play since suggests he can strike again in the coming weeks and months.

Scheffler's actual scoring average on tour says plenty about his and Tiger's dominance

Scottie Scheffler finished the year with a 68.01 actual scoring average, the lowest in PGA Tour history

ATLANTA — Scottie Scheffler closed out his season with a 264 at East Lake, lowering his scoring average to 68.01. NBC pointed out during the telecast it was the lowest in the history of the PGA Tour.

What gets recognized is the adjusted scoring average, which accounts for how the score compared with the rest of the field. Scheffler’s adjusted average was 68.65, still the best by some margin this year which will earn him the Byron Nelson Award (the PGA of America stopped awarding the Vardon Trophy two years ago).

The record is held by Tiger Woods, who was at 67.79 in 2000 and 2007.

What makes Scheffler’s actual scoring average impressive are two factors. First, he was an average of 0.5 shots ahead of Xander Schauffele. Only two other players in the last 15 years have led the actual scoring average by a larger margin — Webb Simpson in 2020 (0.7) and Steve Stricker in 2013 (0.69).

The second is how Scheffler started the year. He went 41 consecutive rounds without a score over par, a streak that ended the day after he was arrested at the PGA Championship. Scheffler also had 28 consecutive rounds under par.

The actual scoring average also highlights the dominance of Woods in his peak years. His scoring average in 2000, the year he won nine times in 20 starts, was 68.17. That was an average of 1.18 shots better than the next player, Phil Mickelson.

Woods also had one other year when he was at least an average of one shot better than anyone else, in 2007 when he was at 69.1 and Jeff Overton was No. 2 at 70.1.

Scheffler setting the actual scoring average record should not be a surprise. Not only is he very good, scoring has been coming down in golf as long as the game has been played.

Rory's long year

Rory McIlroy decided to ramp up his pre-Masters schedule by adding the Cognizant Classic to start the Florida swing and the Texas Open the week before the Masters.

Now at the end of the year — almost for the 35-year-old from Northern Ireland — it sounds as though that might have been a mistake. Throw in the Zurich Classic with Shane Lowry (which they won) and the Olympics, and McIlroy is headed for his busiest year since 2010.

He has the Irish Open, Wentworth and the Dunhill Links (with his father). And he still has Abu Dhabi and the European tour season-ender in Dubai. That adds to 27.

McIlroy said he’s typically in the range of 22 tournaments — that’s his average over the last four years — he added that was “when I was sort of in my 20s and didn’t have the responsibilities that I do now.”

Not to be overlooked was how much the U.S. Open took out of him, when he missed a pair of short putts on the last three holes and was runner-up to Bryson DeChambeau. McIlroy skipped a signature event the next week to get his head straight.

He had only two top 10s the rest of the year, and this was the first time since 2017 that McIlroy failed to register a top 10 in the PGA Tour postseason.

McIlroy said he would try to cut back to between 18 and 20 tournaments in the future.

“It’s been a long season, and I’m going to just have to think about trying to build in a few extra breaks here and there next year and going forward because I felt like I hit a bit of a wall sort of post-U.S. Open, and still feel a little bit of that hangover.”

Aberg's knee

Jordan Spieth isn’t the only player taking time away to get healed. Ludvig Aberg is having surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee.

He won’t be out as long as Spieth, who had surgery Aug. 21 on his left wrist and is unlikely to play until 2025.

Aberg’s manager at Wasserman, Butler Melnyk, says the Swedish star has been dealing with his left knee since the spring. He said it didn’t affect his golf as much as it kept him from training with weights how he prefers.

Golf Channel was first to report Aberg will be on the mend for about a month and plans a limited golf schedule in the fall. He is No. 8 in the Race to Dubai on the European tour. Aberg was not able to defend his title in the European Masters in Switzerland this year. He also is defending champion in the RSM Classic at Sea Island in November.

The cup is not running over

Great Britain and Ireland won the Curtis Cup for the first time in eight years, meaning the American only hold one trophy — the Walker Cup — in the matches between the U.S. and opponents from across the Atlantic (GB&I or Europe).

That can change in two weeks when the Americans try to win back the Solheim Cup against Europe. And if they don’t, all eyes shift to the Sept. 6-7 matches in 2025 for the Walker Cup at Cypress Point.

The Americans at least can claim the Presidents Cup, which involves every country outside Europe. They have won nine in a row dating to a tie in 2003, with the next edition in three weeks at Royal Montreal.

Scheffler and Schauffele

Jim Furyk was on the Ryder Cup teams when Ben Crenshaw sent out Tiger Woods and David Duval as a fourballs pairing at Brookline, and when Hal Sutton put together Woods and Mickelson at Oakland Hills. Neither ended well.

Scheffler and Schauffele are the best two players in golf and became closer friends from their time at the Olympics (and being paired nine times this year at big events).

Furyk, the U.S. captain at the Presidents Cup, didn’t even wait for the question Tuesday.

“No,” he said. “I’m not playing Scottie and X together, if that’s what you’re asking.”

Furyk said both have a similar demeanor with no real weakness in their games. He hasn’t given it any thought because he sees no reason to put No. 1 and No. 2 together when they could put their games in two matches with other partners.

He also said it was not entirely certain Scheffler would be playing with Sam Burns, a captain’s pick and his closest friend on tour. They have an 0-3-1 record in two cups.

Scheffler and Burns played three matches in the Presidents Cup (0-2-1), lost the opening match of the Ryder Cup and didn’t play the rest of the week together at Marco Simone.

“Marco Simone, they were probably both struggling with parts of their game,” Furyk said. He said at the last Presidents Cup, they scored well enough to have won nearly every match except against the opponents they faced.

“I wouldn’t rule it out, but it’s definitely not a given,” Furyk said of a Scheffler-Burns partnership. “I think both of them know that, and I’d have no issue pairing them together in certain formats.”

Keegan Bradley is the only one of six captain’s picks for the U.S. that won a tournament this year. ... Scottie Scheffler stayed atop the FedEx Cup standings since winning his first tournament of 2024 at Bay Hill, a span of 25 consecutive weeks. ... Matt Fitzpatrick is the only player who started the year in the top 10 in the world ranking (No. 8) and dropped outside the top 25 (No. 27). ... Haeran Ryu became only the second player from South Korea to win on the LPGA Tour this year. The other was Amy Yang at the Women’s PGA. Neither were ranked inside the top 15 in the women’s world ranking at the start of the year.

Stat of the week

Only twice in the six years of the “starting strokes” format at the Tour Championship has the player with the lowest score won the FedEx Cup — Rory McIlroy in 2019 and 2022.

“He makes more birdies than I do and he makes less bogeys. That sort of adds up to him being a little bit better right now.” — Rory McIlroy on Scottie Scheffler.

Breakthrough DP World Tour win just the start for Denmark's Niklas Nørgaard

By Mathieu Wood

After fulfilling a lifelong ambition, Niklas Nørgaard can look ahead to realising new goals as he assesses how to capitalise on the springboard his victory at the Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo provides him.

At the age of 32, he overcame the inevitable pressure that is attached with vying for a maiden DP World Tour title to land his breakthrough triumph after a tense finish at The Belfry on Sunday.

In doing so, he climbs from 205th to a new career-high world ranking of 114th, rises to sixth on the season-long DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership with Rolex, and jumps to the top of the European Ryder Cup Rankings for next year’s event at Bethpage.

With his win, in his 81st DP World Tour appearance, N ø rgaard also gains an immeasurable amount of belief in what else he can go on to achieve.

“Since I was ten years old, when I started playing golf, it [the DP World Tour] is what I have always been watching on TV," he told the DP World Tour.

“I have had such a slow career, but always becoming a little better every year. I have not won on the Challenge Tour, not won anything here, and then to win this tournament is quite special.”

Niklas Norgaard-2169758090

As he alludes to, silverware on the DP World Tour has been worth the wait.

Having turned professional in late 2015, he won the order of merit on the Nordic Golf League in 2019 to earn promotion to the Challenge Tour, from which he earned promotion to the DP World Tour in 2021.

Quite simply, winning is hard.

“I had to call my mental coach this morning,” added N ø rgaard.

“When you hold a four-shot lead, it feels like you have to protect something, and I didn’t want to do that. I wanted to play for something, really.”

Nerveless throughout his brilliant eight-under-par 64 on Saturday to earn a four-shot lead, N ø rgaard had to did deep down the stretch in the final round.

With a four-shot lead with four holes to play, he looked set to realise a lifelong dream without any undue stress. Far from it, though.

After finding the greenside rough in two at the par five 15th, N ø rgaard hit three poor chips in a row, before eventually carding a seven to cut his lead in half.

A nine-foot par putt at the 16th helped him stay two ahead, moments after playing partner Lawrence missed a good birdie chance.

"I was nervous, but not that nervous. That was purely just chipping badly," said N ø rgaard of his seven at the 15th.

What have we just seen?! 🫣 Niklas Nørgaard makes a double-bogey and now leads by just two. #BetfredBritishMasters pic.twitter.com/bApNV0q88B — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) September 1, 2024

N ø rgaard then showed his resolve to get up and down from a greenside bunker at the par-five 17th for a birdie to retain his two-shot advantage as he was matched by closest pursuer Lawrence.

Then came what he describes as his best shot of the day. A trademark bullet drive onto the fairway at the 18th – the hardest hole all week.

“Getting that shot onto the fairway and then putting it onto the green was a big relief,” he added.

A week on from the Danish Golf Championship, where two Danes finished in the top five, N ø rgaard becomes Denmark’s newest champion on the DP World Tour.

It is also a landmark 50th win by a Danish player on the DP World Tour.

By lifting the trophy, N ø rgaard becomes the 13th player to win their maiden DP World Tour title this season, and the second Dane to win on the 2024 Race to Dubai after Thorbjørn Olesen at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship in January.

In a sign of the togetherness among golfers from Denmark, N ø rgaard was met by a host of his countrymen and fellow DP World Tour winners, including eight-time winner Olesen and third-placed Rasmus Højgaard, as he was showered with champagne.

A week on from saying Danish golf was in "dreamworld" , Thomas Bjørn can only have helped allow himself a smile as Nørgaard emulated him and Olesen as a winner of the historic British Masters.

While Danish golf has become the envy of many countries in world golf over the past decade, with its depth of talent, Nørgaard is their first first-time winner in almost three years, when Jeff Winther won the Mallorca Golf Open towards the end of the 2021 season.

With his victory, Nørgaard becomes the 13th player - and third in succession - to win their maiden DP World Tour title this season,

More notable, however, is the fact he has made the dream start to the Ryder Cup qualification process for next year's contest when Europe will target victory on U.S. soil for the first time since the 'Miracle at Medinah' in 2012..

Is being on Luke Donald's team an ambition of his?

"100%, someday, he replied. "This is a pretty good start. But my goal from the beginning of the season was just to get to the final in the Dubai (the DP World Tour Championship).

"Goals can move and adapt. But of course it (making the European Ryder Cup team) would mean the world. But one step at a time, we have just started it [the process], so we will see."

After climbing 30 spots on the DP World Tour rankings with his win, he can get ahead and book his flights to the UAE, with a debut appearance in the season climax at the Earth Course in November on the horizon.

Norgaard

With 10 events left in the season, he is now also the holder of a PGA TOUR card for 2025.

And in a sign that only highlights the emotional toll that must come with winning an elusive title, he has opted not to play at the Omega European Masters this week.

Instead, we are next set to see Nørgaard tee it up again in the Amgen Irish Open, prior to the BMW PGA Championship - the upcoming Rolex Series event - at Wentworth Club.

"Just getting over the line is such a big thing to prove to yourself," he said. "I proved that to myself today (Sunday) with my caddie (Kasper Broch Estrup) that we can do it.

"There is a huge difference between being number two and winning. It is something I would hope for everyone to try, because it is a really cool feeling."
