Panch Kedar – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here is the list of Panch Kedar opening & closing dates 2023 (Tentative)*-

Panch means five & Kedar means Shiva. Panch Kedar is a very important circuit for Shaiva followers. This circuit contains five spiritual Shiva Dham which are - Kedarnath, Kalpeshwar, Madhmaeshwar, Rudranath & Tungnath.

According to legends - After the great Mahabharat battle Pandavas felt guilty for the massacre, and to get free from the sins they needed Shiva blessings. But Shiva was not willing to give redemption for their bad work. And to hide from the Pandavas, Shiva transformed himself into a Bull and dive to the ground. But Bhima recognized the bull as none other than Shiva then he caught the bull with his tail and hind legs. The bull vanishes into the ground and reappears at five different places- Hump in the Kedarnath, two forelegs in the Tungnath, Nevil & stomach in the Madhy-Maheshwar, face at Rudranath and hair-lock in Kalpeshwar. Together these five places are called Panch Kedar.

In Uttarakhand, there are a total of five Kedar which is known as Panch Kedar. Panch Kedar contains five Shiva Temples which are at the remote locations of Uttarakhand. These five temples are Kedarnath , Kalpeshwar, Madhmaeshwar, Rudranath & Tungnath

Like others' spiritual circuits Panch Kedar also follows a fixed sequence that starts from Kedarnath, then Madhmaheswar, then Tungnath, Rudranath, and last Kalpnath/Kalpeshwar.

No, Kedarnath & Tungnath are two different Shiva temples which are the parts of Panch Kedar. Kedarnath is the place where Shiva is worshiped in the form of a bull whereas Tungnath is the place where the devotees worship the fore-legs of Shiva.

No. Tungnath Temple is based in the high snowfall region which makes the temple inaccessible for the devotees. That’s why Tungnath temple opens only for 6 months and closes in winters for the next six months.

Kedarnath Dham is a more than the 1000 year old temple based on the bank of Mandakini river which was recreated by Adi Shankaracharya in 8 AD.

Tungnath Temple is the world's highest-altitude Shiva Temple. It is located near Chopta in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, at an elevation of 3,680 meters (approx 13000 ft.) above sea level and is considered to be more than 1,000 years old.

To reach Tungnath Temple, you have to first come to Haridwar/Rishikesh from there you can take any taxi or shared vehicle till Ukhimath or Chopta . Chopta is the place from where the trek starts. The trek is 3.5 km long which goes through beautiful landscapes. The trek is not very difficult but it needs physical fitness.

May to October is the best time to do Panch Kedar Yatra. This is the time when the weather remains pleasant which would be good for trekking, but it is advised to avoid yatra during monsoon season.

he trekking distance for Panch Kedar's Temples is given as follows - 1. Kedarnath Temple has a 16 km trek, which starts from the Gaurikund. 2. Tungnath Temple’s Trek is just 3.5 km long, which starts from Chopta. 3. To reach Rudranath there are three different routes but the approx trek distance is more than 20 km. 4. Madhy-Maheswar Temple trek is approx 14-16 km long, which starts from the Ransi Village. 5. To reach Kalpeshwar the road is motorable till Helang Urgam road. From there you have to trek less than a km to reach Kalpeshwar Mahadev Temple.

Rudranath Temple’s trek is the toughest in all five Panch Kedar.

In winter, when the temple is inaccessible due to snowfall and rainfall at that time the idols of these temples are brought down to their winter’s seats. In winters the symbolic idol of Kedarnath Temple is brought to Omkareshwar Temple at Ukhimath, idol of Tungnath brought to Mokhumath, the symbolic idol of Rudranath moved to Gopeshwar, Madhy-Maheswar idol brought to the Ukhimath. Only the Kalpeshwar Temple is open throughout the year.

Panch Kedar Yatra is a pilgrimage tour that takes you to five holy shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, known as the Panch Kedar. These five temples are located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India, and are considered to be some of the most important pilgrimage destinations for devotees of Lord Shiva.

The five temples of Panch Kedar are:

Kedarnath Tungnath Rudranath Madhyamaheshwar Kalpeshwar

Panch Kedar Yatra is of great importance for Hindu pilgrims. It is believed that by visiting the five sacred temples of Panch Kedar, one can attain moksha or liberation from the cycle of birth and death. According to Hindu mythology, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's blessings after the Kurukshetra war, and Lord Shiva, in his guise, hid himself in different parts of the Himalayas.

The Panch Kedar temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva and are located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India. The five temples are Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar. These temples are not easily accessible and require a trek to reach them. The trek itself is considered a spiritual experience as it involves walking through picturesque mountains, lush green forests, and crossing gushing rivers.

Each temple has its unique history and significance. Kedarnath is the most famous of the five temples and is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a lingam. Tungnath is the highest Shiva temple in the world and is also one of the Panch Kedar. Rudranath is known for the face of Lord Shiva appearing on a rock. Madhyamaheshwar is believed to be the place where the navel of Lord Shiva appeared. Kalpeshwar is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva meditated and granted wishes to his devotees.

Overall, the Panch Kedar Yatra is a journey of self-discovery, faith, and devotion for the Hindu pilgrims who undertake it.

The Rich History Of The Panch Kedar

Home Image

The history of the Panch Kedar dates back to the time of the Mahabharata, one of the most famous Hindu epics. According to legend, after the great war of Mahabharata, the Pandavas went in search of Lord Shiva to seek his blessings and forgiveness for the sins they had committed during the war.

Lord Shiva, however, was angry with the Pandavas and did not want to bless them. To avoid them, he took the form of a bull and went into hiding in the Himalayas. The Pandavas, determined to seek his blessings, followed him into the mountains and finally caught up with him at GuptKashi.

Lord Shiva, pleased with their devotion, revealed himself to them and forgave them for their sins. He then disappeared into the ground, leaving behind his hump, which is worshipped at the Kedarnath temple .

However, the Pandavas were not satisfied with just finding Lord Shiva. They wanted to build a temple to honor him and seek his blessings. Lord Shiva appeared before them again, this time in the form of a buffalo, and asked them to build five different temples in his honor.

The Pandavas followed his instructions and built the five temples at five different locations, which are now collectively known as the Panch Kedar . These five temples are Kedarnath , Tungnath , Rudranath , Madhyamaheshwar , and Kalpeshwar .

Each of these temples has a unique history and significance. Kedarnath is the most famous and important of the five temples and is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva took refuge in the form of a bull. Tungnath is the highest temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to be the place where his arms appeared. Rudranath is the temple where Lord Shiva's face appeared, and Madhyamaheshwar is the temple where his navel appeared. Kalpeshwar is the temple where Lord Shiva's hair is believed to have appeared.

The Panch Kedar temples are not only important for their historical and religious significance but also their stunning natural beauty. They are located in some of the most beautiful and remote parts of the Himalayas and offer breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys.

Spiritual Significance of Panch Kedar Trek:

Legend has it that after the battle of Kurukshetra , the Pandavas sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to absolve themselves of the sins committed during the war. Lord Shiva, however, eluded them by transforming into a bull and disappearing into the ground. The parts of his body reappeared at the Panch Kedar sites, bestowing divinity upon them.

Kedarnath - Panch Kedar Trek

Madmaheshwar

Tungnath - Panch Kedar Trek

At an elevation of 3,583 meters, the initial stop in the Panch Kedar pilgrimage is Kedarnath, housing the symbolic hump of the bull, representing Lord Shiva’s divine presence. The second site, Madmaheshwar, situated at 3,490 meters, marks the appearance of Shiva as the navel. Tungnath, at 3,680 meters, is the third destination where the arms of Lord Shiva are believed to have manifested.

Moving on, Rudranath, positioned at 2,286 meters, serves as the fourth Kedar, venerating the fierce countenance (Mukh/Face) of Lord Shiva. Finally, Kalpeshwar, the fifth and last kedar at an altitude of 2,286 meters, is where Shiva’s matted hair is revered. This sacred journey echoes the locations where the Pandavas encountered Lord Shiva, prompting the construction of these temples in his honour.

Panch Kedar Trek Opening Date 2024

The Panch Kedar Trek is accessible only for six months annually, except for Kalpeshwar. Typically, the trek is operational from May to November. For the year 2024, the tentative opening dates for the Panch Kedar Trek are as follows:

The Best time to visit Panch Kedar Trek

The best time to visit Panch Kedar in Uttarakhand is during the summer months (May to June) and the early autumn months (September to October). During these periods, the weather is relatively mild, and the trekking routes to the Panch Kedar temples are accessible. Here’s a breakdown of the best times to visit:

summer Season

Summer (May to June)

Summer is considered an ideal time for the Panch Kedar Yatra. The weather is pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F). The snow has melted, making the trekking routes clearer and more manageable.

Post Mansoon

Early Autumn (August to October)

Another favourable time for the pilgrimage is early autumn. The weather is cool and comfortable, with daytime temperatures ranging from 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F). The post-monsoon period ensures that the landscapes are lush and green.

During these periods, the Panch Kedar temples are open, and devotees can undertake the pilgrimage with relative ease. It’s essential to avoid the monsoon season (July to August) due to heavy rainfall, which can lead to landslides and make the trekking routes unsafe. Additionally, winter (from November to April) brings heavy snowfall, leading to the closure of the temples and making the region inhospitable for trekking.

Accommodations and Facilities:

Basic accommodation facilities such as guesthouses and ashrams are available along the trekking route. Pilgrims are advised to carry essentials like sleeping bags, warm clothing, and a basic first aid kit. Medical facilities are limited, emphasizing the importance of preparation. Here are some Accommodation Facilities at Panch Kedar Treks:

Camping

In conclusion, the Panch Kedar Trek is a transformative journey that transcends the physical realm. It is an exploration of one’s inner self amidst the grandeur of the Himalayas, offering a profound spiritual experience and a sense of oneness with the divine. For those seeking adventure, devotion, and a rendezvous with the majestic Himalayas, the Panch Kedar Trek is an odyssey like no other.

Ans: You can reach Kedarnath from Gaurikund by trekking. The temple is situated 16 km from Gaurikund. You can trek otherwise you can hire a pony/palki or a Pithu.

Ans: It depends on several factors including the time availability and their physical endurance. The Yatra requires a trek of 16 km. Most of the devotees who do not have much time or cannot trek for 16 km, travel by helicopter. It saves a lot of time and you can complete the Yatra in 1 day. However, if someone chooses to trek then it requires 2-3 days for Yatra. A helicopter is a good option for those who are short of time.

Ans: You will get the basic accommodation at Kedarnath. It is advisable to book accommodation in advance as there are fewer chances of getting a good place to stay at the last moment during the peak season. However, Indian Holiday can assist you to make the reservation in hotels like Punjab Sindh Awas, Gayatri Bhawan, and New Himachal House.

Ans: You can stay at Kedarnath overnight, however, it all depends on the month of travel. If you are traveling in the months of April, May, and June, then you can stay at Kedarnath at night. Since the temple is located at a high altitude so the temperature will get low especially at night, hence it is not advisable to stay overnight at Kedarnath for the old persons or for those who are suffering from a health condition. If you can get Helicopter tickets, then it is advisable to return the same day after darshan.

Ans: It requires a minimum of 3 days to visit Kedarnath Temple. However, it depends on the mode of travel you will choose to visit Kedarnath Temple. If you are planning to visit the temple by helicopter then it can be possible in one day only whereas if you are going to trek or hire a pony/palki then you require 3 days to visit the temple.

Ans: No, the Kedarnath Temple is not open throughout the year. The opening and closing days change every year. The opening and closing dates are decided by the priests. Generally, the opening date of the temple depends on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya whereas the temple closes on Bhai Dooj just after Diwali. The idol of Kedarnath shifts to Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath from Kedarnath Temple in winters.

  • From Sirsi to Kedarnath helicopter ride is of 7-minutes
  • From Phata to Kedarnath is of 9-minutes
  • From Guptkashi to Kedarnath it takes around 15-minutes.

Ans: Here are some of the famous sightseeing places near Kedarnath. If you are planning a trip to Kedarnath, then you must visit these beautiful places like Gaurikund, Triyuginarayan Temple, Bhairav Temple, Shankaracharya Samadhi, Vasuki Tal, Gandhi Sarovar etc.

Ans: Room heaters will not be provided in the hotels of Kedarnath. Because there is no electricity. They will only provide blankets.

Ans: Generally, an oxygen cylinder is not required for a Kedarnath trip. However, it is recommended to carry an oxygen cylinder to the elderly or those who are having breathing problems. Kedarnath is situated in the high altitude region and has poor oxygen conditions. Although, you can easily borrow an oxygen cylinder from Haridwar/Dehradun.

Ans: Kedarnath trek is not difficult and a normal person can complete the trek in 7 hours. However, it is advisable to build stamina by running and walking every day before embarking on the holy sojourn.

Ans: Yes, there are few Dharamshalas and government-owned camps near the temple in which you can stay. It is advisable to book the accommodation in advance as it is difficult to get one on the spot.

Ans: The helicopter tickets for Kedarnath can be booked by two modes – online and offline. Pilgrims can book the online ticket from the Char Dham official website. They can book offline tickets from the counters on the helipad. However, it is advisable to book the ticket in advance as the chances of getting the ticket on the spot are fewer. The allotment of the helicopter seat is subject to availability.

Ans: Kedarnath is situated at a high altitude due to which the air is thin. If someone is having asthma, then that person can face breathing problems in Kedarnath. It is recommended to carry an oxygen cylinder as a precautionary measure.

Ans: No, a parking facility is not available near Kedarnath Temple. Also, vehicles are not allowed till the temple. They are only allowed till Gaurikund, after that pilgrims have to trek or they can hire a palki/pony.

Ans: No, there is no age restriction for Kedarnath Yatra. However, children below 5 years and elderly people above 65 years shouldn't travel as the temple is situated at a high altitude and the region experiences cold weather.

Ans: There are a few things that every pilgrim must carry during the Kedarnath trip. Here is the list of important which you should pack for Yatra:
