6 Best Cologne Rhine River Cruise And Boat Tours

Updated on  September 12, 2023

Are you overwhelmed by all the choices for experiencing the beauty of Cologne's stunning Rhine River? Don't worry, I've been there too and did a lot of research to find out exactly what makes for an exceptional river cruise or boat tour.

In this blog post, I'll share my top options like the Panoramic City Cruise and Top Sights Rhine River Cruise . I'll also share what to consider and what to steer clear of during your river experience, and make the most of your trip!

Our Top 3 Picks: Top Cologne River Cruise and Boat Tours

#1 TOP PICK

Top Sights Rhine River Cruise

  • 1.5 hr "Greatest Hits" of Cologne
  • Informative audio commentary

Panoramic City Cruise

  • 1 hr Iconic Landmarks
  • On-board Bar

Evening Cruise on the Rhine River

  • 2 hr Evening Lights
  • Live DJ music

Top Cologne River Cruise and Boat Tours

1. top sights rhine river cruise.

I've written about the The Top Sights Rhine River Cruise before, and it's by far my favorite.

You get views of the "greatest hits" of Cologne, including the famous Cologne Cathedral, Old Town, and Rheinauhafen's unique crane houses. The staff are incredibly friendly and hospitable, despite how hectic such cruises can get. And I liked the pace - not too fast and not too slow.

As with most of the options on this list, the tour includes audio commentary of the sights in English and German for those who want to learn more. But frankly, some parts can be inaudible especially when there are noisy people around.

During our 1.5-hour experience, we ordered Kölsch beer (a local specialty) and a slice of cake to soak in the sights with!

It's the little details that make this cruise a little more special, and that's why I've ranked it as number one. It's an excellent choice for first-time visitors or seasoned travelers looking to see Cologne from another angle!

  • Gain valuable insights into Cologne's famous sights and history with on - board commentary
  • Indulge in delicious beverages and treats while taking in the stunning views
  • Explore top sights including the iconic Cologne Cathedral, Old Town, crane houses, and 5 Rhine river bridges
  • Cruise along the scenic Rhine River for 1.5 hours
  • Enjoy an informative audio commentary in English and German
  • Limited seating availability on the cruise
  • Potential for crowded conditions during peak tourist season
  • May not be suitable for individuals who are prone to motion sickness

2. Panoramic City Cruise

Coming in close second is this Panoramic City Cruise . What makes it different from my top choice is mainly the shorter length of the cruise (1 hour seems to go by too fast) but you're still able to catch some of the best parts of the Rhine River panorama! So if you're in a time fix, pick this!

From gliding over the Rhine River to capturing breathtaking views of iconic landmarks such as the Cologne Cathedral, it makes for a memorable experience. It's also priced slightly lower, and who doesn't enjoy a saving a little!

One aspect that particularly impressed me was how efficiently organized everything was. The boat crew were very professional, and safety was highly emphasized throughout.

The onboard bar also added a comforting touch, letting you enjoy drinks while taking in stunning views of bridges like South Bridge among others. Although I visited solo on this trip, parents will be glad to know infants up to 3 years old enjoy free entry. Moreover, it's wheelchair-accessible.

It is why we placed it at No. 2 position; it has impressive value, the "Wow" factor and very professional crew!

  • Capture stunning photos of iconic bridges and landmarks along the river
  • Audio commentary via loudspeaker in German and English
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance
  • Wheelchair accessible
  • Infants under 3 years old can join for free
  • Dogs are allowed (with additional ticket purchase)
  • Limited seating capacity may result in crowded conditions on the boat
  • May not be suitable for those with motion sickness or a fear of water
  • The onboard bar selection and prices may be limited or expensive

3. 2-Hour Evening Cruise on the Rhine River

If you thought coasting down the Rhine River is a beautiful experience in the day, just wait until you do it in the evening! There's nothing quite like seeing the beautiful city of Cologne illuminated under the evening lights, while gliding smoothly along one of Europe's most historic rivers.

The panoramic views are simply breathtaking, offering sights such as romanesque churches including St. Kunibert and Groß St. Martin, and especially, the massive Cologne Cathedral.

However, the highlight had to be the music. We kicked off the cruise with gentle, calming tunes to help us relax. As the night sky grew darker, the crew switched to lively dance tracks that got everyone pumped and in high spirits. Even the kids were grooving along!

There's ample seating on the cruise, whether it's sitting comfortably below deck or lounging on the spacious open deck (where you can feel the fresh air and wind whipping around you!).

But this cruise is quite popular, with limited evening slots! So when you're planning your next trip to the city of Cologne consider reserving now & you still have the option to pay later.

  • Experience the beauty of Cologne city lit up by enchanting evening lights
  • Enjoy live DJ music for an fun-filled cruise experience
  • See stunning views of majestic churches, bridges, and historic areas of the city
  • On-board food and drinks available for purchase
  • Trusted activity provider with a high rating based on thousands of reviews
  • No commentary about the sights: this might disappoint those who want to know what they're seeing.
  • Depending on the popularity of the cruise, it can get crowded with other tourists, potentially affecting the overall enjoyment of the experience.
  • May not be suitable for those who just want a low-key, relaxing boat ride.

4. Cologne to Königswinter: Siebengebirge Cruise

Taking a cruise to Königswinter from Cologne allows you to kill two birds with one stone.

Not only can you explore the delightful town of Königswinter with its historic castle and natural beauty, but you'll also get to enjoy stunning Rhine River views along the way, gliding past Bonn and the legendary Drachenfels mountain. [ 1 ]

The one-way trip is 4 hours, while the two-way trip takes around 9.5-10 hours and includes about 2 hours in Königswinter.

If you ask me, I reckon you choose the one-way trip, spend more time exploring  Königswinter, and take the train back to Cologne at your leisure.

For animal lovers like me, taking my dog along for a tiny add-on fee made this trip even more special but be sure to get those tickets from the office or directly on board!

  • Experience the beauty of the Siebengebirge from the comfort of a boat cruise
  • Capture stunning views of the legendary Drachenfels and its castle ruins
  • Varied tour options: Choose between the one-way 4-hour cruise or two-way 10-hour cruise, depending on availability.
  • Purchase food and drinks onboard.
  • Pet-friendly experience: Bring your furry friend along by purchasing tickets for dogs onboard.
  • Some guests complain that the two-way option only allows 2 hours in the town, which may not be enough
  • Limited availability of seating on the boat
  • Potential for overcrowding during peak tourist seasons
  • Weather conditions may impact the overall experience

5. Rhine River Cruise with Live Music

If you're into good old tunes, the Rhine River Cruise with Live Music is a real treat. The musician onboard did a great job playing some German favorites, which I think are perfect for the older crowd (compared to the energetic music played at the 2-hour evening cruise).

The live music here gave our trip up and down the Rhine River a nostalgic vibe while we took in the sights from Groß St. Martin Church to Rheinau harbour and finally, the iconic Cologne Cathedral. And sipping on a refreshing glass of Kölsch was the cherry on top.

But be prepared to book in advance, because the tour is quite popular especially during peak travel season. Luckily, there's a free cancellation policy up-to 24 hours before departure!

Honestly, I'd highly recommend this as a great deal and the reviews from the locals say the same. You get a unique view of Cologne's beautiful city while enjoying live music. It's a fantastic experience for your money.

  • Explore the beauty of Cologne while listening to live music performances
  • Convenient meeting point at pier no. 10 near Musical Dome and Goldgasse
  • Decent food and drink options available on board, but don't have high expectations beyong the basic
  • Limited music genres available (only in German)
  • Crowded boat with limited seating
  • Higher price compared to other Rhine River cruises without live music

This Rhine River Cruise with Live Music is an ideal experience for someone who wants to explore the historic and beautiful scenery of Europe's largest river while enjoying live musical performances.

6. Winter Cruise with Live Music (Christmas)

Exploring Christmas in Cologne is truly special, and the Winter Cruise with Live Music is hands down the best way to savor the festive magic!

The boat's cozy decorations and the comforting warmth, especially when it's freezing outside, have a magical way of instantly putting you in the Christmas spirit.

Imagine cruising along the Rhine River as you take in the beautiful sights of Cologne's winter skyline, illuminated by twinkling holiday lights... while a live singer performs Christmas carols in German and English. You'll wish they had this all year round.

To complete the experience, you can order a jug of Glühwein (warm mulled wine) to go with your cruise. And here's the bonus: it wasn't overcrowded at all, so there was plenty of space to enjoy the experience.

I would highly recommend choosing the 4 pm option. This way, you get to witness Cologne's stunning views in the daylight, catch a beautiful sunset, and then bask in the mesmerizing night lights as the trip comes to an end. It was way better than I expected, considering the reasonable price we paid.

  • See Cologne's winter skyline from the comfort of a boat
  • Get in the Christmas spirit with a cup of Glühwein, a traditional holiday drink
  • Sing along to live music performances
  • Top-notch staff
  • Skip the ticket line
  • Onboard food and drink options available
  • Limited slots as it's only available during winter
  • Potential for cold and windy weather during the cruise
  • Not suitable for those who do not enjoy Christmas music or festivities

Your professional, English-speaking crew will welcome you on board, show you to your cabin and help you familiarise yourself with all aspects of this first-class floating boutique hotel before dinner is served.

Route map

After breakfast, disembark for a guided walking tour of this most majestic of cities, Cologne.

The cathedral’s famous spires tower above the old town’s maze of cobbled streets, where our expert guide will bring the city’s fascinating history to life. Explore the vibrant old town, beautifully restored and boasting an abundance of excellent shopping and cosy bars, some of which still brew their own beer. See the cathedral, the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe, miraculous survivor of Second World War bombing and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It took six centuries to complete this iconic masterpiece and among its many treasures are the magnificent stained-glass windows and gilded sarcophagus said to contain the remains of the three kings from the Nativity story.

After some free time, return to the ship to enjoy lunch and relax on board as our journey truly begins.

Cruise towards Andernach

As we leave Cologne’s imposing skyline behind head up onto the sun deck to enjoy fabulous river views during an afternoon of scenic sailing. Sink into a good book in a comfortable lounge chair, cool off in the splash pool or relax on the terrace area with a refreshing drink. Freshen up in your elegant cabin before reconvening with your fellow cruisers in the bar for an aperitif. During tonight’s dinner we arrive in Andernach.

Included experience:

Guided tour of Cologne.

Cologne, Germany

ANDERNACH & BOPPARD

One of the oldest towns in Germany, Andernach was founded by the Romans in 12BC on the site of an old Celtic settlement then seized by the Franks in 450 AD who set up a royal court within its old fort walls. By medieval times, the town had grown in stature and was trading with places as far away as England and Scandinavia – even having its own mint and coinage. Andernach and the surrounding area is well known for its pumice with production booming since the 1950s. Enjoy a guided walking tour around its picturesque streets and admire the town’s mighty defensive walls, gates and towers, the finest of which is the 56-metre tall Round Tower. See the impressive, ruined castle with its well-preserved keep, and the majestic cathedral with its four soaring towers, fine interior and unusual wall decorations. At the old harbour area discover the Old Crane, a 16th-century stone-turning tower crane, still in use until 1911 to load millstones, tuff and wine.

Back on board for lunch, take in the glorious river scenery as we set sail for Boppard. Later, discover this hidden gem, set against a backdrop of rolling forested slopes and vineyards.  Also known as the ‘Pearl of the Rhine’, this famously picturesque town is located on a long, looping bend of the river. The black and white spires of the Church of Saint Severus can be seen from a distance, but as we draw closer its bustling quayside comes into view.

Captivating, cobbled streets, lined by half-timbered houses, tucked-away shops selling traditional goods and characterful restaurants, lead into the town and its main square. Like many riverside settlements in the area, the Romans founded Boppard, and their legacy remains in the superbly preserved town walls, the finest in Germany. There’s time to explore or promenade along the river, gazing at views of the vineyard-covered hillsides. Or you can simply pass time on board in anticipation of more fine dining in the ship’s restaurant this evening.

After dinner enjoy professional musicians from leading symphony orchestras demonstrating perfect mastery of their instruments, showcasing melodies from the most famous European composers with a special focus on Beethoven, who was born in Bonn - a splendid finale to this memorable holiday.

Our ship remains moored overnight and after dinner there’s the chance to enjoy a special onboard performance by professional musicians from leading symphony orchestras. They will showcase melodies from the most famous European composers, with a particular focus on Beethoven, who was born in Bonn.

Included experiences:

Guided tour of Andernach, visit to Boppard & classic duo musical performance.

Market square - Andernach, Germany

RHINE GORGE & RÜDESHEIM

Rhine Gorge & Rudesheim

There’s a bucket-list treat in store this morning as we cruise through the world-famous Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and area of outstanding natural beauty. As the river twists and turns, encased by sheer valley sides 600 feet high, make sure you’re up on deck to experience these incredible views close up. Ruins of ancient castles teeter on the valley slopes, built by wealthy princes eager to display their power and influence and to extort tolls from passing river traffic. Legends abound here, most famously of the Lorelei - murmuring rock – where enchanting maidens lured unsuspecting sailors to watery graves. Look out for birds of prey floating above as we cruise on passing quaint villages – Saint Goar, Bacharach and Kaub – all famed for their wine production.

Later, arrive in Rüdesheim for a guided walking tour. A tangle of crooked houses, winding cobbled alleys and curious little shops, this pretty town is famous for its wine making. Set amongst vineyard-clad slopes, Riesling is the region’s speciality grape, and you’ll find a wealth of Weinstuben where you can sample the locally produced wines. A delightful marketplace lined with pastel facades and cosy taverns lies at Rüdesheim’s heart, overlooked by Brömserburg Castle. As you wander the maze of streets, don’t miss the impressive Klunkhardshof, one of the town’s finest 15th-century homes with its traditional timber frame and gabled roof.

After dinner back on board, reconvene in the bar for a digestif or perhaps a coffee with a shot of locally produced Asbach brandy. We remain moored in Rüdesheim overnight.

MILTENBERG & WERTHEIM

This morning we arrive in Miltenberg, a beautifully preserved medieval village with a labyrinth of winding alleys and lanes to explore. With our local guide, discover the impressive gatehouse, standing as a proud guardian of the village and the charming marketplace, lined by traditional fachwerk buildings, with their characterful timber frames. Legend has it that the locals were allowed free wood from the surrounding forests, hence the abundance of this architectural style. Admire the square’s trickling fountain, ornately carved from stone and complete with dancing cherubs, and the intricately detailed Gasthaus Zum Riesen, claiming to be Germany’s oldest tavern.

Later as we drift away, we’ll pass under Miltenberg’s red-brick bridge as our Captain skillfully navigates the gentle meandering bends of the Main. This afternoon we’ll arrive in Wertheim, a delightful surprise, off the tourist trail and all the better for its unspoilt ambience. Founded in the 10th century as the centre of the kingdom known as Franconia, the Marienberg Fortress overlooks neat rows of grand, pastel-coloured buildings punctuated by the spires and domes of the city’s many churches. The jewel in Würzburg’s illustrious crown is the Residenz, a magnificent Baroque palace that whisks you back to a more romantic age. Originally conceived to rival the Palace of Versailles in scale, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and features one of Germany’s most ornate staircases and dozens of interconnecting rooms adorned with frescoes, priceless tapestries, sculptures and paintings. We moor in Würzburg overnight so there’s plenty of time to explore under your own steam too.

After dinner it is time to shake a leg! Highly skilled artists will cater for an hour of party mood and present musical highlights from the past and present.

This morning, experience something a bit different as we take a drive along the Romantic Road – aptly named to describe this route through some of the most spellbinding scenery in the world. Our journey takes us through a folkloric landscape, threaded by a procession of medieval towns, lofty castles and grand palaces. As you soak up the cinematic views, we’ll arrive at the glorious town of Rothenburg, crowning a hill with sensational views over the meandering river below. Our ship awaits a short drive away in Ochsenfurt and after lunch, spend the afternoon enjoying a guided tour. Wander through the old town, pausing to admire the town hall’s impressive mechanical clock and 13th-century church with its vibrant interior. We return to the ship for dinner where another superb menu awaits and set sail towards Bamberg.

Historic town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria, Germany

Enjoy a morning of scenic sailing, taking a spot in the lounge or up on deck as a kaleidoscope of glorious vistas slip past.

This afternoon we moor in Bamberg, undoubtedly one of Europe’s prettiest small towns and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Planned by Emperor Heinrich II in the 11th century as a Franconian capital, it sits on seven lush green hills, reminiscent of Rome – a city whose grandeur it endeavoured to equal. Discover its history and architectural highlights on our informative tour led by a local guide, taking in the exquisite old town and exceptional multi-spired cathedral. Perhaps the most intriguing landmark is Bamberg’s town hall, which sits on an island in the middle of the burbling river, flanked by bridges on either side. From here you can also see ‘Little Venice’ – a picturesque cluster of fishermen’s houses built along the waterfront, mostly dating from the Middle Ages.

This evening promises another highlight, with a magnificent dinner hosted by the Captain, followed by a performance of traditional Bavarian music on board. Leaving Bamberg, we join the Main-Danube canal as we cruise to our final stop, historic Nuremberg.

Old town hall above the river Regnitz in the historic old town of Bamberg

Enjoy a relaxing final morning of cruising as we glide towards the Bavarian city of Nuremberg. Intriguing for its association with the Second World War, as the site of many pre-war Nazi rallies and later, the war crimes trials. What is less known however is that this historic city captivates visitors by its cobbled streets with classic half-timbered houses, an enchanting castle – rebuilt after the war – plus a plethora of historic landmarks. These include the Church of Saint Lawrence, a stunning example of Gothic architecture, and the intricate Church of Our Lady with its working mechanical clock dating from 1506. It overlooks the bustling Hauptmarkt, an elegant square renowned for its intricate fountain resembling a Gothic church tower. Discover all these and more on our insightful city tour before there’s some time to explore at your own pace. Amid all this splendour, spare a moment to taste some of Nuremberg’s prized gingerbread or take some home as a delicious souvenir.

Castle Reichenstein in the Middle Rhine Valley, Germany

BOPPARD & ANDERNACH

This morning there’s a little more time to explore Boppard, a true hidden gem, set against a backdrop of rolling forested slopes and vineyards.

Late morning we set sail once more and during lunch arrive in Andernach. One of the oldest towns in Germany and founded by the Romans in 12BC on the site of an old Celtic settlement, Andernach was then seized by the Franks in 450 AD who set up a royal court within its old fort walls.

Tonight enjoy the Chef’s Dinner, when the chef prepares his superb ‘signature’ dishes for you to enjoy in the splendid surroundings of the ship’s restaurant, with a chance to reflect on the fascinating places you have discovered, poignant stories you have heard and the new friends you have made. Our ship moors in Andernach overnight so after dinner there’s the chance to hop ashore once more for a nightcap in one of the cosy tucked away wine cellars.

Return to the ship for dinner,  and afterwards enjoy professional musicians from leading symphony orchestras demonstrating perfect mastery of their instruments, showcasing melodies from the most famous European composers with a special focus on Beethoven, who was born in Bonn - a splendid finale to this memorable holiday.

COLOGNE RIVER CRUISES & BOAT TOURS – FINAL THOUGHTS

A Cologne river cruise is a fantastic way to explore the city and its most famous landmarks in a relaxed and enjoyable way.

By taking a leisurely cruise along the Rhine River, travelers can enjoy stunning views of Cologne’s iconic sights, including Cologne Cathedral, the Old Town, and the Hohenzollern Bridge.

While a river cruise may offer importants facts and figures about the city’s sights and picturesque views of the city’s landmarks, it’s important to note that the cruise only covers the areas along the river. It should therefore not be considered a substitute for a sightseeing walking tour.

A walking tour allows visitors to explore Cologne’s hidden gems, learn about its history and culture, and interact with the local community in a more meaningful way.

Therefore, a combination of a river cruise and a walking tour is the ideal way to experience all that Cologne has to offer.

It’s best to check the details of the specific tour or package you’re interested in to find out the exact duration of the Rhine River Cruise.

There are several places where river cruises can dock in Cologne. Some of the most common docking points in Cologne for river cruises include the Cologne Old Town, the Rheinauhafen, the Cologne Cruise Terminal (located at the northern end of the Old Town), and the Deutzer Bridge area. The specific dock location for each cruise may vary depending on factors such as water levels, port availability, and cruise schedule. If you have a specific river cruise in mind, it’s best to check with the cruise company or your travel agent to confirm the exact docking location.

The length of the Rhine River is approximately 1,230 km (760 miles). The time it takes to travel the Rhine River depends on several factors such as the mode of transportation, the starting and ending points, and the purpose of the journey. If you have a specific journey in mind, it’s best to check with the transport company or your travel agent to get a more accurate estimate of the time it will take to travel the Rhine River.

The Rhine River has many scenic parts, but one of the most famous and picturesque sections is the Rhine Gorge. This area of the river is known for its steep hills, vineyards, medieval castles, and charming towns and villages. The Rhine Gorge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most beautiful river valleys in Europe. Some of the highlights of this section of the river include the Lorelei Rock, a narrow and steep cliff rising over the water, and the many castles and fortresses that were built along the river to protect the trade routes.

The best site on a Rhine River Cruise can depend on personal preference, but there are some general guidelines to keep in mind. If you’re interested in scenic views of the river and the landscape, it’s recommended to choose a seat on the upper deck or the sun deck. These areas often provide unobstructed views of the passing scenery and the various landmarks along the way. If you’re looking for a more peaceful and quiet experience, seats located towards the rear of the ship may be a good choice, as they are further away from the engine noise and vibrations. On the other hand, if you prefer to be closer to the ship’s amenities and facilities, seats located towards the middle or front of the ship may be more convenient. Ultimately, the best site on a Rhine River Cruise depends on your personal preferences and what you hope to get out of the experience.

Moselle Discovery 2024

Moselschleife Bremm

Highlights of the River Cruise on Rhine and Moselle

On a-rosa alea.

From Cologne to Cochem, Trier-Mehring, Bernkastel-Kues and Koblenz to Cologne.

The Moselle has really worked its magic on the landscape here. In primeval times the river found the most beautiful route through the Rhenish Massif, a route full of graceful curves. It then made the hillsides and forests so fertile that it feels like you’re gliding through Tolkien’s legendary Shire. Lush vineyards between cliffs and picturesque villages benefit from a perfect climate. Sunny and mild, it provides ideal conditions for the region’s 2,000-year-old wine tradition. This tradition created a Riesling that is now found in the world’s top restaurants. And in the blossoming villages that seem to belong to another era, the people are equally sunny and cheerful. Everyone takes their time, with the result that visitors also get a wonderful sense of life slowing down a little.

A-ROSA Sena in Köln

There are many things to see in Cologne, and they are all overshadowed by the cathedral. At 144.5 metres long and 157.38 metres high, this is the third-highest church building in the world. The view over Cologne, the Rhine and the surrounding areas makes climbing the south tower’s 533 steps well worth the effort. The basilica of Great St Martin Church is another fantastic sight. The brightly coloured houses of Cologne’s fish market seem to glow in front of it. Located away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, you can soak up the atmosphere of the old town here. During carnival season, locals sing ‘Das Herz der Welt, das schlägt am Rhein’ (‘The heart of the world beats on the Rhine’) – and when you get to know the people of Cologne, you’ll no doubt agree with this sentiment.

Flusskreuzfahrten Trier

The city can lay claim to the title of Germany’s oldest city, and it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Romans left a lasting mark on Trier, with historical buildings from that era still shaping the city’s appearance today: the amphitheatre, the Römerbrücke bridge, the Igeler Säule (Igel column), the Barbarathermen and Kaiserthermen baths, the Konstantinbasilika (Basilica of Constantine) and – of course – the city’s most famous symbol, the Porta Nigra. The name of this impressive former city gate is believed to be a reference to its weathered sandstone.

Rhein-Kreuzfahrten nach Koblenz

Discover Koblenz during your Rhine cruise. Its history dates back over 2,000 years, making it one of Germany’s oldest cities – and one of its most picturesque, with a wealth of sights and cultural attractions. Marvel at Koblenz’s palaces, stately homes, grand townhouses, narrow lanes and romantic corners. And watch as our A-ROSA ship sails close to the famous Deutsches Eck headland.

€ 150 SUPER EARLY BOOKING DISCOUNT 2024

The A-ROSA Super Early Booking Discount is valid for bookings made until 30 June 2024. Limited availabilities. The discount is already included in the travel price.

The best way is to arrive the day before your cruise departs, so that you can relax – or simply extend your stay in Cologne after the cruise has ended.

2nd Day Cochem Arr 09:00 am Dep 05:00 pm

Cochem, on the bank of the Moselle, is another port of call on your Rhine cruise, which will take you onto the Moselle. The entire Moselle region around Cochem is a real sight to behold. The town’s landmark is undoubtedly the famous Reichsburg, a splendid castle that towers above the river. But did you know that the West German government had a secret bunker built here for its federal bank? Strange, but true! And you’ll have the opportunity to visit it during your river cruise.

Flussreise nach Cochem

The spectacular scenery, the romantic vineyards and the passing Moselle invite you to a cosy wine tasting in Cochem. The Haxel Winery welcomes you with a young and dynamic wine estate. 4th Day Bernkastel-Kues Arr 06:00 am Dep 10:00 pm

Experience the unforgettable atmosphere of a picturesque old town full of history and culture, as your Rhine cruise takes you along the Moselle. Weinregion Mosel mit A-ROSA erleben

Join us for a private wine tasting in the heart of the Moselle region. The Moselle region is Germany's oldest wine region and is home to the steepest vineyard in the world. After a short drive to a Roman wine press in Brauneberg, you will be welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine. During a tour of the cellar, you will learn the basics about the most important grape variety on the Moselle, Riesling, from the winegrower himself. Of course, a first-class tasting of the wines is a must. Savour the delicately fruity, delicate Riesling wines from the region and talk shop with the winegrower about the terroir, steep slopes and the new challenges of wine growing.

Weinregion Mosel mit A-ROSA erleben

Bernkastel-Kues has been blessed twice: once with fertile vineyards and once by perhaps the most unique ensemble of medieval half-timbered buildings. Especially famous for the Spitzhäuschen, which has been balancing on a foundation that appears to be much too narrow since the beginning of the 15th century. It is a true wonder that it has not fallen over yet! The Renaissance city hall, built in 1608, and the Michaela fountain in the market square are just as remarkable as the parish church of St. Michael with its more than 600-year-old tower.

€ 25 per person

Weinberge im Moseltal

During the panoramic ride up the Moselle mountains and through idyllic Moselle villages, you will see mainly green and blue. The colours of the vineyards, the water and the sky are omnipresent. Rikscha Ausflug

The breath-taking cable car ride across the Rhine and up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress should not be missed: Behind you the roofs of Koblenz, below you the broad river and in front of you the gigantic fortress Ehrenbreitstein. This adjective is by no means an exaggeration, as you will be entering the second largest preserved fortress in Europe. Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III ordered the construction as part of an anti-French military line. Up to 6,500 craftsmen and day labourers were employed. The mighty fortress rises 118 metres above the Rhine and was once the core of the fortification around Koblenz. Together with the Deutsches Eck (German Corner), it forms the northern gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Afterwards we will walk through the old town back to the ship.

The 10 best places to go on a river cruise in Europe

Jun 7, 2024 • 8 min read

Cruising down a quiet, traffic-free river, surrounded by scenic riverfront views is an ideal way to see Europe . You can sip your wine while watching picture-perfect scenery breeze past – taking in castles, medieval villages and fields of flowers.

By necessity, European riverboats are small and passenger numbers are often fewer than 200, making these cruises a far more social and intimate experience. There’s also plenty to do and see onshore, and with more frequent stops you can enjoy more onshore activities. Cruise lines are now also offering more immersive learning experiences such as cooking classes and home visits, or activities like bicycle trips and long hikes.

The hardest part is choosing where to go — which is why we've rounded up the 10 best places to go on a European river cruise. (Once you've chosen your cruise, check out our definitive cruise packing guide .)

River cruise boats float down a village-lined river in Germany.

1. Northern Rhine (Germany)

From gorgeous river meanders and noble German cities

The northern section of the Rhine features dramatic landscapes and a host of interesting towns. Cologne (Köln), Germany ’s fourth-largest city, offers numerous attractions starting with its famous cathedral, while Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, is a park- and flower-filled delight. Heading south, the Rhine meanders between hillside castles and steep fields of wine-producing grapes. Idyllic villages appear around each bend, their half-timbered houses and Gothic steeples seemingly plucked from a fairy tale. Scarcely damaged during WWII, handsome Speyer is crowned by a magnificent Romanesque cathedral.

2. Southern Rhine (France, Germany & Switzerland)

Explore intriguing towns in this border land

The Southern Rhine forms the border between Germany and France before becoming Switzerland ’s northern frontier. Strasbourg is the perfect overture to all that is idiosyncratic about Alsace – walking a fine tightrope between France and Germany, between a medieval past and a progressive future. Further south, the Black Forest spills into Alsace in the German town of Breisach. Unsurprisingly, given its geographical and cultural proximity to France, the locals here have a passion for a good bottle of wine. Basel, at the juncture of the French, German and Swiss borders, is perhaps where Switzerland’s Franco-Germanic roots are most evident.

3. Rhône (France)

Indulge in gourmet experiences cruising the south of France

Commanding a strategic spot at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône Rivers, grand old Lyon is France’s gastronomic capital. Downstream, the Rhône forges past Vienne’s Roman ruins and the centuries-old Côtes du Rhône vineyards, opening to sunny vistas of fruit orchards, lavender fields and the distant Alps as it continues south. During the 14th century, the Provençal town of Avignon was the center of the Roman Catholic world. Its impressive legacy of ecclesiastical architecture most notably includes the soaring, World Heritage-listed Palais des Papes .

Sunset's golden light signs on the Italianite city of Passau and the Danube river.

4. Western Danube (Austria & Germany)

Romantic landscapes in the heart of Europe

The baroque streetscapes and imperial palaces set the stage for Vienna ’s artistic and musical masterpieces alongside its coffee-house culture and vibrant epicurean and design scenes. Moving into Germany, the Danube gently winds its way to the Italianate city of Passau . Top billing in eastern Bavaria goes to Regensburg, a former capital and one of Germany’s prettiest and liveliest cities. Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Bavaria’s second-largest city and the unofficial capital of Franconia, is an energetic place with a history that ranges from undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire to the trials that judged Nazi war crimes.

5. Eastern Danube (Hungary & Serbia)

Travel a cross-section of Europe’s less-touristed east

The two great cities of this stretch of the Danube are the capitals of Hungary and Serbia respectively. Budapest has something for everyone – from dramatic history and flamboyant architecture to healing thermal waters. Outspoken, adventurous, proud and audacious: Belgrade ("White City") has a gritty exuberance and eclectic architecture making it one of Europe’s most happening cities today. While it hurtles towards a brighter future, its past unfolds before your eyes: socialist blocks are squeezed between art nouveau masterpieces and remnants of the Habsburg legacy contrast with Ottoman relics.

Lush green vineyards line the banks of the Duoro.

6. Douro (Portugal)

See spectacular terraced vineyards, the home of port wine

The Douro region, home to port wine, is simply one of the most glorious spots on earth. The Douro Valley showcases steep terraced vineyards carved into mountains, granite bluffs, whitewashed quintas (estates) and 18th-century wine cellars that draw visitors from around the world. Humble-yet-opulent Porto entices with its higgledy-piggledy medieval center, divine food and wine, and charismatic locals. Its charms are as subtle as the nuances of an aged tawny port, best savored slowly.

7. Elbe (Czech Republic & Germany)

A little-cruised but picturesque stretch of Central Europe

Covering the Czech Republic and a thick slice of eastern Germany, Elbe cruises are under-the-radar options. Prague , not on the Elbe but usually included on river cruises, contends with cities like Budapest and Paris in terms of beauty. Its maze of cobbled lanes and hidden courtyards is perfect for the aimless wanderer. The classic view of Dresden from the Elbe’s northern bank takes in spires, towers and domes belonging to palaces, churches and stately buildings: hard to believe that the city was all but wiped off the map by Allied bombings in 1945. While the city of Wittenberg is first and foremost about Martin Luther, the monk who triggered the German Reformation in 1517.

The pedestrian Pont des Arts crosses the River Seine, linking the Palais du Louvre (shown) and the Institut de France

8. Seine (France)

Cruise out of Paris through northern France

Paris has a timeless familiarity, with instantly recognizable architectural icons, memorable cuisine and chic boutiques. Dining is a quintessential part of the Parisian experience, and its art repository is one of the best, showcasing priceless treasures in palatial museums. Don't miss Rouen is one of Normandy’s most engaging and historically rich destinations, with its soaring Gothic cathedral, beautifully restored medieval quarter, excellent museums and vibrant cultural life. At the mouth of the Seine, Le Havre is a love letter to modernism, evoking France’s postwar energy and optimism.

9. Main (Germany)

A seductive German river connecting to the Rhine and Danube

Rising in Franconia and joining the Rhine near Mainz, the Main (pronounced "mine") is the longest German-only river. From Bamberg to its confluence, it travels some 400km through locks and picturesque scenery, dotted with historic towns. Frankfurt ’s skyscrapers are quite a contrast to the picturesque towns that follow, though it too has a rather traditional and charming old town. Scenic Würzburg is renowned for its art, architecture and delicate wines. A disarmingly beautiful architectural masterpiece, Bamberg’s entire Altstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A river flows through lush farmland in Germany.

10. Moselle (Germany)

An intimate stretch of the wine-producing German region

Having traversed France and Luxembourg , the Moselle heads through Germany to meet its destiny with the Rhine at Koblenz. It’s a very pretty stretch of river flanked by vineyards, and makes for great leisurely cruising and exploration. With an astounding nine UNESCO World Heritage sites, gorgeous Trier shelters Germany’s finest ensemble of Roman monuments, and is enlivened by a characterful medieval center and large student population. Bernkastel-Kues are lovely twin settlements in the heart of wine country, while Cochem’s castle and pretty buildings make it a visual highlight of the Moselle .

How do I choose a route for a European river cruise?

The two major rivers for European cruises are the Rhine and the Danube. Together, they were once the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. Rhine cruises often run from Amsterdam to Basel, following the course of the river through Germany. Danube cruises start in southern Germany, wend their way through Bratislava, Slovakia; Linz and Vienna, Austria; and Belgrade, Serbia; then skirt the Bulgarian and Romanian border to reach the Black Sea.

While many first-time European river cruisers stick to these two rivers, there are many other options available. In Western Europe, you can cruise through the French countryside on the Rhône and Seine, or check out the vineyards of Portugal on the Douro.

Even on the same river, distinct routes can be offered. One company might zip up the Rhine, allowing you to see the highlights in a few days; another might take longer, exploring smaller places along the way and offering more time for onshore experiences. You'll need to decide whether you’d like to get a look at more destinations, or more of a feel for fewer places.

When is the best time to go on a European river cruise?

Cruises on European rivers tend to begin in the spring, around March, and go through to October. Some cruises, operating in areas where Christmas markets are a feature, run right through December but inclement weather or river flooding could put a dampener on plans. Winter cruises tend to focus on places where Christmas experiences are on offer. Shorter daylight hours mean you’ll see less scenery, but the charm of the festive season has its own appeal.

Choosing your season is very much a matter of personal preference, and there are pros and cons for each season. Summer cruises offer the most spectacular scenery, the longest daylight hours and the best weather, but the towns you visit will be far busier and you won’t be alone in port; in some smaller places, you may have to scramble across the decks of other boats to reach the shore.

Spring and autumn mean less time around the pool on the top deck, but quieter times ashore. Expect rains in spring, but also blooming flowers. Autumn is a great time to cruise the Douro, with grapes being picked and clement temperatures.

By Train to Day-Trip Boat Cruises on the Rhine River from Frankfurt and Airport

Day trips and boat pleasure cruises on the Rhine River (Rhein) and Loreley Valley are easy from Frankfurt am Main Hauptbahnhof and Airport (FRA) in Germany — use the train to Rüdesheim or Koblenz.

KD Goethe Steamer

Regular day pleasure boat cruises on the Rhine River (Rhein) rarely depart from Frankfurt am Main itself but are easily arranged. Fast trains from the Hauptbahnhof and Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) allow even passengers with a few hour stopovers to enjoy cruising Germany’s most famous river and see popular sights including castles and the Loreley Rock. It is a short train ride from Frankfurt’s main station or directly from the airport to Rhine towns including Rüdesheim, Bingen, and Koblenz, which are all ideal departure ports for Rhine River valley day pleasure cruises. Organized day-trip tours including bus transportation are available in the high season while boats cruise on the Main River for one-hour panorama cruises almost daily.

Day Cruise Trips on the Rhine River from Frankfurt am Main

Although day pleasure cruise boats depart from many cities and towns between Mainz and Cologne, the most popular part of the Rhine River for day cruises is the Loreley Valley with boats departing from Rüdesheim or Bingen to St Goar and St Goarhausen. This part of the Rhine River valley is inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. Here the valley is the steepest and narrowest, often covered by vineyards, and sporting a castle or castle ruin every two kilometers or so.

Rüdesheim is one of the best departure ports for pleasure cruises on the Rhine. Rüdesheim sees many departures by numerous cruise lines including the largest (KD Köln-Düsseldorfer) and many smaller (and sometimes slightly cheaper) boat operators. Rüdesheim also has excellent train connections to Frankfurt with the Rüdesheim (Rhein) train station very close to the boat landing, as is the case in most Rhine villages — see train timetable to Rüdesheim at Deutsche Bahn.

See also Day Trip Rhine and Main River Cruise Boats from Frankfurt for pleasure boat excursions on the Main and Rhine, although the train to Rüdesheim is generally a better choice than the boat to see the best parts of the Rhine.

By Train from Frankfurt am Main and Airport to the Rhine River

Pfalzgrafenstein Castle

Frankfurt am Main is Germany’s transportation hub. Not only is Frankfurt International Airport by far the busiest in Germany but the Hauptbahnhof is also the most important railway hub in Germany.

Numerous routings are available from Frankfurt to the Rhine Valley but it is best to stick to direct trains – missed connections, and German regional trains, unfortunately, do not always run like clockwork, which can mean long delays in boring stations.

Regional Express (RE) or Regional Bahn (RB) trains run from Frankfurt Main Station on either side of the Rhine and again meet up at Koblenz at the confluence of the Mosel and the Rhine. Trains on the right bank run mostly once per hour while the faster trains on the left bank run every two hours. RB and RE trains are local trains on which many discount tickets such as the Hessenticket or even the RMV Day Ticket may be accepted.

Trains on the Right Bank of the Rhine River in Germany

Traveling times from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to major stops along the Rhine where connections are available with Rhine day excursion boats are:

  • Frankfurt-Höchst – 10 minutes
  • Mainz-Kastel – 25 minutes
  • Wiesbaden – 35 minutes
  • Eltville – 53 minutes
  • Rüdesheim (Rhein) – 1h12
  • Lorch – 1h22
  • Kaub – 1h29
  • St Goarhausen – 1h39 (Loreley Rock)
  • Kamp Bornhofen – 1h50
  • Braubach – 2h00 (Marksburg)
  • Koblenz – 2h15
  • Neuwied – 2h33

Passengers from Frankfurt International Airport may save time by taking the S-Bahn train S9 to Wiesbaden and change there or at Mainz-Kastel to the RE trains rather than going to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof first. From the airport to Rüdesheim takes around 90 minutes.

See German Railways (Deutsche Bahn) timetables: Frankfurt to Rüdesheim / Frankfurt Airport to Rüdesheim

The trains on the right bank of the Rhine are operated by VIAS and may have VIA in the train name. However, for most travelers, the differences with regular DB German Railways trains are hard to spot and the same tickets and deals are accepted.

The journey through the Rhine Valley is the most scenic but if returning from Koblenz to Frankfurt via Limburg an der Lahn , consider a longer stop-over to see this most beautiful old town center and fantastic Romanesque cathedral. (Avoid the ICE train station Limburg-Süd, in contrast to Limburg Bahnhof , this station is far from the town center.)

Trains on the Left Bank of the Rhine River in Germany

Trains from Frankfurt am Main to the left bank of the Rhine River are less frequent but somewhat faster than on the right bank.

Traveling times from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to major stops on the left bank of the Main and Rhine Rivers on the Regional Express (RE) trains are around:

  • Frankfurt Airport – 15 minutes
  • Mainz Hauptbahnhof – 42 minutes
  • Bingen – 1h05
  • Bacharach – 1h12
  • Oberwesel – 1h18
  • Boppard – 1h30
  • Koblenz – 1h45

See German Railways (Deutsche Bahn) timetables: Frankfurt to Koblenz / Frankfurt Airport to Koblenz

Further slower Regional Bahn (RB) trains operate on the left bank but generally start from Mainz. S-Bahn trains S8 have further connections from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof and International Airport to Mainz. RB trains also stop in popular tourist towns including Bacharach, St Goar, and Boppard.

Note that the fastest trains between Koblenz and Frankfurt usually stop only in Mainz and at Frankfurt International Airport and not in the smaller Rhine villages.

More Rhine River Cruise Options in Germany

See also Loreley Valley Rhine River Day Cruises for more information on the variety of Rhine River short and single day cruises available on the Middle Rhine and Top Rhine River Day Trip Cruise Lines for a selection of the top day pleasure cruise lines operating in the Loreley Valley. Regional Express, Regional Bahn, and S-Bahn trains running along the Main and Rhine are local trains for which Deutsche Bahn has several special discount tickets .

The KD Rhine Pass savings deal has not been on sale in recent years but Get Your Guide offers easy booking (and often sensible cancelation options) for day-trip cruises on the Rhine departing from many popular cities such as Cologne , Düsseldorf , Bonn , Koblenz , Boppard , Ruedesheim , Cochem , and Frankfurt . Most cruise lines now also accept online ticket purchases but several still prefer to sell tickets directly at the quay or on board cruise boats.

Scots lads head on party boat down Cologne's Rhine river with tiny baby on board

T he Scots took no notice of a weather warning in Cologne as they headed off on a party boat down the Rhine river with a tiny baby on board. Chris ‘Gibbo’ Gibson , 48, organised the incredible trip for him and over 100 members of the North East Tartan Army group on Tuesday.

Despite a storm warning the booze cruise went ahead as the gang congregated at Cosa Nostra in the afternoon for some pre-party refreshments. They then marched down to the port with a bagpiper leading the way in a sea of colour and noise.

Speaking to the Record before boarding, Chris said: "It's been a stressful day so far but we just can't wait for it now. The first thing we heard when we woke up was that a weather warning had been put out.

"I got onto the company straight and made sure it was still able to sail and thankfully they said yes. All the lads have been messaging me too wondering what was happening but we've made it.

"It's a shame about the weather but it's just one of those things We did this in London for the last Euros too and the weather was worse than this so we're used to it.

"My biggest worry was making sure we had enough alcohol. It was difficult to organise how much beer we needed.

"I was ordering kegs and when I said how much we wanted they said that is 10x what they normally have... so I told them to just stick to bottles. If the Marienplatz ran out of beer in Munich what chance did we stand!"

Join the Daily Record's WhatsApp community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages.

Chris joked: "We were happy being filmed going on the boat but not coming off! It has been great fun as always with all the singing and bagpipes and beers."

Thankfully, despite the warning for heavy rain and thunder and lightning, the weather stayed decent enough for the group of 130 Scots. It was grey but dry when they boarded the boat at 2pm, and the worst of the rain didn't arrive until after the party was wrapped up three hours later.

Among those heading onto the ferry was 11-month-old youngster Loui Whyte waiting patiently in his pram for his first ever boat trip.

His mum Clayre Riach, a 41-year-old social worker from Peterhead laughed as she said: "Who would take an 11-month-old baby to the Euros?! It's been a bit different to our normal trips away. It was a theme park yesterday and boat party today.

"This is actually his first ever boat trip but he's been great. Everyone has been so friendly and Loui has really enjoyed the attention."

Chris, from Peterhead founded the North East Tartan Army group in 2016 and even created specially modified Scotland Lederhosen for the lads ahead of their Euro trip.

Speaking ahead of the Switzerland match on Wednesday, Tartan Army chief Chris added: "The whole trip has been amazing.

"I bought a one way ticket so I'm going home when Scotland go home. Hopefully we'll be out for a bit of a while.

"It's been a great experience. The Scotland fan in me wants to believe we can get a result tomorrow but it could go either way.

"If we get beat but we play our best I won't mind. We just need a better performance than Friday."
