The Best Things to Do in Downtown Northville

Story by max white.

Downtown Northville is in western Wayne County and is located about 30 minutes from Downtown Detroit and Detroit Metro Airport, making it a great place to take a morning or afternoon trip when visiting the suburbs.

The restaurant has dozens of restaurants and shops to visit while you’re spending the day in Northville , and here are some of our favorites.

Where to Eat

Located in the heart of historic Northville on Main St., the building that Table 5 is in dates back to the 1860s and was the home of several previous restaurants.

The restaurant is closed on Mondays and offers a variety of food including a cheese and olive plate as a starter, a mix of fish and meat for entrees, a deep list of wine and cocktails, and even dessert cocktails.

You can try the Parmenter’s Bread Pudding for dessert or the homemade pumpkin pie.

The Early Bird

The Early Bird is a classic diner serving up breakfast, lunch and brunch to customers. They have breakfast specialties, skillets, griddle items, omelets and more.

For lunch, there are different sandwiches, salads, soups and the daily specials change every day to include different drinks, breakfasts and lunches.

Lucy & The Wolf

Lucy & The Wolf takes the famous Spanish Tapas and gives them an American twist. The menu features big plates, small plates and starters, so everyone at the table can share.

Give the buttermilk biscuits and honey a chance as a starter, and then share the mini meatloaf, roasted oyster mushrooms, grilled heirloom carrots and more. Finish it off with chicken or if you want, the 32-ounce cowboy-style porterhouse steak.

Finally, they offer French press coffee service, hot apple crumble or mini donuts for dessert.

North Center Brewing Company

Michigan has no shortage of great breweries – just check out the Detroit Brew Trail – and one in Northville offers great beer and delicious food.

The brewery has more than a dozen beers with varying ABVs, ranging from IPAs to stouts, a Kolsch, porters, sours and more.

For food, they offer salads, burgers, sandwiches and limited specials that change each week.

Garage Grill and Fuel Bar

Step back in time at Garage Grill & Fuel Bar. It’s located in a fully restored gas station from the 1940s that was later a car dealership and garden shop.

They offer brunch and dinner to go along with a full bar. For brunch, try the house-baked cinnamon rolls to start, maybe even the breakfast pizza or the breakfast garagewich.

Dinner entrees include a roasted half-chicken, different pizzas, the pork belly tacos, Gulf shrimp risotto and more.

A classic Italian restaurant in Downtown Northville, Tirami Su plays on the Italian dessert name and serves up great food.

They have a mix of salads, pastas, entrees and more.

Browndog Barlor and Restaurant

There aren’t many restaurants like Browndog. They use local ingredients and have brunch and dinner to go with giant boozy shakes, a mix of beer, craft cocktails and even hot cocktails for the winter.

Their menu includes burgers, mac & cheese, vegan and vegetarian options and more.

The boozy shakes include the Plastered Pony (Unicorn Swirl Faygo ice cream, black raspberry liqueur, vanilla vodka, whipped cream, unicorn sprinkles), the Drunken Muppet (Kookie For Cookies ice cream, chocolate vodka, dark chocolate liquor, house made whipped cream, & cookie pieces) and more.

Finally, you can get some ice cream from the shop to eat there or to-go, and some of it even contains alcohol.

Where to Shop

Rebecca’s Michigan Store

If you’re looking for Made in Michigan products, Michigan-themed gifts or anything about the Mitten State, Rebecca’s is perfect for you.

The store screams Michigan and also gives you the option to build your own gift box or gift basket if you’re handing it off to someone else.

A unique boutique in Northville, Blackbird by Dear Prudence offers a ton of different gifts depending on what they get in the shop.

Depending on the holiday, there are home gifts, gifts for friends, glasses, tumblers, clothing and more.

Nest to Nest

If you’re looking to try a thrift or consignment shop, Nest to Nest is a great place in Northville.

The store has gifts for all parts of the home, and depending on the season, they have things for the outdoors as well.

Mod Market is an inclusive artisan market that has items from talented artists and helps support employment and training for people with special needs.

Depending on what the artists are working on, you can get different paintings, bath bombs, soaps, mugs, books, bags and much more.

Pear-Aphernailia

A play on the work paraphernalia, the store offers home furnishing, accents and gifts, and is owned by a mother-daughter team of Peggy & Jean.

The 10 Most Fun Things to Do in Downtown Northville, Michigan [in 2024]

A clock in the center of Northville Town Square in downtown Northville, MI.

Take it from someone who lives in Michigan and frequently visits this spot: this is the best list to use when looking for the most fun things to do in downtown Northville! Northville is a city nearby Plymouth-- which also has an incredible downtown -- in a region Michiganders often refer to as "metro Detroit ". The city of Northville has a dense, affluent downtown packed with a horse-racing track, top-tier restaurants-- many of which offer outdoor dining and a full bar, charming local businesses, and talented street performers. It's a notable social district in the metro Detroit region. As of April 2023, much of the streets in downtown Northville are closed off to cars, which is absolutely wonderful for pedestrians who love to walk. You can freely walk the streets without some annoying car beeping at you. For the best things to do in downtown Northville, I got you covered right here. Let's explore the 10 best things to do in downtown Northville, MI in further detail:

01 // Bet on some horses and dine at Northville Downs

02 // check out a really beautiful and cool starbucks, 03 // hang out in northville town square, 04 // dine at many of northville's top-of-the-line restaurants, 05 // taste wine by the glass at simply wine, 06 // buy your beloved pet some swag at celebrity pets, 07 // play the most midwestern game in the streets.

  • 08 // Tea lovers, rejoice! Check out Tea-Gather and Spice & Tea Merchants

09 // Explore the historic district (a.k.a the Mill Race Historical Village)

10 // take a stroll through maybury state park, why is downtown northville closed, where is tunes on tuesday downtown northville, is northville a good area, what is northville famous for, is northville expensive to live, is northville in the metro detroit area.

  • Is Northville a part of Oakland county?

For 2024, here are the 10 most fun things to do in downtown Northville, MI...

Northville Downs is a top-tier attraction in downtown Northville.

Located on the edge of downtown Northville is Northville Downs -- an establishment centered around horsetrack racing. Northville Downs is one of only two horse raceways in the entire state so visiting Northville Downs is one of the most unique things someone exploring Michigan can do! In 2023, racing resumed on April 7. Gambling is a fixture of being a spectator of horse racing. If you want to immerse yourself in the full experience but don't want to spend a lot of money, you're in luck! You can drop as little as $2.00 for most wagers on which horse will win. Betting typically is done at a window but online wagering is now available to Michigan residents! The indoor restaurant, Trotside, is one of the many incredible restaurants in downtown Northville (more on dining in Northville in a bit!). The restaurant serves dishes you'd expect to find in an upscale bar, such as burgers, salads, and fish. On Saturday, Trotside hosts an all-you-can-eat buffet. Trotside seats well over 200 people and provides a stellar view of the racetrack. Plus, once you reserve the table, it's yours for the entire evening. One final thing I feel compelled to mention... the parking lot here is frickin' huge ! One thing I must give downtown Northville credit for is its wide availability of parking. Address: 301 S Center St, Northville, MI 48167 Hours: 12:00 p.m - 12:00 a.m

The exterior of the Starbucks in downtown Northville is covered in stone.

As one of the most recognizable brands in the world, it's not necessary I spend any time convincing you that Starbucks is pretty dang good. But wait-- one thing you may not know-- if you are enrolled with Delta Skymiles, dining at Starbucks now gives you points towards your next flight ! Whereas most Starbucks are housed in typical commercial buildings, the Starbucks in Northville is next-level on aesthetic. The exterior walls are made of stone. There is some mild gardening around the establishment too adding some extra flair to the restaurant's appearance. Inside, there are two levels-- something I also don't see at many Starbucks! If you're "too cool" for Starbucks and want to support a local establishment, then I totally recommend checking out Red Dot . It's a terrific café with far more indoor seating for people wanting to do their work while they have their coffee. Address: 302 E Main St, Northville, MI 48167 Hours: M-S 5:30 a.m - 9:00 p.m, Su 6:00 a.m - 8:00 p.m

A giant open picture frame in downtown Northville from The Northville Gallery for visitors to step in for a photo opportunity.

At the heart of downtown Northville off Main Street is the eclectic Northville Town Square. Street musicians often will set up in this part of town and delight folks with stellar covers of well-known hits and some even play original music. As seen in my image for this recommendation, there is a large open photo frame for people to step in and take a fun photo. I'm not sure how long this will be up so you might want to head here as quick as possible! If you need to sit and still want to relax outside, Northville Town Square has several tables with chairs-- with free wifi-- for you and your friends/family. You can also sit all around the beautiful fountain. Northville Town Square isn't so much as a thing to do as much as it is a place to take in the charming small town vibes, people-watch, and have fun conversations with others. This spot has great energy-- enough to engage and hold your interest without being too loud nor overwhelming. Address: Near the intersection of W Main St & Center St Hours: 24/7

Koji-- a stellar sushi restaurant-- in downtown Northville.

As mentioned earlier when talking about the restaurant inside Northville Downs, there is no way to fully appreciate downtown Northville without going to a restaurant. Nearly all of the restaurants in this small downtown as some of the best eats in the state of Michigan. Most of downtown Northville's best restaurants are located in the "social district"-- which is essentially anything neighboring Town Square. Several of the restaurants in the warmer months offer glamarous outdoor seating. The seats will usually be in a tent or a covered patio area so you can block off sun exposure. That being said, the city council of Northville wanted people to keep visiting during the colder months, and thus, created an initiative called "Heat in the Street". This gives customers covered spaces to eat and drink which are equipped with electric overhead heaters and lighting. Some of my personal favorites & recommendations: Koji -- a marvelous sushi restaurant, Tirami Su (Italian), and Genitti's Hole-in-the-wall (also Italian). The delicious food of this western Wayne county city will motivate you to keep coming back! I know it sure gives me reason to!

The entrance to Simply Wine.

Did you just have an amazing meal at one of downtown Northville's amazing restaurants but it's too late to grab a coffee at Starbucks or Red Dot? Instead, sample some wine (and take home a bottle) at Simply Wine ! When you enter this classy store and spot a bottle of wine you may like, there is a possibility you can try the wine in an either 4 oz or 8 oz glass. If you're on a budget, no worries-- the store has an extensive "$20-and-under" section of quality wines. The store has a truly impressive selection of wine and the staff are all exceptionally friendly. Wine communities (in my limited experience) can be really pretentious and snooty. There is none of that attitude here. If you aspire to be or are a wine connoisseur, you should join one of their two wine clubs ! Address: 109 N Center St, Northville, MI 48167 Hours: M-Th 11:00 a.m - 7:00 p.m, F-S 11:00 a.m - 8:00 p.m, Su 12:00 p.m - 5:00 p.m

The entrance to Celebrity Pets.

My parents own a havanese and have shopped here several times! They've purchased some cute sweaters, coats, and toys for their beloved puppy from the nice folks at Celebrity Pets Co . The store caters primarily to dogs and cats. The store owners take pride in the products they sell, including but not limited to high quality pet food, treats, leashes, collars, apparel, and toys. As a bonus recommendation for downtown Northville, dog owners can also take their cherished canine to Cady Street Dog Park (though I feel I should mention there are fees)! Address: 124 N Center St, Northville, MI 48167 Hours: M-Th 10:00 a.m - 7:00 p.m, F 10:00 a.m - 6:00 p.m, S 10:00 p.m - 5:00 p.m, Su closed

A setup for the game Cornhole on a street in downtown Northville.

Stationed off Center Street is a setup for a game I've only seen people in the midwest play. The name of the game is... cornhole. I'm not making this up. It's a very simple game with an easy objective to throw sacks into the slanted hole on the opposing player or team's side. You can play the game for free on the street here. That's... about all I have to say on this one! I don't play it much but, hey, if you see me walking around downtown and want to challenge me to a game of cornhole, I'd be down!

08 // Tea lovers, rejoice! Check out Tea Gather and Spice & Tea Merchants

Standing on the balcony of Tea Gather.

Located right next to my favorite restaurant in downtown, Koji, is a cute little tea shop with the most clever name: Tea Gather ! Ever have avocado milk? Or papaya milk?? You can see what those taste like at Tea Gather! Tea Gather sells milk teas, bubble teas, traditional, and assorted teas. It's a great place to grab a fun drink while exploring downtown! Another business I want to give a shout-out too is Spice & Tea Merchants . Whereas Tea Gather is a shop you grab a drink to go, Spice & Tea Merchants is a place you can buy tea and tea accessories to take home. They have an excellent selection of loose leaf teas. Address: 135 E Cady St, Northville, MI 48167 (Tea-Gather), 134 Main Street, Northville, MI 48167 (Spice & Tea Merchants) Hours: 11:00 a.m - 10:00 p.m except W-- 2:00 p.m - 10:00 p.m (Tea-Gather), M-S 10:00 a.m - 6:00 p.m, Su 12:00 p.m - 5:00 p.m (Spice & Tea Merchants)

A setup for the game Cornhole on a street in downtown Northville.

The Northville Historic District is a quiet region of the town where you can see gorgeous homes and commercial properties dating before the 20th century. Since downtown Northville is rather small and easily walkable in a matter of a few hours, don't pass up the Historic District. It's a great place to wander and admire the architecture. There is also a museum you can visit providing information about Northville's history. Address: 215 Griswold St, Northville, MI 48167 Hours: (museum) M-W 9:00 a.m - 1:00 p.m

An abandoned old car deep inside Maybury State Park.

Here we are, friends! The final item on our list: Maybury State Park! Like I did in my article for downtown Plymouth , I'm sort of cheating this last one here. Maybury State Park is not technically in downtown Northville but it's only about a 10 minute drive from downtown and, frankly, I don't have any other contexts to mention this park so I'm throwing it in here! This park I feel is one that even people who live nearby don't know about! Metro Detroit is not exactly revered for its natural scenery. Maybury State Park is stunning in the summer and fall, especially. That image I posted of the abandoned and stripped car? No mistake-- that's one of the secret things you'll find as you walk further into the park! It's a really rewarding find for all the steps you take to get there! One fascinating bit of trivia about the land: the land was once grounds for a sanatorium! However, in 1971, the sanatorium was closed and the land was revived to being a state park. Remember how I mentioned earlier you can watch horses race at Northville Downs? Well, let me ask you this: have you ever riden a horse? If you've never riden a horse, guess what? You can ride a horse at Maybury State Park! Last, there are trails for bikers here. Maybury State Park is a wonderful park with plenty to do and see and one of my favorite things to do in Northville! Address: 49601 Eight Mile Road, Northville, MI 48167 Hours: 8:00 a.m - 10:00 p.m

During the lockdowns in 2020, the mayor of Northville decided to close off downtown to traffic to give its restaurants a fighting chance. As of April 2023, the streets are still closed to traffic. However, on April 3, 2023, it was announced that traffic in downtown Northville would open up to cars starting in November 2023 and close May 2024-- essentially, cars would be allowed to drive in downtown during the late fall and mid part of spring. As someone who loves exploring cities, I personally support this decision and think its a swell idea. Being able to walk freely in the streets during exploration is incredible and a policy I think more downtowns should put into legislation!

Tunes on Tuesday is a free family-friendly concert series hosted in Northville Town Square and for the year 2023 will run from June 20th to August 15th. The time of the free concert is 10:30 a.m to 11:30 a.m.

Yes! Northville has a low crime rate so it is definitely a safe place to explore alone. The city is considered one of the best places to live in Michigan as most of its residens own their homes, the city has easy access to an amazing state park and outdoor scenery, as well as an active downtown.

While Northville certainly isn't "famous" on a national level, the city is known for having more natural scenery than other neighboring towns in the metro Detroit area. The Victorian-era architecture in its historic district and the well-kept-up status of its home are also highlights of Northville.

Yes-- as an area which embodies true downtown living, it also does come with a loftier price. If you're looking to rent, the apartments in Northville are quite expensive. Aside from the high rent, there aren't many apartments in the area to rent as it is. Most residents of Northville own their home.

Yes-- Northville is part of the "metro Detroit" area.

Is Northville a part of Oakland County?

Most of Northville is part of western Wayne county, with only a small portion of the city located in Oakland County.

Downtown Northville is a wonderful place that gives suburbanites an experience which embodies true downtown living. It's a great place to spend an afternoon and evening when you are visiting and exploring the metro Detroit region. I think the quantity of stellar restaurants alone will keep you coming back here! City council did a tremendous job helping its local businesses and restaurants stay afloat during the pandemic which is why the area did not lose its luster once life began to regain some normalcy. I hope you have enjoyed my list of the 10 best things to do in downtown Northville in 2024! Think I missed anything awesome? I love hearing from my readers and you are free to email me! Thank you for reading! Like... seriously. So many people just skim sh*t and don't read anything past the headline. You're one of the good ones! There is much to do in these suburbs of Detroit, including a stop by Guernsey Farms Dairy for freshly made ice cream and other treats. MLive.com

Located on the west side of the metro Detroit area, two interesting - and completely different - cities are waiting to be explored. We spent a Michigan’s Best Day in downtown Northville and Novi , and found all sorts of fun things to do, and delicious things to eat and drink.

Our best day starts at a local cafe for breakfast, includes shopping at both local and national retailers, some incredible fried chicken and freshly-made ice cream, zooming around the track in a go-kart, a little history and art, and a stop at a brewery.

We’d like to thank our sponsor for this Michigan’s Best Day, Guernsey Farms Dairy.

Tuscan Cafe is a great spot to start your adventure in Northville and Novi. MLive.com

Start your day in the area at the cute and charming Tuscan Cafe, located right on Main Street in downtown Northville. A bustling spot, where it seems like everyone in town stops by at some point during the day, Tuscan Cafe is a coffee shop that offers not just fantastic drink concoctions, but also delicious food to nosh on.

Tuscan Cafe was one of the places visited by Gonzo on his search for Michigan’s Best Coffee . Since then, owner William Hundley has moved his shop to a new, bigger location. He’s been slinging coffees for over 20 years now, and has tweaked both his menu and technique to really rise to a whole new level. You can get a traditional drink like a latte or a mocha, or you can enhance it with the addition of something unique, like turmeric, cardamom or lavender. Breakfast pastries abound, and there are different flavored quiches made with flakey crusts and fresh vegetables. Sandwiches are thick and hearty, and made on Zingerman’s bread. Try the most popular one, the #3, Fly Me to the Moon, which comes layered with turkey breast, melted provolone cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, fresh pesto, avocado and mustard.

"The Twist" is a socially distanced zone located in downtown Northville. You can enjoy drinks while walking around, as well as tables to snuggle up at, and lots of fun outdoor games. MLive.com

Northville was one of the first downtowns in Michigan to create a social district last year. They blocked off two streets downtown, and then local businesses rallied and raised money to build warming huts and shanties along the streets. With the change in liquor laws, you can now head into participating restaurants and bars, and grab a drink to go. They’ll put it in a specially-labeled cup, and you are free to enjoy it anywhere in The Twist.

There are outdoor games like corn hole to play, or you can have a meal in one of the many tents that are set up. On the weekends, you might find live music, or food trucks to enjoy.

While The Twist was born of necessity during the restaurant shut-down, it has proven so popular that Northville is planning on keeping it for the foreseeable future.

According to the website: The boundaries of The Twist are E. Main from Center to Hutton streets, and N. Center from Main to Dunlap streets. Participating restaurants and businesses include:

  • Browndog Creamery
  • Center Street Grille
  • Exchange Bar & Grill
  • Genitti’s Hole-in-the-wall

Ford Motor Company donated a plot of land in downtown Northville, and starting in 1972, historical buildings from other parts of town were moved to this location, creating Mill Race Historical Village, which many call a “mini” Greenfield village.

On weekends, the buildings are open to the public, and you can wander the beautiful grounds and explore the one-room schoolhouse, a church, a working blacksmith shop, the gazebo and even a general store. The site is popular for weddings, and you can even get “married by the mayor” with a special package they developed over that last with an all-inclusive deal where yes, you get married at Mill Race and your ceremony is officiated by Northville Mayor Brian Turnbull.

One World Market in Novi is the largest Japanese food market in Michigan. The offer a constantly rotating selection of sushi and fresh fish in their coolers at this bustling spot. MLive.com

Michigan's Best Day in Novi and Northville

More of the sushi selection at One World Market in Novi. It is Michigan's largest market dedicated to items from Japan. MLive.com

One World Market is the largest Japanese grocery store in Michigan, and one of the largest in the Midwest. It offers a stunning selection of any and all Japanese foods and drinks. You could easily spend hours exploring the shelves, and the helpful staff is on hand to answer any questions you might have about products.

You’ll find a variety of Japanese beers in the cooler, and interesting sakes to try. Japanese whiskeys and other alcohols have a whole wall to themselves. Be sure to check out the “sale” area, which hosts an ever-rotating selection of products that One World Market gets special deals on, and they pass on the savings. They have everything here, from Japanese convenience store items, to shelves of noodles, frozen dumplings, and so much fresh fish you won’t know where to look first. Fish comes whole, filleted, or cut into perfect sushi, and the sheer variety of fish is crazy, including many that get shipped straight from Japan.

One of the biggest draws here is the food court. Right now, inside dining is closed, but you can still stop by and get some of the freshest sushi and sashimi that you’ll find anywhere, packaged and ready to grab and go. They continually refill the case throughout the day, and go through thousands of meals daily.

We tried the popular Michigan roll, which comes with spicy tuna, cucumber, avocado and nori, which was super fresh and delicious. Another local favorite is the Novi, which comes with tuna teriyaki, avocado, cucumber, carrot, cabbage and eel sauce. There’s combo packs of sushi, and bowls of prepared fish and vegetables.

One World Market is worth a visit, whether it’s to stop by and pick up products to cook an authentic Japanese meal at home, or to come pick up some of the freshest sushi and sashimi in all the land.

Michigan's Best Day in Novi and Northville

Racing indoor go-karts will require strength you weren't aware you needed. MLive.com

Adult or kid, you will love the heart-pounding thrill of go-kart racing at JD’s. They are currently in transition to a new name, Full Throttle, but they’ll have the same fun on hand.

This is true go-kart racing, not bumper cars. Make a reservation, and arrive 30 minutes early to get fitted with your helmet and neck brace. If you are 14 or older, your kart can reach speeds of up to 40 miles an hour, which is really fast when you are strapped into an open kart, skidding around the multiple corners and curves. There are a variety of packages to choose from, and JD’s specializes in group events.

Bring your competitive side. You’ll be racing against the others in your group in a time trial, just like we did on our visit. Can you guess which one of us won? #leadfoot

Also, if you are no longer a spring chicken, we will guarantee that you’ll still have a blast. We’ll also guarantee that you’ll be sore the next morning. That G-force does a number on your arms, but it’s totally worth it.

Not only can you get an incredible ice cream cone at Guersney Farms Dairy, you can also enjoy lunch, and a beer, or a boozy handmade milkshake. MLive.com

Guernsey Farms Dairy is also well known for their fried chicken, which is crunchy, moist and flavorful. MLive.com

Michigan's Best Day in Novi and Northville

The hot fried chicken sandwich at Guernsey Farms Dairy has just enough heat to make it interesting. MLive.com

Guernsey Farms Dairy has been a local favorite for ice cream for generations. This popular spot has been open since 1940, and is now on the third generation of the McGuire family operating and owning the dairy. They are “committed to uncompromised quality” in everything they do at Guernsey Farms Dairy. Fresh milk is delivered multiple times each week from Walnutdale Farms in Wayland, Michigan, a fourth-generation, family owned and operated farm. Guernsey then processes the fresh milk into all sorts of delicious things, everything from their popular ice cream, to rich chocolate milk, thick sour cream and chip dip, and a line of lovely sundae toppings, including caramel and hot fudge.

Pop on into the dairy to grab a scoop or two of some of the amazing flavors of ice cream they have at Guernsey. Classics like chocolate and butter pecan are here, or try something unique like Tilt-A-Swirl, Sea Salt Turtle Swirl, McGuire’s Irish Mint, Midnight Train to Traverse, Butterscotch Fudge, or Birthday Cake. We recommend a freshly-made waffle cone as your sweet treat delivery system for ultimate enjoyability.

Right next door to the scoop shop is their restaurant, which features an all-scratch menu of homestyle classics. It’s a must-stop for fried chicken, which is exemplary, and would totally be in the running as Michigan’s Best. The chicken gets brined in Guernsey buttermilk, which creates both moisture and flavor. The chicken then gets pressure-fried, which seals in the juice while creating a crispy coating. Order by the piece or the bucket, and add a house-made side like baked mac and cheese, pickles or buttermilk biscuits and you’ve got quite a meal. Other favorites at the restaurant include fresh fried potato chips with the dairy’s famous chip dip, Grandpa John’s chili topped with sour cream and cheese, a jammin’ double cheeseburger, and Paul’s fried bologna sandwich.

A recent addition to the dairy is a full bar, where you can order up a Michigan craft beer, glass of wine, or a homemade Bloody Mary. They also make some truly delicious boozy milkshakes here, featuring their incredible ice cream enhanced with some of the good stuff. It’s the perfect ending to a delicious visit to Guernsey Farms Dairy.

Villa Barr Park in Novi is the former home of internationally renowned sculptor David Barr and his wife, Beth Dwaihy Barr. It sits on four acres and is home to the city's artist in residence program. John Gonzalez

A 4-acre park located on property formerly owned by internationally-known sculptor David Barr and his wife, Beth Dwaihy Barr, Villa Barr Park is a lovely place to walk through to experience his art. There are gravel paths running through and to several different sculpture areas. You can also check out his studio, and the couple’s home, which was designed by Chicago architect Laurence Booth.

Carina and Rob Nelson own Northville Winery and Brewing Company, which has a fantastic outdoor space to enjoy their beer, wine and ciders. MLive.com

Located right next to the seasonal, and very popular, Northville Cider Mill is Northville Winery and Brewing Company. Both are owned by the Nelson family, and while the cider mill is a traditional stop for many in the area in the fall for cider and doughnuts, the brewery draws patrons year-round to their awesome space nestled right alongside the railroad tracks.

Owners Carina and Rob Nelson made the effort last year to upgrade their outdoor space, and it has paid off. The brewery has multiple tents scattered across the lawn, with picnic tables, comfy chairs, and hay bales to sit on. There is a stage set up for live music, which typically happens Wednesday through Saturdays, and features local bands. Food trucks stop by during the week, and you can find the schedule of them online. You can walk up to the order window to grab a beer or cider. We loved the crystal clear, and very tasty, Wallflower cider, which gets a lovely addition of lavender. If you’re a hop head, you have to get the Rock Me Hopadeus, an American IPA which just might have the best beer name we’ve heard in a while.

About Northville, MI

Location details, buying or selling a home.

The Detroit, MI metro area is known for its significant role in the automotive industry, earning it the nickname "Motor City." Founded in 1701 by French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, Detroit has a long history that includes being a hub for the manufacturing and music industries. The city played a crucial part in the development of the American automobile sector, housing giants like General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler.

Geographically, Detroit is situated in southeastern Michigan, along the Detroit River, which connects Lake St. Clair to Lake Erie. This location has influenced the city's development and culture, providing residents with beautiful waterfront views and recreational opportunities. The area's flat terrain is complemented by a mix of urban and suburban neighborhoods, offering various living environments.

Traditionally, Detroit's economy was heavily reliant on the automotive industry. However, recent decades have seen efforts to diversify, with growth in healthcare, technology, finance, and advanced manufacturing sectors. Despite facing economic challenges, including population decline and urban decay, Detroit has been undergoing revitalization, especially in downtown areas, attracting new businesses and investments.

Voting in the Detroit metro area has historically leaned towards the Democratic Party, reflecting the city's large African American population and its focus on civil rights and social justice issues. However, political views can vary across different neighborhoods and suburbs, contributing to a dynamic political landscape.

Living in Detroit offers a mix of experiences. The city is home to a wide range of cultural and recreational activities, including museums, theaters, sports teams, and outdoor parks. The cost of living is relatively affordable compared to other major cities, with various housing options available. Detroit's rich cultural heritage is evident in its music scene, including the legacy of Motown, and its architectural landmarks.

New residents should be aware of the ongoing efforts to revitalize the city, which include addressing economic challenges and improving infrastructure. While some areas continue to face issues related to crime and blight, there are also many positive developments and opportunities for community involvement. It's important for newcomers to research neighborhoods and consider factors such as safety, amenities, and access to transportation. Being prepared for the region's climate, characterized by cold winters and hot summers, is also essential.

In summary, the Detroit, MI metro area offers a combination of historical significance, economic diversity, and cultural activities. While acknowledging the challenges, new residents can also appreciate the opportunities for growth and the strong sense of community present in many parts of the city.

Get in the Festive Mood with Holiday “Grinchmas” Events in Michigan

When you think of your favorite Christmas characters, Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman, and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer are probably near the top of your list. But what about The Grinch?

The Grinch, the famous green-hued grouch from Dr. Seuss’s 1957 story “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” has also earned his place as a holiday favorite. This once-reviled, now-beloved character has stealthily stolen hearts just as he once tried to steal Christmas.

Across the nation, the Grinch’s popularity is clear, with his image featured in parade floats, as giant inflatables in yards, and in dazzling Christmas light displays . This is especially true in Michigan, where Grinch events are a highlight of the holiday season.

Whether you need a bit of Christmas cheer to boost your spirits, you’re a big fan of the Grinch, or you’re looking for a new holiday event to attend, consider checking out these Grinch-themed celebrations during the Christmas season .

Canterbury Village-Lake Orion

Whoville 5K | Northville and Grand Rapids

At first glance, the Whoville 5K is another holiday-themed run/walk, but it’s much more than that. The Whoville 5K is a place more than just a race and it’s filled with all of the wackiest, Grinch-themed fun one could imagine.

Participants can dress in their best Dr. Seuss-themed costumes and see all of their favorite characters along the race route, including The Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2, and the Mean One himself, The Grinch.

Everyone who participates in the race gets a medal and a festive hat and is invited to snack on sweet treats after the race is over in the Who-village.

Proceeds from each race benefit local charities.

Grinchmas Craft and Vendor Show | Lansing

Note: The 2023 event occurred over Thanksgiving weekend.

Michiganders and visitors looking to cross friends and loved ones off their Christmas list early can attend this Grinch-themed crafts fair at the Lansing Mall, which features local vendors and crafters selling all sorts of Christmas wares, including food and crafts.

This is a perfect place to check friends and loved ones off your holiday shopping list and the Grinch is there for photo ops.

Dinner with Santa and the Grinch | Fraser

The Big Man in Red is coming to town in December and he’s bringing his grumpy green friend along with him!

The Grinch and Santa Claus will set aside their differences (for at least one night anyway) to celebrate a fun evening with guests.

Those who attend will be treated to a magnificent buffet of holiday favorites along with live music and plenty of stories from both Santa and the Grinch.

Guests can bring their cameras to get photos with both of the guests of honor and each child who attends will get a special gift from Santa.

Grinch-Christmas

Grinch Weekend at Canterbury Village | Lake Orion

Canterbury Village goes all out for celebrations when the holidays arrive including an annual free Grinch Weekend.

Visitors of all ages can make a donation to a local food pantry to get a free selfie with the Grinch (Cindy Lou Who has also made appearances in past years) and also enjoy holiday shopping at village stores, hot cocoa and cider, fire pits, and much more.

Breakfast With Santa or The Grinch at Canterbury Village | Lake Orion

Canterbury Villages looking for a festive way to enjoy breakfast during the holidays can buy tickets for select dates in November and December to have breakfast with either the Grinch or Santa.

The breakfast includes a scrumptious buffet of eggs, bacon, sausage, and other breakfast favorites and this event is a fun way to enjoy breakfast with a beloved holiday character.

Fairytale Fun Place-Clarkston

Meet the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who | Clarkston

The Fairytale FUN Place is offering youngsters two chances to meet the Grinch and little Cindy Lou Who in December with a pair of evenings packed with holiday fun.

Visitors can get their photos taken with this beloved Christmas trio and spend an entire evening basking in holiday fun and making plenty of great memories.

Grinch Movie Screenings at Michigan Theatres

Several Metro Detroit theaters have showtimes during the holiday season for the 2000 live-action version of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” starring Jim Carrey.

Google “ theater showing The Grinch near me ” to see if there are screenings of the cult holiday classic or another version of the Grinch story.

Some venues such as the Great Lakes Center for the Arts are offering double the holiday fun and will show a double feature of “Home Alone” and the 2018 animated version of The Grinch just before Christmas.

See a Performance of The Grinch Musical

Dr. Seuss’ classic story of the Grinch, who hates Christmas, resolves to steal it, and then discovers the true meaning of the holiday was first made into a musical in 1994.

Today, it’s a seasonal musical that’s drawn rave reviews and continues to tour all over the nation. The musical had several performances at Detroit’s Fox Theatre in November 2023 and has also made past stops in Midland and Kalamazoo, so keep your eyes peeled during the holidays for upcoming performances.

Watch The Grinch at Home

Whether you’re able to make it to one of Michigan’s magical Grinch-themed events or not, one of the best ways to get your Grinchy fill is by watching the Grinch at home.

The 1966 animated adaption of the story starring Boris Karloff is a holiday classic as is Jim Carrey’s 2000 live-action adaptation. Viewers can also enjoy the 2018 animated version of the story, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

Movie nights are popular during the holiday season, so grab some of your favorite Michigan snacks , get cozy, and start watching!

Note: As of November 2023, the 1966 TV special, the 2018 Grinch movie, and Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical Live! are all streaming on Peacock. The live-action movie is available to rent on several streaming services. The 2018 cartoon version is available on Prime Video .

Canterbury Village-Lake Orion

Experience the Fun of a Grinch-Themed Holiday Event in Michigan

If you’re like the Whos down in Whoville and you like Christmas a lot, Michigan’s Grinch-themed events are perfect for those looking for a little more holiday cheer.

Whether you dress up in your best Grinch costume and run the Whoville 5K, you binge-watch Grinch shows and movies at home or you snap a selfie with the Mean One at a meet and greet, there are plenty of events during the holidays for people of all ages to have fun with the Grinch!

James Andersen is an award-winning journalist and editor who was born and raised in Metro Detroit but currently resides on the shores of Lake Huron in Alpena, Michigan. When he’s not knee-deep in research or conducting interviews for stories, he can be found fishing, cheering on Detroit sports teams, and spending time with his wife and two dogs.
