kenya & tanzania wildlife safari

Starts Nairobi. Ends Nairobi or Arusha – We’ll pick you up from the airport or your hotel.

Enjoy this amazing safari in a customized pop-up roof 4×4 Safari Jeep that includes: Cooler Box, long-range high-frequency radio, Power Outlets AC 230V, First Aid Kit, and above all, a professional multi-lingual safari guide  who will ensure you have an unforgettable safari experience.

Option to start tour at Amboseli and finish in Arusha.

Kenya or Tanzania ? Which to visit? Choose both on this exciting 10-day African safari to the best national parks on both sides of the border. You’ll visit gems like Tarangire Park and Lake Nakuru with its population of rare Rothschild’s giraffe. At Lake Naivasha , relax on a sailing safari past curious hippos and grazing wildlife on the nearby shore.

How to describe the world-famous Masai Mara and its neighboring Serengeti Park – be prepared to witness the spectacle of the largest wildlife migration on the planet. And Ngorongoro Crater will present you with a dense volcano floor alive with its own world of highly concentrated wildlife.

Amboseli Park is so populated with elephant life you are guaranteed multiple sightings. This is a well-balanced tour spending equal time in both countries. You’ll be able to say you’ve seen and experienced the best of Kenya and Tanzania.

Let’s Begin this Journey

Your 10-day safari begins in Nairobi and takes an easy drive through the Rift Valley escarpment and its dramatic landforms. We’ll stop along the way to admire the towering ridges and cliff formations. Soon the blue waters of Lake Naivasha come into view inviting us to explore and take a sail past bathing hippos and nearby giraffe, zebra, and antelope.

It’s a quick trip to nearby Crescent Island Sanctuary and a guided walking safari past the grazing wildlife and colorful waterfowl. Then we’ll pack into the 4 x 4, headed for Lake Nakuru , passing Lake Elementaita and its hundreds of bird species.

Arriving at Nakuru, savor this beautiful park adorned with acacia forest and home to black and white rhino. You may also spot lion, leopard, and hippo. Season and weather permitting you’ll be treated to flocks of pink flamingos blanketing the lake.

Then it’s off to the king of Kenya parks, the Masai Mara National Reserve . The Mara never fails to impress with its intense concentration of big game wildlife. During the migration season, the animal population magnifies significantly into the millions. Wave upon wave of zebra, wildebeest, and eland cross the Mara River creating a spectacle that’s simply unforgettable.

Into Tanzania

Crossing into Tanzania brings us into the color and excitement of the immense Serengeti National Park . The great treeless savannahs here roll out past the horizon, hosting the largest population of lions in Africa – reportedly more than 3,000 in this ecosystem alone. During your game drives, you’ll also be tracking for leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo.

Besides those Big Five predators, your day will be filled with possible sightings of cheetah, zebra, giraffe, Thompson’s gazelle, eland, impala, hippo, and the irrepressible warthog.

Descending the Ngorongoro

Our next adventure is one of the most unique landforms anywhere, the Ngorongoro Crater . This is the world’s largest dormant, intact volcanic caldera. We’ll descend its walls down to the crater floor to a special place of intense wildlife concentration. We’ll be looking for the many prides of lion here as well as other big game – rhino, elephant, leopard, buffalo, hippo, cheetah and more.

As if your day couldn’t get any better, we’ll head back up in the late afternoon to catch Africa’s most dazzling sunset at the crater rim.

Now it’s a short drive to a very special wildlife preserve, Tarangire National Park , home to hundreds of species of birdlife, magnificent towering baobab trees, and great herds of elephants. Even the large termite mounds dotting the landscape are an unusual sight in this unique natural habitat.

Safari Back to Kenya

Then we’re crossing the border again, back into Kenya to visit our final destination, Amboseli National Park . Elephants abound here but also get ready for lion, cheetah, wildebeest, gazelle, monkeys, and lots of birdlife.

Amboseli also features Africa’s best views of Mt. Kilimanjaro . In the mornings and early evenings when the clouds clear you may get postcard views of the snow-capped summit of the highest peak on the continent.

Then, it’s an easy drive back to Nairobi and safari’s end.

All-Inclusive. Your 10-Day safari includes park entrance fees, accommodations, and meals. Natural World Safaris always offers a wide choice of accommodations. Depending on your budget and style choose from economy, comfort, or luxury safari lodges or tented camps.

Your Guide . For your entire 10-day journey you’ll be guided, hosted, and looked after by your own experienced driver/guide. And you’ll enjoy the adventure of your own private 4 x 4 Land Cruiser Jeep, the only way to safari.

Customize Your Safari

If you’d like to customize your safari or have any special wishes, please let us know. For example, you can begin your safari at Amboseli Park instead of Naivasha/Nakuru and finish up in Arusha . Our Pride of East Africa Safari Stands Above the Rest!

  • A Rare Secluded Experience, away from Crowds There’s no question East Africa draws a lot of safari travelers. The abundant wildlife in the famous national parks of Kenya and Tanzania makes them duly popular destinations. That’s why we concentrate on private reserves where wildlife abounds but visitor numbers are strictly limited. We know you don't want to come all the way to East Africa to see a lion surrounded by 15 or 20 other safari vehicles. On the exclusive private conservancies we focus on, we'll be mostly alone with the animals.
  • An Itinerary Designed Around the Migration Many companies operate the same standard “migration safari" circuit year-round, with no concern to time specific locations with the arrival of the herds. We focus on the best time to see the animals, then build our itineraries and dates around that, attempting to time our presence for peak viewing. An integral feature is our mobile base camps, strategically positioned for proximity to where wildlife is most prolific at that season.
  • Exclusive Safari Activities on Private Reserves Most safaris stay within the main areas of the most popular national parks and reserves. In contrast, we choose remote small safari camps on private conservancies within the Maasai Mara and Serengeti ecosystems, away from big lodges and roads filled with vehicles. From these adjacent reserves, we have easy access to more remote sectors of the parks while also enjoying special privileges not allowed within their bounds, such as guided safari walks, off-road driving and night drives in search of nocturnal wildlife.
  • Meet the World's Last Two White Rhinos & Witness Conservation in Action Located on the Laikipia Plateau in the shadow of Mount Kenya, Ol Pejeta is a working cattle ranch, which first set aside land for rhino conservation in 1988. Today this 90,000-acre preserve is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa and home to Earth's last two northern white rhinos . Visit this pair of females with their guards, and learn about groundbreaking science that's being done to save their species.
  • Coveted Early Morning Access to Ngorongoro Crater We've designed our itinerary to make sure we are at the gate to enter Ngorongoro Crater the moment the reserve opens early in the morning. Our timing ensures a full day on safari in the crater, with an early arrival to beat the crowds. With expedited access to wildlife viewing on the crater floor early in the morning, we'll be there when many animals are most active.
  • Small Groups Mean Better Wildlife Encounters We travel with a maximum of  12 guests. Many East African safaris take groups of 20 or more, packed into cramped mini-buses. Small groups mean we get closer to the herds, have better photo opportunities, and our experience is enriched by personalized interpretation from our Expedition Leaders as we watch the wildlife action side by side.
  • Maximize Comfort & Time with Internal Flights  Many safari companies transport you to and from the bush by vehicle—meaning long, dusty drives over rough roads. We’ve included flights wherever possible, maximizing time for what you have come to East Africa for: wildlife viewing on safari.
  • Count on a Window Seat & Plenty of Space in Our Chartered Vehicles We limit the number in each safari vehicle to maximize comfort, and every traveler has a window seat for unimpeded views and photography—this is not the case with every safari operator.
  • The World's Finest Safari Guides Natural Habitat Adventures is known worldwide for employing the finest naturalist guides on the planet. In Kenya and Tanzania, our own Expedition Leaders  are with our groups from beginning to end. They are among the most highly trained guides in Africa, averaging more than 15 years' guiding experience and dedicated to sharing exceptional knowledge and highly personalized service. Their training is further enhanced with resources from WWF’s top scientists. See Expedition Leader bios  and traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
  • Our Quality-Value Guarantee Ensures Your Superior Safari Experience Natural Habitat Adventures offers an exclusive guarantee, which clearly states that we will meet the lofty expectations we set forth in our promotional materials. To our knowledge, this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company. Read our important promise.
  • Feel Good About Your Carbon-Neutral Journey We care deeply about our planet, as we know you do. When you travel with us, the carbon emissions from your trip are 100% offset—including your round-trip flights from home. Natural Habitat Adventures has been the world’s first carbon-neutral travel company since 2007.

The Savannah Safari: Gold

Just saying the names of East African safari destinations is bound to cause a serious case of wanderlust. Names like Serengeti and Masai Mara resonate with anyone who loves to travel, while less well-known places like Bwindi, Tarangire or Samburu offer the promise of unique, unforgettable safari experiences.

East Africa Safari Destinations

Giraffe find refuge in Kenya's conservation areas. © iStock

Kenya has as good a claim as anywhere to being the country where modern safaris began, and where they’re done best, and it still regularly features high on travel magazines ‘must-visit’ lists. Kenya has been doing what it does best for decades, and yet there’s always something new to discover on Kenya safaris.

Ol Pejeta is a pioneering wildlife conservancy. © Shutterstock

Ol Pejeta is a pioneering wildlife conservancy in Laikipia – Kenya’s high country. With the emphasis firmly on species conservation, Ol Pejeta safaris offer not only exceptional opportunities to view species that are scarce elsewhere, but also to learn about, contribute to and even participate in ground-breaking and impactful conservation projects.

Samburu is well known for the elephant research carried out there. © Shutterstock

Samburu is the ‘other Kenya’ – this semi-arid region in the north of the country feels very different to say the Masai Mara or Amboseli. It’s much drier and the scenery is more rugged. Even the wildlife is different, with species that aren’t found elsewhere in Kenya. What’s not to enjoy about Samburu safaris?

Lions certainly rule the Masai Mara. © Shutterstock

The place that launched a thousand clips, and millions of images. There’s no more iconic safari destination than Kenya’s Masai Mara, with its eponymous tribespeople, millions of thundering hooves, and equal parts drama, magic and romance. Kenya itineraries without Masai Mara safaris are almost unthinkable, and every moment spent there is unforgettable.

Mount Kilimanjaro guards Amboseli. © Shutterstock

Amboseli is known as Kenya’s land of giants, and it’s not hard to see why. Africa’s tallest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, towers over the national park, and it’s also one of the best places in East Africa to encounter elephant in numbers. No wonder people use superlatives to describe Amboseli safaris.

Mountain gorillas are at home in Rwanda's wild places. © Shutterstock

Rwanda has completed a remarkable transformation as a nation and has reinvented itself as a superb safari vacation destination. Rwanda safaris have traditionally focused on mountain gorilla encounters, but visits to the land of a thousand hills also offer more conventional – but no less remarkable – safari experiences, plus insights into its rich cultural heritage.

Safaris in Volcanoes National Park enable an entry into the unique ecosystem on which the gorilla depend. © Shutterstock

Volcanoes National Park is perhaps the quintessential Rwandan safari destination, and one of only a handful of places where iconic mountain gorilla can be encountered at close quarters. Volcanoes safaris enable an entry into the unique ecosystem on which the gorilla depend – a world of soaring summits and mysterious, misty forests.

At times, Lake Elmenteita appears glass like. © Shutterstock

Lake Elmenteita offers a more secluded safari destination than either of its neighbouring lakes (Naivasha and Nakuru), which can make it feel more exclusive. The unique volcanic landscape adds to the sense of being wonderfully removed from all that’s unimportant – and the unusual wildlife species seen on Lake Elmenteita safaris only reinforce this impression.

Beautiful giraffes roam the Serengeti. © Shutterstock

The Serengeti takes its name from a Maasai word meaning ‘where the land runs on forever’. It’s one of the most evocative and iconic safari destinations of all – not least because it’s the stage on which much of the drama of the Great Wildebeest Migration is played out each year.

Tanzania is a wilderness paradise. © Shutterstock

Tanzania is an East African safari powerhouse, not least because in the Serengeti it features one of the greatest of all wilderness areas, and the backdrop for the annual Great Wildebeest Migration. Factor in Indian Ocean Islands, too, and it’s clear that Tanzania safaris can be all things to all people.

Ngorongoro Crater used to be a volcano. © iStock

Descending into the Ngorongoro Crater from one of the luxury lodges perched on its rim is one of the most remarkable safari experiences available in Tanzania. Driving across an ancient volcanic caldera, the wildlife may seem familiar, but the setting is quite unique, and this makes for wonderful photographic opportunities.

Uganda is famed for its mountain gorilla. © Shutterstock

Uganda, an East African country known as ‘the pearl of Africa’, offers the warmest of welcomes and an incredible diversity of wildlife experiences. Uganda safaris can include savannah and mountain moments, excursions into cloud forests and discovering the source of the Nile. It’s this variety of habitats that explains Uganda’s remarkable biodiversity.

You'll never forget seeing a silverback mountain gorilla in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. © iStock

Despite its name, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is not quite as inaccessible as might be imagined. Indeed, given that the forest contains around half of all the world’s remaining mountain gorilla, Bwindi safaris are actually perfect for travellers wanting to experience one of Africa’s most moving and engaging species up close and personal.

Lake Naivasha's shore is full of game. © Shutterstock

Lake Naivasha safaris take you to a literal and metaphorical oasis, offering a change of pace without any reduction in wildlife-viewing opportunities. Renowned for its spectacular birdlife, Naivasha nevertheless has a number of other feathers in its cap. While easily reached from Nairobi, it feels a million miles from the hustle of the city.

My wife and I had the pleasure of traveling to Kenya and exploring the country with Wildlife Safari Kenya. They planned out our entire itinerary in-country and handled everything from lodging to airport transfers and travel. Leonard was incredibly knowledgable not only of the Mara, but of every corner of the country. Reflecting on our time in Kenya, my wife and I have repeatedly stated that we wouldn't do the trip with anyone but Wildlife Safari, and that we are counting down the days until we get to go again. | SETH HALL on Google Reviews

Detailed Itinerary: Kenya And Tanzania Safari

Day 1: nairobi, kenya.

We’ll pick you up at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi and start your Kenya and Tanzania safari adventure from there. Your guide will pick you up at the airport and drive you to the hotel in the city. The rest of the day is at your leisure, so you may take advantage of the hotel’s pool and complimentary WiFi or go out and about in Nairobi, Kenya’s vibrant metropolis.

Accommodation: Nairobi hotel

Day 2: Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

We’ll be leaving Nairobi for Kenya’s premier safari site, Masai Mara National Reserve, in the western part of the country first thing in the morning. We take in the breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley as we go across it. Upon arrival at our tented camp in Masai Mara, lunch is served. The safari camp is near the Oloirigynyisho River, a popular hangout for zebras, elephants, and wildebeests. Siana’s Conservancy, a private concession area within Masai Mara, serves as the location for the action.

Our first thrilling game drive in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve will begin later in the afternoon. Masai Mara, one of Africa’s top wildlife reserves, is home to a wide variety of animals all through the year. You might expect to encounter a wide variety of animals this afternoon, possibly including the “Big 5” of Africa: lions, leopards, rhinoceroses, elephants, and buffalo. As the sun sets over the Oloolotikoshi Hills, we make our way back to the tented camp where we spent the night after our first thrilling game drive.

Accommodation: Tented Camp in Masai Mara Conservancy Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Activities Included: Afternoon game drive in Masai Mara

Day 3 & 4: Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

Our Kenya and Tanzania safari will continue with two days in the Masai Mara National Reserve . In an open 4×4 safari vehicle, your knowledgeable guide will show you the abundant wildlife and birds of Masai Mara.

Every morning, we begin with a game drive. The hottest portion of the day is when we return to our tents for lunch and a nap. As the sun begins to set, we head out for afternoon wildlife drives. Many animals are most active in the early mornings and late afternoons, making those times ideal for game viewing. Every night, we head back to the tented camp to relax in the lodge and take in the natural surroundings.

The Great Migration is a seasonal movement of wildlife that passes through Masai Mara . You might see thousands of migrating wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles if your safari is timed well. However, game watching is excellent year-round in Masai Mara. It’s famous for its great opportunities to see large cats like lions and cheetahs. In addition to rhinos and leopards, this Kenyan national reserve is home to a wide variety of other wildlife, including elephants, buffalos, giraffes, migrating wildebeest, and other antelope species.

On one of our days in Masai Mara, we can also go on a hot-air balloon safari for an additional fee. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see wildlife up close and personal, and it is a highlight of every safari in the Masai Mara.

Day 5: Masai Mara to Hells Gate National Park, Kenya

Day five of our Kenya and Tanzania Safari begins with breakfast at the lodge before we hit the road. The next stop after we leave Masai Mara is Hell’s Gate National Park, which is located to the south of Lake Naivasha. Despite its scary moniker, this small national park is a great place to go on safari with your family. It was named after a narrow entrance in its cliffs. Hells Gate is well-known for its abundance of wildlife, unique landscape, and thrilling variety of activities.

Due to the lack of huge predators, visitors can walk freely around the park, or for an additional fee, rent bicycles and ride them throughout the park. After a day of seeing Hell’s Gate National Park, we’ll be making the trip to Lake Naivasha for the night.

Accommodation: Hotel at Lake Naivasha Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Activities Included: Visit Hell’s Gate National Park

Day 6: Lake Naivasha to Amboseli National Park, Kenya

The next stop on our Kenyan safari was Amboseli National Park , and we left shortly after breakfast to make our way there. We’ll be traveling through Nairobi, and we’ll eat our meals in the car. This afternoon we begin on a picturesque wildlife drive in Amboseli, Kenya’s second most popular national park. The park is well-known for its intimate encounters with elephants, which are often accompanied by views of Mount Kilimanjaro . After our game drive, we’ll return to our tent lodge outside the park for dinner and a relaxing evening.

Accommodation: Tented Camp at Amboseli National Park Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Activities Included: Afternoon Game Drive in Amboseli National Park

Day 7: Amboseli National Park, Kenya

We’ll be in Amboseli National Park all day today, hoping to spot some wild animals. Morning and afternoon game drives in the national park are included on our Kenya and Tanzania safari, with meals and free time back at the tented resort in between.

One of the greatest sites to watch elephants in Africa is Amboseli National Park , which is famous for its huge tusked old bull elephants. The area is also home to a wide variety of other creatures, such as cheetahs, wild dogs, leopards, buffalo, lions, crocodiles, hippos, giraffes, and more. Look out for grazing animals like wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and more. Because of its different habitats and proximity to the Kenyan and Tanzanian borders, Amboseli is an especially beautiful wildlife area. The peak of Africa’s tallest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro , will be seen on a clear day. Over 420 bird species have been documented in Amboseli, and they include pelicans, bee-eaters, kingfishers, African fish eagles, and pygmy falcons, all of which will excite birdwatchers.

Day 8: Amboseli, Kenya to Moshi, Tanzania

Our safari across Kenya and Tanzania continues today as we visit Tanzania . We break camp for breakfast and then continue on our way. The next step involves loading up on sandwiches and heading south to the Tarakea border. Your safari guide in Tanzania will pick up the reins from here on out.

Visit Materuni Waterfalls in Tanzania’s Moshi region on your first day there. On the way to the waterfall, we take in the sights of this scenic region. The waters and pools at Materuni Waterfall are incredibly clean and make for a spectacular sight. The 30-minute hike through coffee and banana plantations, fruit orchards, and vegetable gardens to reach this breathtaking waterfall is more than worthwhile. The waterfall itself is roughly 150 meters in height. Along with the gorgeous native flora and fauna, we’ll be able to witness smaller waterfalls and the canals that irrigate the local farmers on our journey. We’ll take a break for lunch at the waterfall, where you can swim in the pools or just take in the breathtaking scenery.

Then, we’ll have our first taste of Tanzanian culture at the nearby community of Materuni. The town sits at an elevation of 1300 meters (4,300 feet), surrounded by forested mountains and cliffs. We take a stroll through the quaint town and chat with the residents to learn more about the Chagga people of Tanzania.

Our day in Materuni comes to a close, and we head back to our hotel in Moshi for some much-needed rest, dinner, and overnight accommodations. Moshi is the city where most climbers begin their Kilimanjaro expeditions, lying close to the iconic mountain.

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Activities Included: Visit Materuni waterfalls & village

Day 9: Olpopongi Cultural Village Tour, Tanzania

We leave for the Olpopongi Maasai Cultural Village after breakfast. The Maasai culture and history can be studied here to great effect. The village leader and Maasai people will serve you cold beverages as soon as you arrive. Olpopongi is a reconstructed Maasai boma (a fenced household) designed to look like the traditional bomas seen in the area. There is a tiny museum in the village where visitors can learn more about the history of this noble African people.

Our native Maasai guide leads us on a stroll through the hamlet as he explains the culture and history of the Maasai people in Tanzania. Learn about the Maasai of Tanzania through their food and try some chai, a traditional drink made over an open fire. Then we have a delicious lunch when we try a wide range of regional specialties. This afternoon we begin on an interesting walking safari in the bush around the settlement. Maasa warriors will lead you on a guided stroll while explaining the area flora and fauna, including medicinal herbs, unique trees, and animal trails. While you’re in the wilderness, your guides will teach you how to make a fire using traditional methods and how to use Maasai tools and spears for hunting.

As we make our way back to the village on foot, we pause for a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. The Maasai men and women then put on a performance of traditional song and dance as the sun goes down. As part of our immersion into Masai culture, we’re going to spend the night in the town of Olpopongi.

Accommodation: Olpopongi Cultural Village Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Activities Included: Olpopongi Maasai Cultural Village Tour

Day 10: Olpopongi to Lake Manyara National Park, Tanzania

After breakfast in the cultural village on day 10, we head to Lake Manyara National Park . The first stop on the world-famous Northern Tanzania Safari Circuit is Lake Manyara National Park, one of Tanzania’s best.

We take our first game drive in Tanzania upon our arrival at Lake Manyara. Located in the Great Rift Valley, this small yet beautiful national park in Tanzania is centered on Lake Manyara. Our game drive offers a chance to observe tree-climbing lions, elephants, giraffes, and many other animals. We’re having lunch in Lake Manyara National Park as part of our wildlife drive. After settling into our local accommodation, we’ll head out for dinner while admiring Mount Meru.

Accommodation: Lodge near Lake Manyara National Park Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Activities Included: Afternoon Game Drive in Lake Manyara National Park

Day 11: Lake Manyara to Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

On day 11 of our safari in Kenya and Tanzania, we leave for Serengeti National Park after breakfast. Serengeti Park is one of the best game parks in Africa and the most popular safari destination in Tanzania. It is frequently considered, along with Kenya’s Masai Mara, to be Africa’s finest wildlife preserve.

After arriving at the park’s entrance, we set off on a game drive to our camp in the Seronera section of Serengeti. As soon as we approach this world-famous African park, our safari adventure will begin. The Seronera section of Serengeti National Park is where you’ll find the greatest number of big cats (lions, cheetahs, and leopards), as well as a wide variety of other wildlife. Relax and eat dinner in our tent camp in the Serengeti, keeping an eye out for wildlife as you take in the scenery.

Accommodation: Tented Camp inside Serengeti National Park Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Activities Included: Game Drive to Tented Camp in Serengeti National Park

Day 12: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Time to go on a Serengeti safari for the day! We leave bright and early to begin our exploration of the illustrious Seronera area. The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is the country’s largest wildlife preserve, at 14,736 square kilometers (5,690 square miles). It has unfenced boundaries with Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve , allowing animals (but not humans) to freely roam back and forth between the two parks.

Every season in Serengeti is a highlight for wildlife enthusiasts. It is home to enormous numbers of various wildlife species that can be spotted throughout the year. It is possible to see enormous herds of wildebeests stampeding or grazing in the Serengeti on your safari if it occurs during the Great Migration. Many animals give birth during the calving season, which typically occurs between January and March. About 2 million wildebeests and other herbivores make the annual journey between Masai Mara and Serengeti in search of new grazing areas, an event known as the Great Migration. Zebras, Thomson’s gazelles, impalas, topi, Grant’s gazelles, eland, Kirk’s dik-dik, klipspringer, roan, oryx, oribi, waterbuck, buffalo, giraffe, and even warthogs can be found among the herds. Predators including lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, and bat-eared foxes congregate here to feast on the herbivores.

Ostriches, kori bustards, lilac-breasted rollers, larks, finches, and raptors are just few of the birds that can be seen at Serengeti National Park.

Accommodation: Tented Camp inside Serengeti National Park Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Activities Included: Full-Day Serengeti National Park Safari

Day 13: Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

Enjoy an early breakfast in the tented camp as you watch the sun rise over the untamed bush in the middle of Serengeti National Park . We next leave Serengeti Park, stopping to see wildlife on the way out, and go south to the Ngorongoro Crater. On day 13 of our Kenya and Tanzania safari, we will spend most of our time in the crater looking for animals. In the morning, we bring our sandwiches and descend to the crater floor.

Ngorongoro Crater has one of the largest concentrations of animals in Africa, earning it the nickname “Garden of Eden.” The world’s largest unflooded volcano chamber (volcanic caldera). Both the landscape and the wildlife are breathtaking. The caldera is home to nearly all of Tanzania’s large animal species. One of the best spots to watch elephants and lions in Kenya and Tanzania, as well as rhinos. As you explore Ngorongoro, you’ll begin to see why it’s considered one of the world’s seven natural wonders.

After spending time in awe at the treasures of Ngorongoro Crater, we will go to our cozy private resort in the area.

Accommodation: Lodge near Ngorongoro Crater Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Activities Included: Full-Day Ngorongoro Crater Safari

Day 14: Ngorongoro Crater to Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

On day 14, we left right after breakfast to drive to Tarangire National Park . Once we get to Tarangire, the last wildlife location on our Kenya and Tanzania Safari, we’ll go on a game drive.

We enter the park and make our way to the Tarangire River, a popular gathering spot for elephants, antelopes, and other wildlife. The Tarangire River is the only reliable source of water in the park, hence it is where most of the animal activity takes place. The largest concentration of elephants in all of Tanzania may be found in Tarangire National Park.

We return to our tented camp on the banks of the Tarangire River after an exciting wildlife drive in Tarangire National Park.

Accommodation: Tented lodge near Tarangire National Park Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Activities Included: Game Drive in Tarangire National Park

Day 15: Tarangire National Park to Arusha and Nairobi, Kenya

At leisure, we eat breakfast at the tented lodge on our last morning of safari in Kenya and Tanzania. Then, we take a private transfer to Nairobi from Arusha. Return to Nairobi is expected about 18:00. Here, your driver will take you to your city accommodation after the safari is over, or to the airport so you can catch your trip home.

Best Safari Destinations in Africa for 2024

The Big Five have never been more appealing. Here are our big five safari destinations Africa for 2024 and beyond

kenya & tanzania wildlife safari

“There is something about safari life that makes you forget all your sorrows and feel as if you had drunk half a bottle of champagne—bubbling over with heartfelt gratitude for being alive.” Karen Blixen, of Out of Africa fame, waxed rhapsodic about the wonders of the mighty continent and the appeal of a safari. Most of us have only seen wild elephants and lions in documentaries, but there’s nothing more thrilling than seeing these mighty beasts in their natural habitat. An elephant calf playfully following the herd, an ochre-hued lion gazing intently at wildebeests, a giraffe slowly chewing the branches from an acacia tree. Witnessing these animals on a safari in Africa truly transforms you and your views on conservation and sustainability.

Africa boasts dozens of countries, each with their own cultures, languages and norms, but across this dynamic continent, from north to south, lie wilderness parks, savannahs and velds where the Big Five—lions, elephants, cape buffalos, rhinos and leopards—and other animals live peacefully under the watchful eye of park rangers and conservationists. Check out our top five best safari destinations in Africa for 2024.

Botswana boasts so many natural wonders, it’s hard to pick a place to start when heading here for a safari adventure. The Okavango River Delta, the largest inland delta in the world, offers miles upon miles of myriad waterways, lagoons and grassy flood plains where one can admire mighty beasts from a safe vantage point in an overland truck. Get as close as you can get to African elephants as well as lions and leopards on a Botswana safari .

The Moremi Game Reserve, situated in the heart of the delta, is the perfect campsite for any driving safari as you’ll be rewarded with hippos, Cape buffalos, lions, leopards and the ever elusive Tawny Eagle. If you love elephants as much as we do, Chobe National Park on the border of Botswana and Zambia, boasts a herd population of around 50,000 elephants across the savannah. A Botswana safari is the perfect choice if you want to splurge on a private African safari tour as you get personal chefs and other amenities.

kenya & tanzania wildlife safari

Kenya offers tantalizing glimpses of wildlife from any budget or luxury African safari tour. With more than 800 safari tours to choose from, travelers will find it hard to pick just one. Head to the Masai Mara for gaming drives that ensure you see at least one or two of the Big Five. Tsavo West National Park goes beyond the Big Five and offers rhinos, hippos, cheetahs and plant and bird species that you can’t find anywhere else. This rugged wilderness boasts verdant plains thanks to watering holes such as Mzima Springs.

Mt. Kilimanjaro is the resident icon here and with its snow-capped peaks as a backdrop, you’ll find elephants migrating from one watering hole to another at Amboseli National Park. Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake, is a great vantage point to admire birds as well as hippos among papyrus reeds and flat-topped acacias. After six days of trekking and hiking, relax in your air-conditioned hotel in Nairobi when you’re done.

South Africa

kenya & tanzania wildlife safari

When one thinks of the Big Five, South Africa immediately comes to mind as it’s considered the place to see all of these animals in their natural habitat. A safari in South Africa means you’ll be guaranteed lions, leopards, rhinos, and other wildlife across a five- to eight-day African safari.

From the verdant banks of Lake Saint Lucia in iSimangaliso Wetland Park to the grassy plains of Kruger National Park, South Africa teems with wildlife that is indigenous to the continent. Blyde River Canyon, the third largest of its kind in the world, boasts gorges and greenery like you’ve never seen anywhere else on earth. Expect views of the rivers and valleys laid out like a banquet feast for the senses. Meandering ribbons of blue traverse the landscape and waterfalls are carved into cliff sides, offering a pleasing respite from long days in an overland truck tour.

kenya & tanzania wildlife safari

For African safari tours, Tanzania is always at the top when one thinks of best safari destinations in Africa. With sites such as Ngorongoro Crater, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tarangire National Park, and Serengeti National Park it isn’t not hard to see why. A Tanzania safari is a one-of-a-kind experience thanks to the Great Migration. This annual event sees more than 2 million animals, mainly wildebeests, zebras and giraffes, traverse the golden plains of Serengeti National Park, from Tanzania to nearby Kenya. A safari in Tanzania is always appealing thanks to conservation efforts that preserve the Big Five and other wildlife as well as fertile soil and abundant watering holes.

On any given Tanzania safari, expect iconic wildlife while on a game drive and close-but-not-too close interactions with animals (perfect for anyone looking for an African safari photography tour); it’s one of our favorites because of this personal interaction. Descend into Ngorongoro crater where you might be lucky enough to spot an endangered black rhino or visit a Maasai village to learn about their way of life.

kenya & tanzania wildlife safari

While most people head on an African safari to see the Big Five, there are other animals just as majestic and endangered as the mighty lion. Uganda boasts gorilla safaris so you can do your best Jane Goddall impression watching primates in their native habitat.

Before you get to the primates, travel to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to admire rare white rhinos, which have been saved from the brink of extinction by park rangers here. Track chimpanzees, our closest animal relatives, in Kibale Forest National Park. Then it’s time to hike 4-6 hours to see mountain gorillas.

In Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park you’ll get to spend one hour admiring these majestic beats in the dense foliage. Grab your camera and quietly take photos of these sociable creatures who are often in family groups of more than a dozen, led by an alpha male. These mighty animals can look placid but can be quite intimidating when viewed up close so don’t use your video camera or flash. You’ll leave your Uganda gorilla safari with a new appreciation for primates of all sizes.

Tanzania Safari Reviews

  • Expert Rating 4.8 /5 – 18 Reviews
  • User Rating 4.8 /5 – 1,574 Reviews

You’ll see an abundance of animals when on safari in Tanzania. Elephant, giraffe, buffalo, warthog and hippo are prolific throughout, and in Serengeti you might see several million wildebeest , gazelle and zebra on their annual migration. Predators are common too, especially lion and spotted hyena . You’ll need to go to Ruaha or Nyerere (Selous) National Parks to see the endangered wild dogs . Black rhino is easy to spot in the Ngorongoro Crater, but for an intimate encounter with these safari heavyweights, Mkomazi National Park is hard to beat.

  • More about the wildlife

Safaris in Tanzania focus mostly on morning and afternoon game drives , but there are plenty of opportunities to break it up. Night drives offer a chance to see nocturnal animals. Walking safaris are a great way to learn about little creatures, tracks and plants. And there is no better way to get close to crocodiles and hippos than on a boat safari (a must in Nyerere National Park).

The Dry season (June to October) sees the daytime temperature vary between 20°C/68°F and 30°C/86°F. It’s useful to remember that the higher the altitude, the cooler it will be. The Wet season (November to May) kicks off with the short rains (November to December), followed by a drier interlude and then the long rains (March to May).

  • More about the weather and climate

Wildlife viewing is generally best in the Dry season (June to October). This is also the best time to see the wildebeest migration in Western and Northern Serengeti. January to February is the time when the wildebeest are in Southern Serengeti to have their calves. While some Southern and Western circuit parks are off-limits in the Wet season (November to May), the Northern circuit parks still have productive game drives during this time.

How Much Does an African Safari Cost?

B eing surrounded by giraffes, elephants, lions, zebras, and cheetahs in Africa sounds like a dream come true. But it also sounds expensive. Getting a guide, secluded accommodations, and travel can add up. So, how much does an African safari cost? An African safari can cost between $200 and $1,600 per person per day. Read more on the breakdown of these costs below.

How Much Does an African Safari Cost on Average?

The cost of an African safari will vary depending on where it is, what type of accommodations you get, and what time of year you go.

The most budget-friendly, camping in a tent, will cost about $200 per person per day. The most luxurious African safari can cost up to $1,600 per person per day.

Your African safari cost includes all park admission fees, meals, camping equipment, drinking water, and transportation. They can be a short one-day adventure to a multi-week long excursion. You should account for tipping your guides during your journey. The standard tip is $10 to $20 per person per day.

Things That Impact Your African Safari Cost

You can do many things to cut your African safari cost, while other things will bring the price up. I always tend to focus on what’s important to me and splurge on those aspects. For instance, if you like staying in luxury accommodations, you can splurge on your stay and go during the off-season to save a little bit.

The Length of Your Safari

Obviously, the total cost of your safari will be more the longer your safari is. However, the daily cost is cheaper when you book multiple days under one guide. It’s like buying in bulk at Sam’s Club. You save money in the long run.

The Time of Year You Go

There is a high and low season for African Safaris. The high season is when school is out, and during the dry season. There will be more tourists and higher costs from June to September on most safaris.

The low season is during the rainy season, typically between March and May. The problem with going during the rainy season is animals don’t tend to come out as much. The best time to go on an African safari is during the winter, between January and February.

Where Your Safari Is

The country and park you decide to do your safari in will sway the cost. Doing a safari that goes across multiple countries will cost more while staying in one park is less expensive. South Africa has some of the cheapest safari options because they have more self-drive options, and the parks are built better for these types of excursions.

The Level of Accommodation

You can stay in everything from a camping tent that you could buy at your local outdoor store to permanent yurts with furniture and modern technologies. There are even resort-like stays that you can book for your African safari with pools, villas, and bar and restaurant service.

Your Mode of Transportation

Driving yourself through one of the many parks and reserves is an option sometimes, but it’s not the best option. Your best bet is to book a guided safari because the guides know where all the animals like to go. That way, you’re more likely to see all the wildlife you want.

Less costly guided safaris are also typically in open-roof minivans that they cram people into. The nicer African safari tours use nice jeeps that are entirely open, giving you a chance to see everything wherever you sit.

How Many People Go On The Safari

The more people that come with you, the less your African safari will cost. Most accommodations will hold two people, and some will hold up to five. They will still charge per person for the safari. Even though, it will be less than if you go by yourself because you are sharing one accommodation.

The Best African Safari Destinations

You can go on a safari in different areas of Africa. Each location has unique wildlife that they are known for. You should choose a particular destination depending on what kind of African safari experience you want. Some destinations are also more budget-friendly.

Kenya is the original safari destination. It makes sense, with multiple large game reserves, the great migration, and a slew of cultural experiences to encounter. Some of the best reserves to visit in Kenya are:

  • Masai Mara National Reserve- The most popular park in Kenya.
  • Samburu Game Reserve- Has unique wildlife, like Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffes, and Somali Ostrich .
  • Tsavo National Parks- The largest and most remote park in Kenya.
  • Amboseli National Park- You can see Mount Kilimajaro at this park.
  • Lake Nakuru National Park- Millions of flamingos and white rhinos live here .

There are many great lodges to stay at in and around these parks that will take you on a drive to see the wildlife every day. One that I recommend is Elephant Bedroom Camp. It gets its name because elephants frequent the grounds, making sure to say hello to all of the visitors. You may also see monkeys and Impalas from your luxury tent.

This camp has all of the comforts that you would see at any modern accommodation, including a pool, hot and cold water, electricity, and WIFI. You will get a daily drive through the bush in an open-air vehicle, a picnic lunch, cultural visits, and entertainment by Samburu warriors.

If your dream is to see a gorilla or chimpanzee in the rainforest, then Uganda is the African safari destination for you. It’s different than most other African safaris in the way that the safaris in Uganda are set in rainforests instead of desert land. You can even stop by some amazing waterfalls along your safari. Some parks to check out in Uganda are:

  • Murchison Falls National Park- Has various mammals, like giraffes, buffaloes, and crocodiles.
  • Bwindi Forest National Park- Has the largest population of endangered silverback gorillas.
  • Kibale Forest National Park- Has the highest diversity of primates in Africa.
  • Mgahinga National Park- A large park spanning three countries where endangered silverback gorillas live.
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park- One of two places you can find lions that climb trees.

To be fully immersed in the rainforests that gorillas and chimpanzees roam, stay at Bwindi Lodge . You may get the chance to spot some birds and chimpanzees swinging from the trees in the Bwindi forest right from your room. There’s also a village nearby that has the award-winning Bwindi Bar.

Another advantage of staying at the Bwindi Lodge is you can trek into the forest to see the mountain gorillas and other wildlife instead of having to take a drive. They also have a waterfall trail for you to enjoy the landscape as well.

Botswana is a lesser-known safari destination, so it will feel more exclusive at a smaller cost. Even though it has a variety of landscapes to view different types of wildlife. One of the most popular types of safaris you can do in Botswana is a boat safari, where you can see elephants and hippos. The best parks to see in Botswana are:

  • Okavango Delta- The most popular park in Botswana, famous for boat safaris on the wilding channels.
  • Chobe National Park- You can take a car to this park, making it more accessible. Elephants are a popular group here.
  • The Kalahari- You can find a black-maned lion here during the wet seas on.
  • Makgadikgadi Pans- Find unique African animals across glistening salt pans.
  • Moremi Wildlife Reserve- One of the most remote and diverse wildlife areas of Botswana.

Staying at Abu Camp gets you up close and personal with elephants. Since the camp is next to a lagoon, there is a herd of elephants that call this camp home. There’s even a chance to sleep in the elephant boma for the ultimate experience. You can also experience every type of safari you want, whether it’s a game drive or a boat safari.

Abu Camp has super comfy accommodations with modern furnishings and all the luxuries you would see in any other hotel. There’s a plunge pool to cool off during the day while you wait for your evening safari. Each private canvas tent overlooks the Delta for amazing views.

Tanzania is home to the well-known Serengeti, known for the safaris that explore the great herd. It is also the home to Mount Kilimanjaro, where the most adventurous can summit its peak. This place is basically the home of everything you think of when someone says “Africa.” The most popular safari parks in Tanzania are:

  • Serengeti National Park- The world’s most popular destination for a safari.
  • Ruaha National Park- The largest park in Tanzania with many elephants and giraffes.
  • Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area- Home to the Ngorongoro Crater, where you can find the largest population of lions in the world .
  • Lake Manyara National Park- Home to a massive lake where you can spot animals looking for water during the dry s eason.
  • Mikumi National Park- Mostly flat grassland, making it easy to spot wildlife.

For the best views over the Serengeti day and night, Klein’s Camp is a great place to stay for your safari. It is situated just on the border of the national park, so they are one of the only camps to offer open-air night drives. It is also in the perfect position to watch over the Serengeti from your room.

Klein’s camp feels extremely exclusive because they have 10,000 hectares of privately leased land. You can go offroading, go any time of day, or follow a zebra trail. They will also take you on specialized photography tours and visit the Maasai village to see their unique culture.

South Africa

South Africa is where you want to go to save a few dollars. There is plenty of wildlife, but it has better infrastructure than most other safari destinations. That means there’s more opportunity to do a self-guided tour, which saves you tons. There are also great guided tours too. The best reserves in South Africa are:

  • Kruger National Park- The most popular park in South Africa with the big five.
  • Madikwe Game Reserve- A malaria-free, affordable park with rare wild dogs.
  • Sabi Sands Game reserve- A private reserve bordering Kruger National Park.
  • Phinda Private Game Reserve- Famous for cheetah sightings.
  • Tswalu Kalahari Reserve- The largest private game reserve in South Africa.

If you want to stay in luxury on your South African safari, Loapi Tented Camp gives you the safari aesthetic. However, it comes complete with a butler, fully stocked kitchens, and an environmentally friendly plunge pool. Each of the six accommodations has plenty of space between each, giving you a secluded feel.

Each safari home has its own butler, a private chef to cook all your meals en-suite, a study with wifi, a full bar, and indoor/outdoor showers. You will also get your own safari vehicle with a private tour guide to take you out every evening. If you don’t feel like taking a vehicle out, go horseback instead.
