6-9 day Grand Canyon Rafting Trips

The Grand Canyon National Park (located in Arizona), is one of America's most popular holiday destinations. As the second most popular national park in the US, it's no wonder that tackling the whitewater rapids of Colorado River is on everyone's bucket list. Maintained to perfection by the Colorado National Park Service , the Grand Canyon boasts more than 80 whitewater rapids and some of the country's most beautiful traditional Native American sites.

A 6-9 day Colorado River rafting trip offers something for everyone, whether its thrill-seeking or a simple vacation. Read on for our best 6-9 day Grand Canyon rafting tour options.

Grand Canyon 6-9 Day Rafting Trip Routes

There are multiple 6-day to 9-day Grand Canyon river route options that suit the abilities of any keen rafter or inexperienced vacationer. All three route options have positive and negative aspects — we recommend thoroughly exploring all three alternatives before committing to a trip.

A full Grand Canyon AZ trip can cover up to 280 river miles, starting at Lees Ferry (a vehicle accessible location near Marble Canyon), and concluding at one of three take-out points below. Take-out points will be determined by the outfitter and the trip duration.

Some notable highlights of a full Grand Canyon tour include day trips to hidden sites such as Elves Chasm and Redwall Cavern, or the brilliant turquoise blue water at the confluence of the Little Colorado River. Furthermore, an abundance of thrilling class rated rapids await passengers during this trip, including Lava and Crystal Falls to name a few.

1. Lees ferry (river mile 0) to Whitmore Wash (river mile 188)

This is the shortest full Grand Canyon rafting trip, commencing from Lees Ferry near Marble Canyon. From day one, our outfitter river guides take charge, steering and directing passengers all the way through to Whitemore Wash at river mile 188. Whitmore Wash is one of the most exciting take-out points in the Grand Canyon. At the trip's conclusion, a helicopter will be waiting to transport passengers back to Bar 10 Ranch. This short helicopter ride offers passengers unrivaled views of the towering Grand Canyon walls and the surrounding National Park. From Bar 10 Ranch, passengers can either take a charter plane to Las Vegas NV or be transported back to the South Rim or Marble Canyon to extend their holiday.

2. Lees Ferry (river mile 0) to Diamond Creek Road (river mile 225)

Looking to tackle more whitewater rapids? Consider our full Grand Canyon tour from Lees Ferry to Diamon Creek Road at river mile 225. At trips end, air-conditioned ground transport takes passengers back to Flagstaff airport or Las Vegas.

3. Lees Ferry (river mile 0) to Lake Mead (river mile 280)

Complete the full 280 river miles with a Grand Canyon trip from Lees Ferry to Lake Mead. While it may be more exciting to take a helicopter ride out of the Canyon at Whitmore Wash, we highly recommend considering the full 280 river mile raft trip. The Colorado River saves the best for last, with some of the river's highest-rated rapids lying at the mouth of Lake Mead. Individuals who have come to the Grand Canyon for white water rapids should consider this take-out point.

At river mile 240, passengers will swap from rafts to a jet boat, terminating the river adventure with a thrilling boat ride across the lake. From river mile 280, ground transport will take passengers back to Marble Canyon, the South Rim, or further on to Las Vegas.

All upper Grand Canyon AZ trips begin at Lees Ferry (river mile 0), a vehicle accessible site near the majestic Marble Canyon. From Lees Ferry, river guides will transport all passengers to their rafts, where they'll spend the next 6-7 days cruising through the upper Colorado River.

Some notable sites of the upper Grand Canyon include some of the region's most well-known geological formations. The Kaibab and Toroweap formations are particularly spectacular, showcasing the Grand Canyon's iconic vermillion walls. Another exciting part of the upper Grand Canyon is the 19 class rated rapids, all rated 5 or above on the river rapid scale.

All upper Canyon trips conclude at river mile 88 near Phantom Ranch. At the end of the river trip, passengers are required to hike the 9.5-mile Bright Angel Trail up and out of the Canyon to the South Rim. From the South Rim, passengers can arrange transport back to Marble Canyon or to Las Vegas NV.

The Bright Angel Trail is a strenuous hike that requires passengers to carry their own packs and equipment. It is important that all passengers undertaking this trip are prepared, fit, and healthy before committing to this trip. For more information on the fitness requirements for the Bright Angel Trail hike, contact our team at [email protected] .

A lower Grand Canyon AZ trip usually lasts between 7-9 days, completely surpassing Marble Canyon and the upper Colorado River to begin at the top of the South Rim. Each trip will commence with a 7.5-mile hike down Bright Angel Trail. From there, the Grand Canyon National Park Service maintains three different put-in locations: Pipe Creek Beach, Boat Beach, or Bright Angel Beach. Put-in points will vary depending on the outfitter — river guides will give explicit information on the passenger put-in point during the pre-trip briefing. Highlights of a lower Grand Canyon trip include:

  • Hermit Rapids.
  • Serpentine Rapids.
  • Elves Chasm Waterfall and hiking trail.

A lower Grand Canyon trip will terminate at one of the three take-out points mentioned above; Whitmore Wash, Diamond Creek Road, or Lake Mead. Each of these take-out points offers passengers the option of traveling back to Las Vegas or sticking around and heading back to Marble Canyon or the South Rim to spend more time exploring the Grand Canyon National Park.

Each of our 6-day to 9-day Grand Canyon river adventures offers guests a unique experience. Contact our friendly staff at [email protected] , or give us a call at 888-244-2224  /  928-351-7711 for more information on each of our tour options.

Grand Canyon 6-9 Day Raft Options

Almost all of our 15 outfitters in the Grand Canyon National Park offer 6-day or greater rafting trips on a motorized or non-motorized raft. Raft selection will be dependent on time availability, prior rafting experience, and trip duration. Note that no outfitters offer 6-9 day non-motorized, full Grand Canyon trips. It would be near impossible to raft the entire length of the Colorado River on a non-motorized vessel within this timeframe. Read on for more information about the different raft options available from our outfitters.

Motorized Rafts

The best way to see both the upper and lower Grand Canyon is to take a motorized rafting trip . As the most popular raft type, 11 out of our 15 outfitters offer multi-day motorized full Canyon trips. As the name suggests, a motorized raft is powered by a motor and steered by river guides — a motorized raft does not require passengers to do any paddling. This is great for families with children, for inexperienced rafters, or for passengers who may find paddling too taxing. Motorized rafts are the largest style of raft available, reaching around 35 feet long. This gives them added stability when traveling through tumultuous rapids, giving nervous or inexperienced passengers some peace of mind. While motorized rafts are family-friendly, note that there is a minimum age requirement of 8 years of age for most outfitters.

A motorized rafting trip is the best way to see the entirety of the Grand Canyon in a 6-day to 9-day time frame. If hidden caves, waterfalls, ancient native ruins, and lots of side canyon exploration are a high priority, our motorized 6-day to 9-day river trip is ideal. A motorized raft will cover more river miles per day, meaning less time spent on the water and more time spent exploring notable sites. We also offer 4-day to 5-day upper or lower Grand Canyon motorized river trips for passengers looking to explore one section of the river.

Non-motorized Rafts

Taking a non-motorized rafting trip is a great way to explore one part of the Colorado River more thoroughly and have a more authentic Grand Canyon National Park experience. Non-motorized rafting does not necessarily mean that there will be lots of paddling, with many outfitters offering no-paddle alternatives.

Paddle raft

When people think of whitewater rafting, they usually picture a paddle raft. A paddle raft generally travels at the same speed as the river current (3-4 mph). This means more time spent out on the water and in the rapids, and less time spent on side canyon day trips.

Holding up to 8 passengers, a paddle raft is powered and steered by its passengers all day, every day. This can be exceptionally tiresome, so having some previous rafting experience is highly recommended. Paddle rafting is not everyone's idea of a fun, relaxing holiday, which is why only 4 of our 15 outfitters offer paddle rafting trips of this length. Note that the minimum age requirement for paddle boats is 12 years of age.

A dory raft is composed of hardwood, making it more responsive and particularly agile when taking on rapids. A dory raft usually takes around 5 passengers, traveling down the Colorado River at a similar pace to a paddle raft. However, unlike the paddle raft, river guides will be steering and paddling from the center of the dory raft for the duration of the river adventure.

Dory rafts are not a common choice for 6-9 day trips, with only 5 out of our 15 outfitters offering dory trips. Often, dory rafts will accompany oar-boat trips in order to give passengers a feel for two different raft types. This addition of other raft styles on a raft trip will depend on the outfitter and is not guaranteed. The minimum age requirement for dory trips is 10 years old and above.

Oar-Powered Rafts

Oar rafts are powered and steered by river guides who sit in the center of the raft with two long oars. Oar-boats are much smaller than a motorized raft, giving passengers a more intimate river experience. As the second most popular raft type for Grand Canyon 6-day to 9-day Colorado River trips, it's an available option from 12 out of our 15 outfitters. Unfortunately, we do not offer full Grand Canyon oar-boat trips for this length of time.

Our oar raft trips are an excellent alternative for passengers looking to have a leisurely river experience without missing out on the best sites of the upper or lower Grand Canyon. Oar boats travel at around the same speed as a paddle raft, giving passengers plenty of time on the river to take in the scenery or learn the region's history from their river guides. Passengers may even take a turn at paddling the raft. However, this is not guaranteed. The minimum age requirement for oar rafts is between 10-12 years of age — check with our outfitters for more information on exact age restrictions before booking.

Hybrid Rafts

A hybrid Grand Canyon river trip simply refers to trips that combine both oar and paddle rafts. This is an excellent happy medium for passengers who may wish to give a paddle raft a try, but do not want to commit to paddling for the duration of a multi-day trip. Each of our hybrid trips consists of approximately 4 oar-powered rafts and 1 paddle raft, with passengers rotating between each boat every day. Passengers don't need prior rafting experience to undertake a hybrid raft trip.

Hybrid Grand Canyon river trips are only offered by 4 out of our 15 outfitters, so be sure to book well in advance. The minimum age requirement for a hybrid trip is 12 years old.

Top 5 FAQ: 6-9 Day Rafting Trips

How much does it cost to go rafting in the grand canyon.

The cost of a Grand Canyon trip will ultimately depend on trip length, route selection, and raft type. A 6-9 day rafting trip can cost anywhere between $2,085 and $4275. Read on for more information on specific trip quotes.

Motorized Trip

When passengers don't want to miss out on seeing the best sites of the upper and lower Canyon but don't have the time to do two separate tours, we suggest a motorized full Grand Canyon trip. A motorized 6-8 day Grand Canyon trip costs between $2,085 - $2,962. This cost includes expenses such as food and camping equipment.

Non-Motorized Trip

When time isn't an issue, a non-motorized Grand Canyon rafting trip is a much more authentic way to see the Colorado River. Non-motorized rafts allow for a better feel of the river currents and a more intimate river experience. The cost of a non-motorized trip includes food, camping, and activity expenses.

  • Upper Canyon (6-7 days): $1,655 - $3,111.
  • Lower Canyon (7-9 days): $2,280 - $4,275.

For more information or a specific quote for a 6-9 day Grand Canyon river rafting experience, contact one of our friendly team at  [email protected] , or give us a call at 888-244-2224  /  928-351-7711 .

Is Upper or Lower Grand Canyon rafting better?

When limited by time, exploring one section of the Colorado River may be the best option to see the most of the river without having to rush. Experienced whitewater rafters may have a preferred section of the river. However, both the upper and lower Grand Canyon has plenty to offer in terms of thrilling rapids and awe-inspiring sights.

The best section of the Colorado River depends on what our passengers are looking to get out of the trip. The upper Grand Canyon offers some of the best geological sites of the region — with more varied views, there is a better opportunity to see a wider range of geological structures. Another highlight of the upper Grand Canyon is the 'Roaring 20's' rapids. This quick succession of whitewater rapids is situated at the commencement of an upper Grand Canyon tour. With some of the highest-rated rapids of the Colorado Rover occurring in this region, it's guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser.

Looking for a more action-packed rafting adventure? The lower Grand Canyon offers some of the wildest whitewater rapids in the Colorado River and an abundance of secret, hidden caves. Not only is this section of the river longer, but there is also the option of a helicopter ride out of the Canyon at the trip's conclusion.

What is the best tour of the Grand Canyon?

The best tour of the Grand Canyon will depend on previous experience with whitewater rafting and what our passengers are looking to gain from our trips.

As an experienced whitewater rafter, taking an upper or lower non-motorized Grand Canyon trip is the ultimate way to get the most out of the experience. Not only is there a chance to paddle through some of the world's toughest whitewater rapids, but our Canyon rafting trips also allow for a more thorough exploration of one portion of the river.

Alternatively, individuals who are not keen on paddling or who have limited experience with rafting may opt for a motorized full Canyon tour. This presents the perfect opportunity to spend more time exploring the side canyons and less time paddling in the river. Furthermore, there is still the thrill of riding through the whitewater rapids, just without any of the paddling responsibility.

Can you raft the entire Grand Canyon?

Yes! it is entirely possible to raft the entire Grand Canyon via the Colorado River. However, we only offer 6-9 day full Grand Canyon raft holidays on a motorized raft. Rafting the entire Grand Canyon is a once in a lifetime opportunity and is the best way to make the most of the ancient ruins, hidden waterfalls, and the natural beauty of the region.

Will I have to hike during a 6-9 day Grand Canyon trip?

Each upper and lower Grand Canyon trip begins or ends with a hike on the Bright Angel Trail. This 9-mile hike is no easy feat. However, anyone who is fit and healthy shouldn't find this hike too unachievable. If tackling a hike isn't an option, we recommend taking a full Grand Canyon trip. Rather than starting or ending the tour with a hike on the Bright Angel Trail, the trip begins at Lees Ferry and ends at one of the three aforementioned take-out points. Each of these take-out points has a no hike-out obligation.

Raft the Colorado River

From the peaks of the Rockies to the depths of Grand Canyon and beyond, the Colorado River is the West’s most iconic river. At more than 1,400 miles in length—passing through seven U.S. States and 11 national parks and monuments—it’s not only the lifeline of the Colorado Plateau, the Colorado River is one of the best whitewater rafting destinations in the world.

Inhabited for centuries by the Navajo, Mojave, Ute, and many other tribes, as well as their native predecessors, the Colorado River Basin provided rich grounds for hunting, fishing, and gathering. The lush riparian areas helped native communities flourish, and the wide flows allowed them to travel up and downstream.

It wasn’t until John Wesley Powell’s harrowing 1869 exploration of a large section of the river that the hidden canyons and raging rapids of the Colorado were put on the map. After that, it didn’t take long for other explorers and early river-running pioneers to follow in Powell’s footsteps.

Today, despite dams and development restraining the free flow of the river in many places, much of the Colorado’s wild and rugged beauty remains and is now protected. Though flows are carefully regulated, Colorado River rafting adventures consistently provide world-class whitewater and the trip of a lifetime.

The guides made this trip so special, worthwhile, and memorable. Having booked the 17-day Grand Canyon trip on only two week's notice, I truly wasn't sure what to expect and decided to come into the adventure with an open mind and "just say yes" attitude. I was shocked to experience the level of hospitality provided 24/7 by the guides. Even more impressive was the guides' passion and expert knowledge of the Grand Canyon's geology, anthropology, and rafting history. OARS Grand Canyon guest 2022

Frequently Asked Questions

Have more questions?

Where is the best Colorado River rafting?

As the Colorado River flows through southeastern Utah and Arizona, it snakes its way through some of the West’s most dramatic canyon country, including Canyonlands National Park and Grand Canyon National Park.

Some of the best Colorado River rafting opportunities are easily accessible from the adventure hubs of Moab, UT, and Flagstaff, AZ, including three of the most stunning and exciting sections of whitewater: Westwater Canyon , Cataract Canyon , and Grand Canyon . On all three of these white water rafting trips, fascinating geology, incredible camping opportunities and incredible hiking opportunities await.

How long are rafting trips on the Colorado River?

Depending on how much time you have, OARS offers a variety of rafting trips on the Colorado River ranging anywhere from 2 to 18 days.

For Westwater Canyon, 2- to 3-day options are the norm, with 3 days providing a more laid-back experience and more exploring. Slightly longer trips ranging from 4 to 6 days are available through Cataract Canyon, where you can enjoy incredible backstage access to Canyonlands National Park .

The longest Colorado River rafting trips available are full Grand Canyon rafting and dory expeditions , which float the entire 280-mile stretch of the Colorado River from Lees Ferry to Pearce Ferry and typically last 14 to 18 days. Partial canyon trips normally range between 6 to 12 days.

Does OARS offer day trips?

OARS doesn’t currently offer 1-day rafting trips on the Colorado River. If you’re short on time, the Moab Daily run or the shorter, 12-mile Westwater Canyon trip, are popular day trips for adventure seekers.

What are the rapids on the Colorado River rated?

Most of the rapids on the Colorado River are rated on the standard scale of I-VI. Everyone from beginners and families to thrill seekers and seasoned river runners can find a Colorado River white water adventure that caters to their experience level.

River ratings and adventure levels on the Colorado vary by section, and even the water level or season. For example, Cataract Canyon trips are generally considered Class III-IV, however at peak flows in the spring, some of the more technical rapids like the Big Drops are as big or bigger than the most formidable rapids in Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon rapids are rated on a different scale of 1 to 10. Flat water is 1, while tough rapids like Lava Falls or Crystal can be rated 10 at certain water levels. A 10 rating in the canyon is roughly equivalent to a Class V in the standard river scale.

What is the minimum age to raft the Colorado?

OARS offers multi-day river trips on the Colorado that cater to ages 7 and up, depending on the trip and water levels. Refer to trip pages for minimum age requirements for each adventure.

River ratings, other inherent risks of backcountry travel, and even an individual’s adventure threshold and activity level should be considered when deciding if a person is ready for a river trip.

When is the best time to go rafting on the Colorado River?

Guided rafting trips on the Colorado River are generally offered April through October, but conditions can vary greatly depending on when and where you decide to go. The best time to raft the Colorado River really depends on individual preferences, like desired adventure level, boat preference, and other factors, like threshold for extreme weather both hot and cold.

Spring Trips

Trips early in the commercial rafting season offer fun, average flows for rafters, typically during April and early May before the spring melt begins in full force. Wildflowers are blooming, waterfalls are gushing, conditions are ideal for hiking, and there are fewer people on the water. However, paddlers need to be prepared for frigid water and unpredictable weather that can go from warm and sunny to raining, or even snowing, on the same day.

Later in spring, often mid-May through mid-June, snowmelt runoff from the Rocky Mountains adds abundant amounts of water to the river. “High-water trips” on the more free-flowing and untamed stretches of the Colorado River, like Cataract Canyon , during these peak flows are best for thrill seekers and the most adventurous rafters. A raft flip or cold water swim should be anticipated. At the same time, rapids in narrower sections of the Colorado River, like Westwater Canyon, tend to wash out completely during high water. As a result, OARS doesn’t offer Westwater trips during the peak-flow window, since it can be a disappointing experience for paddlers.

Summer/Early-Fall Trips

As Colorado River flows return to normal by late June to early-July most seasons, both Cataract Canyon and Westwater Canyon offer splashy, reliable flows for rafters into the late summer/early fall.

Westwater Canyon rafting trips typically conclude by the end of September, since the water levels can become more challenging for rafts to navigate later in the season, while Cataract Canyon trips are often available into mid-October, depending on the outfitter.

During this time, we’re generally able to offer a wider selection of crafts to try out on calmer stretches of the river, like stand-up paddleboards or inflatable kayaks, and the heat of summer is a welcome invitation to swim in the brisk Colorado. Rafters aren’t immune to unpredictable weather in the summer, though. During monsoon season (July through September), rafters can anticipate frequent afternoon thunderstorms.

Grand Canyon River Trip Considerations

The best time to raft Grand Canyon is a bit of a different scenario. Before the Colorado River flows through Grand Canyon, it hits Lake Powell. As a result, Grand Canyon rafting trips rely on dam-controlled water releases from the upstream reservoir all year long. This means rafters won’t necessarily see drastic changes in water levels during spring snowmelt season, but the big legendary whitewater that Grand Canyon is known for is guaranteed throughout the Colorado River rafting season. Arguably, the months of April and October are considered the best time for Grand Canyon rafting trips, because there are fewer people in the canyon, temperatures are milder, and the conditions are ideal for side hikes and exploring.

Don’t miss our comprehensive guide to Grand Canyon river trips , which is full of expert advice and other factors to keep in mind before choosing the right Grand Canyon rafting or dory trip.

What can I expect on a multi-day river trip?

The beauty of a multi-day rafting adventure is that no two trips are ever the same. What you can expect on a multi-day river trip with OARS, however, is a high standard of customer service, top-notch equipment, delicious meals, and some of the best guides in the industry providing you with a trip of a lifetime. Check out our Multi-day River Trip FAQs for more about what to expect on a river trip.

Why Colorado River rafting with OARS?

OARS has been offering Colorado River rafting trips since 1969 and was selected as the first exclusively oar-powered rafting outfitter authorized to run trips on the Colorado River through Grand Canyon in 1972. Since then, our offerings have expanded to include some of the most iconic stretches of river throughout the West and the world.

With 50-plus years in the river running business, we’ve earned a reputation for maintaining the gold standard for river trips by hiring only the best guides in the industry, using the best equipment, and maintaining the kind of personal service that can only come from a second generation, family-owned and operated business.

In addition, Colorado River rafting trips carry you through some of the most pristine dark skies in the United States . Out here, the Milky Way is more vibrant than you imagined possible.

Whitewater Rafting on the Colorado River

Born in an alpine meadow high in Rocky Mountain National Park, the Colorado River cascades down through the mountains and canyons of the western Rockies, gathering strength and tributaries along the way. Our rafting trips on the Colorado begin just east of the Utah-Colorado border, and flow south with the river all the way through Grand Canyon.

Hop aboard a three-day trip through Ruby-Horsethief and Westwater canyons. Try an easy excursion past the Fisher Towers, just outside the town of Moab, Utah. Follow the Colorado into Canyonlands National Park and Cataract Canyon. And when you’ve done all those, discover the famed Grand Canyon, the biggest canyon of them all. From top to bottom, there’s a Colorado River rafting trip for everyone.

2–3 Day Westwater Canyon

Colorado River rafting trips don’t get much better than this! Short but sweet, our Westwater Canyon whitewater rafting trip is a perfect introduction to multi-day rafting. The Colorado River drops over Class II–IV rapids, cutting through the same ancient black rock found at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

5–6 Day Cataract Canyon

The Colorado River’s most notorious whitewater ride lies deep within Canyonlands National Park. Cataract Canyon has it all: mesmerizing stretches of calm water, towering canyon walls, epic rapids, ancient ruins and rock art, brilliant dark skies free of light pollution, and fascinating side canyons. Holiday’s oar-powered, motor-less rafts provide both a relaxing and a thrilling ride into corners of the national park that are only accessible via the river.

3 Day Ruby Horsethief Intro to Rafting

If you're new to camping, river life, or both, this trip is for you! Known for its amazing scenery, calm water, and fun side hikes, Ruby Horsethief is the perfect trip to try out overnight rafting. Our guides handle all the logistics, ensuring you are safe and comfortable so you can just relax and have fun. Lounge on a raft, paddle an inflatable kayak, or float on a stand up paddle board all day. Eat like royalty for three days, and sleep under the Milky Way for two nights. You'll leave this trip feeling rejuvenated and excited to get back on the river!

5–9 Day Grand Canyon

The very name “Grand Canyon” brings to mind unparalleled beauty and world-famous whitewater. This granddaddy of whitewater rafting in Arizona boasts 150 rapids, including Lava Falls and Crystal Rapid: awesome to behold, and exhilarating to run. More than rapids, however, Grand Canyon has an incredible variety of hikes, geology, and history to explore. Sparkling clear springs gush from cracks in the cliffs, forming lush oases of ferns, pools, and wildflowers. Each of the Earth’s climatic zones is represented in Grand Canyon, from alpine forests on the rim to the Sonoran desert ecosystem in the lower elevations. Opt for a non-motorized Grand Canyon trip and see the Colorado River’s most famous canyon at its own pace.

2 Day Fisher Towers Youth Trips

Just minutes outside of Moab, Utah, our Fisher Towers trip features some of the best scenery in eastern Utah. The maroon towers are a classic red rock feature, sitting in stark contrast to the sometimes-snowy, 12,000-foot peaks of the La Sal Mountains. Our two day trips provide a gentle introduction to whitewater rafting, including plenty of calm, flat water, and several fun but mellow rapids. Great for inflatable kayaking and youth groups.

Featured Review:

“We had the most amazing river trip during HIGH water in Cataract Canyon. Our guides were INCREDIBLE! Brin was especially knowledgeable about the geology and history of Cataract Canyon- from the Ancient Puebloans to John Wesley Powell to today’s Colorado River issues relating to the West’s need for water.

The overall camaraderie, competence, and skill that all the guides possessed made our trip along with the absolutely spectacular scenery. I felt nervous about the high water but had total confidence in the guides. Their joy after successfully running Cataract at 48,000 cfs was infectious and truly enhanced my experience.

The river trip was restorative, peaceful, high energy, and absolutely extraordinary. I cannot wait to return for another trip!”

Motor or Oar: Types of Rafting Trips

One of the biggest factors to consider when choosing your Grand Canyon river trip is the type of craft you would like to take down river. We have organized our offerings into two categories: motor trips and oar trips. Each offers a different experience, yet the two main deciding factors for most of our clients are age restrictions and length of trip.

Age Restrictions:  A motor trip requires children to be at least 8 years of age. A non-motor trip requires children to be at least 12.

Length of Trip:  A motor trip travels approximately twice as fast as a non- motorized trip. This means that you can travel the length of the canyon in as little as 6 days on a motor boat and as few as 12 days by oar boat.

No matter what type of boat you choose, remember: It’s the Grand Canyon that makes the experience!

break down of different Grand Canyon rafting trip types

why we love motor boats

More Availability The higher number of motor trip launches increases our odds for finding availability and getting people on the river. Shorter Trip Length A motorized trip allows you to see more of the Canyon in a shorter period of time. Accessibility Motor boats have opened the Canyon to people of all ages and ability levels.

All motor boats are powered by environmentally friendly, quiet, four-stroke outboard motors. A guide stands at the back of the boat to operate the motor.

motorized boats

Grand Canyon Motor Raft: C-craft

C-Craft Carries up to 14 passengers and 2 guides. The boat has an open deck that runs down the center and is the largest motorboat in Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon Motor Raft: S-rig

S-Rig Carries up to 14 passengers and 2 guides. Generally, guests sit on decks that encircle a large duffel pile in the middle.

Grand Canyon Motor Raft: J-rig

J-Rig Carries up to 14 passengers and 2 guides. The seating configuration is outfitter specific

why we love oar boats

Absolute Quiet Aside from the occasional squeak of an oarlock, the ride on an oar raft or dory offers the opportunity to hear the subtle sounds of nature. Closeness to the River Oar and Paddle passengers sit closer to the water, which lends itself to the simple pleasure of feeling the river run through your fingers as you travel downstream. Slower Pace Because non-motorized boats travel at half the speed of motorboats, there are many opportunities to go with the flow, sit back, and soak in the Canyon.

All non-motorized craft are either powered by a guide who rows an oar boat or who captains a team of participants on a paddle raft.

Dory Boat Carries up to 4 guests and 1 guide. The guide is responsible for navigating the boat. This is a classic wooden, hard hulled boat. There are only a handful of dory trips offered in Grand Canyon.

When is the best time to raft in Grand Canyon? Every season in the Grand Canyon comes with its own beauties and challenges. April and May have cooler temperatures, which require extra layers, but allow for longer hikes while the wildflowers are in bloom. Spring can bring strong winds. June through August are the hottest and busiest months to raft Grand Canyon with temperatures ranging from 95-115°F. Monsoon season starts in July and goes through August, bringing afternoon clouds and rain showers to cool things off. As the rafting season winds down in September and October, you can expect cooler weather, longer hikes, and shorter days.

Inner Canyon temperatures are not the same as temperatures on the rim!

The Bright Angel trail runs from the South Rim 7.5 miles down to the Colorado River with an elevation change of 4500 feet. You must be prepared to hike for 4 to 8 hours carrying your own  personal pack and water . Elements such as heat and elevation will have an impact.  Hiking into the canyon  is equally as demanding as hiking out of the canyon and can be more difficult for people with knee issues.

If you answer yes to the following questions, dust off your hiking boots and get ready!

• Are you in good health? • Are you in good physical shape? (Do you exercise regularly? Can you walk ten miles without issue?) • Are you capable of carrying a backpack weighing 20-30 lbs. and at least two liters of water? • Are you willing to take the hike seriously: Train for the hike, pack lightly and eat and drink properly during the hike?

If you are more than a little overweight, out of shape, have a heart condition, joint problems, asthma or are afraid of heights, it would be wise to consider a rafting trip that does not require a hike in or out of the Canyon. The experience of rafting the Colorado through Grand Canyon is one that will touch something within and leave a lasting impression on your heart. We believe we are connecting you to much more than just a vacation. We’ve been doing this for 30 years and we love it. We hope this guide has helped you understand your options. If you’re ready to take that next step or if you have questions, please feel free to give us a call – we’ll guide you through!

Save Time We do the legwork for you, contacting ALL 15 Grand Canyon rafting outfitters and presenting you with a list of available trips that fit your time-frame and budget. Have us find available dates that meet your needs. Grand Canyon Insiders Get the real advantage; many of us are Grand Canyon river guides, we know ALL the trips, we’re local, and we have longstanding relationships with ALL the outfitters. Regional Expertise We’ll not only find you a rafting trip, we’ll help you get there by arranging local transportation and lodging (something most outfitters won’t do). Fee Free Service Our commission is paid by the outfitters we represent; the price of your expedition is the same as booking direct. When you’re ready to take the next step – give us a call and we’ll find a Grand Canyon rafting trip that is right for you.  928.526.4575
