‘A New Day has Dawned’ as Celebrity Edge Becomes First Cruise Ship to Sail From a U.S. Port in 15 Months

New-luxury ship Celebrity Edge departs from Ft. Lauderdale on June 26, led by First American Female Captain , Kate McCue

LAUDERDALE (June 26, 2021)– “ #HopeFloats. Today marks the rebirth of our company and our industry, as our beautiful Celebrity Edge sets sail on a new-luxury experience that will - once again - feed peoples’ love of travel.” Those were the inspirational words tweeted from Celebrity Cruises’ President and CEO, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo today, as the exquisite Celebrity Edge prepared to sail from Ft. Lauderdale at 6.00pm ET, becoming the first cruise ship to sail from a U.S. port in more than a year.

What seems only fitting, now, 15 months after being at the helm of history for the first all-female bridge and officer team sailing in March 2020 and the last sailing before the industry was put on pause, Captain Kate McCue, the first and still only American female to captain a major cruise ship, now leads the fleet – and the industry – back into operation from Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades. The ship set sails for Mexico and the Bahamas.

Rarely has a seven-night cruise of the Caribbean come with such symbolism and hope, but there is no underestimating that this is an historic moment for the brand as it cruises back to normal. Celebrity Edge was given the green light - and the honor - to be the first ship back in the water, having met all new standards for providing a healthy and safe cruise experience for its guests and crew.

“This is a momentous sailing and one that we have been preparing for a long time. It’s not only a huge honor to be the first ship back in the water, leading the industry in the long-awaited return to U.S.-based cruising, it’s also an incredible achievement and testament to the tireless efforts of our shoreside team and onboard crew”, said Richard Fain, Chairman of the Royal Caribbean Group, the parent company of Celebrity Cruises. “Travel is a powerful catalyst for positive change in our world. There’s nothing more enriching in life than exposing yourself to new cultures, sights, and experiences… and nothing more luxurious than doing it on board a Celebrity cruise ship,” he added. “All that’s left to say is welcome aboard.”

“The significance of this moment is not lost on anyone on our team or the industry. We have longed for this day, not only because it represents a return to service and doing what we love to do most, but because we know that for many the return of cruising is a symbol of the world’s return to normalcy,” said Brian Abel, Senior Vice President of Hotel Operations for Celebrity Cruises. “For too long, we’ve had to encourage one another with dreams of ‘someday’ returning to being together, again. Now, as the world opens up, and we can gather and enjoy our families and friends on an amazing cruise vacation, ‘someday’ is here.”

Named ‘ one of the world’s greatest places’ by Time Magazine , Celebrity Edge is widely regarded as the most innovative cruise ship on earth. The ship’s onboard experience stands apart from anything else at sea, creating an exciting modern cruising experience with offerings like the incredible Magic Carpet® , soaring cantilevered above the sea and transformational accommodations like hyper-lux two-story villas with private plunge pools.

Inaugurated in 2018, Celebrity Edge’s unique outward-facing design breaks from traditional shipbuilding. Aboard, guests feel more connected with the sea and the places they visit, whether it’s sipping cocktails from the sundeck of The Retreat , a private oasis within the ship, or taking in the stunning vistas from the botanical Rooftop Garden. The ship’s amenities and views will infuse new life into passengers that have longed to travel and see the world once again.

“The week after our entire industry was grounded, last March, I started a #HopeFloats tradition of blowing the ship’s horn every evening to let the world know that not only were we safe, but we were thinking of those at home and hoping the same for them, said Captain McCue.  “Now, the sound of a ship’s horn symbolizes rising above from any hardship. The entire crew is so happy to be back and we can’t wait to welcome our guests aboard!”

With today’s sailing, eight of the 14 ships within the Celebrity Cruises’ fleet now have plans to return to sailing in 2021 and are ready to take guests to breathtaking destinations, from the Caribbean to Europe, Alaska and the Galapagos, including:

  • The magnificent Celebrity Millennium led North America’s return to service as the first ship to sail in the Caribbean on June 5 from St. Maarten.
  • Celebrity Apex , the newest addition to the Celebrity fleet, made her world debut in Athens on June 19 , with seven-night sailings to the Greek Isles. The cruise marked a historic return to Greece for the company, which was founded there 33 years ago.
  • Celebrity Silhouette prepares to summer in Southampton, UK beginning July 3 and offer stunning cruises of the British Isles and coastline.
  • Beginning July 4 , the luxurious, state-of-the-art mega-yacht, Celebrity Flora® , will resume sailing the magical Galapagos Islands. She will be followed soon after by the award-winning Celebrity Xpedition® and intimate 16-passenger Celebrity Xploration® on July 24, and September 18, respectively.
  • And, Celebrity’s long-awaited return to the incomparable natural wonders of Alaska begin July 23 .

Healthy at Sea Celebrity Cruises has established new health and safety measures in accordance with guidance from public health authorities, government agencies, and its own team of health and safety experts to provide guests with the peace of mind to fully enjoy their voyage.

All Celebrity ships will sail with a vaccinated crew. U.S. guests ages 16 and older must be fully vaccinated and, as of August 1, 2021, all U.S. guests ages 12 and older must be fully vaccinated. In Florida, vaccinations are strongly recommended. Requirements for Non-U.S. guests vary and more details can be found by visiting https://www.celebritycruises.com/healthy-at-sea .

These measures will evolve in keeping with current public health standards. Guests are encouraged to regularly check the guidance on all health and safety measures across the entire Celebrity Cruises vacation experience can be found at https://www.celebritycruises.com/healthy-at-sea .

Wonder Returns Simplifying the luxury vacation experience, Wi-Fi, drinks, and tips are now ‘ Always Included SM ’ on every Celebrity cruise. And, Celebrity’s “ Cruise with Confidence ” program provides flexible cancellations and the best price guarantees.

The 13-ship-and-counting fleet contains 4 different ship series', each offering guests unique cruising experiences. The Millennium Series (comprising of ships including Millennium, Infinity, Summit, and Constellation) is made for food-lovers, with a Michelin-starred chef overseeing all of the distinctive dining options like Sushi on Five, Tuscan Grille, and Qsine. Nearly 71 Million People Expected to Travel over July 4th Week

This year’s extended independence day forecast exceeds pre-pandemic numbers, sets new record.

celebrity cruise 1 july

WASHINGTON, DC (June 20, 2024) – AAA projects 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Independence Day holiday travel period*. For the first time, AAA looked at the entire July 4 th week, plus the Saturday before and the Sunday after the holiday. This year’s projected number of travelers for that time period is a 5% increase compared to 2023 and an 8% increase over 2019.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We anticipate this July 4 th week will be the busiest ever with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019.”

Share of Travelers by Mode pie chart and Number of Travelers by Mode table

AAA projects a record 60.6 million people will travel by car over Independence Day week – that’s an additional 2.8 million travelers compared to last year. This year’s number also surpasses 2019 when 55.3 million people traveled by car over July 4 th week. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Dallas, Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are the cities displaying the highest rental demand during the holiday week. The busiest pick-up days are projected to be Friday, June 28, Saturday, June 29, and Wednesday, July 3.

Gas prices are lower than last year when the national average was $3.53. Pump prices will likely continue going down leading up to Independence Day.  At that point, they will likely level off and remain relatively stable until after Labor Day, similar to last year.  An important caveat is hurricane season – underway now – which could affect gas prices should a storm negatively impact Gulf Coast oil production and refining centers.

The number of air travelers is also expected to set a new record. AAA projects 5.74 million people will fly to their July 4 th destinations. That’s an increase of nearly 7% compared to last year and a 12% increase over 2019. AAA booking data shows domestic airfare is 2% cheaper this Independence Day week compared to last year, and the average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is $800. Airports will be packed throughout the week. AAA recommends arriving 2 hours early, reserving parking ahead of time, and traveling with carry-on luggage versus checked bags to save time and money.

More than 4.6 million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. This category is seeing an increase of 9% compared to last year, but this year’s number is shy of 2019’s figure of 4.79 million. Cruising continues its remarkable post-pandemic comeback. This time of year, Alaska cruises are in high demand, making Seattle and Anchorage top domestic destinations. Cruise travelers are also finding deals this summer. With new ships coming onto the market – and going for a premium – some cruise lines have been offering targeted discounts to fill older inventory for remaining cabins.

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says the worst times to travel by car before and on July 4 th are between 2pm and 7pm. Drivers should hit the road in the morning, and travelers returning on Monday, July 8 th should avoid rush hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3 rd , as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7th, as they return,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “R oad trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.”

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

For example, Atlanta routes = ET and Los Angeles routes = PT.

  Top Destinations

This July 4 th week, travelers are cooling off in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska – and by the ocean! Seattle, Vancouver, and Anchorage are top destinations because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Beaches in South Florida, Honolulu, Punta Cana, and Barcelona are in high demand. Historical sites in European cities like London, Rome, Dublin, Paris, and Athens are also popular. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Family Road Trip Checklist

With road trips expected to set a new record this July 4 th week, AAA teamed up with Chicco to share safety tips for families with young children.

  • Check car seat fit. Before you hit the road, check your child’s weight and height to ensure they’re in the right seat and mode of use – especially when it comes to transitioning from rear to forward-facing. Children should remain rear-facing as long as possible for better protection of their head, neck, and spine in the event of a crash. If you are unsure which car seat is best for your child, Chicco offers a car seat comparison guide.
  • Double check car seat installation. Even if your car seat is already installed in the car, it’s worth checking everything is safe and secure. An easy at-home way to do this is with the “inch test.” Simply grab the seat at the car seat belt path and pull side to side and front to back. If it moves more than one inch in any direction, uninstall and start over until a secure fit is achieved. For any questions, utilize the car seat manual, QR codes, or online resources like those offered by Chicco.
  • Secure loose items in the car. Take time to organize and clean up your car before hitting the road. Storage organizers that secure to the back of the driver and passenger seats are simple solutions to make sure everything has a spot, especially loose items that can become projectiles in case of a sudden stop.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected. Pack an emergency kit with first-aid supplies, water, snacks, blankets, jumper cables, and flares. Make sure your phone is fully charged – and keep a charger in the car – to call AAA or request roadside assistance digitally if your battery dies, you lock yourself out, or you need a tow.
  • Map your route. Families with young children should plan for frequent and longer stops along the way. Map out your route ahead of time with AAA TripTik and browse hotels, restaurants, and other activities along the way on AAA Trip Canvas.
  • Bring entertainment. Make sure to place toys and books within reach to keep children entertained. If your kids use tablets or other electronics, make sure the devices are fully charged and pre-downloaded before leaving home. Another fun way to get the whole family excited for the road trip is to create a family playlist of everyone’s favorite songs!

Holiday Forecast Methodology

Travel Forecast

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of May 27, 2024.

Because AAA forecasts focus on domestic leisure travel only, comparisons to TSA passenger screening numbers should not be made. TSA data includes all passengers traveling on both domestic and international routes. Additionally, TSA screens passengers each time they enter secured areas of the airport, therefore each one-way trip is counted as a passenger tally. AAA focuses on person-trips, which include the full round-trip travel itinerary. As a result, direct comparisons of AAA forecast volumes and daily TSA screenings represent different factors.

*Independence Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Independence Day holiday travel period is defined as the nine-day period from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7. Historically, the Independence Day holiday period included only one weekend. This is the first year the Independence Day holiday travel period is a longer timeframe with two weekends included.

Tom Cruise’s daughter drops last name; ‘Shrek 5,’ ‘Donkey’ movies coming: Buzz

Tom Cruise’s daughter drops last name

Tom Cruise’s daughter is no longer going by Suri Cruise. Page Six reports the 18-year-old child of the Syracuse-born actor and Katie Holmes was listed in her high school graduation program as “Suri Noelle,” dropping her famous dad’s last name. According to E! News , Holmes attended the ceremony at the United Palace Theatre in New York City, while Cruise did not. The “Top Gun” star allegedly severed ties with Suri since she and Holmes would not participate in the Church of Scientology, while he does maintain a public relationship with his kids Isabella, 31, and Connors, 29, with ex-wife Nicole Kidman. Holmes has not said what Suri’s future plans are, but she may be headed off to college after appearing with a Carnegie Mellon sweatshirt in a TikTok video earlier this month. “I’m very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent,” the former “Dawson’s Creek” actress told Glamour last year. “She’s an incredible person.”

‘Shrek 5,’ ‘Donkey’ movies coming

Eddie Murphy says “Shrek 5″ has begun production and a “Donkey” spinoff movie is also on the way. “We started doing [’Shrek 5′] months ago,” Murphy said in a new interview with Collider . “I did this. I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. ‘Shrek’ is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a ‘Shrek,’ and we’re doing a Donkey [movie].” Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz are expected to return as Shrek and Fiona in the new sequel, but it’s unclear who might join Murphy in the Donkey film.

This popular cruise line is raising gratuity prices this month

celebrity cruise 1 july

Celebrity Cruises guests may pay a steeper bill next time they sail.

The cruise line is raising its automatic gratuity rates later this month. Charges for standard staterooms will increase from $17.50 to $18 per passenger, per day, while those in Concierge Class and AquaClass staterooms will pay $18.50 per guest each day, up from $18.

Guests in The Retreat suites will pay $23 per passenger, per day, an increase from $21. The changes will take effect July 11.

“The change is in keeping with industry standards and directly recognizes both the exceptional work by our crew to deliver unforgettable vacations every day and the friendly, yet, tailored relaxed luxury experience that Celebrity is known for,” a Celebrity spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Planning a cruise?: Here are the documents and costs to keep in mind

The cruise line automatically adds gratuities to passengers’ onboard accounts, unless they have an Excluded Booking that include stateroom and restaurant service gratuities and a 20% beverage package tip, according to the line’s website . That applies to Celebrity’s All Included rate, as well as AquaClass staterooms and The Retreat suites.

The changes come as other cruise lines have raised prices in the wake of inflation and the industry's continued recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic . Many have increased gratuity prices , and lines such as MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line have also increased fees for beverage packages .

Celebrity Edge July 24, 2021 Sailing Mini Review

By sail2day , August 2, 2021 in Celebrity Cruises

250+ Club

Let me begin by saying that I am an experienced Celebrity cruiser and love the cruise line. I have cruised on the Millennium, Solstice and now the Edge class of vessels. I boarded the Edge in this post-pandemic world that we now live in not knowing what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised that on board the vessel very little has changed. None of the passengers wear masks, nor most of the crew. It seemed that life was back to normal.

I was impressed with the Martini Bar and the main lobby. It was the hub of the ship during the cruise. Everything entertainment wise centered around this area during the 7 days we were on the vessel.

Let me compare and contrast the positive and negatives of both class of vessels:

  • The Edge had an amazing lobby and Martini Bar that became the central part of the entertainment for the entire cruise
  • The Infinite Veranda in our cabin was something that I grew to love because it added square footage to our room. If you opened the window and the humidity did cloud the mirrors and warmed the room to an uncomfortable temperature. This was something that we lived with during the cruise.
  • The Sunset Bar on the Edge was poorly designed. You would think that with the greatest designers in the industry they would take into account the sun, especially in the Caribbean. The bar was so hot due to the sun that no passenger would remain at the bar for longer than 10 minutes. All they would have to do is put a tint on the plexiglass and things would improve. Nothing has been done even though the ship has been sailing for several years. One needs to take a look at the bar to see that there is no shade whatsoever. Not only are the passengers uncomfortable but so is the crew.
  • The four different dining rooms on the Edge add variety and choice for the passengers. This is much better than the one dining room concept on the Solstice Class.
  • The main theater is much better on the Edge than the Solstice Class. The tech features and the "theater in the round" are cutting Edge. Pardon the pun.
  • Eden on the Edge I just didn't get. Maybe it was me. I think I spent a total of 10 minutes in the venue. It needs work and a re-do.
  • The shops on the Edge blew my wife away. She loved them!
  • The Club on the Edge I loved!
  • The Pool area was the highlight of our cruise. The largest pool that I have seen on a cruise ship. Also the only pool with a large shallow area encircling the entire pool. We spent many hours here and loved the music and the atmosphere.
  • The food on the Edge was above and beyond, except in the Oceanview Café. I found breakfast to be what we normally expect, but dinner was not good. Gone are the sushi days when they would prepare freshly made sushi rolls and Indian specialties. The food offerings were lackluster.
  • The A La Carte Restaurants were good. I went to Raw on 5 and had the best meal of the cruise.
  • All in all, the Edge has a nicer and more modern atmosphere than the Solstice Class. Yet there are so many things I missed from the Equinox and the Reflection. In a perfect world I would blend both.

Nice summary!  I agree with your assessment of the Sunset Bar and the lack of shade.  I felt it was a problem in several spots on the ship.  I don’t understand why they would design a ship with so little access to shade.  We were in a SS and had access to the Retreat and it was the same there.

Our previous Edge cruise was in an infinite balcony and we didn’t enjoy it.  But we did love the idea of the four different dining rooms.  It kept meals much more interesting and it was nice to not be in a gigantic dining room.

glad you enjoyed your trip.  We did, too!

6 Top Transatlantic Cruises for 2024

T ransatlantic cruises are unique when you compare them to traditional cruises most people book for family trips and romantic getaways. These voyages tend to be longer in general, and they have more built-in days at sea and offer a lot more time on board as a result. Repositioning cruises that include a transatlantic crossing tend to attract more retirees and travelers who just want to relax and enjoy their ships' amenities, especially since fewer days in port means fewer excursions and more time doing nothing at all.

That said, the fact that transatlantic cruises can last as few as seven nights means they may fit in your plans more easily than you may think. There are also some benefits to transatlantic crossings that may not be obvious, including lower nightly rates, more onboard credit, and more time to kick back and relax at a floating luxury resort in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you're curious which transatlantic cruises are best for 2024, here are six top picks with different cruise lengths, itineraries and unique destinations to explore.

Explore cruises on GoToSea , a service of U.S. News.

Cunard Line

Date: Departs May 5, 2024

Departure port: Brooklyn, New York

Starting price: $2,449 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 7 to 18 nights

In May of 2024, Cunard's Queen Mary 2 vessel will offer three different transatlantic crossings of various lengths. Choose from a seven-night sailing from Brooklyn, New York , to Southampton, England; a nine-night sailing to Hamburg, Germany ; and an 18-night round-trip sailing that departs from Brooklyn and crosses the Atlantic twice on the way back to its starting point. This unique combination of itineraries lets you cross the sea and tailor your trip to how long you want to be away from home.

The 18-night itinerary is especially interesting, since it lets you depart from the United States and arrive back in Brooklyn in the end with stops in both England and Germany, as well as plenty of sea days in between. Luxury cruise line Cunard is known for its elegant design, lush amenities and upscale feel, and the Queen Mary 2 is one of the line's most luxurious ships. Highlights on this exclusive vessel include the Royal Court Theatre, a casino, gala evenings, an onboard spa and a vast library. The Queen Mary 2 holds up to 2,691 guests with 1,173 crew to cater to your every need.

Seabourn Cruise Line

Date: Departs March 24, 2024

Departure port: Miami

Starting price: $5,949 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 21 nights

Seabourn is offering a 21-night transatlantic cruise from Miami on Seabourn Quest in March 2024 that offers a diverse range of ports of call before ending its voyage in Las Palmas in Spain's Canary Islands . Departure from Miami is followed by nine days at sea. Then, you'll enjoy multiple stops in the Canary Islands – including Santa Cruz de La Palma and San Sebastián de La Gomera – as well as stops in Praia and Mindelo the Cape Verde archipelago.

This journey with Seabourn makes it possible for travelers to see some of the most beautiful and remote tropical islands in the world. The Canary Islands are known for their white sand beaches , volcanoes and lush greenery; similar landscapes can also be found in Cape Verde's coastal towns and villages. Seabourn Quest, a smaller ocean vessel, accommodates just 229 guests.

MSC Cruises

Date: Departs Nov. 8, 2024

Departure port: Southampton, England

Starting price: $769 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 16 nights

The MSC Virtuosa from MSC Cruises is repositioning from Europe to the Caribbean in November 2024, which gives travelers the chance to enjoy a lengthy transatlantic crossing with plenty of unique ports. This sailing departs from England with eight sea days plus stops in France, the Azores of Portugal, St. Maarten , Antigua and Barbuda, and Martinique . The ship ends its journey in Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe.

The MSC Virtuosa is a larger cruise vessel that boasts an impressive grand promenade with a LED dome ceiling, dedicated clubs for children and teens, an onboard spa, a lavish casino and the luxurious MSC Yacht Club section of the ship. This vessel holds a maximum of 6,334 passengers at once.

Princess Cruises

Date: Departs July 5, 2024

Departure port: New York City (Manhattan or Brooklyn)

Starting price: $4,098 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 31 nights

Princess Cruises also offers its share of transatlantic sailings on various vessels. Its 31-night crossing from New York to Barcelona, Spain , on Island Princess in July 2024 is jam-packed with exciting destinations to explore. This lengthy transatlantic voyage has only 13 sea days with planned stops in Canada's Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, England, Spain, Portugal and Morocco before the journey ends in Barcelona.

This intriguing sailing experience with Princess takes passengers to eight different countries in the span of a month. Island Princess is a nice ship for a long sailing because of its smaller size, with just 2,200 passengers and 900 crew. But the ship is also large enough to have a huge selection of included and specialty dining options, a Vegas-style casino, a sports court, a large central atrium for gathering, and several pools and hot tubs to enjoy.

Celebrity Cruises

Date: Departs April 11, 2024

Departure port: Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Starting price: $760 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 12 nights

Celebrity Cruises is offering a 12-night sailing on Celebrity Equinox in April 2024 that starts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and ends in Lisbon, Portugal – making it possible for travelers to enjoy eight relaxing days at sea. What's interesting about this sailing is its stops along the way, which include the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda; Porta Delgada in Portugal's Azores archipelago; and Porto in mainland Portugal.

The Celebrity Equinox accommodates a maximum of just 2,852 passengers at once, so this Celebrity vessel is a solid choice for travelers who want just the right size ship instead of a smaller vessel or a megaship. There are also plenty of onboard features to keep you happy and entertained as you float across the Atlantic Ocean, including The Casino, The Lawn Club with outdoor games like bocce ball and croquet, The Martini Bar, the adults-only Solarium and more.

Royal Caribbean International

Dates: Departs Oct. 24, 2024

Departure port: Barcelona, Spain

Starting price: $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 14 nights

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas is hosting a transatlantic voyage in October 2024 that departs from Barcelona, Spain, and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This vessel will make stops in Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Cartagena and Málaga in Spain, then spend eight days at sea. After that, enjoy a day in Nassau in the Bahamas before the cruise drops passengers off in sunny Florida.

Interior staterooms on this Royal Caribbean sailing start at just $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees), which works out to around $60 per night, per person. The Oasis of the Seas megaship can hold a total of 6,771 guests and 2,109 crew, so it's an enormous vessel – to put it mildly. This size may not be ideal for travelers who want a more intimate cruising experience, but it's perfect for cruisers who want plenty of space to spread out and endless activities to take part in. Oasis of the Seas boasts 20 different restaurants and cafes, 11 bars and lounges, a variety of pools and whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, the AquaTheater diving and entertainment venue, mini-golf, a casino and plenty more.

Port Canaveral extends contract with Norwegian, aims for expanded cruise presence

celebrity cruise 1 july

Port Canaveral on Wednesday approved a six-month extension of the port's contract with Norwegian Cruise Line , while the port and the company aim to work out a longer-term deal.

Port Canaveral CEO John Murray says he hopes one of the results will be the port gaining a greater presence of Norwegian ships in the future.

Since 2014, Norwegian has based some of its newest and largest ships at Port Canaveral, but mostly one at a time. From now through early 2026, six different Norwegian ships will rotate into and out of Port Canaveral. For a short time in early 2026, there will be three Norwegian ships based at Port Canaveral.

Previous deal with Norwegian: Norwegian Cruise Line signs new deal with Port Canaveral involving Escape, Getaway, Prima

Under the existing operating agreement, which was scheduled to expire on June 30, Norwegian operates the Norwegian Jade on a seven-day itinerary out of Cruise Terminal 10.

The amendment port commissioners unanimously approved Wednesday extends the term of the operating agreement for six months. Norwegian will continue to operate the Norwegian Jade out of Port Canaveral until August. The Jade then will be replaced in October with the Norwegian Epic, on seven-day itineraries out of Terminal 10.

The extension allows 19 home-port calls by Norwegian ships from July 1 through Dec. 31, resulting in a minimum guaranteed payment of $1.52 million to the port.

In the meantime, the port staff and Norwegian representatives will continue to discuss longer-term deployment options.

Here is the current plan for Norwegian ship deployments out of Port Canaveral:

  • Norwegian Jade: Saturday sailings through August 2024. The ship has a double-occupancy capacity of 2,353, was built in 2006 and was refurbished in 2022.
  • Norwegian Epic: Saturday sailings from October 2024 to April 2025. The ship has a double-occupancy capacity of 4,070, was built in 2010, and was refurbished in 2020.
  • Norwegian Aqua: Saturday sailings from April 2025 to August 2025. The new ship is under construction, and will debut at Port Canaveral. It has a double-occupancy capacity of 3,571.
  • Norwegian Joy: Saturday sailings from November 2025 to April 2026. The ship has a double-occupancy capacity of 3,776, was built in 2017, and was refurbished this year.
  • Norwegian Breakaway: Tuesday and Friday sailings from January 2026 to February 2026. The ship has a double-occupancy capacity of 3,903, was built in 2013, and was refurbished in 2020.
  • Norwegian Prima: Sunday sailings beginning in November 2025. The ship has a double-occupancy capacity of 3,099, and was built in 2022.

Port Canaveral is the world's second-busiest cruise port. Five cruise lines base ships at Port Canaveral — Carnival, Disney, MSC, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. Celebrity and Princess will add ships to the Port Canaveral lineup later this year.

DeSantis signs port charter amendments into law

Legislative delegation debate: Florida legislators reject proposal to boost Port Canaveral commissioner pay by 91.5%

Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed into law a bill that includes a series of amendments to Port Canaveral's charter. This is the last step in a once-a-decade process for updating the charter that includes recommendations from the port's 10-member Charter Review Committee; approval by the Canaveral Port Authority; then approval by the Florida House and Senate.

Among the changes in the port charter are ones that deal with stricter requirements for leases of greater than 30 years, which Port Canaveral Vice President and General Counsel Craig Langley has described at the "most impactful" for the port of the Charter Review Committee's recommendations. Other changes involve various procedures for soliciting contracts with vendors; expansion outside of Brevard County of the port's foreign trade zone, which offers tax advantages to participating businesses; and use of online legal notices.

The charter also has a new section, under which Port Canaveral would be required to "take reasonable measures to support the commercial space launch industry." SpaceX uses the port facilities in its recovery of boosters and other launched space hardware, and Blue Origin will be following suit.

Port CFO leaves for job in Tampa Bay

Michael Poole, who has been Port Canaveral's chief financial officer since May 2018, has left the port for a CFO position at Port Tampa Bay.

Prior to his joining Port Canaveral, Poole spent more than a decade as chief financial officer at JaxPort in Jacksonville, and was deputy port director at the Port of Pensacola for nine years.

"Mike was well-respected and did a great job here," Murray said at Wednesday's Canaveral Port Authority meeting.

Murray said a new CFO will be in place by mid-July.
