The Cliffs of Moher and the general "greeness" throughout the trip were sights that I will never forget. However, what made the trip truly spectacular was the humor and leadership of our guide, John Kelly. Not only was he extremely knowledgeable…
shanja - TripAdvisor Professional and fun I did the Cliffs of Moher tour, together with my husband and my mother in law. All was perfectly timed and the bus driver, Valentine, was amazing. He gave us a lot of info, he was professional but at the same time fun and entertaining. We were very happy and we definitely recommend the company.
chlorophyllenvy - TripAdvisor Cliff of Moher with Dermot - AMAZING! We had an absolutely amazing experience with Paddywagon. Our driver Dermot was exceptional, in every way. The cliffs were just amazing, breathtakingly so. The trip was long but loaded with history and enchanting tidbits about that beautiful country and its history. We were honestly trilled and it was…

FAQ for Visiting the Cliffs of Moher Tours

How long is the day trip to the cliffs of moher.

Most of the day trip tours from Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher are around 12-13 hours long. Although it is a long day, there are lots of stops and places to see, so the longest you’ll be on a bus/train in one go is around 2 hours. Most of the tours make quick stops for snacks and bathroom breaks so each bus journey isn’t too long.

Can kids take the tours?

Kids are welcome on all the tours, however, it should be noted that some of the drives are up to 2 hours in length so may not suit younger kids. It’s worth considering this before you book. Although most of the drop-offs along the Cliffs are fenced it’s still vital to keep a close eye on kids and make sure they stay on the path.

How much time do you need at the Cliffs of Moher?

All the tours include a minimum of 1.5 hours at the Cliffs of Moher and this is the perfect amount of time needed for exploring the Cliffs. It allows time to take in the views of the Cliffs of Moher, walk along the fenced sections of the cliffs and explore O’Brien’s Tower.

What’s the best time to visit the Cliffs of Moher?

The Cliffs of Moher are beautiful throughout the year and are open every day excluding December 24-26. Irelands weather is notoriously changeable but tends to be milder during the months May-August. These months would give you the best chance of milder weather and nicer conditions for visiting the cliffs. Our favorite time to visit the Cliffs is during mid-summer (July) when the weather tends to be warmer and the views a little better.

Are there bathrooms at the Cliffs of Moher?

Yes, there are bathrooms at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre. If you need to use them make sure you do so before you visit the cliffs as it can be a long walk back!

What should I wear when visiting the Cliffs of Moher?

The weather in Ireland is very changeable and it’s possible to have 4 seasons in one day, even in the middle of summer. In addition, the Cliffs of Moher are exposed to the Atlantic Ocean so even on a calm day the wind can make it very chilly.

We recommend packing some layered clothing for your visit, including a raincoat. If the weather forecast is poor we highly recommend packing a rain poncho or a full set of wet gear. Leave the umbrella in your hotel -it tends to be too windy to use an umbrella at the Cliffs!

Is there a lot of walking at the Cliffs of Moher?

You can do as much or as little walking at the Cliffs as you like. The cliffs are located around 150 metres from where the tour buses drop off. It is a short flat walk suitable for everyone.

For those who wish to explore the cliffs more, you can walk to the south viewpoint which is around 1.5km along the cliffs, or explore O’Briens tower to the north. The views along all sections of the cliffs are epic so it really doesn’t matter where you go.

Thu – Trang 1 month ago “Great tour with excellent guide and driver” This is my best tour on getyourguide so far. Derrick and Vlad were the dream team and I could have not asked for more. The weather was amazing and we were able to see the Cliffs of Moher clearly. We also learnt a lot about Irish history from Derrick who is a true entertainer. Highly recommended! Keep up the good work.

Wesley 1 month ago Peter and Lecek were our guide and driver for the day. They both make it fun and enjoyable. Peter was very firm of timing which is awesome so we were on schedule each time. We learned a lot about Ireland: from history, places, etc. Cliff of Moher is beyond pretty and they give us time to wonder around. Definitely will recommend this tour.

Fragrantone 1 month ago A must see and do! So happy we chose this tour. The staff were fabulous and offered so much history and information. We were fortunate it was a clear calm day and could see for miles. Stopped at monastery ruins on the way from Dublin to the Cliffs. Such a treat to see the healthiest cows on the planet tucked into the grounds around the monastery. Just loved every minute of it. The bus driver took us from the Cliffs along Wild Atlantic Way for more stunning scenery with stops at The Burren and a busy Galway before returning to Dublin. Absolutely fantastic! Thank you for making our brief trip to Ireland such a joy!

Kayla H 3 weeks ago Had an amazing time on this day trip with tour guide Kevin & bus driver John! Both were very knowledgable on the history of Ireland & answered all questions on the tour by other guests. They made the time on the bus an educational experience with a good mix of talking, playing Irish music, and allowing for questions. Kevin & John both did their best to give us the maximum time possible at each location. We even lucked out and got extra time at the Cliff’s & Galway! These sights are a must do & they are a must do with Kevin & John. My friend and I wished we had more time in Ireland to do another bus tour operated by Finn McCool.

kourtis_g 5 days ago An amazing tour-experience This was an absolutely amazing experience. Derrick and Vlad are absolutely professional at what they are doing. Derrick shared a lot of interesting information for Ireland, did some funny jokes, taught us some Irish and played beautiful music.

Tips for Visiting the Cliffs of Moher

These are the best tips if you're taking one of the top rated Cliffs of Moher tours from Dublin

The Cliffs of Moher may seem completely magical and glamorous, but in reality, the majority of your pictures will probably turn out like the one above; windy, foggy, and rainy.

Ireland is known for its year-round rainy weather, so here are some of our best tips for visiting the Cliffs of Moher!

☘️ Pack a Rain Jacket

Even if the weather is supposed to be nice, bring a backpack and pack one anyway. The weather can change in a matter of minutes, so come prepared.

☘️ Pack Good Walking Shoes

It’s 5 miles from the start to the end of the trail along the cliffs. Now, you don’t have to do the entire thing, but you will be walking along rocky pathways, so leave the sandals at home for any one of these Cliffs of Moher tours from Dublin.

☘️ Pack Food and Water

If you spend a long time exploring the cliffs and find yourself a few miles away from your car, there’s no stopping for a Guinness and some fish and chips before you head back.

Be sure to plan ahead if you are attempting the entire 5-mile journey!

☘️ Be Careful Near the Edge

Unfortunately, many people have lost their lives at the Cliffs of Moher due to unstable edges, tripping, etc.

If you decide to go over the stone wall that they have in place to prevent that, understand you are doing so at your own risk!

☘️ Be Prepared for Heavy Winds

Due to the unique location of the cliffs, it’s almost always windy here. Come prepared with a windbreaker and extra layers.

Even if it’s a balmy 70 degrees on the drive into the parking lot, once you get out on the cliffs, it’s usually significantly colder!

FAQ: Cliffs of Moher Tours from Dublin

In this section, I’ve provided some essential information regarding your day trip to the Cliffs of Moher including how long you need, the distance between the cliffs and the Irish capital of Dublin, and more!

How Many Days Do You Need at Cliffs of Moher?

bus tour dublin to cliffs of moher

You need one full day at the Cliffs of Moher to do the hike around the cliffs, take some awesome photos, and explore the Visitor’s Center. But, this doesn’t leave you much in the event that there is inclement weather.

If you end up visiting on a day with lots of rain or cloud cover, you may be left with little to no pictures or views of the cliffs.

This is why I typically say to set aside at least two days for the Cliffs of Moher, so you have a rain date, if necessary.

Are the Cliffs of Moher Worth Visiting?

If you're looking to take a Cliffs of Moher tour from Dublin, be sure to check out this article

Ireland’s Cliffs of Moher are no doubt worth a visit . They sit perched on the sharp edge of the Atlantic Ocean with the main view looking out over this vast sea and the idyllic Irish countryside full of cows, sheep, and beautiful rolling hills on the other.

While they are frequented by more and more tourists each year, they are nevertheless one of the best natural attractions in Ireland .

For the ultimate magical experience, pack yourself a picnic and walk down the path along the cliffs to where there are fewer tourists.

The whole journey will take you a couple of hours, not including eating time, but your efforts will be rewarded with uninterrupted views and a stunning backdrop!

Especially with these convenient Cliffs of Moher tours from Dublin, there’s no reason not to spend at least a few hours checking out this impressive spot!

How Far are the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin?

If you're coming from Dublin, these are the best Cliffs of Moher tours you can take

When traveling by car, the Cliffs of Moher take about 3 hours and 15 minutes to get to from Dublin.

That being said, the Irish also drive on the left side of the road and sit on the right side of the car, with the majority of cars being manual, so you’ll need to know how to drive a stick shifter. Because of this, the journey typically takes tourists a lot longer.

This is why I recommend first-time visitors to Ireland, or even just those who aren’t comfortable driving under these conditions, to book a tour through a reputable agency like the ones I have mentioned below.

It relieves you of the stress of driving in Ireland, saves you time and money, and allows you to sit back and enjoy the view!

☘️ Pro Tip: The Cliffs of Moher are free to see, but if you have to park a car there is a €6 fee !

Can you do a Day Trip from Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher?

bus tour dublin to cliffs of moher

Absolutely, you can! The Cliffs of Moher, as I mentioned above, are just over 3 hours away from Dublin by car. You can easily do a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin , even if you can’t stay the night or you have to return for an evening flight out of Dublin.

If you are tight on time and need to catch a flight, I highly recommend booking one of the tours below instead of trying to drive yourself… especially if you aren’t familiar with the driving conditions in Ireland.

The tours above are highly rated and promote on-time pick-ups and drop-offs, so you can visit this iconic landmark with the confidence that you’ll be returning to Dublin on time for your other obligations.

How Do You Get to the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin?

If you're thinking of choosing one of these popular Cliffs of Moher tours from Dublin, be sure to book in advance

There are three ways to get from Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher:

☘️ You drive yourself

This is a viable option as long as you are comfortable with the driving conditions and you aren’t short on time.

☘️ A guided tour

This is the most recommended method of reaching the cliffs if you have other scheduled commitments (like a flight, perhaps) or aren’t comfortable traversing the Irish countryside on your own.

The roads are usually pretty well maintained, but after a rainstorm in particular, things can get a bit slick on those steep, muddy hills.

☘️ You can take the train, a local bus, and a cab to reach the cliffs

The Dublin to Cliffs of Moher bus is run by Dublin Coach which offers affordable transportation between Dublin City – Burgh Quay and Ennis, but you’ll need to book a second bus from Ennis to Liscannor on Bus Eireann or a similar local bus company.

The total Dublin to Cliffs of Moher bus price adds up to around 40 euros per person, roundtrip. Of course, this cost will vary depending on the time of year that you visit, etc.

This is a viable option, but you’ll have to arrange a cab to drop you off at the Cliffs of Moher Visitors Center and pick you back up and either bring you to your accommodation or the bus station which can be a little bit of a pain if you aren’t great with technology or you don’t have an international phone plan.

There aren’t dozens of taxis just lined up at the Cliffs of Moher waiting to bring people to the local bus or train station, so you may need to talk to someone inside the visitor’s center to arrange one to come and get you. Going from the Cliffs of Moher to Dublin is actually the trickier of transportation to arrange.

When is the Best Time to Visit the Cliffs of Moher?

These are the best rated Cliffs of Moher tours from Dublin

While the Cliffs of Moher are open to visitors year-round, there are certainly some times of the year that provide the best chance of good weather, which also means good visibility of the cliffs.

The summer months of May through September typically offer the warmest weather in County Clare . July is the county’s least rainiest month with lower wind speeds on average, whereas August through January has the highest chances of rain throughout the year.

In my opinion, the best time to visit the Cliffs of Moher is in the shoulder season months of April through May and September through October . Though the chances of rain will be higher, there will be far fewer people there and everything will be much less crowded.

If you’re hoping to visit the cliffs without thousands of other people, get up early and get to the cliffs around sunrise . Not only is this one of the most beautiful times to view the cliffs, but it’s also when there will be far fewer people.

The majority of tourists arrive between 9:30-11:00am and stay for at least a few hours, so anytime after 4-5:00pm is usually a good bet also.

Can I Go From Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher by Car?

You can absolutely get to the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin by car, but it is a long ride to do on your own if you aren’t familiar with the roads.

The Irish also drive from the right side of the car and on the left side of the road, so if you aren’t comfortable with this then I’d consider joining a guided tour instead.

Below is a map I created so you can see the total distance between Dublin and the cliffs!

There are many stops with this tour in particular, including thirty minutes in Kinvara, fifteen minutes at The Burren, a drive by Galway Bay, an hour at Doolin Pier, an hour and a half at Cliffs of Moher, a drive past Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, and forty-five minutes in Doolin. Note that admission to the Cliffs of Moher is not included in the tour price.

Last but not least is this tour which actually includes a boat ride, which makes it stand out amongst other Cliffs of Moher tours! This one, in particular, includes a boat ride at the Cliffs of Moher from the Doolin Pier.

This tour includes admission to the Cliffs of Moher, private transportation, and all fees. It leaves around 8:30 a.m., and you’ll be picked up at your location of choice, which is one of the great things about booking a more luxurious tour.

In total, the tour is about twelve hours long. This is an excellent way to truly explore and experience the beauty of the Cliffs of Moher and Ireland’s coastline, but it requires a bigger budget than some other tours on this list.

Top 10 facts about the Cliffs of Moher (that are frickin’ awesome!)

What are the cliffs of moher.

The Cliffs of Moher are a significant geological site and stunning natural wonder located on the western coast of Ireland.

Formed primarily from sedimentary rock layers that have been shaped over millions of years, the cliffs rise to a height of 702 feet at their highest point and stretch for five miles along the Atlantic coast of County Clare.

Fun fact – the name “Moher” is Gaelic for “ruined fort” and pronounced “Mow-huh”. 😉

Why are the Cliffs of Moher so famous?

The Cliffs of Moher are famous due to their combination of natural beauty, geological significance, cultural importance and tourist-friendly trails.

When you see them, you’ll know instantly what I mean! They’re one of Ireland’s most iconic landmarks and are deeply ingrained in Irish culture and folklore, featuring in various literary works, poems, songs and films.

The cliffs are also part of the larger Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark which draws millions of tourists every year.

How far is it from Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher?

The Cliffs of Moher are 134 miles from Dublin but the road distance is about 167 miles.

How long does it take to get to the Cliffs of Moher?

It takes around three and a half hours to drive from Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher.

How do I get from Dublin to Cliffs of Moher by tour?

Getting from Dublin to Cliffs of Moher via a day trip tour is the easiest and most convenient way in my opinion!

One of the best things about it is you don’t have to drive or navigate and can have a nap on the way home if you fancy it!

As an inexperienced driver I personally find it a lot less stressful to book a guided tour! It’s also a lot cheaper.

A day trip on a guided tour will cost you around £65 on average. However, renting a car for the day, plus petrol (especially in this economy!) will set you back a lot more.

I also enjoy asking the guides lots of extra questions and meeting new people!

There are several different tours from Dublin to Cliffs of Moher. Here are a couple I would recommend:

– Cliffs of Moher Full-Day Tour from Dublin : witness the Cliffs of Moher and travel through Ireland’s rich heritage on a scenic drive to the Galway coast. Stopping en route for photo opportunities in Kinvara fishing village and Bunratty Castle.

– Dublin: Cliffs of Moher, Atlantic Edge & Galway City : with round-trip transportation from Dublin, visit the Cliffs of Moher (two hour stop), Galway City (two hour stop and walking tour included), and travel along the thrilling Burren Coast of County Clare.

How do I get from Dublin to Cliffs of Moher by coach?

There are many nationwide operators offering coach tours from Dublin to Cliffs of Moher. A coach trip usually takes a full day leaving Dublin at 7am and returning at around 7pm.

Although I would pay a little more to go on a guided day tour to the Cliffs of Moher as you’ll get to stop at other cool points of interest along the way.

Plus, you get a guide that will be able to share their expert knowledge and local insight as part of your trip!

How do I get to from Dublin to Cliffs of Moher by car?

Travelling to the Cliffs of Moher by car from Dublin is pretty straightforward, albeit a bit of a long drive! I’d recommend sharing the driving duties, especially if you’re planning to return on the same day.

On average it takes about three hours and 20 minutes to reach the Cliffs of Moher via the M6 motorway. But it’s pretty much a straight line drive until you turn off at Athenry – so simple to navigate!

The main car park is on the opposite side of the road from the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre. I recommend you book your tickets online in advance to be sure of entry. This will also save you time on the day.

If you’re a disabled driver or passenger with a permit, there are several designated parking bays available near the Visitor Centre in the main coach park.

The attendant at the entry cabin will be able to advise and direct you to the available spaces in the areas designated for disabled parking.

Parking is €8 or €4 if you buy an off-peak ticket online.

How do I get from Dublin to Cliffs of Moher by public transport?

It’s possible to get to the Cliffs of Moher by public transport and takes around four hours.

First take the train from Dublin Heuston Station to Ennis Station, with a change in Limerick (which takes on average three hours). Then take the 350 bus towards Galway from Ennis Bus Station.

The return train journey costs €58.98 and then a further €8.00 for the bus from Ennis Bus Station to the Cliffs of Moher.

Be wary though that the bus only comes every two hours so you’ll need to be organised with your time.

If you choose to use the public transport route, I would recommend staying over night by the Cliffs of Moher and returning the next day. This will also give you chance to explore more of the local area whilst you’re visiting and break up the long journey.

It actually works out cheaper or the same to go by a day trip tour though. The Dublin to Cliffs of Moher day tours cost between €65 to €68 and are far easier journeys!

The tour buses stop at other points of interest en route from Dublin to Cliffs of Moher to break up the journey too. Depending on which tour you choose these can include, the lunar landscapes of The Burren, the city of Galway and the ruins of Kilmacduagh Monastery.

Plus, you’ll be able to sit back, relax and just enjoy the scenery from the coach without the worry of missing your transfers.

Can you do the Cliffs of Moher in one day?

Yes, it’s absolutely possible to visit the Cliffs of Moher in one day! The cliffs are a popular day-trip destination, and many visitors choose to explore the area within a day.

If you’re making your own way to the Cliffs of Moher, here’s a suggested itinerary for a day trip:

  • Morning: Start your day early to make the most of your time. Arrive at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre, which is the main access point. The Visitor Centre opens in the morning, and you can learn about the cliffs, get maps and gather information about the trails.
  • Late morning to afternoon: Explore the walking trails along the cliffs. The main Cliffs of Moher Coastal Trail is about five miles long and offers stunning views. Take your time, enjoy the scenery and make sure to stop at the designated viewing points.
  • Lunch: You can bring a packed lunch or explore nearby towns like Doolin or Liscannor for local dining options.
  • Afternoon: Continue exploring the cliffs and take in the breathtaking landscapes. O’Brien’s Tower near the Visitors Centre will give you a great viewpoint along the cliffs.
  • Late Afternoon: If time allows, you can explore the surrounding area or visit the nearby villages for a taste of local culture.
  • Evening: Head back to your starting point or continue your journey (depending on your travel plans!).

If you plan to visit the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin as part of a day trip tour , you’ll be given a certain amount of time (usually a couple of hours) to explore the main trails to the edge of the cliffs near the Visitors Centre.

Can you walk the Cliffs of Moher without paying?

Technically, you don’t have to pay to see the cliffs as they are part of the natural landscape. However, there’s a fee for the Cliffs of Moher visitor experience which contributes to the maintenance, safety measures and visitor services at the site.

If you plan to rent a car during your trip to Dublin, you can also visit the cliffs for free by parking in the lovely village of Doolin and walking the Doolin Cliff trail.

It takes around two and half hours up to the visitors centre but you can carry on the path to walk the rest of the cliffs.

If you plan to visit the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin as part of a day trip tour , your entrance fee will be covered as part of your tour.

Can you visit the Cliffs of Moher without a tour?

Yes, you can visit the Cliffs of Moher without taking a guided tour when you get there.

The cliffs are open to the public and you can access the main viewing areas and walking paths without being part of a guided tour.

I actually recommend exploring the cliffs independently. It’s lovely to walk along the cliffs at your own pace and just enjoy the incredible scenery!

How much time should you spend at the Cliffs of Moher?

The amount of time you spend at the Cliffs of Moher is entirely up to you and depends on what you want to do whilst you’re there! Whether that be fly-by visit, hiking or a tour. It also depends on how you’re making your way there:

  • Quick visit: If you’re short on time, a quick visit to the main viewpoints and O’Brien’s Tower can take around an hour and a half. This allows you to capture the stunning views and experience the essence of the cliffs.
  • Standard visit: For a broader more inclusive experience, including exploring some of the walking trails and taking time for photography, plan for around two to three hours. This allows you to enjoy the scenery, visit the Visitor Centre and get something to eat.
  • Hiking and exploration: If you’re interested in hiking along the trails, exploring different vantage points and possibly reaching the southern end of the cliffs, you might want to allocate four to five hours or more. This allows for a more immersive experience of the cliffs and a deeper connection with the surroundings.
  • Cultural and educational experience: If you plan to visit the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre to learn about the geological and cultural aspects of the wonder, consider allocating additional time on your trip. The Visitor Centre itself can take about an hour to explore.

How long does it take to walk the Cliffs of Moher?

The time it takes to walk the Cliffs of Moher can vary depending on the trail you choose. But also how much time you spend enjoying the views along the way!

On average, the entire Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk, which covers around 11 miles from Doolin to Hags Head, can take around four to five hours to complete.

If you’re interested in a shorter walk, there are various marked trails and viewing points at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre, such as the Cliffs of Moher Coastal Trail, which is about five miles long. This shorter trail may take around two to three hours to complete.

Keep in mind that weather conditions can also impact the time it takes to walk the cliffs – this is Ireland after all! I’d double check the weather forecast before you make a final decision.

But if you plan to visit the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin as part of a day trip tour , you will be given a certain amount of time (usually up to two hours) to explore the main trails near the Visitors Centre.

Is there anywhere to eat at the Cliffs of Moher?

The Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre has a small cafe you can get a bite to eat at. But I would recommend eating at the nearby Stonecutter’s Kitchen.

It’s a lovely little traditional stone cottage that is more than a century old and is a popular spot for authentic, home-cooked Irish meals.

Was Harry Potter filmed at the Cliffs of Moher?

Yes! The Cliffs of Moher were one of the filming locations in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”.

The cliffs are featured in a scene where Harry and Dumbledore teleport onto the side of the sea cliffs and enter a cave to find a horcrux.

But it’s not just Harry Potter that the backdrop of the cliffs have been used for. They’ve also made appearances in various TV shows, music videos and other films. These include, “The Princess Bride”, “Leap Year” and “Into the West”.

Are the Cliffs Moher worth seeing?

OMG YES! The Cliffs of Moher are a must-see destination in Ireland.

It’s an unforgettable experience and offers you a chance to connect with one of the country’s most awe-inspiring natural beauties!

It was one of my personal favourites whilst I was visiting Dublin and I would definitely go again. Visiting as part of a day trip was so fun too because you get to see so many awesome stops along the way!

Top 10 facts about the Cliffs of Moher

Just incase you weren’t excited enough for your trip, here are my favourite facts about the Cliffs of Moher. Just to give you a little more background on this amazing wonder!

  • The cliffs were formed during the Upper Carboniferous period, approximately 319 million years ago through a combination of geological processes, including sedimentation and volcanic activity!
  • The foot of the cliffs are made of the oldest rocks and get younger as they build towards the cliff edge. That progression accounts for the varied colours at each layer of rock and sediment.
  • The name “Moher” comes from an old fort called “Mothar” that once stood on Hag’s Head, the southernmost point of the cliffs.
  • The Cliffs of Moher attract over a million visitors annually, making them one of the most popular natural attractions in Ireland!
  • The iconic O’Brien’s Tower, located near the midpoint of the cliffs, was built in 1835 by Sir Cornelius O’Brien as an observation tower for tourists.
  • The cliffs vary in height along their length but the highest point is 702 feet above sea level.
  • On a clear day, you can see the Aran Islands in Galway Bay from the cliffs. The islands are a group of three islands known for their rich cultural and historical heritage.
  • The cliffs aren’t just beautiful to look at, they’re also home to a diverse range of seabirds, including puffins, razorbills, guillemots and kittiwakes.
  • The cliffs are part of the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark, which aims to promote sustainable development and conservation of the area.
  • Besides being a popular tourist destination, the cliffs have been featured in various films and television shows, including “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and “The Princess Bride.”

  • Katie Howard ★★★★★ 2 weeks ago Neil and Sarah were fantastic! If you are in Dublin and debating whether this tour is worth it I promise it is. Absolutely amazing. They give you nice long stops so you feel you can take in the area. Great history lessons while driving but also quiet time with music. The sheepdog demonstration was the icing on the cake. I want to come back again now to those areas as they were stunning!
  • Alexandra McDonald ★★★★★ a month ago What a fantastic and professional tour company! This Wild Rover tour from Dublin to the Cliffs was the perfect choice for my 7 year old and me. We were visiting Dublin for a long weekend and the Cliffs had been a bucket list item, and not stressing about driving was my main reason for booking. I reserved on their website directly (a fair price!) and went to the meeting point that day at 7am. They have … More large, comfortable coaches with their logo. The Cliffs are magnificent and a must-see! The driver Garry and our guide Rory were so professional and entertaining. Rory pointed out landmarks as we drove, gave us a comprehensive history of Ireland, and had such a lovely personality all day! We made a rest stop on the route there and back (no WC on the bus). We returned back at 7:30pm and it was such a great (albeit long) day. Furthermore, Rory came through the cabin as we were arriving back in Dublin to answer any personal questions we had about the area, and took a few minutes to recommend local restaurants, pubs, and experiences that we would find useful. Absolutely recommend!!
  • Theresa Langston ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago Our tour to Northern Ireland and the Giant Cliffs were amazing! Our tour guides Krishna and Barbara were so informative and friendly people. Barbara gave us a lot of Irish history and folklore. The Titanic museum in Belfast was so well done and sad too. The Giant Cliffs are amazing! The views are so beautiful. The countryside throughout Ireland is so green. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting … More Ireland they were amazing tour guides. Thank you so much!
  • Ed Torres ★★★★★ 2 weeks ago This is the easiest and most stress free way to see some amazing sights in Ireland. We got to relax and let Wild Rover worry about the driving and details. Krishna and Brendan were absolute professionals and a joy to spend the day with. The bus was spotless and had USB charging ports at every seat. If I were to do this tour again, I'd pack a lunch to maximize my time at Giant's Causeway … More as the two food options there can get very busy.
  • Alana Steer ★★★★★ a week ago Our first tour with Wild Rover tours was a great success! We loved the scenic drive through the winding roads of the Wild Altantic Way along with the breathtaking views of the Cliffs of Moher and the liveliness of Galway City! Our driver, Lisa, did an amazing job travelling the tight narrow roads and our guide, Ciara, was very engaging, timely, friendly and funny. Would definitely book with Wild … More Rover again!
  • Bob Carey ★★★★ ☆ a month ago Our tour guide Barbara was great. She was very entertaining and informative. The Giants Causeway was beautiful and breathtaking. My only disappointment was the Black Cab tour. Our driver was not aware of our passengers, at one point we had to get back in the cab to go no more than 150 feet…. He presented the time of the Troubles from his perspective as a youth growing up. Otherwise, I highly recommend … More Wild River.
  • laura taylor ★★★★★ 4 weeks ago Truly the best and most enjoyable experience on our trip to Dublin. Liam and JP were exceptional in their knowledge of the regions visited and making everyone feel comfortable and welcomed. I wouldn't hesitate in booking another Wild Rover tour in Ireland again! Stop scrolling and simply book it!
  • Marine MALINGUE ★★★★★ 4 weeks ago Really nice experience I truly recommend it! Peter, our driver offered us a safe trip and Ian our guide was very nice and friendly, I particularly appreciated Glendalough and the sheperd demonstration which was a very good surprise! You can buy something to eat during your stop at Kilkenny and there are many opportunities to go to wasrooms during the excursion, everything is perfectly organise and … More you really have enough time at each place you visit! It definitely worth the price!
  • Rosemary ★★★★★ a month ago During our stay in Dublin we took two of Wild Rover's Tours. They were both extremely organized and the guides and drivers were all amazing. I can't say enough good things about these tours. They maximize the trip so you get the most out of your time. The guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. Both of our bus drivers were extremely safe drivers. The buses were clean, comfortable and … More had USB plugs easily accessible. Before we booked the tours we sent a few inquiry emails which were answered very promptly. Everything was amazing from start to finish. A bit about our Tours - The Cliffs of Moher, Atlantic Edge Ocean Walk & Galway (Rory was our tour guide & Brian was our Bus Driver) - This was SOOOOOOOO well worth it. The Cliffs were superb and you have 2 hours to explore them. The Atlantic Edge Ocean had amazing views and the countryside we drove through was picturesque. In Galway we walked to Merchant Row and had a lovely lunch at the Kings Head (this was one of the recommendations Rory gave us and it did not disappoint.) Rory was funny, charming and balanced our tour time with history, funny antidotes and was so helpful at every opportunity. Brian was a great driver and I felt completely safe in his care. Our second tour was - Giants Causeway & Belfast City Day (Barbara was our guide & John was our bus driver) - What a lovely day. If your a GoT fan, you will get to see several locations used in the show. You will have a choice to go to the Titanic Museum or the Black Cab Tours (I highly recommend the Taxi tours). The locations were amazing, the scenery was lovely and we had more than enough time at each of the locations. Barbara was fun and played a lot of music which certainly got us into the mood at each place we went to. She answered a lot of questions and John even spoke Gaelic for us! He was a great and safe driver.

What people love about Cliffs Of Moher Tours

I had an incredible week on the Overland Great Atlantic Adventure tour! I went as a solo traveller in my 20s and, despite being nervous at first as the rest of the group were all travelling in pairs, had the best experience I could’ve asked for. We all had a great time together - I found the tour perfect for couples, family, friends and solo travellers alike. Our tour guide David was amazing, very kind, friendly and knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure the tour worked for everyone. If you join an Overland tour, you’ll be lucky to have David as your guide, he’s the best! All of the B&Bs/hotels were of great quality with breakfast included every day. The van is very comfortable and has plenty of space for a small group, much better than a huge coach full of 60 people (in my opinion). There was a fair bit of driving but it is inevitable with how much ground is covered. The places we visited and activities were all incredible. The only slight negative I have is that sometimes there were activities on the itinerary that we simply didn’t have time for - e.g. a 2.5 hour hike at the cliffs of moher, and with so much packed in you really don’t get much time to see some places. For example, we arrived in Westport around 7:30pm and left before 9am the next morning, but again that is inevitable with so much packed into such a short space of time. My highlights of the trip were kayaking in Dingle (I absolutely loved Dingle in general and am very glad we had 2 nights there) as well as climbing Croagh Patrick on our last day! The climb was tough but I would definitely recommend it if you’re able - an amazing experience. All in all I’m so glad I booked this trip and truly had the time of my life, I would definitely recommend Overland!
The entire trip was wonderful, very well organized, and satisfying. Peter Flood was an excellent tour guide. He was as knowledgeable as could be, funny, and helpful; and really seems to love what he does.

Exploring Ireland’s west coast: from Dingle to Donegal, Achill Island and the Cliffs of Moher

D INGLE, Ireland – The west coast of Ireland is the stuff of travel dreams – filled with soaring cliffs, bright green pastures and grazing sheep, glorious beaches, charming towns and ancient ruins. It’s worthy of a week all its own, if you have the time.

I suspected when I planned this itinerary that I was doing it too fast – covering too many kilometers in just four days, not leaving enough time to stop and smell the rhododendrons (which were in full bloom in County Mayo in late May, by the way).

Ireland’s tourism department created the Wild Atlantic Way in 2014, a driving route along the west coast that covers some 1,500 miles through nine counties. Well-placed signage along the route directs drivers to and from sights along the scenic path.

We didn’t cover it all, skipping some sections entirely and occasionally opting for faster highways to get us to our destinations quicker.

But we covered much of it, starting in Dingle, traveling north to the Cliffs of Moher, then driving through Galway to Clifden, biking out to Achill Island and ending our tour in Donegal. I wished I had an extra day in every location.

Ah well. It’s always better to want more than to stay too long.

And who knows — maybe I’ll be back. The new Aer Lingus flight, nonstop between Cleveland and Dublin, makes frequent trips to Ireland pretty tempting.

Dingle Peninsula

The Dingle Peninsula is one of several scenic peninsulas along Ireland’s southwest coast. The Iveragh Peninsula, with its well-known Ring of Kerry scenic drive, is directly south and more popular. But I chose Dingle because it’s smaller, more manageable, and typically less crowded.

Dingle’s primary attraction is Slea Head Drive, a 24-mile loop route at the far west end of the peninsula that hugs the coastline most of the way. It’s dotted with ancient ruins and more contemporary sites, with dramatic cliffs, lush farmland and beautiful beaches.

The entire route was spectacular, striking and serene all at once. And though just 24 miles, it took us more than six hours to complete, as we stopped nearly a dozen times to check out interesting sites along the way.

Most of the route was uncrowded, although I imagine that will change as the summer tourist season heats up. The route is two-way, except for tour buses, which must travel clockwise. Most of the traffic flows that way too – in part, no doubt, to avoid getting trapped by one of those mega buses we saw maneuvering some very tight hairpin turns. The route is also popular with bicyclists, although it looked like too much of a workout for me, with lots of hills.

Among the stops:

* The Blasket Centre, on the mainland directly across from Great Blasket Island, the one-time home of as many as 175 residents. In 1953, the island was evacuated – too many people had voluntarily relocated, leaving the existing population too isolated and vulnerable. The island’s rich Irish-speaking culture is chronicled and celebrated at this small museum, built in 1994. Don’t miss it. Note: Separately, tours to the island are available from Dingle.

* Dunbeg Fort, a defensive structure dating back some 2,000 years or more. It’s been substantially eroded and rebuilt over the years, and it’s little wonder why – this fort is precariously perched on the cliffs, hundreds of feet above the crashing Atlantic.

* Gallarus Oratory, an elegantly constructed dry stone building – that is, built without mortar — which dates back as many as 1,300 years. The small structure, about 16 feet by 10 feet, was likely used as a small chapel.

* Irish Famine Cottages, a collection of small, spare structures built in the 19th century, and abandoned during the Great Famine, which hit this area of Ireland particularly hard.

And don’t miss a stop at Dunmore Head and Coumeenoole Beach – a gorgeous stretch of sand and the only place in Ireland I dared take my shoes off and walk barefoot in the water. Brrr!

The town of Dingle is the starting and ending point for the drive and a lovely place to spend a couple of nights. Tucked alongside a protective harbor, the charming town is home to dozens of restaurants and shops. It’s also a thriving fishing port, with a downtown marina lined with commercial boats.

I had my best meal in all of Ireland here at Out of the Blue , which offers a seafood-only menu written on a chalkboard, dictated by what the boats bring in. I also heard some of the best Irish music of my trip in Dingle, at O’Sullivan’s Courthouse Pub and Neligan’s.

And don’t miss Murphy’s Ice Cream, with two locations in town, featuring a tasty gin-flavored ice cream, and chocolate whiskey, among many others.

Where we stayed: We spent two nights at the quiet and comfortable O’Neill’s Bed and Breakfast , well-located on a side street in town, operated by Stephen O’Neill, who took over the business from his parents several years ago. At 110 euros per night, it was the most economical accommodation of my 9-night trip to Ireland and included a full Irish breakfast.

Note: There are two routes into Dingle, one along the southern coast of the peninsula and another along the northern coast. The northern route, along R560, cuts through the mountains via Conor Pass, a narrow, twisting mountain road that, after reaching its peak at about 1,500 feet, descends dramatically into Dingle. The roadway, which reduces to one lane in sections, is not for the faint of heart – but it is spectacular. Don’t miss it.

A final thought on Dingle: The afternoon we arrived, a large cruise ship was docked off the coast of Dingle – an increasingly common occurrence, according to O’Neill, who said there are four more ships scheduled to visit town this summer. There is no major pier here, so passengers are shuttled via tender to the mainland, where they descend on the small downtown for a few hours of shopping and sightseeing.

It will be interesting to see whether and how the cruise industry alters the small-town charm of Dingle and other Irish coastal communities. On the one hand, the economic impact of the visitors is certainly welcome, but the long-term effect the ships could have on the town may not be.

Cliffs of Moher

From Dingle, we drove north to the Cliffs of Moher, a scenic drive that included a 20-minute ferry across the Shannon estuary, connecting Tarbert and Killimer (23 euros; shannonferries.com ). The Cliffs were another hour-drive north.

Towering up to 700 feet above the ocean, the Cliffs stretch for nearly 9 miles along the west coast of Ireland south of Galway. It’s one of the country’s top sites for a reason, with dramatic views in every direction.

Access to what’s called the Cliffs of Moher Experience is via a central entryway that includes a visitors center built into the ground. Admission, including parking, is 10 euros per person during midday, cheaper in the morning or later afternoon.

You can also hike to the cliffs from the nearby towns of Doolin and Liscannor and avoid paying admission, although you won’t be able to access the visitors center.

The central cliffs area can get quite crowded, so come early or late if you can. My husband and I arrived at about 1 p.m., with the midday sun straight overhead, which tended to wash out our photographs.

Some of the viewing areas closest to the visitors center got clogged with people during our stay, but it was easy enough to escape the crowds by walking a bit farther along the coast.

We spent about two hours here, most of it walking along the coastal trail. And I would have stayed longer, but our next destination was calling.

A castle in Clifden

After stopping in Doolin for ice cream, we continued north toward Galway, motoring through an area known as the Burren (literally “rocky place”), a region so completely unexpected amid the green of Ireland. The area, approximately 200 square miles, features a stark landscape of rocky mountains carved from limestone. It was like driving on the moon.

The only unpleasant part of the trip came as we maneuvered through Galway, population 80,000, where we got caught in traffic and delayed by road construction. If I had to do it over again, I would have spent the night here.

Our destination was another 90 minutes northwest, in Clifden. We arrived at our hotel – the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel – just in time to hear owner Ronan Hughes recount the history of the building and the region and offer a complimentary champagne toast to some of the people who made it possible. (Read more about our castle stay here: Castle overnight in Ireland: What’s in a name? )

Clifden is in the heart of Ireland’s Connemara region, another starkly beautiful area of Ireland to explore, with jagged mountains, serene inland lakes and a dramatic coastline to explore.

We rose early to drive the Sky Road, a short, 10-mile loop that offers panoramic views of the ocean, islands and surrounding countryside. Then we took a short walk to check out the ruins of Clifden Castle, built by the same man, John D’Arcy, who founded the town and built Abbeyglen.

And here we encountered one more example of that famous Irish hospitality: The gentleman who owns the land that includes Clifden Castle came outside to tell us the property was private and to please not go inside the structure, because it wasn’t safe. And then he invited us along for an exterior tour of the space.

If I had another day here, I would have toured scenic Kylemore Abbey (built in 1868), hiked Connemara National Park and maybe taken a boat ride on Killany Harbour, Ireland’s only fjord. But time was tight, so we continued our drive north to County Mayo.

Biking through County Mayo

For several decades at the turn of the 19th century, a railroad operated from Westport to Achill Island. In 2010, the rail line was turned into a level, paved path, creating what has to be one of the world’s most spectacular bikeways, the Great Western Greenway , which traverses 27 miles through scenic County Mayo.

We started our trip from Newport, skipping the first 7 miles of the greenway, from Westport to Newport, which I had read was the least scenic part of the route, as it parallels the roadway. The route from Newport was spectacular from start to finish – through farmland and forest, past pastures and lakes, with the Atlantic coast within eyesight through much of it.

We pedaled past horses and cows and sheep – and a handful of humans, too. I imagine it will get much busier as the summer progresses. We stopped for lunch in the tiny town of Mulranny, overlooking Clew Bay, then summoned the energy to finish the final 8 miles to Achill.

My only regret was that we didn’t opt for electric bikes because although this was mostly flat, 20 miles is a lot (for me), and I didn’t need to work that hard.

We did opt for the shuttle ride back, however.

The route ends at the bridge to Achill Island – which, at 57 square miles, is Ireland’s largest island, with cliffs and mountains and some of the country’s most spectacular beaches. It’s a sister city to Cleveland, which is why the group of Northeast Ohio government and business leaders who traveled to Ireland last month spent a night here.

I, however, continued my route north, to Donegal.

But first, I asked our shuttle driver, the owner of Greenway Bicycle Hire in Newport, if he wouldn’t mind driving us the few miles west to see the statue of Johnny Kilbane, the Achill native who found fame in Cleveland as a boxer in the early 1900s.

Though he had never heard of Kilbane, or the statue, he graciously agreed. After I thanked him, I told him I might not be the last Clevelander who makes such a request.

Last stop: Donegal

We ended our tour in the town of Donegal, in Ireland’s northernmost county (also Donegal). Unfortunately, we were here mostly to sleep, before heading to our next stop. Next time, for sure, I’ll allot at least a day or two to explore the rugged coastline in Ireland’s most remote region.

For now, though, our tour came to an end at the Reel Inn, a venue well-regarded for its traditional Irish music offerings.

The place was standing-room only when we entered, filled with the sounds of banjo and button accordion. I eventually secured a couple of seats at a table by the door, where we listened for hours to the lively soundtrack of Ireland’s wild Atlantic coast before returning to our hotel.

Then, the next morning, we were off – to Northern Ireland, to the Antrim Coast and Giant’s Causeway, yet another spectacular coastal region on an island that has so many of them.

Driving in Ireland: Narrow streets, insurance extras and staying on the left side of the road

En route from Dublin to Dingle: Rock of Cashel and Kilkenny Castle

48 hours in Dublin: New Aer Lingus flight from Cleveland makes for an easy international getaway

First flight on Aer Lingus: Go to sleep in Cleveland, wake up in Dublin

(Coming next month: Two days in Northern Ireland: Giant’s Causeway, Belfast and the Titanic museum.)
