The Haunting History

Built by the great King, ‘Madho Singh,’ who happened to be the younger brother of general ‘Emperor Akbar,’ commonly referred to as ‘Man Singh.’ The Bhangarh Fort was constructed after due approval was sought from ‘Guru Balu Nath,’ who used the fort as his place of meditation. The common folk of the region believe that ‘Guru Balu Nath,’ had made King ‘Madho Singh,’ take an oath that the shadows of the fort would not come anywhere near his area of meditation.

Unfortunately, the King did not keep his word/promise. As soon as the shadows of the Bhangarh Fort came close and eventually touched Guru Balu Nath’s spot of mediation, he is said to have cursed the entire village to be roofless for years to come. The curse of Guru Balu Nath is said to exist even today, as any roof constructed in the village collapses every single time.

Yet another story that may unravel the mystery of the fort, is the love story of Princess Ratnavati and Tantrik Singhia. It is believed that Tantrik Singhia had tried multiple times to use magic as an element to winning the heart of  Princess Ratnavati. The princess, on the other hand, was well aware of his evil plans for her and in a rage ordered for the death of Tantrik Singhia.

After having been informed of this gesture by the princess, Tantrik Singhia is said to have cursed all the residents and dwellers of the fort to remain roofless for time immemorial. The village continues to remain roofless even to this day.

What happens in the Bhangarh Fort at night?

All tourists and visitors are forbidden from entering or exploring the Bhangarh Fort or its vicinity anytime after sunset. These instructions have been strictly given by the Archaeological Survey of India. Any traveller who forgoes these instructions are bound to be subject to severe legal consequences and the locals are a testament to the fact that these aren’t just rumours.

Locals have recalled a number of various stories over time as they have to hear the Bhangarh ghosts scream, sounds of bangles, women wailing out loud, and an eerie / rather creepy smell that comes out of the park post dusk!

The authorities have also been told about unusual music sounds, ghostly shadows, and crazy dances that have been heard and seen within the Bhangarh Fort. Yet another mystery and frightening fact about the fort, remains the lingering question of all the Bravehearts that have stayed within the forts post dusk. None of them have returned or been seen appear alive the next morning or for years to come.

Bhangarh Fort Timings

Tourists looking to visit the Bhangarh Fort and explore the haunted pathways that follow must consider the best times to visit the fort before they plan their visit. We would recommend the months between September to February to be the best time to explore the fort. The extreme heave wave that plagues the region of Rajasthan is one of the major reasons for the preference of these months.

The Bhangarh Fort is open for tourists between the hours of 06:00 am to 06:00 pm, respectively. It is strictly forbidden for visitors to roam through the fort or be present anywhere near the vicinity of the fort after this time frame. These are strict rules that have been put forward by the Archaeological Survey of India and need to be followed to the tee.

Legends Associated With Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan

1. haunting bhangarh fort story: the curse of baba balu nath.

Long before the construction of Bhangarh Fort, the tranquil surroundings of Bhangarh Fort served as a meditation place for Baba Balau Nath. The sadhu, a guardian of the mystical energies enveloping the area, granted permission for the fort’s construction, but with one condition.

He said that no structure within the fort could surpass the height of his humble abode to the extent that those buildings must not cast their shadows on his holy abode. Initially, Raja Madho Singh agreed to the conditions and built the magnificent Bhangarh Fort. But a year later when the grandson of Madho Singh – Ajab Singh took over, he decided to add more pillars to extend the height of the fort.

Ignoring the sage’s caution, Ajab Singh dared to raise the fort’s height significantly, casting a shadow upon Baba Balau Nath’s house. This act of Ajab Singh triggered the curse of Baba Balu Nath and the whole down diminished over time.

This seemingly harmless thing caused the sadhu to unleash his curse, and the whole town was wiped out. The power of the curse kept repeating over time so that no one could ever live in Bhangarhi again. The curse was strong enough that no one could ever settle in the village again.

A spine-chilling aftermath unfolded as all the village houses gradually lost their roofs, victims of the relentless curse. Those who tried to settle in the village by rebuilding the roofs of their houses died beneath the weight of collapsing roofs.

2. Haunting Bhangarh Fort Story: Princess Ratnavati and Black Magic

It is said that a tantric priest in Bhangarh was captivated by her beauty. He wished for the princess badly, despite knowing that Princess Ratnavati would marry one of her many suitors from the royal family. The tantric then plotted something to get Princess Ratnavati to marry her.

The tantric knew that the Princess applies scented oil to her hair daily. So one day he replaced the oil with an oil made by him. He infused the oil with some kind of black magic so that when the princess applied this oil, she would start liking the tantric.

Princess Ratnavati had some knowledge about black magic and thus figured out that her hair oil was spiked. In anger, she threw the oil on a big boulder and the black magic reversed onto the tantric. The boulder on which the princess had thrown the oil, rolled a long distance until it crushed the tantric priest.

Right before his death, the angry tantric priest put a dreadful curse on Bhangarh. He said life there would be sad and full of despair, making sure no one could live peacefully. The next year, a big battle went down between Ajabgarh and the Mughal Empire, and thus the entire Bhangarh Fort was diminished.

The Spooky Vibes Of The Bhangarh Fort

Many people who tried to go inside the fort after sunset did not come back or had unfortunate accidents that led to their deaths. Experts say that villagers are trapped inside the fort and their ghosts are haunting it. The guards have reported that the sounds of a daily market can be heard inside the fort as if it is still functioning as it used to in the past. Some people also say that you can see the ghost of Princess Ratnavati inside the fort.

What To See In The Fort of Bhangarh Rajasthan?

These are the Lahori gate, Ajmeri gate, Phulbari gate, and Delhi gate. Even though the fort is in ruins, it still looks grand and brings a sense of serenity to the green environment. At the main entrance of the fort, there are several Hindu Temples. The main temples in the fort are Someshwar Temple, Keshav Rai Temple, Mangla Devi Temple, and Ganesh Temple. 

These temples are a fine example of 17th-century architecture and craftsmanship. They are all built in the Nagara style. The Gopinath temple is built on a 14ft high platform with beautiful carvings on the stones of the temple complex. This temple also houses the head priest’s residence, known as the Purohitji ki Haveli. 

Within the fort area, several grand havelis are in ruins; one of the most prominent of these is the Nartakiyoni ki haveli which was the chambers of dancing girls. The marketplace is located at the extreme edge of the fort’s boundaries, and the royal palace, which was said to be seven storeys high, is now only four storeys high.

Bhangarh Fort

Bhangarh Fort in Alwar district of Rajasthan state is supposed to be the most haunted fort of Rajasthan. Due to this reason the archeological survey of India does not allows anyone to visit the ruins of Bhangarh Fort after the sunset. An official warning for the same has been posted at the Bhangarh fort. The local people confirm the same and remain away from the ruins of Bhangarh Fort.

Situated around 65 kms from the Jaipur city are the ruins of Bhangarh fort which has been termed as the most haunted fort of India. It takes around 1.5 hrs to drive from Jaipur city and around half an hour from Dausa city to reach the Bhangarh Fort.

Amongst the picturesque Aravali hills is situated the haunted city and fort of Bhangarh. The Bhangarh fort was constructed by King Bhagwant das of the Amer royalty, he constructed this fort for his second son Madho singh who was brother of Mansingh the famous army general of Emperor Akbar. The city was complete with palatial complex which was multi storied the city was fortified with high walls and watch towers constructed over the hills. There were bazaars and the city had a good population. Suddenly the city was abandoned and no one lived over here for long. The village is also not very near to the fort. Many stories abound for the desertion of the Bhangarh city and fort. The most famous is that of a curse by a black magician who fell in love with the beautiful princess and sent a bewitched bottle of oil to be applied to the hair of princess Ratnawati. The princess sensed the trap and broke the bottle on a stone. It is said the same stone trampled and killed the black magician who before dying cursed the city which was deserted and abandoned.

The architecture of Bhangarh fort even though now in ruins looks quite inspiring and amazing, the fortification is complete with bastions and gates. The structure has been made with stone and mortar. The palace now in dilapidated conditions was multi storied, the road to the palatial complex has rows of shops which are now in complete ruins. There are many temples in this ruined city and some of them are in extra ordinary fine condition. The top stories of the palatial complex seem to have caved in but the rooms underneath and the stories are in very good conditions.

All the ASI managed monuments operate only in the day time opening at sunrise and closing at sunset but the story of Bhangarh is a little different. Bhangarh fort warning board restricts visit of this place after sunset. This fort came in to prominence because of the stories of being a haunted fort and eerie ghosts strolling in the ruins at night.

Since ages the locals have made it a point not to visit the ruins at night. To prevent any unforeseen incident perhaps the ASI has issued a warning of not visiting the ruins at night as the stories combined with darkness can lead to concoction of reality which infact is not real.

Since ages as the city laid abandoned and turned in to ruins, the stories were concocted and these stories spread around, while we went to know the reality, we found and experienced nothing. Its an excellent historic site where some people come to perform black magic and the tantra(we found signs of the same ), rest as tourists cant visit the ruins at night so we can’t tell about the night circumstances.

Bhangarh fort, Alwar Famous for the historical ruins and the ghost stories, Bhangarh has been regarded as the most haunted place in the country. It is located on the way between Jaipur and Delhi. The Bhangarh Fort is a 17th Century fort in the Alwar district of Rajasthan. It was built by Bhagwant Das for his son Madho Singh I. It was named by Madho Singh after his grandfather Man Singh or Bhan Singh. As soon as you enter through the main gate of the ruined fort city, also known as Bhoot Bangla, it gives a chill down your spine. Within the fort, there are temples, palaces, and Havelis. Apart from that, there are also four more gates for the entry to the fort: the Lahori Gate, the Ajmeri Gate, the Phulbari Gate and the Delhi Gate. There are many Hindu temples at the entrance of the gates. The royal palace is located at the extreme end of the limits of the fort. History The legends who stand behind the Fort of Bhangarh- There are many legends that stand behind the marvelous Bhangarh Fort, Alwar. According to a fable, there was a king; his name was Madho Singh, he built the fort after getting permission from one ascetic who put down one condition that the fort's shadow should never fall over his house. However, there was one successor of Madho Singh who increases the fort's size vertically, which started enveloping the house of the ascetic in its shadow. And soon, as a result, the fort began to meets it ends, and within no time, the Bhangarh Fort, Alwar, got abandoned. There was also another fable, according to that there was a local black magician, who was bewitched by the Aura and beauty of Ratnavati, the Princess of Bhangarh. The magician tried to possess her by casting a spell over Ratnavati's perfume which she would regularly use. However, the Princess came to know of his plan and took the perfume and poured it upon a huge stone boulder. Then the boulder crushed Ratnavati to death. Even the magician, when he was breathing his last, he said that no one will ever be able to live there peacefully, and cursed the whole Bhangarh Fort, Alwar. Since then, the entire fort and its surroundings are believed to be haunted. Architectural Significance The Bhangarh Fort, Alwar, is located at the edge of the vast green stretch between Jaipur and Alwar. With some proximity to the capital city Delhi too, the fort has quite some significance with the medieval city in Shahjahanabad. The fort premises consist of miniature waterfall, temples that lend an air of tranquility and freshness to all its surroundings. Some remnants of old palaces also can be found within the Bhangarh Fort, Alwar. They indicate that once the fort had, it is admirably glorious days. It's not just the haunted stories that make the fort famous, but the fort's architectural significance is pretty strong and marvelous in itself.

Recognized as the most haunted place in the country, Bhangarh fort is situated in Alwar district of Rajasthan. At the edge of the Sariska Tiger reserve, is where it is precisely located, the village around it is scarcely remote. The most interesting fact about the Bhangarh fort are the mythical and paranormal stories associated with the fort which may have been noticed by some or made up by others.

The way to the Bhangarh fort is eerie with all the stories heard though. The once beautiful havelis now in ruins surround the path to Bhangarh fort. There lies Ajabgarh fort in the way to Bhangarh fort also with nothing much but walls to see. It was Madho Singh’s grandson Ajab Singh who took over after Madho Singh’s son Chatar Singh, built the Ajabgarh fort.

The history of Bhangarh fort goes back to17th century during the rule of King Akbar. It was assumed to be built by Man Singh 1, one of the court men also called Navarathnas of Akbar’s palace for his brother Madho Singh 1 in 1793 AD.The ruins of the palace sit at the foot of slope terrains with a pond surrounded by trees and a natural stream of water falling into the pond in the fort premises.

The Archeological Survey of India, the body that is responsible for the preserving the historical monuments of India has put up an ASI marked board at the starting of the fort stating the entry is restricted before sunrise and after sunset into the Bhangarh fort which is usually put at the haunted places in India.

The tales behind the haunting of Bhangarh fort goes in two different directions with narration of two different stories. One detailing about a holy sadhu’s (priest) curse of anger resulting in collapse of the fort and the dynasty alongwith the villagers who vanished and the second one being a tantric (person performing dark magic) well versedin occult and dark magic who jinxed the fort to destruction. There go many tracks to these stories changing the facts and myths from one person to another. But the most perceived stories can be stated as such.

There lived a sadhu Guru Balu Nath on the hills in the area where Bhangarh fort was to be built. Consulting with the holy sadhu about the construction, Raja Bhagwant Singh, father of Madho Singh and Man Singh gave orders to put the foundation for the fort agreeing to the condition put forth by sadhu Balu Nath. The condition was that the shadows of the palace should not fall or cover the home of sadhu Balu Nath, if done so the fort would be ruined to shreds. The Bhangarh fort was built in accordance with the condition put forth by the sadhu up to a certain limit but eventually the king started neglecting the sadhu’s words and the fort kept expanding until the extent where the shadows reached the sadhu’s home. That was when the sadhu Balu Nath cursed the doom of the kingdom, hence it was destroyed and eventually the village around slowly was abandoned. It was rumored that after the fall of the fort trials were made to reconstruct but the roofs always collapsed and no houses were further built.

The Tantric’s curse holds the responsibility of the shambling of Bhangarh fort according to some legends. Princess Ratnavati was the daughter of Chatr Singh who was spoken of, as the jewel of Rajasthan. Suitors from all over the country wanted to woo her in marriage and just then a tantric versed with black magic fell in love with the princess at the sight of her. But he was certain of the fact that it would be impossible to attain her. The tantric hence planned the use of black magic in persuasion of owning her. As he recognized the princess’s fascination for perfumes from the market, he cast a potion spell on the perfume bought for the princess to attain her love. Ultimately the princess got aware of his intentions and crashed the bottle which turned to a boulder and the tantric was killed under it. In the moments before he took his last breath, the tantric cursed the kingdom, villagers and the princess to death. Later in days, the kingdom was invaded by the Mughal emperors and fell as bait, where, as told by folklores all the people of the fort as well as the princess perished. The fort is assumed to be haunted by the tantric’s ghost till date and is anticipated that princess will be reborn in the palace then will the ghost of tantric be gone.

About the fort

There are many presumed stories about incidents happening in and around Bhangarh fort during the dark hours. According to some locals many young groups of students went into the fort after the sunset fort to discover the place after bribing the security in spite of prior warnings but never came back. Also, reportedly who have come back died in some or the other disaster before sunrise. Also, people have been hearing cries of women, music from rooms or have seen paranormal activities in and around. They could be rumors or occurred incidents, but no one has been able to prove or come to any conclusions yet. Even though the ASI prevents from going inside before 6 am or after 6 pm.

The happenings or the so told, do not deterthe tourists or the brave hearts from going since it is safest during the day to have an eventful and exciting day. The stories create hype about the region with dwelling tourists especially during the non-summer season. The adventurous trip to Bhangarh fort is worth experiencing with friends especially keeping in mind the limitations. Since India is a mythical country every historical place is worth visiting.

• Both parents or guardians must approve that we can issue a passport to a child, and go with the child to apply in person.
• If one or both parents or guardians cannot apply with their child, you will need to show us more documents.
• You cannot renew your child's passport using Form DS-82.
• Passports for children under age 16 are only valid for 5 years. 

Steps to Apply

1. fill out form ds-11 and print it.

Tips to complete your child's form :

• Do not sign your child's form until asked to do so by a passport acceptance agent or employee. 
• You can apply for a passport book , a passport card , or both documents.
• You may ask for a larger passport book with more visa pages, at no extra cost, by checking the 'large book' box at the top of the DS-11.

2. Get Evidence of U.S. Citizenship (and a photocopy)

Your evidence must be an original or replacement copy. The document must have the official seal or stamp of the office which issued it. You must submit one of the following documents for your child:

• Issued by the city, county, or state of birth
• Lists applicant's full name, date of birth, and place of birth
• Lists the parent(s)' full names
• Has the date filed with registrar's office (must be within one year of birth)
• Has the registrar's signature
• Has the seal or stamp of the city, county, or state which issued it
• Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
• Certificate of Citizenship
• Please note you must also provide a document, such as a birth certificate, that lists the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of the child. Full validity means the document is or was valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for children under 16.

Paper only : You cannot submit digital evidence of U.S. citizenship such as a mobile or electronic birth certificate. You must submit physical evidence of U.S. citizenship and a photocopy of the document. 

Returning your child's document : We will return your child's document in a separate mailing up to 8 weeks after you receive the new passport.

Tips for making a photocopy :

• Black and white (no color)
• Use 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper
• Use a single side of the paper

If you do not submit a photocopy, you must submit a second copy of your citizenship evidence. We will keep this copy for our records.

3. Show Your Relationship to Your Child

You must submit a document that lists the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of the child. Examples include:

• U.S. birth certificate (also evidence of U.S. citizenship)
• Foreign birth certificate
• Adoption decree
• Divorce or custody decree
• A court order

Some documents, like a U.S. birth certificate, show  both  U.S. citizenship and parental relationship. These documents must be originals or certified copies (not photocopies).

You and your child may have different last names, as long as the document showing your relationship to your child lists your full name.

If your name is different than the one on the document showing your relationship to your child, submit proof of your legal name change.

4. Get a Photo ID (and a photocopy)

Both parents or guardians must bring a physical, photo ID and a photocopy of it. If your photo ID is from a different state than the state in which you are applying, bring a second photo ID. 

You must show at least  one  of these photo IDs:

• Valid or expired, undamaged U.S. passport book or passport card 
• In-state, fully valid driver's license or enhanced driver's license with photo
• Certificate of Naturalization 
• Certificate of Citizenship 
• Government employee ID (city, county, state, or federal)
• U.S. military or military dependent ID
• Current (valid) foreign passport
• Matricula Consular (Mexican Consular ID) used by a parent of a U.S. citizen child applicant
• U.S. Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) used by a parent of a U.S. citizen child applicant
• Trusted Traveler IDs (including valid Global Entry, FAST, SENTRI, and NEXUS cards)
• Enhanced Tribal Cards and Native American tribal photo IDs
• In-state, fully-valid learner's permit with photo
• In-state, fully-valid non-driver ID with photo
• Temporary driver's license with photo

5. Show More Documents (if both parents or guardians cannot apply)

• Both parents or guardians must approve that we can issue a passport to a child, and go with the child to apply in person.
• If one or both parents or guardians cannot apply in person with their child, you will need to show more documents.

Important : Submit  Form DS-3053  and other notarized statements within three months of signing them.

6. Provide a Photo

You must provide one photo with your child's application. Go to our  Passport Photo page  for photo requirements and to see examples of photos. 

• Do not attach or staple your child's photo to the form. The acceptance agent or passport employee will review the photo and staple it to your form.

• Home. Ask your friend or family member to take your child's photo. Print it on glossy or matte photo quality paper. 

7. Calculate Fees

When applying using Form DS-11, you will pay two separate fees - an application fee and an execution (acceptance) fee. You will pay the application fee to the U.S. Department of State, and the execution (acceptance) fee to the facility which takes your application. 

• Add $60 to your application fee if you want  expedited service .
• Add $19.53 to your application fee if you want us to ship your completed passport in 1-2 days after we issue it.

Families may write one check or money order to the U.S. Department of State if they are applying at the same time. The check or money order must include the name and date of birth of each applicant.

8. Find Location to Apply

In the United States:

• Traveling in more than 3 weeks?  Go to a  passport acceptance facility  such as a post office, library, or local government office. Check with the facility to see if you need to make an appointment. 
• Traveling in less than 3 weeks?   Make an appointment  to apply at a passport agency or center.

In another country:

• Contact your  U.S. embassy or consulate .

9. Track Your Application Status

You can  subscribe to email updates  about your application status, and  learn more about each status update .

It may take 2 weeks from the day you apply until your child's application status is “In Process.” 

Frequently Asked Questions

How will you send my child's passport and supporting documents.

You will get multiple mailings. The number of mailings depends on what document(s) you asked for.

Passport Book : You may get your new passport and citizenship documents in two mailings. You may wait 8 weeks after getting your passport before you get a second mailing with your citizenship documents. We will return the passport book using a trackable delivery service.

Passport Card : You may get your new passport card and your citizenship documents in two mailings. You may wait 8 weeks after getting your passport before you get a second mailing with your citizenship documents. We only send the passport card via First Class Mail. We do not send cards using 1-2 day delivery services.

Both a Passport Book and Card : You may get three separate mailings:

• New passport book
• New passport card
• Citizenship documents

Contacting Us : If you have been waiting more than 8 weeks for your documents, call us at  1-877-487-2778  to report that you have not received your documents. 

If you want us to reimburse you for a lost supporting document, you must contact us within 90 days of the date which we mailed your passport. You will also need to provide a receipt to show the cost of replacing the document. 

Can I pay for faster delivery and return shipping?

Yes. You may choose one or both of the following shipment options:

• Delivering application to us : Pay for Priority Mail Express for faster shipping. The price for this service varies depending on the area of the country.
• Returning the passport to you : Pay $19.53 for 1-2 day delivery. This means you will receive your passport   1-2 days after we send it. Include this fee with your check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State. Do not submit a return envelope to us with postage pre-paid. 

You may receive your passport and supporting documents in separate mailings. If you are renewing a passport card, we will send it to you via First Class Mail. We do not use 1-2 day delivery services if you only applied for a passport card.

What countries require Form DS-3053 "Statement of Consent" to be notarized at an embassy or consulate?

In certain countries, a DS-3053 must be notarized at a  U.S. embassy or consulate  and cannot be notarized by a local notary public. Currently, these countries include:
