If you're planning a trip to Miami or Fort Lauderdale, Florida , visiting Everglades National Park should be on your to-do list. The South Florida national park is known for its expansive beauty, as well as its varied population of wildlife that includes everything from bobcats to alligators.

To see all the Everglades has to offer, sign up for a guided tour. U.S. News consulted both traveler sentiment and expert opinion to identify the top Everglades tours. Before you go, make sure you read through the National Park Service's Wildlife Viewing Ethics to keep both yourself and the animals safe during your time in the park. When choosing the best Everglades tours, we avoided recommending operators that promote wildlife shows or encourage feeding or holding the animals for photo-ops.

Visitors should plan to pay a fee to enter the park, as it may not be included in the price of the tour ticket. You should also keep in mind that many of these tour operators are located at least 30 miles west of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Tours that run on airboats – open-air vessels with huge fans at the back that propel the boat – can be very loud. Companies will generally offer ear protection, but if you or your companions are sensitive to loud noises, contact the tour provider to discuss options before you book.

Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures – 30-Minute Airboat Tour

Price: Adults from $35; kids from $30 Duration: 30 minutes

Located at the headwaters of the Everglades in Kissimmee, Florida (about 40 miles south of Orlando), Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures earns praise from reviewers for its personable, experienced staff and the family-friendly environment. On the airboat ride, you and up to 16 other passengers will glide through the tall grass in search of eagles, alligators, raccoons and more. In addition to airboat rides, the site houses a replica of a Jororo Tribe village, as well as a gem and fossil mining activity for kids.

Tours depart throughout the day from 9 a.m. to 5 pm. You can buy your tickets online, but there are no reservations for this tour. For a longer adventure, consider the company's hourlong airboat ride. There are also sunset and night tours, if you're hoping to avoid the midday heat and crowds.

Marsh Landing Adventures – 90-Minute Everglades Airboat Tour

Price: Adults from $65; kids from $60 Duration: 1.5 hours

For wildlife lovers who want more than half an hour to experience the Everglades, this 1.5-hour airboat ride from Marsh Landing Adventures is an excellent experience. Located in Kissimmee on Lake Tohopekaliga, Marsh Landing Adventures promises travelers an in-depth look at the headwaters of the Everglades and the plants and animals that inhabit its waters. What's more, the company says it can reach areas of the Everglades that are inaccessible to larger boats because of its small crafts. Travelers give kudos to the boat captain for their educational and entertaining delivery. Many call the experience the highlight of their Florida vacation.

Tours are offered Monday through Saturday at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Reservations are required, and there is a 1% fuel surcharge added to each ticket. Marsh Landing Adventures also offers hourlong, two-hour and four-hour airboat rides.

Everglades City Airboat Tours

Price: Adults from $47; kids from $31 Duration: 1 hour

Everglades City Airboat Tours sets itself apart from other companies by offering participants two-way headsets, which allow passengers and guides to better engage with one another throughout the hourlong ride. As you navigate through narrow creeks and shallow bays, you may spot alligators, manatees and birds. Tourists enjoy the ride and appreciate the headsets. Reviewers are also complimentary of the boat captains, who they describe as entertaining and knowledgeable.

Tours depart multiple times Monday through Saturday, although timing may be modified based on the season. It's a good idea to reserve your tour in advance. Everglades City Airboat Tours is located approximately 85 miles west of Miami and 35 miles southeast of Naples, Florida.

Buffalo Tiger Airboat Tours – 45-Minute Standard Airboat Tour

Price: Adults from $45; kids from $27.50 Duration: 45 minutes

For an excursion that combines cultural immersion and wildlife viewing, consider this outing from Buffalo Tiger Airboat Tours. The Miccosukee family-owned company's standard tour focuses on introducing visitors to the homelands of the Miccosukee people: an American Indian tribe that migrated to Florida before it became a state. During the tour, you'll not only see local wildlife, but also will get to see a Miccosukee Indian camp and take a nature walk. Visitors recommend the tour, describing it as an amazing experience thanks to the small, intimate group size.

Tours run daily at multiple times between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The company also offers private outings.

Everglades River of Grass Adventures – Semi-Private River of Grass Airboat Tours Everglades

Price: Adults from $85; kids from $45 Duration: 1.5 hours

One perk of this tour is that it is capped at six to eight travelers per boat. During the excursion, you'll get the chance to see the famous flora and fauna of the Everglades, including herons and alligators. Visitors say this is a family-friendly tour and call the trip "memorable" and "amazing."

These tours run seven days a week; since they're semiprivate, you must call or email to find out the best times to depart. River of Grass Adventures also offers sunset tours of the Everglades.

Shurr Adventures Everglades – Three Hour Mangrove Tunnel Kayak Tour Small Group Adventure

Price: Adults from $109; kids from $99 Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Enjoy an up-close view of animals and nature, and get some exercise in too, on this kayak tour of the Everglades' mangroves. As you paddle your way through the mangrove tunnels, you may spot orchids, birds and, of course, alligators. Kayakers say this tour is excellent and appreciate the patient, experienced guides who share a wealth of information about the plants and animals that reside in this unique ecosystem. What's more, reviewers appreciate that the tours are limited to just eight participants.

Tours are available Monday through Saturday from August to April; times vary by season. Children must be at least 7 years old to participate. Tourgoers will enjoy three to 3.5 hours out on the water but should plan to spend a total of four hours on-site from start to finish. Shurr Adventures Everglades also offers a full-day tour of the mangrove tunnels, as well as a motorboat tour in the Ten Thousand Islands region of Everglades National Park, among other options.

Shark Valley Tram Tours

These naturalist-led excursions not only include a tour around Everglades National Park in an open-air tram, they also give tourgoers the chance to explore on foot. Halfway through the tour, participants can climb a 45-foot-tall observation deck to see sweeping views of the surrounding vegetation. During the two-hour tour, travelers also have the opportunity to observe a variety of wildlife. Tourgoers enjoy learning about the Everglades from the expert guides and say riding the tram is part of the fun. Many also recommended taking a morning tour to avoid the midday heat.

From mid-December through late April, tours depart on the hour daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. From May through mid-December, tours depart at 9:30 and 11 a.m. and 2 and 4 p.m. Shark Valley Tram Tours also offers self-guided bike tours. (Note that you'll have to pay a separate fee to enter Everglades National Park for any tour.)

Everglades Florida Adventures – Ten Thousand Islands Tour

Price: Adults from $59; kids from $29 Duration: 3 hours

If you're hoping to see the Everglades by boat, but want something a little quieter than an airboat ride, consider this cruise. Departing from Port of the Islands Marina in Naples, this 45-foot passenger catamaran glides across the Faka Union Canal while guides share information about the history and ecology of the area. Tourgoers report spotting lots of birds, turtles, dolphins and manatees. They also call out the insightful crew and clean, comfortable boat as highlights.

Cruises are offered Monday to Friday at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Everglades Florida Adventures also offers kayak and canoe rentals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Like any other form of transportation, riding an airboat may come with some risks. To stay safe on your Everglades airboat tour, be sure to choose a company run by experienced, professional boaters (most of which undergo special training and are approved by the U.S. Coast Guard) and adhere to all rules set forth by your guide. Parents should keep a close eye on children and be sure they are properly fitted for their life jackets, and all passengers should protect against the heat by wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated. Commercial airboats typically do not exceed speeds of 30 to 40 mph to ensure a safe, smooth ride, and most operators will reschedule your tour in the event of lightning or other inclement weather. Tour companies will also generally provide riders with proper ear protection, as the boats are quite loud.

Typically, passengers will feel the most comfortable in lightweight, sleeveless clothing and shorts while on an Everglades airboat tour. If you are taking a wintertime tour, keep an eye on the weather – pants and long sleeves may be a better option, but you likely won't need a heavy jacket. Be sure to bring sunglasses, sunscreen and water to protect yourself from the effects of the sun; you may also want a hat to provide further shade and keep hair in place. Passengers with long hair are advised to wear it in a ponytail or bun to keep it from becoming knotted in the wind. Tourgoers may also wish to apply some bug spray prior to embarking on their adventure.

Airboat tours last about an hour, though duration will depend on the tour company.

An airboat's top speed is about 30 mph.

Not normally, but you run a small risk of getting misted with water. If you take a tour when it is raining, expect to get wet.

In winter, you'll want to time your visit for midday, when it warms up. In summer, you'll want to visit in the morning or later afternoon when it's coolest. Visiting at these times can increase your chances of seeing wildlife, but you'll likely see all kinds of critters no matter when you visit year-round.

“There is something about flying down narrow alleys of mangrove trees that is just a rush. I could never get tired of it. The guides always give more than just a ride. You learn so much about the Everglades and the total ecosystem that it is. We most certainly will be back!

—C. from Florida

“The mangrove tour was so much fun! We saw a family of dolphins swimming along the boat, several alligators, and a few fish jumping out of the water. Riding through the mangroves was beautiful and a fun way to see the Everglades. I would recommend to anyone.”

—J. from Massachusetts

“We really enjoyed seeing the alligators. The captain of the airboat gave a lot of information about the Everglades and habitat. The addition of the two-way headsets let us all communicate during the tour. This was really a highlight of having friends down visiting us new Florida residents. Plan to bring other guests."

—K. from Florida

“We did the combo package and it was amazing! Great way to experience all 3 ways to 'see' the Everglades! Would highly recommend. All the captains for each segment were fantastic! Had a great time!"

Captain Dougs

I am Captain Doug, owner of Captain Doug’s Airboat Tours in Everglades City, Florida. Thank you for taking the time to visit my web site.

I want you to know that I DID NOT change the name of my business. There was a company that was using my name illegally for over two years. We prevailed in this matter and now our family name is back where it belongs.

I would like to invite you to come and enjoy an airboat tour with my family. I no longer handle the daily operations of the business, but my family does. I retired in 2007 after 25 years of being in the tour business. Over the years I was able to teach and pass down the family heritage and traditions to my son’s. Today they keep my visions, passion, and love for the business alive. I’m happy to see my hard work and training still being used today, just as I was taught by my forefathers. You can usually find me at one of the two places these days just hanging out talking to our customers.

Captain Mitch, my son’s place –  Captain Mitch’s Airboat Tours, located at 31000 US 41 (Tamiami Trail) East, Everglades City, FL. Here at this location we do a grass lands tour of the Everglades .   To learn more about this tour go to his website: www.captainmitchs.com .

11 Best Everglades Airboat Tours South Florida (and 1 thing we regret!)

Looking for the best Everglades Airboat Tours?

There is really no doubt that an Everglades Airboat Ride is one of the best ways to explore the Everglades National Park in Florida.

But with so many possible tours available, the decision about which tour to pick is agonising! We spent hours searching the net to determine which one to select.

In this guide, we have broken down what you should consider when selecting an everglades airboat tour and also outlined which tours we believe are the very best airboat tours in the glades!

Tip: One great option to fit in an Everglades tour is on a road trip from Miami to Key West !

Best Everglades Airboat Tours: Which Everglades Airboat Ride is the Best?

What we discovered from airboat tours is most operators have exactly the same policies in terms of the environment and animals (probably due to the tight policies in place by the National Park)

What is most important when selecting an airboat operator is the reviews they are receiving. This gives you a good idea of 1. how ethical they are and 2. what kind of experience other travelers are having with this company.

Things you will want to look for when choosing an airboat tour include:

  • Environmental policies
  • Policies to do with wildlife (do they feed the wildlife – aka not good!!)
  • The ratings of the tour guides (can see the score of the tour when you go to book)

We have done the hard work for you and selected 11 Best Rated Everglades Airboat tours in the Everglades.

One thing about airboat tours is that they are all not particularly environmentally friendly and have some negative effects on the environment. If you are a greenie, you may want to consider if you would like to take an airboat tour at all (if you are thinking this – we have some alternative ways to see the Everglades below).

We were personally still comfortable to take an airboat tour as the National Park system have taken positive steps to reduce the risk to the fragile ecosystem of the Everglades by make operators run their airboat tours outside of the National Park borders in a certain zone for airboats.

Best Way to See the Everglades

Arguably, the best way to see the Everglades National Park is by going a airboat tour. This is because 50+% of the Everglades is covered by water and only accessible by the airboat tours. If you also want to explore the Everglades by foot, see our guide to the 15 Best Hiking Trails in the Everglades .

The other big tip we would have for you is to see the Everglades  by hiring your own car and DIY.

By hiring your own car, you reduce the expense of transportation on tours and you have the flexibility to see more of the cool things that the Everglades has to offer.

Before we get to which airboat tours you should select let’s first briefly discuss the cool other activities you might like to do in the Everglades National Park.

  • Best Walk in the Everglades – Aside from an airboat tour, the best walk to get up close and personal with wildlife in the Everglades National Park is on the Anhinga Trail . If you would like to get up close and personal with an alligator (just not toooo close!!!) this is your best bet.
  • Best Bike Ride in the Everglades – Shark Valley in the Everglades is a great place to go if you love bike riding! The 15 mile Shark Valley trail is perfect for bike riding enthusiasts. You can also catch a tram if you are less active.
  • Where to Get Information about the Wildlife – Ernest Coe Visitor Centre is a great way to get a better insight into the fragile eco-system of the Everglades. Rangers are happy to tell you about the best walks and hikes nearby and if you have kids, they will absolutely love the interactive exhibits at the centre.
  • Best Shaded Walk – One part about the Everglades is that is insanely hot and I mean insane-ly hot. One hidden gem we discovered last time we were there was the Gumbo Limbo trail which is one of the very few trails in the Everglades with shade. Note: not much wildlife on this walk!

How long is the Everglades Tour + What happens?

Most tours last for 30-40 minutes which is a perfect amount of time to stay entertained on the water without getting bored. The best airboat tour of the Everglades should go for this amount as it is the perfect time for you not to feel bored.

During this time, a guide will give you lots of information about the Everglades. This is one of the big reasons I would recommend a tour. Our tour guide was fun and informative and told us lots of fun facts!

While spotting a Florida alligator is never guaranteed (they are wild animals after-all), an airboat tour gives you the absolute best chance of seeing one pretty much anywhere in the Everglades.

We saw several alligators on our tour and our guide informed us that it is very rare not to see an alligator on a tour. Aside from alligators you can see several birds and fish on the tour.

Personally, I don’t think it was actually the wildlife I ended up to be the most impressed with but the absolutely stunning scenery everywhere you look!

Do you get wet on an airboat?

It is highly likely you will get a little wet on the airboat ride so be prepared for that. It is unlikely that you will get completely drenched.

If you do not want to get wet, we would recommend sitting middle & centre.

Are airboat tours safe? Any deaths?

I thought the exactly same question before our airboat tour and looked straight online.

Airboat tours are generally safe and we felt in nothing but safe hands during our entire tour.

There are some reports that say that airboats are still a risky way to explore the Everglades due to the slim possibility that the airboat overturns and throws passengers into the water.

To give you some idea of your risk levels, as of 2018, there were 75 accidents, 100 injuries and 7 deaths associated with airboats.

While this does seem like a large number, if you compare the stats to car accidents, you will find that the risk is quite slim.

In the unlikely event that you do fall in, an alligator is unlikely to kill you. Unlike the Australian crocodile, they are not that aggressive. Don’t too close though and test that theory!

How much is an Airboat ride in the Everglades? (+ any extra fees)

A airboat tour without transport from a major city in Florida will cost you around $30 pp (give or take a few dollars depending on the company).

Once you present your prepaid Everglades ride you are required to pay a $3 national park fee.

To explore more of the Everglades National Park you will need a National Park pass which costs $30 per car valid for 7 days. The $3 you spend on the airboat tour will be deducted from the National Park fee.

Your tour guide will also expect a tip at the end of the tour. The guides will inform you that airboat operators make their wage primarily of the tips they receive.

What do you wear on an Everglades Airboat Tour?

The Everglades is an insanely hot destination year round. For this reason we would highly recommend wearing covered clothes on the tour to avoid sun damage.

Don’t wear hats, sunglasses or anything likely to fly away as 1. it is very windy and 2. you will not likely be able to retrieve it.

Best Everglades Tours if you have your own car: Best Airboat Tour Everglades City

As we mentioned above, if you have more than a day, we would highly recommend hiring a car to explore the Everglades. If you take this option, you will not need to pay extra for transport from a major city in Florida.

Everglades City is arguably the best place for airboat rides in the Everglades.

The best airboat tour in the Everglades that we would recommend if you have your own car include:

  • Florida Everglades Airboat Tour and Wild Florida Admission with Optional Lunch
  • Florida Everglades Airboat Adventure
  • Boggy Creek Airboat Tour

Best Everglades Tours in Florida with Transportation Included: From Miami, Orlando etc

If you only have a day to dedicate to the Everglades and you just want to make life easy for yourself by not hiring a car, there are plenty of great Everglades Tours from major cities in Florida.

If you want to get a reasonably priced airboat tour with transport it is best to select a city not too far from the Everglades – Miami or Fort Lauderdale are good options.  They also happen to usually be the cheapest place to get a flight into Florida.

Here are the best everglades airboat tours with transport included:

  • Everglades Tour from Miami
  • Private Airboat Tour from Miami
  • Economy Option from Miami
  • Everglades Tour from Orlando
  • Everglades Tour from Fort Lauderdale

Best Everglades Airboat Tour Near Naples

If you are starting from Naples in Florida, there are some fabulous and very unique tours of the Everglades you can do including:

  • Everglades National Park Kayak Eco Tour from Naples

Best Swamp Tours in Florida

While the Everglades is not exactly a ‘swamp’ it is many people’s first impression. Here are the best swap tours of the Everglades in Florida including a night ‘swamp’ tour.

  • Air Boat Tours Palm Beach (The Swamp Monster)
  • Night time Swamp Tour

Best Airboat Tour Everglades so you can see more of Florida

If you are low on time in Florida, we would highly recommend selecting a tour that included an additional fun activity in Florida.

One of our absolute highlights of being in Florida was getting to swim with manatees so if you don’t have time to do this on another day, we would 100% recommend combining this with your airboat tour.

The Kennedy Space Centre is another really cool activity to schedule in for a Florida vacation. If you are a geek at heart, you will LOVE this. This might actually be Mike’s favorite thing we did in Florida.

The best airboats tours that you get to see more of Florida include:

  • Everglades Tour including manatee swim
  • Everglades Tour including Biscayne Bay Cruise
  • Everglades Tour including Kennedy Space Centre

Best Alligator Airboat Tour Everglades?

If you are looking for the best alligator tour in the Everglades, we don’t have much advice for you there. As Alligators as wild animals no tour is any better than the other in this regard.

We would however, recommend checking out the reviews of the tours as sometimes the individual guides have a knack of knowing where the alligators hang out. IMO, all good Everglades airboat tour operators should be trained in this regard to give you the best chance possible of spotting them on the tour.

Our thoughts on Everglades Airboat Tours: Our 1 Regret

If you can’t tell already, we highly recommend taking an airboat tour of the Everglades.

We have experienced the Everglades both ways now – by foot and also by an Everglades Tour and I think the tour has the slight upper hand if you can only pick one as you get to see the true beauty of the Everglades which is hard to see on land.

At the end of many of the airboat tours, the operators give you the chance to hold a baby alligator. We loved this at the time.

He or She was soooo cute and their skin was incredibly soft however, in hindsight we probably wouldn’t man-handle a baby alligator again as keeping animals in captivity and allowing them to be held by the public makes their transition into the wild very difficult.

So will you be taking an airboat tour in the Everglades or do you prefer to explore this National Park on foot?

Everglades Airboat Tours

Everglades Airboat Tours

An airboat (also known as a planeboat, swamp boat, bayou boat, or fanboat) is a flat-bottomed watercraft propelled by an aircraft-type propeller and powered by either an aircraft or automotive engine. They are commonly used for fishing, recreation, and ecotourism.

Airboats are a common means of transportation in marshy and/or shallow areas where a standard inboard or outboard engine with a submerged propeller would be impractical, most notably in the Florida Everglades but also in the Kissimmee and St. Johns rivers, and the Mekong River and Delta, as well as the Louisiana bayous.

The characteristic flat-bottomed design of the airboat, in conjunction with the fact that there are no operating parts below the waterline, allows for easy navigation through shallow swamps and marshes; in canals, rivers, and lakes; and on ice and frozen lakes. This design also makes it ideal for flood and ice rescue operations.

The airboat is pushed forward by the propeller, which produces a rearward column of air behind it. The resulting prop wash averages 150 miles per hour (241 km/h). Steering is accomplished by diverting that column of air left or right as it passes across the rudders, which the pilot controls via a “stick” located on the operator’s left side. Overall steering and control is a function of water current, wind, water depth, and propeller thrust. Airboats are very fast compared to comparably-sized motorboats: commercial airboats generally sail at speeds of around 35 miles per hour (30 kn) and modified airboats can go as fast as 135 miles per hour (117 kn)

Stopping and reversing direction are dependent upon high operator skill, since airboats, like most boats, do not have brakes. They are incapable of traveling in reverse, unless equipped with a reversible propeller. Some designs use a clam shell reversing device intended for braking or backing up very short distances but these systems are not commonly used.

The operator and passengers, are typically seated in elevated seats that allow visibility over swamp vegetation. High visibility lets the operator and passengers see floating objects, stumps and other submerged obstacles, and animals in the boat’s path.

Glenn Curtiss is credited with building an early type of airboat in 1920 to help facilitate his hobby of bow and arrow hunting in the Florida backwoods. The millionaire, who later went on to develop the cities of Hialeah and Miami, combined his talents in the fields of aviation and design to facilitate his hobby, and the end result was Scooter, a 6-passenger, closed-cabin, propeller-driven boat powered by an aircraft engine that allowed it to slip through wetlands at 50 miles per hour (43 kn).

Airboats began to become popular in the United States in the 1930s, when they were independently invented and used by a number of Floridians, most living in or around the Everglades. Some Floridians who invented their own airboats include frog hunter Johnny Lamb, who built a 75-horsepower airboat in 1933 he called the “whooshmobile” and Chokoloskee Gladesmen Ernest and Willard Yates, who built an airboat in 1935 they steered via reins attached to a crude wooden rudder. Yates holds the ignominious honor of being the first person to die in an airboating accident, when the engine dislodged and sent the spinning propeller into him.

An improved airboat was invented in Utah in 1943 by Cecil Williams, Leo Young, and G. Hortin Jensen. Their airboat, developed and used near Brigham City, Utah, is sometimes erroneously called the first airboat. At the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge in northern Utah, Cecil S. Williams and G. Hortin Jensen sought a solution to the problem of conducting avian botulism studies in the shallow, marshy hinterlands. By installing a 40-horsepower Continental aircraft engine, purchased for $99.50, on a flat-bottomed 12-foot long aluminum boat, they built one of the first modern airboats. Their airboat had no seat, so the skipper was forced to kneel in the boat. They dubbed it the Alligator I as a response to a joking comment from US Fish and Wildlife Service headquarters that they should “get an alligator from Louisiana, saddle up and ride the critter during their botulism studies.” Their airboat was the first to use an air rudder (a rudder directing the propeller exhaust rather than the water), a major improvement in modern airboat design.

The purpose of Williams, Young, and Jensen’s airboat was to help preserve and protect bird populations and animal life at the world’s largest migratory game bird refuge. The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge near Brigham City, Utah is a wetlands oasis amid the Great Basin Desert and an essential stopping point for birds migrating across North America. The need for a practical way to navigate a challenging environment of wetlands, shallow water, and thick mud helped inspire Williams, Young, and Jensen to create the flat-bottom airboat, which they initially called an “air thrust boat.” Designs and subsequent improvements and practical use of the air thrust boats appears to have been a collaborative effort. LeeRue Allen, who worked at the Refuge since 1936 appears to have also been involved and helped to document a history of the events.

Many of the early airboats built at the refuge in Utah were shipped to Florida . Early records show it cost roughly $1,600 to build a boat, including the engine.

Over the years, the standard design evolved through trial-and-error: an open, flat bottom boat with an engine mounted on the back, the driver sitting in an elevated position, and a cage to protect the propeller from objects flying into them.

**Family Friendly review** What a great experience!! We booked our reservation to ride on the GREAT BLUE last week and making reservations online was simple. The boat holds 10 people (one person sits next to the boat captain). The boat is narrow with three (3) rows of two (2) captain seats, a seat that holds three (3) people, and then a single seat next to the bot captain. Unlike most showy "Tiger King" style tours where you get to see a gator fed and hold a gator and get photo ops, this one is NOTHING like that which I LOVED!!! This was all about the beauty of history of the EVERGLADES and the habitat that lives there. It means so much more when it is like that. Our reservation was for 12 and we showed up at 11:30, but you really don't get on until right before your time because they really give you the 50+ minute ride. (There is no shade here, so sitting in your cool car is helpful). There is a portable bathroom nearby which was surprisingly clean. To get there-- hop on Loxahatchee and when you think it is going to end..keep going. When you hit gravel..look for the tour guide parking. Things to remember: Sunblock! Sunglasses! If you wear a hat, make sure it fits well so it doesn't blow off.

Growing up in Florida I thought I knew more about alligators than the average person, but I learned a lot more (+ saw a lot of gators) during this Airport Tour. We booked an 11:30am tour for our family of 5 a few days ahead of time online. The email confirmation you receive doesn't provide the time you booked it for so make sure to write it down (especially if your mind slips into vacation mode like mine does). I wasn't exactly sure on the time, but the evening before we received a call saying that one of their guides had an emergency so they were canceling some of the tours. They asked if we could do a 12pm tour instead, which worked fine for our schedule. We were lucky to have this tour on a warm, sunny December day. My kids were complaining about the sun in their eyes and the heat while we were waiting for the airboat (bring hats and sunglasses for all), but all complaints ended as soon as the airboat took off. It was a gorgeous day to be on a boat and that alone made me happy. The alligators were an added bonus. I assumed we would see a few alligators, but we saw dozens. Our very informative tour guide stopped several times to point out alligators and shared a ton of info. He mentioned they really like the sun so our sunny day probably helped with so many sightings. The 50 minute tour was the perfect amount of time. I think my 9, 7 and 4 year old enjoyed the actual boat ride (especially the faster parts) and seeing the alligators. The information itself was a bit dry so I think they were a bit bored at times and it definitely went over my 4 year old's head. I was also a bit surprised they don't make you wear life jackets (especially the kids) on the boat, but then again you don't want to fall off into alligator land life vest or not. It was a fun activity and something new to try during our frequent trips to Florida, but definitely a one time thing (especially for the cost) and probably wouldn't do it again. I almost consider myself an alligator expert now.

You can buy tickets online. We were in Coral Springs, so it was a short drive up University to a left on Loxahatchee and drive til the two lane ends. There's a two story white building on the left, but just go past it and look for the sign that guides you to the left down near the4 canal. $65 per person for about a one hour airboat tour of the marsh and adjacent canal with frequent stops to see the sights and hear what Capt. Lyle had to say about what he showed us. We got there at 12:30pm on a Saturday to find things were a little off schedule for our 1pm tour. We shoved off about 1:40pm. No big deal. It was a sunny day, highs about 87F, so after getting our signed in wrist bands, the wind died down and it got hot so we headed for the shade of a small stand of trees at the head of the road. There's a porta-pot about another hundred feet, just in case....but it's not obvious from the launch site on the shore of the canal. Loading the airboat has to be done with some care because, as with small airplanes, weight distribution is critical. Everyone gets their own noise blocking headphones because siting in front of that engine can get loud. Seats are comfortable. I took my cell phone for pictures and wedged it between the seat and my leg when not using it. Once we were out on the water, the breeze kept us cool. Capt. Lyle, a long-time native, did a great job of explaining what we saw. Do think to use some sun tan lotion before you get there. You'll be sitting, so leg tops, arms, neck, face should all be protected. We came prepared and were OK. Bring small cameras. We had water, but left it in the car because the seating was comfortable, but didn't have any place to stow a can or bottle. We saw about half a dozen alligators, quite a few birds, kudzu, tall grass and all kinds of vegetation that Capt. Lyle pointed out and explained to us. He's obviously the right guy for the job and sort of lights up in telling us about the place.

Captain Lyle has lived the swamp for over 40 years. He told us more than a thing or two about this fresh water preserve.

My husband and I took an airboat ride with Loxahatchee Everglades Airboat Tours this past weekend with Marc Thomas as our tour guide, and we had a very pleasant experience. We took an afternoon tour, as Marc had reached out to us earlier in the morning, and suggested rescheduling from the morning to the afternoon, when the weather would be warmer and more pleasant, as it was unusually cold for a south Florida winter morning. Marc was very knowledgeable with Everglades, with the history of the region and the wildlife that lives within, while pointing some of them out during our tour. The airboat ride was very comfortable and Marc made it a very memorable one, as he concerned himself with the comfort and the satisfaction of the guests on his airboat. I would highly recommend Loxahatchee Everglades Airboat Tours, and Marc as your tour guide.

Lived in Florida for over 30 years, 1st airboat ride! Had a great time on our excursion today. Mark, our guide, was super friendly and knowledgeable! We saw several gators, birds, iguanas and even a turtle. So interesting to learn the importance of this ecosystem and ways we can work to help save it. Learned a lot today and could have stayed out there all day. Had the pleasure of meeting Lyle as well! Friendly service, clean boat, knowledgeable guide! Don't hesitate to book!

We heard a great time, tour went over a little which was not an issue, our tour guide was polite, knowledgeable and passionate about what he was doing, we would recommend this tour it was worth it.

Let me start by saying I am not one to write reviews but when a review or compliment is deserved it should most defiently be given! If I could give more than 5 stars I certainly would! The price was so reasonable especially compared to the other tour places that I googled. The boat ride was 50 minutes long which was a good amount of time (especially with a younger child). If there is room for a few extra minutes they allowed it. Please DO NOT stop reading this review ! Read all the way to the bottom to know just how wonderful this experience and place was! My 8 year old son and I took an airboat tour today (November 6th, 2020) at Loxahatchee Everglades Airboat Tours and Rides in Parkland, FL. I cannot rant and rave enough about how amazing this tour was! My son and I happened to be the only two on the 11am boat tour. We had originally booked for 1pm but I called first thing in the morning to see if they were able to accommodate us at a different time (same day though). I spoke to Mark on the phone and he informed me that you get the most animal activity earlier in the morning because the hotter it gets the less the animals want to be in the sun (which makes sense). Mark was also our tour guide and extremely informative! He not only provided an amazing amount of information but answered any questions that my son or myself asked. You can tell that he truly enjoys his job based on the smiles he had when informing us on things. I am happy that I took Mark's advice of going earlier since my son and I did see a great amount of wild life. 2 alligators fully out of the water, two back in the brush, and one floating along in the water. The different sizes and colors of iguanas that we saw too was pretty intriguing. Mark informed us about the different types of birds, ones that we saw and others that are in the general area even if we didn't see them. He really gets you up as close to the wild life as possible! It is amazing! Mark is truly passionate about being an advocate for preserving the Everglades and informing us the history of what it use to be and what it is now. I found it very fascinating that some of the vegetation is used for medicine and he was able to point it out to us! I genuinely feel bad that I only had $10 as a tip since he totally deserved way more!!! I even asked if he had other payment platforms but we ended up not having any of the same ones. :( Did you know that you can get an idea of how long an alligator is even by seeing only it's head? Each inch from the tip of the nose to the eyes is about about how many feet the alligator is. Did you also know that alligators kill off Algae in their mouth by keeping it open . The sun kills it off . Without doing that it can cause a bacteria that could get into their stomach and harm them. My son and I learned that thanks to Mark!!! Thank you so much for an enjoyable memorable time Mark!! Keeping being awesome.

Don't take this trip! Book with one if the other many many tour operators available. #1. It's way too expensive $60 each for a 50 minute tour? That's $1.20 per minute to ride on an airboat? Really? #2. Wastes way too much time. You're asked to show up 30 minutes early for some reason. There is not even so much as a bench to sit on while you wait! #3. They publish a schedule, and you book a specific time, but in reality, you just show up, get your wrist band and get in line with whoever else is there. They don't adhere to their schedule AT ALL! #4. It's run out of the back of an SUV, and you have to guess where to go to get a ticket. Good luck. It was 12:20,, I'd been there since 11:30, as instructed, and the boat driver was just standing there giggling with the girl working the SUV trunk. When I told the guide " Wild Lisle" that I had to drop a guest off at the airport this afternoon and planned on being back at 12:50 from my 12:00 departure, so maybe we could leave sometime soon?......he got all irate and bitched me out like it was my fault. Skip this place. Lots of other good options.

Photo of Cara B.

Went on a tour with my mom a few weeks ago and it was cool but not very exciting. We did not see any alligators besides two little baby ones. I was expecting to see some big gators in the everglades if I knew I wasn't going to then I would have spent the $50 a person and went to the zoo where I know I will definitely be seeing animals. Overall, I do not think I would go again because of the price point and the chance of not seeing anything.

A local’s guide to the Everglades

The first time you visit the Everglades, you begin to comprehend just how much of it is vast nothingness. Pristine and largely inaccessible, it’s a flat, wet terrain not really meant for humans. Because Everglades National Park is often called the country’s most threatened park , that’s fortunate for the plants and animals that call it home. For visitors, that means views here are spread out and typically low to the ground: alligators and mangroves spotted on foot, by bicycle, kayak or from the back of a whizzing airboat.

Sadly, the Everglades are ravaged by human influences, including the decimation of Seminole , Calusa and other Native American tribes by disease and forcible removal, the disruption of water flow with the building of a 20th-century canal system and the modern-era crisis of invasive species . A trip to the park is an opportunity to appreciate the survival of the Everglades’s natural beauty despite all that.

The rural communities surrounding the park are another exciting reason to visit, offering a glimpse of a Florida that’s more Carl Hiaasen than Jimmy Buffett, more johnboat than Caribbean-bound cruise. Things move slower here. You might as well do the same.

How to get there

A car is essential to see the sprawling (and sometimes remote) attractions of Everglades National Park. If you’re flying into Southwest Florida International Airport to stay on Florida’s west coast, you’ll most likely enter the park through the Shark Valley Visitor Center on U.S. Highway 41. If you’re flying into Fort Lauderdale or Miami airports on the east coast, you can choose to visit the park via Shark Valley or venture farther south at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center in Homestead. There is no public transportation to the park, and the National Park Service does not recommend arriving via ride-hailing apps because return transportation is often unavailable.

The best time to visit

For much of the year, South Florida is muggy and hot, making a summertime trip to the Everglades less than ideal. Hurricane season , from June to November, brings its own sense of unpredictability. The winter season, from December to March, is typically the busiest time of the year for good reason — the weather is more likely to be pleasant, the mosquitoes are dormant and human visitors are generally less cranky.

Where to stay

Coral Gables

A quick drive from Miami International Airport, this picturesque city has easy access to the park’s two main entrances. The historic Biltmore Hotel — and its on-site golf course and spa — offer old-school luxury in the heart of the Gables, while the boutique Hotel St. Michel has more affordable accommodations in a walkable area close to the action. There’s also no shortage of Airbnb options for groups, families or those who crave more privacy. If you want to check off two national parks on your trip, you can also book a boat tour of the nearby Biscayne National Park, which is 95 percent water .

Everglades City

If you’re looking for a laid-back vibe in the heart of the Everglades, this fishing village is where you want to be. The Everglades Adventures Hotel Suites by Ivey House is a no-frills option that’s walkable to everything in town. If you’re looking to camp, try the adults-only Everglades Isle RV Resort , also in town, or the Trail Lakes Campground in nearby Ochopee for tent campsites or cabin rentals. You can also book a stay in a chickee hut , traditionally an open structure built with a thatched roof in Seminole and Miccosukee communities. Clyde Butcher’s swamp cottages has a secluded two-bed, two-bath cottage and a one-bed, one-bath bungalow available for rent in Ochopee.

More sleepy than Miami but more lively than Everglades City, Naples is another base camp option within a reasonable distance of the park. The centrally located Inn on Fifth is a pricey hotel on Naples’s bustling Fifth Avenue South, while the Naples Garden Inn is a budget option that is a quick drive to the beach and restaurants. And, of course, there are plenty of Airbnbs.

Things to do

Take an airboat ride

Pick a company, any company. But don’t miss out on an airboat ride when you’re visiting the Everglades. It’s one of the best ways to see local flora and fauna, and your captain will be able to take you places you’d never find on your own. There are plenty of operators located along the perimeter of the park, regardless of whether you’re coming from the east or west coast. Buffalo Tiger Airboat Tours , pictured above, is a Miccosukee-run company that offers sunset tours with 24 hours notice.

BTW: Bring bug spray , the good stuff (anything with picaridin or DEET). Otherwise, prepare to slap and scratch until you reach a zen-like state of acceptance and become one with the mosquitoes.

Browse Clyde Butcher’s Big Cypress Gallery, then go on a nature tour

Clyde Butcher may as well be the official landscape photographer of the Everglades. For decades, the honorary gladesman has been capturing the essence of Florida’s wilderness, inspiring both ecotourism and preservation efforts. Much of that work is on display at his Big Cypress Gallery, located in the middle of the Everglades on scenic U.S. Highway 41. The gallery also offers swamp tours where adventurous visitors can trudge through the wetlands or take a photo safari to get their own evocative shots.

BTW: The gallery has plenty of souvenirs available for purchase in what you might otherwise call a gift shop desert.

Visit the Skunk Ape Research Headquarters

The Skunk Ape is basically South Florida’s version of Bigfoot. Dave Shealy, the proprietor of the headquarters, is considered the preeminent expert of the upright cryptid, which is said to scale trees and crave lima beans. Shealy claims to have seen the Skunk Ape near his property three times, and his shaky video of one of those encounters has hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube . The research center sadly doesn’t have much information about the sasquatch, but you can pick up some Skunk Ape merch and take a selfie with a statue of the creature outside the shop.

BTW: The on-site Everglades Adventure Tours offers canoe and kayak rentals, as well as birding safaris and other excursions. Or, for a few bucks, you can check out the HQ’s reptile exhibit, which boasts a 24-foot python named Goldie.

Send a postcard from the smallest post office in the U.S.

The smallest post office in the country can be found in the tiny, unincorporated community of Ochopee (pronounced oh-CHOP-ee, from the Seminole word for farm). The building, which fits exactly one postal worker, measures less than 62 square feet and was originally used as a shed for a nearby tomato farm. The post office makes for a nice photo op and is a great excuse to mail a postcard from your trip.

BTW: You can purchase a postcard there if you forget to bring one from another part of your travels.

Explore the Seminole Tribe’s Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum

After U.S. troops invaded Spanish Florida in the 1800s, starting the Seminole Wars , a few hundred tribal members were able to disappear into the Everglades for safety. The Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum on the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation pays homage to the tribe’s special relationship to that environment. Inside, you’ll find exhibits highlighting Seminole traditions on the reservation, as well as rotating exhibits showing a more contemporary way of life. Outside, you’ll find a winding boardwalk through a sprawling cypress swamp where up to 70 species of plants and wildlife can be seen.

BTW: The museum is in a fairly remote area north of Everglades National Park, so download a nice long podcast or audiobook for the drive. You might also plan on taking an airboat ride up in that area to make a day of it.

Ride the Shark Valley bike trail

Stretch your legs and get a lay of the land on two wheels at Shark Valley. The National Park Service rents bikes to visitors for a very reasonable $23 per day, and the 15-mile bike loop takes about two to three hours to complete. Don’t miss the observation tower, which offers sweeping views of the landscape. The visitors center also offers a two-hour narrated tram ride, which costs $29 for adults, $23 for seniors (62 and older) and $15 for children 3 to 12.

BTW: Rent your bike online in advance; rental inventory goes quickly during peak winter months. And if you’re visiting during a warm season, you might want to stick with the tram, because there isn’t a whole lot of shade coverage to escape from the sun.

Grab a smoothie at Robert Is Here

Nothing says “refreshing” after a long day in the sun like a smoothie from Robert Is Here. The beloved local fruit stand has been run by founder Robert Moehling since he was 6, when he was made to sell extra cucumbers from his family’s farm on the side of the road. His “Robert Is Here” sign went up the next day, and locals have been coming ever since. While you can find a variety of tropical fruits and produce, the highlight is the $10 smoothies made of fresh fruit blended with ice — no funny ingredients or additives in sight. There are picnic tables for seating, and kids will enjoy the animal farm, which has goats, cows and pigs.

BTW: Robert Is Here is further south in the Homestead area, so it’s a good place to swing by if you’re accessing the park through the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center entrance.

Where to eat

Breakfast: Sunburst Cafe

This colorful Naples cafe in a nondescript shopping plaza is well-known for its homemade muffins, but Sunburst also serves a full breakfast and some of the best coffee in town. The restaurant can get busy in the mornings, but the staff keeps things moving and gets food out quickly. You’ll find indulgences like omelets, pancakes, and biscuits and gravy alongside lighter items like oatmeal, avocado toast and a vegan breakfast bowl. Sunburst is also a great option for lunch.

BTW: Disco diva Donna Summer became a regular at Sunburst after relocating to Naples, where she lived out her final years until her death in 2012.

2340 Pine Ridge Rd., Naples, Fla., 34109 | 239-263-3123 | Website

Breakfast: Island Cafe

A local favorite in Everglades City, Island Cafe is a casual restaurant with a diner-style menu serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast starts at 6 a.m., making it an ideal spot if you plan to hit the road early (or if you just want to see how the city’s fishermen and airboat captains start their day). You’ll find all the typical fare — eggs, pancakes, biscuits and gravy — at a reasonable price: Almost everything on the breakfast menu is less than $10.

BTW: Island Cafe also offers boxed lunches, so you can grab a sandwich for the road after breakfast.

305 Collier Ave., Everglades City, Fla., 34139 | 239-695-0003 | Website

Lunch: La Sandwicherie

In 1988, La Sandwicherie opened its first sandwich counter in Miami Beach , just a few hundred feet from the ocean, and in recent years has been adding locations around South Florida. The branch in Coral Gables sits along the scenic, pedestrian-only Giralda Plaza, where there are plenty of shops to check out after lunch. Sandwiches and salads are made to order, as are smoothies and juices. A personal favorite is the Sobe Club, which comes with turkey, avocado and brie.

BTW: If there’s room in your suitcase, it’s worth purchasing a bottle of La Sandwicherie’s famous vinaigrette, which is great on sandwiches and salads.

142 Giralda Ave., Coral Gables, Fla., 33134 | 786-615-2724 | Website

Lunch: The Rod & Gun Club

The Rod & Gun Club is an Everglades City institution, opening in the 1920s with a chef from Bavaria and over the years hosting a guest list that’s said to include Ernest Hemingway, Mick Jagger and five U.S. presidents. Walking in the door is like stepping back in time — the decor and furnishings have been preserved from a former era. Grab a seat on the covered, screened-in porch so you can enjoy lunch and a beer with a waterfront view of the Barron River. You’ll find fried seafood and gator bites, a few simple salads and some basic sandwich options.

BTW: The restaurant only takes cash, so make sure you’ve got some.

200 W. Broadway, Everglades City, Fla., 34139 | 239-695-2101 | Website

Lunch: Joanie’s Blue Crab Cafe

Conveniently located in the middle of U.S. Highway 41, Joanie’s is a great spot to snag a bite between distant attractions. Fried seafood, including grouper, shrimp and gator, is the highlight of the menu. Grab a drink from the beverage cooler inside and settle into a spot outside on the screened-in porch, where you might just catch a glimpse of an alligator along the canal out back.

BTW: Joanie’s is a stone’s-throw away from the Ochopee post office and the Skunk Ape Research Headquarters in case you plan to check out either.

39395 Tamiami Trail E., Ochopee, Fla., 34141 | 239-695-2682

Dinner: The Dock at Crayton Cove

Did you really visit Naples if you didn’t have a meal at the Dock? The beloved waterfront restaurant has been serving fresh seafood and other specialties since 1976. Casual yet elegant, this is the kind of place where you could show up in a sundress or in shorts and flip-flops, and you’d fit in either way. Favorite dishes include the key lime grouper and the lobster potato gratin. Wash it down with a rum-forward Island Negroni or a “Docksicle,” a glass of bubbly with your choice of popsicle placed into the glass upside-down.

BTW: The Dock doesn’t take reservations, so prepare to wait if you’re arriving during peak season (late December to early May).

845 12th Ave. S., Naples, Fla., 34102 | 239-263-9940 | Website

Dinner: Caffe Abbracci

When you’ve washed off your bug spray and thrown a clean shirt over your sunburn at the end of the day, head to Caffe Abbracci for an upscale, old-school Italian dinner. In business since 1989, the restaurant is a mainstay in Coral Gables known for its customer service and classic menu. From pan-seared branzino to a traditional Bolognese, there’s no bad choice. For dessert, don’t miss the profiteroles, an expertly made, gelato-filled puff pastry dish crowned with Grand Marnier chocolate sauce.

BTW: Arrive early, or stay for a nightcap, so you can grab a drink at the bar and admire the stunning stained-glass ceiling.

318 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables, Fla., 33134 | 305-441-0700 | Website

Dinner: Captain Morgan’s Seafood Grill

A newcomer in the area, Captain Morgan’s brings a contemporary Cuban style to Everglades City’s dining scene. The family-owned restaurant serves up a variety of dishes, including shrimp tostones, roast pork and the chef’s signature seafood enchilado, a dish with stone crab, lobster, fish and clams covered in a slightly spicy sauce and served with white rice and sweet plantains. There are a handful of beers on tap, including local brews, and wines by the glass. The atmosphere is clean, modern and family friendly.

BTW: If you’re just passing through town without time for a full meal, Captain Morgan’s also has an adjacent ice cream parlor and serves Cuban coffee to fuel you up for the ride home.
