What Our Guests Say

ba be lake tour

We have just finished a 3 day trip to Ba Be Lake and Ban Gioc Waterfall with Conical Travel. The trip was such a big lesson for us to open our eyes and everything was so incredible. We were entirely mesmerized by the green landscape of rural parts in Northern Vietnam. We met a lot of local ethnic people who are different from people I saw in big cities inVietnam and we had chance to communicate with them and learn their cultures. So NICE!! Time spent in the Ban Gioc waterfall and Ba Be lake was unforgettable for us. We had the feeling of nature, adventure and happiness. The only thing we didnt like about the trip is the way is so long. Good recommendation for anybody who would like to do the trip, you should choose 4 days and you will have more time to see and discover. In all thank you Conical Travel for the great trip!!!

Moreover, you will have a chance to kayak amidst the mystery sunset of the late afternoon before getting back to your homestay

Day 2 BA BE - BAN GIOC WATERFALL (B, L, D, 200km)

Here you will have the chance to meet the Nung people in the village of Phuc Sen, a mountainous village famous for traditional blacksmith craft. Like the Tays, the Nungs largely live by farming the terraced rice paddies that you will see all around as you continue to Ban Gioc Waterfall , the stunning falls that span across the border between Vietnam and China. You will spend some time at your own leisure, relaxing and taking photos as you soak up the incredible surroundings of Vietnam’s most beautiful waterfall.

Heading back to Cao Bang town, on the way, we stop to visit the expansive 2,144 meter Nguom Ngao Cave to discover its brilliant stalactites.

Have dinner and overnight at a homestay of Nung’s village in Quang Uyen.

Day 3 CAO BANG - LANG SON - HANOI (B, L, 280km)

After breakfast we’ll kick the final day of the tour by continue your trip into the pass to Dong Dang, stopping to visit Mother’s Temple and Dong Khe – an important historical site where The Battle of Dong Khe was fought during the First Indochina War. In fact, this was the very first battle of the Indochina Wars, and the fighting here took place through September and October 1950, ending in a resounding victory for the Viet Minh.

Transferring to Lang Son for Lunch then driving in the direction of the Chinese border for about 3 hours, before reaching at Chi Lang Pass – a 20-km-long gorge created from a narrow valley between two mountains. This place occupies an important position in Vietnamese history, being the place of many victories against various Chinese invasions over the centuries and millennia, as far back as 981AD. As such it bears the reputation of Vietnam’s strongest citadel and bastion. Here you will have roughly an hour to walk around and explore the area around the Quy Mon Quan Gate, which translates as “The Gate of Monsters”, named for the many invasion forces that would spill through the pass over the course of history only to be beaten back by stalwart Vietnamese defenders.

End the tour in Hanoi around 18.00.

This is post 25 of 26 in the series “Vietnam”

Vietnam has become a favourite country of mine not only because it’s cheaper than Thailand, but also because of its unique mix of Chinese, Viet, and Champa influence. Vietnamese cuisine is one of my top favourite things as is their tea culture, not to mention that Phong Nha in Central Vietnam will always be my top national park destination.

Ba Be Lake in Northern Vietnam is a lesser-known national park with a tranquil lake fed by 3 rivers and surrounded by karst mountains. It’s a more off-the-beaten-path Vietnam National Park to visit with the opportunity to stay with the local people and trek around the farmlands, too.

See my guide to Hanoi here and what to eat here !

Ba Be Lake Essential Information

Ba Be Lake is not as famous as Sapa or Ha Giong, but it’s nonetheless a great destination in Northern Vietnam to visit.

The area is home to ethnic minorities. The Tay people mostly settled around the lake, while the Dao and Hmong people made their homes in the mountains.

Let’s dive into some frequently asked questions about Ba Be Lake:

Where is Ba Be Lake?

Ba Be Lake is located inside the Ba Be National Park about 6 hours north of Hanoi in the Bắc Kạn Province.

How long should I spend in Ba Be Lake?

Since Ba Be Lake is a little far from Hanoi, you want to at least do a 2 day 1 night trip. The general recommendation is to stay 3 days 2 nights, so you can have one full day there.

When is the best time to visit Ba Be Lake?

There are pros and cons to visiting Ba Be Lake in the dry and wet season.

view of village on river ba be lake ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

During the dry season (November to April), trekking is much more pleasant and there’s less chance of heavy rain washing rubbish into the lake. Although the water level might be lower.

However, in the wet season (May to October) the higher level of the lake and river means you can take a boat trip starting at one of the rivers by the village (which I think it’s the prettiest part).

How to get to Ba Be Lake?

There are no trains up north, but the road is relatively well paved. The bus or van journey up to Ba Be Lake takes 5-6 hours depending on traffic and weather conditions.

hanoi opera house pick up ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

It’s best to book a tour or arrange with your hotel or homestay for transport as you’d want to be directly dropped off. Ba Be Lake is relatively big and you don’t want to be stuck on the wrong side.

What is there to do in Ba Be Lake?

drone shot of ba be lake vietnam laugh travel eat

Ba Be Lake is the only natural lake in Vietnam surrounded by karst mountains. The area has long been home to ethnic minorities who mostly farms rice and corn. This led to a diverse landscape suitable for cycling, swimming, hiking, and kayaking. And you can visit and or stay with the Tay or Hmong people.

How big is Ba Be Lake?

Ba Be Lake covers 500 hectares of ground and is in an extended triangle shape. On each end is a river flowing into the lake and several small rock pools, too.

Ba Be Lake View Homestay

The Ba Be Lake View Homestay is at the highest point of the village along the river Leng on the southwestern edge of Ba Be Lake.

ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

The homestay is run by Tay villagers and they have air-conditioned rooms and a more rustic basic room with shared bathrooms.

air con room ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

It’s right by the mountainside and their terrace faces the lake with the most beautiful view. Lunch and dinner are eaten with the family. There’s usually a soup dish, vegetables, meat, and also eggs when they realise that I love eggs.

Ba Be National Park Attractions

view at ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

Ba Be Lake itself is definitely the biggest attraction in Ba Be National Park. But there is more than just cruising around to do on the lake, although that is pleasant enough already! Here are the top attractions on Ba Be Lake:

fairy lake ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat-3

Fairy Lake is the most famous rock basin pools by Ba Be Lake. It’s technically not connected to the lake, located north of the tip of Ba Be Lake by the river. There are many local vendors from the Hmong village across the mountain selling herbal teas, peanuts, and various food items. There are also plenty of snails (still alive)!

fairy lake ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat-2

The rock pool was not at its best on my visit, having been flooded after heavy rain and filled with rubbish. My guide told me that they used to have bamboo rafting there but those were destroyed under the heavy rain.

An Ma Shrine

The An Ma Shrine is located on an island roughly in the center of Ba Be Lake. Although the site of worship is not new, the temple we see was only built in 2006. Before that, it was just a small shrine at the back of the temple.

An Ma Temple ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat-3

It’s a popular place of worship for local people and they hold a festival here on the 6th of the second month in lunar new year. But in general, it’s well visited on the first day of every lunar month.

Hua Ma Cave

The Hua Ma Cave is located next to the river Leng and is also known as the Suspension Cave. While the cave entrance has been noted by the locals for a long time, the dark interior did not invite any explorer until the early 21st century. The cave was explored in the early 2000s and opened to visitors in 2007.

Although it can’t compare to the series of caves in Phong-Nha Ke Bang National Park , the Hua Ma Cave itself is a surprisingly deep and wide cave, extending over 700m. It’s a 300m climb to get to the cave entrance and a descend into the cool, damp air of the cavern.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), the new lighting installed in the cave in 2020 is now multi-coloured, which has the tendency to make it looks like a Stranger Things location or Halloween haunting ground.

Thac Tat Ma Waterfalls

Thac Tat Ma Waterfall view from afar ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

The drive leading up to the Thac Tat Ma Waterfalls reveals a gorgeous value and a thundering stream of water cascading down to the flatland. It is a popular waterfall for locals in the summer, and it’s a surprisingly easy hike from a dirt-parking lot.

Thac Tat Ma Waterfall view from afar ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

That said, during the wet season, it’s at its full strength and one must be careful when taking a dip. The local Tay people would build a bamboo bridge to cross the upper part of the waterfall, but that can be washed away during heavy rain or flow.

Trekking in Ba Be National Park

The Ba Be National Park is full of gorgeous farmland across mountains and valleys. You can also visit the various ethnic villages that have been cut off from the rest of the world until recently.

bamboo bridge drone shot trekking cycling tripba be national park vietnam

You would absolutely need a local guide while hiking in the area, as the trails are not well mapped and you can easily get lost on an offshoot. There is still a good deal of wildlife in the area who are generally quite shy. They could create paths that look like a trail but aren’t!

trekking cycling trip ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

Plus, the trails are not marked on google map and only local guides know where the best spots are!

Ba Be Lake Tours

As mentioned before, since Ba Be Lake is still not well developed for international tourism, it’s best to book a tour when you visit.

fairy lake ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

The most common ones are 2D1N or 3D2N, depending on the time you have. Given that it takes 5-6 hours to drive one way, you would only have two half-days in Ba Be National Park.

Here are the sample itineraries of what the Ba Be Lake tours would be like:

Day 1: Hanoi – Ba Be Lake – Boat Trip – Swimming

Day 2: Cycling – Visiting Cave – Hanoi

Ba Be Lake View Homestay Price: $90. All included

My experience on a Ba Be Lake 3 day 2 night tour

Booking the ba be lake tour with ba be lake view homestay.

Ba Be Lake View Homestay has an active Facebook account as well as a proper website with email. I contacted them via email and they responded quickly in English.

ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

The price includes everything and Viet, the booking agent, let me know the time and place for pick up. I was traveling solo and left my big luggage at my Hanoi hotel and set off bright and early on day 1.

Day 1 of Ba Be Lake 3 day 2 night tour

Transport to ba be lake.

My pick-up time for the local bus was 6:20 am in front of the Hanoi Opera House. Although the Old Quarter of Hanoi was quiet, it was easy to get a Grab car to the Opera House.

I arrived early and there were already plenty of people waiting for their transfer. I was given the license plate number and spotted my van before 6:20 and hopped on.

It was a local van that stopped along the way to pick up people and parcels. Not everyone was headed to Ba Be, as the van drove through Thái Nguyên and Bắc Kạn.

The driver was very energetic and engaged the other passengers in conversation while I mostly just tried to sleep. There was one rest stop about halfway where you can get food, and drinks, and go to the bathroom.

Lunch at Ba Be Lake View Homestay

I arrived at the homestay just before noon and checked into my room as I waited for the family to prepare our lunch.

day 1 lunch ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

The view was amazing and I couldn’t stop admiring it! The family didn’t speak much English but it was a lovely lunch with local dishes with river shrimps, vegetables, meat, and rice.

Ba Be Lake Boat Trip

sunset drone shot of ba be lake vietnam

My guide came back to pick me up at 2 pm, giving me some time to rest from the early bus ride. We walked down to the riverside of the village as the river water level was high enough to take the boat to the lake.

boat trip ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

We visited all the big attractions on the lake: An Ma Temple and Fairy Lake. It was a gorgeous trip and my favourite is the scenic ride back to the village.

island in ba be lake ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

It’s safe to swim in the lake and it was refreshingly cold! We got back to the homestay just before 6 pm and just in time to watch the sunset.

Dinner at Ba Be Lake View Homestay

I had time to shower and change before dinner, and we ate downstairs at 8 pm as there was a big local group arriving.

day 1 dinner ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

We had 4 dishes and one of them was bamboo shoot which I really enjoy!

Day 2 of Ba Be Lake 3 day 2 night tour

Normally, today would be a day of hiking but we had to change our plans due to heavy rainfall. Here’s a quick overview of the hiking:

From the homestay, guests usually hike 5-6 km to another village, then across the mountain to see rice paddies, and then at the top to see some viewpoints.

Lunch would be at a Hmong village before crossing another mountain, passing some corn fields and rice fields to another Hmong village with a school visit.

If guests are tired, they can rent a boat to go back in the summer but it’s not possible in the winter.

Breakfast at Ba Be Lake View Homestay

I woke up before 7 am and it was a beautiful misty morning. I had pho ga (chicken rice noodle soup) for breakfast and my guide came to get me at 8:15 to let me know the ground was too wet from heavy rain earlier in the week to hike.

pho breakfast ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

We agreed on cycling instead and he set off to fetch the bicycle and set off at 9 am. We cycled on the main road past rice paddies surrounded by the karst mountains.

Cycling around Ba Be National Park

cycling ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

We stopped at a village to look at the local market, and my guide Tuoi knew everyone!

ba be lake tour

We only stopped for a while and left our bicycle at a local shop and headed out on a hike.

Easy hiking in Ba Be National Park

bamboo bridge drone shot trekking cycling tripba be national park vietnam

The hike was all along the paved road, first along the main one, then veering into a village. I really enjoyed seeing the countryside and the bamboo bridge and platform! We did also stop by a waterfall and it felt good to dip my feet in the water.

We then hiked back to the village and got on our bicycles to go to Hua Ma Cave, where we passed by on the cycle over.

Lunch by Hua Ma Cave

We had lunch at the local restaurant by Hua Ma Cave, a hearty plate of fried rice and there was a water filler.

The hike up to Hua Ma Cave was about 300m. My guide got us tickets, and we walked up the mossy ramp and then the stairs.

Entering the cave was like going into an air-conditioned space that is much cooler and comparatively less damp. I was not a fan of the multi-coloured lighting but the cave itself is beautiful.

going up Hua Ma cave ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

It was empty and the only group we saw headed out when we went in!

Hua Ma cave ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat-3

After the cave visit, we went back to our bicycle and headed home, getting back before 4 pm. I initially was going to go kayaking, but the kayak was filled with water from the heavy rain before! So I settled for another late afternoon by the view.

day 2 dinner ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

Dinner was earlier today at 7:20 pm and I really enjoyed the mushroom soup they made an omelet for me!

Day 3 of Ba Be Lake 3 Day 2 Night trip

Normally, cycling would be on day 2, and day 3 is cycling and the Hua Ma Cave visit. But given that I did that yesterday, we discussed it and agreed on going to the waterfall.

breakfast day 2 ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

The family generally gets up well before me, so they bring me a bowl of noodles and bananas. This time, it was a slightly spicy instant noodle that was quite nice.

Thac Tat Ma Waterfall

Thac Tat Ma Waterfall ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

My guide came to get me just before 8:30 and we set off on his motorbike to the waterfall. It was a lovely and easy walk up from the parking lot, and we stayed by the waterfall to enjoy the place.

final lunch ba be lake view homestay ba be lake ba be national park Vietnam - laugh travel eat

We got back at 10:45, giving me time to chat with my guide and pack before lunch. It was only me and Lien, the lady who runs the homestay, and she had a plate of mango for me!

Departure for Hanoi

My van came at exactly noon and it was the same guy who drove me up! He was still relentlessly energetic and it was a full ride back to Hanoi.

Hi, my name is Nam. I am 24 and spent half my life in Hong Kong and the other half in UK. I believe there's endless experience and beauty in the world and this is me chronicling how to experience the best at the best price.

In case you love advantageous sailing, a choice of a dugout would be very excited. Besides, you can do biking along the lake side or trekking into the primeval forest of the lake. The following attractions are also waiting for you to discover:

Cave Puông : With 300 m in length and more than 30m in height, this gigantic cave is decorated with thousands of stalactites in multi colors and shapes. Moreover, there are tens of thousands of bats living inside this cave.

Đầu Đẳng waterfall : River Năng, blocked by hundred of huge stones, has to separate its flow into many smaller flows but with faster velocity and hence, creates the grandiose Dau Dang waterfall. At such length of more than 1,000 meters plus with the three huge stair stone, the landscape of waterfall is look like desolated and impressive.

Hua Mạ cave : Away from Ba Be lake about 6km, Hua Ma Cave offers you an interesting trekking to the cave’s mouth after climbing up about 300m on the sloppy mountain road. You will be amazed at the various type of stalactites inside this cave.

Besides, if you have more time, you should visit other interesting places like: Phya Khao, Kim Hỷ, Fairy Cave, Nà Đăng waterfall, Pác Ngòi village, Thác Giềng spring, etc, enjoy the music of “dan tinh” of Tay ethnic group.

Going there

Nowadays, the home stay service is developing in many villages surrounding Ba Be lake, and the most attractive village here is Pac Ngoi village where there are more than 10 households supply the home stay for tourists with necessary facilities.  Sleeping in home stay is a very good experience if you like the nature and want to make the most of the pleasant atmosphere there.

boat on ba be lake

Otherwise, you can choose to stay at the Bac Kan town or guest-house in Cho Ra then take a car to the lake area in the morning, return your hotel in the afternoon.

Specialties made from Ba Be Lake are very fresh and delicious: fish caught from the spring, shrimp fed in Ba Be lake, chicken breed on the hill, vegetable planted in the forests, suckling pig, sticky rice planted on the terrace field, bamboo sprout, etc which will bring you good appetite.

It might be quite cold in the early morning and at night, so remember to take a warm clothes & long clothes to avoid the night dew, and anti-insect cream. Also, it would be better if you bring the sneaks and mineral water because there is not much food restaurant or grocery stores in the village.

Comfortable lightweight clothing in natural fabrics such as cotton is most suitable for traveling in Vietnam. The dress code is fairly casual as in most parts of the tropics but it is advisable to cover arms and legs in the evenings against biting insects. A lightweight raincoat is a good idea in the rainy season. During the winter months warm clothing is needed for visiting the north of Vietnam. Visitors should not wear shorts, short skirts or other skimpy clothing when visiting religious buildings such as pagoda, temple and shoes should be removed before entering a private home.

What you take will naturally depend upon where you are traveling and the style of journey you are undertaking, and it can often be difficult to decide what to pack. Nevertheless, the following should act as a useful checklist of essential items worth thinking about taking.

  • 2 pairs of quick dry socks for cycling
  • Comfortable shoes for biking and walking
  • Riding gloves
  • 2-3 t-shirts or casual shirts
  • Trousers or jeans
  • 1-2 pairs of casual socks for non-cycling activities
  • 3-5 sets of underwear (quick-dry)
  • Cool-weather jacket or rain jacket
  • Extra layers and gloves for cooler season or climate (thin, thermal, water-wicking)
  • Bathing suit
  • Tooth brush and tooth paste
  • Hand sanitizer

  • Passport, wallet and ID
  • Health insurance card
  • Travel insurance card
  • Cash and/or credit cards
  • Camera (with spare battery)
  • Plastic bags (for dirty laundry, wet clothes)

Tipping for good services is always appreciated. It is customary, though not compulsory, to tip tour guides and drivers at the end of the tour. Hotels and station porters should also be tipped a small amount for.

Prior to our tours, we contact and work with local community leaders to make sure we are welcome and in a manner that minimizes negative social and cultural impacts. We visit local development and community projects specific to the region, encouraging customers to donate and assist such a projects in appropriate and sustainable manner.

Where make sure that where and whenever possible our tours positively benefit the local community. • Your Complete Travel Guide To Ba Be Lake

31 May 2024

Ba Be Lake is in Ba Be National Park in Bac Kan Province, almost 250 km northwest of Hanoi. Ba Be Lake is a freshwater lake with a depth of 35m. It has a range of primary forests with rich flora and fauna. In 2011, Ba Be Lake was honoured as one of the 20 biggest freshwater lakes in the world. The unique geological and geomorphological features have created interesting tourism resources alongside ethnic culture and biodiversity in the area. Ba Be Lake is a great tourist destination for Vietnamese and international visitors interested in discovering the scenic beauty, ethnic culture, and biodiversity in the area.

Serenity And Beauty Of Ba Be Lake

Ba Be Lake belongs to Ba Be National Park, Bac Kan province, Vietnam. It is 180 km away from Hanoi to the north. If departing from Hanoi, tourists can go directly to Ba Be Lake because the road leading to the place is quite short and favourable. As one of the natural freshwater lakes located at the lowest elevation in Vietnam, it is also the largest freshwater lake in Northern Vietnam. The average depth from 23 to 29 meters here can be up to 35 meters. The biggest depth is around 35-40 metres. Ba Be Lake Basin is 8 metres higher than the surrounding countryside. The country’s lowest point is only at about 165-170 meters.

Ba Be Lake is a typical U-shaped, concave valley embossed by a huge landslide in an ancient geological era. The base of the triangle is open to form a lake, the lake bottom is divided into 2 smaller streams. The narrow Ba Go mountain pass was slightly cut by water to form a river. The rock is eroded by the river in a pile about 700m long and deep from the bottom to the surface of the water at both ends. In the middle of the lake, the river eroded but the rock retained the old shore. The cross-section of the embankment loosens and the rock is squarely pushed by the bay into the valley.

Activities And Attractions

Being famous for the breathtaking beauty of the landscape, interesting and friendly residents, and home to many precious historical relics, this is the favoured choice for the Ba Be Lake tour. Coming to Ba Be, tourists can participate in many fun activities such as swimming, going sightseeing, and visiting the caves.

1. Explore The Scenic Dau Dang Fall

Discover the majestic beauty of the falls near the Ba Be Lake.

The first recommended destination is Dau Dang Fall, located 15 kilometres upstream of the Nang River. This 300-meter-high fall is divided into three floors of different shapes and sizes. Due to the powerful impact, the water falling on the ground creates a big stream forming a water wall that flows into the cave.

Tip: Bring good boots for hiking on the ground around the fall and expect some slippery paths close to the water.

2. Discover The Marvellous Puong Cave

Experience the aesthetics of the Puong cave near the Be Be Lake.

The next place is Puong Cave, located on the way to Cho Ra. All the boat tours across the area stop at this cave, which tourists can freely visit and take photos of. Visiting this cave adds an interesting aspect to the tour of Ba Be Lake.

Tip: Every boat takes time to stop at Puong Cave allowing the tourists to explore the cave and take photos.

3. Unwind At Tranquil Tien Pond

Views of the Tien Pond close to the Ba Be Lake.

The last attraction is Tien Pond. Situated 3 kilometres downstream of Ba Be Lake, Tien Pond has a vast water surface. You should spend an overnight at Ba Be Lake to behold the magical colours of this area. The fog in the air blends and stirs in the dim twilight. The surface seems to become a giant mirror reflecting the sunshine’s shimmering colours.

Tip: Carry a camera with you to capture the beautiful reflections on the water surface at sunrise and sunset.

3. Cultural Experiences

Ba Be Lake promotes the development of the tourism potential.

Growing rice at the beginning of the year, lying inside rather than down, and growing climbing rice at the end of the year. Butterflies and birds are also present in flowery rice fields. The fruit of the rice ripens to give a fragrant smell to visitors. Ba Be can say that she receives her favour, eyes, and silk scales worthy of the “Precious Pearl on the Green Carpet” in Northeast Uttar Pradesh of Vietnam.

Tip: Ba Be National Park is part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. It is worth visiting the stilt houses of ethnic Tay, Nung, and Dao inhabitants whose way of life has changed little in hundreds of years.

  • Things to do in Ba Be Lake
  • Things to Do

Ba Be National Park sits peacefully in the northeast province of Bac Kan, a haven of extraordinary scenery, fascinating biodiversity and rich culture. The ethnic minority communities live in small hamlets throughout the and still maintain a simple way of life, living off the land and fishing from the lakes and rivers.

As you adventure through the national park you will have the chance to meet the local people and discover their history and culture. The many different areas of the national park are steeped in mystery and legends, the stories handed down through many generations.

Ba Be Lake Overview

The name Ba Ba translates as Three Lakes, referring to the three parts of the lake: Pe Leng, Pe Lu, and Pe Lam. The lake is the largest freshwater lake in Vietnam spanning over 500ha. It is also the highest, sitting at 150 meters above sea level. The vast lake is surrounded by impressive karst peaks that make up the Pia Booc mountain range and thick, evergreen forests.

Babe3 Things to do in Ba Be Lake

This is the perfect place for any keen adventurer. Here you can trek through the thick jungle, explore mystical caves, kayak down the rivers, and swim in the lakes. The incredible range of terrain will keep you on your toes and keep your excitement piqued. The national park itself was only established in 1992, making it feel as if you are exploring unchartered areas. Many caves have only been discovered recently and are providing new information about the geography and biodiversity of the area.

As well as the incredible scenery, this national park is home to a staggering 1268 species of flora and fauna, some of which are rare species. This really is a paradise for any nature lovers. Researchers  have discovered 65 species of mammals, including Chinese pangolins, flying squirrels, macaques, langurs and bears. As well as the incredible mammals living in the area, researchers have discovered 106 species of fish, 223 varieties of birds and well over 300 types of butterfly.  You could easily while away your time simply looking for these incredible creatures.

Babe10 Things to do in Ba Be Lake

Admire a Fairy Pond and Window island

Another peaceful spot on the lake is known as Fairy Pond , which is situated in the third section of the lake. The name is well suited to the area as it certainly has a magical feel about it. Legend has it that some fairies, who had been bathing in the secluded waters, lured a local huntsman and put a spell on him. The local fishermen, however, are not put off by this mystical tale and often enjoy fishing peacefully in the waters. One more spot shrouded in local legend is Widow’s Island which sits in the middle of the lake, inviting you to explore its tangle of rocks, roots and branches.  The large chunk of rock topped with a thick green forest has an air of mystery surrounding it as it sits alone in the middle of the lake. The name of the island originates from the story of a kind widow and her son who once lived on the island. It is believed that they saved many people from the natural disaster that created Ba Be using only two husks of rice from a fairy.

Babe7 Things to do in Ba Be Lake

Visiting Caves

Ba Be also has a fascinating collection of caves just waiting to be explored. One of the most impressive caves in Ba Be is Puong Cave with a height of 30m and length of 300m. This large, dark cavern sits at the bottom of Lung Nham Mountain and was created by years of erosion by the Nang River. This tunnel cave looms over the river and visitors can explore the cave by boat. The dark mouth of the cave leads to a magical maze of stalactites and stalagmites which cast shadows across the tall limestone walls. This amazing hidden world is also the home of thousands of bats. The colonies living amongst nature’s sculpture are made up of an impressive 18 species.

Cultural and Arts

Tay, Dzao and H’mong ethnic minority communities constitute the majority of the scattered villages in and around Ba Be National Park . These small hamlets range from just a cluster of just a few stilt houses to larger communities. The Tay people, famed for their wooden stilt houses, inhabit the villages of Coc Toc , Pac Ngoi and Ban Cam . The simple, wooden structures sit peacefully on the banks of the river, blending harmoniously with the mountains and water. They rely on farming and fishing for sustenance and can be seen fishing or travelling in their dugout canoes named doc moc. Local people skillfully craft each canoe from one tree trunk, and although extremely narrow, they glide effortlessly through the water. As well as being talented woodworkers, the Tay people are known for having some of the most sophisticated looms. You can see the women weaving the exquisite fabrics in the fresh air underneath the stilt houses. You may also get to experience the traditional singing and folk dances which bring these villages to life.

Ba Be is also home to H’mong communities who live an agricultural lifestyle, farming pumpkins, maize, soya and rice. These communities tend to be more isolated and have a strong sense of community which is visible in their distinctive traditional attire. The women work outside weaving the intricate brocade that makes up the colourful outfits, working tirelessly with their children playing around them. Another village in which to meet some friendly and welcoming local people is Na Nghe Village . This small Dzao village is well worth the hike, after trekking through the wilderness with only the sounds of nature you will be rewarded with stunning views of the valley below. The village itself is made up of traditional Dzao, wooden buildings where families eat, sleep and live together. Here you can see the women preparing the mouthwatering evening meals made up of a medley of tasty dishes. A traditional Dzao method of relaxation, are the fragrant and cleansing herbal baths. Large cauldrons are filled with steaming water and a ion of herbs, chosen for their different healing qualities. The steam is trapped using a large blanket as you bask in the aromatic steam, letting the healing herbs work their magic.

Food and Drink

Because of Ba Be’s favourable farming and fishing conditions, the food found here is varied and fresh. From locally grown vegetables to free range meat and fish from the lakes and rivers, the feasts you will enjoy with your hosts are sure to leave you wanting more. One such dish is Lon Cap Nach which translates to pig carried under the arm, so called because of the size of the pigs. These pigs are around just 10kg in weight and are raised wild in the surrounding fields and forests and have a sweet and tender meat. Here you will smell the fragrant spices as the meat is grilled or roasted ready for the evening meal.

All meals are served with a ion of freshly prepared, nutritious vegetables. One such side dish is chayote served with sesame. The mild sweetness of the green vegetable beautifully compliments the earthy nutty flavour of the sesame. Another accompanying dish, eaten en masse across Asia is, of course, rice. Here you can find the northern speciality of com lam. For this dish, young bamboo is stuffed with a mixture of rice, water and sometimes coconut water. The package is then wrapped in banana leaves and cooked on a fire. The end result is fragrant, sweet and sticky rice which is the perfect accompaniment to the succulent meats and fresh vegetables. After a delicious and satisfying feast, when the sun has faded over the mountain, it is time to relax and enjoy a cup or two of Noc Suong the local rice wine . This powerful homebrew is a popular way to unwind and bond after a hard days work. Served from plastic water bottles while you sit atop tiny chairs, this clear spirit will keep you warm on the coldest of nights and make for a unforgettable night!

Festivals and events

One of the biggest festivals in Ba Be is the Long Tong Festival . This is a grand celebration in honour of the first rice crop of the new lunar year. On the 9th and 10th days of the first lunar month, people from all of the ethnic minority villages descend on the river bank, all dressed in their finest traditional outfits. The bright colours of the embroidered attire, the waving flags and the traditional decorations awaken the area with festival spirit. The fields are packed with stalls selling local delicacies which fill the air with mouthwatering scents. The festival features traditional rituals such as ceremonial offerings of local produce to the gods in order to pray for a prosperous year. This is one of the biggest social events of the year friends are reunited and enjoy catching up and joining in with the exciting activities. Here you can see a whole host of traditional games, music and dancing, everyone joining in with the jovial atmosphere. The stunning back of the mountains and lake make these celebrations extra special. As night crawls over the field, the celebrations are lit up with delicate, floating flower lanterns and a raging bonfire to ward off the cold.

Later in the year, sometime in March or April, after the first of the rains, the rare Ca Chien fish , known for growing up to 10 kilograms in weight, perform and exciting display as the fish splash through the waterfall in what looks like an intensely competitive race to the other side.

Transsib: Moscow to Lake Baikal

This Trans-Siberian route takes you on the mystic Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow through the Siberian steppe to Lake Baikal. The train is a convenient way to discover a number of the often-overlooked jewels of the Russian countryside.

Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, and Irkutsk may differ from many traditional destinations; however, culturally and architecturally they can keep up with other well-known cities.

Travel Warning for Russia

Due to the political atmosphere in Russia and the unprovoked attacks in Ukraine, we do not recommend traveling to Russia. Please inform yourself in advance about possible entry restrictions. Stay healthy and safe travels.

Moscow: Historical Capital Of Russia

Politically and culturally, Moscow is a world metropolis of the first order. The Kremlin , the colorful St. Basil’s Cathedral and Red Square are globally recognized landmarks.

GUM , also on Red Square, is Russia’s largest department store and one of the world’s finest and most exclusive shopping addresses. In terms of cultural offerings, the sublime Bolshoi Theatre comes first with regular ballet and opera performances.

Make sure to try some traditional foods local to Moscow: Shchi (cabbage soup), Pelmeni (dumplings), Pastila (fruit confectionary), or Blini (thin savory pancakes).

Moscow Kazansky Station → Kazan | Duration: 11:30-12:55 h | Transfers: 0

There are a couple of direct regular line trains leaving throughout the day giving you plenty of options for choosing berths.

Recommended Accommodations:

Godzillas Rooms Mercure Arbat Moscow

Kazan: Melting Pot Of Religions

Kazan unites the Russians and the Tatars as well as Christian and Muslim culture like no other city in Russia . Nowhere in the city can this be seen more clearly than in the heart of Kazan.

There, the Kazan Kremlin , itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is flanked by the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation and the Kul Sharif Mosque .

Something worth checking out is the Temple of All Religions , a miscellaneous mix of stylistic elements from 16 different religions, which houses a gallery, a museum, and a concert hall. Back in the center of town is Bauman Street and is well known to Kazan.

Kazan → Yekaterinburg | Duration: 12:50-14:35 h | Transfers: 0

There are four connections leaving throughout the day to the next destination of Yekaterinburg/ Ekaterinburg.

Backpack Hostel Kazan Tatarskaya Usadba

Yekaterinburg: Border Town Between Europe And Asia

Our next stop on this Trans-Siberian Route is Yekaterinburg, which 40 kilometers east of the geographical border between Europe and Asia. In July 1918 the tsar’s family was murdered here and today, the most famous building in the city, the “ Cathedral on the Blood “, commemorates this event.

A few steps away, the turquoise blue façade of the Ascension Cathedral catches the eye. Lenin Prospekt , Yekaterinburg’s main street is lined on both sides with most of the most famous sights.

Museums, theatres, the municipal opera house, and the historic city park can all be easily reached on foot from this street.

Yekaterinburg → Novosibirsk | Duration: 19:20-21:48 h | Transfers: 0

There are three convenient connections to your next destination of Novosibirsk, an important city in Siberia. Enjoy another day and evening on the train as you watch the stunning Russian landscapes pass you by.

Red Line Hostel Four Elements Ekaterinburg

Novosibirsk: Capital Of Siberian Culture

The Trans-Siberian Railway plays a central role in the history of Novosibirsk . Its construction is the reason why the city was founded and today the metropolis is the economic and cultural center of Siberia .

After the Bolshoi , the Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre is the most famous theatre in Russia.

The Museum of Railway History of Western Siberia pays tribute to the Trans-Siberian Railway . And the Sanduny baths allow you to relax by visiting a traditional Russian bathhouse with massages and saunas.

Novosibirsk → Irkutsk | Duration: 28:58-33:48 h | Transfers: 0

This is the longest stretch of train journey along this route but it’s well worth the anticipation building up top the famous Lake Baikal. There are a handful of connections every day to take from Novosibirsk.

Hello Hostel AZIMUT Hotel Siberia

Lake Baikal: The World’s Largest Freshwater Lake

Finally, the Trans-Siberian Railway will take you to Irkutsk . The town at Lake Baikal owes its nickname to the numerous beautiful wooden houses, which give the place a romantic and comfortable atmosphere.

Since Irkutsk is not located directly at Lake Baikal , it is advisable to continue to Listvyanka 65km away by car or bus. There you can stay overnight directly at the lake and make excursions whether it be dog sledding, fishing, or much more!

This route is finished but that doesn’t mean you need to be too! You can either take a direct train (3 days) back to Moscow, or continue in a direction you haven’t been yet to Mongolia , or China . Take a look at this route on the Trans-Mongolian while you’re at it.

Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.
