The Top 10 Safari Lodges in Africa in 2021

Lila Harron Battis is a freelance writer and editor. She was previously a senior editor at Travel + Leisure .

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite safari lodges in Africa.

This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

The Western idea of Africa as a vast unknowable expanse of wilderness — rather than a living, breathing place with as much diversity and unique regionality as any other continent — has endured with stubborn longevity. Perhaps quintessential images like silverbacks in a lush mountain forest, giraffes and acacia trees silhouetted against a savannah sunset, and herds of elephants in the floodplains along a winding river stick with travelers because they are so unlike the nature scenes of the U.S., where centuries of human interference have left little trace of true wilderness or of the animals that once roamed freely.

Africa's rarefied natural spaces have compelled generations of adventurers to seek them out — and the hospitality world has kept pace. Today's safari-goers have little more to worry about than checking off the Big Five and whether to order red or white with dinner. And for the ultimate in service, comfort, and indulgence, they can't go wrong with the places that T+L readers voted onto this year's list of the best safari lodges in Africa.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

The spots on the list are brimming with opulent touches and spectacular scenery. At No. 4 Angama Mara, in Kenya's Masai Mara , two 15-tent camps dot the edge of an escarpment about 300 yards above the game reserve. The views of the Great Rift Valley are so cinematic it's tempting to stay on property and just gawk at the scenery. Don't miss a visit to the on-site craft workshop, where Masai women teach guests the techniques and meaning behind their beading traditions, or the photography studio, where you can test out pro gear and polish up your safari snapshots with cutting-edge photo-editing software.

At No. 6 Singita Grumeti, in Tanzania , the lodging options offer something for every style: crystal chandeliers and gilded frames at Sasakwa Lodge, rattan chairs and campaign tables at Sabora Tented Camp, and breezy furnishings and basketry-inspired light fixtures at Faru Faru Lodge, among others. In South Africa, andBeyond Ngala Safari Lodge (No. 9) has 20 cottages that blend light details — wide-slate bathroom floors, ceramic stools, pale patterned loveseats, high thatched ceilings — with the gravitas of deep-hued wood furnishings, muted flat-weave rugs, and antique-inspired wildlife illustrations. Overall, it feels grounded and traditional, but never stuffy. The property is situated on Ngala Private Game Reserve, which — thanks to the success of andBeyond's conservation work — is now part of Kruger National Park.

Many of the properties on this list held an emotional resonance for our readers, one that lingered long after returning home. Of the Bushcamp Company's Mfuwe Lodge, in Zambia, which came in No. 8, one reader wrote, "I dream about Mfuwe, the people, and the sounds of the animals at night. The experience I had was beyond everything I imagined." Another put it simply: "You truly connect with raw life." A reader who spent time at No. 5 Gibb's Farm, in Tanzania, called it "the most magical place I've ever stayed!" And at Sasaab, in Kenya, the property's do-good efforts made a mark just as much as the luxe environment: "Sasaab's culture is fabulous," a reader wrote of the No. 10 property, adding that "the hotel has an innate sustainable ethos."

But the best safari lodge in Africa, the Richard Branson–owned Mahali Mzuri, brings together every element readers expect in their experience, then amplifies it all tenfold. Read on to find out why it's so beloved and which other lodges join it on this year's list.

1. Mahali Mzuri, Masai Mara, Kenya

The 12-suite Mahali Mzuri sits on the edge of a lush bowl, and there's not a bad seat in the house: over breakfast, you can watch monkeys scrabble in the trees and grass; from the pool you'll spot giraffes wandering through to snack on the acacias; sitting on your private terrace you may catch a glimpse of a cat stopping to drink from the rocky stream that runs through. And the property's location is ideal for maximizing both wildlife spotting and privacy. It's set within the private, 33,000-acre Olare Motorogi Conservancy, which is part of the Masai Mara ecosystem but beyond the bounds of the national park. That means all the richness of big game, but no other cars in sight—you can get within feet of a lion pride and have the moment all to yourself, with no jockeying for position or tuning out the chatter of other safari-goers. "Mahali Mzuri is the best luxurious camp to visit on the African continent," declared one reader; "just perfect," wrote another. The team is small and familial, with the kind of warm, relaxed — yet flawless — service that gives guests the easy sense of being among friends; the guides are among the best in the business, many having worked at the property for years to develop intimate knowledge of the land and its wildlife. One reader put it best: "The hospitality at Mahali Mzuri resembles its name," he wrote, noting the translation of the Swahili: "the Beautiful Place."

South African trail saddles are used as they are more comfortable over long distances and kinder on the horse’s back. Includes the “exclusive use” of a helicopter, and luxury bush camps, based on availability.

Mokoro Canoe Trips in the Okavango Delta

Enjoy a tranquil journey in a mokoro, the traditional way of traversing the wondrous water land of the Okavango Delta, a unique pulsing wetland.

It is part of the Rift Valley System and one of the few large inland delta systems without an outlet to the sea. Known as an endorheic delta, its waters drain instead into the desert sands of the Kalahari Basin.

This is the habitat of vast elephant and Cape buffalo herds, or perhaps and home to Pel’s fishing owl, one of the most elusive and sought-after birds of the Okavango Delta. For most twitchers, this bird is considered by some to be the Holy Grail of rare birds.

7 of the Best Safaris in Africa, According to a Travel Expert

By Melissa Biggs Bradley

Segera Retreat

After traveling to Africa dozens of times on safari, I have been asked, as founder of luxury travel group Indagare , to pick a favorite lodge more times than I can count. It is truly impossible for me to choose just one, which is why in Safari Style: Exceptional African Camps and Lodges , I cover many lodges in many regions, from the desert in Namibia, the Serengeti in Tanzania, the mountains in Rwanda, to the great concessions and parks in Botswana and South Africa.

7 of the Best Safaris in Africa According to a Travel Expert

Every property in the book—there are 21 of them, across 7 countries—can be guaranteed to deliver an unforgettable safari and aesthetic experience. I have included the continent’s most luxurious lodges as well as incredible tented camps that showcase cutting-edge sustainable infrastructure, but these are illustrative, not definitive, because there are many amazing properties that didn’t make it in the book. Safari Style is meant to inspire discovery and broaden—not limit—one’s view of Africa and its safari lodges.

Here are seven properties that showcase some of the most impressive locations and innovations of Africa’s next generation of safari camps, and highlight the diversity of experiences that you can have in the bush.

A beautiful view from Singita Mara River Camp.

A beautiful view from Singita Mara River Camp.

Singita Mara River Camp, Tanzania

For the Great Migration and epic wildlife viewing Its prime location in northern Tanzania, on the banks of the Mara River, means that each morning at Singita’s Mara River Camp you’ll wake under canvas in the middle of the Serengeti to the sound of bird calls and be perfectly positioned to observe the Great Migration (should you visit during the right time of year). Though watching a river crossing is a high-drama event that can typically attract dozens of vehicles, staying at Mara River Camp gives you the absolute privacy of the Singita Lamai concession and, rather than spending hours waiting for a crossing, you can leisurely watch the fabled river from the comfort of the lodge. From the game viewing to the location of the lodge along the iconic Mara River, it is hard to beat this under-canvas experience.

A cozy corner at Mwiba Lodge.

A cozy corner at Mwiba Lodge.

Mwiba Lodge, Tanzania

For community visits and cultural exchange Mwiba Lodge sits in an idyllic location overlooking a watering hole on the Arugusinyai River and is set on a 129,000-acre reserve bordering the Ngorongoro Conservation Area on one side and the Serengeti National Park on the other. The lodge balances the indulgences of a permanent safari lodge with the immersive wilderness experience of a tented camp: Though the 10 tented suites have hardwood floors and glass sliding doors, they also have canvas walls allowing you to fall asleep to the sounds of the bush at night. One of the standout experiences at Mwiba is the opportunity to go on a bush walk with the nomadic Hadza, a local hunter-gatherer tribe of only 1,300 members, who live as they have for centuries. Lodge guests can learn how they forage for food in the harsh landscape and, from the lodge, there is also the chance to visit a Maasai village to learn about their incredible culture and tradition. I believe that a combination of time in the bush and also with people—giving opportunities for cultural immersion and exchange—is what makes for a perfect safari experience, and Mwiba’s location allows guests to find that ideal mix.

Segera Retreat, Kenya

For blend of traditional safari vestiges and cutting-edge African art Segera is a nine-guesthouse resort-like property in Kenya’s Laikipia region that puts a large focus on sustainability and conservation programs and showcases an amazing collection of safari-related antiques and 21st-century African art. Safari traditionalists will appreciate the wonderful memorabilia such as signed Hemingway letters and the vintage plane used in the film Out of Africa (guests who stay at the property can experience a safari from the sky), as well as the pieces from owner Jochen Zeitz’s modern art collection, and the property’s “4C” vision (a balance of community, commerce, culture, and conservation), which Jochen pioneered by uniquely applying to sustainability.

Mombo Lodge, Botswana

For the Okavango Delta

There is no landscape in the world quite like Botswana’s Okavango Delta, a 6,000-square-mile wetland paradise covered by a labyrinth of waterways filled with animals. Mombo is an eight-suite intimate camp on Chief’s Island in the Moremi Game Reserve in the Delta. The camp can claim numerous distinctions, including being the priciest safari lodge in Africa, but most importantly, it changed the course of Botswana’s history and of ecotourism when it opened in 1991 by setting a new bar in the design of sustainable safari camps (the camp is 100% solar powered). The game viewing from the reserve is truly unparalleled—cheetahs, prides of lions, packs of wild dogs, elephants, leopards, and black-and-white rhino are all prevalent on the concession—and the wild floodplains that you can explore from camp ensure that every drive is filled with excitement.

Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, Namibia

For the sheer drama of the landscapes As a safari destination, Namibia is known for its intimate lodges set in remote, starkly beautiful places filled with fascinating desert-adapted wildlife. Sossusvlei, in the southern Namib Desert, is an area famous for having the world’s largest sand dunes, and it is also celebrated for its spectacular night skies (the area has been designated as a rare International Dark Sky Reserve). Sossusvlei Desert Lodge sits on a 30,000-acre private desert reserve. The bare minimalism of the interiors parallels the barren vistas in the 11 suites, each with its own plunge pool, as well as retractable skylights positioned to allow stargazing from the bed. The desert safari opportunities from the lodge are incredible: Guests can explore the Sossusvlei dunes and salt pans, take desert walks, go hot-air ballooning, and discover ancient San rock paintings.

The Farmstead at Royal Malewane, South Africa

For walking safari and trackers The Farmstead at Royal Malewane is a groundbreaking public/private partnership in the Greater Kruger area (the lodge was built with the sole purpose of benefiting the community) and was created by the Biden family, one of South Africa’s leading hospitality families. The Farmstead beautifully merges modern farmhouse design with a vibrant palette of colors and contemporary African Art. With only three suites and a three-and-a-half-bedroom villa, The Farmstead is often considered one of the hardest lodges to get into in South Africa and also one of the best. The lodge has a number of master trackers and renowned guides (the highest of all the lodges in South Africa) and, right from the base of the lodge, you can head on multiple walking safari trails with an expert ranger. It’s an incredible way to experience the bush and a unique opportunity in South Africa.

Bisate Lodge, Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

For the endangered mountain gorillas, one of the most special animal-viewing experiences in the world Set on a hillside overlooking the volcanic peaks of Bisoke and Karisimbi in Volcanoes National Park, Bisate features six villas that resemble massive weaver nests. The interiors mix comforts like soaking tubs and fireplaces with elements of traditional Rwandan crafts, such as the colorful kitenge fabrics. Bisate is a perfect base for trekking to see endangered mountain gorillas as well as golden monkeys—though not your traditional safari experiences, both are extraordinary animal encounters—and Rwanda is a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts and those who want to witness the positive power of safari tourism to preserve wildlife and empower local communities.

Reassuring and responsive
It's a little unnerving to make plans with a company half way around the world. But John was very responsive to my questions and dealt quickly with any problems. He was courteous and helpful. It was a seamless process to plan our trip and I would recommend him and Safari.com.
This luxury service experience was… first-Class Service with a Smooth Landing
This luxury service experience was fantastic, especially for a first-timer like me. My consultant went above and beyond to find exactly what I was looking for. They were incredibly professional and made the whole process very smooth. There was a bit of a wait for confirmation, which is something I'm used to getting instantly when booking myself. However, this is a minor detail compared to the incredible service and personalized tour I received. The wait was completely worth it in the end! Thanks to this company, I had a truly exceptional experience. As a first-time user of this kind of service, I couldn't have asked for a better provider. Highly recommended!

Luxury holidays in South Africa: A safari with a difference at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

A South Africa safari is on most wishlists, while a five-star South Africa safari is the kind of experience that only your wildest dreams are made of, writes Stephanie Holmes

I arrive at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, a luxury lodge two hours’ drive southeast of South Africa ’s stunning coastal city, Cape Town , after more than 30 hours of travelling. The mammoth journey has left me feeling zombie-like, so I’m sure I can be forgiven for paying no attention to the bush surrounding this stunning property perched on a hill overlooking the coast.

First impressions are, quite fairly, hogged by the astonishing view from the lodge’s deck, where I sit – still long-haul unwashed – sipping on a welcome mocktail in the fresh air and winter sun. A 180-degree panorama of Walker Bay and, further beyond, the South Atlantic Ocean, stretches before me. Luxurious sofas and loungers surround a shimmering infinity pool, while inside the lodge, expansive windows and cosy nooks mean those views are always in sight.

This luxury is reason enough to visit, but there are other, greater reasons too. Here’s what to discover on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve .

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve combines luxury and nature, offering stunning views, unique botany and conservation efforts. Photo / Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

Brilliant botany

Grootbos’ surrounds are home to a rare and delicate landscape, where birdwatchers and botanists can be immersed in nature and breathe fresh, fragrant floral air.

The lodge is situated on 3500ha of milkwood forest and fynbos plains in South Africa’s Cape Floral Kingdom. This is the smallest of the world’s six floral kingdoms and the only one found entirely within one country. It’s home to astounding biodiversity – more than 9500 plant species are found within the CPK, 70 per cent of which can be found nowhere else on Earth.

The CPK stretches from the Eastern to the Western Cape of South Africa, so Grootbos and its surrounding fynbos plains and milkwood forest make up just a small part of it. But even so, there are more than 900 species of plants found here, as well as 118 bird species, 29 mammal species and 21 species of amphibians – some of which are under threat of extinction.

Grootbos is on 3500ha of milkwood forest and fynbos plains in South Africa's Cape Floral Kingdom. Photo / Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

In generations past, this land had been cleared for use as a tobacco farm and cattle fields but, after devastating wildfires, the owners sold in 1991 to the Lutzeyer family, who remain the owners. In 1996, the family decided to start a modest B&B, but over time their interests have evolved - the site now boasts two lodges, luxury villas , an art gallery and a charitable foundation.

The land is protected as part of the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy - an organisation working to conserve an area of the Cape Floral Kingdom spanning more than 20,000ha. It’s estimated that 11 per cent of the CPK’s species are found here.

I get to explore the unique environment on a flower safari with my fantastic Grootbos guide, Bongani, who has an encyclopedic knowledge of plants, insects and birds.

Guests can enjoy a variety of excursions such as flower safaris, marine and coastal safaris, horse riding, scenic flights, and more. Photo / Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

We drive the property in an open-sided 10-seater 4-wheel-drive safari vehicle , with cosy blankets for when the sun drops, and a bottle of wine in Bongani’s chiller bag for sundowners overlooking the vista.

He stops often and nimbly hops out of the jeep, to point out a flower or plant or bird of interest, most of them delightfully unfamiliar, like the Southern Boubou Shrike, the Cape Grassbird, the bokmakierie shrike, the Yellow Bishop, and the Southern Double Collared Sunbird.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is home to over 900 plant species, many unique to the Cape Floral Kingdom. Photo / Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

The South African couple sharing the tour with me have come to Grootbos specifically for its birdwatching and botany experiences. They’re particularly excited about the variety of protea we see, like the limestone sugar bush, which has a sweet liquid inside the plant. Hang it upside down and use it to sweeten your coffee , Bongani tells me, just one of many secrets of nature he shares as part of our tour.

For a deeper understanding of this magical natural world, the lodge is also home to a botanical art gallery – the Grootbos Florilegium, where hundreds of intricate botanical artworks by local and international artists beautifully capture the diversity just outside the door.

Luxurious lodgings

For your stay at Grootbos, choose between one of 11 suites at the family-friendly Garden Lodge, or one of 16 suites at adults-only Forest Lodge. Or truly push the boat out and hire one of two private villas, where you’ll have your own swimming pool, cinema room, wine cellar and gym, private chef, butler and nature guides, and you can arrive by small plane or helicopter on your dedicated landing strip.

I am staying at Forest Lodge where I get a secluded standalone villa nestled in the bush, complete with comfortable lounge and woodburner fireplace; two bathrooms – one of which has huge picture windows looking out to the ocean; a luxurious bedroom ; and large deck with outdoor shower and sun loungers.

Every detail is meticulously planned - like the botanic print artworks of local flora (available to buy at the Florilegium), fully stocked minibar with Nespresso machine, teas and cookies, and a fresh lemon for evening G&Ts. The turn-down service here not only includes lights being dimmed and water left by the bed, but also your fireplace being lit so you come home from dinner to the smell of woodsmoke and a cosy warm suite. In short, it’s the kind of place that as soon as you arrive you feel sad that you’ll ever have to leave.

Guests can stay in private villas with their own pool, cinema room, wine cellar, and personal staff. Photo / Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

Fine dining, affordable drinking

One of the best things about a stay at Grootbos is the fact all food is included in your room rate, from elaborate breakfast buffets and hearty a-la-carte options, to healthy three-course lunches, to five-course dinners.

Head chef Ben Conradie and team provide the kind of food you’d find at the best fine-dining restaurants, and portions are hearty so you’ll never feel hungry. Much of the produce is grown on the property at the on-site organic farm, or otherwise sourced from as close by as possible. And much is also handmade, from pastas to sauces to bread and patisserie.

Even the still and sparkling water is bottled on-site. It comes from a sandstone aquifer on the reserve and is bottled in recycled glass at a processing plant run by the local community – one of the initiatives of the Grootbos Foundation (see below).

Alcohol comes at an extra charge but another great thing about travelling to South Africa is the very favourable exchange rate for Kiwi travellers. I chose a glass of the most expensive sparkling wine on the menu and it cost only 95 rand – that’s about $8.

The deliciously sweet and fragrant fynbos honey also comes from the reserve, thanks to the endangered Erica Irregularis plant, which is found nowhere other than the Walker Bay Conservancy. It flowers once a year, to the delight of the endemic bees and local beekeeper, who harvests the honey and sells it back to the lodge. This is another Foundation initiative - ensuring employment and economic benefits are available to the local community who need it most.

Exciting excursions

Most New Zealand travellers will visit South Africa to go on safari. After spending time in Cape Town and Johannesburg, they’ll head off to the country’s interior in search of the Big Five – lions, rhino, giraffe, Cape buffalo and elephants. But what many don’t know is that there’s a second Big Five to find in SA – a marine big five, consisting of the great white shark, the southern right whale, the bottlenose dolphin, the Cape fur seal, and the African penguin.

Grootbos is the place to base yourself to spot them, with all five found in the surrounding waters.

Walker Bay is known for having some of the best land-based whale watching in the world, with southern rights gathering here between June and December to mate and calve their young. The bay is a protected marine sanctuary and only authorised boats can take to the waters between the peak breeding/calving months of July to November.

No matter, it’s easy enough to spot them from the coastal pathways of towns such as Hermanus and De Kelders, with the whales sometimes coming in as close as a few metres from the shore.

Other excursions include horse riding, marine and coastal safaris, scenic flights and river cruises, as well as many walking trails around the Grootbos property itself.

Charitable futures

Spending time with Bongani, I notice on his hands “love” and “hate” tattooed on his knuckles. If this is a sign of a darker past, it’s the only clue - his gentle, caring nature and electric smiles are a calming joy to be around.

Bongani became a guide thanks to the Grootbos Foundation, a not-for-profit charitable organisation established in 2003, with the aim of creating sustainable and progressive tourism opportunities for the local community.

The foundation has education, conservation and sports programmes, all of which benefit scores of people who would otherwise not get the same chances in life. One example is the Alien Vegetation Management and Clearing scheme, in which teams of local unemployed women are trained and up-skilled then work in the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy to remove alien plants and help with the conservation and regeneration efforts. Sixty-one previously unemployed women are currently working in this project.

At the Foundation’s Green Futures College, 12 people from disadvantaged backgrounds are selected each year to go through a one-year training programme, where they study horticulture and conservation. They also learn essential life skills such as personal finance, business management, computer competency, driving and health education.

Explore coastal pathways in nearby towns like Hermanus and De Kelders, known for close encounters with marine life. Photo / Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

If they complete the course, they gain a nationally accreditated certificate in horticulture and a work placement, or can apply for a second year of study in field guiding.

More than 115 students have graduated since 2003, and more than 90 per cent of graduates have gone into employment.

Bongani is one of those graduates. He went through the programme in 2009, where he discovered his love for horticulture and botany. The foundation spotted his star potential and gave him a guiding job at the lodge; he has since passed two of the three levels of guiding qualification, and says the opportunity has changed his life.

Throughout their course, students work at the college’s on-site nursery learning to propagate fynbos plants and indigenous trees. Bongani puts this nursery experience into action on my last morning at Grootbos.

Bongani, guide at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. Photo / Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

We drive to a patch of sapling trees where I will plant one for myself. The hole has already been dug for me - this is a luxury lodge experience after all - so I simply have to put my tiny milkwood tree into the earth and bed it in.

I get a certificate to take home with me, which lists the exact map coordinates of my specific tree so I can come back and visit it in future.

The Grootbos Foundation provides education and employment opportunities for the local community, including a Green Futures College for horticulture and conservation training. Photo / Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

The trees grow about 4cm per year, Bongani tells me, “so it will be many years before you can come back and have a picnic underneath”.

That’s true, but I take comfort in the fact milkwood trees can live for more than 1000 years, meaning I’ve played a small part in a better future for this very special place in the world.

Sustainable safaris: South Africa's ecology-minded luxury lodges

With safaris in Africa, for a long time now the goal has been to hunt big game. And safari mass-tourism, where dozens of vehicles chase a leopard is increasingly frowned upon. Travel operators are now instead leaning toward another trend - "gentle tourism."

Those who wish to experience wild animals close up also no longer want to do it in a way that harms the creatures. Even better is when safari companies share a portion of their revenues in nature conservation efforts.

Does the money I'm spending only making a profit for the operator? Or is some of it going toward protecting nature? Above all it is the younger generation among safari guests who when they book a tour post are asking such questions and are choosing a travel company according to ecological criteria, reports Julie Cheetham, business manager of Weeva, a platform that supports tourism operators in the area of sustainability.

South Africa's eco-safari push

Cheetham says that South Africa is at the vanguard of eco-safaris. It is above all in the safari segment that she has seen a great amount of reevaluation. Many safari companies are investing in environmental projects, are joining in the battle against poaching and seeking a balance in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

From the outset, eco-safaris begin by offering the most sustainable lodgings possible. Instead of colonial-style buildings of cement and bricks, the focus now is on more environmentally-friendly lodges built from locally sourced materials, Cheetham points out.

One such venue is the new "Tswalu Loapi Camp" in Kalahari in northern South Africa. It consists chiefly of domestic wood and canvas, stands atop stilts, and has elevated walkways. These provide small animals and reptiles shade.

Listing further efforts, the camp is powered by solar panels and rainwater is collected for showers. There are neither plastic bottles nor trash bags, little to no plastic can be seen here. In the restaurant the menu offers seasonal cuisine with, as much as possible, local ingredients from local suppliers.

The safari operator Singita, which runs lodging in the world-famous Kruger National Park, has undertaken similar measures.

More carbon being compensated than emitted

Many eco-safari companies in the meantime are calculating the energy and water consumption of each individual guest - and, to compensate, providing investments in climate protection projects. What remains on the energy consumption side of the ledger are the long distances travelled. But guests are provided an additional chance to compensate for the greenhouse gases caused by their flights.

The effects of this new sustainability are making people sit up and take notice. Tswalu, a 114,000-hectare reservation, has developed into a carbon-positive protection zone. Carbon compensation now outpaces emissions.

The reservation absorbs 13.5 tons of carbon annually, reports Prince Ngomane, who is in charge of sustainability at the Tswalu Foundation. "We only need about a quarter of this. The rest is made available as a carbon credits," he says.

And so it has come about that other eco-operators such as Singita are promising guests a CO2-neutral stay. Or they document in great detail the aspects of a stay according to sustainability criteria. Cheethem mentions as an example that at some eco-lodges, the menus even list the carbon footprint of individual dishes.

Quietly touring the savannah in an electric car

Even in the savannah electro-mobility is a topic being advanced. In the solar-powered luxury lodge "Cheetah Plains" in Kruger Park, they use electric all-terrain vehicles whose batteries are recharged by solar energy. Numerous other lodges are also experimenting with battery-powered off-road vehicles. But this is not without its problems. Safaris usually cover long distances which are too much for many batteries.

So far, recharging stations in the middle of the savannah are scarcely an option, Weeva director Cheetham notes. Another problem is that dust and sand also are a challenge for electric motors. The Tswalu reservation has therefore invested in four smaller conventional safari vans which consume less fuel than normal-sized ones.

There are other safari mobility options - for example touring on foot, saddling up a horse or hopping on a bicycle. Cheetham says all these are increasingly in demand. But instead of being seated safely inside a vehicle, guests have to depend all the more on the expertise of an experienced ranger, one who just in case carries a loaded rifle along.

100% of the profits for nature preservation

For decades, profit was the top aim of the safari tourism industry. Operators made use of nature without any regard of the long-range effects. By contrast, Tswalu today is regarded as a model example for ecological safaris. In 2021 the reservation's owners devoted 86% of their total investments in nature preservation, rehabilitation of natural habitats and the battle against poaching.

"Lepogo Lodge" in Limpopo Province is taking it a step further. This is a non-profit company that returns 100% of its profits to conservation. Named after the Sotho word for "cheetah," the lodge is focusing on the reintroduction and preservation of cheetahs.

Singita sustainability coordinator Dr. Andrea Ferry sums it up: "Since the safari is essentially a natural product, it makes perfect sense for us to be pioneers in conservation."

The lodge itself features 20 suites that can sleep anywhere from two to six people depending on the size. Of course, there are tons of safari-esque amenities and experiences for guests to enjoy like close-up animal encounters, daily giraffe feedings, and opportunities to explore the local watering holes. Savannah Sunset will also have an on-site restaurant, Mahaba Grill, and an on-site spa.

Suites start at $599 per night during the summer season and require a two-night minimum stay. Each reservation includes multi-park admission, private transportation, and daily breakfast. Plus, hotel guests get the bonus perk of bypassing lines for roller coasters and water slides at Six Flags Great Adventure and Hurricane Harbor. If you’re planning a family trip, the resort does have an age restriction. According to Bloomberg, all guests must be at least 5 years old.
