Wisconsin State Patrol advises people not to travel on Friday and Saturday during winter storm

D EFOREST, Wis. (WMTV) - The Wisconsin State Patrol advises people to postpone their Friday and Saturday travels as another winter storm and low temperatures roll through the state.

Trooper Wameng Van said people should limit their traveling if possible on Friday and Saturday during an expected winter snowstorm.

”If you can postpone it, I would advise to do so,” he said. ”With single and sub-zero temperatures, you think about frostbite, just within 30 degrees or so, frostbite can start kicking in already. You want to try to avoid that.”

Madisonian Corliss Karasov welcomes more snow.

”Bring it on! Bring it all on!” she said. ”It’s beautiful, I’m just really upset that we don’t have more snow before this. Because climate change is really bad. I know it’s bad for the wildlife, farmers and everyone who has businesses relying on it.”

Timothy Alston said Tuesday’s storm does not compare to years past.

”I’ve experienced storms that have dropped more than a foot in a 24-hour-period,” he said. “That’s when you just stay home and you wait until things get cleared up so you can go out.”

Still, Vang said the expected drop in temperatures makes driving in the snow dangerous.

”Even though the speed limit does say 70 out there, state law does still require that you have to drive at a speed that’s reasonable and prudent for the conditions you’re driving in,” he said.

If people do drive on Friday or Saturday, Vang recommends they bring warm clothes, blankets, food, water, a charged phone and extra charger.

He also said people should drive at least 200 feet behind snow plows and check 511 WI for road conditions before heading out.

Difficult travel expected in Wisconsin as winter storm approaches

The wisconsin department of transportation is advising that travel may be difficult thursday and friday due to an incoming winter storm system..

MADISON, Wis. (WEAU) - The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is advising that travel may be difficult Thursday and Friday due to an incoming winter storm system packing high winds and moderate snowfall arriving in the state Wednesday.

Road conditions are expected to deteriorate as a result of the incoming weather system, as the combination of snowfall, high winds and cold temperatures could create hazardous road conditions in some part of the state, as well as reduced visibility due to the blowing snow.

The DOT said that travel may not be advised in some parts of the state on Friday as Wisconsin could experience possible blizzard conditions. According to the National Weather Service, strong winds and blowing snow are predicted for Thursday night through Friday night across Wisconsin. Wind gusts could be as high as 55 miles per hour and limit visibility with the fresh snowfall. High-profile vehicles, such as trucks, are also at risk of losing control or tipping over in windy conditions.

In addition to the hazards for motorists, conditions could become too challenging for tow companies and emergency services to help stranded or disabled motorists. With sub-zero wind chills expected, traveling could become dangerous in Wisconsin.

If you have to travel, the DOT said to plan ahead and use 511wi.gov to monitor winter road conditions and view live traffic camera videos along their route.

Preparation before winter travel

• If you must travel, check 511wi.gov for road conditions or incidents along your route. Download the 511 Wisconsin app to monitor conditions on the go. Monitor 511 Wisconsin on Twitter (@511WI) for the latest incidents and information.
• Clear snow and ice from vehicles before traveling.
• Fill the gas tank and windshield washer fluid.
• Have a fully charged phone and an emergency kit in your vehicle .
• Alert others about your route and expected travel time.

Precautions while driving

• Snow means slow. Allow extra travel time, following distance, and reduce your speed during winter conditions.
• Be cautious on bridges, overpasses, and entrance and exit ramps.
• Don’t be overconfident in four-wheel or all-wheel-drive vehicles. All vehicles require additional time and distance to stop in adverse conditions.
• Avoid using cruise control in winter conditions.
• Buckle up and put your phone down while driving. Every trip, every time.
• Leave room for maintenance vehicles and snowplows. Move over or slow down for stopped emergency vehicles.
• Stay at least 200 feet behind a working snowplow. Make sure that you can see the plow’s mirrors to ensure the driver can see you.
• In case of a crash or slide off, stay in the vehicle, turn on the hazards, call 911 and move vehicle(s) out of traffic if possible.

Trucking companies and their drivers are strongly encouraged to review their schedules and routes, and plan accordingly. Commercial motor vehicle drivers should check 511wi.gov before departure and throughout their trips for current travel impacts and advisories. Reconsider travel to Jamaica due to  crime and medical services . U.S. government personnel under Chief of Mission (COM) security responsibility are prohibited from traveling to many areas due to increased risk. Please read the entire Travel Advisory. 

Country Summary:  Violent crimes, such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides, are common. Sexual assaults occur frequently, including at all-inclusive resorts.

Local police often do not respond effectively to serious criminal incidents. When arrests are made, cases are infrequently prosecuted to a conclusive sentence. Families of U.S. citizens killed in accidents or homicides frequently wait a year or more for final death certificates to be issued by Jamaican authorities. The homicide rate reported by the Government of Jamaica has for several years been among the highest in the Western Hemisphere. U.S. government personnel under COM security responsibility are prohibited from traveling to the areas listed below, from using public buses, and from driving outside of prescribed areas of Kingston at night.

Emergency services and hospital care vary throughout the island, and response times and quality of care may vary from U.S. standards. Public hospitals are under-resourced and cannot always provide high level or specialized care. Private hospitals require payment up front before admitting patients and may not have the ability to provide specialized care. Ambulance services are not always readily available, especially in rural areas, and are not always staffed by trained personnel.

We strongly encourage you to obtain traveler’s insurance, including medical evacuation insurance, before traveling to Jamaica. The Department of State does not pay medical bills.

Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance. U.S. citizens with medical emergencies can face bills in the tens of thousands of dollars, with air ambulance service to the United States in the range of $30,000-50,000.  Read the  country information page  for additional information on travel to Jamaica.

If you decide to travel to Jamaica:

• Do not attempt to bring firearms or ammunition.  This includes stray rounds, shells or empty casings . The penalties for carrying firearms and/or ammunition, even inadvertently, are severe, and can include lengthy prison sentences.
• Avoid walking or driving at night.
• Avoid public buses.
• Avoid secluded places or situations.
• Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
• Be aware of your surroundings and keep a low profile.
• Enroll in the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)  to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.

Boil-water advisory lifted in Atlanta after water system problems

ATLANTA (AP) — Residents in Atlanta no longer must boil water before drinking it, officials said Thursday, six days after a water main break west of downtown affected service and spurred the advisory.

Normal water flow and pressure was restored citywide on Wednesday, but more time was required to test for bacteria to ensure the water was safe to drink.

The first rupture took place Friday and was repaired on Saturday. A second leak that began later Friday wasn’t fixed until Tuesday .

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said Wednesday that he would support a plan to spend $5 million to reimburse businesses for losses during the water outage. He also promised an assessment of the city’s infrastructure and to deploy monitors to detect leaking pipes.

The boil-water advisory never covered the whole city, and it was lifted for most affected areas on Monday. But it remained in place for downtown and Midtown Atlanta as well as some neighborhoods to the east.

Atlanta’s water outages are the latest example of failing infrastructure across the country. A 2022 crisis in Jackson, Mississippi, which has a long-troubled water system , left many residents without safe running water for weeks. Other cities including Flint, Michigan , have also struggled to supply residents with safe drinking water.

The first-term Democratic mayor has been under fire for Atlanta’s response to the leaks, especially because Dickens left town after the first major leak to travel to Memphis, Tennessee, where he held a fundraiser for his 2025 reelection campaign and met with that city’s leaders to discuss crime and other issues.

Dickens’ administration said it wasn’t clear that the first leak west of downtown would create a major disruption when he proceeded with the trip. A second major leak in the city’s Midtown neighborhood began later Friday.

Planning to travel to Michigan for a Great Lakes getaway this summer? Hot temperatures might have you itching to go for a cool dip in one of Michigan’s many lakes — but the dip itself might leave you itching. 

At any point in time, several Michigan beaches and bodies of water may be closed due to high bacteria levels and contamination. These bacteria and other microscopic parasites can cause irritating skin conditions . Swimmer's itch, otherwise known as cercarial dermatitis, is one such condition that can affect humans. 

How do the parasites and bacteria that cause swimmer's itch spread?

According to the Centers for Disease Control, swimmer’s itch arises from a water-borne parasite that originates from the feces of waterfowl, such as ducks, and inhabits snails.

The problem arises when the parasite leaves its first host (a water snail) and instead of finding a fish or bird — its next host, typically — to attach to, finds the flesh of an unsuspecting swimmer or lake frolicker. The parasite burrows under the skin and dies quickly, but a rash can develop minutes, hours, or even days after coming into contact with contaminated water.  

Swimmer’s itch is rare, but cases rise during the summer months in areas around freshwater and saltwater lakes. A lake in Northwestern Michigan’s Benzie County, for instance, reported a 1,000% rise in cases of swimmer’s itch in August 2023, compared to the same time in 2022.

So, before you cannonball into a lake this summer, read on about swimmer’s itch, how one contracts it, how to treat it, and how to prevent it.

Has swimmer's itch been found in Ohio waters?

The Ohio Department of Health describes swimmer's itch as a waterborne disease. The Outbreak Response and Bioterrorism Investigation Team of the ODH is currently investigating waterborne disease outbreaks.

According to Verywell Health , swimmer's itch is found in all 50 states but is most common in the Midwest's Great Lakes region. That includes Ohio as well as Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan and Ontario, Canada.

Which Ohio lakes have water quality warnings?

The Ohio Department of Health maintains a list of beach water quality advisories .

As of June 3, 2024, three beaches at Grand Lake St. Mary's in Auglaize County have recreational public health advisories because of algal blooms and toxins in the water.

High bacteria levels at East Fork Lake east of Cincinnati has led to an ongoing bacteria contamination advisory. The same holds true for Turkey Creak Lake and Roosevelt Lake at Shawnee State Park in Southern Ohio and several beaches along Lake Erie.

So, if you plan to travel to Lake Erie for a mini vacation or to swim in local waters near you, arm yourself with knowledge and be wary of the itch.

What causes swimmer’s itch?

Swimmer’s itch can be contracted if you come in contact with contaminated water, say by swimming or spending time in a contaminated freshwater or saltwater lake or public pool. The parasite burrows into the skin of the swimmer and the immune system reacts, causing a rash.

It's important to note that swimmer's itch is not contagious.

The parasite does not survive under human skin.

What are the symptoms of swimmer’s itch?

Small red pimples and blisters accompanied by itching, burning and tingling of the skin near the rash are the most common symptoms. They can last up to a week , per the CDC. 

What are swimmer’s itch treatments?

Per the CDC, most swimmer’s itch cases do not need medical attention . Corticosteroid creams and cold compresses can provide relief, as well as soaking with Epsom salts or an oatmeal bath. A baking soda paste (baking soda mixed with water) can also help.

Last but not least, shun the response that is most gratifying at the moment — scratching. We all know not to do it, but , scratching increases the chances of infecting the rash further.

If the itch is unbearable, pharmacists can provide prescription-strength anti-itch lotions or antihistamines.

How do you prevent swimmer’s itch?

The most straightforward way to avoid swimmer’s itch is to avoid wading into contaminated waters. If you’re in Ohio, consult the ODH website listing beach advisories.

If you're heading to Michigan to explore some of the other Great Lakes, you can check which lakes are closed because of contamination on the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy website.

Swimming in deeper waters is less risky, since larvae are commonly found in shallow or weedy waters by the shoreline. Run (well, swim away quickly) if you spot a lot of snail shells or muddy, mucky waters.

Swimmer’s itch guards do exist in the form of gels specially formulated to repel waterborne parasites. Apply waterproof sunscreen and insect repellent as a barrier, and towel off and shower after leaving the water. 

What if my dog gets swimmer’s itch?

If your dog is like a fish in water, you might want to find ways to protect your them from the water’s microscopic parasites.

Many of the same rules apply: Avoid visiting contaminated water bodies and steer clear of the shore or weeds. Dry off your dog with a clean, dry towel after a dip in the water.

If you notice an itch or scratch, you might want to consult your vet for treatment options, like an anti-itch cream or shampoo, to speed up the healing process.
