From July 15 to August 23, diocese leadership will review proposals and an official list of recommendations will come out by September 1.

On June 14, Bishop Fisher released the following statement:

"Over the past two weeks, we have met with parish leadership groups to explain in detail our recommendations for parish mergers. These recommendations put forth - backed by the data supplied by parishes - as well as future projections, illustrate our best faith effort to provide a plan that will ultimately strengthen the Catholic Church In Western New York. I understand these parish and worship site recommendations are difficult for many, as churches that have been home to generations of the faithful unfortunately have to merge and close for the future viability and vibrancy of our parishes and the diocese as a whole. Our effort to renew the diocese was hastened as we continue to work to satisfy the requirements of our Chapter 11 reorganization process. We look forward over the next month to continue the dialogue with our parish leaders to decide on what is best for the diocese, and the faithful, moving forward. As always, you remain in my prayers, especially in light of this transformational time in our history."

Churches begin making revisions to Buffalo Diocese’s recommended closures

B UFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — On Wednesday night, the Buffalo Diocese recommended the closure or merging of St. George, St. John Neumann, along with several other worship sites in their Wyoming Genesee Vicariate following the Buffalo Diocese restructuring .

Parishioners across the diocese told News 4 this process has made the last two weeks unbearable, saying a new list coming out one by one instead of at once is like reopening a wound again and again.

As of Wednesday night, the churches recommended to close is nearing 50. Parishioners have until July 15 to make their counter proposal.

“Nobody wants anybody’s church to close,” Christine Fruchtel, an Our Lady of Perpetual Help trustee, said.

“This is why this is the recommendation phase, there are components that we don’t always know that are taking place in parish communities,“ Vicar for Renewal Father Bryan Zielenieski said. “This is why they’re taking the recommendations back, looking them over, and is there something that we missed that maybe we need to be aware of?“

Across the diocese Wednesday, church families like those in the Tonawanda’s gathered with their local priest to voice concerns over schooling and ministry. They laid out a tentative revision to the recommendations.

“You know, the people care, so to see so many come out to want to ask questions, to voice their concerns, it shows that they’re trusting in me as their pastor with transparency, but it also validates the conversations of the people that love their church, they love their faith, not just the buildings, but the faith itself,” Family No. 18 Father Michael LaMarca said.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the old first ward had a similar meeting Wednesday to create a proposal to counter the diocese, claiming the diocese doesn’t have the right numbers when it comes to their sacraments and donations.

Until the last year, all their records were on paper, not the Parish Data Ministry Software (PDS) every church now uses.

“Most of the pages are using this PDS system, we’re using it now also, but all of our back information has not been entered into that,“ Fruchtel said.

“The numbers they have had have been incorrect from 2016 up until 2022,” parishioner Patrick Gorman said. “They’re closing or trying to close us on false pretenses. All the numbers are incorrect.”

The diocese has since been given the corrected numbers.

The diocese told News 4 that the number of recommended closings must stay the same in any revisions from parish families.

“Who is honestly going to say, ‘No don’t close that church, close our church,’?“ Fruchtel said.

“You go against them to make up for the mistakes that we made,” Gorman said. “It’s not our fault that they are in this position, it’s their fault, and their punishing the people whom they want to stay in the faith.”

There are two more church recommendation lists that have yet to be announced. Tomorrow’s meeting with the clergy and trustees will discuss the Southern Erie County Vicariate.

Complete list of Catholic churches Buffalo Diocese plans to close or merge

by: Aidan Joly , Dillon Morello , Kayleigh Hunter-Gasperini , Katie Skoog , Nick Veronica

Updated: Jun 14, 2024 / 04:02 PM EDT

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Buffalo Diocese rolled out its recommendations this month for local parishes to merge or close as it seeks to “ rightsize and reshape ” itself amid a series of challenges.

The complete list will be continuously updated on this page. In total, the diocese plans to reduce in size from 160 parishes to about 106, a decline of 34%.

Bishop Micahel Fisher said he understands these recommendations are difficult, but believes they “illustrate our best faith effort to provide a plan that will ultimately strengthen the Catholic Church In Western New York.”

The reshaping comes during a challenging period for the diocese, with declining numbers of priests and parishioners compounded by its October  announcement  that settling nearly 900 claims of childhood sexual abuse will cost at least $100 million. Roughly 600 of those cases involved clerics, including some with multiple allegations.

WIVB News 4 has obtained lists of parishes recommended to be closed or merged from numerous meetings with church officials and parishioners since the diocese’s initial announcement in late May.

You can see the updated list below, arranged by church “family.” Western New York’s Catholic churches have been organized in a family model since 2022 to help optimize resources, rotating masses and priests through nearby churches in families of three to six (a list of families can be seen by clicking here ).

“This plan resulted from the lessons learned as we brought parishes together in the parish family model and determined rather quickly that scaling back the number of parishes would best allow us to use our limited resources to help reenergize a spiritual renewal in the diocese,” Fisher said.

To make the recommendations that are being presented, the diocese examined parish demographics, sacramental participation, and financial support, said Rev. Bryan Zielenieski, Vicar for Renewal and Development, who leads the diocese’s “Road to Renewal” effort.

“We also looked at the variations of our urban, suburban and rural parishes because factors like poverty rates, availability of transportation, proximity and limited resources impact overall parish long-term vitality,” Zielenieski said.

The diocese went through a similar process over 15 years ago, which led to the closure of over 70 worship sites across eight counties by 2011.

“This is a natural part of life, change unfortunately change can be difficult, there’s always hope that’s why we are a faith filled people,” Zielenieski said.

Some parishes have already announced plans to close, including St. Lawrence  in Buffalo and  St. Andrew’s  in Tonawanda. Prior to any closures, the dioceses says 76% of churches have less than one baptism per month and marriages have decreased by 24%. Current trends also point to only having 38 priests available to break bread by 2040.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.

On Friday, June 14, Bishop Michael Fisher released a statement, saying:

This list will be updated as more information becomes available.

Buffalo Diocese closing, merging 40 churches in Western NY amid financial struggles

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo is recommending 40 churches in Western New York to close or merge due to financial struggles.

WIVB reports the Buffalo Diocese plans to cut a third of Western New York’s 160 parishes, four years after filing for bankruptcy . The diocese is also facing declining numbers in priests, parishioners and donations as it also pays out at least $100 million to settle nearly 900 cases of child sex abuse.

The first 40 churches that will close or merge include St. Anthony and St. Joseph in Fredonia; St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Blessed Mary Angela in Dunkirk; St. James’ Our Lady of Victory site and Holy Apostles’ St. John site in Jamestown; St. Aloysius Gonzaga and Infant of Prague in Cheektowaga; Blessed Sacrament, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Andrew Kim RC Mission in Tonawanda; and multiple locations in Buffalo and Niagara Falls.

“This is a natural part of life, change unfortunately change can be difficult, there’s always hope that’s why we are a faith filled people,” Rev. Bryan Zielenieski, of Vicar for Renewal, told WIVB.

According to WKBW , some parishioners are attempting to prevent closures by designating at-risk churches as local landmarks through a new campaign dubbed “ Save our Sacred Sites .” If Buffalo’s Common Council apporves landmark status, the churches may be eligible for grant funding and tax credits.

More churches are expected to close in the coming months as the diocese plans to trim its number of worship sites from 160 to 106 by September 1. Mergers will begin in October, according to WIVB .

Other dioceses in New York state that have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in recent years include those based in Syracuse , Rochester , Albany , Ogdensburg and Rockville Centre on Long Island. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse, which is closing two schools and shutting down a retreat center , said last month it was close to exiting bankruptcy and paying settlements to hundreds of sex abuse survivors.

Unleash Your Summer Spirit: Must-Do Activities in WNY

People walking on the boardwalk at Canalside in downtown Buffalo in summer.

Canalside in downtown Buffalo offers a variety of summer activities.

By Shannon O'Sullivan

Published June 14, 2024

The Buffalo-Niagara region’s most anticipated season has arrived! With a plethora of festivals, concerts and outdoor recreation, you can fill your summer weeks with endless activities and delectable delights. Here are some #UBTrueBlue ideas for a sensational summer in Western New York.

Festival and Fair Season

People marching through a neighborhood with rainbow flags and clothing.

The summer celebration season kicks off the first week in June with the  Buffalo Pride Festival and Parade and Buffalo Greek Fest.

The pride festival and parade honors and supports Western New York’s diverse LGBTQ+ community. As it winds through the historic Elmwood Village , the parade features floats and performances from more than 150 organizations. The festival follows the parade at Canalside downtown and includes musical and drag performances, as well food and drink.

Buffalo Greek Fest also takes place in Elmwood Village at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. Celebrants can sample the finest Greek ambrosia, including souvlaki and gyro. Guests can also expect Greek cultural exhibits and traditional Greek dancing. The proximity of both festivals makes for an enriching and entertaining start to the summer festival season for the whole family.

The second weekend in June marks the Allentown Art Festival . Since 1958, Buffalo’s historic Allentown neighborhood has showcased the finest artwork, crafts and photography from talented artisans. Dozens of tents are set up throughout Allentown, which invite attendees to peruse and purchase exquisite paintings, jewelry, photography and more. Allentown hosts a vibrant bar and restaurant district, and it’s one of the best times to try out Gabriel’s Gate – renowned for having some of the best wings in the city.

June is jam-packed as Buffalo also celebrates Juneteenth, the nation's longest-running African American holiday . The holiday commemorates the arrival of Union troops in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, when they announced the end of slavery and enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, two years after it was made effective in the U.S. The Juneteenth Festival of Buffalo has been a community staple since 1976 and is held on Buffalo’s historic East Side in and around Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. Attendees can engage in an array of educational and cultural activities that “…preserve and promote the broad spectrum of African American heritage.”

In late July, fans of Italian cuisine can look forward to  Buffalo’s Italian Heritage Festival . Located in Buffalo’s historic Little Italy neighborhood on Hertel Avenue in North Buffalo, the fest includes a performance stage for entertainers, as well as crafts and games.

Also held in late July is a summer favorite in Western New York: Canal Fest. Taking place along the Erie Canal between the City of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda, revelers can experience a carnival-like atmosphere with rides, games and fireworks. This eight-day event contains various activities and food for the whole family.

Lasting for 12 days in August, the Erie County Fair caps off the summer festival season and is a brief, 30-minute drive from downtown Buffalo. In addition to thrill rides and games, fairgoers can enjoy live music performances, stand-up comedy acts and a demolition derby.

Summer Concert Series and the Buffalo Waterfront

Brutalist architectural style music venue.

Buffalo’s premiere summer concert venue, Artpark , is celebrating 50 years of showcasing world-class musicians and performers in 2024. Artpark’s grounds contain over 150 spectacular acres amid the backdrop of the Niagara Gorge. Before taking in live music at the park’s breathtaking amphitheater, concertgoers can experience the natural beaty of the area and explore the quaint town of Lewiston. Just a 20-minute drive to Niagara Falls and about a 30-minute drive from downtown Buffalo, Artpark is well worth the excursion.

Live music enthusiasts have numerous opportunities to catch performances at the Buffalo Waterfront downtown. Check out the concert schedule at the Outer Harbor. Every Sunday evening in July and August, music fans can also view more intimate performances in the beer garden as the sun sets via the free Sun Down Wine Down series .

Additionally, Canalside offers a slew of daily summer activities, including kayaking, paddle boating, a boardwalk and outdoor fitness classes. When hunger and thirst strike, the food and beer garden, as well as nearby restaurants, are in walking distance.

Tuesdays also offer opportunities to catch outdoor concerts. The Bidwell Concert Series runs from June through August in Bidwell Parkway, part of the Olmsted Parks Conservancy , in the Elmwood Village. Food Truck Tuesday at Larkin Square downtown offers cuisine from dozens of food trucks throughout the summer with a rotating lineup of live music acts.

Next-Level Thrill Rides

People in lifejackets on a boat tour in white-capped waters.

Thrill seekers can venture to Six Flags Darien Lake . Less than an hour’s drive from downtown Buffalo, Darien Lake is New York State’s largest combination Theme Park and Water Park Resort. Six rollercoasters and unforgettable rides like the 242-foot tall Sky Screamer , as well numerous water park rides, will satisfy any need for adrenaline-fueled fun. There is also a campground next to the park for those who want a multi-day visit coupled with a quiet camping experience at night.

Whirlpool Jer Boat Tours pair an exhilarating thrill ride with the natural wonder of Niagara Falls. Adventurers can choose to depart from either Lewiston or Queenston, Ontario, Canada — both locations are about a 15–20-minute drive from Niagara Falls. Riders have the option of cruising down the whirlpool rapids of the Niagara River in either a covered boat to stay dry or in an open-topped one to get soaked. Either way, this is one of the most unique and exciting activities for a Buffalo-Niagara summer.
