PM Modi To Lay Foundation Of Sant Ravidas Temple In Madhya Pradesh's Sagar On August 12

Sagar district is located in the impoverished region in northeast Madhya Pradesh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on August 12 lay the foundation stone for a Rs 100-crore temple dedicated to the 14th-century mystic poet and social reformer Sant Ravidas in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district, where he will also address a public meeting ahead of assembly polls, a state BJP minister said on Monday.

This will be PM's second visit to the BJP-ruled state, where assembly polls are due by the year-end, in just over a month. On July 1, PM Modi interacted with tribal leaders, women who were members of self-help groups, and young football players at Pakaria village in Shahdol district.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expecting up to 2 lakh people to attend the PM's rally and the foundation laying ceremony for the temple in Sagar dedicated to Sant Ravidas, who enjoys a nationwide following, especially among a section of Dalits.

The two programmes will also mark the culmination of the ruling party's ongoing 'Samrasta (harmony) Yatras', seen as an attempt by the saffron outfit to reach out to Dalits ahead of the polls.

“Five such yantras started from different parts of the state on July 25. The participants are bringing a handful of soil from 53,000 villages and water from 315 water bodies, including sacred rivers. The yatra will reach Sagar on August 11 evening,” MP Cooperative and Public Services Minister Arvind Bhadoria told PTI over the phone.

Between 1.50 lakh and 2 lakh people are expected at the public meeting and the foundation laying function, he said.

The BJP has taken out the yatras to connect with different sections of society, especially Dalits. MP has 35 assembly seats, of the total 230, reserved for Scheduled Castes and of these, the BJP won 18 in the last elections, while the Congress bagged 17.

Another BJP leader said the main aim of the yatras is to promote social harmony and amity.

The saffron party is making attempts to strengthen its base among Dalits. Some time back, the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government built a Rs 3.5 crore Sant Ravidas Temple in the holy town of Maihar in Satna district.

Dalit followers of Sant Ravidas, one of the most renowned figures of the bhakti movement in the medieval India, form a sizeable chunk of the SC population in the state.

Mr Bhadoria, who is also Sagar district guardian minister, said according to a tentative plan PM Modi will reach Sagar around 1 pm.

He said the PM will address the rally and lay the foundation stone of the proposed Rs 100-crore Sant Ravidas temple near the Dhana helipad, about 20km from the Sagar district headquarters.

The BJP had put up a good show in the 2018 polls in the Bundelkhand region which consists of six districts -- Sagar, Chattarpur, Tikamgarh, Niwari, Damoh and Panna -- and accounts for 26 assembly seats.

In the last assembly polls, the BJP won 15 seats in Bundelkhand, while the Congress had to contend with 9. One seat each went to the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party. In Sagar district, which has eight seats, the BJP won six and the Congress two in 2018.

The previous UPA government had announced an economic package of Rs 8,000 crore for Bundelkhand, part of which is located in Uttar Pradesh, after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's visit to the impoverished region.

PM Modi to visit poll-bound Madhya Pradesh on August 12, unveil new railway line

PM Modi will dedicate to the nation the project marking the completion of the doubling of the Bina-Kota rail route. The additional railway line will be launched in Sagar, and will help ease coal movement.

Listen to Story

pm modi sagar visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Madhya Pradesh on August 12. During his visit to the poll-bound state, he will lay foundation stones, including that of rail and road sector projects.

Slow movement has had an immediate impact on the movement of coal in Eastern MP to more than half a dozen thermal power projects between Bina and Kota.

The 288.236 km Bina-Kota railway line doubling project will reduce the turnaround time in movement of freight and passengers on the section.

The project was announced in 2012, but work commenced in the right earnest only in 2019. The project was completed in January 2023. It has been executed by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL).

“There are at least 8 power stations between Bina and Kota that are supplied with coal by the railway route. Earlier, with just one line existing between Bina and Kota, this movement was slow, but with the new line, the turnaround time has been reduced in a big way, allowing for an increase in coal volume transported too,” said DK Pandey, Chief Project Manager, RVNL, who has been overseeing the project for some years.

The railway line was cleared for 110 kmph maximum sectional speed, right from the beginning. The project, which has been built at an estimated cost of more than Rs 2,475 crore, passes through Kota and Baran districts in Rajasthan, and Guna, Ashoknagar and Sagar districts in Madhya Pradesh.

India launched its SAGAR vision in 2015 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Indian Ocean island states of Seychelles, Mauritius, and Sri Lanka. MEA says SAGAR vision in action as neighbourhood leaders invited to PM Modi's swearing in: What it is?

Several heads of state from neighbouring countries will be present at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony tomorrow.

The Ministry of External Affairs has said leaders from Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Nepal and Bhutan have been invited in keeping with India’s steadfast commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and the Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) vision.

🇮🇳’s Neighbourhood First & SAGAR vision in action! The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in an official statement on Saturday said, “President of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe; President of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu; Vice-President of Seychelles, Ahmed Afif; Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina; Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth; Prime Minister of Nepal, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’; and Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay, have accepted the invitation to attend.”

But what do we know about it?

Let’s take a closer look

What is it?

India launched its SAGAR vision in 2015.

As per The Hindu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the term during his visit to the Indian Ocean island states of Seychelles, Mauritius, and Sri Lanka.

Modi laid out the vision for the initiative during a keynote speech to the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).

“Our vision for the Indian Ocean Region is rooted in advancing cooperation in our region and to use our capabilities for the benefit of all in our common maritime home,” Modi said as per Byjus.

ORF describes the SAGAR vision as proposing security as a collective pursuit based on shared interest.

It said the plan is a framework of morality that respects the “legitimate strategic imperative of all civilised nations.”

The idea behind SAGAR is to fortify India’s economic and security connections with its maritime neighbours, as per News18.

The plan is also aimed at helping them advance of their maritime security capabilities.

New Delhi has said it will cooperate with its neighbours under the scheme when it comes to sharing information, coastline surveillance, infrastructure development, and capability enhancement.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at the fourth Indian Ocean Conference said the SAGAR vision is meant to be “consultative, democratic and equitable,” as per News18.

According to DrishtiIAS , the scheme is meant to protect India’s national interest.

It also looks to guarantee that the Indian Ocean region becomes ‘inclusive and collaborative’ and that nations respect international law.

India is also looking to explore the benefits of the Blue economy under the SAGAR initiative.

This includes creating jobs, achieving energy independence, creating ecological resilience and strengthening connectivity with neighbours.

According to Byjus, the vision initiative can be defined as the following:

Security: Enhancement of coastal security so that land and maritime territories can be safeguarded with relative ease.

Capacity Building: Deepening economic and security cooperation for smooth facilitation of economic trade and maritime security.

Collective Action: Promoting collective action to deal with natural disasters and maritime threats like piracy, terrorism and emergent non-state actors.

Sustainable Development: Working towards sustainable regional development through enhanced collaboration

Maritime Engagement: Engaging with countries beyond our shores with the aim of building greater trust and promoting respect for maritime rules,

norms and peaceful resolution of disputes.

The scheme also gains significance as it is meant to counter China.

Beijing through its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has been attempting to increase its sway in the Indian Ocean Region over the past few years.

This is part of its larger ‘string of pearls’ theory.

Initiatives

According to ORF , India under SAGAR initiative carries out patrols and naval exercises with Japan, Australia, the US, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Thailand.

These exercises aim to enhance cooperation between the nations and target illegal activities such as maritime terrorism, IUU fishing, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and armed robbery.

India also launched Mission Sagar on 10 May, 2020, as part of its plan to deliver aid to its neighbours during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of this Mission, INS Kesari visited Maldives, Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros and Seychelles to deliver assistance to our maritime neighbours.

Kesari returned to India on 28 June, 2020, after travelling 7,500 nautical miles over 55 days.

India’s humanitarian assistance included supplies of essential food items, medicines, Ayurvedic medicines and deployment of Medical Assistance Teams (MAT) to Mauritius and Comoros.

PM Modi swearing in

The swearing-in ceremony of PM Modi and the Council of Ministers is slated for Sunday evening.

The seating arrangement has been done for over 8,000 guests who will be attending the ceremony. The list has been prepared and invitation cards have been sent. The guest list includes labourers, lawyers, doctors, artists, cultural performers, and influencers.

There were speculations that the oath ceremony might be held at Kartavya Path but because of ongoing weather conditions, it was confined to Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Modi’s leadership of the NDA was formally endorsed, with crucial support from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal (United).

The NDA commands a strong position in the Lok Sabha with 293 MPs out of 543. Among these, the BJP holds the largest share with 240 seats.

In the 2019 elections, the BJP secured a total of 303 seats.

NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday made his first official visit to Kashmir’s main city since New Delhi stripped the disputed region of its semi-autonomy and took direct control of it in 2019.

Addressing a crowd in a soccer stadium in Srinagar, Modi announced development projects and said previous governments had misled people over the region’s now-scrapped special status.

“The success story of Jammu and Kashmir will be the center of attraction for the world,” he told the crowd, saying that the region has prospered since the 2019 move. “I have always said that the hard work I am doing is to win your hearts. I will work towards winning your hearts further.”

Modi and his party have accused Kashmir’s pro-India parties of being corrupt, misleading Kashmiris and promoting separatism in the region. Kashmiri politicians, who say their special status was a constitutional guarantee, have called Modi divisive and anti-minority.

Thousands of armed paramilitary troops and police in flak jackets maintained extra vigilance across the Kashmir Valley, the heartland of the ongoing rebellion against Indian rule in the majority-Muslim territory, where many residents strongly favor independence or a merger with Pakistan. Modi’s two previous visits to Kashmir after its status was changed were to the Hindu-dominated city of Jammu.

Modi did not mention plans to hold elections in the region or to restore its statehood, both demanded by Kashmir’s pro-India political parties. The last election for the regional legislature were held in 2014, but the government elected then was dismissed in 2018.

In 2019, Modi’s Hindu-nationalist-led government revoked the region’s semi-autonomous status, annulled its separate constitution, split the area into two federal territories — Ladakh and Jammu-Kashmir — and removed inherited protections on land and jobs. The Muslim-majority region is now run by unelected government officials and bureaucrats.

Image

India’s powerful home minister, Amit Shah, has repeatedly promised that the region would regain statehood after elections.

In December, India’s Supreme Court upheld the 2019 decision and asked the government to conduct polls by September.

The region has been on edge since 2019, as authorities put in place a slew of new laws that many residents fear could change Kashmir’s demographics. The move was welcomed in much of India , where the Modi government was cheered by supporters for fulfilling a long-held Hindu nationalist pledge.

In New Delhi’s effort to shape what it calls a “new Kashmir,” India has shown no tolerance for dissent, curbing civil liberties and intimidating media .

Ahead of Modi’s visit to Srinagar, government forces laid razor wires and erected checkpoints on roads leading to the venue. They randomly frisked residents and searched vehicles, while navy commandos in motorboats patrolled the Jhelum River that snakes through the city.

Authorities ordered thousands of government employees, including teachers, to attend the meeting, and most schools in the city were closed for the day.

Thursday’s event is seen as part of Modi’s campaign ahead of national elections scheduled in April and May.

Such security measures have been common in Kashmir since 1989, when rebels began fighting against Indian rule.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, and both claim the Himalayan region in its entirety. India insists the Kashmir militancy is Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. Pakistan denies the charge, and most Kashmiris consider it a legitimate freedom struggle. Tens of thousands of civilians, rebels and government forces have been killed in the conflict.

In Kashmir, question still lurks: When will J&K see state polls?

Several checkpoints have come up across Srinagar as part of heightened security measures, a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the city on Thursday, his first since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, soon after his government returned to power for a second term. The PM’s visit comes at a time when parties in the Valley are pressing the government to hold simultaneous Assembly elections with the ensuing Lok Sabha polls. J&K has not had an elected government since 2018.

“Whenever the situation deteriorated in Jammu and Kashmir in the past, we had leaders like H D Deve Gowda, I K Gujral, Manmohan Singh and Atal Bihari Vajpayee who tried to restore democracy, but for the first time we have a government at the Centre which doesn’t want to hold elections here,” former chief minister Omar Abdullah had said in December last year. Dictatorial J&K govt has pulled out all stops to gather crowd for Modi’s rally: Omar Abdullah

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has accused the Jammu and Kashmir administration of “pulling out all stops” for ensuring a crowd for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally here and said that the BJP would not be able to do so on its own.

“Tomorrow the godi media & agencies will be gushing about the “historic crowd” gathered to hear PM Modi in Srinagar. What they will conveniently forget to mention is that almost none of the people there will be attending of their own free will. The dictatorial J&K Govt has pulled out all stops to give the PM a crowd because the BJP can’t manage anything in J&K without the administration,” Abdullah said on a post on X.

Why the BJP is focussing on Kashmir

The BJP never had any strong base in Kashmir, but this time it hopes to win the Anantnag seat. It is placing its hopes on the changing political equations in the seat in the wake of the 2022 delimitation exercise with the addition of Poonch and Rajouri areas to the constituency. These two areas have considerable Gujjar-Bakerwal, Pahari Muslim and Hindu voters, a sizeable number of whom are BJP supporters.

What's on PM Modi's agenda during his Kashmir visit today?

PM Modi will launch projects for the tourism sector under the “Swadesh Darshan” and “PRASHAD” (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation And Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive) schemes. This also includes a project for the integrated development of the Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar. Modi will also distribute appointment letters to nearly 1,000 newly recruited government employees in J&K and also interact with the beneficiaries of various central schemes. He will then address a public rally at Bakshi Stadium, which will be tracked closely for its messaging.

I will be in Srinagar tomorrow, 7th March to take part in the ‘Viksit Bharat Viksit Jammu Kashmir’ programme. Various development works will also be dedicated to the nation. Notable among them are works worth over Rs. 5000 crore relating to boosting the agro-economy. Various… — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) March 6, 2024

Welcome to our Live Blog!

Good Morning and welcome to our Live Blog where we will be covering everything related Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Srinagar today. Follow this space for all latest news and updates from the political circles of the country.

Question still lurks: When will J&K see state polls?

Several checkpoints have come up across Srinagar as part of heightened security measures, a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the city on Thursday, his first since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, soon after his government returned to power for a second term.

The PM, who was in Jammu last week, is likely to address a public rally at Bakshi Stadium and announce a slew of projects related to agriculture and tourism. The meeting, whose venue was shifted from the Sher-e-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), is likely to be attended by around two lakh people, including government officials, BJP workers and locals.

The last time Modi visited Kashmir was in February 2019, ahead of the Lok Sabha polls then, as part of his tour to all three regions of the former state. In April 2022, he had addressed elected representatives of local bodies on National Panchayat Day in Jammu.

Red carpets and yellow yoga mats: Five moments from Indian PM Modi's state visit

pm modi sagar visit

WASHINGTON – For nearly a decade, Narendra Modi wasn’t allowed to set foot in the United States.

But times, titles and political agendas change.

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden welcomed Modi, the prime minister of India, to the White House on Thursday for a state visit filled with the kind of pomp and pageantry afforded only to the nation’s closest friends.

Standing next to Modi on the White House South Lawn, Biden said he has long believed that the relationship between the United States and India will be “one of the defining relationships of the 21st century.”

Modi was denied a visa to enter the U.S. in 2005, when he was the chief minister of the Indian state of Gujarat, over accusations that he had failed to stop deadly riots against minority Muslims. But now that he’s the leader of the world’s largest democracy, the Biden administration has been embracing him more closely as it seeks to counter China’s global influence.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

Given Modi’s history with the U.S., there were bound to be some unusual, and even awkward, moments during his state visit:

Pomp and pageantry: Here's why Democrats and Republicans welcome a visit from right-wing Indian PM Narendra Modi

Red carpets and yellow yoga mats

Not many state visits start with yoga.

But Modi not only walked the red carpet, he stretched out on a yellow yoga mat.

Modi, a yoga enthusiast, and roughly 1,000 other practitioners of the Hindu spiritual and aesthetic discipline demonstrated their technique on Wednesday, Day One of Modi’s four-day visit to the United States.

The 72-year-old grey-bearded prime minister took his place on a mat on the grassy North Lawn area outside the United Nations headquarters in New York. For the next half hour, he practiced breathing exercises, meditation, backbends and other poses.

"Namaste," he told the crowd before the exercises began.

The event was held in recognition of the International Day of Yoga, which Modi persuaded the U.N. to observe annually not long after he became India’s leader in 2014. This year’s event set a Guinness World Record for most nationalities – 135 – at a yoga session.

Modi’s message to his fellow yoga enthusiasts: "Let's use the power of yoga, not only to be healthy, happy, but to be kind to ourselves and each other.”

Yoga diplomacy: Ahead of U.S. state visit, India's leader takes to his mat at the U.N.

The first lady and Modi take a field trip

The first couple of times the Bidens hosted a foreign dignitary for a state visit, Jill Biden arranged an outing with the leader’s spouse.

She took Brigitte Macron, wife of French President Emmanuel Macron , to the interactive Plant Word museum just a few blocks from the White House. Kim Keon Hee, wife of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, got a private tour of the National Gallery of Art.

But Modi’s spouse didn’t accompany him on the trip to Washington. What’s more, Joe Biden wasn’t in town for Modi’s arrival on Wednesday. He was traveling back to Washington from California, where he had been raising money for his reelection campaign.

So the first lady and the prime minister took a quick field trip to National Science Foundation in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside Washington, to highlight workforce training programs.

Modi, who arrived late, missed a demonstration of a robot creating abstract art on paper and another showing how an underwater robot can be used to aid fishing. But in brief remarks, he said his government has established labs in schools to encourage young entrepreneurs.

His goal, he said, is to make this decade a “tech decade.”

A plant-based feast

The night before the official state dinner, the Bidens hosted Modi for a private dinner at the White House, where they dined on a few of the president’s favorite foods, including pasta and ice cream.

The menu for the official state dinner on Thursday catered to Modi’s palate.

Modi is a vegetarian, so the 400 invited guests were served an entirely plant-based meal: A salad of marinated millet. Corn and compressed watermelon. Stuffed portobello mushrooms and saffron risotto. Strawberry shortcake infused with rose and cardamom.

The first lady enlisted the help of chef Nina Curtis, who specializes in plant-based cooking, to work with White House chefs to come up with the menu.

Guests were given the option of adding fish to the main course.

Modi (finally) meets the press

It’s not unusual for Biden to hold a joint news conference with foreign leaders when they visit the White House.

But when Modi took the dais in the White House East Room on Thursday for a Q&A with Biden, it was a remarkable turn of events.

Modi, who tries to avoid unscripted moments and has presided over a steady decline in press freedom in his country, has never held a solo news conference and often avoids questions by deferring to others on stage with him.

Biden and Modi each answered two questions – one from an Indian journalist who asked Modi about climate change, the other from a Wall Street Journal reporter who pressed him on human rights concerns. It was the first time Modi had fielded a question at a news conference since he came to power in 2014.

The news conference was a scaled-down affair compared with those usually held as part of a state visit. Even so, Modi’s advisers were far from thrilled with the idea. Administration officials advised his team that taking questions from the media was standard protocol for White House state visits.

Modi’s people finally relented and agreed to the news conference – but not until the day it was to be held.

'No space for discrimination': India's leader claims government doesn't have a human rights problem

'No space for discrimination' in India

Modi’s state visit infuriated human rights advocates who blame him for widespread attacks against India’s Muslims and other minorities.

Biden’s administration has accused India’s government of participating in unlawful and arbitrary killings, restricting freedom of speech and allowing violence against religious, racial and ethnic minorities. A group of more than 70 lawmakers asked Biden in a letter Tuesday to raise the human rights concerns during Modi’s visit.

But during his joint news conference with Biden, Modi insisted there was no discrimination in India and argued that democracy is in India’s DNA.

“Democracy is our spirit, democracy runs in our veins – we live democracy,” he said, speaking through an interpreter.

“There's absolutely no space for discrimination," he insisted, which must have been news to his detractors.

At a joint press meeting with her Bangladeshi counterpart, PM Modi said the neighbouring country is situated at the confluence of New Delhi's Neighbourhood First Policy, Act East Policy, Vision Sagar and Indo-Pacific Vision.

We welcome Bangladesh's decision to join the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative. The first cross-border friendship pipeline between India and Bangladesh has been completed. PM Narendra Modi further said the two countries are focusing on connectivity, commerce and collaboration. He said the two nations will enhance focus on digital and energy connectivity to spur their economies.

"Both sides are ready to initiate talks on CEPA to take our economic ties to new heights...54 rivers connect India and Bangladesh – we have cooperated over flood management, early warning and drinking water projects. We have decided to initiate technical-level talks on the renewal of the 1996 Ganga Water Treaty. For the conservation and management of Teesta river in Bangladesh, a technical team will visit Bangladesh soon," PM Modi added.

PM Modi said India and Bangladesh have prepared a futuristic vision, which includes green partnership, digital partnership, blue economy and space.

"We have met 10 times in the last one year. However, this meeting is special because Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina is the first state guest after the third term of our government,” he added.

PM Hasina said India is Bangladesh's major neighbour and trusted friend.

"Bangladesh greatly values its relations with India," she said.

She invited PM Modi to visit her country.
