Miami Seaquarium rescues a baby manatee in 1955 as the park goes into construction. Later in 1955, the Miami Seaquarium   opened its doors as it became one of America’s oldest marine life parks.

Building design

• In 1955, industrialist Fred D. Coppock of Greenville, Ohio decides to undertake his 14-year dream to build a $2 million aquarium in Miami. The tanks in the Seaquarium use modern materials and glamorized geometries to present a natured tamed for striking consumption. A geodesic dome embarks the same atmosphere as that of Disneyland.
• The Seaquarium changed drastically in 1960 as its new owners Wometco Enterprises decided to enlarge the park. The best addition to the design was the inclusion of the geodesic dome to cover the stage for the performing seals and the seating for the stadium. On the south side of the dome structure, it includes a band of gold metal plating to hide the occupants from the sun.

• A filmmaker going by the name of Ivan Tors shot the first episode for his new television series – ‘Flipper’ at the Miami Seaquarium. It was at the Miami Seaquarium as well that the first ever “Salty the Sea Lion” movie was shot.
• In 1968, Miami Seaquarium introduced Hugo, the first of its giant killer whales into the park. In 1975 the first baby female manatee born in captivity was born here.
• In 1986, it was the first time in modern history that at the Miami Seaquarium, one of the dolphins underwent an X-ray. This method allowed doctors to know that it had bronchitis.
• In August 1992, Hurricane Andrew hit South Florida causing the Seaquarium to be closed until December 15th.
• Manatee Caroline at Miami Seaquarium became the first ever manatee to receive an MRI test to discover her illness. In 1998, the Miami Seaquarium kicked off its Water and dolphin exploration program. In this program, guests can now enter and have up-close encounters with the dolphins.
• Twenty-six Nile crocodiles are currently present at Miami’s leading attraction. Miami Seaquarium has also successfully released an amputated manatee into Biscayne Bay. The manatee known as Venus suffered from fishing line entanglement in her right flipper. This caused a serious infection and she had to be amputated to save her life.
• The aquarium has seen the birth of the first-ever Pacific white-sided dolphin which was born under human care.

South directions

Make sure that you take US1 North, exit. It is just to the right which is just before the ramp on I-95 and make sure that you keep following the sign that leads to Biscayne and Rickenbacker Causeway

• Parking for cars or motorcycles is $20 per vehicle (subject to change).
• Parking for a passenger van, limo, camper, or RV is $20 per vehicle (subject to change).
• Parking for school buses is complimentary with field trip bookings.
• If you need to park for an event, then the entire day parking is $30.
• If you are looking for a car rental to visit the Miami Seaquarium ‘Sixt’ is pleased to offer car rental.

Experiences

• Virtual Reality Underwater World – Individuals can wear a waterproof VR headset and breathe using a snorkel. This new innovative technology helps to create an immersive underwater experience . You can choose to experience these three: Dragons, Ocean, or Space.
• Royal Swim – It is one of the most fun and exhilarating experiences to be had at Miami Seaquarium. You shall be able to feel the thrill of two dolphins pushing you from your feet. You can also have the chance to do a special dorsal tow with two dolphins.
• Meeting a Dolphin – It is a perfect chance for families to get up close and personal with dolphins. You will also be able to educate yourself about their resident families and the Miami Seaquarium’s conservation mission. Each session will go on for approximately 10 minutes.
• Dolphin Odessey – You will have about 30 minutes to experience one of the ocean’s beloved creatures. The experience will include and is not limited to handshaking, getting rubs, and feeding the dolphin. Every session can be distinct and different in its way.
• Shark Interaction – it is an all-new experience that involves coming face to face with Nurse and Ray sharks in a mangrove forest close to Biscayne Bay.
• Touch Pools – You will be able to immerse your hands in touch pools and touch bamboo sharks and cleaner fish. It is the kind of experience designed to make you want to not leave after experiencing it. It is especially the case if you have several sharks swimming and giving you kisses.
• Flamingos – You will be able to meet 30 flamingos as soon as you enter the park. These birds are surrounded by and kept in a perfect tropical environment allowing them sufficient room to wander around and breathe freely. You can even take pictures of these birds and meet them.
• Dolphin Encounter – This highly charged 30-minute program is a wonderful experience for kids and young adults alike to have an experience with a dolphin. The dolphins will swim up and stand next to you. Practice a few training signals and shake hands with the dolphins in there.
• Seal Swim – It is a 15-minute interaction in which you will be freely swimming alongside the seals. During the session, you can make handshakes with seals, give it a hug or a kiss, and take part in a training session.
• VIP Tour – This VIP tour allows you to get up close and personal with exotic animals. The tour lasts for 2 ½ hours and you are guided by a personal guide on an adventure.
• Penguins – These are the newest creatures added to the Miami Seaquarium. They will greet you as soon as you walk into Penguin Isle.
• Reef Presentation – The Seaquarium’s reef presentation features over 750,000-gallon saltwater aquarium beaming with fishes of diverse sizes and colors. A diver works his way around the aquarium and visitors can watch him feed tropical fish, stingrays, and moray eels.

Important Guidelines

Make sure for your enjoyment and safety you thoroughly read the guest code of safety and conduct. This is available for free on the Miami Seaquarium’s website . If you fail to follow any of the guidelines given, the park has every right to eject you from the premises without any refund. This is also to allow you and others to have a safe and memorable experience.

Other Key Reminders

• Clothes – Make sure you are wearing comfortable clothes that you feel free to walk around in.
• Weather – Make sure to check the weather before coming to the aquarium. If it is going to be a sunny day make sure to wear protective glasses, and hats and apply sunscreen lotion.
• Arrival – To explore the park in its entirety, keep a reminder to arrive as early as possible. This will allow you to traverse through all the experiences in enough time. Also be careful to look at the schedule of all the show timings and presentations beforehand. This is so you do not end up missing any of your favorite shows or animals.

The Florida Aquarium is excited to offer a variety of programs to meet the needs of educators.

Planning Your Field Trip

Bring your students to The Florida Aquarium for an unforgettable adventure!

School field trips are available Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM – 5 PM. Field trip prices and other information is only valid for the school year indicated below.

Reservations are required . Field trips can be reserved up to three (3) months in advance. Groups needing to reserve more than 3 months in advance will be subject to a $50 non-refundable deposit.

Field Trip Admission

School field trip admission is a self-guided adventure through The Florida Aquarium, allowing classes the opportunity to explore our many diverse habitats and species at their own pace.

School field trips require a minimum of 10 students to receive the Self-Guided Field Trip Admission Rates.

Annual Aquarium memberships are not accepted for field trip admission.

Adult/Chaperone Policy

Complimentary Adults : 1 for every 5 students

Additional Adults (Permitted): 1 for every 3 students

Please note: Any additional teachers, staff, parents, chaperones, etc. arriving with the group will be charged the stated Adult Field Trip Admission Rate.

• March – July: $14 per student

Hillsborough County Head Start Students

• Monday – Thursday only

Title I Schools*

• K – 12
• Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Manatee and Polk counties only.
• August – February: $6 per student
• March – July : $7 per student

*Must be a designated/approved, federally funded program

Adult Field Trip Admission

• Adults exceeding the complementary 1:5 ratio
• Maximum adults permitted 1:3 ratio
• School personnel will determine who is included in adult ratios
• Teachers, aides, counselors, parents, etc. are all included in this ratio
• $26 per adult*, when included in the maximum permitted adult count and final group payment

*The field trip rate is not valid at the ticket window. Admission purchased individually online or at the ticket window is subject to general admission fees.

Lunch Options

The Aquarium provides a picnic area, the Sea Star Pavilion at the lunchtime assigned to you. Schools may bring lunches or pre-order from Café Ray at least two weeks in advance. All group lunches from Café Ray must be ordered in advance. Click the link below for the lunch menu and order form.

Reservation Tips

• Please have two or three possible date options in the event that your first choice is not available. Dates can book quickly as the Aquarium does have a daily group capacity.
• A 30-minute lunch time will be assigned to groups eating lunch at the Aquarium during their visit. Groups can bring lunches with them or preorder from the Aquarium. All group lunches must be preordered at least two weeks prior to your visit. To preorder your lunch, please complete the lunch order request form.
• Any changes to your program-including cancellations/postponements, change group totals-must be made by calling (813) 273-4015 or emailing [email protected] . A voicemail message or email is sufficient for cancellation notice.
• Consider using our preferred education transportation partner ESCOT Bus Lines . Special rates for Hillsborough and Pinellas County are available by calling them at (727) 545-2088.

The Florida Aquarium

Looking for a great family-friendly day trip? How about visiting an aquarium? They are educational, fun and offer at least some air conditioned relief from those really hot Florida spring and summer days.

How Aquariums Have Evolved

The first public aquarium opened in the London Zoo in 1853 and the circus giant, P. T. Barnum, quickly followed three years later with the first American aquarium, as part of his established Barnum’s American Museum in New York City. These were actually small exhibits by today’s standards, but thus began our quest to see what lies beneath the ocean.

On a bigger scale in Florida, it was 1947 when Newton Perry opened Weeki Wachee Springs. The underwater theater, with just 18 seats, advertised live mermaids and the show amazed crowds, but also offered a glimpse of a world that few had ever seen.

Around the same time, Jacques Cousteau was co-developing the aqua-lung which allowed him to explore under water and he went on to publish his most successful book, The Silent World: A Story of Undersea Discovery and Adventure, in 1953. He, of course, ended up being a household name when it came to underwater adventures.

Over the years, through innovative people like Perry and Cousteau, we have learned more and more about our oceans and formed a love affair with the magical underwater world filled with an array of amazing creatures. Aquarium display innovations have also continued to evolve with larger tanks and unique viewing platforms. Today they not only allow visitors face-to-face encounters, but hands-on touch pool experiences.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Home to the Aqua film stars Winter and Hope of the Dolphin Tale movies, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a must if you have a fan of the movie in your family. A great family-friendly educational and entertaining attraction.

A large portion of the aquarium facility is outdoors and subject to weather condition cancellations. Plan your visit accordingly. While admission is very reasonable, plan to pay extra for the chance to feed and take photos with the marine stars of the movies.

Miami Seaquarium

Although not as large as a certain Central Florida marine theme park, Miami Seaquarium also features trained dolphin and killer whale shows. Exhibits showcasing sea turtles, seals, sea lions, and the Florida manatee offer a fun day of exploration.

SEA LIFE Orlando

Located along the city’s International Drive is Florida’s newest aquarium, SEA LIFE Orlando . Step inside the underwater 360-degree tunnel for an amazing view of sharks and turtles, plus get up-close-and-personal with hard-shell shore creatures the attraction’s Rock Pool area.

SeaWorld Orlando

SeaWorld Orlando is not exactly an aquarium, but the marine theme park has indoor exhibits that offer unique views of penguins, sharks, and turtles – Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin, Shark Encounter, Wild Arctic and Turtle Trek. There is also a Manta Aquarium and underwater viewing of Shamu and dolphins.

Tip: SeaWorld Orlando admission is required to visit any of these exhibits.

The Florida Aquarium in Tampa

The Florida Aquarium is more than 150,000 square feet of air conditioned educational fun with tanks large and small, including the Coral Reef Gallery which showcases one of the most beautiful and diverse ecosystems in the world, usually reserved for experienced divers. There is also an outdoor two-acre wet-play zone for kids - Explore A Shore.

Tip: This is a great place to stay cool while awaiting your boarding time when sailing from the Port of Tampa .

Epcot’s Future World at Disney World

Florida’s largest salt water aquarium, with 5.7-million gallons, is located within Disney World. The attraction was initially themed as an underwater exploration base, but was reimagined and renamed as The Seas with Nemo and Friends. Besides the Nemo and Friends ride, it also houses the technically advanced and popular, Turtle Talk with Crush .

Epcot admission is required to visit The Seas with Nemo and Friends. This is a Fastpass+ attraction . Reserve a day and time for your visit up to 30 days in advance.

The Controversy

Marine theme parks and aquariums have come under fire by animal rights groups that argue inhumane treatment of animals performing in shows. They have also called into question how specimens for exhibits are obtained and displayed.

While this will always be a concern, the good they do cannot be overlooked. Their rescue and rehabilitation programs save a large number of animals each year. The bottom line is these attractions all care for the well being of animals and help educate the public.
