Mathura, Vrindavan and Gokul are very important destinations for pilgrimages in India for the devotees of Lord Krishna. These places have many temples depicting the religious significance, stories and teachings of Lord Krishna. I recently visited these holy places with my grandparents on a one day trip from Agra and here I have jotted down an itinerary including all the important places to visit in Mathura Vrindavan and Gokul you should not be missing out on.

Our trip’s onset was from Gokul which is a small town where Lord Krishna had spent his childhood days and from where all his playful stories originate.

An Itinerary Including Places To Visit In Mathura, Vrindavan And Gokul

Reaching gokul:.

We hired a tourist cab from a local tour operator in Agra to cover all the important pilgrim spots in Gokul, Mathura and Vrindavan. We left Agra at around 10:15 AM after having a scrumptious breakfast at DoubleTree by Hilton and reached Gokul at 12 PM. Gokul is located at about 55 Kms from Agra.

We were greeted by two local guides near the temples, so we hired one of them to help us visit all the temples and know more about this pious pilgrim site. Gokul has many small houses painted yellow, temples around narrow lanes and a very peaceful atmosphere. We also bought some nut snacks on the way to feed the cows and monkeys there. You can visit the temples in Gokul at any time between 7 AM to 8:00 PM.

Places to visit in Gokul

Brahmand Ghat:

At 12:15 PM we reached the Brahmand Ghat which is a temple overlooking River Yamuna. There is a story behind this temple according to which Lord Krishna had swallowed some mud particles here and then showed the entire universe to his foster mother Yashoda in his mouth. We spent some time here at the bank of River Yamuna feeding the fishes and also sprinkled some drops on ourselves from this divine river.

Places to Visit In Gokul

Yogmaya Temple:

At 12:45 PM we visited the temple of Goddess Yogmaya who was the daughter of Yashoda and was taken to Lord Krishna’s birth mother Devki. This temple was the birth place of Goddess Yogmaya.

Places to Visit In Gokul

Shri Nand Bhawan Temple:

Then we proceeded to Shri Nand Bhawan Temple which was built about 6000 years ago by Vishwakarma who is considered as the Hindu God of Architecture. At this temple you can swing the idol of Lord Krishna chanting mantras and prayers with the help of the priests. They will also ask you to make donations in the name of God and for the service of the temple. I would only say if you wish to then go ahead or else there is no such need to make any donations.

Places to Visit In Gokul

Vasudevji Temple:

Further, we visited the temple of Vasudev, the father of Lord Krishna. Here there is an idol of Vasudev where you can offer your prayers. Here also they will ask you to make some donations and as I have mentioned before, it’s totally your choice.

Places to Visit In Gokul

We left Gokul at 1:45 PM and headed towards next destination Mathura.

Reaching Mathura:

Mathura is about 30 Kms from Gokul and it took us about half an hour to reach there. The temples in Mathura are open from 5 AM to 12 Noon and 4 PM to 8 PM.

We took a halt in Mathura at Bansilwala restaurant for lunch. This restaurant is located near Krishna Janambhoomi temple which was our next spot to visit. We ordered Thali which consisted of choley (chickpeas curry),  daal tadka (boiled lentils), aloo sabji (potato curry), papaddam, salad, rotis (bread) and rice. The food was good and the restaurant had a really busy ambiance.

Shri Krishna Janambhoomi:

Next we headed to the Krishna Janambhoomi temple which was at a 5 minutes stroll from the restaurant.  This temple is the most significant pilgrim site since it is the place where Lord Krishna was born to Vasudev and Devki. This magnificient holy place is constructed on a huge site comprising of caves depicting the stories of Lord Krishna, devotional areas and temples having beautiful idols of Lord Krishna and Radha.

Places to Visit In Mathura

We spent about two hours at Krishna Janambhoomi  and then proceeded towards Vrindavan to visit the Bankey Bihari Temple.

Reaching Vrindavan:

Vrindavan is located at a distance of 12 Kms from Mathura. There we visited the Bankey Bihari Temple, ISKCON Temple and Prem Mandir. When we reached Vrindavan, our taxi was parked at the outer lane leading to the Bankey Bihari Ji Temple. We then took a rickshaw to reach the temple through the narrow lane at about 6 PM.

Bankey Bihari Ji Temple:

The Bankey Bihari Ji temple is the most renowned and holiest temple. The beautiful idol of Lord Krishna is very mesmerizing, you can just not describe it in words. With the hope of wish fulfillments, this temple is visited by millions of devotees every year to get the glimpse and blessings of the divine idol of Lord Krishna.

After visiting this temple, we bought some pedas (sweets), had some delicious kulhad lassi and chaats from the shops across the lanes. Then again took a rickshaw to get to our cab and left for the ISKCON temple.

ISKCON Temple:

The beautiful ISKCON temple is a very well maintained and cleanest temple. The environment of the temple is very soothing and mesmerizing with the chants of “Hare Rama Hare Krishna”. You will see the devotees soulfully dancing and chanting on the holy mantras of Lord Krishna. The evening aarti which takes place at 7 PM is the best time to visit the temple. There are many facilities within the temple premises for the visitors. You can buy a religious book, gifts, souvenirs, have food or visit the holy museum located upstairs in the temple.

Places to Visit In Vrindavan

Next we headed towards Prem Mandir which is located at 10 minutes distance from the ISKCON temple by cab.

Prem Mandir:

The spectacular Prem Mandir has the most amazing visual lightings, fascinating architecture and sculptures depicting the tales of Lord Krishna. We knew that the most worthy time to visit this temple will be during evening, so we had saved the best for last. We reached there at about 8 PM and got to witness the grandeur of this spectacularly built temple. The statue of Lord Krishna carrying Goverdhan Parbat on one finger was notably stunning.

Best places to visit in Mathura and Vrindavan in a day

Sharing is caring!

Mathura and Vrindavan are the two most popular religious places near Delhi. These religious towns are must-visit places for the devotees of Krishna. Most of the tourists add a day on their Agra trip to visit Mathura and Vrindavan. It’s also convenient to visit Vrindavan and Mathura from Delhi on a day trip. There are dozens of temples here but if you have one day then these are some important places to visit in Mathura Vrindavan in a day.

I recently visited Vrindavan when we took a short trip to Fatehpur Sikri and Bharatpur bird sanctuary .  We kept a day to explore Mathura and Vrindavan. We made the best use of our time and visited some of the most popular temples in Vrindavan and Mathura. Last time I visited Mathura Vrindavan when I visited Agra with my family.

We stayed in Bharatpur and after breakfast for Mathura. It took us around one hour to cover a distance of 40 km. In general road conditions were good except for a couple of km where some construction work was going on. We took a turn from the highway and entered Mathura city. Keep in mind that roads of Mathura are narrow so drive carefully.

Best places to visit in Mathura

Krishan janambhoomi temple.

We first went to the Krishna Janambhumi temple. Before we could go to the temple we have to park our car and parking is not an easy thing when you are in the busy market area of Mathura. Fortunately, we found a parking area near the lane going towards gate number 2 of Krishna Janambhumi temple.

The security is tight and they didn’t allow anything except cash.  Security was not very tight when I visited the last time 9 years ago. That time they allowed us the mobile phone and a camera inside the temple. We were 5 people so we decided to go into two groups so that others will stay outside and can keep handbags.

I and my friends went inside the temple. The female security at the entry gate had patted us in a very strange manner. We ignored it and went inside the temple premise. We were looking for the entry gate for Lord Krishna’s birthplace and by chance, we went towards an arch that looked like an entry gate from distance. It was closed and as we were turning back police personnel spoke to us very rudely and instructed to go away. We told him that we are are looking for an entry gate to the cave where Krishna born. On this, he rudely told us that it’s not here and walked away. We called him from behind to know where should we go but he didn’t respond. What is the point of being inside the temple when you can’t help and guide the people?

To be honest it was a very unpleasant experience. I been to so many temples in different parts of India but never faced such rude behavior. Even in Somnath temple , the official inside the temple or security there is very helpful.

There is a locker room in the lane a few meters before the temple but they have mentioned on board that they are not responsible for the valuables kept with them. How can you keep your mobile phone and camera with them if they have no system? If these things are not allowed inside the temple then there should be some system to keep those. Interestingly inside the temple, there were several shops, not only selling puja material but also selling souvenirs and food items. I am unable to understand why they allowed snacks and soft drinks inside the temple. I again go back to my experience of Somnath temple, there they have lockers and I kept my phone & camera there twice and never faced any issues.

Krishan Janambhoomi temple timing

Summer season : The temple remains open from 5.00 am to 12.00 Noon. In the evening it remains open from 4.00 pm to 9.30 pm.

Winter season : The temple remains open from 5.30 am to 12.00 Noon. In the evening it remains open from 3.00 pm to 8.30 pm.

Potra Kund Mathura

After visiting Krishna Janambhumi we went to Potra Kund that is on the market road near the temple. Potra Kund is an artificial pond that gets water supply from the Yamuna River. There was very little water in the pond. Also, it is surrounded by iron railings from all sides so one can’t enter the Kund. We saw a small gate to go inside the Kund but it was locked. You can see Potra Kund pond from outside the railing.

The legend has that Krishna’s mother Devki used to wash his baby clothes in this pond. These small clothes are known as “Potra” so the name of the pond.

Others believe that when Krishna came to fight with Kans he took a bath here. That’s why it was known as “Pavitra Kund” which later on became Potra Kund.

Temples and places to visit in Vrindavan

After visiting Mathura we went to Vrindavan, which is 11 km away. As soon as we took a turn for Vrindavan we saw broad roads and clean roads. There are housing societies, ashrams flats, and hotels on both sides of the road until the Prem Mandir.

Banke Bihari Temple Vrindavan

Banke Bihari temple was our first stop in Vrindavan.  It is the most auspicious and oldest temple in Vrindavan. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and he is worshipped here as Banke Bihari.

According to the legends, this temple was established by Haridass Ji, who was Guru of Swami Tulsi Dass who wrote Ramayana. The story is that Lord Krishna and Radha appeared in front of Haridass after he sang devotional couplets in their praise. Haridass requested them to appear in one form instead of a couple. On his request, Krishna appeared in the form of Banke Bihari. The idol of Banke Bihari in standing position and black colored because Krishan was dark-skinned.

There is an interesting ritual in this temple. The Priest of the temple keeps drawing a curtain every few seconds to cover the idol. Sometimes people complain that before they can see the Idol properly, the curtain covered it.

On the right side alter is the idol of Radha Krishna with Gopis and on left side idol of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with Nityananda, Swami Prabhupada and his spiritual teacher Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura.

The Aartis of the temple are very lively and very popular among devotees. People dance and sing with live music from instruments during the Aarti time. The environment in the temple gets very electric at that time. There is so much energy everyone inside the temple.

After Aarti, they distribute Prasad of holy water and holy basil near the alter.

There are a couple of counters from where anyone can buy the prasad of fruits or cake inside the temple. These items are made in the temple kitchen and sold at cost price.

Tips for visiting Vrindavan

*** The Monkeys of Vrindavan are very notorious and known for their mischievousness. Follow some of these tips to avoid unnecessary problems. * Don’t wear goggles or glasses when you visit the Banke Bihari temple. The monkeys in that area tend to snatch glasses. * Also don’t open your bags or carry big bags because if you do so and a monkey notice this than there are chances that they try to snatch something from the bag. * Don’t talk on mobile while you in Banke Bihari temple area because monkeys can snatch your phone.

*** Car parking is a big issue in Mathura and Vrindavan. There are a few designated car parking areas, which are not close to all temples. * If you are traveling by your car then park it in the designated parking place and use an electric rickshaw to go from one place to another. There are plenty of electrical rickshaws and they charge 10 INR per person from one place to another if you share. Else you can pay 50 INR for a private electric rickshaw.

Food in Mathura and Vrindavan

The most popular sweet to bring back home from Vrindavan and Mathura is “Pede”. This simple sweet is made by reducing milk and adding sugar in it.

Other than this you can have Malai wali or Pede wali sweet Lassi. Which is usually extra sweet and full of fat.

For food have Kachori, Jalebi, Chaat, Samosa, Aloo Tikki and north Indian dishes.

How to travel to Mathura and Vrindavan

Delhi to Vrindavan is 180 km and Vrindavan to Mathura is 10 km. Both cities are well connected by road and Indian railways.

It is advisable to visit Mathura and Vrindavan along with Agra because it is on the way to Agra from Delhi. Both towns are just 1 km from the main highway.

Or you can visit it with Bharatpur bird sanctuary.

Best time to visit Mathura and Vrindavan

You can visit these cities throughout the year but it is pleasant between October to March in terms of weather.

Brajbhoomi, the land where Lord Krishna was born and raised, straddles the River Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh . At its centre lie the cities of Mathura and Vrindavan, where his name continues to resonate and, many say, his flute still resounds in every bylane and fallen leaf. For the pious, the devout ambience of the riverbank cities is reason enough, but Mathura and Vrindavan have a lot to offer for any traveller, with delicious food, pastoral beauty and ancient legends. Here is our quick guide for 48 hours in these twin sacred cities.

Getting there

A 60km drive from Agra airport, Mathura lies four hours by road from Delhi, and a half-hour drive from Vrindavan. Those arriving by train can disembark at Mathura Junction.

places to visit in mathura

The best season to visit is in early winter, when the temperature is ideal for a soak in the river as well as a trek up the hill. This year, Janmashtami falls on 6 and 7 September. During the festivities, the streets are filled with dance and processions, and temples across Braj are lit up and decorated. You can also time your visit around Hindu festivals such as Holi, when the streets of Mathura come alive with colour and cheer. In the twin towns of Barsana and Nandgaon nearby, Holi is a week-long celebration. Women dress up as gopis (milkmaids) and playfully drive off men with sticks, in a recreation of the way Radha and the other gopis drove off Krishna and his friends when they came to Barsana to play the festival of colour.

Of the places to visit in Mathura and Vrindavan, the Shri Krishna Janmasthan temple complex in Mathura is a must. It is believed to have been built at the exact location where lord Krishna was born. It consists of the Keshavdeva temple, Garbha Griha shrine and Bhagavata Bhavan along with a steep tank called the Potra Kund. Observe the marble pavilions and spacious verandahs, and keep an eye out for the prison cell, built under the structure, where Krishna was born to parents Devaki and Vasudeva. When the temple complex came up, the inner sanctum was constructed right above the famed prison.

Trek up Govardhan Hill near Mathura

A six-hour circuitous trek in the town of Govardhan takes you to the top of this eponymous 80ft-tall sandstone hill. On your way, take a dip in the famed Radha Kund and Shyam Kund by temples steeped in Krishna lore. Look out for the stone cenotaphs while crossing the Kusum Sarovar lake, and for Giriraj Temple—the most popular temple here. Karir shares that the trek is just as much about the fellow travellers. “You’ll come across devotees who take the circumambulation two to three times a day, while saints travel with a cart to eat and sleep throughout the day and night.” If you are lost, the saints make for excellent guides, Karir says, as they are well educated in multiple languages as well as the scriptures of the Vedas and the Upanishads. Alternatively : Swap out the trek for the nearby town of Barsana, said to be the home of Krishna’s beloved, Radha. Just an hour from Mathura, the town is accessible via bus. Barsana is surrounded by four sacred peaks and topped by the Ladliji Temple.

Sweet and savoury treats abound in the streets off Mathura's Holi Gate. Start off at Oma Pehalwan Kachauri Wale, one of the oldest shops in town serving fiery kachoris and crunchy jalebis. For bedai and dubki wale aloo (a signature when it comes to Mathura's street food ) Shankar Mithai Wala has established itself as a favourite among locals. There's no garlic or onion in the food here, but we dare you to tell the difference. Before you leave, get a batch of Mathura ka peda packed at Brijwasi Sweets.

Visit Shri Radhavallabh Lal Ji Temple, Vrindavan

Legend has it that the Shri Radha Vallabhji Maharaj idol in this temple was given as a blessing by Lord Shiva to his devotee Shri Atmadev in appreciation of his arduous devotion. Take off on the trail early in the morning, and you’ll be joined by the devout and the curious, welcomed by locals and blessed by priests on the way as you walk past temples and houses, bylanes and markets and the mighty Ganga. The route can be completed in about three hours, and is commonly covered barefoot.

Trail the seven Goswami temples, Vrindavan

places to visit in mathura

Over the course of many years, the six main goswamis or disciples of Lord Krishna established seven sacred shrines across Vrindavan. “Each consecrated deities of the lord and gave them the names they lovingly addressed him with,” says Karir. Visit the thus- named Radha Damodar Temple, Radha Gokulananda Temple, Radha Gopinath Temple, Radha Shyamsundar Temple, Radha Raman Temple, Radha Govindadeva Temple and Radha Madanmohan Temple for rich oral narratives and Vrindavan’s earliest temple architecture. No two temples seem the same. The smoke and honking of the road give way to the smell of chandan and the vibrations of kirtan in some of these shrines, while at others you can only hear the shuffling of the faithful kneeling before the lord. With a rickshaw steering you through the busy streets, the trail takes up to three hours with enough time to stop for a cup of tea by the River Yamuna.

places to visit in mathura

On the way back, visit the grand ISKCON Temple built in 1975 by Srila Prabhupada, founder of the ISKCON movement. The marble archway resounds with chants of Krishna, and ushers you in the main temple built around a tamal tree. Under its cool green shade, women thread necklaces of dry fruit to offer the deity. Attractions abound the premises, with book stalls, a museum , eateries and a guesthouse where you can learn, eat and stay. If you’re on time, you can catch the Raj Bhog aarti at 12pm right before the temple closes for the afternoon. Be careful to find a spot beforehand, for as the bells begin ringing, devotees are spread across the courtyard—some lost in a dance of devotion, some singing joyfully. With a mic in hand, one by one they take over to devote their song to the lord as the afternoon meal is served to the idols before being shared with the devotees as prasadam.

Hold your breath at Shri Bankey Bihari Temple, Vrindavan

places to visit in mathura

A trip to Brajbhoomi is incomplete without a visit to one of its most visited temples. Steer through the crowds to catch a glimpse of the lord’s idol at Shri Bankey Bihari Temple in Vrindavan. It is believed that the sight of the idol of Shri Krishna in his childhood form is a harbinger of good luck, which is why even the streets of Keshi Ghat, right in front of the temple , remain flooded with pilgrims even before the temple opens. The curtain lifts only for a few moments, but reveals a breathtaking image adorned in hefty ornamentation and divine energy. After the visit, head to the basil forest Nidhivan, where the extant idol of Bankey Bihari was originally consecrated.

Wonder at the mystery of Nidhivan, Vrindavan

places to visit in mathura

Just a few minutes beyond Shri Bankey Bihari Temple, a street segues off the main road into a labyrinth of dingy shops and sandstone houses. On every corner sit mendicants draped in orange, their tumbis delivering enticing tunes full of love. It is said that the grounds of this basil forest should be entered with the right foot to herald good luck. A criss-crossed cane tunnel takes you through a forest of trees. Watch out for monkeys and hold on to your spectacles while you cross the Rang Mahal temple, where Radha is believed to visit every night. Apocryphal stories relate that makeup and ornaments are left here behind locked doors every night, only to be found used the next morning. The temple shuts at 5pm while the forest is closed off after dark, but as the legend goes, that’s when Krishna and Radha visit and the trees dance in coquetry.

Gorge on street food by Keshi Ghat, Vrindavan

places to stay in Mathura

As dusk begins to settle over the glistening river, bonfires are lit across the shore. Some light up the dingy food shacks teeming with locals, some cook the street food–all exuding an orange glow against the night sky. Keshi Ghat and the adjacent Loi Bazaar along the Yamuna is where the pious head for morning ablutions and the foodies head for culinary explorations. Gorge on samosas and rabri, kulhad chai and aloo chaat here, and make sure to stop by Shri Brijwasi for peda, the local favourite. Every day at 6am and 4.30pm a special hour-long aarti takes place on the waters, and hundreds of diyas are left floating. You can catch a boat to the other side of the river for an unobstructed view. Priests and disciples sit in boats, criss-crossing saris as a way of draping the goddess Yamuna, while pilgrims in other boats make offerings of milk, flowers and incense.

Dwarkadhish Temple : #3 Of The Best Attractions in Mathura

Ever seen an idol of Krishna without his flute and peacock feather, two characteristic features we always associate with him? Head to Dwarkadhish Temple in Mathura and you can see one. What sets this 200-year-old Hindu shrine apart from the other temples of the city is that the shiny black marble idol of Lord Krishna here is depicted as Dwarkanath or the King of Dwarka, without his customary flute and peacock feather. Accompanying him is his consort, Radharani, who is carved out of white marble. One of the largest temples in Mathura, this shrine is also known for its exceptional architecture and strikingly beautiful carvings. The entrance of the temple, which is constructed in the Rajasthani style of architecture, leads to an open courtyard with magnificently carved pillars.

The best time to visit the temple is during the swing festival that is celebrated at the start of the monsoons every year. During the festival, the idol is placed on a beautifully decorated silver swing, and the entire temple is decorated with colors. It’s indeed a visual treat, but remember, the place can get a bit crowded at that time.

  • Now, you have ample of time with you. If you feel hungry, take prasad (food) there at any good restaurant. You can check good restaurants in Vrindavan above to explore more options. If you feel like having a complete meal, come to Agrasen for a thali. The e-rickshaw wala will charge 50-80 bucks for dropping you till Agrasen from Radha Govind Dev Ji Mandir.
  • After having prasad, you can walk to ISKCON Mandir and sit in kirtan for some time. Enter from the side gate. The guard will tell you that the darshan is closed but insist him that you regularly come here and want to go and sit in kirtan. Come out at 4 or 5 PM after sitting in kirtan for a healthy amount of time. There are many first-timers who sit in kirtan for hours owing to the beautiful experience.
  • Once you come out around 5 PM, go to Keshi Ghat and take a Yamuna Boat Ride. Sit there for some time if you want. Attend Yamuna Arti at 6 PM.
  • Once you plan to leave, visit Prem Mandir if you want because you might have heard about it in the media every now and then. There is a good evening light decoration there. It will take you about 15-20 minutes to reach there from Keshi Ghat.
  • If you desire to have some chaat, golgappa and street food, you can go to Banke Bihari Lane. Then, spend some time shopping there if you want and retire for the day.

It would be better if you study all these temples prior so that you can connect with it all and appreciate it better. This is a simple 1-day travel itinerary for absolute first-timers to Vrindavan. Vary and alter your plan as per requirements and individual mood. If you feel attached and connected to any place or mandir, sit there for a long time. The meditation on Srimati Radharani and Krishna is more important than rushing to every other place. It's not a competition to visit the maximum number of mandirs. It's all about remembering the sweet Divine Couple.
