Now that we will be cancelling our upcoming trip on the Escape, I am looking to see what we might want to go on in December.  Unfortunately after this month, we can't do a March trip because our children will no longer have the same spring break.  So I'm looking to see which trips might work for December, which, unfortunately is way more expensive than March!  But I digress -- we want to still be in the Haven and we want a ship with a separate Haven restaurant.  What are our options? Which ships have the best Haven set up?

WHAT? We were going to search you out in the Haven for a HELLO next week! So sorry for you having to cancel 😏

The kids don't want to cancel, so there is still a possibility, but my husband is set against going.  Sounds like you are still going?  I am thinking I will see if I can get someone on the phone in a few days at  NCL to tell me how many people are still going.  If a lot of people cancel, maybe a less crowed boat will convince him to go?  Of course, at a certain point, if too many people cancel, won't NCL just cancel the whole thing?

They all have a Haven Restaurant. I've been on Joy and Bliss and they are terrific. Those who have sailed Epic say that it has the best Haven setup.

All ships have a restaurant for the suites servicing Breakfast and Lunch. The big ships above have a restaurant that also serves dinner.   

The Epic has the nicest Haven and nicest Thermal Suite.

Are you booked in the Haven on Norwegian and curious about what to expect from the Haven Restaurant? We have enjoyed it immensely on Norwegian Joy. Here is our experience, which is similar on all of NCL’s ships.

We recently sailed on Norwegian Joy for a Panama Canal cruise and stayed in the Haven again, which is always wonderful. One of the highlights of our trip was the Haven Restaurant, one of the exclusive benefits offered to suite guests in The Haven. Both the restaurant’s food and service are second to none, and its ambiance is contemporary and luxurious.

The Details

• Location: Deck 18 forward on NCL Joy
• Specialty: American fine dining
• Dress Code for breakfast and lunch: Casual
• Dress Code for dinner: Smart Casual
• Breakfast hours: 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. (varies by port)
• Lunch hours: 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
• Dinner hours: 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The Haven Restaurant

A large waiting area is available but usually isn’t needed except at peak dinnertime. A hostess greets you at the door, takes your room number, and assigns you to a table. Don’t hesitate to ask for your table preference; she will do her best to accommodate you.

The restaurant is large and spacious, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Tables for two, four, and more are available, some with banquette seating.

The white-cloth-covered tables are beautifully set with white dinnerware. Fresh orchids adorn each table, welcoming you in style.

Your waiter will come to introduce themselves, ask if you have any food allergies, and will set you up with the water of your choice while you peruse the menu. Unlike other cruise lines’ exclusive restaurants, NCL has one waiter to tend to your needs.

The Haven Restaurant Menu

The food at the Haven Restaurant is globally inspired and always delicious. Below is a sample menu for the Haven.

The breakfast menu is a single page but includes everything from traditional egg breakfasts to a keto omelet. Sides of bacon, hash browns, grits, country potatoes, ham, and sausage are available, as are toast and English muffins.

As always with the Haven, if there is something you want that isn’t listed, be sure to ask. Off-menu-item requests aren’t unusual for the Haven and are accommodated when possible.

In addition to menu items, a continental breakfast buffet is available with many items to choose from, including croissants, yogurt, pastries, sliced meat, cheese, fresh fruit, and more. It’s always a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach.

For lunch, you can select from various sandwiches, soups, salads, or entrees. Be sure to try the Brie Burger. It is delicious. And don’t forget the dessert!

Dinner at the Haven Restaurant is always exceptional. My prime rib, seen below, nearly extended off the plate! Of course, I had to have a little help from my husband with that one.

Love filet mignon but don’t eat seafood? Ask for a double filet and no lobster; it’s no problem. As always, ask for what you want.

Norwegian Cruise Line food: The ultimate cruise guide to restaurants and dining on board

Norwegian Cruise Line has always been a bit of a rebel when it comes to food.

Back in 2000, the company introduced the concept of Freestyle Cruising, and with it, the idea of Freestyle Dining. Guests no longer were assigned to traditional early or late dinner seatings in the main dining rooms on Norwegian Cruise Line 's ships, but rather could decide when they wanted to eat and with whom.

The cruise line also began to roll out specialty restaurants — smaller, cuisine-specific dining venues such as the French-themed Le Bistro and Cagney's Steakhouse — that passengers could reserve for an additional cover charge.

Today, passengers will find more than three dozen dining options, including 21 that require a cover charge or feature a la carte pricing, on board NCL's 17 ships. While the cruise fare covers a number of restaurants, specialty restaurants requiring an extra charge are popular, and new specialty restaurants are introduced with each class of ship.

The onboard restaurant lineup also varies by ship, with those in the Prima, Breakaway and Breakaway Plus classes having a larger selection than the line's older, smaller ships.

How do you make sense of it all? We've compiled a rundown of all the Norwegian Cruise Line food options, from coffee and gelato shops to a la carte restaurants where the tab can easily top $150 for two. Here's what's included, what you'll pay extra for and the ships that feature each dining venue.

American Diner

Included; lunch and dinner

This 1950s-inspired diner featured on all six ships in NCL's Breakaway and Breakaway Plus classes offers quintessential midcentury comfort foods — from cheeseburgers and meatloaf to chicken pot pie and spaghetti and meatballs. Desserts include bread pudding and carrot walnut cake. The food is now all free (Norwegian made this change in early 2024), but if you want to wash it down with a milkshake, you'll need to pay up.

Atrium Cafe

A la carte; coffee and snacks

Atrium Cafe is a coffee and cocktail bar that serves hot and cold beverages along with a selection of cookies, pastries and other snacks. Alternately, some NCL ships feature Starbucks cafes.

Available on : Norwegian Escape, Jewel, Spirit, Star and Sun

Cadillac Diner

Included; breakfast, lunch and dinner

You'll have to head to Hawaii to enjoy the barbecue pulled pork sliders, pretzel bites, Reuben sandwiches and more served up retro-style in the Cadillac Diner. This venue, with its funky black-and-white checkered floor and vinyl booths wedged between two sections of a vintage red sedan, is found exclusively on Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America. It's open 24 hours a day, and everything is complimentary except for the milkshakes.

Cagney's Steakhouse

A la carte; dinner

One of NCL's most popular specialty restaurants, Cagney's features a classic steakhouse menu with plenty of options for seafood lovers as well. The stars are the cuts of aged certified Angus beef (rib-eye, filet mignon, porterhouse and New York strip) with a choice of sauces and side dishes such as truffle mashed potatoes and sauteed garlic mushrooms. Other options include cedar-plank steelhead trout and double-cut Australian lamb chops. Save room for the OMG Caramel-Butterscotch Cheesecake.

Chinese restaurant

Included; dinner, plus lunch on select days

If you're craving shrimp dumplings or a bowl of stir-fried noodles with beef, a number of older Norwegian Cruise Line ships feature a complimentary Chinese restaurant where you can get your fix. Names vary by ship — you'll find Bamboo on Dawn, Shanghai's on Epic, Orchid Garden on Gem, Jasmine Garden on Jade, Chin Chin on Jewel, Lotus Garden on Pearl, Silk on Spirit, Ginza on Star and East Meets West on Pride of America — but the menus are similar.

Coco's

A la carte; snacks and treats

A cross between an ice cream parlor and a candy shop, Coco's features an array of treats — chocolates from around the world, milkshakes, crepes and more — to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Dolce Gelato

When it's midafternoon and the sun in the Caribbean or Mediterranean is blazing, you can head to this takeaway counter on Deck 8 for a cup or cone of irresistibly creamy gelato.

Food Republic

A la carte; dinner and lunch on sea days

This globally inspired specialty restaurant with an Asian-Latin fusion theme remains popular almost a decade after its debut on Norwegian Escape. You'll want to order multiple dishes to share family-style from Food Republic 's menu sections: Sushi Bar (eight different rolls), Hand Helds (everything from pork belly bao buns to kanpachi wonton tacos), Sharing Is Caring (grilled shishito peppers, spicy Korean fried chicken, salt and pepper calamari and more), Noodles/Rice/Soups (shrimp pad thai to Vietnamese Pho Tai) and Sugar Pump (desserts featuring green tea, chocolate and ginger caramel).

Garden Cafe

Sometimes, the buffet is the answer. It's perfect when you get on board the first day and need to grab a quick bite before you explore the ship or when you arrive back after a daylong shore excursion and want to refuel right away without having to change clothes. Garden Cafe offers plenty of options, including carved meats or grilled fish with assorted side dishes, a salad bar, soups, pasta, burgers and fries, and desserts. Most items are precooked and kept warm under heat lamps, so it's not the freshest option, but it's usually packed at breakfast and lunch with guests who like the all-you-can-eat portions.

Available : Fleetwide (except Norwegian Prima and Viva)

Cover charge; dinner

This is a slightly more elevated version of NCL's Teppanyaki restaurant. You'll be seated with other guests around a grill, and as you dine on edamame, miso soup and seaweed salad, the chef will prepare your entree (a choice of chicken, beef, seafood or teriyaki-glazed tofu or one of four combinations) with great flair. These fresh-from-the-grill proteins are served with garlic fried rice and grilled vegetables, and the dessert that follows is either a green tea cake or fruit sashimi.

Hudson's

This circular, light-filled space debuted on Norwegian Prima in 2022 as a new main dining room option. It features the same daily rotating menu as the second main dining room, the Commodore Room, but what sets this venue apart is its bright-and-airy ambience, courtesy of 270-degree floor-to-ceiling windows.

Indulge Food Hall

This new casual dining concept, also introduced on Norwegian Prima, quickly became a popular alternative to the Surfside Cafe buffet (see below) for both lunch and dinner; at breakfast, it serves a similar but more limited menu as Surfside. The appeal of Indulge Food Hall is the variety — there are more than four dozen menu items from seven vendors: Tapas, The Garden, Nudls, The Latin Quarter, Q Texas Smokehouse, Seaside Rotisserie and Tamara — served in small-plate portions. You can enjoy chicken korma, pad thai, pulled pork, crispy fried okra, a mushroom tostada and bacon-wrapped medjool dates, all ordered from your table via a tablet.

La Cucina was Norwegian's sole Italian specialty restaurant until the launch of Onda by Scarpetta on Norwegian Encore in 2018, and the two restaurants are quite different. La Cucina is the more traditional, featuring classic Italian favorites — caprese salad, fried calamari, spaghetti carbonara, pizza, chicken cacciatore and osso buco alla Milanese — while Onda's menu focuses on more finessed modern Italian dishes.

Like Cagney's, NCL's French fine-dining restaurant is a longtime favorite that's featured fleetwide (it's called Jefferson's Bistro on Pride of America). Popular with couples for special occasion dinners, Le Bistro features everything from steak tartare and escargot to braised lamb shank and roasted duck breast. With its a la carte pricing, this is among the richest (and costliest) dining experiences on board, especially if accompanied by a bottle of Champagne or other French wine. Le Bistro restaurants on Norwegian Prima and Viva are especially atmospheric, with dramatic large-scale chandeliers and elegant ivory-and-blue decor.

Vibrant decor and sophisticated Mexican cuisine that goes beyond the usual Tex-Mex fare make Los Lobos an appealing option if you're sailing on one of the six ships that feature it. The guacamole, made fresh tableside, is a must. Other menu options include Mexican-style shrimp ceviche, grilled mahi-mahi tacos, nopales (cactus) salad, chicken mole enchiladas and cochinita pibil (slow-braised pork). Top it all off with a tres leches cake with coconut cream.

Main dining room

Norwegian Cruise Line ships feature at least two main dining rooms, and sometimes even three. Names vary by ship — although the six Breakaway Class and Breakaway Plus Class ships all feature the Manhattan Room, plus Savor and Taste, and Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva have the Commodore Room and Hudson's. Menus change daily throughout the cruise and feature a selection of American and international dishes.

Moderno Churrascaria

Carnivores can devour their fill of a variety of meats the traditional Brazilian way as gauchos carve and serve cuts of beef, lamb, pork, sausage and chicken right at the table. Those who prefer to limit their meat intake can fill up instead at the salad bar, which features 43 items. White rice, black beans, sauteed mushrooms, garlic mashed potatoes, fried yucca and Brazilian cheese bread are also served as side dishes.

Nama Sushi & Sashimi

Another new restaurant to debut on Norwegian Prima, Nama Sushi & Sashimi doesn't veer too far from its name, serving six different sushi rolls (from yellowtail to rock shrimp), three sashimi options and a variety of appetizers, most of which feature raw fish. Even the dessert — pineapple carpaccio — is uncooked.

Ocean Blue is an elegant seafood restaurant featured on NCL's six Breakaway Class and Breakaway Plus Class ships. (It's known as Bayamo by Ocean Blue on Norwegian Escape.) Guests can savor appetizers such as crabcakes, pan-seared scallops and an ahi tuna and avocado tower, followed by steamed or grilled lobster, seafood linguini or simply grilled fish (salmon, tuna, cod or sea bass) served with a choice of sauces. All Ocean Blue restaurants are located on Deck 8 and feature indoor and outdoor seating on The Waterfront.

Onda by Scarpetta

Modern Italian cuisine is the centerpiece of Onda by Scarpetta, another of NCL's elevated specialty dining options and the sister restaurant to land-based Scarpetta. Introduced in 2019 on Norwegian Encore and more recently rolled out on the line's newest ships (plus at least one older vessel), Onda by Scarpetta indulges with antipasti starters such as burrata, short ribs and braised octopus, a half dozen pasta options (including pappardelle Bolognese and Scarpetta's famous spaghetti with tomato and basil) and finally gets around to secondis such as veal Milanese and grilled branzino. The main question will be: Do you have room for dessert?

O'Sheehan's Bar & Grill

Included; 24-hour dining

This lively and social pub-style eatery overlooks the buzzing three-deck Atrium on Breakaway Class ships and is also featured on seven older NCL ships. It's open 24 hours a day and serves comfort classics such as burgers, fish and chips, chicken wings, beef chili and loaded nachos.

One of NCL's newest dining venues, Palomar celebrates the Mediterranean with a menu featuring lots of Greek influences. Seafood dishes outnumber meat options and include tuna crudo, grilled prawns, Mediterranean sea bass with chickpeas and saffron puree, and sea scallops with prosciutto, le puy lentils, clams and pistachio pesto. Desserts include Greek yogurt sorbet with orange custard pie.

Pincho Tapas Bar

This unique Spanish-style tapas bar is found on only one ship in the Breakaway Class and fits in with the ship's overall Miami/Latin-influenced theme. Head to Pinchos if you're looking to enjoy small-plate dishes such as blue crab salad and bacon-wrapped dates, as well as chorizo, calamari, shrimp, scallops and more served a la plancha. Wash it all down with a Spanish red, a glass of sangria or a signature Matador cocktail.

Three Norwegian ships feature a pool grill (all with different names) that's open for lunch and late afternoon snacks. The venue serves casual fare such as burgers, hot dogs and french fries.

Q Texas Smokehouse

This barbecue eatery debuted on Norwegian Bliss in 2018, and its menu features smoked meats (pit classics like brisket, pulled pork and beef short ribs), as well as calorific sides (loaded fries, crispy fried okra, onion rings and macaroni and cheese). You can also enjoy live country music and even sweat off the excess calories by dancing (before ordering pecan pie or peach cobbler for dessert). A more limited menu is available for free as part of Indulge Food Hall on Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva — but you'll need to dance elsewhere.

Savor (and Taste)

These two restaurants on all six Breakaway Class and Breakaway Plus Class ships are essentially smaller-scale main dining rooms. They are located across from each other on Deck 6 and feature lunch and dinner menus that change daily.

Shanghai's Noodle Bar

This casual dining venue serves a selection of freshly prepared and wok-fried Asian noodle and rice dishes, from pork pot stickers and steamed vegetable dumplings to Singapore-style rice noodles and udon noodles in broth.

Included; casual pub fare

While most NCL ships, with the exception of Pride of America, have a pub-style complimentary eatery — either O'Sheehan's Bar & Grill or The Local Bar & Grill — one older outlier has Sports Bar. Like the other eateries, this venue is free and features comfort classics such as Reuben sandwiches, chicken wings and fish and chips.

A la carte; coffee, breakfast and snacks

NCL wasn't the first cruise line to feature the well-known coffee chain (that would be Royal Caribbean), but it now has the most Starbucks cafes on board its ships. Guests can purchase frappuccinos, lattes, cold brews and many of the other coffee, tea and breakfast and pastry items that are available on land.

Surfside Cafe & Grill

With the debut of Norwegian Prima, NCL evolved its buffet-style restaurant (known as Garden Cafe on most ships) to Surfside Cafe & Grill. The Deck 17 space is notably smaller, though, due to the fact that Prima Class ships also feature Indulge Food Hall and The Local Bar & Grill as complimentary casual dining options. The reduced size does result in some overcrowding, especially at breakfast, with overflow guests directed to find seats in the adjacent Food Republic space.

All but three NCL ships feature Teppanyaki , a Benihana-style Japanese restaurant where the live-action preparation is integral to the experience. You'll be seated around a grill as your chef prepares your entree (either chicken, beef, seafood or teriyaki-glazed tofu or one of four combinations) with dramatic flair. You'll start with miso soup and seaweed salad, and all entrees are served with garlic fried rice and grilled vegetables. Dessert is either a green tea cake or fruit sashimi. Hasuki replaces Teppanyaki on Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva.

The Bake Shop

A sugar rush is practically guaranteed at The Bake Shop, a Deck 8 confectionery selling assorted bonbons (with fillings from passion fruit to praline), cupcakes (more than a dozen options, including red velvet, chocolate-pistachio and lemon merengue) and French macarons in a dozen flavors.

The Great Outdoors

This outdoor casual buffet on seven Norwegian Cruise Line ships has a come-as-you-are dress code and serves burgers, hot dogs, fries and other items for guests who want to enjoy some ocean scenery with their lunch.

The Haven Restaurant

Included for guests booked in The Haven; breakfast, lunch and dinner

If you book a suite in The Haven, the exclusive ship-within-a-ship enclave found on every new NCL ship since it was introduced on Norwegian Epic in 2010, you'll enjoy access to The Haven Restaurant. Open only to Haven guests, it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Menus here do not change, but there are generally enough options (a dozen appetizers and 10 entrees at dinner, for example) that you can dine here multiple times without repeating a dish or running out of interesting dishes to try.

The Local Bar & Grill

The Local Bar & Grill is a favored hangout for sports telecasts and trivia contests, as well as a go-to for guests when anytime-hunger strikes. Like its comfort food sibling O'Sheehans's Bar & Grill, its 24-hour menu features breakfast, all-day and late-night items that include omelets, cheeseburgers, chicken wings, fish and chips and loaded nachos.

The Raw Bar

Located adjacent to Ocean Blue, this casual option with counter seating serves oysters, clams, shellfish and crudos (salmon tartare, black sea bass ceviche and more), as well as wines by the glass and a selection of desserts.

Topsiders Bar & Grill

Five older NCL ships feature Topsiders Bar & Grill, a poolside venue serving burgers, hot dogs, french fries and other takeaway items.

Wasabi (or Sushi)

This contemporary sushi bar — called either Wasabi or Sushi, depending on the ship — is the spot for cocktails, sake and Japanese specialties that include sesame seaweed salad, sushi and specialty rolls, nigiri, sashimi and yakitori. On Prima Class ships, you'll find Nama Sushi & Sashimi with a different menu.

FAQs about NCL dining

Is norwegian cruise line's food free.

You can dine for free during your cruise at any of the complimentary dining venues on board NCL ships. There are typically four to six included dining venues per ship, several of which serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Is there a main dining room?

Yes, all NCL ships feature a main dining room — some have as many as three — and Freestyle Dining means you can choose when to dine (within the specified breakfast, lunch and dinner hours).

Do I need to make reservations?

You do not need to make reservations for the main dining rooms or casual venues like O'Sheehan's or the buffet. However, you can make reservations for the main dining rooms if you'd prefer to eat at a specific time and wish to avoid long wait times during the most popular dinner hours.

Sit-down specialty restaurants always require a reservation. The sooner you can make one, the better. You can book specialty dining online via the cruise line's website or app or by calling Norwegian reservations. You can also reserve when you get on board, but you risk that the more popular eateries will already be fully booked, especially during the peak summer and holiday periods. Walk-ins are permitted if space is available, but you'll likely need to show up early or late to snag a table.

Does Norwegian offer room service?

Yes, NCL offers 24-hour room service, but you will be charged a convenience fee of up to $9.95 per delivery, with the exception of morning coffee, continental breakfast and orders placed by guests staying in The Haven. A 20% gratuity and beverage service charge will also be added for noncomplimentary beverages and special occasion items delivered to your room.

How much does specialty dining cost?

It varies by restaurant. At venues with a la carte pricing, such as Cagney's, Ocean Blue, Onda by Scarpetta and Le Bistro, it's easy to rack up a bill of $80 per person, not including beverages. NCL's sushi restaurants are also a la carte, as is Food Republic. Two people with an average appetite can dine at both for around $50 to $60 per person, not including beverages. Other venues, such as Teppanyaki and Moderno Churrascaria, feature a set cover charge of $59 per person.

Does NCL offer specialty dining packages?

Yes and if you like a variety of cuisines and plan to dine at two or more extra-charge restaurants, purchasing a specialty dining package makes sense.

These range in price from $99 per person for a two-meal package to $469 per person for a 14-meal package. The price per meal gets lower the more meals you purchase — from $49.50 per dinner on a two-meal package to $33.50 per dinner for 14 meals. Even the four-meal package at $169 per person is a good deal at $42.25 per dinner, given the a la carte pricing greatly exceeds that (for three courses) at most specialty restaurants and eateries with cover charges are priced at $59 per person.

Also, a select number of specialty dining meals are typically included with NCL's Free at Sea booking promotion .

What about service charges?

A 20% gratuity and specialty service charge will automatically be added to the cost of your specialty dining package when you purchase it or to your onboard dining charge if you pay a la carte or a flat cover charge.

Fine dining, world class spas and cocktails on tap – there’s no doubt that cruising is an indulgent and glamorous way to travel, with many modern vessels compared to floating hotels. But some cruise ships take seafaring in style to the next level.

Owner's Suite, Viking Saturn, Viking

Built in 2023, the award-winning Viking Saturn is small in cruise ship standards, accommodating just 930 guests. Its clever layout means each stateroom gets its own veranda, and there's plenty to keep even the most active cruiser occupied. Guests can enjoy the many restaurants, as well as a jazz lounge and the Wintergarden, where you can take afternoon tea while listening to live classical music. There's also a theater, two cinemas, a sports deck and a pool with a retractable roof, so you can take a dip in any weather. Or you can relax in the Nordic Spa's sauna and steam room. Intriguingly, it also has a Snow Grotto – a 'sanctuary' of fluffy snow and chilled air. 

For particularly discerning travelers, the Owner's Suite is the largest, most well-appointed stateroom on board – and it comes with some pleasing perks. The 1,448-square-foot (134sqm) multi-room suite has an elegant living room with a private curated wine collection, as well as a boardroom that seats 12 people – perfect for hosting a private, catered dinner party. Owner's Suite guests also get a complimentary shore excursion with their own private car and driver.

However, we think the standout perk has to be this private ocean-view dry sauna, which is accessed from your own personal veranda. In 2024, Saturn will be calling at ports all over Europe, as well as taking in Iceland's majestic landscapes and sailing the trade routes of the Middle Ages. Saturn's newest route sails from Barcelona to Mumbai, stopping for 20 tours across 12 countries in 35 days. Prices for the Owner's Suite start from around $18.8k per person for the shorter eight-day itineraries. 

Iconic Suite, Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Cruises

The first in a series of five Edge vessels, Celebrity Edge maximises sea views with an innovative outward-facing design. Launched in 2018, it carries up to 2,918 passengers and is built for entertainment. The glamorous Grand Plaza is home to cafes and a Martini bar, while the Eden space offers a spiralling three-deck lounge and bar area, wrapped in glass. Elsewhere, there's a club, casino, pool and rooftop garden. One innovative feature is the Magic Carpet – a floating moveable deck with an open-air lounge and bar, designed to turn the experience of boarding a small boat to visit port into a pleasure.

The largest suite on board is the Iconic Suite. Designed by Kelly Hoppen, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom space covers 2,581-square-feet (239sqm) and enjoys panoramic views from above the captain's bridge. Decked out with clean lines and soothing neutral tones, the rooms are relaxed and comfortable with an underlying feeling of opulence. The largest suite in the Celebrity fleet, the Iconic has a huge private terrace with its own hot tub, double day bed and plenty of seating.

The Iconic Suite is part of The Retreat, an exclusive area of the ship accessible to suite guests. It's home to a sundeck, restaurant and lounge where your butler, along with a team of attendants and concierges, will cater to your every whim. In 2024, Celebrity Edge will visit Hawaii, Alaska, Tahiti and New Zealand and also take in Australia's wine country. A stay in an Iconic Suite on a 13-night cruise around New Zealand costs from around $28.3k per person.

Tower Suite, Disney Wish, Disney Cruise Line

Disney Wish took to the seas in 2022 as the fifth member of the Disney Cruise Line fleet. Able to accommodate 4,000 passengers, Wish offers everything you might hope for from a Disney-themed ship. Kids are well catered for with a Frozen -themed theatrical dining experience and immersive shows, as well as deck parties and water slides, while grown-ups can enjoy a Norwegian-style pub and Quiet Cove, an adults-only refuge with infinity pool, bar and lounge. 

Perched in the funnel of the ship, high above the upper decks, the Tower Suite is accessed by its own private elevator. Inside, the two-story living room features a chandelier, floor-to-ceiling glass windows and decor subtly inspired by the Disney movie Moana . A grand spiral staircase connects the palatial living area, which includes a dining salon and wet bar, to the suite's four bedrooms. Added perks include a concierge who handles your priority reservations, and access to a VIP lounge and sun deck.

The 1,966-square-foot (182sqm) suite has two main bedrooms, one children's room and a library that can double up as a bedroom if needed – each one has its own bathroom. Disney Wish runs multiple three- and four-night cruises around the Bahamas in 2024. Prices for the Tower Suite costs from around $13.6k per adult and $3.3k per child for a three-night sailing, before taxes and other charges.

Owner's Suite, Ilma, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

With five restaurants, six bars and a wine vault, Ritz-Carlton's Ilma superyacht packs a lot of luxe amenities for a yacht that carries a maximum of just 448 guests. Relaxed and refined, life on board Ilma includes visits to a Ritz-Carlton spa, infinity pool and a marina, giving direct access to the sea for swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding. Classical and jazz musicians serenade guests in venues across the yacht, while renowned experts lend educational insights along the way. 

The Owner's Suite is spread across 1,033 square feet (96sqm) and channels a casual elegance that will make 5-star travelers feel right at home. Outside, guests can relax in a whirlpool and cool off in an outdoor shower on their private 721-square-foot (67sqm) terrace. The personal concierge service ensures shore excursions go without a hitch – they can even organize bespoke private jaunts, from a tailored afternoon exploration to a multi-day stay. 

The Owner's Suite bedroom features a custom king bed and a bathroom with a modern soaking tub to ease muscles after a day of watersports. Ilma will make her maiden voyage in September 2024, making her way from Monte Carlo to Rome on a seven-night adventure that takes in Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Livorno, Corsica and Sardinia. If you fancy jumping aboard, prices for the trip start from $55k per person for the Owner's Suite.

Grand Suite, SS Bon Voyage, Uniworld River Cruises

Known for its boutique river cruises, Uniworld immerses guests in French elegance as soon as they step aboard the impossibly chic SS Bon Voyage. Fitted out in gleaming brass and polished wood, Le Salon Champagne bar is inspired by Yves Saint Laurent's former villa in Marrakech, Morocco while La Brasserie is imbued with Parisian cafe style. The sun deck has a beautifully tiled infinity pool and a cafe that hosts open-air cooking demos.

The luxurious 280-square-foot (26sqm) Grand Suite is bijou but beautifully decorated in a characterful style that typifies this unique ship. Perks include an in-suite butler service, packing and unpacking assistance, in-room breakfast, a daily fruit and cookie plate, an evening snack and even a shoe shine. A French balcony allows guests to experience the river views without having to leave the luxury of their suite.

A hand-crafted bed and a marble bathroom with rain shower and tub tops off the Grand Suite's amenities. If you fancy spending eight days experiencing all the history – and wine – the Garonne, Dordogne and Gironde rivers have to offer, prices start from around $12.5k per person for the Grand Suite, which includes flights from London to the embarkation point in Bordeaux, France.

The Haven 3-Bedroom Garden Villa, Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Jewel can carry up to 2,376 guests and offers some of the largest suites available at sea. With 11 different dining options to try, as well as eight bars (including a sake bar), live music, Le Cirque Bijou circus show, an art gallery, spa, card room and tennis court, Jewel passengers have no problem keeping boredom at bay between ports.

At up to 6,694 square feet (621sqm) the Haven 3-Bedroom Garden Villa is the most spacious stateroom to make our list. It's available on six of Norwegian's ships, including Jewel, and sleeps up to eight people. The living room features a grand piano and a dining area, while a stay in any of the ship's Haven staterooms come with 24-hour butler service and access to an exclusive pool, sun deck and hot tub, as well as an invitation to a cocktail party with the ship's officers. 

The Haven Three Bedroom Garden Villa also comes with its own garden deck and hot tub. Jewel is making multiple journeys around the Caribbean, Alaska, Panama Canal, Japan and the Pacific Coast wine country in 2024. The Three Bedroom Villa books up quickly, but for an 11-night cruise from Florida to Curacao, Aruba and the Dominican Republic it costs from around $44k per person.

Owner’s Suite, Oceania Vista, Oceania Cruises

Built in 2023, Oceania Vista can carry 1,200 passengers across 15 decks. As well as providing a spa, running deck, pool and fitness center, Vista prides itself on offering activities that exercise passengers' brains as well as their bodies. Guests can learn to cook everything from classic French cuisine to New World wonders in the state-of-the-art cookery school, receive expert guidance from resident artists in the Artist Loft or cozy up with a novel in the library. They can even attend talks given by a historian, naturalist or former ambassador.

The nautical-themed Owner's Suite is Vista's finest and largest stateroom, at between 2,200 and 2,400-square-feet (204-223sqm). The space includes an office, a lounge area (with cashmere lap blankets, of course), a dining room and a bedroom with its very own fully-fitted dressing room. The suite even has a full-sized stocked bar, where your 24-hour butler can whip you up a cocktail or two. If you're lucky enough to bag yourself one of these premium staterooms, you'll also gain unlimited access to the Aquamar Spa Terrace. 

This elegant dining area opens out onto not one but two spacious teak verandas, but you'll also get wonderful ocean views from the-floor-to ceiling windows in your bar, dining room and bedroom. In 2024, Vista will be exploring the Greek islands and the Caribbean, among others, with trips to Scandinavia, the Baltics and the Northern Fjords following in 2025. A stay in the Owner's Suite for a seven-night cruise of Greece and Turkey will cost around $13.4k per person. 

Regent Suite, Seven Seas Grandeur, Seven Seas Cruises

A relatively small ship, Grandeur is the latest in the Seven Seas fleet and carries 744 guests. Inspired by the glory days of cruising, Grandeur's interior is full of shining brass, lustrous glass and Art Deco touches. Amenities include a jogging track, the Serene Spa, a New York steakhouse, a glamorous French restaurant and an Art Nouveau-styled observation lounge and bar. There are also four theatrical experiences to enjoy, featuring Grammy-winning musical talent.

All suites on board Seven Seas Grandeur have their own private balcony, but the Regent Suite takes luxury to a whole new level. Spread over a huge 3,143 square feet (292sqm), the suite contains a large living area, as well as a spa-style bathroom with its own sauna, steam room and jetted tub. The 1,291-square-foot (120sqm) balcony is among the largest at sea and has its own custom-made mini pool.

The two spacious bedrooms have three walk-in closets between them and the included perks are next-level – a personal butler, business or first class flights, a pre-cruise hotel, a car and guide to explore ashore, in-suite spa services and daily canapes. In 2024, Seven Seas Grandeur will explore Greece, Spain, Italy, Canada, Mexico and the US. For Regent Suite guests, a seven-night voyage to and from Miami, taking in Honduras, Belize and Mexico, starts from around $47,200 per person.

Royal Loft Suite, Anthem of the Seas, Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas isn't just award-winning; it also holds the Guinness World Record for the tallest observation deck on a cruise ship. Kids and adults alike can marvel at the vertiginous view from the observation capsule, which stands at 300 feet (90m). There's also a host of activities and amenities to keep the whole family entertained, including a skydiving simulator, bumper cars, a cabaret and even a musical. After working up an appetite, there are 15 eateries and numerous bars and lounges to cater for all palettes. 

Accessed through a custom marble entryway, the Royal Loft Suite is the largest suite on board. Spread over two stories, the space includes a living room, dining area and grand piano. Outside, the enormous wrap-around veranda has a hot tub, sun loungers, dining table and a bar with views of the sports court. 

Guests who sail in the Royal Loft Suite receive perks such as a 'Royal Genie,' who creates a bespoke vacation for each passenger. Anthem of the Seas sails all over the globe and will visit Singapore, Thailand, the Bahamas, Egypt and the Norwegian Fjords – among other destinations – in 2024. A three-night trip sailing to and from Singapore staying in the Royal Loft Suite will set you back from around $5.2k per person.

Grand Suite, Queen Anne, Cunard

Launching in May 2024, Queen Anne is the newest cruise liner in the Cunard fleet and the 249th ship to sail under its historic flag. On board, life centers around the three-story grand lobby, a show-stopping space celebrating 182 years of Cunard. For the ship's 2,996 guests, entertainment can be found in the casino, library, art gallery and 825-seat theater, while the Queens Room hosts everything from afternoon tea and classical recitals to ballroom dancing. As if that's not enough, there's also a spa, wellness center and The Pavilion – a space with a retractable glass dome roof where passengers can enjoy open-air theater, cinema screenings and live music.

The Grand Suite is designed to feel like your own private residence at sea. Inside, a reception hall leads to a spacious Great Room with floor-to-ceiling windows, which is perfect for entertaining, or guests can relax in their lounge or on the deck of their private balcony. Perks include a reserved table at the Queens Grill, as well as exclusive access to the Grills Lounge and outside Grills Terrace – not to mention a dedicated concierge, butler and steward at your beck and call.

At night, guests should be able to sleep easy in their king-size bed, having picked out the perfect pillow from the pillow concierge menu. Other nice touches include fresh flowers, binoculars and a world atlas to track your travels. In her very first year at sea, Queen Anne will visit the Canary Islands, Iceland, the British Isles, Scandinavia and the Mediterranean, among other destinations. The Grand Suite is booked up for 2024, so watch out for Queen Anne's 2025 itinerary and expect to pay a premium for her most luxurious accommodation.

I'm a cruise musician on an adults-only ship. I make $4,000 each month and get to travel the world — but there are drawbacks too.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with English musician Jack Nolan, 32, about his experiences living and working on cruise ships over the last seven years. Nolan runs a TikTok account detailing his life on the high seas. The following has been edited for length and clarity. 

I'm currently on the Valiant Lady, which is a Virgin Voyages ship. We're sailing around the Mediterranean for the summer.

Almost every day you wake up in a new place. It's amazing to have the opportunity to travel and get paid for it, as well. I don't think there are many jobs where you can meet so many people from all over the world. And we're all here to do the same thing, which is enjoy the perks of working on a cruise.

My passion for music led me to a life at sea

I grew up loving music. Ever since I was a kid, I was always into rock music and bands. My dad put a guitar in my hands when I was about 9 years old and taught me songs he knew from his favorite bands.

I went to university to study music and I met a bunch of musicians. From there, I joined bands. I was playing in wedding bands and original bands.

Then I met a drummer who was a bit older than me and had already been on the ships. He was starting his own cruise ship band and he asked me if I wanted to play guitar. 

Cruises don't directly hire the bands, they go through an agent. So, we just needed an initial in. Our drummer already knew the process of how to get a cruise ship gig , so he led the way. He knew that, as a brand new band, we needed to film some content to use to apply to the right agents.

We would rehearse and record as much of the rehearsal as possible. We even put on a gig ourselves and funded it just so we could record a crowd clapping between some of the songs.

It took a good four or five months of waiting. But luckily, it worked. It got us a gig on Celebrity Cruises. We were on Celebrity cruises from 2016 all the way until the start of 2022. After that, me and the keyboard player joined Virgin in May 2022.

I currently play guitar in a band on an adults-only ship

The bread and butter of our performances is playing as a five-piece band: guitar, drums, bass guitar, keyboards, and lead singer. 

We have a large rep of songs and genres that we play, a real mix of mid-tempo songs and upbeat tunes. We play everything from Elvis to Etta James to Bruno Mars to Daft Punk. 

We play two or three hours a day. They have us break into acoustic trios and duos and sometimes I do solo guitar sets. It's not strenuous at all. We have one day off each week, as well. 

It depends on if I've played late the night before, but sometimes I'll actually wake up around noon because we've played until almost 2 a.m.

If we're in port, I'll go out and explore. If it's a sea day, I'll hit up the gym. There's honestly so much free time, especially on this ship. It's quite incredible. 

We're playing usually from 5 or 6 p.m. throughout the evening. It's a very cool lifestyle.

There's no kids on board. It's amazing. The people on here are in good spirits because there's no stress. People are just adults having fun.

They give us the freedom as performers to interact with the guests. They encourage us to go get drinks with them, to sit and chat with them, interact, and help them feel more immersed within the crew.

We were making $3,000 a month on Celebrity. At the time, we thought that was great. But then we heard about Virgin. They were a new company and they were offering more money for musicians, so we were quick to jump ship.

As musicians, we're now making $4,000 a month.

Your rent, your board, your food onboard — it's all covered by the company. You save money so easily.

Being British and working for American cruise lines, we're paid in dollars and we're not taxed on those because we're not from the US and we're also living on a ship.

There's a thing called Seafarers' earning deduction . If you're from the UK and you're not living in the UK for more than half the year, then you don't need to pay income tax, as well. 

That's a really sweet part of being a full-time cruise ship musician, to save so much money. 

My favorite parts are traveling and meeting new people

I always get off the ship whenever we're in port, just for sanity. If you spend too much time on board, it kind of messes with your head.

We're one of the positions on board that is lucky enough to have so much downtime, so we can get off the ship usually whenever we want. 

Kangaroos in Australia; snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef; bungee jumping in New Zealand; sailing through the Norwegian fjords; taking quad bikes around Greece — it's been amazing to have the opportunity to travel to all these places and get paid for it, as well.

The downside is you only get a few hours to explore. You get to go to these amazing places, but you don't really get to immerse yourself in them.

But usually, these cruises are week-long and they repeat. So you can go back the next week to the same spots and find your local coffee spots, Wi-Fi spots, beaches, hangouts. 

And you learn so much when you're meeting people from all over the world, the different cultures they have, the experiences. I think that's my number one favorite thing. I've made friends for life.

But life at sea isn't always luxurious

Living in a small, windowless cabin can suck. It can be nice at times. It can feel cozy and you can nap at any time of the day because you haven't got daylight.

But if you miss daylight too much, it's not great.

Keeping up a long-distance relationship is extremely tough, too. I have a girlfriend and she's in LA. 

Luckily, the Wi-Fi on Virgin is free, so we get to FaceTime every night. But it does cut out at times, which is frustrating. The internet is often slow. 

My plan is to head over to California after this contract. I want to move on and keep my relationship healthy.  

There's no job quite like this one
