DOWNTON ABBEY WALKING TOURS IN LONDON

Though most Downton Abbey Tours take you out of London and into the countryside where the show is filmed, there is one company offering a walking tour of the city.

Brit Movie Tours visit all the major sites where the TV series was filmed during its stint in London.

Compared to other Downton Abbey tours, this is a steal, so definitely check it out if you're a big fan of the show, but don't have the time or funds to take a day trip.

Also, as you'll probably notice, most Downton Abbey Tours to Highclere Castle or Blenheim Palace are sold out months in advance so this tour is a great alternative if you can't get tickets for the day trip tours.

Brit Movie Tours - Downton Abbey Tour of London

If you want to reenact a bit of Downton Abbey during your trip to London, then you should consider taking a walking tour with Brit Movie Tours !

Though this tour won't take you to Highclere Castle or Blenheim Palace, you will get to walk in the footsteps of your favorite characters as they moved through London.

Some of the well-known places that are visited include the hotel where Lady Mary and Lord Gillingham have their secret liaison, the spot where Branson first confesses his love to Lady Sybil, and many others.

The tour is approximately 2.5 hours and starts from Temple Station.

  • When: Fridays at 11:00 am from April - September
  • Cost:  Adults (16 years+) - £15, Children (5 – 15 years) -  £10

DOWNTON ABBEY TOURS TO HIGHCLERE CASTLE AND BLENHEIM PALACE

Tickets to Highclere Castle and Blenheim Palace are some of the most difficult to come by of all the popular tourist attractions in the UK.

Even if traveling with an organized tour group, you usually have to reserve your tickets about a year in advance!

However, one of the main benefits of going with a tour group is easy transportation to and from London.

Each of the following tours includes round-trip transportation, as well as entrance to either Highclere or Blenheim.

International Friends

International Friends has 2 tours that bring guests out of London and to various Downton Abbey sites in the countryside.

The first is their Downton Abbey Filming Locations & Highclere Castle Day Tour, and the second is their Downton Abbey Filming Locations & Blenheim Palace Day Tour.

Both are full-day tours and include transportation to and from London.

With the tour to Highclere, you will also visit Downton village and Downton Church.

Otherwise, you can opt for the Blenheim Tour, which takes you to the picturesque Oxfordshire Cotswolds and the village of Burford as well.

The price of admission is included in both tours.

  • From £155 per adult
  • Limited availability

Brit Movie Tours

In addition to their Downton Abbey Walking Tour in London, Brit Movie Tours also offers several different day trips from London including Downton Abbey and Village Tour, Downton Abbey Town and Country Filming Locations Tour, and a Downton Abbey 2 Day Tour.

The first is a very popular option as it visits the famous Highclere Castle, as well as the Downton Village.

The Downton Abbey Town and Country Tour also brings you to the village but visits the Cotswolds instead of Highclere.

The 2-Day Tour is for true Downton Abbey fans as it takes you all over the English countryside to visit several different places featured in the show.

Downton Abbey Tour Reviews

1. small group tour: downton abbey and village tour of locations from london.

Small Group Tour: Downton Abbey and Village Tour of Locations from London

  • Duration: 9 hours
  • Departure:  Gloucester Rd, South Kensington , London SW7 4SF
  • Departure Time: 9:00 am
  • Includes:  Local guide, live commentary on board, entry to Highclere Castle, transport by Mini Coach

This is yet another we absolutely loved, and draws many similarities to the previous tour. The Small Group Tour: Downton Abbey and Village Tour of Locations from London will have you taking the footsteps of Lady Mary Crawley on this full-day tour.

Covering many important locations, you’ll not only hear historical accounts but anecdotes about filming and the series. We would’ve liked that this tour included a hotel pickup, but you’ll instead be meeting your guide at the Gloucester Road tube station.

Your guide will wait for you at the station exit right outside Flowers Inc. at 9:00 am so you have the full day to explore. You’ll be transported by a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle with a separate guide and driver rather than a 2-in-1.

The journey to Oxfordshire is quite beautiful, and your guide offers interesting commentary along the way to make it more entertaining. If you’ve ever wanted to explore more of the English countryside, this is a great way to see charming little villages and rolling hills.

Before you know it, you and your group will be arriving in the wonderful Cotswolds village which served as “Downton”. Just like with the others, you’ll have time to explore the former home of Matthew Crawley, Downton Cottage Hospital, and various other buildings.

Along the way, your guide will share anecdotes about filming and the actors along with genuine historical information about these spots. You won’t be able to get this experience anywhere else!

Take advantage of the free time you’ll have here before heading over to Highclere Castle, which itself boasts an over 1000-year history! Your guide will fill you in on some of the most important events that have taken place here during that time.

Serving as the Crawley’s family home in the series, you’ll also get to see inside and outside to take some photos. The above-stairs and below-stairs rooms are quite the contrast, and you’ll learn all about them through a self-guided pamphlet.

At this time, you can choose to grab a coffee at the castle or a light lunch. The grounds are stunning and perfect for enjoying your lunch on.

Start out by meeting your guide at Gloucester Road Underground Station, and they’ll be waiting next to the station exit. You’ll then hop onto a comfortable, air-conditioned coach and head straight towards the charming village of Bampton, located in Oxfordshire.

As you journey there, your guide will offer an educational commentary and give a briefing as to what you can expect. Once you get to Bampton, you’ll hop out and start your guided walking tour around the village marked by iconic spots seen in the series.

Bodleian Library in Oxford

We begin our Downton Abbey tour from London with a visit to Oxford. This historic city is famous for its world-class university that is one of the oldest in the world. The city has also featured as a filming location in the early Harry Potter movies, and many of the college buildings look like a real-life Hogwarts! Once upon a time, the University of Oxford was a place that was almost exclusively reserved for the upper classes and aristocracy. You can almost imagine families such as the Crawleys studying amongst the ancient walls of the university buildings, having arrived from magnificent homes such as Downton Abbey. Your guide will lead a guided tour through the historic city centre, and you will also have some free time to explore, or perhaps enjoy lunch in one of the local pubs or cafes.

Downton Abbey Tour from London

The church in Bampton

We continue our Downton Abbey tour with a visit to Bampton. This small village was used as the filming location of Downton in the TV series. Time has stood still in Bampton, and it really looks like nothing much has changed over the past 100 years. It’s precisely for this reason that the producers of Downton Abbey chose Bampton as the perfect filming location. You’ll get to see the village church, which is where Lady Mary married Matthew Crawley and baby Sibyls christening took place. Nearby lies the house which was used for exterior shots of Isobel Crawley’s house. And the old grammar school building served as the hospital in the TV series. As you walk around Bampton, you’ll get to reimagine some of the most iconic and beloved scenes from Downton Abbey.

Highclere Castle

Step outside to enjoy the spectacular castle grounds which were created by one of the leading English garden designers. Finish the visit with tea and cake in one of the tea rooms.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

Despite its popularity Highclere Castle has a limited visitor season. Some of the 2024 dates are live on this page but others are not released yet (see our table Downton Abbey/Highclere Castle tour dates 2024 for the available dates.).

Highclere Castle day tours from London are few and far between, normally opening dates are restricted between July and early September and national holidays at Easter and in May.

If you want to visit Highclere on a day tour from London it is not a matter of picking and choosing your tour, it's just grab the tour when available for your dates before it sells out!

If you are planning for 2024, then based on this year and previous years they are likely to be a spring opening around Easter, the two national holidays in May, and most days (except Fridays and Saturdays) from the second week of July through to early September. In addition, there are occasional special event days throughout the year. We update our page as and when dates are released and highlight these special events once we have details. We include the tour that does not visit Highclere for those visitors that are in the UK when Highclere is not open but want the best 'Downton' experience available.

It is not possible to view Highclere Castle when closed, even for a drop by photo opportunity. Highclere Castle is far from public roads out of view. There are local public footpaths where you can glimpse Highclere Castle from far off.

Highclere Castle by public transport

There is no public transport available to Highclere Castle. A bus service from Newbury runs 3 or 4 times a day except Sundays to the small village of Burghclere about a 30 minute walk from Highclere Castle, but timings are not good for a visit.

From London you can take trains to Newbury from Paddington Station from where it is about a 20 minute taxi ride to Highclere.

In the "hospital", which is the public library, there is also the Vesey room where the Bampton Archive is housed and various local exhibitions are set out. Here you can purchase some Downton mementos of your time in Bampton, such as beautiful cards, prints and mugs (done by a local artist) as well as books of the filming.

Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey)

To finish your day you will travel to Highclere, and discover an inspiring Highclere Castle set amidst lawns and gardens of tranquility and beauty. It has been home to the Carnarvon Family since 1679 and the present Earl and Countess still live here.

Long-standing friend of the Carnarvon family, Julian Fellowes had Highclere Castle in mind as he wrote Downton Abbey. He often commented he wanted a house which spectacularly testified to the confidence and soaring optimism of the Edwardian period.

Visitors follow a route through the castle though rooms with guides in each State room happy to share anecdotes and information.

As well as the castle, you will have time to explore the extensive grounds, designed by Lancelot “Capability” Brown who also designed the grounds of Blenheim Palace. Tea and cake can be taken at one of the tea rooms once you have finished.

A copy of Lady Carnarvon's autobiography will also be given to every customer on the tour. It makes for fascinating reading and is a unique souvenir to remember the day!

After a tea/coffee break in the delightfully refurbished rustic cow shed cafe at Cogges, we take a tour and learn of the relationship between the tenant farmers and landowners, showing the sites used in filming.

After the tour we drive to Downton Village, real name Bampton, a beautiful village in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds. The village of Bampton has been used extensively in all series of Downton Abbey for Downton Village filming.

You will see Downton Cottage Hospital and doctor's surgery (in real life the library), St Mary’s Church (where many wedding and funeral scenes were shot), Churchgate House for exterior shots for the Crawley family home, and the street used for shops, the Post Office and the Grantham Arms.

Highclere Castle

In the early afternoon we make our way to the Grantham family home, Highclere Castle. On arrival at Highclere Castle there will be time to enjoy the beautiful gardens. There will be time for lunch, or a snack in the Tearooms before entering Highclere Castle for an afternoon visit.
