Travel to and around Kent with ease with a number of different options. 

Getting here

There is easy access from London and the Kent coast on the M2/A2 and M20 motorways, linking with the M25. There are direct links from the A2/M2 to Rochester/Chatham/Gillingham via the A289/Medway Tunnel. Regular coaches run from London Victoria to the area.

Kent is just over 40 miles from Gatwick Airport via the M23/M25/A2/M2. It’s 75 miles from Heathrow Airport, via the M25/A2/M2 and 52 miles from Stansted via the M11/M25/A2/M2.

The area has good links to the Channel ports and Eurotunnel . Kent is just 40 miles from Dover and Folkestone and can be reached via the A2/M2 and the M20/A229.

The region has five main rail stations: Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham and Rainham. All have frequent services from London Victoria and Charing Cross. High speed trains also link Kent to London’s St Pancras International in just 35 minutes. Rail travel from Europe to Kent is now faster and easier by Eurostar. Ebbsfleet International Station is 20 minutes away by coach.

Public transport

The area is well served by public transport. Once here you can easily move around using local train, bus and taxi services. Arriva Southern Counties provides a frequent 10-minute bus service daily between historic Rochester and Chatham Maritime. It also operates several other services throughout Kent and further afield from Chatham Waterfront Bus Station.

Getting around

Kent is very accessible by car, with two motorways running through the county. There are also hundreds of non-motorway connecting roads for travelling between towns and cities. Charming country lanes help to keep smaller, more remote villages connected, with many offering fantastic views across the Kent landscape. Enjoy a day out discovering Kent by bus with our modern, integrated and accessible bus network, allowing you to get around Kent in a comfortable and environmentally-friendly way. There are two bus companies running services in Kent, Arriva to the west and Stagecoach to the east.

Kent has a great rail network running through and around the county, making it the quickest mode of transport for visitors without a car. Kent’s network rail provider Southeastern runs services to and from more than 90 railway stations in Kent, including High Speed services from London St Pancras.

By bike and by foot

What better way is there to travel around the county than out in the fresh air? And you can experience Kent’s history and beauty at the same time. There are paths that take you past castles, ancient churches, historic houses as well as many splendid and celebrated gardens. With more than 4,200 miles of public rights of way across countryside and coastline, it’s ideal for travelling around the county by bike or foot.

A number of substantial roadworks on Kent’s major motorways will affect travel throughout the county this week. Works are scheduled for the M2, M20, M25, M26, A2 and A21 on days throughout the week.

Even a single closure can see travel times significantly increased. There is also a closure on a key road in Medway that is set to last for over 20 days to allow for the next phase of City Fibre works to be completed.

Monday, July 10

A2 Westbound - The road will be closed to the A282 northbound junction two link road for painting works with diversions via local authority roads. The closure will be in place from 10pm to 5.30am.

A2 Westbound - The A2 Westbound Dartford Heath carriageway will be closed between the exit and entry slip roads for maintenance works, with diversions via local authority roads. The closure will be in place from 10pm to 5am.

A21 Northbound - The northbound Vauxhall Lane to Morley’s Road roundabout will be closed for structural works. The closure will be in place from 8pm to 6am.

M20 Westbound - The junction two entry slip road will be closed for electrical works with diversions via the National Highways network. The closure will be in place from 10pm and 5am.

M25 Westbound - A closure will be in place westbound for Spur Road at junction four for resurfacing works with diversions via the National Highways network. The closure will be in place between 10pm and 5.30am.

M25 Clockwise - A closure will be in place between the M25 junction two roundabout to the A282 junction 1b link road. The closure will be in place between 10pm and 5.30am.

Tuesday, July 11

M20 Eastbound - A closure will be in place at the junction two exit slip road for electrical works with diversions via the National Highways network. The closure will be in place between 10pm and 5am.

Wednesday, July 12

M25 Clockwise - A closure will be in place at the M25 junction two roundabout to the A282 northbound junction 1b link road for structural works with a diversion the A2, Bean interchange, B255, A206 and Junction 1A.The closure will be in place between 10pm and 5.30am.

M26 Westbound - A closure will be in place at the junction two entry slip road for CAT 1 electrical works with a diversion via the A20 London Road to M25 Jct 3 roundabout. The closure will be in place between 10pm and 5.30am.

M26 Westbound - There will be a carriageway closure between junction 2a and the M25 clockwise at junction five. The closure will be in place between 10pm and 5.30am.

Thursday, July 13

M20 Westbound - A closure will be in place on the M20 Westbound between junction nine and junction seven for barrier works with a diversion via the A20 or M20/A20/A2/M2/A249. The closure will be in place between 9pm and 6am.

M20 Eastbound - The M20 eastbound will be closed between junctions seven and nine from 9pm to 6am.

Friday, July 14

A2 both directions - A closure will be in place on the carriageway between Whitfield roundabout to the A256, to allow for a new bridge to erected across the A2. The closure will be in place between 9pm and 6am

A2 Westbound - The road will be closed to the A282 northbound junction two link road for painting works with diversions via local authority roads. The closure will be in place from 11pm to 6am.
