Zen has a variety of functions, including purchasing races, ship classes, and costumes. It is not uncommon for 'free to play' games to sell equipment that gives buyers an edge over other players for real world cash in order to fund the game, and most 'pay to play' games have a system where players can buy aesthetic items, name changes, server transfers, and other equipment and services which don't directly affect game play. In some cases, Zen is the only way to access many ship classes, such as those found in the 10th Anniversary Legendary Starship Bundles or the Gamma Vanguard Pack .
- Previously, one could also gain Zen through the Arc platform by doing Arc Quests , where Arc points could be exchanged for Zen. This option was only available on PC, and is no longer available.

The Zen Store in game.
Many of the items in the Zen Store are available in discount bundles. For most of these bundles, buying one of the items individually will prevent you from buying that bundle in the future, and in a few cases, this can lock you out of some bundle-exclusive items. These cases are noted below. Always do your research and shop wisely.

The Zen Store can only be accessed in-game:
- Press the Menu Button
- Navigate down to Store > Zen Store
Items in the Zen Store can be filtered:
- Select the drop down arrow, located underneath the first Tab on the left.
- A Search Bar will appear, as well as a button to Reset the field to the right of the Search Bar.
- Underneath the Search Bar is a drop down menu which can be used to filter between "Purchased" and "Not Purchased" items.
Then, to purchase an item:
- Select one of the Tabs on the left hand side to see the appropriate available items.
- Click "Buy" to purchase the item; or "Claim" if it's a previously purchased or free item.
The On Sale tab lists all items currently at a discounted price. The New Items tab lists recent additions to the store.

In order to make a purchases using Steam, please be sure you are logged into the game via the Steam client. If you launch the game through Arc you will not be connected to Steam. Once you are in the game, access the cash shop and click the button to buy Zen. This will open the Steam overlay displaying the available purchase options.
Stick with buying Zen from Arc directly - get the 10% bonus on your purchase (extra 100 on 1000 purchase), I think it was an extra 300 on a 1000 purchase on their Valentines promo. Launch game through your steam, open your C store and bottom right, there is a button says "Buy Zen." Click it and you can see several options. If memory serves, 5 quid for 500 Zen which is a bit steep price, but still faster than grinding. The good news is, it seems to work well enough.

As far as technical problems go. Log out of Steam completely and try to relog in using the steam authenticator. If it doesn't work, try again later. Sometimes it has issues. restart steam and make sure your launching sto through it,if it still dont work then theres probably a problem somewhere.

If zero balance you are presented with a second actual buy screen where you pick one of the zen amounts to buy. Then enter your card information. When approved it goes to the wallet. Next you are returned back to the original buy from Steam Wallet screen purchase to approve it. Then its done in a few moments.

Yep, validated and downloaded 2 missing files, and restarted. And am starting STO through steam, which still brings up the STO launcher for me to login. Yes, that's perfectly normal.
