A special thank you to Yoko our National Escort, whose friendly, professional and organised approach to the holiday made sure everything ran smoothly and made the trip to Japan so memorable.

Our National Escort Takako Kaneko made the holiday. She was excellent, informative, hardworking and had obviously researched information for us.

Meet Michiyo O

I love sharing the culture of my country with visitors, that's why I become a tour guide! From noodles and sake to classical gardens and temples, learning about our culture is surely the best way to understand more about Japan as a whole.

Our National Escort Michiyo 'made' this holiday with her charm, knowledge, lots of interesting details and her send of humour.

"Japan is one of the most captivating places on earth, where you can go from Tokyo's flashy streets to the snowy peak of Mount Fuji or a traditional ryokan in a day."

Travel Director

Admire the snow-capped Mount Fuji

See the towering peak of Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan and a UNESCO-listed site. We’ll take you up to the 5th station of Mount Fuji, a spectacular vantage point at 7,545 feet, before taking a ride on the Kachikachiyama Ropeway with views of Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi.

Take a high-speed bullet train to Kyoto

Board the high-speed bullet train to Kyoto, the former capital of Japan and the ancient epicentre of Japanese culture. After whizzing through the country, you’ll meet the locals at a traditional ryokan and learn about traditional Japanese customs, then explore the Gion District and glittering Kinkakuji Temple, the symbol of Kyoto.

Experience a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony

We’ll introduce you to a professional Tea Master who has spent many years learning the craft of the tea ceremony. You’ll learn about the history of Japanese tea making, and watch how the matcha is prepared with a bamboo whisk. You’ll even have a go at making (and tasting) your own tea.

Admire Osaka from the Floating Garden Observatory

The Floating Garden Observatory is an open-air viewing platform, stretching between the two towers of the Umeda Sky Building. We’ll take you to the top of the 567-foot buildings for panoramic views over Osaka, including the city’s dazzling rivers, bridges and soaring skyscrapers.

Wander through Ameyoko Street Market

With nearly 200 shops selling everything from fresh fish and spices to clothing and bags, you can spend hours roaming through Ameyoko Street Market. Sensoji Buddhist Temple

One of the most famous temples in Japan, the Sensoji Buddhist Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo. It was originally built in 628 but was rebuilt after being destroyed in WWII. Today, you’ll find a beautiful five-storey pagoda, woven with incense and crimson eaves.

What to pack for Japan

People packing for a tour

Adaptor plug

In Japan, the standard voltage is 100 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A and B. The standard frequency is 50 / 60 Hz.

Comfortable sandals

Japanese culture requires you to take off your shoes when entering traditional restaurants, temples and ryokans. Bring a comfortable pair of sandals so you can easily slip them off all day.

Japanese phrasebook

Learning a few Japanese phrases will help you connect with the friendly Japanese locals, and offers the chance for some rewarding interactions.

Most shops and restaurants in Japan primarily accept cash, so it’s best to come prepared with some Japanese yen for your trip.

Versatile clothing

Japan’s weather ranges hot and humid to freezing cold, with mild springs in between. Pack versatile layers to be prepared for all conditions on your Japan holiday.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Culture and customs.

Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.

This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.

Visit ancient temples and walk history-laden pilgrim routes on our 8 day Koya-san & Kumano Trek.

History and government

Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history all influencing the country we all know and love today.

Ancient history

While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.

Pre-modern history

Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.

20th century

It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.

These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.

The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.

Reflect on the historic and sobering sites of Hiroshima and Nagasaki while on a 24 day Ultimate Japan tour.

After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. The late 20th century saw the country emerge as an economic superpower, and with that came the flourishing of several cultural sectors, such as the arts and cuisine.

Experience Japan's historic sites on a 13 day Land of the Rising Sun tour.

Top places to visit in Japan

One minute you’re walking through a former black-market quarter, the next you’re paying your respects at a 1400-year-old temple. Eclectic Tokyo is an essential part of any visit to Japan.

If you’ve ever eaten at a sushi train restaurant, you’ve got the underrated city of Osaka to thank! The motto in this city is 'kuidaore' which roughly translates as ‘eat until you drop’ . You can consider that a (friendly) order.

The home of temples, palaces and the Gion district (where geisha live and work), Kyoto is also where you’ll find the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine.

4. Kanazawa

A great place to see a slice of old Japan, with classic sculpted gardens, a restored Old Town and well-preserved architecture from a variety of eras.

5. Hiroshima

Most travellers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets.

6. Yudanaka

This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).

Geography and environment

Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.

Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.

Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.

Traverse mountains, cycle coastlines and meander through forests on a 12 day Japan: Hike, Bike and Kayak tour.

Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! In cities like Tokyo, there are loads of quirky stores and funky galleries showcasing the works of independent fashion designers and gadget creators. From the outlandish to the kitsch, you're guaranteed to find loads of colourful clothing and edgy art that you won't be able to find elsewhere.

If you’re planning to bring back leaf tea or any other perishable or edible items, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.

What to buy

  • Kimonos This quintessential Japanese souvenir looks great hung on the wall as an interesting decorative piece. If you plan on wearing one, make sure you do so respectfully and learn the correct way to fold the garment.

Paper lanterns, kites and fans Japanese paper goods make great, relatively inexpensive souvenirs. Choose from high-quality, traditionally-made kites or delicate rice paper lanterns.

Electronics Shops in Japan are bursting with the latest tech gadgets. Just be sure to check that they are compatible for use at home.

Fashion Have fun with the amazing diversity of popular street culture fashion available in Japan. Vibrant, brash and sometimes bizarre – find something that no one back at home will be wearing.

Anime and manga paraphernalia Another inexpensive gift option, even for people who can’t read Japanese. Pick up a book, magazine, t-shirt or print from one of Japan’s many anime and manga stores

Festivals and events

If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular festive events in Japan.

Sapporo Winter Festival

Held every February since 1950, this festival features hundreds of statues and ice sculptures, snow slides and mazes, regional food and artistic performances. Winter in Japan is truly amazing, and the Sapporo Winter Festival is a magical way to celebrate.

Hadaka Matsuri

Head to Okayama to watch thousands of men wearing nothing but loincloths vie to touch the chosen 'naked man'. It may look like a bizarre male-bonding exercise but it's actually a historic cleansing ritual dating back thousands of years. Dates change yearly.

Fuji Rock Festival

Held annually in the stunning surroundings of the Naeba Ski Resort, this outdoor music festival is huge and draws in big-name acts and local bands Thousands of music lovers flock to Naeba for three days of camping, music and partying in the summer months.

Is tipping customary in Japan?

Tipping isn't customary in Japan and is not expected – in fact, it will sometimes be considered impolite. Some inns or ryokans may leave a small envelope in your room where a small gratuity can be left for housekeeping staff.

What is the internet access like in Japan?

Internet access is excellent in Japan, with one of the most developed high-speed internet networks in the world. Internet cafes and wi-fi hotspots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my mobile while in Japan?

Mobile phone coverage is excellent in Japan but be aware that talking loudly on your phone in public places (like in train carriages) is frowned upon. You will be expected to hide your mouth behind your hand if you must take a call in public. If you want to use your mobile phone, ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive (but be aware of the fees this may incur).

What are the toilets like in Japan?

In Japan, toilets range from high-tech bidets to standard western-style flushable toilets to squat toilets, which are still common outside the city. Sometimes you may need to pay for toilet paper, which can usually be purchased from a vending machine nearby.

What will it cost for a...?

Japan's unit of currency is the yen:

  • Bento box = YEN 550
  • Bowl of ramen = YEN 650-1,200
  • Can of beer = YEN 250
  • Coffee = YEN 100-600
  • Convenience store snack = YEN 200-500

Can I drink the water in Japan?

Drinking water from taps in Japan is considered safe. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Major cities often have water fountains in train stations.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Japan?

Major credit cards are accepted by some stores; however, Japan is still very much a cash culture and as such, some places may not accept credit cards. Ensure you carry enough cash to cover purchases.

What is ATM access like in Japan?

ATMs are common in Japan but unfortunately many of them don't accept foreign-issued cards. However, you can access cash from non-Japanese bank accounts via the Cirrus and Maestro systems at all post office ATMs around the country, as well as ATMs at 7-Eleven convenience stores.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

March, April and May are excellent months to holiday in Japan and, as a result, are the busiest. The weather is usually fine and beautiful cherry blossoms are in full bloom. September, October and November are also great months to visit Japan on holidays, as the days are warm but not humid and the autumn colours are out. Winter, while cold, offers great conditions for skiing, snowboarding, going to snow festivals and admiring the stunning mountain scenery. The summer months can be quite humid, but tourist areas are generally quieter and there are many fun festivals and fireworks displays to enjoy.

What is the weather like in Japan?

  • Spring (March to May): temperatures range from 10 to 20°C, with conditions getting sunnier and clearer towards the end of the season.
  • Summer (June to August): temperatures range from 21 to 32°C depending on where you are. It’s warmer in the south than in the north. You can expect some rain in June, and it can get quite humid towards the end of the season.
  • Autumn (September to November): temperatures range from 7 to 20°C. The humidity starts to calm down in September, but days stay warm until October. Nights can be chilly.
  • Winter (December to February): break out the coats, temperatures during winter range from 0 to 15°C. The mountains and the north experience snowfall .

How safe is Japan?

Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travellers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!).

Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

LGBTQIA+ travellers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.

Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalised yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Is Japan accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The needs of travellers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted.  Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make travelling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.

It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.

Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.

Travellers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.

If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Japan?

Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.

Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots.

Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf.

The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.

Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay.

What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?

Having a basic understanding of the language and culture of the country you're visiting can go a long way when it comes to, not only communicating efficiently but your overall trip experience as well. Some common phrases you need to learn are:

  • 'hello' - Konnichiwa
  • 'good morning' - Ohayō
  • 'thank you' - Arigatou Gozaimasu
  • 'please' - Onegaishimasu

What religions do they practice in Japan?

There are two dominant religions in Japan - Shinto and Buddhism. The majority of Japanese people practice both simultaneously, however, there is a small number of the population that practise other religions such as Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, and Islam.

What our customers say

4.9 stars based on 539 REVIEWS

My son and I took a graduation trip to Japan before he left for college. We love to travel, but we were anxious about trying to navigate Japan's large cities without knowing the language and norms. AJT was AMAZING though the whole process. Breana answered my questions quickly and communicated frequently with helpful information. We did the Anime Flavor Tour and loved it. Yashima met us at the airport and helped us exchange money, pick up our WiFi hotspot, and even explained the bathrooms. (IYKYK) ?? We immediately felt so comfortable with her and welcome. Such a sweet heart and went above and beyond to allow my son to see and do what he hoped to do, even explaining the rail system and outlining our stops when we wanted to explore in our free time in the evenings. The next day, she handed us over to Yuki and connected us with our tour group. Yuki was fantastic. Knowledgeable, friendly, funny, and very patient with all of us and our many unique needs. She's very good at her job, and not one detail was missed. The other travelers in our group were awesome--we quickly became a team. The itinerary was smartly crafted and a great blend of pop culture and local culture. The bus was clean and offered free wifi. Meals were experiences on their own, including shabu shabu, sushi, bento, and a full course meal. The hotels were comfortable and offered many amenities. The people of Japan were very kind and welcoming, and we are grateful for this experience. What a country, and what a great tour!

The breakfasts at the hotel were very good because they labeled the food for allergies. Especially the Kyoto hotel They were the best! They also offered a good variety of all kinds of foods so I could easily be filled and energized! I liked all the extra education and information the tour guide provided, that is always so interesting and helpful. The least pleasant event was the trip to the Maiko, I was concerned for the freedom and wellbeing of someone so young making the kind of binding agreement she did and the distance from her family support.

Trip of a lifetime. Our tour guide was amazing and really ensured everyone learned , was engaged and accommodated a variety of requests. This tour created a lifetime of memories for me and my son as well as a deep appreciation for Japanese culture, cuisine and heritage. Highly recommend to anyone looking to travel to Japan. Everything was taken care of, all we had to do was come enjoy , walk and learn! the hotel choices were great, food provided was plentiful and the group was the right size for strangers to now be friends. The bus and accommodations were comfy and the driver a true professional. Thank you Billy for all you did for our group. We had a blast.

There were a few too many shrines and temples. The best part was learning about the culture and local customs. Our tour guide, Kim, was excellent and gave us insights into how the locals live as well as how society runs--things that tour brochures do not cover. If we were to return to Japan we would want to have Kim as a guide again as she was so pleasant, engaging and competent. The tour overall gets a rating of 4 but she gets a 5+.

Well worth the price. If i hadn't booked this tour, i wouldn't have been able to see half the attractions and probably would have had to pay more. Kim-san made sure we were able to see everything on the itinerary, even with crazy weather making us switch things around. Nakano-san was a very capable driver and helped everyone get on the right bus. I really couldn't even imagine trying to book everything on my own and all of the hotels were top notch (right at the center of everything). Very pleasant experience.

Tips for Traveling on Japanese Bullet Trains

CHARLY TRIBALLEAU/AFP via Getty Images

Japan is known for many things: ancient temples, towering skyscrapers, sushi, and first-class rail service. I’ve had the pleasure of speeding through the Japanese countryside many times, and on my most recent trip this past April, I was yet again reminded why Japan's high-speed trains are world famous.

“The first high-speed rail system, the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, operated by Japan Railways (JR), began operations in Honshu in 1964. Due to the streamlined spitzer-shaped nose cone of the locomotive, the system earned the English nickname ‘the bullet train’” explains Keigo Tachihara, senior concierge at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi , a five-star hotel steps from Tokyo Station that offers a complimentary Shinkansen escort service for guests. “Running at speeds of up to 199 miles per hour, the Shinkansen services Japan’s main islands of Honshu, Kyushu, and Hokkaido and is famed for punctuality — most trains depart on time to the second — comfortable, quiet cars with forward-facing seats, safety, and efficiency.” The majority of travelers visiting Japan will arrive in Tokyo , but thanks to the bullet train, it’s super easy and quick to hop around to popular spots such as Kyoto, Osaka, and Kanazawa.

Planning a trip to the Land of the Rising Sun? Scroll on for everything you need to know about the Shinkansen.

Meet the Expert

Keigo Tachihara is a senior concierge at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi , a five-star hotel near Tokyo Station.

Popular Bullet Train Routes

The most traveled bullet train line in the country, the Tōkaidō Shinkansen connects Tokyo to Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka, and Kyoto. The Sanyō Shinkansen connects Osaka (Shin-Osaka Station) with Fukuoka (Hakata Station) on Kyushu and reaches speeds up to 186 miles per hour. It was completed in 1975 as the second Shinkansen line. The Jōetsu Shinkansen connects Tokyo with Niigata. It was opened in 1982 and is operated by the East Japan Railway Company, commonly known as JR East. “It provides tourists with access to hot springs and ski resorts in Gunma and Niigata prefectures,” says Tachihara. Also operated by JR East, the Tōhoku Shinkansen connects Tokyo with Aomori at the northern tip of Honshu. “Sendai, Morioka, and Akita are the most popular stations,” per Tachihara. The Kyushu Shinkansen connects   Fukuoka and Kagoshima.

Travelers looking to ride the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu Shinkansen lines can buy individual tickets online with the SmartEX app (which is available in the United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Thailand) from one month in advance right up to the departure time of your chosen train. Tachihara advises that the app does seem to have issues with some foreign-issued credit cards. Prices vary depending on route and fare class.

If you’re planning to travel around Japan extensively, it’s worth considering the Japan Rail Pass (also commonly called JR Pass), a nationwide rail pass for train travel in Japan that can be used only by foreign tourists and offers unlimited rides on JR trains.

What to Know About Rail Passes

Japan Rail Passes are available in increments of seven, 14, or 21 days (the validity period is for consecutive dates) and come in two types: ordinary and green car. “The latter is valid on first-class cars, which offer more spacious seats and upgraded amenities.” Passes can be purchased through the Japan Rail Pass train reservation website and at ticket offices throughout Japan. “Kindly note that Nozomi and Mizuho trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines are not covered by the Japan Rail Pass, so tickets need to be purchased individually for those,” says Tachihara.

What to Expect on Board

Fare classes.

Ordinary cars, available on all Shinkansen trains, offer comfortable seats arranged in a three-by-two or two-by-two layout, ample elbow room, and plenty of luggage space. Both reserved and unreserved seating options are available. An upgrade to one of the green cars, the equivalent of first-class, offers even greater comfort with seats arranged in a two-by-two layout and more space. All seats are reserved, for a more streamlined, less crowded experience. Gran Class, which is available on certain trains, provides a luxurious experience with spacious leather seats arranged in a two-by-one layout. “Passengers receive personal attention, an escort to their seat, and complimentary amenities like blankets, warm towels, slippers, and eye masks are handed out,” says Tachihara. “You can also enjoy unlimited food and drinks during the ride on certain lines.”

“The Tokaido Shinkansen has a mobile food order service for green car passengers that allows riders to purchase snacks and beverages onboard by scanning a QR code. Items are then delivered directly to their seats by the onboard host/hostess,” explains Tachihara.

There’s a refreshment wagon that carries snacks, bento, beverages, and souvenirs for ordinary car passengers on Jyoetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen.

All trains have free Wi-Fi for all passengers, and there are restrooms available on board.

  • Like we said, these trains are timely and efficient, and they leave on the dot. Tachihara advises passengers to allocate ample time not only to reach the platform but also to get settled in the correct car.
  • While food is sometimes available on board (on certain routes), travelers with food allergies or dietary restrictions should purchase something at the station kiosks before boarding.
  • Be sure to check the luggage requirements and limitations when you book; you may need to reserve a specific seat if you have oversized luggage.
  • Be mindful of other passengers. Avoid talking on the phone in the train cars, and keep your voice down when chatting with travel companions.
  • Traveling on the Tokaido Shinkansen leaving Tokyo? Reserve a right-side window seat for views of Mt. Fuji.

Typhoon Weather Information: In-depth Guide to Precautions, Preparation, and Planning Alternative Activities When Visiting Japan

A significant number of typhoons hit Japan every year between summer and autumn . Particularly for those unaccustomed to these storms, experiencing one for the first time in a foreign country can naturally result in panic. Here, we will provide insight into essential typhoon weather information, including what to do if you encounter one, and how to prepare if one makes landfall during your trip. We also offer recommended alternatives in the event of unexpected plan changes, including tours and other indoor activities. As long as you arm yourself with proper knowledge and advanced preparations, there will be nothing to fear on your trip! Top Image PIXTA

Basic information: What is a typhoon?

When do typhoons occur in japan, what is the typhoon forecast for 2023, what to do if a typhoon occurs suddenly during your trip, if your flight is delayed or canceled, what to do if a disaster occurs while traveling, how to enjoy your stay, even in bad weather, my plans changed, now what recommended tours and activities with same-day booking.

A tropical cyclone has the potential to bring substantial rainfall. Among them, a typhoon is defined as one originating in the Northwest Pacific Ocean or the South China Sea with a maximum wind speed (10-min average) of around 17 meters per second or more. Under international agreement, a tropical cyclone is considered a typhoon when its maximum wind speed (one-minute average) is 33 meters per second or higher. Other tropical storms that occur around the world are called "cyclones" (Indian Ocean and South Pacific) and "hurricanes" (Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean, east of 180 degrees north of the equator), depending on where they occur.

(Chart based on data from Japan Meteorological Agency, 1991-2022)

In Japan, according to Japan Meteorological Agency data , typhoon outbreaks are most common between July and October, with a greater frequency between August and September. They are most likely to approach the Japanese archipelago in the summer season due to high sea temperatures. According to data from the Japan Meteorological Agency, the monthly average of approaching typhoons over the last 31 years (1991-2022) reveals a pattern of 3.6 occurrences in July, 5.3 in August, 4.8 in September, and 3.5 in October. With around three per month, this translates to a frequency of one close approach every 1-2 weeks during peak typhoon season . In addition, the Okinawa , Kyushu, and Shikoku areas are particularly prone to typhoons approaching and making landfall. Travelers intending to visit these areas between August and September are advised to begin actively checking the weather forecast about a week prior to their planned departure. Furthermore, autumn typhoons tend to be fast with substantial rainfall, warranting heightened caution. Recent irregular weather patterns have led to increased sea temperatures, contributing to the development of larger typhoons with a potential for significant damage.

Where do typhoons typically impact Japan?

A typhoon is classified as having made landfall in Japan when its center reaches the coastline of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, or Kyushu. Heavy rains often affect the Pacific Ocean side of the above-mentioned regions, which can prompt the suspension of the Tokaido Shinkansen and result in flight cancellations as well. Typhoons are influenced by various factors, including the presence of other concurrently forming typhoons, the Pacific High, and prevailing westerly winds. As a result, their movements can be complex, such as slow movement with sudden shifts between northward and southward directions. Before visiting Japan, be sure to actively check any weather updates so that you can make any necessary disaster preparations and familiarize yourself with evacuation protocols.

According to Weathernews , the anticipated typhoon count for 2023 is projected at around 29, which is slightly higher than average due to increased convective activity in typhoon-prone areas as compared to other years. The forecasted trajectory of these storms is expected to increase the risk of approach and landfall, primarily along the Pacific side, spanning the southern to eastern parts of the country. Powerful typhoons are also more likely to manifest higher intensities, thereby requiring utmost caution.

1. Ensure personal safety and stay informed with typhoon weather updates

Typhoons often bring in heavy rains and storms, increasing the risk of harm from airborne or falling debris, as well as stranding due to flooded streets, submerged roads, or inundated structures. To mitigate these risks, avoiding any unnecessary outdoor activities is highly advised. When a typhoon approaches, rivers and ponds may experience sudden increases in water levels, as well as beaches , which may draw in high waves, so be sure to avoid these bodies of water. As the typhoon's approach progresses, rain and wind intensity tend to escalate simultaneously. If evacuation is advised, it is important to do so during daylight hours promptly and proactively. Storms can also often lead to train delays and stoppages, potentially preventing you from returning to your accommodation. Therefore, if you know a typhoon is approaching, staying updated on traffic information is critical. Don't assume you're safe simply because the typhoon's current location is far from yours. Sometimes, warm and humid air continues to flow in from the typhoon's surroundings, resulting in heavy rain. Even after it has passed, it's important to stay vigilant and continue monitoring the weather. Depending on the typhoon's path, it can experience a significant change in intensity. Below are some multilingual websites you can refer to should a typhoon approach or make landfall.

  • Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) Twitter Maintained by JNTO. Provides updates and safety tips to international visitors in the event of a natural disaster. https://twitter.com/JapanSafeTravel
  • NHK World News Provides general news and weather information in multiple languages. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/
  • WeatherJapan A free multilingual weather forecast application for foreign visitors to Japan, provided by the Japan Weather Association and Sorakaze. Provides various weather information. iOS Android

2. Check and adjust your travel itinerary as necessary

Next, carefully review your travel itinerary. If you have an upcoming flight scheduled, it's essential to check the flight status, whether domestic or international. In anticipation of poor weather conditions, whether due to a typhoon or anything else, you may want to consider canceling your flight well in advance of your departure. Because flight delays and cancellations are typically determined by the situation at the time, it may be impossible to know anything for sure in advance. But the sooner you know, the better prepared you'll be to make necessary adjustments, including modifying your transportation or accommodation plans as necessary. If you plan to use the Shinkansen or limited express trains, it’s also important to check their operation status. Even if the typhoon does not appear to have any impact on your current location, there is a chance it may approach or hit your destination. It is essential to stay on top of the operation status of any trains you may take in accordance with your travel itinerary. Below are some useful websites that you can refer to.

  • Flight Information: Narita International Airport Official Web Site
  • Flight Information: Haneda Airport International Terminal
  • Flight Information: New Chitose Airport Terminal
  • Flight Information: Kansai International Airport
  • Flight Information: Sendai International Airport
  • Flight Information: Naha Airport
  • JR East Train Status Information
  • JR West Train Status Information

3. Prepare what you need

Depending on your current location, there's a possibility that you could face mobility restrictions in the aftermath of a typhoon, potentially leaving you stranded. On top of that, other disasters, such as floods or landslides, may disrupt essential services like electricity, rendering ATMs inaccessible. It's advisable to prepare enough Japanese yen in advance (enough to last for about a week should suffice), just in case such a scenario occurs. You'll also want to ensure your cellphone battery is fully charged in the event of a power outage. If the power goes out and your battery dies, it's important to know where and how you'll be able to recharge it. Places like convenience stores , internet cafes , and electronics shops may provide phone charging services during emergencies.

If you experience flight delays of cancellations due to a typhoon, please follow the steps below.

1. Check for flight modifications and refunds

Flights that are delayed or canceled due to acts of nature , such as typhoons and other weather conditions, as well as those rerouted through other companies, may be processed free of charge. The same applies to tickets that cannot be canceled or modified. But remember, as airline counters are likely to be flooded with others attempting to complete the same procedures, it’s a good idea to do this online or over the phone. However, be aware that with some LCC tickets, while you will be able to cancel your ticket, you might not be able to modify your flight or get a full refund, even in the event of a disaster. Therefore, it is advisable to check the company’s website in advance to confirm what disaster protection they offer, if any, when making your reservation.

2. Obtain proof of delay or cancelation of flight

Some airlines issue a certificate of proof when a flight is canceled or delayed over 30 minutes. If you need a certificate, please consult with your airline. Some companies may offer this service online as well.

3. Make accommodation arrangements

If you cannot return home due to a canceled flight, your travel agent or airline company may be able to make temporary arrangements for you, so be sure to consult with them if needed. However, do keep in mind that you will be responsible for the cost.

4. Check for flight delay compensation

Certain travel insurance policies and credit card plans may offer coverage for costs incurred due to flight delays or cancellations. To find out if you're eligible, check with your insurance or credit card company. To file an insurance claim, be sure to keep the certificate of flight delay or cancellation, as well as any receipts of expenses incurred for lodging, food, and beverage.

1. Understand current disaster information

If you encounter a disaster, including flooding and landslides, your priority should be your safety. Streams and ditches swollen by rain can have deceptive edges, which may lead to falls. Landslides are also more likely in this situation. As a typhoon intensifies and transforms into a storm, strong winds can send objects flying or even blow you away. The force of the wind may even trap your hand in a door. Because of these risks, it is highly advisable to avoid all unnecessary outings. Also, if you are staying near the seaside, be sure to avoid the coast, as waves tend to rise even before the typhoon's arrival and may remain turbulent even after it has passed. LIVE JAPAN has compiled a list of resources with essential information for emergencies and disasters. You can also check the official information various transportation agencies provide on their respective websites.

2. Notify family members of your safety

When major disasters like typhoons or earthquakes strike, telephones and Internet lines often become congested due to the high volume of calls from loved ones seeking safety confirmation. To address this issue, Japanese communication companies offer the following tools for ensuring safety confirmation.

  • Disaster Message Dial (171) Communications companies often provide ways to avoid communication congestion during disasters in order to quickly confirm the safety of your loved ones. By calling "171", you can leave messages for (and play messages from) the phone number of the person you wish to notify of your safety (or to confirm theirs). Almost any line can be used for outgoing calls, including land lines, cell phones, public phones, and IP phones, allowing even foreign visitors in Japan to utilize this service. All you need is to have the phone number of the person you wish to contact on hand. Messages can be recorded and replayed from anywhere in Japan, although not from overseas.
  • Disaster Message Board Web171 If you can use the Internet over a disaster unified SSID (Set Service Identifier) such as 00000JAPAN (“Five Zero Japan), you can leave a message on the message board using your PC or smartphone, as well as check the message board from overseas. Messages must be 100 characters or less, and the service is free of charge. In addition, although the URLs are separated by service provider, when searching, all other companies are included. Therefore, regardless of which one you register with, you can still search from among the URLs of other communication companies. The site is also available in English, Chinese, and Korean.
  • Disaster Message Board This service allows you to post your safety information on a Disaster Message Board in the event of a major disaster, as well as view safety information online (including through other carriers’ mobile devices). This service is only available in the event of a large-scale disaster, such as earthquakes of magnitude 6 or above. The service is provided by Softbank, NTT DoCoMo, KDDI (au), amongst others. (During non-disaster times, only the automatic e-mail feature is available.) This service can be used by those who have rented a smartphone during their stay in Japan. While there are packet communication charges, no usage fees apply. This service is also usable from overseas as long as you have an internet connection. iOS Android *The above links to the Disaster Message Board service provided by SoftBank.
  • Google Person Finder If you have access to the Internet, you can also use Google Person Finder, a service provided by Google to register and verify safety information. This service allows anyone to post or access safety-related details directly through the website, with no need to create an account or download an app. To share safety information, enter the name of the person whose safety you wish to report. To verify safety information, click on "Looking for someone," and enter their name. If their information has been logged, their safety status will be displayed. However, be aware that this service is accessible by anyone, exercise caution about disclosing personal information. While you can use your real name, refrain from sharing your exact address (general area is fine). You can also upload photos of your belongings or clothing instead of your face. The service is available overseas, as well. https://google.org/personfinder/japan?lang=en

If your trip is marred by persistent bad weather, changes in plan may be necessary. Fortunately, Japan offers numerous indoor facilities where you can still have a good time. For the time being, let the typhoon take its course, and consider making alternative plans for indoor fun instead. However, if a typhoon is approaching, making landfall, or poses any safety concerns, please refrain from going out anywhere at all, and remain at your accommodation. If you are unable to travel very far, you can always go shopping at a nearby supermarkets or convenience stores when it’s safe to do so. Below are a few indoor recommendations that promise enjoyment, regardless of inclement weather.

Research For Amtrak Train Routes And Prices

Get a thorough understanding of Amtrak train routes and prices before purchasing a ticket. Discover how to take the train from the starting point to the destination by exploring the Amtrak Trip Map . Learn about the locations and cities the train will travel through. Also, acquire a full picture of the amenities and services offered at the stations, such as checked baggage, Wi-Fi, accessibility, and more, and become acquainted with them. This allows one to plan a comfortable trip while also saving money on tickets.

Check Out For Everyday Discounts

Another surefire way to save money on ticket prices is to take advantage of Amtrak's numerous discounts based on a passenger's age or for membership in different organizations. Child tickets, students, veterans, military people and their families, government employees, and Rail Passengers Association members are all eligible for discounts. People with disabilities are also eligible for discounts. People with disabilities also get discounts. So, passengers must check Amtrak's " Everyday Discounts " page before reserving their tickets to see if they are eligible for any discounts.

Look For Bargains On Dedicated Deals Page

Amtrak regularly posts time-sensitive bargains on its dedicated deals page . And, believe it or not, some of these bargains are simply superb! These deals are unquestionably the best way to save money on Amtrak ticket prices. Some of these deals include discounts on purchasing a good number of tickets; some offer double points on Amtrak Guest Rewards; and others offer discounts to a particular location or at a particular time. There are a great number of deals to choose from. Aren't these deals incredible?

Bring Own Food And Alcoholic Beverages

Many trains provide one or more onboard eating options. Plus, passengers who use their Amtrak Guest Rewards Preferred MasterCard to make food and beverage purchases onboard receive a 20% discount in the form of a statement credit. Thus, enjoying the onboard food is also rewarding. But those wishing to save money must bring their own food, water, and beverages (alcoholic stock as per Amtrak guidelines). Passengers can eat their food and non-alcoholic beverages in their seats, in their personal Sleeping Cars, and in the Sightseer Lounges. Nevertheless, they can only enjoy private stock in their Sleeping Car accommodations.

Book Amtrak Tickets In Advance & Purchase In The First "Buckets"

Amtrak offers a distinctive way to purchase train tickets that works well for early-bird tourists. Amtrak offers tickets in 'buckets,' with the lowest rates going on sale first, as opposed to the dynamic pricing matrix used by the majority of airlines. The next bucket, with a higher ticket price, is opened up after the allowed number of tickets for that price in the bucket has been sold out.

It is also preferable to schedule a trip as soon as travelers can because inexpensive tickets on busy days sell out the quickest (this is especially true for the most popular and busiest Amtrak routes ). Amtrak even offers discounts for travel up to two weeks in advance. If travelers make their reservations 14 days in advance, they may still be able to save up to 25% on their Amtrak fare.

An Amtrak rail ticket can be booked up to 11 months in advance.

Opt For The Best Days Of The Week To Book An Amtrak Ticket

Amtrak Train has special offers every week ; it is recommended to check to see what sales are being offered by the company on Tuesdays and Fridays. However, according to Money Saving Expert , purchasing train tickets 12 weeks before the departure date can potentially result in further savings.

Therefore, travelers are recommended to continuously check the offers and ticket prices to get the cheapest tickets!

  • Cheapest days to book Amtrak: Tuesday and Friday

Be Flexible When Buying Amtrak Tickets

Similarly to other means of travel, flexibility is necessary if travelers are looking for the lowest fares. Sometimes, buying an Amtrak ticket on a certain day can cost them additional fees than the day before or after.

Consequently, if travelers are not limited by time and can postpone or schedule their trips earlier, it is guaranteed that their flexibility will pay off and save them some money.

Book Tickets On The Official Amtrak Website Or App

One of the many things to know about Amtrak is that the easiest way to buy a train ticket is online at Amtrak.com . Travelers can also use their Amtrak mobile app. If they are old school or just like speaking to real people and find it easier, they may still buy their tickets at the ticket counter at any Amtrak station.

Also, not only is it easier to buy Amtrak tickets online or via the app, but it's also cheaper since travelers normally get the best rates. In addition, passengers can sometimes avail of discounts and special deals when they use the official Amtrak website and Amtrak app. Waiting until one gets to the station typically entails paying the highest price since Amtrak tickets increase in cost as seats are booked and the departure date gets closer.

Study All Amtrak Seating Options Before Purchasing A Ticket

Travelers may choose from a variety of seating arrangements while traveling by Amtrak train. Additionally, there are several alternatives for sleeping cars. They can select a Roomette, a Bedroom, an Accessible Bedroom, a Bedroom Suite, or a Family Bedroom according to the train they are on.

Travelers may also browse images and the specifications of each seat or sleeper car on the Amtrak official website to know more about their seating options.

  • Some seat types on Amtrak trains: First Class, Business, Coach, and Sleeper Cars

Book The Appropriate Trip Duration When Buying An Amtrak Ticket

When travelers buy their tickets, they have a lot of various scheduling options accessible to them. One train, for instance, may go to its final station in just ten hours and without any stops. However, there may also be a few different itineraries that take 15 to 20 hours and have layovers.

Therefore, Amtrak riders should decide on the destinations they would like to visit before booking their tickets. That way, they can make a sightseeing vacation out of their train journey. Alternatively, if they want to get straight to their destination, booking an Amtrak train with minimal stops is better.

Download The Amtrak App

If travelers want to make their trip more efficient, they can install the Amtrak application on their smartphones. It is a useful tool for booking an Amtrak ticket and later showing it instead of printing it, finding a station at a certain location, and checking the status of a train.

Additionally, travelers will never need to be concerned about losing out on crucial information.

  • Mobile operating systems: The Amtrak app is compatible with Android, Windows, and iPhone.

Participate In The Amtrak Guest Rewards Program

A terrific method to get free class upgrades, hotel and rental car savings, and access to travel bargains is through Amtrak's free rewards program. Getting started with the program is free and just takes a few minutes.

Even if travelers do not book a trip frequently, it is a good idea to join up for Amtrak Guest Rewards since any points they earn are valid for two years as long as there is activity on their account.

Know Amtrak Baggage Limits

Before travelers get to the train station to book a ticket and board, it is crucial to be aware of how much luggage they may carry. In this manner, they steer clear of snags and unanticipated costs. There are baggage allowances of two personal items and two carry-on bags per Amtrak traveler.

Each traveler is also permitted to carry up to 4 checked baggage with them . The first two items are free with the purchase of admission. However, any extra bag after that will cost extra fees.

  • Amtrak Baggage Cost: $20 per additional bag

Choose An Amtrak Sleeper Bedroom Or Roomette For The Most Comfortable Experience

Although there are several booking options, as mentioned earlier, the most comfortable way to travel on long-distance trains is to reserve an Amtrak Roomette or Bedroom (and there are differences between the two) .

Travelers should know that all dining car meals, free bottles of water, hot showers, soft drinks with ice, and hot coffee are all included in their reservations. A special sleeping car attendant will also be assigned to them.

Travelers should make sure to tip the sleeping car attendant.

Kyoto Pref. tourists hit record 75M in 2023, surpassing pre-COVID level

July 24, 2024 (Mainichi Japan)

Japanese version

japan rail tours 2023

KYOTO -- Kyoto Prefecture saw a record 75.18 million tourists in 2023, up 13% from the year prior, the prefectural government announced on July 23.

The 2023 figure topped the previous record of 74.3 million marked in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic.

The main factors are believed to include the Japanese government's downgrading of COVID-19 to the same level as the seasonal flu in May 2023 and an increase in foreign visitors due to the weak yen.

Because tourist numbers were not released for the city of Kyoto in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, prefecture totals were also not available. In 2022, there was a recovery seeing 66.68 million visitors to the west Japan prefecture.

In 2023, the city of Kyoto saw 50.28 million visitors, 66% of the total for the prefecture. However, this remains lower than the 53.52 million it saw in 2019. In contrast, areas outside the city such as the northern region of the prefecture are reportedly welcoming more tourists.

Spending by tourists in 2023 including on lodging, souvenirs and food and beverages was around 1.66 trillion yen (roughly $10.69 billion), 25% higher than 2019's 1.33 trillion yen ($8.55 billion). Of this, 1.54 trillion yen, or 92% of the total, was spent in the city of Kyoto. This is believed to be due to the fact that most lodging and other facilities are located in the prefectural capital.

The Kyoto Prefectural Government's tourism office offered several reasons for the record number of visitors: more events were held in the same format as before the pandemic, discounts and coupons to promote travel within the prefecture were provided for the second year in a row, and the number of tourists from Japan and abroad increased due to the weak yen and other factors.

Visitor numbers have been reportedly on a sharp rise since fall 2023, and it is expected that 2024 will set a new record.

The guide was the best
Japan was so fun! A looooooot of free time so do you researches about what to do and visit in every city. Would have love more ''organised'' activities (like a dinner every night with the group,...). Compared to other G Adventures tour I did in the past, I felt that this group was less stick together since there was only a few group activities.
