Navigating the Japan Rail Pass in 2023: What Travellers Need to Know - Japanspecialist

Navigating the Japan Rail Pass in 2023: What Travellers Need to Know

Japan Rail Pass is the most convenient and best way to travel around Japan. And until recently, there was no doubt it lived up to its reputation. However, starting October 1st, the pass will experience a substantial price increase, affecting all types of passes, including the 7, 14, and 21-day options, as well as green passes.

Today, we'll provide an overview of the upcoming changes, explain the reasons behind the price increase, compare the current and new prices, offer tips for securing passes at the current pricing before the update, and provide alternatives for consideration. Is the Japan Rail Pass still worth it? Keep reading to find out.

The Japan Rail Pass: A Brief Overview

The Japan Rail Pass, commonly referred to as the JR Pass, is a special pass designed for foreign travellers visiting Japan. It allows unlimited travel on Japan Railways Group-operated transportation, including the famous Shinkansen Bullet Trains and various other trains, buses, and even a ferry. The pass offers flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and ease of use, making it a popular choice for those looking to explore different regions of Japan. All of this remains true.

Upcoming Changes to the Japan Rail Pass from the 1st of October 2023

  • Price Increase: The primary change affecting the JR Pass is the price increase. The base price of the pass has barely changed for decades, but due to factors like the yen's decline in value, rising energy costs, and maintenance expenses, Japan Railways has deemed a price adjustment necessary.
  • Access to Nozomi and Mizuho Trains: With the current JR Pass is not possible to ride any of the Nozomi or Mizuho trains. This will change from October 1st, 2023, and it is very good news. The Nozomi and the Mizuho have the advantage to be the fastest trains along the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen and the Sanyo/Kyushu Shinkansen. However, an additional supplement fee will be required to ride these trains.
  • Discounts at Tourist Attractions: We are still waiting for more news about the type of discounts you'll get purchasing the Japan Rail Pass, but it seems like there will be some. In September, we will know more about this.

Comparison of Current and New Prices

The following list shows the upcoming new prices, as well as the current ones, for various JR Pass types:

Ordinary 7-day 328 EUR (previously 190 EUR)

Ordinary 14-day 525 EUR (previously 302 EUR)

Ordinary 21-day 657 EUR (previously 387 EUR)

Green 7-day 460 EUR (previously 254 EUR)

Green 14-day 722 EUR (previously 410 EUR)

Green 21-day 919 EUR (previously 533 EUR)

These are 07-08-2023 rates. The prices might change.

Booking the JR Pass at Current Prices

The price increase will apply from the 1st of October 2023. Vouchers issued up to 30th September 2023 will be sold for the old price and can be exchanged in Japan within 90 days. If you are planning to visit Japan up to the end of December 2023, order your pass from us by midnight 28th of September 2023 and it will allow you to secure pre-update prices.

Act quickly to secure your JR Passes at the current price before they go up.  Purchase your Japan Rail Pass now.   While placing your order, you'll have the convenience of checking the exact date when the 90-day validity period commences. Simply select your desired pass, click "order now," and indicate your preferred "First date of use."

Rest assured; our calendar guarantees that your chosen first date of use will fall within 90 days from the date of purchase. For any additional information about validity and how to exchange the voucher, feel free to visit our comprehensive FAQ page . Don't wait any longer – seize this opportunity to get your passes online before midnight on 28th September 2023 and start mapping out your incredible journey ahead!

Is the JR Pass Still Worth It?

The short answer is still yes. The long answer is that it depends on individual itineraries and travel plans. For those intending to explore multiple regions in Japan and take advantage of the flexibility and convenience the pass offers, it remains a cost-effective option. However, for travellers with simpler itineraries, such as a round-trip between Tokyo and Kyoto, point-to-point tickets might be more cost-efficient.

For those with travel plans that include multiple regions, the JR Pass, even after the price increase on the 1st of October 2023, remains a cost-effective and convenient choice. Buy now .

We understand that planning a trip can be overwhelming, especially with the changing pass prices and the wide range of options available. That's why we're here to assist you in creating the perfect itinerary. We can assist you with the whole trip. Japan Rail Pass price

How much is a JR Pass? Check the prices for adults and children, for 7, 14 or 21 days, and for a Standard or Green Pass.

Select the class you wish to travel in, the number of accompanying children (if applicable) and enter the duration of your stay. It's that simple, so order your Japan Rail Pass today and get packing!

Children discounts applies to children between 6 and 11 years of age. Children under 6 years ride free but without seat resevation.

Note on prices: Please note that the sales prices may undergo slight changes, depending on the changes in the currency exchange rates, which are beyond our control.

The easiest way to travel in Japan

The JR Pass makes traveling around Japan easy. This multi-use ticket grants unlimited access to all JR network public transport, including Shinkansen high-speed trains, buses, ferries and airport transport, for an affordable price.

Thanks to this one-way ticket, you won't have to buy a new ticket every time you use public transport during your stay, which represents undeniable convenience and time-saving.

A 7-day JR Pass can allow you to travel to the most popular Japanese destinations (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, etc.) and use local transport for less than buying each ticket separately. If you're planning several long-distance journeys, the JR Pass will save you money.

JR Pass holders will also be able to enjoy discounts at some of Japan's popular tourist attractions from October 2023.

Validity of the JR Pass

Remember that your pass is valid for either 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days. Once activated, the dates cannot be changed, which means you should always coordinate your vacation plans with the validity of the pass.

Children's discount

If kids are among your travel companions on your trip to Japan, you will be glad to know a JR children's discount is an option. Check to see if any of these apply in your case.

Children between zero and 5 years of age can use all the JR transport system without having to purchase a Japan Rail Pass. The only caveat is that they are not allowed to occupy a seat and have to stay on an adult's lap unless there are empty seats available in the green, unreserved and reserved cars. Of course, there are no seat limitations if a pass is bought for them.

There is a child's pass available for children aged from 6 to 11 years that costs half the price of an adult pass.

All New JAPAN RAIL PASS – What to Know.

japan rail tours 2023

Japan Rail Pass Overview

How much the pass is, what train you can get on, what’s the differnece of regular car and green car, reservation is required, you might also like to read, all new japan rail pass (after oct.2023).

If you are traveling to Japan during 2023, please check the important update video about JR PASS on YouTube .

Japan rail pass was renewed on October 1, 2023. In this article, I’d like to explain this all new JAPAN RAIL PASS.

Japan rail pass (call JR Pass afterwords) is a train pass by JR Groups (former Japan National Railways)  that are sold only for travlers from foreign countries. Within the pass period of your JR Pass, you can travel across Japan from Hokkaido to Kyushu, with unlimited ride on JR trains including Japan’s fasttest train Shinkansen too.

The pass has 6 types depends on class of trains and length of days.

JR Pass for children are half price.

  • Trains need additional charge

You can get on any JR trains across Japan, but there are some exceptions. You cannot use the pass for the fastest service called “ Nozomi ” and “ Mizuho ” on Tokaido Shinkansen , Sanyo Shinkansen , that connects between Tokyo and Kyoto, Osaka and further to the west.

The renewed JR pass allows you to get on these fastest Shinkansen “with additional cost”. The additional cost depends on the destination. It will be 4,180 yen from Tokyo to Nagoya, and 4,960 yen to Kyoto and Shin-Osaka, 6,500 Yen to Hiroshima. This is per person one way. If you have JR pass for Green Car, you can get on green car with this price.

With JR Pass you can get on “ Hikari ” and Sakura which is the 2nd fastest in Tokaido Shinkansen and Sanyo Shinkansen. It takes a little more time than Nozomi because of some more stops it makes, but the speed of train is almost the same even for the “ Kodama ” that stops every station.

  • Trains you cannot use JR Pass

In the major cities and countryside, Japan has many private railways which is not covered by JR Pass. JR Pass can not be used for subways in the cities. Also, many tourist destination is covered by private railways. Tobu raiways for Nikko, Odakyu railways for Hakone, Kawaguchiko by Fujikyu railways, and airport access of Tokyo by Keikyu and Keisei, there are all private railways just in greater Tokyo region. Some of these destinations are covered by JR lines too, but some are not. So I recommend you to check your itinerary before you decide to purchase.

Green Car is a term used for the 1st class train in Japan sepecially for JR trains. All Shinkansen (bullet train) and limited express comes with Green Car. It usually has wider seats, and more leg room. No meals are including on the Green Car. Some Shinkansen by JR East have “Gran Class” that comes with light meal and drink, but you cannot get on Gran Class even with Green Pass. It’s important to note that not all trains come with Green car. In major cities or local lines, there are no Green Cars attached.

With JR pass, you can make reservation of trains without any extra charge. There are 3 types of trains.

* If you are traveilng during busy season or get on train from the middle of the route for long distance trains , I always recommend you to make reservation to guarantee your seats.

In case you missed the train you booked, you cannot make next reservation until the time of travel for that train finishes unless you cancel the train. If the train comes with non-reserved seats like “Hikari” “Sakura” and “Asama” on Shinkansens, you can get on the train anytime. That freedom is also the benefit of the JR Pass.

Where Can I purchase JR Pass?

You can purcahse the pass from the official site or agencies outside Japan. The price is the same wherever you purchase. The merit of purchasing from the official site is that you can make reservartion of the seat. You can purchase the pass from a month ago at the official site.

Some online agencies have benefit by purchasing from them. Please check with your agency.

  • Japan Rail Pass

Make the most of your trip to Japan with a JR Pass

The Japan Rail (JR) Pass is a deal offered exclusively to foreign visitors traveling in Japan under temporary visitor status. It allows you to pretty much take unlimited rides on the JR network throughout Japan. Since the JR Pass was first created, the shinkansen (bullet train) network has greatly expanded, and now it's possible to ride the shinkansen all the way from Hokkaido to Kyushu.

From October 1st, 2023, a regular seven-day adult pass costs 50,000 yen, while those looking for a little more luxury can buy a Green Car (first class) pass from 70,000 yen. The 14-day regular adult pass is 80,000 yen, while the regular 21-day pass costs 100,000 yen.

Kids' passes are reduced by 50 percent for children aged between 6 and 11.

The shinkansen is one of the fastest, most convenient ways to get around Japan

What is covered?

Outside urban centers such as Tokyo and Osaka, the pass is best used to cover distance, as it does not include municipal subways and private suburban lines. With thousands of kilometers of track, the JR network connects you to attractions across Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, the four main islands of Japan.

The pass allows you to ride many local buses operated by JR as well, including the tourist loop bus in Hiroshima, JR Hokkaido buses around Sapporo, and the local bus to Kusatsu Onsen. You can even ride the JR West Miyajima ferry, which operates from Miyajimaguchi, Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima and Miyajima.

NOTICE: Miyajima Visitor Tax

  • From October 2023, visitors to Miyajima will be required to pay the Miyajima Visitor Tax. Please show your JR Pass at the service window of the JR West Miyajima Ferry and then pay the Miyajima Visitor Tax separately. https://another1000years-miyajima.jp/en/visitortax/index.html

The Japan Rail Pass makes plenty of famous attractions accessible, allows for easy and convenient travel across the country, and can save you money on your travels. Aside from discounted travel, some tourist facilities also offer special discounts or other benefits when you show your JR Pass.

japan rail tours 2023

What isn't covered?

There are some important exceptions you should know before deciding to buy a pass or not. For instance, the JR pass does not include rides on the Nozomi (the fastest service on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen route) or Mizuho trains (fastest on the Sanyo-Kyushu Shinkansen route). If you're traveling on these lines, be careful which trains you board, as passengers who ride the Nozomi and Mizuho with a JR Pass will have to buy an additional ticket before boarding. However, purchasing these additional tickets includes added benefits, like being able to ride from Tokyo to Hiroshima without changing trains, for example.

In cities like Tokyo, the pass doesn't give you access to the subway and metro lines, so you might find it a little inconvenient if you will spend most of your time in one major urban area. Many of the major attractions have JR stations nearby, but if you find a quicker or more convenient route on the subway, you will have to pay extra. Using a pre-paid IC travel card, though, is a convenient way to make use of both private railways and JR lines. However, some suburban "liner" express trains on the JR network, aren't included either, and passengers need a special separate ticket to board them.

japan rail tours 2023

It's also important to note that Japanese railroad networks can be extremely complex, so sometimes JR trains will also use private railway tracks. In these cases (as well as those involving JR express buses), additional fees may apply.

How do I get a JR Pass?

japan rail tours 2023

How do I use it?

When you arrive to Japan, you can pick up your pass or exchange your voucher at a designated pickup location. Make sure to have your passport, temporary visitor stamp or sticker and your exchange order or reservation number ready before you arrive at the counter to ensure a smooth exchange. Once you receive your JR Pass, you can start using the trains. The JR Pass itself is your ticket, and you can sit in any of the available seats of the non-reserved seat cars except when you reserve a seat, in which case you are issued a seat ticket.

You can make reservations on most shinkansen and other long-distance travel (like limited express trains) for no extra cost with your JR Pass. Making seat reservations is a good idea, especially if you're traveling during peak times and seasons, or riding the first or last trains of the day.

Some trains, including the fastest shinkansen like the Hayabusa (Tohoku Shinkansen), and Kagayaki (Hokuriku Shinkansen), certain limited express trains and some popular sightseeing trains don't offer non-reserved seats, so seat reservations are mandatory. Seat selection is generally not available on local and urban trains, but some quick web research will help you to confirm.

JR Pass holders can now use the automatic gates at stations when available, and if you have additional tickets you can stack them and feed them into the machine at once.

Travel tip: if traveling in the direction of Kyoto and Osaka from Tokyo on the shinkansen, reserve a window seat on the right for a view of Mt. Fuji.

japan rail tours 2023

So, should I buy it?

If you're hoping to cover a lot of ground, want to use the shinkansen for day trips, or even if you'd prefer to avoid air travel, toll roads, highways, and long-distance buses, the JR Pass might be a good investment. However, if you choose to spend most of your time exploring Tokyo or Osaka, it may be wise to look into subway passes, or area rail passes.

The potential disadvantage to owning a JR Pass might be trying to squeeze too much into your itinerary to maximize your discount or, the opposite: buying a pass and not using it to its full potential. Both of these scenarios can be avoided with a little planning.

Even rural spots are within reach

JR Pass alternatives

Regional JR passes offer unlimited rides in specific areas. If you plan to travel extensively through Western Japan (Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, etc.), consider JR-West Rail Passes. If you'd like to focus your travel on the eastern parts (Tokyo, Nagano, Niigata, and Tohoku), look into the JR East Pass.

The Ultimate Japan Rail Pass Guide (2023)

Wander and Experience is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Planning a trip and considering the Japan Rail Pass for your trip? This ultimate Japan Rail Pass guide helps to answer any question you have on how the pass works, which pass to get, and where to order your pass.

While the Japan Rail Pass is one of the best travel tools available for those traveling to Japan, simple mistakes or poor planning can limit savings or cause visitors to overpay for rail tickets. Read through and inform yourself on the critical factors to determine if a Japan Rail Pass is right for your itinerary.

Read our other Japan Rail Pass posts for more tips and ways to get the most from the pass:

Is the japan rail pass worth it, the 20 best places to visit with the japan rail pass, 10 japan rail pass mistakes to avoid, how does the japan rail pass work.

The Japan Rail Pass is a countrywide rail pass that allows for unlimited travel across Japan in 7, 14, or 21 day periods on rail lines run by the Japan Railways Group, which consists of six regional railways in Japan.

Available only to foreign tourists visiting Japan, the Japan Rail Pass, also known as the JR Pass, provides visitors with an easy way to get around the country and an excellent value for those with itineraries that include multiple long-distance rail journeys.

Passes are available as an Ordinary Pass or a Green Pass, a premium travel class, with designated Green Cars on trains such as the Shinkansen, known to many as the bullet train, as well as on limited express trains.

The passes allow travel on most railway lines and services operated by Japan Rail Pass, including the Shinkansen lines and the Narita Express Train from Narita International Airport to Tokyo. In addition to the rail services, the pass can also be used on JR local buses and the JR Miyajima Ferry.

How much does the pass cost?

The Japan Rail Pass pricing is split between Green and Ordinary passes; 7, 14, and 21 Day Passes for each; and whether the pass is for adults or children aged 6-11 years old.

There are also two sets of prices, the lowest prices are for passes sold by authorized sales agents of the Japan Rail Pass, with the prices set by Japan Railways Group. There are a number of agents like JR Pass, which is an online sales agent that can ship all over the world.

The other price grid is for passes sold directly from Japan Railways Group , which come in at 10-13% more expensive than the authorized sales agents.

Japan Rail Pass Prices from Authorized Sales Agents

Japan rail pass prices for buying direct from japan railways group, what about small children 5 years old and younger.

Japan Rail Group does not require a rail pass for children up to 5 years old, though the child will not be allocated a seat. These small children can sit in an empty seat if available, though if the train is full, they will be required to sit on the adult’s lap.

Due to this limitation, one adult must be present per child traveling without a pass. This option helps families looking to save money, though those looking for the comfort and assurance of having a seat for their child can opt for the Child Pass. This is recommended during busier times, especially if traveling over public holidays.

Where can the pass be used?

Japan Rail Pass Route Map

Passholders can use the Japan Rail Pass on Japan Railways Group trains across the main islands of Japan: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. A wide range of train lines crisscross these islands, from local trains to limited express trains to the Shinkansen, often referred to by visitors as the bullet train, due to the bullet-like nose of the front of the trains.

The pass is also valid on local lines of JR Buses across the country and the JR West Miyajima Ferry in Hiroshima, which takes visitors to one of the city’s top attractions.

The Japan Railways Group consists of six independently operated railways that were split into regional railways during the Japan National Railway privatization in 1987.

The Japan Railways Group railways:

  • JR Hokkaido

It’s worth noting that while the regional railways that make up the Japan Railways Group offer by far the most extensive coverage and fastest trains in Japan, regionally and locally, several other rail operators run lines on which the pass is not valid.

Are there any exclusions?

Rail journeys on the Nozomi and Mizuho limited express Shinkansen services are the only exclusions for the pass. These are Shinkansen services with fewer stops, requiring less time between destinations. Though, the impact to pass-holders is relatively limited over long distances.

The Nozomi Shinkansen takes 2 Hours and 30 Minutes from Tokyo to Kyoto, with the Hikari Shinkansen taking 2 Hours and 10 Minutes.

While the Sakura Shinkansen takes 4 Hours and 20 Minutes between Osaka and Kagoshima, instead of the 3 Hours and 50 Minutes on the Mizuho Shinkansen.

How do you purchase a Japan Rail Pass?

There are three ways to buy a Japan Rail Pass: online through the Japan Rail Pass website, through an authorized Japan Rail Pass agent, or at a Japan Rail Pass sales office in Japan.

Buying the pass through authorized Japan Rail Pass agents like JR Pass….. will give you the lowest price of all three options, as the prices have been set by the Japan Rail Group, and are lower than buying directly from the Japan Rail Pass website or sales office.

When you order from an authorized agent like JR Pass….. you will receive a receipt that is referred to as an exchange order in the mail; after you arrive in Japan, you can then take your exchange order to a select Japan Rail Group ticket office listed here to receive your pass.

The ticket offices cover the major rail stations in the country, including international airports.

Is it easier to buy the pass in Japan?

Yes and no. While those who may have missed out on planning to buy a pass before arriving in Japan may still be able to purchase one after arriving, it will be for a higher cost than buying an exchange order before arrival, between 10-13% higher than JR Pass and other agents.

Additionally, Japan Rail Group has only recently started selling the passes in Japan, as they were previously only available to be ordered outside Japan. Sales of passes within Japan are on a trial basis that is not guaranteed to continue and could end by the time you read this.

If you know you need a pass, order one as early as possible to lock in the savings from buying on JR Pass and avoid the risk of not purchasing a pass before arrival.

Who is eligible to purchase a Japan Rail Pass?

To be eligible to purchase an exchange order or a Japan Rail Pass, you must enter Japan and receive a stamp in your passport that indicates you are a ‘Temporary Visitor.’

This designation will apply to most tourists visiting Japan, and the condition is in place to exclude residents of Japan and foreigners staying in Japan under different visas.

The Japan Rail Pass makes it easy and affordable for tourists to visit the country, so the limitations are to avoid pass use for other purposes.

What is the difference between the Ordinary and Green Pass?

The ordinary and green passes correspond with the different train classes for the Shinkansen and limited express trains. There are several minor differences in the classes. However, the most notable differences for consideration are the seat space and legroom, the ability to use non-reserved cars, and the price.

On Shinkansen lines, the ordinary class seats are five seats across in a two-aisle-three configuration, while the green class seats are four seats across in a two-aisle-two design. The photos below show the differences in seating in the two different classes.

With a few inches of additional space for each seat, there is also slightly more legroom and recline on seats in the green class cars.

How noticeable is the seat difference?

An apt comparison is to compare the seat widths of ordinary class to economy class in air travel and green class to premium economy. The legroom for ordinary class is much more than economy class air travel, and green class offers a little more.

Green Class Car on a Shinkansen Train

Shinkansen Green Class

Ordinary Class Car on a Shinkansen Train

Shinkansen Ordinary Class

Limits on Non-Reserved Seats for the Green Pass

Both Ordinary and Green Pass holders can make seat reservations for their respective seat classes on any eligible train. However, there are no non-reserved green class cars, while there are typically three non-reserved ordinary class cars on each Shinkansen.

Non-reserved cars give pass holders the ability to enter through gates and board a train without a ticket, with any non-reserved seat being free to use.

While Green Pass holders can also use the non-reserved ordinary class cars, there will not be the wider, more comfortable seats that the premium price of the pass entitles the holder to.

Price Differences Between Green and Ordinary Passes

The Green Pass is between 33-37% more expensive than the Ordinary Pass. This price difference is most likely the essential consideration for most travelers.

If the price premium over the ordinary pass is not a concern, and you value the comfortable space, the Green Pass is an easy choice. However, if you are looking for a more affordable way to travel and prefer saving money over a few inches of extra seat space, the Ordinary Pass is better.

Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it?

This is the most crucial question for those considering purchasing the Japan Rail Pass for their trip to Japan, and there is a dedicated post that goes into the details of determining the value for your trip .

Generally, visitors to Japan taking more than one round-trip ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto or a longer distance will find that the Japan Rail Pass will provide savings over standard tickets. It is worth reading through the post to confirm if these considerations will apply to your trip.

How to Use Your Japan Rail Pass

After purchasing and receiving your exchange order, the Japan Rail Pass is straightforward and relatively forgiving to scheduling mistakes and missed trains.

There are four main steps to receive and use the pass:

  • Take your exchange order to a Japan Rail ticket office to redeem your pass
  • Choose the date for pass activation
  • Reserve tickets on trains
  • Use the staffed gates to enter the train platforms

Take Your Exchange Order to a Japan Rail Travel Service Center

If you have ordered your Japan Rail Pass for the lowest possible price from authorized agents like JR Pass you will not receive a pass but an exchange order that can be redeemed for a pass.

Japan Rail Travel Service Center

When you arrive in Japan, take the exchange order to a ticket office listed here to redeem your pass. If you arrive at an international airport, you can visit the JR Rail airport ticket office to redeem your pass. Note the operating hours as some may not be open for early or late arrivals.

Choosing a Date to Activate Your Pass

To start using your Japan Rail Pass, you will need to activate the pass; this is a stamp added to your pass to show which dates it will be valid.

If you have a 7-day pass and do not want to use it from your first day of arrival, but rather have it become active three days into the trip, that is fine, and the ticket agent can set a future date at activation so you won’t need to visit again for activation.

Activation can be future dated up to 30 days from when you redeem your exchange order.

Making Seat Reservations with Your Japan Rail Pass

Seat reservations are easy to make with the Japan Rail Pass, as you can make a reservation at any Japan Rail travel service center or ticket office, and you can reserve seats at the time you redeem your exchange order.

When you make a seat reservation, the agent will give you a ticket that can be used for the reservation, though you will still need the pass with the ticket to show to gate staff as you enter the station.

It’s suggested to book tickets as early as possible to avoid your preferred departure times from selling out. If you have a precise itinerary planned, write or print out the train times or numbers before you arrive in Japan to help the agent issue all the tickets you would like.

Japan Rail Pass Ticket

Decide early and change later if necessary, as any Japan Rail ticket office can cancel your previous ticket and reissue a new one if you change your mind before the departure time.

Japan Rail is quite reasonable if you miss a train that you had a reservation on, you can either board a non-reserved car or have a new seat reservation issued for another departure.

It’s worth noting that if you order the Japan Rail Pass through the Japan Rail Pass website , while you will pay a slightly higher price compared to sales agents like JR Pass , you can book seat reservations before arriving in Japan. These early reservations are only necessary for those planning to travel over Japanese holidays, as non-holidays will generally have plenty of seat availability, especially if booked ahead.

Show Your Pass to enter the Train Platforms

Whether you are using a seat reservation or taking a non-reserved car or local train, you will need to enter the train platform by showing your pass to the gate staff.

Japan Rail Pass Ticket Check

This control allows the staff to confirm that you have a valid pass and prevents lost or stolen tickets from Japan Rail Pass holders from being used without a corresponding pass.

When using your Japan Rail Pass for non-reserved cars or on local trains where there is no seat reservation required, you need to show your pass, and the station staff will check the dates and let you through.

Traveling with Luggage

One of the key challenges for international visitors is traveling with luggage and managing it along the way. There are several different ways to manage luggage for those traveling with bags, though it’s fair to say each has a downside. Find the method that works best for your itinerary.

Oversized Baggage Japan Rail Pass

What storage is available for baggage on the Shinkansen?

Along the top of the seats on both sides of the train are overhead shelves that store bags, backpacks, and carry-on-sized rolling luggage. There is also storage for large bags behind the last two seats in each car, though these seats require a specific reservation.

Option One – Limit Your Large Luggage

Those traveling as a couple can limit their large luggage to a single bag, along with a combination of backpacks, totes, and a rolling carry-on. This will help you and your travel partner balance having storage space and managing the bags with a reasonable level of comfort.

Option Two – Store Your Luggage at the Station

Larger Japanese train stations have lockers available for storage; some, like Tokyo Station, can store bags as large as a large rolling suitcase for ¥600 per day. So leaving your large suitcase and any smaller bags at the station before exploring the country is a great way to limit your hassle.

The downside to this strategy is that these lockers are known to sell out, leaving you in a last-minute jam if you were expecting to ditch a bag or two.

Option Three – Leave the Bags at a Hotel

With many Japan Rail Pass users starting and finishing in the same city before flying out, you can plan your itinerary to make sure you have a night in your arrival/departure city on each side of your rail journey. This will allow you to leave extra bags at the same hotel for free.

For example, if you were flying into and out of Tokyo on your flights to and from home, consider booking the same hotel in Tokyo and asking the hotel to hold onto your bags. This will save money on storage and ensure you don’t get to the station to find all the lockers in use.

Make sure you confirm with the hotel before booking any non-refundable reservations. While most hotels in Japan are open to luggage storage, it is common for Japanese to use a courier service to send their luggage ahead when they travel; some hotels may limit the number of days they will allow it.

Option Four – Go Small with Bags if You Can

While not an optimal strategy for most visitors to Japan, an ideal packing strategy for those looking to have the freedom to explore with their rail pass is packing light.

If you can make it through a trip with a backpack and rolling carry-on, you will have the ultimate freedom to zip up and down Japan’s main islands, jumping off the train to see a sight and then getting on another one and moving on.

Are there other rail passes available?

The Japan Rail Pass is the best option for Japan visitors that plan to travel across regions or long distances. However, there are passes within each respective Japan Rail regional railway group for shorter durations, more limited coverage, and ultimately lower prices.

The below map of the Japan Railways Group companies shows each region where there are regional passes available. Check their websites below to see the different passes on offer.

JR Railways Map

Five Essential Japan Rail Pass Tips

1. buy for the lowest possible price.

Don’t overpay for your Japan Rail Pass. Instead, make sure you order your pass from a Japan Railways Group authorized sales agent like JR Pass , where the price, where the group sets the price and allows agents to sell for lower than their own website.

2. Create an Itinerary to Get the Most From Your Pass

Consider the validity of your rail pass before you finalize your itinerary to optimize the dates of rail travel during your trip. There is no need to pay for extra train journeys that your pass could have covered if you had only made a better schedule for your trip.

3. Redeem Your Exchange Order on Arrival

Save yourself time later in your trip by redeeming your exchange order upon arrival at the Japan Rail Travel Service Center at the airport . Then, you can activate your pass and even reserve train tickets to ensure you get the departure times you prefer.

4. Reserve Your Tickets as Early as Possible

At every point during your trip, reserve train tickets as early as you possibly can. From the moment you redeem and activate your pass to each time you make a plan or change a plan.

If you need to urgently catch a train, and opt to use the non-reserved cars, there is a chance that you will possibly need to stand for the journey. This can be inconvenient for shorter trips and downright exhausting for longer ones on packed trains. It is not uncommon to have residents and visitors filling up an aisle for a multi-hour Shinkansen journey.

5. Embrace the Flexibility of the Pass

The Japan Rail Pass provides unlimited journeys on some of the fastest trains in the world, with the ability to step on a train at a moment’s notice. But unfortunately, most Japan Rail Pass holders don’t fully appreciate the complete flexibility that the pass offers until after using it.

While you will need to book your hotels and other trip reservations based on a set itinerary, within given days of your trip to Japan, you have the flexibility to put the past to good use.

For example, while traveling in the Kansai region, if you are staying in Osaka or Kyoto, you could visit nearby Himeji Castle or have lunch or dinner in Kobe, reaching Kobe in only 12 minutes from Osaka, and all cities within an hour from each other by train.

This allows for last-minute decisions and itinerary additions that are much easier to consider with no additional cost.

Culture and customs.

Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.

This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.

History and government

Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history all influencing the country we all know and love today.

Ancient history

While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.

Pre-modern history

Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.

20th century

It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.

These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.

The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.

Reflect on the historic and sobering sites of Hiroshima and Nagasaki while on a 24 day Ultimate Japan tour.

After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. The late 20th century saw the country emerge as an economic superpower, and with that came the flourishing of several cultural sectors, such as the arts and cuisine.

Experience Japan's historic sites on a 13 day Land of the Rising Sun tour.

Top places to visit in Japan

One minute you’re walking through a former black-market quarter, the next you’re paying your respects at a 1400-year-old temple. Eclectic Tokyo is an essential part of any visit to Japan.

Wander through the streets of Tokyo on our 12 day Classic Japan tour.

If you’ve ever eaten at a sushi train restaurant, you’ve got the underrated city of Osaka to thank! The motto in this city is 'kuidaore' which roughly translates as ‘eat until you drop’ . You can consider that a (friendly) order.

Experience Osaka on our 12 day Japan Family Holiday.

The home of temples, palaces and the Gion district (where geisha live and work), Kyoto is also where you’ll find the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine.

Spot Geisha in Kyoto on our 9 day Japan Express tour.

4. Kanazawa

A great place to see a slice of old Japan, with classic sculpted gardens, a restored Old Town and well-preserved architecture from a variety of eras.

Explore Kanazawa on our 11 day Cycle Japan tour or on our 10 day Essential Japan adventure.

5. Hiroshima

Most travellers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets.

6. Yudanaka

This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).

Geography and environment

Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.

Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.

Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.

Traverse mountains, cycle coastlines and meander through forests on a 12 day Japan: Hike, Bike and Kayak tour.

Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! In cities like Tokyo, there are loads of quirky stores and funky galleries showcasing the works of independent fashion designers and gadget creators. From the outlandish to the kitsch, you're guaranteed to find loads of colourful clothing and edgy art that you won't be able to find elsewhere.

If you’re planning to bring back leaf tea or any other perishable or edible items, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.

What to buy

  • Kimonos This quintessential Japanese souvenir looks great hung on the wall as an interesting decorative piece. If you plan on wearing one, make sure you do so respectfully and learn the correct way to fold the garment.

Paper lanterns, kites and fans Japanese paper goods make great, relatively inexpensive souvenirs. Choose from high-quality, traditionally-made kites or delicate rice paper lanterns.

Electronics Shops in Japan are bursting with the latest tech gadgets. Just be sure to check that they are compatible for use at home.

Fashion Have fun with the amazing diversity of popular street culture fashion available in Japan. Vibrant, brash and sometimes bizarre – find something that no one back at home will be wearing.

Anime and manga paraphernalia Another inexpensive gift option, even for people who can’t read Japanese. Pick up a book, magazine, t-shirt or print from one of Japan’s many anime and manga stores

Festivals and events

If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular festive events in Japan.

Sapporo Winter Festival

Held every February since 1950, this festival features hundreds of statues and ice sculptures, snow slides and mazes, regional food and artistic performances. Winter in Japan is truly amazing, and the Sapporo Winter Festival is a magical way to celebrate.

Is tipping customary in Japan?

Tipping isn't customary in Japan and is not expected – in fact, it will sometimes be considered impolite. Some inns or ryokans may leave a small envelope in your room where a small gratuity can be left for housekeeping staff.

What is the internet access like in Japan?

Internet access is excellent in Japan, with one of the most developed high-speed internet networks in the world. Internet cafes and wi-fi hotspots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my mobile while in Japan?

Mobile phone coverage is excellent in Japan but be aware that talking loudly on your phone in public places (like in train carriages) is frowned upon. You will be expected to hide your mouth behind your hand if you must take a call in public. If you want to use your mobile phone, ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive (but be aware of the fees this may incur).

What are the toilets like in Japan?

In Japan, toilets range from high-tech bidets to standard western-style flushable toilets to squat toilets, which are still common outside the city. Sometimes you may need to pay for toilet paper, which can usually be purchased from a vending machine nearby.

Can I drink the water in Japan?

Drinking water from taps in Japan is considered safe. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Major cities often have water fountains in train stations.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Japan?

Major credit cards are accepted by some stores; however, Japan is still very much a cash culture and as such, some places may not accept credit cards. Ensure you carry enough cash to cover purchases.

What is ATM access like in Japan?

ATMs are common in Japan but unfortunately many of them don't accept foreign-issued cards. However, you can access cash from non-Japanese bank accounts via the Cirrus and Maestro systems at all post office ATMs around the country, as well as ATMs at 7-Eleven convenience stores.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

March, April and May are excellent months to holiday in Japan and, as a result, are the busiest. The weather is usually fine and beautiful cherry blossoms are in full bloom. September, October and November are also great months to visit Japan on holidays, as the days are warm but not humid and the autumn colours are out. Winter, while cold, offers great conditions for skiing, snowboarding, going to snow festivals and admiring the stunning mountain scenery. The summer months can be quite humid, but tourist areas are generally quieter and there are many fun festivals and fireworks displays to enjoy.

What is the weather like in Japan?

  • Spring (March to May): temperatures range from 10 to 20°C, with conditions getting sunnier and clearer towards the end of the season.
  • Summer (June to August): temperatures range from 21 to 32°C depending on where you are. It’s warmer in the south than in the north. You can expect some rain in June, and it can get quite humid towards the end of the season.
  • Autumn (September to November): temperatures range from 7 to 20°C. The humidity starts to calm down in September, but days stay warm until October. Nights can be chilly.
  • Winter (December to February): break out the coats, temperatures during winter range from 0 to 15°C. The mountains and the north experience snowfall .

How safe is Japan?

Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travellers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!).

Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

LGBTQIA+ travellers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.

Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalised yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Is Japan accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The needs of travellers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted.  Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make travelling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.

It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.

Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.

Travellers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.

If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Japan?

Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.

Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots.

Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf.

The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.

Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay.

What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?

Having a basic understanding of the language and culture of the country you're visiting can go a long way when it comes to, not only communicating efficiently but your overall trip experience as well. Some common phrases you need to learn are:

  • 'hello' - Konnichiwa
  • 'good morning' - Ohayō
  • 'thank you' - Arigatou Gozaimasu
  • 'please' - Onegaishimasu

What religions do they practice in Japan?

There are two dominant religions in Japan - Shinto and Buddhism. The majority of Japanese people practice both simultaneously, however, there is a small number of the population that practise other religions such as Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, and Islam.

japan rail tours 2023

As of October 1, 2023, the JR Pass prices have surged by a substantial 70%. Here's a breakdown of the old and new prices for the 7-, 14- and 21-day ordinary reserved seat JR Pass, courtesy of the  Japan Rail Pass official website .

New prices: Adult | Child (6–11 years old)

  • 7-day pass: ¥50,000 | ¥25,000
  • 14-day pass ¥80,000 | ¥40,000
  • 21-day pass ¥100,000 | ¥50,000

Old prices: Adult | Child (6–11 years old)

  • 7-day pass ¥29,650 | ¥14,820
  • 14-day pass ¥47,250 | ¥23,620
  • 21-day pass ¥60,450 | ¥30,220

Which JR Pass is Right For You?

A photo of a Shinkansen train running through Tokyo taken from a train platform.

With these new prices in mind, it's worth doing additional research and calculations to determine whether the JR Pass is worth your pretty penny and, if so, which one will serve you best.

Due to a vested interest in the topic, we've put together some scenarios for you courtesy of the trusty  JR Pass Fare Calculator  (worth bookmarking).

7-Day JR Pass Sample Itinerary

Imagine you're visiting Japan for a week, aiming to explore different cities while minimizing your time in Tokyo. Here's a sample itinerary:

Day 1: Narita → Tokyo

Day 2: Tokyo → Kanazawa

Day 3: Kanazawa → Osaka

Day 4: Osaka

Day 5: Osaka → Nara → Kyoto

Day 6: Kyoto → Tokyo

Day 7: Tokyo → Narita

This Golden Route-adjacent itinerary includes popular destinations for first-time travelers in Japan who have a short trip duration, except there's a lot of moving around.

Total Distance: 1,462 km

Total Time: 11h 28min (nonstop)

Your Itinerary: ¥40,210

This type of itinerary also falls short of the ¥50,000 pricetag of the 7-day JR Pass.

A street photo of Osaka, Japan

Now, let's consider a scenario with fewer destinations but covering wider ground:

Day 2: Tokyo → Osaka

Day 3: Osaka

Day 4: Osaka → Fukuoka

Day 5: Fukuoka

Day 6: Fukuoka → Tokyo

This food-lovers itinerary includes fewer destinations than the previous one but allows more time at every city and has indeed paid for itself.

Total Distance: 2,489 km

Total Time: 12h 17min (nonstop)

Your Itinerary: ¥56,050

Your Savings: ¥6,050

Is seven days in Japan enough? In our (biased) opinion, the limit does not exist when it comes to time spent in Japan. Making the 7-day JR Pass worth the investment depends on how far you're willing to travel. The key might be to make your destinations further apart and each ride a little longer.

14-Day JR Pass Sample Itinerary

A photo of Nagoya Castle at dusk.

The 14-day and 21-day passes can offer even greater value for travelers with longer stays or more extensive itineraries. We recommend considering the areas you plan to visit, the frequency of travel, and the cost of individual train tickets.

Day 2: Tokyo (Shibuya, Harajuku, Shinjuku)

Day 3: Tokyo (with a day trip to Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture)

Day 4: Tokyo → Kanazawa

Day 5: Kanazawa → Nagoya

Day 6: Nagoya → Hiroshima

Day 7: Hiroshima (with a day trip to Miyajima Island)

Day 8: Hiroshima → Hakata

Day 8: Hakata → Osaka

Day 9: Osaka

Day 10: Osaka → Nara

Day 11: Nara → Kyoto

Day 12: Kyoto

Day 13: Kyoto → Tokyo

Day 14: Tokyo → Narita

This sample 14-day itinerary covers a whopping 3,262 kilometers of train travel alone, includes key Golden Route stops, a mix of modern and traditional Japan, and some day trips for good measure.

Total Distance: 3,262 km

Total Time: 23h 24min (nonstop)

Your Itinerary: ¥92,860

Your Savings: ¥12,860

Oh, and it pays for itself!

21-Day JR Pass Sample Itinerary

A photo of an Edo-era street in Takayama, Japan.

Our idea of heaven? A 21-day trip to Japan! With so much time in Japan, it'd be rude not to cover as much ground as possible. This sample itinerary covers major cities, northern and southern Japan, modern and traditional regions, key Golden Route destinations and beyond.

Day 1: Narita → Tokyo (Shibuya, Harajuku)

Day 2: Tokyo (Shinjuku, Akihabara, Ueno)

Day 3: Tokyo (Asakusa) and a day trip to Yokohama

Day 4: Tokyo → Kyoto

Day 5: Kyoto

Day 6: Kyoto (Arashiyama)

Day 7: Kyoto → Fukuoka

Day 8: Fukuoka

Day 8: Fukuoka → Kagoshima

Day 9: Kagoshima

Day 10: Kagoshima → Hiroshima

Day 11: Hiroshima

Day 12: Hiroshima → Osaka

Day 13: Osaka → Takayama

Day 14: Takayama

Day 15: Takayama

Day 16: Takayama → Sendai

Day 17: Sendai → Hakodate

Day 18: Hakodate → Sapporo

Day 19: Sapporo

Day 20: Sapporo → Tokyo

Day 21: Tokyo → Narita

If we were giving out cost performance awards, we'd be handing the gold place medal to this itinerary.

Total Distance: 7,073 km

Total Time: 48h 58min (nonstop)

Your Itinerary: ¥173,690

Your Savings: ¥73,690

It's all relative, and variables come into play, but this type of itinerary saves you a handsome ¥73,690 with the 21-day JR Pass.

Is the JR Pass Still Worth It?

A photo of the Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) on top of a Tokyo subway map.

Before the price hike, we'd answer with a resounding yes. With the increased prices, it's worth doing extra research and calculations to determine whether the JR Pass will serve you well. If you plan to travel long-distance and visit several cities in Japan, the JR Pass is still worth it. On top of long-distance travel savings, it provides additional perks like discounts for selected tourist sites, free seat reservations on JR trains, convenience for first-time travelers in Japan, and more.

 Yes, if you…

  • Plan on long-distance travel
  • Want to visit several cities in Japan
  • Have a short trip duration
  • Are a first-time traveler in Japan
  • Don't mind paying extra for convenience and flexibility

If your itinerary is more focused or you're spending significant time in Tokyo (and surrounds), the JR Pass might not provide the same level of savings; single-journey Shinkansen tickets, the JR Tokyo Wide Pass, or other regional passes may be better suited.

No, if you…

  • Plan to stay in or adjacent to Tokyo
  • Only plan to visit two (or so) places in Japan
  • Don't plan on extensive long-distance travel
  • Are staying in Japan for an extended period of time
  • Are familiar with and comfortable using public transport in Japan

Japan Train Passes For Regional Travel

A pair of JR Tokyo Wide Pass booklets.

If what you envisioned for your Japan trip doesn't make the JR Pass a worthy investment, there are other Japan train passes that may still give you the chance to save some yen.

If You're Staying in Tokyo: JR Tokyo Wide Pass

If your Japan itinerary revolves around the almighty capital, the Tokyo Wide Pass is your ideal choice. This pass provides three consecutive days of unlimited travel on trains and Shinkansen in the areas covered.

Add the Tokyo Wide Pass to your basket if any of the below apply to you or sound appealing:

  • Basing yourself in Tokyo and taking day trips to Lake Kawaguchiko and Nikko
  • Visiting hot springs and staying at resorts in places like Karuizawa (for any of you Terrace House fans out there), Kusatsu, or Izu
  • Traveling in and around Tokyo (Shibuya, Shinjuku, Akihabara) and surrounding areas (Kamakura)

Check out the  JR East Tokyo Wide Pass web page  for detailed information.

For Day-Trippers: Hakone Free Pass and Mount Fuji Pass

A photo of Hakone Shrine in Kanagawa, Japan.

Been there, done that when it comes to Japan? Keen on living like a Tokyoite but taking day trips to adjacent spots like Hakone and Mt. Fuji? Have a more focused itinerary but want to include some short-haul day trips? The Hakone Free Pass or Mount Fuji Pass, of course.

Hakone Free Pass

This pass is valid for two days from Shinjuku Station, includes unlimited rides on eight modes of transportation (including the ropeway and cable car), discounted round-trip tickets from Shinjuku, and provides discounts at over 70 facilities (tourist spots, hot springs, museums, etc.) in Hakone.

Mount Fuji Pass

A photo of Mount Fuji taken by Lake Kawaguchiko in Yamanashi, Japan.

With 1-, 2- or 3-day options available, the Mount Fuji Pass allows you to see Japan's tallest peak from all its best angles. It includes unlimited rides on buses and trains around the Mt. Fuji area , plus entry tickets and special deals for popular amusement facilities, including FujiQ Highland, Lake Kawaguchiko Sightseeing Boat and the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway.

A list of pros and cons to buying the Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass)

The JR Pass remains a valuable resource for travelers exploring Japan, but its worth varies based on your Itinerary and travel habits. To determine if it's worth it after the 2023 price increase, carefully plan your trip, calculate potential train costs, and compare them to the price of the JR Pass. Doing so can ensure you're making a well-informed decision for your Japanese adventure. Is the JR Pass worth it if you stay in Tokyo? We're leaning towards no for this one, but ultimately, this one's on you and will naturally differ depending on the circumstances.

In light of this, we have updated this list to include four more tips and tricks every passenger should be aware of before booking Amtrak tickets. Have fun, and enjoy the ride!

Research For Amtrak Train Routes And Prices

Get a thorough understanding of Amtrak train routes and prices before purchasing a ticket. Discover how to take the train from the starting point to the destination by exploring the Amtrak Trip Map . Learn about the locations and cities the train will travel through. Also, acquire a full picture of the amenities and services offered at the stations, such as checked baggage, Wi-Fi, accessibility, and more, and become acquainted with them. This allows one to plan a comfortable trip while also saving money on tickets.

Check Out For Everyday Discounts

Another surefire way to save money on ticket prices is to take advantage of Amtrak's numerous discounts based on a passenger's age or for membership in different organizations. Child tickets, students, veterans, military people and their families, government employees, and Rail Passengers Association members are all eligible for discounts. People with disabilities are also eligible for discounts. People with disabilities also get discounts. So, passengers must check Amtrak's " Everyday Discounts " page before reserving their tickets to see if they are eligible for any discounts.

Look For Bargains On Dedicated Deals Page

Amtrak regularly posts time-sensitive bargains on its dedicated deals page . And, believe it or not, some of these bargains are simply superb! These deals are unquestionably the best way to save money on Amtrak ticket prices. Some of these deals include discounts on purchasing a good number of tickets; some offer double points on Amtrak Guest Rewards; and others offer discounts to a particular location or at a particular time. There are a great number of deals to choose from. Aren't these deals incredible?

Bring Own Food And Alcoholic Beverages

Many trains provide one or more onboard eating options. Plus, passengers who use their Amtrak Guest Rewards Preferred MasterCard to make food and beverage purchases onboard receive a 20% discount in the form of a statement credit. Thus, enjoying the onboard food is also rewarding. But those wishing to save money must bring their own food, water, and beverages (alcoholic stock as per Amtrak guidelines). Passengers can eat their food and non-alcoholic beverages in their seats, in their personal Sleeping Cars, and in the Sightseer Lounges. Nevertheless, they can only enjoy private stock in their Sleeping Car accommodations.

Book Amtrak Tickets In Advance & Purchase In The First "Buckets"

Amtrak offers a distinctive way to purchase train tickets that works well for early-bird tourists. Amtrak offers tickets in 'buckets,' with the lowest rates going on sale first, as opposed to the dynamic pricing matrix used by the majority of airlines. The next bucket, with a higher ticket price, is opened up after the allowed number of tickets for that price in the bucket has been sold out.

It is also preferable to schedule a trip as soon as travelers can because inexpensive tickets on busy days sell out the quickest (this is especially true for the most popular and busiest Amtrak routes ). Amtrak even offers discounts for travel up to two weeks in advance. If travelers make their reservations 14 days in advance, they may still be able to save up to 25% on their Amtrak fare.

An Amtrak rail ticket can be booked up to 11 months in advance.

Opt For The Best Days Of The Week To Book An Amtrak Ticket

Amtrak Train has special offers every week ; it is recommended to check to see what sales are being offered by the company on Tuesdays and Fridays. However, according to Money Saving Expert , purchasing train tickets 12 weeks before the departure date can potentially result in further savings.

Therefore, travelers are recommended to continuously check the offers and ticket prices to get the cheapest tickets!

  • Cheapest days to book Amtrak: Tuesday and Friday

Be Flexible When Buying Amtrak Tickets

Similarly to other means of travel, flexibility is necessary if travelers are looking for the lowest fares. Sometimes, buying an Amtrak ticket on a certain day can cost them additional fees than the day before or after.

Consequently, if travelers are not limited by time and can postpone or schedule their trips earlier, it is guaranteed that their flexibility will pay off and save them some money.

Book Tickets On The Official Amtrak Website Or App

One of the many things to know about Amtrak is that the easiest way to buy a train ticket is online at Amtrak.com . Travelers can also use their Amtrak mobile app. If they are old school or just like speaking to real people and find it easier, they may still buy their tickets at the ticket counter at any Amtrak station.

Also, not only is it easier to buy Amtrak tickets online or via the app, but it's also cheaper since travelers normally get the best rates. In addition, passengers can sometimes avail of discounts and special deals when they use the official Amtrak website and Amtrak app. Waiting until one gets to the station typically entails paying the highest price since Amtrak tickets increase in cost as seats are booked and the departure date gets closer.

Study All Amtrak Seating Options Before Purchasing A Ticket

Travelers may choose from a variety of seating arrangements while traveling by Amtrak train. Additionally, there are several alternatives for sleeping cars. They can select a Roomette, a Bedroom, an Accessible Bedroom, a Bedroom Suite, or a Family Bedroom according to the train they are on.

Travelers may also browse images and the specifications of each seat or sleeper car on the Amtrak official website to know more about their seating options.

  • Some seat types on Amtrak trains: First Class, Business, Coach, and Sleeper Cars

Book The Appropriate Trip Duration When Buying An Amtrak Ticket

When travelers buy their tickets, they have a lot of various scheduling options accessible to them. One train, for instance, may go to its final station in just ten hours and without any stops. However, there may also be a few different itineraries that take 15 to 20 hours and have layovers.

Therefore, Amtrak riders should decide on the destinations they would like to visit before booking their tickets. That way, they can make a sightseeing vacation out of their train journey. Alternatively, if they want to get straight to their destination, booking an Amtrak train with minimal stops is better.

Download The Amtrak App

If travelers want to make their trip more efficient, they can install the Amtrak application on their smartphones. It is a useful tool for booking an Amtrak ticket and later showing it instead of printing it, finding a station at a certain location, and checking the status of a train.

Additionally, travelers will never need to be concerned about losing out on crucial information.

  • Mobile operating systems: The Amtrak app is compatible with Android, Windows, and iPhone.

Participate In The Amtrak Guest Rewards Program

A terrific method to get free class upgrades, hotel and rental car savings, and access to travel bargains is through Amtrak's free rewards program. Getting started with the program is free and just takes a few minutes.

Even if travelers do not book a trip frequently, it is a good idea to join up for Amtrak Guest Rewards since any points they earn are valid for two years as long as there is activity on their account.

Know Amtrak Baggage Limits

Before travelers get to the train station to book a ticket and board, it is crucial to be aware of how much luggage they may carry. In this manner, they steer clear of snags and unanticipated costs. There are baggage allowances of two personal items and two carry-on bags per Amtrak traveler.

Each traveler is also permitted to carry up to 4 checked baggage with them . The first two items are free with the purchase of admission. However, any extra bag after that will cost extra fees.

  • Amtrak Baggage Cost: $20 per additional bag

Choose An Amtrak Sleeper Bedroom Or Roomette For The Most Comfortable Experience

Although there are several booking options, as mentioned earlier, the most comfortable way to travel on long-distance trains is to reserve an Amtrak Roomette or Bedroom (and there are differences between the two) .

Travelers should know that all dining car meals, free bottles of water, hot showers, soft drinks with ice, and hot coffee are all included in their reservations. A special sleeping car attendant will also be assigned to them.

Travelers should make sure to tip the sleeping car attendant.
