G-Dragon Announces 2017 Act III, M.O.T.T.E World Tour

Bigbang's G-Dragon will head to three continents on one of the largest tours ever held by a Korean musician.

G-Dragon aka Kwon Ji-Yong of South Korean boy band Bigbang attends the launch party for 'Acne Studio' flagship store on Sept. 18, 2015 in Seoul.

G-Dragon  will be holding one of the largest-scale K-pop world tours ever this summer, announced the artist’s label on Tuesday.

The BIGBANG frontman and Korean music icon will head to 19 cities on his upcoming ACT III, M.O.T.T.E world tour. It kicks off in Seoul, South Korea on June 10, and includes eight stops in different cities throughout North America in July. The solo concert series, G-Dragon’s third, will take the artist to some of the most prominent music venues in North America, Australia, and Asia, including the Tokyo Dome and Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

The tour’s title, officially G-Dragon 2017 Concert: Act III, M.O.T.T.E , features an acronym for “Moment of Truth The End.” It is the largest tour ever conducted by a Korean male solo artist. According to the concert’s official page on YG Entertainment’s website,  Act III, M.O.T.T.E  refers to the third act in G-Dragon’s life and reflects “loneliness and anguish hidden behind the glamorous life from his massive success.”

The tour will reportedly be preceded by the release of G-Dragon’s third album, his first since 2013’s  Coup D’Etat.

The far-reaching concert series will reflect G-Dragon’s expansive career as an artist who has spent the majority of his life in the limelight, ever since being part of child band Little Roo’ra. Since BIGBANG’s start in 2006, the singer-songwriter has become one of K-pop’s most recognized stars, known both for his musical artistry and as an avant-garde leader of fashion.

Trending on Billboard

Infusing his personality and life experiences into his music, performances, and music videos, G-Dragon’s songs are typically large-scale, dramatic productions that blend hip hop with a variety of genres, particularly EDM, R&B, and pop. Surpassing regional boundaries, he’s collaborated with the likes of Diplo , Skrillex , and Missy Elliott in the past while simultaneously acting as a member of Bigbang and pursuing a solo career.

Though he hasn’t released any solo music in several years, G-Dragon’s kept busy in 2017. Earlier this year, he collaborated with R&B singer Zion.T on “ Complex ” and, more recently, the BIGBANG member joined  IU on her new single, “Palette.”

The Bias List // K-Pop Reviews & Discussion

K-pop reviews and discussion with just a hint of bias…, g-dragon act iii motte world tour in seattle – review & recap.

g dragon world tour 2017

But with this exhilaration came a bit of concern. Were there really enough k-pop fans in this corner of the country to make Seattle a worthwhile stop for someone of GD’s caliber? Before the concert began, I was worried about all the empty seating within the Key Arena. But when the show finally kicked off (an hour late…), the place was nicely packed. Not completely sold out, but certainly not embarrassing.

At this point, I’ve seen seven k-pop shows and attended two KCONs, but a full concert by a solo act was sure to be different. Having watched GD’s previous tours on DVD, I knew that he was more than capable of filling an entire two hours on his own. The high quality of the show wasn’t surprising at all. Instead, it was the format and tone of the MOTTE tour that really flipped expectations.

One listen to GD’s newest album makes it clear that he’s working to strip back the layers of his “G-Dragon” persona and dig a little deeper into what makes Kwon Ji Yong (his birth name) tick. Almost every moment of MOTTE , whether directly or indirectly, dealt with the duality of these personas and the toll that celebrity has taken on the person inside. This was hammered home during the show’s third act, where an opening interstitial provided a testimony of sorts from Ji Yong himself. As the camera lingered on his every word and mannerism, the video clip elicited an almost uncomfortable mixture of emotions from the crowd. The moment seemed to stretch on forever, as far removed from traditional k-pop fan service as you could get. GD’s music has always been more personal than his work with Bigbang , but this kind of direct vulnerability is not something you expect to see at a k-pop concert.

g dragon world tour 2017

The topic of celebrity has been combed over infinitely by those in the public spotlight, and often causes non-celebs to roll their eyes as they go searching for the world’s smallest violin. I’m honestly not all that interested in knowing much about a celebrity’s personal life and inner struggles, and k-pop isn’t either. That’s what made MOTTE such a statement. Korean idol singers just don’t talk about these things. That GD framed his entire tour around the subject — from shocking video clips invoking a sort of “idol persona” plastic-surgery procedure to interviews with his friends, family and colleagues that ranged from funny to touching — feels slightly revolutionary for the genre. And it made the final encore of his dynamite 2017 single Untitled, 2014 even more potent and humanizing as he roamed the front row of the crowd, looking as if it might swallow him up forever.

The music itself was uniformly great, though the sound system was having issues here and there. Thankfully, GD chose to hire a live band, which offered the opportunity for intense rearrangements of many tracks. More often than not this included an aggressive injection of electric guitar to songs where you might not expect to hear it. This was a smart move from the production end of things, and beefed up his more spare material. Though primarily a hip-hop artist, GD has always carried himself as a rock star, so it made sense from a style standpoint as well.

The show kicked off with a few tracks from his first album, including a massive version of Heartbreaker . With a few exceptions, MOTTE moved through his discography in chronological order, providing a few tracks from One Of A Kind and Coup d’Etat before performing Kwon Ji Yong in its entirety. Highlights were (of course), the impossibly rousing, anthemic encore of Crooked , the dark, bombastic rearrangement of Obsession and the intense party atmosphere of the keeps-getting-more-addictive-with-every-play Bullshit .

g dragon world tour 2017

Going into a G-Dragon concert, you don’t necessarily expect the kind of polished dance formations that idol groups are able to offer. GD is a different type of performer, incapable of hiding his honestly behind a shiny, practiced-to-perfection veneer. As many fans have noticed, he’s lost a fair bit of weight recently, and this appearance stripped him of some of the unapproachable braggadocio that he’s often thrown around. To me, he looked utterly fragile on stage. Maybe it was because his group members weren’t there to flank him. Maybe it’s just because he’s going through stuff that none of us can speculate about. But whatever it was, it made MOTTE feel oddly personal and compelling.

Sure, his impish mannerisms and effortlessly charismatic presence were fully intact. This man can squeeze every ounce of attitude from a simple piece of choreography. Even though he was surrounded by dancers through most of the night, I never once wanted to look at anything else but him. He’s a true superstar in every sense of the word, but MOTTE wasn’t about that. As he often reminded us, this was Kwon Ji Yong on stage, with all his imperfections and fears and vulnerabilities. It may not have been the kind of k-pop show I had been expecting, but it will be hard to wipe away MOTTE ‘s bittersweet tone any time soon.

I can’t wait to go this Wednesday. It’s my first show and being who it is, it will be hard to beat. Of that, I am certain!

This was extremely well written and interesting. I will be seeing GDragon tomorrow in Miami and I’m very excited. I wanted some detail about the concert and got your rich explanation. Thank you for writing this. I’m even more excited to see G Dragon now

Thank you for this beautiful review of MOTTE 2017. Jiyong said this album, and tour, was more personal. He wanted VIPs to know Jiyong more than GD. And it sounds like you got just that from the concert. It’s an extremely well written review. Thank you.

Hi, can I ask how long his concert usually lasts? I’m just paranoid that I’ll miss my train back because I just went all out and bought his tickets as soon as they came out x’D

From what I can remember, it was about two hours. But it also started an hour late. Not sure if that is normal or was just an issue with the Seattle stop.

G-Dragon, the leader of the hit K-pop boy group, Big Bang, is surely in for some ride as he has just been reported to be preparing for his upcoming world concert tour. Just recently, the management company of G-Dragon, YG Entertainment, has just confirmed that the K-pop idol will be having his solo concert world tour really soon.

The concert tour is referred to by most people as the G-Dragon 2017 World Tour. According to Pop Crush , the concert tour will kick off this coming July 11 in Seattle, Canada. After which, he will be heading throughout the rest of Canada and then to the U.S.

Specifically, G-Dragon will be heading to Houston, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago and Brooklyn. It has also been confirmed that the world concert tour will bear the name of "M.O.T.T.E." which stands for "Moment of Truth the End". Whichever the phrase means, his fans surely won't mind at as what they care about is seeing their idol perform in stage in the most exhilarating of all ways.

This will surely be one of the biggest world concert tours that G-Dragon has embarked in, knowing that he will visit different continents. It will be undoubtedly sold out in a matter of days, which is why if you are planning to get a ticket, you should do so in the soonest time possible.

Meanwhile, the recently released press release states that the upcoming world concert tour is happening in order to let his fans know how glamorous G-Dragon's life and career has been, thanks to their full support. Reports also have it that tickets for the North American tour will start to be sold this coming May 5 on Live Nation.

Hopefully, the upcoming world concert tour, "M.O.T.T.E." of G-Dragon will be a huge success. Let's wish G-Dragon the best of luck.

G-Dragon’s World Tour Marks the End of an Era in K-Pop

g dragon world tour 2017

By all accounts, G-Dragon’s performance last Thursday at the Barclays Center was his last one in New York for a while. Once his world tour, Act III: M.O.T.T.E. (which sounds like the Korean word for womb and is also an acronym for Moment of Truth the End), finishes in the fall he’s due for Korean boy-band heaven, a.k.a. mandatory military service, a roughly two-year requirement that not even millions of screaming fans can get you out of. The two-year conscription has effectively killed many music careers (RIP Rain), because the Korean music machine crunches onward without you, and there’s always someone younger, shinier, and better coordinated waiting in the wings. So for almost two hours, G-Dragon rapped, caterwauled, and crooned his way through his past three solo albums, including his latest, Kwon Ji Yong — his given name — to give his New York audience a farewell. It was both an opportunity to say good-bye and a chance to stake out his legacy beyond the one that made him famous: his debut with the boy band Big Bang back in 2006.

Pop music crystallizes time and place, so when I think about G-Dragon, I remember the first time I moved to Seoul in the summer of 2008. Big Bang had just released “Haru Haru” (“Day by Day”), the undisputed song of summer — and as I can now attest, decade. The song was everywhere, from speakers outside of beauty shops on the street to variety shows on TV, to late-night karaoke sessions where it was a requirement that I, at the very least, sing the chorus. I was new, but I was no fool. The lyrics, written by G-Dragon, about the pain of letting someone you love go aren’t exactly groundbreaking stuff, it was more the sound — a mix of dance and rap and ballad that leveraged the strengths of all five members and became one of their signatures. What was once innovative has since been copied and standardized to the point where almost every boy band now has a charismatic rapper with a booming voice.

The music video had a plot fit for Korean dramatic sensibilities: The protagonist (played by G-Dragon) believes his girlfriend is cheating on him with his friend (played by fellow rapper T.O.P.). Of course, the twist is that they were only pretending to cheat because she was dying and wanted to spare her love the pain of watching her die. (Just go with it.) G-Dragon learns of this too late and arrives at the hospital to an already-gone girl. It was stupid and dramatic and I loved it.

More importantly, “Haru Haru” launched Big Bang into the canon of Korean pop music and proved that they were more than one-hit wonders. When they debuted in 2006, Big Bang struggled to find their groove, coming up with a No. 1 hit a whole year later — eons in K-pop time — with the song “Lies.” (This also has a dramatic — and arguably superior — music video). But “Haru Haru” tapped into the Zeitgeist, blending a deep affinity for torch songs with the swagger of hip-hop, and set a wildfire to the K-pop fandom. The song is now regarded as one of the most influential to come out of Korean pop music, but maybe more saliently, it gave Big Bang — and its ringleader G-Dragon — a wider berth to become stranger, more exploratory, and idiosyncratic.

By the time GD&TOP , a collaboration between G-Dragon and T.O.P., came out on Christmas Eve of 2010, G-Dragon had fully come into his own. The album skips around genres effortlessly: Synth club bangers like “High High” and “Oh Yeah” sit next to an effortlessly cool, Diplo-produced track called “Knockout,” and a bright and cheeky pop song “Don’t Go Home” — the latter two were censored by Korean broadcasters for lewd content.

More and more, G-Dragon was embracing the aesthetic mélange that’s inherent to K-pop’s DNA. Rather than get buffeted by South Korea’s rapidly shifting fashion winds, he was a master and commander who existed in a near future where every color was psychedelic and gender didn’t matter. Trends? G-Dragon blended them up and ate them for breakfast. His hair has been every shade of highlighter, he was into giant fur aviator hats for a while, and in an especially iconic moment, he appeared on the cover of Vogue Korea with long blond hair, looking like an androgynous model.

The best example of his chameleonic power is “Crayon,” from his 2012 album, One of a Kind . It demonstrated his ability to metabolize pop culture and fashion on a global scale and reform it into his own aesthetic. The single and the accompanying music video are full of jokes, from the “Giyongchy” beanie as a nod to Korea’s burgeoning fast-fashion industry, to the Joker in The Dark Knight , to the song title itself, where he asks you to “get your cray on.” He uses the full palette of the rainbow, too, opening with a popping pink Wonder Woman robe before moving to jackets in holographic gold and Thom Browne’s 2012 fall collection with its fun-house proportions . He also appears in drag, because why are we taking any of this so seriously?

I loved how weird G-Dragon was. I liked that he didn’t feel that he had to bend to popular pressure to get swole the way other boy bands — like 2PM , 2AM , and DBSK (Dong Bang Shin Ki) — did. Even now, he’s as skinny as ever, and despite his relative size, his aesthetics are defined by excess. He is too much, all the time. There are too many references and ideas, colors and shapes — yet on him, they feel just right. Where there’s a constricted idea of masculinity in society, G-Dragon exploded the paradigm for how a man could be. He was like Prince, only less interested in making his body a sexual object. In G-Dragon’s world, fashion could be fun, playful, and joyful, rather than exacting and serious. Clothes could be an expression of your core identity, or they could just be something you’re trying out — a mood, a whim, or an idea. He was postmodern in the best sense of the word. He proved that you could, in some way, be anything and everything, and for someone coming to Korea from America by way of Florida, this was an absolutely breathtaking way to exist.

I don’t mean to talk about him in the past tense. G-Dragon is still alive and kicking; he’s just going to the military. And yet, even onstage at Barclays, he knew that this was the end of an era. Toward the end of the show, he played a meandering five-minute video monologue. It was a confessional filmed as though he was in between wardrobe changes; he was wearing a shiny, red bathrobe that he fidgeted with as he explained, haltingly, that he wasn’t sure exactly who he was, but that he wanted to be known as himself, rather than simply his onstage persona. “I am always trying to look good when I dress up as GD, like this,” he said. “But the reality is sometimes it feels too heavy on me. Still, I feel like I’ll be embarrassed if I take it off.”

This, too, was a performance. But there was something touching about the artifice, the self-constructed gestures and affected American accent that made it feel like something true — an attempt to remind people that G-Dragon was more than the sum of the past decade. What he was saying was that he wants to avoid the fate of other former boy-band idols whose careers faded away after their two-year military hiatus, and establish himself as an artist for a lifetime. At the end of his 22-song set list, he sang “ Untitled, 2014 ” — a simple, pared-down track about wanting to get someone back because a love like that just doesn’t come around twice. A red baseball cap shaded his eyes when he told the audience, in English, “You guys really get me.” I really felt like I did.
