Study Abroad

Carnegie Mellon Architecture encourages study abroad experiences for students for the valuable perspective gained through immersion in another culture and language.

Study abroad enables students to be exposed to architectural subjects beyond Carnegie Mellon, allowing them the opportunity to study architecture directly in an indigenous context. Visit the Office of International Education (OIE) for more information about studying abroad. Students planning to study abroad must apply through both the Carnegie Mellon Architecture office and OIE for non-CMU programs. Students studying abroad during the spring semester must apply in October of the previous year.

Study abroad can happen in a number of ways:

  • Summer study abroad studios in which a course is taught by Carnegie Mellon Architecture faculty.
  • Exchange programs between Carnegie Mellon Architecture and another school. These can be one semester or a full academic year in duration.
  • Programs sponsored by Carnegie Mellon where students pay their regular tuition plus room and board and retain their eligibility for financial aid.
  • Independent study abroad programs occurring in the second semester of a B.Arch student's fourth year.

Carnegie Mellon Architecture students have attended study abroad programs in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Chile, China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, England, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latvia, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore, Spain and Switzerland.

Study Abroad

The School of Design wants students to experience the world. By offering both a foreign exchange program (in which design students from around the world join us here in Pittsburgh) and a study-abroad program (that allows our undergraduates to live and study fully immersed in different cultures) we seek to broaden the range of our students’ experiences.

We encourage School of Design undergraduates to explore study abroad options in their junior year. We have formal exchange agreements with many institutions (listed below), and we know that the courses they offer complement ours.

Carnegie Mellon University maintains an extensive range of contacts with overseas institutions. Please visit Office of International Education’s Study Abroad for more information. The university was recently awarded the U.S. Senator Paul Simon Award for excellence in international initiatives, reflecting our position as one of the world’s top-tier global universities, and recognizing the university’s accomplishments in preparing students to address society's most pressing challenges.

Getting Started

The first step is to meet with your Academic Advisor, to review your current course units and establish basic eligibility for study abroad. You can then proceed with applications. Please note that to be considered for study abroad, you must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, demonstrate proficiency in design, and be readily adaptable to living abroad.

Requirements

Most of your study abroad application will be negotiated with your host institution, but you must submit the following materials to the School of Design:

  • A statement of intent outlining your motivation for studying abroad, a description of your intended host institution, and your planned dates of study. Please indicate whether you have already been accepted by the host institution (or whether your application is still pending) and when you anticipate receiving notification.
  • Detailed contact information and URLs for the host institution and program
  • A list of courses you propose to take at the host institution, with a parallel list of School of Design courses that these courses would replace

All applications should be submitted to Jamie Kosnosky . A committee of faculty members will review applications and email you about the approval of your proposal

For study abroad in your:

  • Fall junior semester : application materials are due April 1 of your sophomore year
  • Spring junior semester : application materials are due November 1 of your junior year

Please note that these are deadlines for the School of Design only. Your host institution may have different deadlines or timeframes. Meeting these is your responsibility.

Once your application is approved, you must meet with your Academic Advisor to ensure your courses abroad will be credited to your degree requirements without any change to your program completion date. You must also attend an OIE pre-departure orientation and submit a Study Abroad Transfer Credit Form before departure. (OIE will issue this form and several others at your orientation.) When you return from study abroad, you will be required to summarize your experience in two formats:

  • A written summary of approximately 2,000 words, with images, for faculty review and archiving
  • A 10-minute visual and verbal presentation open to School of Design faculty and staff

Design students always have the option to find a compatible program in which they would like to study. With this option, students apply directly to the outside school; all tuition and host university fees are the responsibility of the student. Design programs that have hosted our students in the past are:

  • Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts (Krakow, Poland)
  • Parsons Paris (Paris, France)
  • University of New South Wales (Syndey, Australia)
  • University of the Arts (London, England)
  • Central St. Martins College of Art and Design (London, England)
  • Danish Institute for Study Abroad (Copenhagen, Denmark)
  • Design Academy (Eindhoven, The Netherlands)
  • Domus Academy (Milan, Italy)
  • Accademia Italiana (Florence, Italy)

If you identify a potential host institution other than one of our three exchange partners, it's important that you notify the School of Design several months in advance so that we can determine whether the curriculum complements ours. Not every academic institution is a good fit, and we discourage students from making choices based on geography alone. Your School of Design academic advisor or faculty members are available to counsel you in making the right choice for your course of study.

Summer Programs

Students can also make arrangements to study abroad during the summer months, for example, at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad . Summer study-abroad programs are an excellent way to explore a wide range of courses and cultures over a shorter period of time. Design students are not required to obtain permission for summer programs unless they are requesting transfer credit. Students who request transfer credit must submit a proposal to the faculty head for their major and attend a pre-departure orientation sponsored by the university’s Office of International Education .

As science, engineering technology and industrial enterprises continue to globalize, it is increasingly important for students to learn about other cultures and experience what it's like working in different societies. Engineers of the future will interact with, work with, and collaborate with engineers from around the world. Furthermore, most engineers will have to travel for work or may receive career opportunities in other countries. To help prepare our students for this future, we have created several foreign exchange programs, providing the opportunity to experience life and engineering around the globe.

Imperial College, London, England

  • Select Internship/Co-op for the job category and US as the Country/Region.
  • Be sure to mention your interest in the Imperial exchange program to the P&G pre-recruiters visiting campus.

Air Products & Chemicals and Procter & Gamble will consider interviewing students for a summer internship before or after going to London. They are interested in students who get training in the US and the UK. The possible internship with Procter & Gamble is in two parts. The first is in the summer prior to the year in London and takes place in Cincinnati. The second part is in the London research facilities at Procter and Gamble at the end of the one-year stay in London.

The Imperial College exchange program has similar arrangements to the exchange program at RWTH Aachen. Students pay regular fees to Carnegie Mellon. Housing costs are about £550 per month, and food costs about £300 per month. Classes start early in October. Imperial College is located in a prime location in central London, South Kensington, next to Hyde Park.

The courses that Chemical Engineering students take at Imperial University are nearly equivalent to those students would take in their junior year at Carnegie Mellon.

RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany

  • Basic knowledge of German language is required for this program.
  • Notify  Nora Siewiorek  of your interest in the program by the first Friday after returning from winter break.

Carnegie Mellon started an exchange program with  RWTH Aachen University  (Germany) in September of 1995. Fanti Named Angel Jordan Associate Professor

  • kristab(through)cmu.edu

The College of Engineering has announced the most recent faculty member to receive a professorship. As the highest academic award a university can bestow on a faculty member, professorships are reserved for those who show continued contributions in their field.

Professorships are established to support a particular faculty member or a field of research, both of which are critical to maintaining world-class quality education and research. Contributions help faculty members pursue a specific field of study, provide funding for graduate student involvement, purchase equipment, or travel to share their research.

With the approval of Provost Garrett,  Giulia Fanti  has been named the new Angel Jordan Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, effective July 1, 2024. Fanti’s research is in the design and engineering of systems that enable cooperation in the absence of trust. Her scholarly impact stems from distilling complex, real-world challenges into core problems in her individual technical disciplines. For example, her work on privacy in social networks led to a new probabilistic formulation of rumor source obfuscation, which complemented the growing field of epidemic source detection in the performance modeling community. This work won a best paper award at ACM SIGMETRICS 2015. Similarly, her interest in the very pragmatic problem of information sharing has led her to explore generative adversarial networks (GANs) as a tool for generating synthetic data. Fanti is also a founding co-director of the CyLab-Africa initiative, which focuses on the security and resilience of Africa’s financial technologies and infrastructure.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering created the Angel Jordan Professorship to honor and celebrate the undeniable impact that Angel Jordan (former ECE professor, CIT Dean, and University Provost) had on Carnegie Mellon and the College of Engineering. Throughout his career, Angel Jordan helped transform Carnegie Mellon into a world-class educational and research institution. He not only conducted research on semi-conductors, integrated circuits, thin films, intelligent sensors, robotics, automation, and software engineering, but he also helped form Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science, the Robotics Institute, and the Software Engineering Institute. Overall, Jordan has made countless contributions to the science and engineering fields while also devoting his career to advancing academic excellence and technology at Carnegie Mellon.

Benefits include international medical, evacuation, and repatriation insurance, online health, safety, and security orientation, 24/7 emergency communication services, and enrollment in the U.S. State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).

It is recommended to visit a travel clinic or a doctor familiar with travel medicine at least four to six weeks before your trip. Additionally, the university's international travel may not include country-specific compulsory auto insurance, so you may need to purchase additional coverage.

CU Boulder has an Education Abroad website that provides information on travel and safety. You can also refer to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers, and the World Health Organization for additional resources.
