Fans share how much it really costs to be a Disney adult and go to the theme parks.

How Much It Costs To Be A Disney Adult

All it takes is faith, trust, and a well-planned budget.

Disneyland may be the “happiest place on Earth,” but it comes with a $$$ price tag. One-day, one-park tickets to the California attraction start at $104; the same ticket type for Walt Disney World in Florida starts at $109 — and that’s just the entrance fee. When you have to add on things like parking, sequined Minnie Mouse ears, Mickey Mouse-shaped pretzels , and hotel accommodations, you’re easily looking at more than $500 for the visit.

The parks aren’t the only areas where Disney adults spend money either. There are movies, collectibles, and even sea experiences to consider. I just got off a 10-night Disney Wonder cruise from Hawaii that was roughly $4,450 per person. While the cruises are all-inclusive (and I swear I ate enough from the buffet to justify the price), there are additional expenses to factor in, like port adventures, cocktails, and even spa services.

My total Disney budget for the year is close to what some Swifties have been spending on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

That Hawaiian trip may have been something off my travel bucket list, but that’s not the only Disney expense I plan to make this year. With D23 Expo in August, a few trips back home to Florida on the cal, as well as some Halloween plans in the mix, my total Disney budget for the year is close to what some Swifties have been spending on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour .

Of course, I’m just one of many Disney fanatics who enjoy eating churros in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle and watching Pixar films on opening weekend. In the as-told-tos below, four other Disney adults dish on how much they spent on their fandom in one year.

I Went To The Eras Tour & Disneyland In 1 Trip

I’ve been a Disney fan my whole life. Last year alone, I spent over $4,000 on two trips to Disneyland, plus a Disney+ subscription ($135).

The first trip was in August: I went to Los Angeles to see the Taylor Swift Eras Tour concert , so I planned two days at the Anaheim parks. At the time, I had a flight credit, which made it cheaper, but I still spent about $400 on flying round-trip.

Our tickets with the Genie+ add-on — which allows us to skip the standby line for certain rides throughout the day — were about $530, merch was $95, and food at the parks and grocery stores nearby was $90. Staying with a friend in San Bernardino brought the cost of accommodations to $0. Rental car and gas, though? $690.

Disney fans share how much they spent on their vacations last year.

My second trip to LA, in October during the Halloween festivities, was a little more expensive. It was a surprise trip for my partner's birthday.

Out of everything Disney I spent money on, the tickets to the theme park were the most expensive.

Our two one-day tickets to Disneyland were $730 with Genie+, in addition to our hotel ($569), flights ($500), food ($200), and rental car ($384). I also got us matching outfits to wear to the park, which were $80 (but totally necessary, IMO).

Out of everything Disney I spent money on, the tickets to the theme park were the most expensive; they were actually more than our hotels and flights for two people — but it was so worth it for us. Experiencing the Eras Tour around the same time was like a two-for-one deal, and surprising my partner for his special day was a great gift he super appreciated.

After going to Disneyland twice in 2023, I’m hoping I don’t spend more money on the House of Mouse this year. I don't want to go back to the parks for several years — just to spare my wallet. —Clinton, 29, Vancouver, BC

I Spent $8K Going To Disney World With My Annual Pass

I was a casual Disney fan growing up. My parents took my older brothers and me there three to four times as kids. I actually didn’t go as an adult until I saw the “Disney day trip challenge” on TikTok in 2021, and I decided to do it purely for the bit.

I took a 5 a.m. flight from Philly to Orlando, went to all four theme parks at Walt Disney World, and then took a 9 p.m. flight home the same day. I became hooked, and now, I’m a Disney Annual Passholder.

A Disney adult shares how much they spent as an annual passholder at Disney World last year.

I live in New Jersey, and while I always fly budget airlines, I spent roughly $1,000 on airfare for six trips. My Disney Incredi-Pass costs about $1,700 ($1,449 before tax), which includes the Memory Maker PhotoPass, where you can download all the park pics from your vacation. We love.

Over my six trips last year, I was at Disney World for 18 nights total. Hotels for those days were about $2,700; that was probably the biggest expense, since I always choose to stay on Disney property.

Everyone has those things that they choose to spend money on that other people see as a waste. For me, it’s Disney.

The rest of my budget was used for food, Ubers, outfits, and merch. People don’t realize what a foodie paradise Disney can be . On our last trip to Epcot, I got a sushi doughnut and it was fantastic.

I also like to collect pins from the park. Pin trading is a great activity to do while you’re there and is relatively cheap if you buy bulk pins from a store like eBay.

A Disney fan shares the fireworks dessert parties are a splurge they'd like to spend money on one da...

I don’t regret any of the money I spent on Disney. There are even splurges I want to try in the future, like a fireworks dessert party , but that’s something I’ll need to save up for and do on a special occasion.

I think that everyone has those things that they choose to spend money on that other people see as a waste. For me, it’s Disney. I understand that it’s expensive, and there is no way to get around it, but it’s so worth it. —Kelly, 29, Long Branch, NJ

My Fiancé Proposed To Me In Front Of Cinderella Castle

I’ve always loved Disney. I had the chance to visit Disney World for the first time when I was 3, and have probably visited the parks every year since. Though I don’t have an exact number, I spent somewhere between $20,000 and $30,000 on Disney last year.

A breakdown of that includes $3,500 on tickets to the parks, $200 on PhotoPass packages, $200 on our MagicBands , $450 on Genie+, $1,000 on outfits for park days, and $2,000 for food.

A Disney fan shares their favorite memory of being a fan is getting proposed to in front of Cinderel...

One of the biggest categories for me is merch. I like to collect Loungefly bags, Starbucks tumblers , popcorn buckets from the park... there are no limits. My fiancé and I often have to purchase more bags and luggage to bring all the merch back home. Last year alone, I think I spent at least $5,000 on souvenirs.

Since I’m from Canada, I also spent money on hotels ($4,700), airfare ($3,600), car rentals ($1,200), and Ubers and buses at Disney ($400). Though that may seem like a lot, it was all 100% worth it.

We do try to have a budget for how much we spend in the park, but the truth is we often forget about it.

I have no regrets about my trips to Disney, because my fiancé and I get to create so many amazing memories together, like when he proposed to me in front of the castle in Magic Kingdom on my 24th birthday.

We do try to have a budget for how much we spend in the park, but we often forget about it. Each year, we try to go to Disney at least once, but we don’t really plan our vacations too far in advance. If we want to go next week, we’ll go. So if we continue on this path, we’ll likely spend more this year because Disney raises their prices every year. —Megan, 24, Montreal, Québec

I Save Money By Staying At One Of The Value Resorts

Since my family has been Annual Passholders since I was a kid, I’ve been a Disney fan for as long as I can remember. My love for Disney has even grown more as an adult, because I can appreciate all the work and imagination that goes into making it so magical for people of all ages. I even had my bachelorette party at Disney .

Now my family visits Walt Disney World about six to eight times a year. In 2023, I spent $3,000 for our annual passes and tickets for special events, $6,000 on Disney resort stays, and about another $3,000 on meals, snacks, and merch.

Staying at a value resort like Disney's Pop Century Resort is a way to save money on your next vacat...

The biggest expense was the annual passes, but since we visit so often, they were absolutely worth it. I’ll probably spend the same amount on Disney this year.

If you’re looking for an area to save money, though, I would suggest staying at one of Disney’s value resorts, like any of the All-Star resorts or the Pop Century Resort. My family only splurges on a deluxe resort around Christmas. The Wilderness Lodge is our favorite during the holidays. —Jennifer, 25, Boynton Beach, FL

Total: $12,000

I Get Buy With A Little Help From My Fam (& Work Perks)

I first went to a Disney park when I was 6. It was Disneyland Paris and I was hooked from there. We had always watched the movies as a family before this, but being *in* the magic definitely took our fandom to another level. I will always be more of a parks girl.

Disneyland Park, at Disneyland Paris, is where one fan began their love of Disney.

My parents often pay for our family trips to the parks and I’ve been fortunate enough to go to Disney World and Hong Kong Disneyland recently for work, which is taken care of as well. Last year, I even got to experience the $5,000-per-person Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience before it closed, and visited the World of Frozen ($82 for a one-day ticket) before its opening.

Even though most expenses I don’t have to worry about, when I’m there, I spend my own money on merch and food. My boyfriend and I are avid watchers of Disney Food Blog and generally make it our mission to try the new and limited-edition snacks available during a trip.

I racked up at least $250 in pin purchases and meals.

The variety of restaurants at Disney World especially will make this a reasonable expenditure for me. Many meals — like the ones at California Grill, Wine Bar George, and Morimoto Asia — are some of the best I've ever had, both in and out of Disney.

I also collect pins. The last three or so trips I went on in 2023, I racked up at least $250 in pin purchases and meals. The average cost of a pin post-tax is $15-$20, and I net around 15 new pins per trip.

One Disney fan spends money on their pin collection and other merch in the parks.

I currently don't have any trips planned to Disney this year, which will cut my spending significantly. That said, it is only May. —Charlie, 29, United Kingdom

Five things to check before taking your car on a road trip, from Holman car experts

don trip merch

If you're planning to hit the open road this summer, don't forget to make sure your car is up to the task.

After all, winter is not known for being easy on vehicles. Between the cold, ice, potholes, road treatments and more, car experts at Holman say a spring service check is key to keeping your ride road-worthy.

The automotive company, headquartered in Mount Laurel, says there are five essential maintenance checks every owner should complete before taking off on an adventure.

Correct alignment

"A vehicle’s tire alignment is essential for proper handling and maximum tire life. It ensures tires roll straight and make proper contact with the road, improving the vehicle’s overall performance and drive quality. A misaligned vehicle, on the other hand, causes uneven tire wear, poor vehicle handling, and, in some cases, reduces fuel economy," Holman says.

You should watch out for uneven tire wear, a vibrating steering wheel or the vehicle pulling to one side.

What to see on the road: Lucy the Elephant voted top roadside attraction in United States in USA TODAY poll

“Regular alignment checks are crucial, especially after the winter,” said Frank Carbone, senior vice president of automotive at Holman. “By addressing alignment issues promptly, drivers not only save their tires, but also improve their overall driving experience.”

Tire pressure

Drops in temperature over the winter cause the air in tires to contract, which reduces tire pressure, according to Holman. With lower pressure, there is more resistance between the tires and road, which leads to tire wear. On the other hand, increased pressure as the temperature rises can lead to overinflation.

These issues can lead to punctures, blowouts and flat tires.

Even with modern tire pressure monitors, it's a good idea to check tires manually periodically, according to Holman.

"Brake systems are not just about stopping the vehicle, but doing so in a controlled and safe manner,” Carbone explained. “Ensuring your brakes are checked regularly can be the difference between a near-miss and a collision. And with heavier vehicles, such as EVs, the importance of timely brake maintenance can’t be overstated."

According to Holman, most manufacturers recommend replacing brake pads once they wear down to 1/8" of thickness. EV brakes and tires should be inspected and replaced more frequently.

Cold temperatures put a strain on car batteries.

Usually, the lifespan of a gas-powered car's battery is between three and five years. Mechanics should check the battery whenever a vehicle is serviced.

For electric vehicles, cold temperatures also matter.

"Low temperatures reduce the chemical activity within lithium-ion batteries, which decreases their capacity and efficiency. To maintain the efficiency of EV batteries in winter, drivers should warm up their vehicle’s battery and interior before charging and keep it parked in a garage, if they can," Holman says.

High temperatures can lead to overheating of EV batteries. Drivers should park in the shade and consider charging during cooler periods.

Cold temperatures can make windshields more brittle, which increases the risk of cracks and chips from flying debris.

Any cracks or chips should be repaired before they spread.

Holman says drivers should also check their wiper blades, which should be replaced every 6 to 12 months.

Trump Has Been Convicted. Here’s What Happens Next.

Donald J. Trump has promised to appeal, but he may face limits on his ability to travel and to vote as he campaigns for the White House.

  • Share full article

Donald J. Trump in a dark suit, red tie and white shirt.

By Jesse McKinley and Maggie Astor

  • May 30, 2024

The conviction of former President Donald J. Trump on Thursday is just the latest step in his legal odyssey in New York’s court system. The judge, Juan M. Merchan, set Mr. Trump’s sentencing for July 11, at which point he could be sentenced to as much as four years behind bars, or to probation.

It won’t stop him from running for president, though: There is no legal prohibition on felons doing that . No constitutional provision would stop him even from serving as president from a prison cell, though in practice that would trigger a crisis that courts would almost certainly have to resolve.

His ability to vote — for himself, presumably — depends on whether he is sentenced to prison. Florida, where he is registered, requires felons convicted there to complete their full sentence, including parole or probation, before regaining voting rights. But when Floridians are convicted in another state, Florida defers to the laws of that state, and New York disenfranchises felons only while they are in prison.

The Trump Manhattan Criminal Verdict, Count By Count

Former President Donald J. Trump faced 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, related to the reimbursement of hush money paid to the porn star Stormy Daniels in order to cover up a sex scandal around the 2016 presidential election.

“Because Florida recognizes voting rights restoration in the state of conviction, and because New York’s law states that those with a felony conviction do not lose their right to vote unless they are incarcerated during the election, then Trump will not lose his right to vote in this case unless he is in prison on Election Day,” said Blair Bowie, a lawyer at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit watchdog group.

Mr. Trump will almost certainly appeal his conviction, after months of criticizing the case and attacking the Manhattan district attorney, who brought it, and Justice Merchan, who presided over his trial.

Long before that appeal is heard, however, Mr. Trump will be enmeshed in the gears of the criminal justice system.

A pre-sentencing report makes recommendations based on the defendant’s criminal record — Mr. Trump had none before this case — as well as his personal history and the crime itself. The former president was found guilty of falsifying business records in relation to a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, a porn star who says she had a brief sexual tryst with Mr. Trump in 2006, in order to buy her silence.

At the pre-sentence interview, a psychologist or social worker working for the probation department may also talk to Mr. Trump, during which time the defendant can “try to make a good impression and explain why he or she deserves a lighter punishment,” according to the New York State Unified Court System.

The pre-sentencing report can also include submissions from the defense, and may describe whether “the defendant is in a counseling program or has a steady job.”

In Mr. Trump’s case, of course, he is applying — as it were — for a steady job as president of the United States, a campaign that may be complicated by his new status as a felon. Mr. Trump will likely be required to regularly report to a probation officer, and rules on travel could be imposed.

Mr. Trump was convicted of 34 Class E felonies, New York’s lowest level , each of which carry a potential penalty of up to four years in prison. Probation or home confinement are other possibilities that Justice Merchan can consider.

That said, Justice Merchan has indicated in the past that he takes white-collar crime seriously . If he did impose prison time, he would likely impose the punishment concurrently, meaning that Mr. Trump would serve time on each of the counts he was convicted of simultaneously.

If Mr. Trump were instead sentenced to probation, he could still be jailed if he were later found to have committed additional crimes. Mr. Trump, 77, currently faces three other criminal cases: two federal, dealing with his handling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election , and a state case in Georgia that concerns election interference.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers can file a notice of appeal after sentencing, scheduled for July 11 at 10 a.m. And the judge could stay any punishment during an appeal, something that could delay punishment beyond Election Day.

The proceedings will continue even if he wins: Because it’s a state case, not federal, Mr. Trump would have no power as president to pardon himself .

What Tucker Carlson Saw in Moscow

He never quite says what precisely he thinks Russia gets right.

Tucker Carlson in Russian supermarket

Listen to this article

Produced by ElevenLabs and News Over Audio (NOA) using AI narration.

Tucker Carlson went to Moscow last week and had an absolute blast. He rode the subway and marveled at its clean cars, the fancy tilework in Kievskaya Station, and the lack of booze-drenched hobos. He went to a grocery store and was astonished by what ordinary people could apparently buy. He even managed to meet a local history buff and sit down for tea and conversation. Carlson, who had never previously visited Moscow, declared himself “radicalized” against America’s leaders by the experience. He didn’t want to live in Moscow, but he did want to know why we in America have to put up with street crime and crappy food when the supposedly bankrupt Russia provided such a nice life for its people, or at least those people not named Alexei Navalny .

My former Atlantic colleague Ralph Waldo Emerson called travel a “fool’s paradise,” but not all forms of foolishness are equal. Many commentators have guffawed at Carlson’s Russophilia and pointed out that Russia’s murder rate is roughly that of the United States, and that its citizens are dirt poor, about a fifth as wealthy per capita as the citizens of the United States overall. “I don’t care what some flagship supermarket in an imperial city looks like,” The Dispatch ’s Jonah Goldberg tweeted. “Russia is far, far poorer than our poorest state, Mississippi.” Bloomberg ’s Joe Weisenthal suggested that Carlson instead visit the grocery stores of the “10th or 50th” richest Russian cities, and see how they compare with America’s.

In 2019, I visited several large and small Russian cities, and I went grocery shopping at least once in each. Would you believe that Tucker Carlson is on to something? In Moscow (the largest) and St. Petersburg (No. 2), the flagship supermarkets are indeed spectacular. The Azbuka Vkusa branch next to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow is more luxurious than any grocery store within 100 miles of Washington, D.C. Other branches in Moscow vary in quality, and they are usually smaller than American supermarkets. But to some extent that’s just a matter of culture: The U.S. has fewer supermarkets, but each one is big enough to feed the 82nd Airborne Division for a month; in Europe, supermarkets are more numerous but tiny.

Anne Applebaum: The false romance of Russia

Makhachkala (22), the capital of Dagestan, followed a similar pattern to Moscow. One supermarket downtown was amazing, the equal of an upscale supermarket in Washington or Dallas. On the outskirts the quality varied, but not drastically. Local residents were not eating soups made from grass clippings. In Murmansk (71), the cramped bodega near my rented flat had a good wine selection and enough fresh staple foods to prepare a different meal your mom would approve of every day of the week. Only in Derbent (134) did I start to wonder whether the bad old days of the Soviet Union were still in effect. But even that would be an exaggeration. In Derbent, for $15, you could get champagne and caviar with blini and velvety sour cream. If you want to flash back to Cold War communism, go to Havana. There the grocery stores stock only dust and mildew.

With apologies to Emerson, travel can disabuse you of foolish notions just as often as it plants them in your head. An idea ripe for dispelling among Americans at this particular moment is that life in Russia must suck because the frigid depression of the Cold War never ended. In those days ordinary citizens were spied upon and tortured and killed, and the shops were empty, save for substandard goods at prices few could afford. Now Russia is different. The state repression is much more limited, though no less brutal toward those who attract its attention. Until the Ukraine war added a huge category of forbidden topics, the main ones that you could get locked up for discussing were war in the Caucasus and the personal life and finances of President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle. Most other topics were broachable, and you could whine all you liked about them.

Equally in need of updating are American expectations about Russian economic misery. Those whose visits to Russia stopped 20 years ago tend to have outdated views of the best the country has to offer. My visits started 24 years ago. Back then, I spent days at a time on the Trans-Siberian, crammed into railway cabins with little to do but talk with Russians and see how they lived. Life was not beautiful. The men busied themselves with crosswords and sullenly browsed pornography. When not in motion, I stayed with Russian friends in single-room flats that looked straight out of a New York tenement building 100 years ago. No one I met was starving, but women sometimes approached me in train stations hoping to rent out their homes or bodies, or to sell me family heirlooms. That type of desperation seems to have subsided, although I would be shocked if any of those people are able to buy the jamón ibérico at the Smolenskaya branch of Azbuka Vkusa yet. On the roads between the big cities, there are still villages so ramshackle that they look like sets from The Little Rascals . Evidence suggests that the Russian military’s frontline troops tend to come from these depressed and benighted lands, the places that really are stuck in the 20th century.

Certain aspects of life remain dismal even in the cities. My flat in Murmansk had surly drunks tottering outside its entrance, and its stairwell smelled like every cat, dog, and human resident had marked its territory there regularly since the Brezhnev era. But the playgrounds were decent, and you could get a delicious smoked-reindeer pizza at a cozy restaurant for $7. Remember, this is in a small, depressed Russian city—not somewhere stocked with goodies just in case an American wanders out of the lobby of the Radisson and needs to be impressed. The “useful idiots” of yesteryear were treated to fake Moscows, which evanesced as soon as the next Aeroflot flights took off. The luxuries of Moscow that Carlson sees, and that I saw, are not evanescent, and they are not (as they are in North Korea, say) a curated experience available only to those on controlled visits.

The stubborn belief that all good things in Russia must be illusory can in turn warp one’s analysis of the country, and in particular of Putin’s durability in power. After all, why would anyone remain loyal to an autocrat who delivered only hunger, penury, and the reek of cat piss? Putin rules by fear but not only by fear. Most Russians will tell you that Russia today is better than it was before Putin. They compare it not with the Soviet era but with the anarchy and decline of the 1990s. Life expectancy has risen, public parks are better maintained, and certain fruits of capitalism can be tasted by Russians of all classes. Who would risk these gains? Like every autocrat, Putin has ensured that his downfall just might destroy every good thing Russia has experienced in the past two decades. This risk is, from the perspective of regime continuity, a positive feature, because it keeps all but the most principled and brave opposition quiet, and content to shut up and enjoy their cheap caviar. Those like Navalny who object do not object for long.

Carlson’s videos never quite say what precisely he thinks Russia gets right. Moscow is in many ways superior to New York. But Paris has a good subway system too. Japan and Thailand have fine grocery stores, and I wonder, when I enter them, why entering my neighborhood Stop & Shop in America is such a depressing experience by comparison. Carlson’s stated preference for Putin’s leadership over Joe Biden’s suggests that the affection is not for fine food or working public transit but for firm autocratic rule—which, as French, Thais, and Japanese will attest, is not a precondition for high-quality goods and services. And in an authoritarian state, those goods and services can serve to prolong the regime.

I confess I still enjoy watching Carlson post videos of Moscow, wide-eyed and credulous as he slowly learns to love a country that I love too. I hope he posts more of them. One goes through stages of love for Russia, often starting with the literature and music, then moving to its dark humor and the personalities of its people, which are always cycling between thaw and frost. Inevitably one reflects on the irony that this civilization, whose achievement is almost without equal in some respects, is utterly cursed in others—consigned to literally centuries of misgovernment, incompetence, and tyranny. The final stage is realizing that the greatness of Russia is part of the curse, a heightening of the irony, as if no matter how much goes right, something is deeply wrong. Maybe when things go right, the more deeply wrong it is. Carlson seems to still be in one of the early stages of this journey.

Trump campaign doubles previous one-day record fundraising haul after guilty verdict

Former President Donald Trump's campaign says it raised a whopping $34.8 million in small dollar donations after he was convicted Thursday on 34 felony counts in Manhattan.

The campaign said the Thursday haul was "the biggest day ever recorded" for Trump's vaunted small-dollar fundraising operation on the WinRed platform, nearly doubling the previous high. The WinRed website temporarily crashed from the overwhelming traffic.

In a statement Friday morning, senior campaign advisers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita said that within minutes of the verdict "our digital fundraising system was overwhelmed with support, and despite temporary delays online because of the amount of traffic, President Trump raised $34.8 million dollars from small dollar donors."

"Not only was the amount historic, but 29.7% of yesterday's donor's were brand new donors to the WinRed platform," the statement added.

Trump was found guilty in New York state court of falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments to a porn star to conceal an alleged affair. He was found to have done so to hide another crime, such as a campaign finance law violation or a tax code violation, making the charges felonies. He will be sentenced on July 11 and he could face probation, community service or a short jail stint.

An aggressive Trump campaign effort to capitalize on the conviction

Trump’s campaign texted supporters at least five times asking them to donate and sharing a link to a WinRed page that called Trump a “political prisoner,” framed his conviction as a “witch hunt,” and included a copy of his mugshot from an unrelated case in Atlanta, Georgia. The page asked 10 million people to donate.

Additionally, dozens of Trump's allies shared the same link to the WinRed page on X, formerly known as Twitter. They include Republican Sens. Katie Britt of Alabama, Marco Rubio of Florida, J.D. Vance of Ohio, Tim Scott of South Carolina and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee. Reps. Elise Stefanik of New York, Byron Donalds of Florida and Steve Scalise of Louisiana also shared.

More: 'Speechless': Swing state voters react to Donald Trump's guilty verdict

Trump’s campaign wrote on Truth Social less than an hour after the verdict was announced, “So many Americans were moved to donate to President Trump’s campaign that the WinRed pages went down. "We are working on getting the website back online as quickly as possible.”

USA TODAY's inquiry to WinRed was not immediately returned.

Small-dollar donations often can be a measure of grassroots enthusiasm for a candidate. In Trump's case, they have been a barometer for how the GOP base is responding to his legal troubles.

Trump has used each of his four criminal indictments to raise money, but his first conviction gave his fundraising a bigger boost.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: French instructors in Ukraine would be 'legitimate target', Lavrov says on visit to West Africa

Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, is on a tour in West Africa as part of a diplomatic push by the isolated Kremlin to forge new ties around the world. Meanwhile, an upcoming summit on Ukraine will reportedly aim to create a pathway for Russian officials to join future talks.

We're pausing our coverage for today but we will be back tomorrow with more updates.

Here is a rundown of the key developments today:

  • Ukraine has used American weapons to strike inside Russia, according to an unnamed Western source;
  • Joe Biden will hold talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Normandy this week during his visit celebrating the 80th anniversary of D-Day;
  • Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has been visiting countries in Africa as part of an ongoing diplomatic offensive from the Kremlin;
  • A former British defence attache has warned Russia's disinformation campaigns are "only going to get worse" as EU parliament elections and the Olympics approach.

A 26-year-old man of dual Ukrainian-Russian nationality has been arrested in possession of explosives after some of them detonated in a hotel room north of Paris.

The man was treated by fire-fighters after he "suffered significant burns following an explosion," on Monday, according to a source.

A source at the French anti-terror prosecutor's office said they had taken charge of the case and opened an investigation on suspicion of a terrorist conspiracy.

A subsequent search of his room led to the discovery of products and materials intended for the manufacture of explosive devices, the source added.

France's domestic spy agency DGSI is handling the investigation, Reuters reports.

Ukraine has used American weapons to strike inside Russia in recent days, according to a Western official.

The weapons were used under recently approved guidance from Joe Biden, allowing US arms to be used to strike inside Russia in defence of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second city.

The official spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Mr Biden's directive allows for US-supplied weapons to be used to strike Russian forces that are attacking or preparing to attack.

It does not change US policy that directs Ukraine not to use American-provided tactical or long-range missiles and other munitions to make offensive strikes inside Russia, US officials said.

Ukrainian officials had stepped up calls on the US to allow Kyiv's forces to defend themselves against attacks originating from Russian territory.

Kharkiv is 12 miles from the Russian border and has recently come under intensified Russian attack.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Qatar for talks with the state's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The Ukrainian president said on X that he planned to discuss Qatar's participation in a process of returning Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, as well as bilateral economic and security issues.

In March, Ukraine and Russia exchanged six children via Qatari mediation.

Earlier this week, Mr Zelenskyy made a surprise trip to the Philippines to thank the country for agreeing to participate in the upcoming peace summit being held in Switzerland.

A Russian-American man has been sentenced by a St Petersburg court to three-and-a-half years in prison on charges of "rehabilitating Nazism".

Yuri Malev was arrested in December over social media posts in which he was alleged to have denigrated the Saint George's ribbon, a Russian military symbol of valour.

One post reportedly contained "obscene language" and another other showed a picture of a corpse wearing the ribbon, captioned: "How to wear the Saint George's ribbon correctly".

The court in St Petersburg said this showed disrespect for society and insulted the memory of the Great Patriotic War (the Russian name for the Second World War).

Malev admitted guilt, according to the court.

He was a graduate of the law faculty of St Petersburg University and had lived in the United States since 1991, according to independent Russian language media.

Baza, a Telegram channel with links to Russian authorities, said Malev was a resident of Brooklyn, New York.

He reportedly entered Russia by bus from Estonia two weeks before he was arrested.

Moscow routinely refers to the government in Kyiv as a "Nazi regime", despite Volodymyr Zelenskyy being Jewish.

Ukraine has been allowed to shoot down Moscow's planes over Russian territory with American weapons since the war broke out, the White House has clarified.

Ukraine "can shoot down Russian aeroplanes that pose an impending threat", national security spokesman John Kirby said.

"And they have. They have since the beginning of the war."

The clarification was given due to confusion over Washington’s recent decision to relax rules on US-supplied weapons striking military targets on Russian soil.

Joe Biden gave authorisation for the strikes on a limited basis to help Kyiv defend itself against Kremlin forces advances towards Kharkiv.

Mr Kirby said he could not confirm reports that Ukraine had used US-supplied weapons on Russian territory for the first time.

He told reporters: "We're just not in a position on a day-to-day basis of knowing exactly what the Ukrainians are firing at what.

"It's certainly at a tactical level. So, I can't confirm that. I can tell you that they understand the guidance that they've been given."

By Ivor Bennett, Moscow correspondent

Sergei Lavrov's trip to Africa is part of an ongoing diplomatic offensive by the Kremlin, running in parallel to its conflict in Ukraine.

Isolated from the West, Russia is trying to forge new ties and has found fertile ground in Africa.

There have been several coups in recent years that have ushered in anti-Western military juntas.

US troops were kicked out of Niger, for example, while the French had to leave Burkina Faso.

In both cases, Moscow was quick to move in as the new security guarantors, and their efforts clearly don't stop there.

This is the veteran foreign minister Lavrov's ninth visit to the continent since Russia invaded Ukraine.

Kenya, Burundi and South Africa were among his stops last year; this week it's Guinea, Congo and Burkina Faso.

In return for military support, Russia gains an ally - they may not support the war, but they won't criticise it either.

The Kremlin portrays this as the formation of a new world order, free from Western imperialism and hegemony.

But others say Russia are the neo-colonialists, painting this as a blatant attempt to expand their sphere of influence.

Ukraine's first deputy foreign minister has held talks with his Chinese counterpart in an effort to increase cooperation between the two countries, the Ukrainian ministry said.

Ukraine's Andriy Sybiha also told Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong that he hoped China would participate in a Ukraine-led peace summit later in June.

Mr Sybiha added that it could be "a good opportunity to make a practical contribution to achieving a just and lasting peace", the Ukrainian foreign ministry said.

A report earlier today (see 7.40am post) said that June's peace summit opened doors to "limited talks with Russia" - despite Russian officials not being invited.

Earlier we brought you news that Ukraine said it had shot down 22 of the 27 Shahed-type drones launched by Russia overnight (see 8.04am post).

Now photographs have emerged of the aftermath of one of the strikes.

Firefighters work to put out the massive blaze in the Poltava region.

As Russia opens a new front on Ukraine's northeastern border, the war has entered an important phase.

Readers have been sending in their questions to our senior correspondents and military experts for their take on the changing battlefield environment.

Today, Trevor Prew asks:

Are there any signs of an underground Russian resistance operating inside Russia, or can Russians openly criticize Putin, as long as they don't protest on the streets or mention the war.

Russia correspondent Ivor Bennett says:

In a word, no.

There wasn't much opposition to speak of in Russia even before the war, but now there's nothing left whatsoever.

All of Putin's political opponents are either exiled, jailed or dead, as are those with any connections to Alexei Navalny.

Those who dare to speak out are silenced.

At one end, are the long-time critics and opposition activists, like Vladimir Kara-Murza, the dual Russian-British national opposition who is serving a 25-year prison sentence for treason.

But at the other end are ordinary Russians, like the former schoolteacher Nikita Tushkanov sentenced to 5.5 years for comments he made online about Putin.

The crackdown on dissent seemingly knows no bounds and it's created a climate in which those who oppose the war are terrified to speak out.

They do exist - as evidenced by the huge turnout for Navalny's funeral. But that was a unique moment and is unlikely to be repeated anytime soon.

Get Rid Of This Ingredient In Your Canned Fruit

Sometimes buying pre-packaged fruit can be a time-saving tactic, but there are certain varieties to avoid. Any canned or packaged fruit that comes with liquid syrup should not be consumed. These heavy syrups are loaded with unnecessary sugars and artificial sweeteners, which can be harmful to the gastrointestinal system.

Instead, try purchasing fresh or frozen fruit. If you need to get canned fruit, make sure to only buy the ones that say they're packed in "100 percent juice."

She goes on to say that they "have no fiber to prevent your blood sugar from spiking and crashing." Similar products such as fruit roll-ups contain high amounts of corn syrup, sugar, palm oil, and a wide variety of artificial colors.

The Importance of Setting Boundaries with Your Mentor

  • Janice Omadeke

don trip merch

When communicated thoughtfully, clear limits lead to a positive and mutually respectful relationship.

In a mentorship, having clear boundaries — along with responses to share when those limits are transgressed — is important for safeguarding your mental health, your privacy, and your productivity. To establish them, have a conversation with your mentor, preferably at the start of the relationship. You can start by flipping the script and asking your mentor about their boundaries first: “Since this is all new, though, I wanted to ask: What boundaries do you want to have around our mentoring relationship?” Listen to their answers, taking the opportunity to weigh in about your own boundaries as they share. If your mentor says, “I really like to keep the details about my personal life out of work,” you can weigh in, “Okay, that’s good to know. I’m an open book, so I don’t mind sharing if you have questions.”

At a recent networking event, I was introduced to a young professional in her first five years in the workforce. (Let’s call her Anne.) She was in the process of assembling  a board of mentors , and expressed concern about one individual who seemed to take offense when Anne didn’t act on their advice immediately or at all. More concerning to her was this mentor’s tendency to veer into personal topics, such as Anne’s future family planning — an area she hadn’t yet decided on and felt irrelevant to her current goal of securing a sales position at a large tech company. Anne liked this mentor but was uncomfortable with the focus on her personal life and unsure of how to address it.
