The Finnish design tradition is strong, both historically and today. Alvar Aalto has had a significant influence on an impressive number of public buildings, from university constructions to churches and concert halls, commercial buildings, etc.

In recent years, many architectural firms have embraced the use of wood, employing hybrid forms, conventional wood, and cross-laminated timber (CLT). Stora Enso, Finland's largest wood producer, is now constructing its headquarters centrally in Helsinki.

One of the unique aspects of Finland is the quality of educational institutions, ranging from primary schools to universities. Additionally, Helsinki has prioritised a brand as a cultural capital with several museums, a newly built library, and concert halls in the city centre.

Key themes:

Universities and public schools From award-winning renovated Alvar Aalto University buildings to innovative primary schools. Finland consistently ranks at the top in international PISA assessments, and the latest schools emphasize interdisciplinary learning environments, sustainable design and energy consumption.

Urban development in 2 former industrial ports: Kalasatama & Jätkasaari

Smart Kalasatama is an initiative to improve the quality of life and communities in Kalasatama. The overall goal of the project is to give residents an extra hour a day through intelligent resource management and open residential areas to the public to enhance the community. By 2030, Kalasatama will accommodate 25,000 people (current population: 3,000) and 10,000 jobs.

Jätkäsaari has transformed from an industrial port to a residential area with distinct and colourful architecture. Here, the plan includes 18,000 residents and 6,000 office workers. In the future, it will be a melting pot of various services, independent shops, and efficient infrastructure, with tram routes, bike paths, and pedestrian paths.

Cultural construction, e.g.:

Rooftop Park: Recreational outdoor area with rainwater management and visionary design.

Cable Factory Cultural Centre: Transformation of a cable factory into a centre for dance, circus, and culture.

Churches: Finland has a unique design tradition in church construction.

Wooden constructions

From saunas to cultural houses, libraries, and Stora Enso's upcoming headquarters and mixed-use project, Katajanokan Laituri. A mixed-use project that will profile Stora Enso's both historical and future dominance in wood construction. The construction is expected to be completed in 2024 and is designed by Anttinen Oiva Arkkitehdit Oy; the engineers are SWECO Rakennetekniikka Oy.

Helsinki, Finland , is a beautiful city with a rich architectural and design history, especially from the last 100 years or so. Here are a few of our favorite Helsinki design landmarks, all of which can be incorporated into any Artisans of Leisure private tour in Helsinki.

1. Temppeliaukion Kirkko (Rock Church) (1969) Nearly hidden from the street, this modern church was excavated from solid rock and covered with a domed copper roof. The low entrance leads to an open, rock-walled space flooded with light coming through the narrow windows encircling the dome. Designed by brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen.

2. Aalto House (1936) and Studio Aalto (1955, 1963) The legendary Finnish architect Alvar Aalto lived and worked in these two modernist buildings in a suburban area on the edge of the city center. We can arrange private tours of the structures, a great way to get a sense of the intimate spaces and abundant natural light, especially in the house.

Lasipalatsi (Glass Palace) is a low-rise functionalist commercial building with huge windows designed by Viljo Revell, Niilo Kokko and Heimo Riihimaki. The work of K2S Architects, Kamppi Chapel of Silence is an oval wooden structure that sits like a sculpture on the edge of a public square. Amos Rex is a subterranean museum of art designed by JKMM Architects. Biomorphic bubbles on its roof decorate the public square above.

8. Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma (1998) and Helsinki Central Library Oodi (2018) Light pours into Kiasma through a long skylight, illuminating the white walls of the interior of the curving museum designed by American architect Steven Holl. Nearby is the Helsinki Central Library Oodi, where behind the undulating wood exterior, ALA Architects created numerous funky spaces and a balcony for taking in views of the city.

An Art-Nouveau Architectural Tour Of Helsinki

Huvilakatu Street, Helsinkik

The Art-Nouveau movement at the turn of the 20th century coincided with a time when Helsinki was being built up and modernised. The style has become so ingrained in national consciousness that it has even influenced modern Scandinavian design. Here are some of the best examples of fin de siècle building design – most are in close proximity to each other or can be reached by tram.

Central railway station.

Most likely the first sight you will see when arriving in Helsinki is the train station, completed in 1914 by architect Eliel Saarinen. Since it serves over 200,000 commuters every day, it has become the most recognisable building in all of Finland. It was even chosen as one of the world’s most beautiful railway stations by the BBC . Most notable of all are the two sets of male guardian figures holding circular beacons on the building’s exterior, who have been given the local nicknames of ‘the stone men’ or ‘the ball guys’.

National Theatre

Next door to the train station and behind a statue of Finland’s most famous writer, Aleksis Kivi, is the Finnish National Theatre, a grey brick building with a striking red roof. Designed by Onni Tarjanne and completed in 1902, it is the oldest Finnish-language theatre in the country which is still in operation.

National Museum of Finland

About ten minutes’ walk from the city centre is the National Museum, which boasts a strong Finnish influence, both inside and outside. The iron-topped tower, tinged green with age, is built in the style of medieval churches and castles, while the ceiling of the entrance hall displays paintings of scenes from the Kalevala, Finland’s national epic poem.

Vltava Restaurant

A good place to stop for lunch on an architectural tour is the Vltava Czech restaurant, which is also next to the train station. It is located in a jugend building, whose origin and year of opening are unknown, but it is protected by the Finnish National Board of Antiquities. Before the restaurant opened, it previously served as a Finnair terminal and a cargo building for the state railway service.

University of Helsinki Student Union

Opened as the House of the Nations in 1910, this building originally hosted some of the student nations of the University of Helsinki. Today, it holds the university’s student union. The other nearby student nation buildings, particularly the Nylands Nation building, are also worth seeing.

Helsinki Workers’ House

This building was designed by Karl Lindahl and opened up in 1908 as a conference centre and leisure facility for Helsinki’s working class population, although today it mostly serves as a hotel and event space. It is notable for its large grey granite stones, intended to appear castle-like, and its rounded corners. Art-Nouveau chandeliers dating from 1919 designed by Lindahl are still visible in the Congress Hall. The building even has deep historical significance as it served as the headquarters of the Reds during the Finnish Civil War of 1918.

Kallio Church

Kallio is today known mostly for its younger population and street art, yet it still hosts many gems of the Art-Nouveau period. Most notable of all is Kallio Church, which stands atop the hill in the notable Helsinki grey granite, with a tall tower, green roof, and rounded front entrance. Today it serves the district as a Lutheran church and concert venue.

Inside a Century-Old LA Home Where the Sun Never Seems to Set

If there’s one thing Alex Anderson and Aaron Kravitz swear by, it’s the power of instinct. Ask the couple how they came to be Angelenos and they explain that it was thanks to a stroke of serendipity. “We never meant to move,” says Alex, who works in the creative field. “We started our home search here for fun after feeling priced out in San Francisco.” All virtually, mind you.

When the couple chanced upon their current home—a single-story Spanish Revival —in the LA neighborhood of Eagle Rock, online, they knew in their bones that it was the one . So much so that they purchased it sight unseen after reaching out to a local agent in LA whom they’d never met. Improbable? Probably. “But it’s a hundred percent true,” laughs Aaron, a tech executive.

“We love the big windows in the living room. The space feels bright, airy, and open while warm and cozy at the same time,” says Aaron. The designers balanced the original architecture with contemporary overlays, including an Offset coffee table and stool by Resident , a Crest sofa and Mushroom stool by Vintage on Point, and a hand-tufted Taylor rug by Revival . The Grain Drum 33 pendant by Ravenhill Studio remains invisible during the day, but steps in for the sun come dusk. Smith and Noble drapes, together with a Vintage Stripe lumbar and a Ramona Throw by Morrow Goods, lend softness to the setting.

A Bernard lounge chair by Hay sits in the company of Place’s hand-carved Congo table . The pillow is the Lorenzo by Morrow Goods .

The home had lots of upsides—it flowed from indoors to outdoors, had its own personality and history (it turned 100 last year), and the light was great—but it also had just as many downsides, including rotted flooring, inoperable windows, termite-infested frames and siding, an awkward kitchen, and a general lack of personality. Fixing all the flaws meant calling in the professionals, which the couple swiftly acted upon by enlisting the help of husband-and-wife duo Shawn and Tina Taylor of LA-based interior design practice Dacotah Studio . Their brief? To lean into the “good bones” and light of the home, and emphasize the indoor-outdoor flow. “Our dream was to feel like we are on a laid-back vacation in Italy,” muses Alex.

One corner of the living room is reserved for quiet contemplation. The chair is the Lars design by Room & Board . Ravenhill Studio’s ADA oak sconce , plus a small watercolor by Claire Oswalt and an artwork by Georgia O’Keeffe (partially seen above bookshelf), punctuate the wall above.

For Shawn and Tina, one thing was clear: If they were going to do vacation, they were going to do it right. “We were inspired by the home’s original Spanish details, and we wanted to honor the charm of the original structure while bringing it into the 21st century,” shares Tina. She and Shawn pared down the palette, opting for a combination of light oak, island whites, and calming, subdued tiles that would help keep the spotlight on the art and furnishings. As Shawn explains, some things took more time than others. “The reconfiguration of the kitchen went through several design iterations,” he notes, clarifying that the end result—a galley setup with a large island and an arched entrance—was well worth the effort.

Conveniently connected to the backyard, the kitchen is an indoor-outdoor sanctuary characterized by marble and oak. “It’s our favorite room of all,” says Alex. “It’s a central gathering place, and we love how inviting, open, and functional it is for cooking and entertaining.” Simonini’s The Wing stools line the island.

31 Best Coffee Tables for Every Style and Budget

Why go to the dining room when you have a breakfast nook close by? It’s a question Alex and Aaron never fail to ask—and answer—on Sundays, when time is aplenty. The MR Side Chairs by Knoll from Design Within Reach and vintage Brancusi table look like they could have been there all along.

The original walls had a palm tree design stamped into the stucco that the couple and their five-year-old son, Julian, say they thought they were going to love forever. “We were wisely convinced otherwise, but we still like to imagine them underneath the smooth walls,” Alex says. It’s not just the walls that have changed since the family occupied the home. It’s also, as Alex reveals, “the overall spirit.” Aaron puts a finer point on the subject: “We all referred to the home as ‘the white house’ for a year. Once we moved in, we renamed it the Persimmon House, after the beautiful Persimmon tree outside the window.”

In the primary bedroom, a Vitra Akari 24N lamp by Isamu Noguchi, a dove painting by Pablo Picasso, gauzy Smith and Noble drapes, and cloud-colored walls channel a meditative haven. A Linen in Cocoa duvet by In Bed and a Schoolhouse throw enliven the bed by Dacotah Studio . A tiny drawing of a stamp by an unknown artist, inherited from Aaron’s dad (who was a stamp collector) takes pride of place between the windows. The rug is the Oda Runner by Morrow Goods .

The designers updated the primary bathroom with a double vanity and sleek fixtures and finishes. Sconces by Matt Alford Studio elevate the walls. The mirrors, stool, and rug are from West Elm , Etsy , and Leif respectively. Towels are Coyuchi .

“The homeowners wanted plenty of closet space in their primary suite. We redesigned the small cramped walk-in closet and installed a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe that was perfect for their needs,” says Tina.

Evidently, the move to Los Angeles was written in the couple’s stars long before they knew it. “It’s been great,” concedes Aaron. “We love that you can see green from every room, and when you stand at the front of the house, you can see through to the backyard. The interior design provides a quiet serenity that celebrates and complements the outdoors.” A perfect day for the family usually includes a lazy morning in the yard, an adventure in nature, or a laid-back dinner with friends. “We’re inspired by film and food and are lucky to have so many great options nearby,” says Alex. Ask them if the home comes close to their vision, and there’s a unanimous response: yes. “Thank goodness we made that blind offer!” The power of instinct, indeed.

Image may contain Indoors Interior Design Home Decor Bed Furniture Art Painting Rug Cup Bedroom Room and Cushion

The previously unused garage was reincarnated into a luminous guest suite that is part lounge, part bedroom. A custom Murphy bed by Dacotah Studio appears and disappears on demand. When it does appear, Alex confirms it’s most often dressed in Flax Sheets and Hawkins New York’s Bronze Duvet . Chris Frazer Smith’s “Bowling Alley” hangs above the bed.

Image may contain Coffee Table Furniture Table Couch Architecture Building Indoors Living Room Room and Home Decor

Designed like a sunroom, the lounge in the garage is an idyll that lets in the light. The chairs and coffee table are both bespoke builds by Dacotah Studio , while the sofa is Crate & Barrel’s Cambria design. The Walker Noble Kuba rug by West Elm holds a mirror to the sunshine. Outer was the brand of choice for the outdoor teak set.

Image may contain Sink Sink Faucet and Basin

“Before the redesign, you couldn’t even sit straight on the toilet without hitting the sink,” says Alex of the tiny 15-square-foot guest bathroom. Tina and Shawn put on their thinking caps to carve out a thoughtful design and layout that included a wall-mounted sink and a tankless toilet.

AIS Open Stage for The Bartlett Summer Show 2024

01 July 2024–04 July 2024, 11:00 am–8:00 pm

Dwelling in Scarcity: Artisan Revival in the Wake of the Apocalypse (2024), spread from zine produced by Year 2 Architectural Research students on the BSc Architectural & Interdisciplinary Studies programme

A series of workshops and events organised by Architectural & Interdisciplinary Studies students.

Event Information

The series of events will be hosted in various locations at 22 Gordon Street, please reference the location in the event listing.

Architectural & Interdisciplinary Studies is a unique undergraduate degree programme that enables students to tailor their three years of study by selecting all of their modules; electives are chosen mainly from the Faculty of the Built Environment but also complimented by other modules from across the whole of the UCL. The greatest strength of the programme is its interdisciplinary nature, allowing the students determine where, what and how they study, and supports them to develop the skills to build their own acadmic and social agency. The talks, installations and workshops that form the AIS Open Stage 2024 are student led and have been developed from the student’s academic studies, as such the event serves as a clear demonstration of the originality, collaborative nature, academic rigour and independent spirit of each of the students.

Invisible Creases, a performance by Paula Shen

Join Paula Shen, a third year Architectural & Interdisciplinary Studies BSc student, for a performance held in the programme’s exhibition space, exploring the often-overlooked domestic labour of ironing shirts. The term ‘invisible creases’ points to the unseen and unrecognised, gendered work that contributes to maintaining a household. It suggests that underlying issues and inequalities in domestic settings need to be addressed and smoothed out, much like ironing out physical creases in fabric.

Location: Architectural & Interdisciplinary Studies Exhibition Space, 6th Floor, 22 Gordon Street, WC1H 0QB

Agaseke Kanyu, a guided workshop by Tess Mihigo Uwera

Join Tess Mihigo Uwera, a second year Architectural & Interdisciplinary Studies BSc student, for a guided workshop on how to knit a community. This workshop will explore traditional Rwandan female craft processes of coiling and weaving.

The event is open to female participants to reflect how the project explore how women build community through collective practices such as knitting.

Location:  Room 5.04, 22 Gordon Street, WC1H 0QB

Printmaking Workshop

Join second year Architectural & Interdisciplinary Studies BSc students for a printmaking workshop in which participating guests will have the chance to make a paper envelope and practice woodblock and screen printing. Each participant will receive a student-made zine entitled Dwelling in Scarcity: Artisan Revival in the Wake of the Apocalypse.

Each of the three stages will be led by instructors with written guidance. Participants can take part in as many of the stages as they wish. The workshop will run for approximately two hours participants are invited to drop in at any time during the session.

Please note: spaces are limited to 12 participants at any one time.

Location: 6.02, 22 Gordon Street, WC1H 0QB

A guided tour of The Bartlett Summer Show with Founders Keepers, the school's waste materials interception research team

Founders Keepers research project was created by students, Marius Sidaravicius and Harang Seo, Y3 Architectural & Interdisciplinary Studies BSc and Hannah Simon, Y3 Architecture BSc, supervised by BSA Environmental Design Lecturer Blanche Cameron, and supported by staff across the school, especially the Facilities team, B-Made workshop staff and school leadership.    This tour will share the process prototyped through 2023-24 to salvage 'waste' materials across the school, including an introduction into how materials are intercepted from incineration, how the free materials shop was set up and functions, and the impacts on behaviour and culture change across the school. Guests will be shown around the Summer Show, highlighting the reuse of materials in the exhibition.

The Founders Keepers research report 2023 for funders Bartlett Climate Action on Net Zero 2030 is available here . A second report for UCL Changemakers will be published in July 2024, when the team present Founders Keepers research and findings at the Cultures & Cities Conference in Barcelona.

Location:  Meet on the 6th floor landing, 22 Gordon Street

What do we mean by 'sustainable materials' in the ecological and climate crisis?

Organised by the BSA Society In the ecological and climate crisis, materials use, reuse and 'waste' are under the spotlight. Environmental impact, ecological footprint, embodied energy, water and land, local or long-distance supply chains and what happens when materials are no longer needed are all up for scrutiny. Decision-making is critical. Is the sustainable choice always more expensive? Does sustainable performance outweigh sustainable sourcing? Do we have a choice? How do we decide?

Barbara Jones – Straw Works Ltd, pioneer of the UK strawbale building movement, Director of School of Natural Building, and recently named one of 50 greatest women builders of all time.  Duncan Baker-Brown  – BakerBrownStudio, ACAN, UKGBC, sustainable design expert and advocate, and candidate for RIBA President 2025-27 Sarah Partridge  – Natural Building expert and trainer, founder of Orchard Barn Environmental Education Centre Jan Kattein – Jan Kattein Architects, recently awarded for commitment to sustainable community-based design and materials reuse for Paper Garden and other projects. Dr Eshrar Latif – Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University, author, educator certified Passivhaus designer, new breathable materials pioneer.

Chaired by the BSA Society.

Location:  Room 6.02, 22 Gordon Street

Greening Cities Workshop

Grand Tour of Europe fosters new perspectives

By Madison Brinnon 07-02-2024

Students and faculty have returned to Miami after participating in the Grand Tour travel program , where they explored some of Europe’s most significant historical buildings and public spaces. The program provided on-site instruction, offering a deep understanding of the architecture and history of these cities.

The tour included visits to Paris, Venice, Florence, Rome, Athens, and the stunning Greek islands of Mykonos and Rhodes, as well as Toledo and Madrid. During the journey, students received enlightening on-site lectures from professors Frank Martinez and Ana Regalado, who provided in-depth insights into the historical context, references, precedents, and theoretical ideas behind the architecture they observed.

Matt Jarmon from the School of Architecture reflected on the transformative experience, stating, “The Grand Tour of Europe was an unforgettable experience, offering a unique opportunity to explore cities foundational to Western architecture. Seeing the buildings in person allowed me to comprehend their origins and influences in a way that was previously unimaginable. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity, as it has significantly enhanced my understanding and connection to architecture. I’ve already applied this knowledge in my internship and am excited to incorporate what I learned into my future projects.”

The program was not limited to architecture students. Sofia Milo from the Herbert Business School shared her initial apprehensions and subsequent revelations, “I approached the Grand Tour trip with a mix of excitement and nerves. As a business student, I wasn’t sure what to expect or if I would be able to keep up with the group. However, Professor Martinez’s openness to questions allowed me to learn the foundations of architecture. Experiencing architecture in person, rather than through pictures or drawings, was incredible. Not only did I learn about architecture in some of the world’s most beautiful places, but I also formed new friendships and created lasting memories. Overall, I would highly recommend this trip to any business student looking to expand their horizons.”

This Grand Tour travel program proved to be an educational journey, enriching students' understanding of architecture and fostering new perspectives and connections.
