Nine cruise lines fall under the Carnival umbrella, making it the largest parent company in the cruise industry. You've likely heard of Carnival Cruise Line but may be less familiar with the smaller brands in the group.

Aida Cruises

Aida might not be familiar to you, but that's by design. It caters fully to a German-speaking market, which means North Americans might find it difficult to mingle with fellow passengers and crew if they sailed on one of the line's 12 ships.

Aida's vessels are painted with the line's trademark faces, featuring yellow eyes, blue eyeshadow and bright red lips.

The line became part of Carnival Corp. in 2003, when the corporation merged with P&O Princess Cruises, which included Aida, P&O, P&O Australia and Princess.

Carnival Cruise Line

Founded in 1972 by Ted Arison, Carnival Cruise Line started out with just one secondhand ship, Mardi Gras. Since then, it has grown to be the industry's largest cruise brand with more than two dozen vessels currently in operation, all of which were built specifically for the line (including one of its newest, also named Mardi Gras in honor of the original ship).

Carnival refers to its fleet as the "fun ships," offering a lively onboard atmosphere that focuses on pool parties, game shows and original entertainment. It prides itself on friendly service and a plethora of casual yet delectable dining venues. The line is an excellent choice for families, and it offers both short and long voyages at a variety of price points that make cruising affordable for most travelers.

Costa Cruises

Carnival Corp. took full ownership of Italian line Costa Cruises in 2000 after originally obtaining just 50% in 1997. The brand largely serves the Italian cruise demographic in the Mediterranean. In 2022, following the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, Carnival Corp. transferred some of Costa's ships to Carnival Cruise Line, touting "Fun Italian Style" and offering North Americans a taste of what Costa has to offer.

Like its North America-based counterparts, Costa sails ships that include several restaurants, bars and entertainment venues but with an Italian flare – right down to gondola decor and pasta galore.

Cunard Line

The Carnival parent company took over a majority stake in Cunard in 1998, but the brand's history began in 1840, when a Canadian war veteran established a fleet of steam-powered ferries and, later, ocean liners.

Throughout the years, Cunard vessels have been responsible for serving in wars, transporting immigrants and running transatlantic routes between the U.S. and Europe. The line started out offering necessary transportation but eventually pivoted to the luxurious leisure travel for which the line is known today.

On board, try a fencing class, learn flower arranging, or enjoy a full-service afternoon tea with real clotted cream served by white-gloved waiters.

Holland America Line

Acquired by Carnival Corp. in 1989, Holland America also carries a rich history dating back to 1873. It initially sailed transatlantic voyages that ferried immigrants between The Netherlands and New York City.

The line currently relies heavily on its heritage to inform its current identity. On board, passengers will find excellent food, music and customer service, all of which tend to draw slightly older passengers and multigenerational family groups.

P&O Australia

P&O Australia was acquired by Carnival in 2003, and it remains the only cruise line in the world that caters entirely to Australian passengers who enjoy fun-in-the-sun cruises.

With just three ships in its fleet, the line is small but specific, offering round-trip voyages from Sydney and Brisbane in Australia and sailing throughout the Australia and New Zealand regions.

P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises is the U.K. counterpart to P&O Australia, providing a fun and affordable cruise experience for Brits.

It features an onboard vibe that's slightly more upscale than sister brand Carnival but at a similar price point and with decidedly English touches, such as an absolutely scrumptious — and free — afternoon tea.

Like several of Carnival Corp.'s other brands, the line came under the umbrella in 2003 during the P&O Princess Cruises merger.

Princess Cruises

Princess was rolled under the Carnival umbrella in 2003 when Carnival Corp. combined with P&O Princess Cruises.

Princess' ships walk the line between courting older passengers with their connection to popular 1980s television show "The Love Boat" and staying current with technological advancements that include the industry's first fleetwide wearable, the OceanMedallion . As a result, the line appeals to a variety of passengers of all ages, including couples hoping to share a romantic vacation.

Seabourn Cruise Line

In 1992, Carnival Corp. acquired a 25% stake in Seabourn before purchasing the entire brand outright in 2001. The luxury cruise line, which includes things like alcohol, Wi-Fi and gratuities in its fares, sails a fleet of lovely ships with a focus on high-end furnishings and next-level service.

Seabourn also began offering expedition sailings with a couple of vessels that were built specifically for cruises to rugged, far-flung and less-traveled destinations that include the Arctic and the Galapagos.

Which Other Cruise Lines Does Carnival Own?

Did you know that cruise lines owned by Carnival Corporation & PLC carry over 12 million passengers a year on more than 100 cruise ships?

That’s a lot of vacations.  But you may not recognize that a total of 9 cruise line brands fall under the Carnival Corporation umbrella.

It can be a little confusing trying to sort out which company owns which cruise lines, so this post will answer what other cruise lines are owned by the parent company of Carnival Corporation & PLC.

The most recognizable of Carnival’s brands, Carnival Cruise Line currently has 26 ships in operation.   The line was founded in 1972, and today carries about 5 million guests per year.    This is also one of the company’s most economical cruise lines, offering fares that often start at $50 per person, per day.   The unmistakable red and blue whale tail can be seen in ports in the Caribbean, Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Panama, Canada, New England, and along the coast of California.

This is not only Carnival’s largest premium cruise line, Princess Cruises is the largest premium cruise line in the world.   Beginning operations in 1965, Princess currently sails 17 ships all over the planet.  The line was featured in the hit TV show Love Boat in the 70’s and 80’s .  Now, Princess cruise ships can be seen everywhere from Europe to Asia to South America.   When sailing in the Caribbean, Princess ships will often stop at the award-winning private island of Princess Cays.

Holland America Line

This line was started in 1873 and offers 14 mid-size cruise ships.   Now based in Seattle, Holland America Line offers popular cruises to Alaska and Europe and also has sailings to Australia, Asia, Hawaii, South America, the Caribbean, and even Antarctica.    Holland America is known for its focus on discovering new cultures and places and provides 1 day cruises or up to 50 day cruises.

The Seabourn cruising experience focuses on smaller ships that are both luxurious and refined.  With operations starting in 1988, Seabourn provides ultra-luxury vacations on 5 small ships that can cater a more personal experience on its 600-passenger and 450-passenger ships.    Most cruises are 7 to 14 days long, but Seabourn also has some much longer voyages that last for several months and sail all over the world.

With three ocean liners in its fleet, Cunard is known for both it’s history and excellence in maritime travel.  The line was founded in 1840 and is the proud owner of the fastest cruise ship in the world, Queen Mary 2.  Cunard offers transatlantic cruises in record time with this ship.  Her Majesty the Queen is Godmother to both Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2 .   You will find most of Cunard’s itineraries between 7 and 14 days with a few world cruises each year as well.

AIDA Cruises

You might have seen these ships with the lips while out at sea.  AIDA is a cruise line for the German-speaking market and offers a more casual, relaxing approach to cruising.    With 12 ships already in its fleet, AIDA Cruises is building its largest ship to date (180,000 tons) which should be delivered sometime this year.  AIDAnova is the 1st cruise ship in the world that will be completely powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), when it debuts in the fall of 2018

Costa Cruises

With cruises mostly in Europe, South America, and the Caribbean at this time, Costa Cruises has a fleet of 15 cruise ships.  The ships fly under the Italian flag, and the company is based in Genoa, Italy.   Considered to offer some of Italy’s finest in regard to maritime décor and design, Costa will have 4 more ships added to its fleet over the next 3 years.   These newbuilds will consist of two 5,220-passenger capacity ships and two 4,180-passenger capacity ships.

P&O Cruises (UK)

One of the most popular cruise brands in the UK, P&O Cruises UK began in 1837.  The line currently operates 8 premium cruise ships and has one more on the way which will carry up to 5,190 guests.  Three ships in the fleet cater to adult-only cruises while the rest of the ships offer family cruise vacations year-round.   P&O Cruises UK is the sister company to P&O Cruises Australia, and the two were split in 2000 while still retaining close ties.   Many of the itineraries with this line will go out of Southampton, England, but P&O also offers sailings to the Caribbean and around the world.

Carnival Corp. ( CCL ) is a global cruise line. It operates as a dual-listed company with Carnival Plc (CCL.L), but the two separate legal entities function as a single economic entity through contractual agreements. Shares of CCL are traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) while shares of CCL.L are traded on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) . The company offers cruise vacations through a range of brands that operate in various geographic locations throughout North America, Europe, and Australia. Its brands cater to different price points, lifestyles and cultures as well as entertainment and vacation preferences. Carnival posted a net gain of $1.96 billion on revenue of $21.59 billion in fiscal year (FY) 2023, which ended Nov. 30, 2023. The  market cap  of CCL was $19.49 billion and that of CCL.L was $13.57 billion, as of May 15, 2024.

Carnival's leading brand is Carnival Cruise Line, which was founded in 1972 by entrepreneur Ted Arison. Carnival Cruise Line was initially formed as part of a subsidiary of American International Travel Service (AITS). The company started out with a single used trans-Atlantic ocean liner that it converted into a cruise liner and renamed the Mardi Gras.

In 1974, Arison purchased Carnival Cruise Line for $1 and the assumption of AITS' debt of $5 million. At that point, the cruise line was still a small-time operator struggling to survive. But it managed to steadily grow in size and popularity, and went public in 1987 through an initial public offering (IPO) . The cash raised in the IPO provided the company with the capital needed to continue expanding through acquisitions. The company, which was renamed Carnival Corp. in the early 1990s, has since built a portfolio of globally-recognized cruise brands. Below, we look in more detail at five of those brands.

Holland America Line N.V.

• Type of Business: Cruise Line
• Acquisition Price: $625 million
• Acquisition Date: November 1988 (announced)

Holland America Line traces its origins to the founding of a shipping and passenger line called Netherlands-American Steamship Co. in 1873. In the first 25 years since its founding, the company owned a fleet of six cargo and passenger ships that it operated between Holland and the Dutch East Indies. The company would become known over time as the Holland America Line due to its being headquartered in the Dutch city of Rotterdam. In 1989, Carnival Cruise Line formally acquired the company, reinforcing its position as the largest cruise line in terms of the number of passengers. The Holland America Line now operates a fleet of 11 ships cruising to over 425 ports in more than 100 countries.

Seabourn Cruise Line Ltd.

• Type of Business: Ultra-Luxury Cruise Line
• Acquisition Price: $15 million (initial 25% stake); $10 million (additional 25% stake); unknown amount (remaining 50% stake in 1998)
• Acquisition Date: 1992 (25% stake); 1995-1996 (25% stake); 1998-1999 (remaining 50% stake)

Seabourn Cruise Line was founded in 1988 with the launch of the 208-passenger Seabourn Pride. The idea for the cruise line originated two years earlier among a small group of luxury hospitality and cruising executives looking to reinvent luxury cruising. When the Seabourn Pride was first launched, it offered: spacious all-suite accommodations; public spaces designed for relaxed socializing; and a stern designed like a private beach resort. Just four years later in 1992, Carnival agreed to purchase a 50% stake in Seabourn via two separate ten-year loans of $15 million and $10 million. With the $15 million loan Carnival acquired an initial 25% stake in Seabourn. The second loan for $10 million secured an additional 25% stake in late 1995. In 1998, the company purchased the remaining 50% stake in Seabourn. At the same time, Carnival acquired Cunard Line Ltd. and combined it with Seabourn. Today, Seabourn operates a fleet of three 458-passenger and two 600-passenger ships offering an ultra-luxury cruising experience in over 400 destinations globally.

Costa made its first voyage from Genoa to Buenos Aires in 1948 with a trans-Atlantic liner named the "Anna C". By the 1960s, the Italy-based company was Europe's largest cruise line. Costa was jointly acquired in 1997 by Carnival and Airtours, each of the two companies purchasing a respective 50% stake. Three years later, Carnival purchased the remaining stake in Costa from Airtours for approximately $515 million. The acquisition of Costa bolstered Carnival's presence in the fast-growing European market. Carnival is now the parent company of both Costa Cruise Lines and AIDA Cruises. Today, Costa operates a fleet of 12 ships and visits over 260 ports around the world. AIDA leads the German-speaking cruise market and currently operates a fleet of 13 cruise ships.

Cunard Line Ltd.

• Type of Business: Luxury Cruise Line
• Acquisition Price: $500 million (initial 68% stake); $205 million (remaining stake)
• Acquisition Date: 1998 (initial 68% stake); 1999 (remaining 32% stake)

The Cunard Line was founded in 1840 by war veteran and timber merchant Samuel Cunard. It started out providing mail service in Canada's maritime region before eventually expanding its services across the Atlantic and establishing itself as an international shipping company. During the 1880s, Cunard transported more than one million of the 2.5 million people seeking to settle in the U.S. The company continued to grow and expand over the next century. Cunard was operating five luxury cruise ships by 1998, the year Carnival and a group of investors purchased its operating assets for $500 million. Carnival acquired a 68% interest in the cruise line and consolidated it with Seabourn, of which the company had simultaneously purchased the remaining stake. In 1999, Carnival purchased the remaining 32% stake in Cunard in a deal worth $205 million. The purchase of Cunard, the largest luxury cruise operator in the world at the time, made Carnival the largest cruise company in the world. Cunard currently operates four luxury cruise vessels.

P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises was founded in 1837 as the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. While the company started out primarily transporting mail, it went on to offer its first leisure cruise from London to the Mediterranean in 1844. Cruising would gradually grow in popularity and become a more regular activity by the mid-1880s. In 2003, the company's cruise operations, known as P&O Princess Cruises Plc, were acquired by Carnival for between $7-$8 billion. The acquisition included Princess Cruises, P&O Cruises, P&O Cruises Australia, and tour operator Princess Tours. The merger between the two companies led to the formation of the dual-listed company – Carnival Corp. and Carnival Plc – discussed in the introduction above. It made Carnival into the first global cruise company. Today, Carnival operates P&O as two separate brands: P&O Cruises (U.K.), which operates a fleet of six premium ships; and P&O Cruises (Australia), which operates a fleet of three ships.

Carnival Corporation & PLC owns and operates many popular cruise brands, including namesake brand Carnival Cruise Line, also the corporation’s largest.

Nine cruise lines fall under the Carnival umbrella, making it the largest parent company in the cruise industry. You’ve likely heard of Carnival Cruise Line but may be less familiar with the smaller brands in the group.

Here’s a full list of cruise brands owned by Carnival Corporation & PLC.

Aida Cruises

Aida might not be familiar to you, but that’s by design. It caters fully to a German-speaking market, which means North Americans might find it difficult to mingle with fellow passengers and crew if they sailed on one of the line’s 12 ships.

Aida’s vessels are painted with the line’s trademark faces, featuring yellow eyes, blue eyeshadow and bright red lips.

The line became part of Carnival Corp. in 2003, when the corporation merged with P&O Princess Cruises, which included Aida, P&O, P&O Australia and Princess.

Carnival Cruise Line

Founded in 1972 by Ted Arison, Carnival Cruise Line started out with just one secondhand ship, Mardi Gras. Since then, it has grown to be the industry’s largest cruise brand with more than two dozen vessels currently in operation, all of which were built specifically for the line (including one of its newest, also named Mardi Gras in honor of the original ship).

Carnival refers to its fleet as the “fun ships,” offering a lively onboard atmosphere that focuses on pool parties, game shows and original entertainment. Costa Cruises

Carnival Corp. took full ownership of Italian line Costa Cruises in 2000 after originally obtaining just 50% in 1997. The brand largely serves the Italian cruise demographic in the Mediterranean. In 2022, following the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, Carnival Corp. transferred some of Costa’s ships to Carnival Cruise Line, touting “Fun Italian Style” and offering North Americans a taste of what Costa has to offer.

Like its North America-based counterparts, Costa sails ships that include several restaurants, bars and entertainment venues but with an Italian flare – right down to gondola decor and pasta galore.

Cunard Line

The Carnival parent company took over a majority stake in Cunard in 1998, but the brand’s history began in 1840, when a Canadian war veteran established a fleet of steam-powered ferries and, later, ocean liners.

Throughout the years, Cunard vessels have been responsible for serving in wars, transporting immigrants and running transatlantic routes between the U.S. and Europe. The line started out offering necessary transportation but eventually pivoted to the luxurious leisure travel for which the line is known today.

On board, try a fencing class, learn flower arranging, or enjoy a full-service afternoon tea with real clotted cream served by white-gloved waiters.

Holland America Line

Acquired by Carnival Corp. in 1989, Holland America also carries a rich history dating back to 1873. It initially sailed transatlantic voyages that ferried immigrants between The Netherlands and New York City.

The line currently relies heavily on its heritage to inform its current identity. On board, passengers will find excellent food, music and customer service, all of which tend to draw slightly older passengers and multigenerational family groups.

P&O Australia

P&O Australia was acquired by Carnival in 2003, and it remains the only cruise line in the world that caters entirely to Australian passengers who enjoy fun-in-the-sun cruises.

With just three ships in its fleet, the line is small but specific, offering round-trip voyages from Sydney and Brisbane in Australia and sailing throughout the Australia and New Zealand regions.

P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises is the U.K. counterpart to P&O Australia, providing a fun and affordable cruise experience for Brits.

Complete Map of Carnival Fleet by Homeport & List of Ships

No cruise line is as large and well-represented in cruising as Carnival. The line is the largest in the North American market, with roughly two dozen ships sailing from ports across the United States, from Long Beach to Galveston to Miami to Baltimore to San Juan.

From smaller, older ships like the Carnival Fantasy (in service since 1990) to huge, brand-new ships like the Carnival Horizon (in service since 2018), the cruise line has a ton of variety in the ships that it sails. One common theme, however, is the distinctive red funnel that is a trademark of Carnival’s ships.

And if you are looking for that funnel, we have just the map for you. With more than 20 ships in service, it can be tough to keep trap of which ships call which port home. In addition, the line regularly moves ships to ports around the country, making it even more difficult to know which ship is cruising from where.

A four-day trip from Miami to the Caribbean might cost under $200 for an interior cabin while a 10-day trip from Sydney, Australia to the Great Barrier Reef might start at $450 and go up from there.

The time of year you sail matters, too. For example, an off-season cruise to the Bahamas in February might cost $189 while the same cruise in June could be $684 for the same cabin on the same ship.

Likewise, the nicer the cabin, the higher the price. An interior room might cost $469 while a suite costs $1,799.

What is the newest Carnival ship?

The Carnival Celebration ship, which sails to the Caribbean from Miami, is the line’s newest ship, and debatably the best carnival cruise ship.

The Excel-class ship features an on-board roller coaster, can transport 5,282 passengers, has 20 dining venues, a dozen bars and lounges and is only the second Carnival ship to use liquid natural gas as fuel — a more eco-friendly fuel source.

Carnival loyalty program: VIFP

While it won’t earn you VIFP points, the Carnival World Mastercard is a way to earn FunPoints, which you can use like cash toward your next cruise booking.

Earn 20,000 FunPoints after your first purchase or balance transfer, which is worth a $200 statement credit towards your next cruise. You’ll then earn 2 points per dollar on Carnival and partner cruise lines and 1 point per dollar on everything else.

How to Redeem FunPoints

You can cash in your FunPoints by applying them as statement credits toward any Carnival purchases you make over $50, including:

Point value varies depending on how much you’re spending. For example:

Wi-Fi doesn’t come free on Carnival ships. To get connected, you’ll have to purchase a Wi-Fi package, which you can do in advance of your trip or on board, which may cost more. Expect to pay from $12.75-$22 per day per device.

All Carnival ships include food and beverages, though there are speciality dining and beverage options and packages on most ships that cost extra.

There are two drink packages you can purchase on Carnival cruises: Bottomless Bubbles and Cheers!

Bottomless Bubbles offers unlimited soda during your voyage for $6.95 per day for children and $9.95 per day for adults.

Cheers! offers a flat price for alcoholic (and speciality non-alcoholic) beverages throughout your trip for $59.95 per person per day.

For cruises that last 15 days or less, neither pre-cruise COVID testing nor vaccinations are required for children or adults cruising with Carnival.

For cruises longer than 15 days, depending on the destination, guests may be required to provide proof of vaccination and/or a negative test prior to embarkation.

Carnival is taking on Royal Caribbean with its own $600 million private resort — see Celebration Key's planned features

Step aside, CocoCay. Royal Caribbean's private island could soon face some serious competition.

About 140 miles east of Miami, Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay receives thousands of eager families virtually every day of the year, drawn to the private Caribbean island's irresistible waterpark, beach clubs, and family-friendly amenities.

The tropical destination has become a massive hit with the cruise line's guests. And it seems Carnival, which also targets cruising families, wants a slice of its competitor's winning pie.

Carnival already operates its own private island, Half Moon Cay.

But what's better than one exclusive port? Two of them.

The cruise giant is now building another destination just for its guests: Celebration Key, a mile-long resort-like getaway on Grand Bahama Island .

The $600 million project, Carnival Corp's largest, is set to open in 2025 — a sign that the company is "clearly following Royal Caribbean's footsteps," Patrick Scholes, lodging and leisure research analyst at Truist Securities, told Business Insider in March.

Carnival’s promises for its private destination might sound familiar.

Royal Caribbean's private island has a waterpark with 14 slides and children's play areas.

Similarly, according to Carnival's recent announcement, Celebration Key will have a large, family-friendly freshwater lagoon with two 350-foot-long waterslides and a children's water playground.

It's a scaled-back version of CocoCay's popular feature — for now. Looking ahead, Carnival said it plans to build a waterpark and zipline course, too.

Celebration Key would also offer amenities like ping-pong, basketball, and volleyball.

As you might've guessed, these activities are also available on Royal Caribbean's island as well.

Looking to escape the sound of screaming children? Carnival says Celebration Key will have a separate adult-only section, again with frills reminiscent of CocoCay's recently opened pool club (as in, a swim-up pool bar, a DJ, and no kids in sight).

It wouldn’t be a cruise-owned private island without up-charged amenities.

Travelers at Perfect Day at CocoCay can splurge on private beach clubs, cabanas, shopping, food, and alcohol.

The same goes for Celebration Key. In fact, "You'd be surprised at how much people are willing to pay to rent cabanas for the day," Josh Weinstein, president and CEO of Carnival Corp, told investors in late March.

Like CocoCay, Carnival expects its private destination to be a big money maker with increased ticket revenue and "incremental in-port spending," Weinstein said. Plus, it'll be near Florida's major cruise ports, allowing Carnival to save money on fuel — another major benefit to owning private Caribbean properties.

Celebration Key is already included in over 500 of Carnival’s itineraries across 18 ships.

We're still a year from its debut, but that's not stopping the company from planning the expansion of its upcoming property.

Carnival said it'll spend $100 million extending Celebration Key's pier, which, when completed in 2026, will allow it to accommodate four of Carnival's largest cruise ships.

By 2028, the cruise line says the destination will be able to accommodate 4 million travelers annually.

Why Carnival Cruise Line’s Fleet Is About to Get Bigger

Carnival Cruise Line will absorb its sister brand P&O Cruises Australia and its ships next year.

Carnival Cruise Line will absorb its sister brand P&O Cruises Australia and its ships next year, growing its presence in the South Pacific.

The addition to Carnival’s fleet comes as parent company Carnival Corporation & plc makes plans to shut down the Australian cruise line in March 2025, according to the cruise company . Two of P&O Cruises Australia’s ships — the Pacific Encounter and the Pacific Adventure — will then be incorporated into the Carnival Cruise Line brand.

"Despite increasing Carnival Cruise Line's capacity… guest demand remains incredibly strong so we're leveraging our scale in an even more meaningful way by absorbing an entire brand into the world's most popular cruise line," Josh Weinstein, the chief executive officer of Carnival Corporation & plc, said in a statement, adding, “given the strategic reality of the South Pacific's small population and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs, we're adjusting our approach to give us the efficiencies we need to continue delivering an incredible cruise experience year-round to our guests in the region.”

When the merger is complete, Weinstein said Carnival Cruise Line will make up about 35 percent of the company's total global capacity. In addition to the new P&O Cruises Australia ships, Carnival will operate the Carnival Splendor and Carnival Luminosa in the region .

P&O Cruises Australia currently operates three ships. The cruise line’s third ship, the Pacific Explorer , will be phased out of the fleet in February 2025.

Carnival Corporation said current P&O Cruises Australia sailings will operate as normal and guests will be notified of any changes to future bookings.

P&O Cruises, which is a company based in the United Kingdom, is not affected by this merger.

In addition to these cruise lines, Carnival Corporation operates AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises, Cunard, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, and Seabourn.

The decision to grow its presence in the South Pacific comes as Carnival is in the process of updating how it advertises cruise fares . Starting July 1, Carnival will include all government-mandated taxes, fees, and port expenses in the total advertised price thanks to a new California law requiring cruise lines to include those extra expenses in the advertised fare.

Carnival Corp to fold P&O Cruises Australia brand into Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Corp. will fold P&O Cruises Australia into Carnival Cruise Line next year.

• The change does not affect Carnival Corp.’s England-based P&O Cruises, which is a separate brand.

The cruise line operator will retire the P&O Cruises Australia brand in March 2025, the company announced Monday.

"Despite increasing Carnival Cruise Line's capacity by almost 25% since 2019 including transferring three ships from Costa Cruises, guest demand remains incredibly strong so we're leveraging our scale in an even more meaningful way by absorbing an entire brand into the world's most popular cruise line," Carnival Corp. CEO Josh Weinstein said in a news release .

Other Carnival Corp. brands include Holland America Line , Princess Cruises and Seabourn.

Carnival Cruise Line will constitute around 35% of the company’s worldwide capacity when the transition is finished, up from 29% in 2019. P&O’s Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure ships will sail for Carnival following a rebrand, while Pacific Explorer will leave the fleet in February.

"P&O Cruises Australia is a storied brand with an amazing team, and we are extremely proud of everything we have accomplished together in Australia and the broader region," Weinstein continued. "However, given the strategic reality of the South Pacific's small population and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs, we're adjusting our approach to give us the efficiencies we need to continue delivering an incredible cruise experience year-round to our guests in the region.”

A spokesperson for the company told USA TODAY the integration "will unfortunately result in some staffing reductions, and we are notifying employees," though they did not share specific numbers. "We also expect to have most members of the P&O Australia shipboard team redeployed to work for Carnival Cruise Line or our six other cruise lines operating in the region," the spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Following the change, Carnival will have four ships sailing in the market, including Carnival Splendor and Carnival Luminosa. The company said guests will be contacted “in the coming days” about any changes to future cruises because of the consolidation. Current itineraries will sail as scheduled.

"We look forward to building on the history and heritage of P&O Cruises Australia by bringing some of our innovations to more cruise guests in the region," Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy added in the release. "While we plan to make some technology upgrades and other small changes to the two P&O Cruises Australia ships, they will continue to be geared to the unique Australian market with a familiar feel and much of the same experiences for P&O Cruises Australia guests.”

The change does not affect Carnival Corp.’s England-based P&O Cruises, which is a separate brand. The company also recently announced that Carnival Cruise Line will add two new Excel-class ships in 2027 and 2028.
