Nepal, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage, has long been a magnet for travelers seeking more than just sightseeing. Nestled in the lap of the majestic Himalayas, this enchanting country offers a unique brand of tourism - wellness tourism. It's a journey that takes you beyond traditional exploration, focusing on rejuvenation, peace, and embracing a healthier, more fulfilling life. In this guide, we will delve into the world of wellness tourism in Nepal, with a particular emphasis on healing retreats that connect you with nature and promote a balanced, healthy life.

The Call of Wellness Tourism

Wellness tourism is a growing trend, and Nepal has emerged as a prominent destination for those seeking solace and rejuvenation. The allure lies not only in the serene natural beauty but also in the age-old practices of yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda that have been an integral part of Nepali culture. Here, tourists can experience the true essence of wellness by immersing themselves in holistic practices that promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Nepal's Natural Bounty

One of the key draws of wellness tourism in Nepal is its pristine natural surroundings. From the towering Himalayan peaks to lush forests and tranquil lakes, the country's landscapes provide an ideal backdrop for healing and rejuvenation. The fresh mountain air, serene lakeshores, and the soothing sound of rivers create an ambiance of tranquility that is essential for holistic wellness.

Healing Retreats in Nepal

Embracing peace at healing retreats.

Nepal offers a variety of healing retreats that cater to different aspects of well-being. These retreats are designed to provide a peaceful sanctuary where visitors can disconnect from the stresses of modern life and reconnect with themselves. At these retreats, you can explore the power of meditation and mindfulness. Trained instructors guide you through practices that help calm the mind, reduce stress, and promote inner peace. Amidst the serene surroundings, you'll find it easier to let go of the worries that burden you.

Yoga Retreats: Nurturing Mind and Body

Yoga has been practiced in Nepal for centuries and is deeply ingrained in the culture. Yoga retreats in Nepal offer a chance to deepen your practice, whether you're a seasoned yogi or a beginner. These retreats combine yoga sessions, meditation, and Ayurvedic principles to promote a harmonious balance between mind and body.

Ayurvedic Retreats: Ancient Healing Wisdom

Ayurveda, the ancient system of natural healing, is widely practiced in Nepal. Ayurvedic retreats offer personalized wellness programs based on your unique constitution. These programs often include herbal treatments, detoxification, and dietary adjustments to restore balance and vitality.

Exploring Nature: Hiking and Wellness

Nepal's mountainous terrain provides ample opportunities for hiking and trekking. These activities not only allow you to connect with nature but also provide an excellent way to stay physically active. Many wellness retreats incorporate short treks or nature walks into their programs, letting you explore the pristine beauty of Nepal while nurturing your well-being.

Healthy Eating: The Ayurvedic Way

A crucial aspect of wellness tourism in Nepal is its focus on healthy eating. Ayurvedic principles guide the preparation of meals at many retreats, ensuring that your diet supports your overall well-being. Fresh, locally sourced ingredients are often used to create nourishing and delicious meals.

Peace and Nature: A Holistic Approach

Wellness tourism in Nepal goes beyond the physical and delves into the spiritual. The peaceful ambiance, coupled with the spiritual depth of the region, creates a holistic approach to well-being. It's not just about feeling physically healthy but also finding inner peace and balance.

Choosing the Right Healing Retreat

When considering a healing retreat in Nepal, it's essential to choose one that aligns with your wellness goals. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Location: Decide whether you prefer a retreat in the mountains, by a serene lake, or in a lush forest.
  • Duration: Retreats vary in length, so choose one that fits your schedule and allows ample time for relaxation and healing.
  • Activities: Consider the types of activities offered, whether you're interested in yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, or a combination of these practices.
  • Accommodation: Check the accommodation options, from rustic cabins to comfortable lodges, to ensure your comfort during your stay.
  • Instructors: Research the qualifications and experience of the instructors or practitioners leading the retreat.

Wellness tourism in Nepal offers a transformative journey that enriches your body, mind, and spirit. The combination of breathtaking natural beauty, ancient healing practices, and a deep spiritual connection creates an environment where you can truly rejuvenate and embrace a healthier, more balanced life. Whether you seek inner peace through meditation, physical well-being through yoga, or holistic healing through Ayurveda, Nepal's healing retreats provide the ideal setting for your wellness journey. So, answer the call of wellness tourism and embark on a life-enriching adventure in the heart of the Himalayas.

Tourism for the soul

Tourism for the soul

Basu Gautam

Apart from changing how we work, learn and interact, the Covid-19 pandemic has changed how we travel today and in the future. Being grounded during this difficult period reminded us of the importance of travel for our mental health and personal growth. We love travelling because, deep inside, we are adventurous beings. Although some of us crave adventure more than others, the hunger for fresh and exciting experiences, it seems, is ingrained in our DNA. We are meant to seek the unknown and escape to new places as it leaves us with experiences that polish our self-confidence, emotional resilience, social bonding and world view, to say the least. There is something special about embarking on a journey to new places, learning new skills, gaining new experiences and returning to the familiar surroundings that makes us more humane and empathetic towards others.

Soul liberating experience

Whether it is a brief weekend trek to the hillside of Sundarijal near Kathmandu or a mountain bike challenge over rugged mountains in upper Mustang, the venture is a truly soul liberating experience beneficial to us physically, mentally and spiritually. As an avid traveller myself, I have often found myself returning home with a more relaxed mindset and increased self-confidence after every trip, short or long. The experiences gained during the tour and sharing those trials and triumphs with others have helped me understand the human psyche's depth.

The Covid-19 experience has also prompted us to reflect deeply on our quality of life, health and wellness, and most importantly, our spiritual well-being. Our relationship with spirituality has a strong influence on our personal beliefs, attitudes, behaviours, social interactions and emotions. Our spiritual wellness can be instrumental in finding our life’s meaning and purpose, and going deeper into understanding our values, beliefs and morals that guide our actions.

Against the background of a global pandemic that is likely to be one of the worst crises to face our world in generations, spiritual tourism in Nepal has the potential for major growth as the world opts to come out of hibernation. With the expanded vaccination drive globally and a significant decline in Covid-19 cases, the world seems ready to travel again. Like the hippies who travelled from London to Kathmandu seeking Shangrila and mysticism, the world would want to be flocking to Nepal once again to recharge their spiritual batteries in the post-pandemic era. It seems the hippie trail of the 1960s and 1970s is ready for reincarnation as youngsters will be weaving mindfulness and yoga experiences in the Himalaya once the world emerges from the pandemic.

Spiritual retreats and custom-designed off-grid destinations will be a new trend in the post-Covid travel itinerary. Spiritual travel has been explored in Nepal since the 1960s, and we have the opportunity to capitalise on that strength to fulfil soulful experiences that the world aspires for in our natural hinterlands and World Heritage Sites.

Putting aside the devastating decline in tourism due to the pandemic in the last two years, the travel industry in Nepal was witnessing a boom unlike at any other time in the past. The fascinating blend of Hinduism and Buddhism in Nepal, along with our exceptionally beautiful natural landscape, makes us the perfect destination for those seeking inner peace and outer paradise. We are also a deeply spiritual nation and possess destinations like Lumbini, the historic birthplace of the Buddha, one of the most important spiritual figures in the history of humankind.

Buddhism is a religion practised worldwide by an estimated 535 million people representing 8-10 percent of the world population. Because of its spiritual significance, Lumbini holds vast prospects for tourism growth, not just for Buddhists from across the world, but also for other peace-loving people. If Davos of Switzerland, a tiny resort town in the Swiss Alps, has the potential to become home to heads of state, captains of industry and others each year during the World Economic Forum for global interactions, Lumbini, a UNESCO World Heritage Site also can be developed into a platform for notable global gathering to discuss issues ranging from nuclear proliferation to the challenges of climate change. Like Davos, Lumbini needs a well-crafted promotional strategy that emphasises the idea of “Hub for Global Dialogue and Cooperation” and not just a pilgrimage site.

Inner peace tourism

More than any other sector of the world economy, tourism felt the most distressing pinch due to the pandemic crisis worldwide. The global economic turmoil resulting from the Covid-19 situation has put extra pressure on people’s psycho-physical state of health. Although wellness and inner peace tourism is a relatively new trend, we can, with proper planning, build a post-pandemic tourism industry that will see an influx of tourists looking for refuge to relax not just their body and mind, but souls too. Yoga, meditation and spiritual retreat tourism are what the tourists in the post-pandemic era will be increasingly seeking to rejuvenate themselves.

Yoga and meditation helped the world alleviate mental stress and improve psychological well-being during the peak of the pandemic. Against this background, we can provide the services of spiritual well-being and natural retreats as the world slowly heals after the pandemic. The world is ready for spiritual travel following the pain of the pandemic, but the question is whether we are ready to offer that soulful detox to the world. Spiritual tourism is the next big thing, and there is no other ideal destination than Nepal in the world.

What people love about health, spa & wellness tours in nepal.

A real dream! Beautiful weather, nice people in the group, Amazing Guide really kind, friendly and professional, I keep a really good memory of my Yoga trek in Langtang Valley with Himalayan Recreation. Best experience ever! If really enjoyed my trip in Himalayan Mountain with this company. I recommend it!
We had a very good time during our 10 days Ghorepani Poon Hill Yoga Trek. Everybody was extremely friendly and they made us feel welcome. Unfortunately, at the beginning of our trip, one of the girls from our group had some health problems, and Deepak was very helpful in taking us to a hospital that provided all the needed medicine and adequate intervention. Since we had to delay our trek for one day, we were able to include an extra day trip to Bhaktapur (for which we paid extra) and it was beautiful. The guide that joined us in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur was very nice and very well prepared, providing us with many interesting information. The best part of the trip was the 5 days trek to Ghorepani - Poon Hill. This was mainly due to our incredible guide, Anil. He is very smart and well prepared and he explained to us the local culture, religion, beliefs, habits. The yoga classes held outdoor were absolutely amazing and were totally worth waking up at 5.30 am. The two porters that helped us with the luggage were life saviors and they made it so that we can enjoy our trek without any extra carry. The accommodation during the hike was very nice. Although we had sleeping bags, the extra blankets received there were an absolute must. All accommodations provided warm water and electricity (some of them for an extra charge), and internet (for 100-200 rupees). The food was very good, but the coffee was very bad (if you are a coffee lover, prepare to suffer from this point of view). As low points, I would indicate the accommodation in Kathmandu. The rooms were not clean and the bathrooms were quite bad. The toiled was overflowing and the showers were in a terrible condition and could not be used. Another low point was the transportation from Kathmandu to Pokhara. We were informed that it would be done by DeLuxe bus, so the expectations were set accordingly. However, what we received was a 9h ride in a bus without air conditioning, with very little space for our feet, and with very uncomfortable seats. It was a very unpleasant trip so for the way back we decided to pay extra and get a VIP bus, which was a lot better. Another low point would be the fact that during the trip, there was a predetermined budget for our daily meals that included only one dish and one drink, and if we wanted something extra, like a second drink, or a second dish (that would make sense, after a 7h trek) we needed to pay extra. Considering the amount we paid for the entire trip, and the fact that it indicated that meals were included, it took us by surprise. I would recommend to discuss every single detail from the start, so that no surprises appear on the way. All in all, it was a great experience, again, mostly due to our amazing guide, Anil, and to our porter friends.
The tour was really well organized. Dipak, the manager of Trekking planner, takes care of every little details. The guide and porters were highly competent, the yoga classes were adapted to guests level. The hotels and lodges were all of good standards. They make sure guests feel welcome and leave happy. Trekking planner is a serious, friendly and flexible agency who can adapt to anyone's wish. I would recommend this agency to everyone visiting Nepal.

You can expect a meditation retreat in Nepal to be infused with the local culture and traditions. Buddhism was founded in Nepal, and as such, you can expect to find many retreats to have a Buddhist offering.

There are three types of Buddhism in Nepal, Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana, and each of these has its own traditions, practices, and history.

Most retreats offer other practices outside of meditation. Some offer one on one sessions with a counselor or psychotherapist, some offer group yoga practices, and some offer outdoor activities such as hiking to allow you to connect with nature.

Choosing a meditation retreat in Nepal is difficult because of the overwhelming number of options. The decision isn’t something that you should take lightly either. You need to think about your goals and what you want to get out of them, and then choose a retreat that will support these goals.

Ilam Nepal

Decide what you want to achieve and how you want to feel after the retreat. Once you’ve gone through this process, you need to look at the more practical factors to help narrow down your choices.

These factors will include the duration of the retreat, your budget, the location, and what kinds of extras you’re hoping to gain from the retreat.

Let’s take a closer look at these factors and what to consider when making your choice.

Nepal is a fairly large country, and you’ll find retreats in a lot of different areas. Choosing the location is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing your retreat. If you’re going on retreat as part of a larger holiday in Nepal, then try to choose a sanctuary that fits with your travel itinerary.

If you’re looking for a retreat for the purpose of inner healing, then look at retreats in specific areas, such as close to the Himalayas, or in one of the national parks .

Many people travel to Kathmandu as it’s the gateway to the Himalayas, but retreats tend to be a few hours drive outside the city. Another great area to look at is Pokhara, which is famous for being the start of the Annapurna Circuit.

If you want to have a truly rural retreat, head to the village of Nagarjun or Lumbini. If you want a more traditional vibe, then try looking for a retreat in the ancient city of Kirtipur.

You can get a truly authentic experience when you go on a meditation retreat in Nepal. Some retreats offer a truly authentic Buddhist experience, giving you the chance to stay in a working monastery and learn from and among monks.

You’ll also find that many yoga retreats in Nepal , which is another form of meditation focused on movement and breath work. Yoga classes tend to be for every level and you’ll find a wide range of yoga disciplines from Hatha Yoga, to Ashtanga or Iyengar Yoga .

Another common practice at Nepalese retreats is sound healing, which uses sound and music to enhance health and wellbeing. If you’re interested in this practice, then Nepal is the ideal place to try it out.

Man in the mountain Nepal

Meditation sanctuaries in Nepal range from very cheap to very expensive. Location and amenities tend to be the primary reasons for the price difference.

If you don’t mind basic accommodations with few amenities, then you can find a really affordable retreat. The more expensive retreats are the ones that offer luxuries, such as outdoor pools, private rooms, three-course meals, and your entire day planned out.

Another factor that influences the price is the classes on offer. The cheaper options tend to offer one meditation session a day and lots of free time for you to do as you please. But the more expensive options offer a wide range of practices, classes, and workshops that fill your day with activities for inner healing.

You’ll find most retreats offer daily meditation practices, sometimes more than once a day. But you should also consider what other perks the retreat offers. What other practices and activities does it offer to fill up your day?

Some retreats offer hiking as part of the package since Nepal is one of the best places in the world for hiking . You might also find retreats that have individual sessions, where you can receive personalized and tailored practices designed for you. Others just give you free time to explore all the popular places to visit nearby.

Some retreats also take their practices outside, with a backdrop of the Himalayas. These small little extras can have a big impact on your experience.

One of the biggest perks of going on meditation retreats in Nepal is the Ayurveda . Quite a few of the meditation sanctuaries offer Ayurvedic practices in their offering as a way to enhance your health and growth during your stay.

Ayurveda is a form of medicine that originated in India more than 3,000 years ago. It’s all about healing your body and soul with food and herbs.

You can stay at a Nepalese retreat for anywhere from 4 to 29 days. Most of the retreats are held based on a specific length of time and it’s not flexible when you can leave. This means you do need to figure out how much time you have to offer for a retreat before you book.

It’s also not true that you can’t benefit from a short retreat. You can get a lot of emotional work done in a few days. But if you really want to dig deeper, a longer retreat offers a more in-depth program and gives you much more practice.

Once you’ve thought about your goals, preferences, and practical factors, it’s time to make your decision. To help make that a little easier, here are some of my favorite retreats in Nepal…

Top destinations for ‘Sober Travel’

Vacations are a time to unwind, explore new destinations, and spend time with loved ones. For many, this includes kicking back with an alcoholic beverage. However, for a growing number of travelers, alcohol-free vacations are becoming increasingly popular.  In fact, one survey with 20,000 respondents found that 40 percent were likely to take a detox trip in 2024.

Another study has found younger people, in particular, are drinking less than previous generations. So, with more people opting to cut back on drinking during their vacation, or skip it altogether – which are the best destinations for travelers looking to avoid a booze?

To find out which city offers the best opportunity for a sober vacation, InsureMyTrip looked at eight different ranking factors. These include the cost of a domestic beer, average annual alcohol consumption per person, the number of national parks and world heritage sites, and the average cost of a wellness retreat.

The latest available data for each city is standardized in each category. The data is standardized using min-max normalization and values were multiplied by 10 to create a score from 0 to 10.

The study reveals that Asian destinations are the best for a sober vacation, with six countries from the continent featuring in the top 10. One report found that there is a growing number of ‘sober curious’ people in Asia Pacific, with more people opting for non-alcoholic beverages.

In first position is Nepal, with an overall score of 7.02.  Nepal, the home of Mount Everest, is not just a perfect destination for adventurers looking to climb the world’s highest summit. For those looking to unwind and relax, Nepal has highly rated national parks (4.62/5) and spas (4.45/5). Wellness retreats are also among the most affordable in the study, costing an average $584.

Tourism numbers in Nepal have been steadily increasing following the pandemic, with the country welcoming more than one million tourists in 2023. However, Nepal is still a hidden gem, with neighboring countries receiving millions more tourists yearly. For those looking to avoid the hustle and bustle of more popular tourist destinations, Nepal offers a perfect retreat.

wellness tourism in nepal

Nepal also scores highly for low alcohol consumption. With an average alcohol consumption of just 1.36 liters per person per year, drinking alcohol is not as prevalent as in other countries in the study.  For an alternative drinking experience, tea tours are an ideal option. Farmers in Nepal grow a range of high-quality teas and tea tourism is growing in popularity. These experiences offer tourists a unique opportunity to stay on farms and make tea themselves.

Morocco, in North Africa, closely follows Nepal, with an overall score of 7. Morocco is ranked highly due to the average cost of its wellness retreats ($808), which is less than half the average cost of a wellness retreat in the study ($1,790).

Morocco is known for its rich culture and history and there is an abundance of markets, beaches, museums, and monuments to explore. For those looking to spend their time being pampered, spas in the country are well-rated (4.43/5).

Alcohol consumption in the country is also very low, with tourists limited to drinking in specific areas, making it ideal for those opting for an alcohol-free trip. The average alcohol consumption per person per year in Morocco is just 0.49 liters.

In third position is the Central American nation of Costa Rica, with an overall score of 6.73. It received the highest score in the study for its national parks (4.74/5). This destination is known for its lush forests, volcanos, and waterfalls – perfect for reconnecting with nature. Spas on the in Costa Rica are also rated highly (4.63/5).

The average alcohol consumption per person per year is 3.45 liters. While this is slightly higher than the average alcohol consumption in Nepal and Morocco, it is still much lower than the study average (7.09 liters).

Retreats in Costa Rica cost an average of $1807, which is slightly higher than the study average ($1,790). This expense contributes to Costa Rica’s slightly lower ranking.

In fourth and fifth position are Turkey and Greece with overall scores of 6.57 and 6.41 respectively. Turkey is highly rated for its low alcohol consumption (1.82 liters per person per year on average). Turkey also has the second-highest number of eco-certified spas in the top 10 (185). The average cost of a wellness retreat is $2,898, which is by far the most expensive in the top five. This expense contributes to Turkey’s slightly lower score.

Greece has the best-rated spas in the top five (4.71/5) and the highest number of eco-certified spas (300), making it an ideal destination for a relaxing trip. However, the high average alcohol consumption per person per year (7.12 liters) contributed to its lower ranking in the study.

In overall categories for best things to do and best for relaxation, Greece comes out top while Jordan, in seventh position, received the best overall score for low alcohol consumption.

Sara Boisvert, Director of Marketing at InsureMyTrip commented on the findings:    With the increased popularity of wellness vacations – it’s only natural these travelers would be looking to cut down or eliminate alcohol consumption on these trips. Our goal for this study was to make it easy for sober travelers to find the vacation destination of their dreams.

Two men drown in Glacier National Park, including an Indian tourist

A tragic incident occurred at Glacier National Park, resulting in the drowning deaths of two men, according to park authorities.

On Saturday morning, a 26-year-old man from India, who was living and working in California, was hiking on Avalanche Lake Trail when he slipped on rocks near Avalanche Creek.

Witnesses saw him go underwater and briefly resurface before being swept away through a narrow gorge at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Despite an aerial search by a helicopter crew and efforts by more than 10 park rangers, his body is believed to be trapped underwater in the gorge, according to reports by AP ( Associated Press ).

High water levels due to snowmelt runoff and poor visibility have forced officials to scale back the search, though rangers continue to monitor the area.

Later that day, in a separate incident, a 28-year-old man from Nepal, who was living and working in Portland, Oregon, drowned while swimming in Lake McDonald near Sprague Creek Campground.

His friends reported that he was an inexperienced swimmer.

He began to struggle about 30 yards from shore and went underwater around 6:25 p.m. The Flathead County Sheriff’s dive team recovered his body from 35 to 40 feet of water at approximately 8:20 p.m., according to various reports.

Park officials have contacted the consulates of India and Nepal to assist in notifying the victims' families.

The names of the deceased have not been released by the authorities. Drowning remains the leading cause of death in Glacier National Park, officials said.
