Tamia is a singer and songwriter hailing from Windsor, Ontario, Canada who was born on the May 9th 1975. Since her debut in 1995 she has released five albums, and is known for being one of the most eclectic and interesting R&B singers of recent times.
Canada might not be a renowned hotbed of soul singing sensations, but Tamia Marilyn Hill could quite easily be the exception to that. Having grown up in Windsor, Ontario, she was raised a stone’s throw from the Detroit border, and living so near a place that actually is a renowned hotbed of soul singing sensations, it rubbed off on her. Her early musical influences came from the songs she heard in church and the music that her mother played her from an early age and by six, she was in her church’s choir. By the age of 12 she had already been involved in several local musical productions, and recognising the talent and drive she had to be as good as she could be, her family set her up with voice and piano lessons from fellow Windsor, Ontario native Eugene Davis.
When she was 18 years old she won the Canadian TV station YTV’s Vocal Achievement. This was a national competition that led to her securing a record contract with Qwest Records, so she began recording her debut album in 1995, when she was 20 years old. Her first couple of singles were hits on the R&B Charts but it wasn’t until 1996 that she saw her first major success. Her single “Missing You”, which she recorded in collaboration with Brandy, Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan hurtles into the top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100, cementing her status as one of the most exciting singers of her generation. This success continued into the new millennium, where her single “Stranger In My House” hurtled into the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 in 2001.
Since then, Tamia has had an abundance of success in both the albums and singles charts. Her self-titled debut, her second effort “A Nu Day”, and 2004’s “More” were all certified Gold within the year of their release. She featured on a top five hit on the Hot 100 with Fabolos’ single “Into You”, and has had countless hits on the R&B Charts. All of this comes with far more critical acclaim than one might expect from your average R&B star. She’s still releasing albums and touring to this day, even after beating Multiple Sclerosis in 2003, and with a new album coming out soon on Def Jam, Tami comes highly recommended.
Live reviews
Tamia is and will be one of the best singers of our time. Her timeless music will live on as the years pass by. Her wise words will live on through our children. She will continue to inspire us all and we will just get lost in time waiting for another Tamia album. She has proven to us over and over again that no matter who she works with in the studio, she is the one with the magic. Since her first appearance, she put a move on our hearts! Her concert brought tears of joy to the entire audience in San Francisco. We are all infected with the Tamia virus and now she is very aware of it! We love you Tamia!!! Her concert was #FLAWLESS!

Excellent show. The band, sound quality, vocal performance, she performed all the great songs we love from tamia. If she ever returns to London again I would definitely go.
The energy was good, even if you are not a tamia fan, you can still enjoy the music as her singing is so good. Tickets were recently priced. The venue is just what I look for, spacious but still has that intimate vibe.
I loved it she was fire ended the tour at the best place in the best way she sung her best songs her vocals were life and if given another chance I would go see her again. The seats were great for the price and you had a good view tyrese on the other hand came out last and catered more to the needs of the older fans while Tamia just set the pace and got us on her level.
Tamia was great - her look, her voice, and band was AMAZING! She is such a great entertainer and one of those that is underrated. I have always enjoyed shows at the Filmore and the venue did not disappoint. I hope Tamia comes back again and the surprise of seeing Grant Hill was another nice added element to the show. What an amazing night! Can't wait for the next one!
Was very disappointed the concert was canceled and I was not notified until I got there the place was empty no one in the parking lot and I saw a guy that worked at the venue where the concert was and he told me it was canceled until July 6 so needless to say I was very upset because it was my birthday weekend and was not notified that the concert was canceled.
This was a great concert! The Fillmore was packed and Tamia came out at 9pm and performed for 1 hour and 30 minutes....she still got it! So happy for her....a very passionate artist! I wish her much success.
Awesome awesome show! Tamia did an outstanding job. Her vocals gave me goosebumps. She touched on all her hits and sounded better that the record. I will attend every show Tamia has in Dallas in the future.
Excellent. She can “sang”. She gave a good show with range and light choreography. Looovvve her. This was my first Songkick notification. Grateful xoxo
Why does my review have to be 30 words?
Tamia was absolutely wonderful. Very energetic, personable with the voice of a true diva! She sung all my favorite songs & her background singers were awesome too. Fan for life.
The concert was awesome and we even able to upgrade our tickets to meet and greet as we were in line for the concert. After 20 yr, Tamia can still jam and rock out.

Tamia in three-city tour of South Africa
M ulti-Grammy-nominated artist Tamia is to perform in a three-city tour in April 2014, namely: Grand Arena, GrandWest, Cape Town on Saturday, 26 April; Big Top Arena, Carnival City, Joburg on Sunday, 27 April; and the Boardwalk Convention Centre, Port Elizabeth on 30 April.
Soul singer and six-time Grammy-nominated performer Tamia Hill began honing her voice when she was still a child growing-up in Canada. Living near the boogie down city of Detroit, the then-budding talent was exposed to that city's rich musical history through its deep gospel tradition and booming Motown sound.
"I feel a connection to all types of music," Tamia said from her home in Florida. "From soul to country to gospel, as long as the song has a good story, I'm hooked." Citing Phyllis Hyman and Chaka Khan as influences, Tamia strives to bring freshness to the soul arena.
From her debut single You Put A Move On My Heart, produced by Quincy Jones in 1994, to her more recent song cycle, Tamia possesses both a hypnotic charm and timeless voice.
Fifth studio album released
Tamia has collaborated with a diverse roster of artists, including Babyface, Barry White, Missy Elliott, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Gladys Knight, Eric Benet and Gerald Levert. In 2003, she recorded the number four Billboard Hot 100 Chart hit Into You with rapper Fabolous.
With the release of her fifth studio album, "Beautiful Surprise", the singer aurally explores various genres of music, blending her special passion with each style and making them her own. Having recruited two-time Grammy-nominated songwriter/producer Claude Kelly (Bruno Mars' Grenade and Kelly Clarkson's My Life Would Suck Without You) as her co-executive producer on "Beautiful Surprise", the two worked hard to create a project that is as diverse as it is soulful.
Tamia will travel to South Africa with her band and perform hits from all her albums.
